Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:26.69\00:00:28.62 This is the program bringing you liberty 00:00:28.66\00:00:32.23 in its purest sense and explanation of it 00:00:32.26\00:00:34.76 as well as a commentary on what's happening now. 00:00:34.80\00:00:37.47 My name is Lincoln Steed, Editor of Liberty Magazine, 00:00:37.50\00:00:41.10 and my guest on this program is Kingsley Palmer. 00:00:41.14\00:00:44.47 I know your name very well like that... 00:00:44.51\00:00:46.21 As you know I have prompting problems... 00:00:46.24\00:00:48.61 You're doing well. You're doing well. 00:00:48.64\00:00:49.98 But you and I've been really comparing notes 00:00:50.01\00:00:51.88 on not just this program, 00:00:51.91\00:00:53.58 few others that we've done at other times. 00:00:53.62\00:00:55.78 And on this program, I want to really get 00:00:55.82\00:00:58.89 to the nitty-gritty, religious liberty. 00:00:58.92\00:01:01.86 We talk about the symptoms usually in the negative, 00:01:01.89\00:01:04.83 something's gone wrong here, something's gone wrong there. 00:01:04.86\00:01:07.43 What is the basis for you 00:01:07.46\00:01:11.13 and for what we should all be doing 00:01:11.17\00:01:12.63 on religious liberty? 00:01:12.67\00:01:14.30 Where do you get your marching orders? 00:01:14.34\00:01:16.57 I get the marching orders from scripture. 00:01:16.60\00:01:19.74 And you know, I go back to Micah 6:8, 00:01:19.77\00:01:24.05 Isaiah 61:1, you know, 00:01:24.08\00:01:27.38 where the Lord makes it very plain 00:01:27.42\00:01:29.98 what the objective in reaching human beings 00:01:30.02\00:01:33.76 with the gospel looks like 00:01:33.79\00:01:37.26 in terms of hands, and feet, and engagement. 00:01:37.29\00:01:41.66 We don't offer a service, it's a ministry. 00:01:41.70\00:01:45.10 Now there is a service... 00:01:45.13\00:01:46.63 There is a service component to it, yes. 00:01:46.67\00:01:48.50 Defending mostly Adventist, 00:01:48.54\00:01:50.44 but really anybody that comes to you, 00:01:50.47\00:01:52.07 I think you would... Exactly. 00:01:52.11\00:01:53.88 If it was a religious accommodation issue 00:01:53.91\00:01:56.34 or something like that, 00:01:56.38\00:01:57.98 you would get a bat for them, wouldn't you? 00:01:58.01\00:01:59.41 Because... Well, of course. 00:01:59.45\00:02:00.78 It's not limited to any people, group, or organization, 00:02:00.82\00:02:04.85 or church, or whatever. 00:02:04.89\00:02:06.22 But I also... 00:02:06.25\00:02:07.59 We're defending conscience at root, aren't we? 00:02:07.62\00:02:08.96 Exactly. You're defending conscience. 00:02:08.99\00:02:11.56 A person cannot be in the context 00:02:11.59\00:02:13.60 that we work free religiously 00:02:13.63\00:02:17.17 to know the God that you want to introduce to them. 00:02:17.20\00:02:19.53 If they're incumbent, 00:02:19.57\00:02:20.90 if they don't eat, there's no food to eat, 00:02:20.94\00:02:22.97 if there's no one to stand up 00:02:23.00\00:02:24.91 and advocate for their basic human rights. 00:02:24.94\00:02:27.51 I look at the Ten Commandments in two ways. 00:02:27.54\00:02:30.45 Our relationship to God, 00:02:30.48\00:02:32.11 what He requires of us to make Him known, 00:02:32.15\00:02:35.38 and the application of that. 00:02:35.42\00:02:37.95 The first part of that is the first four commandments, 00:02:37.99\00:02:41.26 and the last six is our relationship 00:02:41.29\00:02:43.49 to other human beings in terms of the gospel 00:02:43.53\00:02:48.26 and our special message being applied. 00:02:48.30\00:02:50.40 Didn't Jesus repeat 00:02:50.43\00:02:51.93 what was in ancient Jewish summation? 00:02:51.97\00:02:54.30 Anyway, you know, love the Lord your God 00:02:54.34\00:02:56.71 with all your heart, with all your soul. 00:02:56.74\00:02:58.31 Right. 00:02:58.34\00:02:59.67 And so that wraps that up, 00:02:59.71\00:03:01.38 and if we know 00:03:01.41\00:03:02.74 that God loves us and created us, 00:03:02.78\00:03:04.28 we want to apply all of that to our fellows. 00:03:04.31\00:03:07.12 We have to, not want to. 00:03:07.15\00:03:08.48 Right. 00:03:08.52\00:03:09.85 You can't even claim to be an active child of God 00:03:09.88\00:03:14.16 or a responsive child of God unless you're doing that. 00:03:14.19\00:03:16.26 So religious liberty on one level 00:03:16.29\00:03:17.93 is putting that into action. 00:03:17.96\00:03:19.29 Right, it is. 00:03:19.33\00:03:20.66 Acknowledging their value and freeing their potential up. 00:03:20.70\00:03:25.53 And I believe that, why I call it ministry. 00:03:25.57\00:03:28.87 And again, 00:03:28.90\00:03:30.24 I'm coming from the perspective of a pastor. 00:03:30.27\00:03:33.68 And some are working within the church... 00:03:33.71\00:03:36.75 I work within the church, it is a ministry. 00:03:36.78\00:03:40.02 When I'm working in the community, 00:03:40.05\00:03:41.78 for example, I got a call the other day, 00:03:41.82\00:03:46.45 the attorney general for the state of Arizona 00:03:46.49\00:03:49.42 asked the religious leaders to come together 00:03:49.46\00:03:51.76 to deal with the opioid situation. 00:03:51.79\00:03:56.56 And we all came together, put our heads together 00:03:56.60\00:03:58.33 as to how can we get the church engaged in something 00:03:58.37\00:04:02.34 where we have a locked-in audience, 00:04:02.37\00:04:04.34 we have a locked-in group of people every weekend, 00:04:04.37\00:04:06.71 who are extension to this society 00:04:06.74\00:04:08.74 of the communities 00:04:08.78\00:04:10.11 that we reside in and we pastor in. 00:04:10.15\00:04:12.81 Where can we build these partnerships 00:04:12.85\00:04:15.05 to be able to attack something like that for information? 00:04:15.08\00:04:18.99 Now when we're able to do that, 00:04:19.02\00:04:21.32 we then opened the door for other opportunities 00:04:21.36\00:04:24.39 for the gospel to be preached. 00:04:24.43\00:04:26.26 Yes. 00:04:26.29\00:04:27.63 So on the one hand, yes, I am an employee 00:04:27.66\00:04:30.33 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:04:30.37\00:04:32.17 But as a pastor and a community leader, 00:04:32.20\00:04:35.14 I have to bring the two together 00:04:35.17\00:04:36.67 in terms of what I do in my local community, 00:04:36.71\00:04:39.74 how do I raise the profile of my church, 00:04:39.77\00:04:42.11 how do I get people out of the pews 00:04:42.14\00:04:44.51 to engage and build relationships. 00:04:44.55\00:04:48.12 What was the government's suggestions 00:04:48.15\00:04:49.92 and what the churches could do? 00:04:49.95\00:04:52.82 Well, one of the... 00:04:52.85\00:04:54.19 In the situation that I'm explaining, 00:04:54.22\00:04:56.39 you have people there, we will... 00:04:56.42\00:04:58.13 Let's come together. 00:04:58.16\00:04:59.63 We've developed a program 00:04:59.66\00:05:01.56 with the law enforcement, all the other health agencies, 00:05:01.60\00:05:04.87 and be educated on how you can recognize that, 00:05:04.90\00:05:08.30 right? 00:05:08.34\00:05:09.67 And how you can set your church up 00:05:09.70\00:05:11.97 as a place where... 00:05:12.01\00:05:13.91 Once you recognize that, 00:05:13.94\00:05:15.28 there are some things you can do in an emergency, 00:05:15.31\00:05:16.95 that's just one of many of the... 00:05:16.98\00:05:18.68 Now there's no question, 00:05:18.71\00:05:20.05 especially on the public affairs 00:05:20.08\00:05:21.42 split of our title. 00:05:21.45\00:05:24.79 You can work cooperatively with authorities 00:05:24.82\00:05:28.12 on, for one of the better term, issues of morality. 00:05:28.16\00:05:33.90 There is another side of it 00:05:33.93\00:05:35.33 that we've got to be careful of. 00:05:35.36\00:05:36.77 And I remember, after... 00:05:36.80\00:05:39.70 Which dome was it? 00:05:39.73\00:05:41.07 There's been a slew of them down 00:05:41.10\00:05:42.87 in the Gulf and down South lately, 00:05:42.90\00:05:45.61 but one of the emergency issue a few years ago, 00:05:45.64\00:05:50.01 there was a directive sent out to all the churches down South 00:05:50.05\00:05:55.35 that the pastor should keep an eye out, 00:05:55.38\00:05:57.49 they should pass on the instructions 00:05:57.52\00:05:59.05 for emergency operation, 00:05:59.09\00:06:01.59 and they should pass on to the authorities 00:06:01.62\00:06:04.13 those who were rejecting this advice. 00:06:04.16\00:06:07.96 So to me, that was shades 00:06:08.00\00:06:09.80 of the Soviet Union operation wave... 00:06:09.83\00:06:14.57 And in China today, 00:06:14.60\00:06:16.60 with the state will if you give them half a chance, 00:06:16.64\00:06:19.37 use the church as their eyes and ears 00:06:19.41\00:06:21.28 for general population control. 00:06:21.31\00:06:26.15 And separation of church and state, 00:06:26.18\00:06:27.92 as you well know, 00:06:27.95\00:06:29.28 doesn't mean that the church never deals with the state. 00:06:29.32\00:06:31.95 We have to, we live within the boundaries of it, 00:06:31.99\00:06:35.26 not to be its tool. 00:06:35.29\00:06:36.62 The state can use the church 00:06:36.66\00:06:37.99 and the church will use the church 00:06:38.03\00:06:39.36 in bad ways if you let it happen. 00:06:39.39\00:06:41.10 Right, and you have to be very smart 00:06:41.13\00:06:43.93 unless you are out there 00:06:43.97\00:06:45.30 understanding what the dynamics are. 00:06:45.33\00:06:46.67 There are some things 00:06:46.70\00:06:48.17 that are of benefit to the local community that... 00:06:48.20\00:06:52.27 Of course, you got to be test all the space, 00:06:52.31\00:06:53.98 you got to know what you are doing, 00:06:54.01\00:06:56.14 but you just can't go out blindly and say, 00:06:56.18\00:06:58.55 "Well, this is a good program, that isn't." 00:06:58.58\00:07:00.95 You got to be able to check out what the... 00:07:00.98\00:07:04.15 I do think the church has an obligation 00:07:04.19\00:07:06.32 even to be the conscience of society 00:07:06.35\00:07:09.52 and speak truth to power which is part of it. 00:07:09.56\00:07:12.46 Well, I'm glad, 'cause this is advocacy. 00:07:12.49\00:07:14.50 Yeah. When I go to... 00:07:14.53\00:07:16.46 When I write a letter for this type of accommodation, 00:07:16.50\00:07:20.07 I'm speaking to an authority, I'm speaking to power. 00:07:20.10\00:07:25.14 When I go to legislature with an issue 00:07:25.17\00:07:28.38 that affects everybody in my community, 00:07:28.41\00:07:30.58 I'm speaking to power. 00:07:30.61\00:07:32.21 I understand that. 00:07:32.25\00:07:33.58 We have Daniel, we have Esther, we have all these examples 00:07:33.62\00:07:37.62 right down to the New Testament. 00:07:37.65\00:07:39.42 Even Jesus did that Himself because He... 00:07:39.45\00:07:43.43 It's an absolute requirement, it's not an optional extra. 00:07:43.46\00:07:50.17 Is it James 4:17 says, 00:07:50.20\00:07:52.77 "Him that knows to do good and does it not, 00:07:52.80\00:07:55.94 in any area or aspect 00:07:55.97\00:07:58.24 where human life and human conscience 00:07:58.27\00:08:01.74 is contravened, and we do nothing 00:08:01.78\00:08:05.65 to them, that is evil." 00:08:05.68\00:08:07.72 And this is part and parcel... 00:08:07.75\00:08:09.15 Well, Ellen White writing to Adventists says, 00:08:09.18\00:08:11.19 we're not to sit calmly 00:08:11.22\00:08:13.46 in expectation of the coming crisis 00:08:13.49\00:08:15.39 thinking that God will shelter us, 00:08:15.42\00:08:16.76 we've got to be proactive... 00:08:16.79\00:08:18.13 Exactly. 00:08:18.16\00:08:19.49 In applying what we know on morality, end-time events, 00:08:19.53\00:08:22.50 the whole thing, on freedom issues. 00:08:22.53\00:08:24.93 And I think it was admirable in the United States 00:08:24.97\00:08:27.70 that Martin Luther King and many other ministers, 00:08:27.74\00:08:32.51 you know, led out boldly in proclaiming, 00:08:32.54\00:08:36.34 you know, God-given liberty 00:08:36.38\00:08:37.71 that turned into a civil liberty. 00:08:37.75\00:08:40.82 So yes, they were treading on political ground 00:08:40.85\00:08:43.49 but they were doing it from the point of... 00:08:43.52\00:08:45.79 It had a biblical foundation too. 00:08:45.82\00:08:47.46 Yes. 00:08:47.49\00:08:48.82 They weren't, you know, 00:08:48.86\00:08:50.63 setting up, sending not at any cooperation 00:08:50.66\00:08:53.16 with power or adding to civil power. 00:08:53.19\00:08:55.80 In fact, they agitated if anything. 00:08:55.83\00:08:58.23 So, you know, I'm comfortable with that. 00:08:58.27\00:08:59.67 Even though at the time, it was very contentious. 00:08:59.70\00:09:03.04 Well, let's remember too. 00:09:03.07\00:09:05.44 In the 1860s, with the civil war, the church, 00:09:05.47\00:09:10.81 the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:09:10.85\00:09:12.18 with its prophetic message was very disturbed 00:09:12.21\00:09:15.42 about the slavery issue. 00:09:15.45\00:09:17.39 Now we all know it's documented, 00:09:17.42\00:09:19.55 the history of our pioneers, 00:09:19.59\00:09:21.29 Ellen White, and the suffrage, and the anti-slavery, 00:09:21.32\00:09:25.23 the setting up of Oakwood University 00:09:25.26\00:09:27.40 at a time when people of color like myself 00:09:27.43\00:09:30.70 were not allowed to be taught. 00:09:30.73\00:09:32.40 We're taught... 00:09:32.43\00:09:33.77 We were supposed to remain ignorant and untaught, 00:09:33.80\00:09:37.01 our church stepped up, 00:09:37.04\00:09:39.47 and yet it didn't diminish the power or the witness 00:09:39.51\00:09:42.44 of the prophetic message that we had. 00:09:42.48\00:09:45.35 And I really do believe this. 00:09:45.38\00:09:46.88 And sometimes when I move around 00:09:46.92\00:09:48.28 from churches to churches, people get their backs up. 00:09:48.32\00:09:51.59 "Oh, you're being too political." 00:09:51.62\00:09:54.16 The Bible is full of political inferences. 00:09:54.19\00:09:56.16 The way I put it. 00:09:56.19\00:09:57.53 You know, then, and people use that as an excuse. 00:09:57.56\00:09:58.89 And maybe I can easily help clarify 00:09:58.93\00:10:00.26 because I listen to a lot of political talk... 00:10:00.30\00:10:01.63 Go ahead. Yeah. 00:10:01.66\00:10:03.00 And many, many times, 00:10:03.03\00:10:04.37 I've heard senators and congressman 00:10:04.40\00:10:06.13 being interviewed on some, 00:10:06.17\00:10:07.60 the issue of the day and they say, 00:10:07.64\00:10:09.50 "I don't want to be political on this." 00:10:09.54\00:10:11.74 And I think there's a tautology of era, 00:10:11.77\00:10:14.54 they are a political instrument. 00:10:14.58\00:10:16.68 What they really mean 00:10:16.71\00:10:18.15 is, "I don't want to be partisan on this." 00:10:18.18\00:10:21.65 And that's what we're called to be non-partisan. 00:10:21.68\00:10:24.92 Yeah. 00:10:24.95\00:10:26.29 But in religious liberty, 00:10:26.32\00:10:27.66 how can you avoid not being political? 00:10:27.69\00:10:29.82 You can't. 00:10:29.86\00:10:31.19 You're absolutely dealing with a phase of public policy, 00:10:31.23\00:10:37.53 and you're dealing with public officials. 00:10:37.57\00:10:39.63 The whole thing is political but not in the bad sense 00:10:39.67\00:10:43.34 because what we are warned against is partisan. 00:10:43.37\00:10:46.07 Now writing to Seventh-day Adventists only, 00:10:46.11\00:10:50.31 Ellen White, our early pioneer, spoke on this 00:10:50.35\00:10:54.08 at least two occasions I know of, 00:10:54.12\00:10:55.45 and she said, "Any pastor or teacher 00:10:55.48\00:10:59.22 who's involved with partisan, party, politics 00:10:59.25\00:11:02.72 should resign or be fired." 00:11:02.76\00:11:04.89 You know what? 00:11:04.93\00:11:06.26 And I agree with that. I too do. 00:11:06.29\00:11:07.83 But that's partisan issues. That's partisan. 00:11:07.86\00:11:09.50 In other words, you can't be a party animal 00:11:09.53\00:11:11.03 pushing for republic and democrat 00:11:11.07\00:11:13.23 or even an independent party. 00:11:13.27\00:11:15.27 That's a political activity 00:11:15.30\00:11:16.67 that should have no place in the church 00:11:16.71\00:11:19.74 because it's to deal 00:11:19.77\00:11:21.11 with civil power and a civil agenda, 00:11:21.14\00:11:23.98 but if we're to be like Daniel, or Joseph, or whatever, 00:11:24.01\00:11:27.58 we need to speak not just truth 00:11:27.62\00:11:30.12 but we need to speak absolute truth 00:11:30.15\00:11:32.19 from God's Word straight to that. 00:11:32.22\00:11:34.06 That's a privilege. 00:11:34.09\00:11:35.42 That's our obligation on occasion. 00:11:35.46\00:11:37.39 But also what I've come up against 00:11:37.43\00:11:39.59 is this definition, this misapplication 00:11:39.63\00:11:43.87 of what a prophet should do. 00:11:43.90\00:11:46.70 We're happy with the foretelling, 00:11:46.74\00:11:49.77 but we're not happy with the tell forth. 00:11:49.80\00:11:53.17 And people will tell you, in a heartbeat, 00:11:53.21\00:11:56.18 you know, and we've had pushback 00:11:56.21\00:11:58.81 since we tried to balance 00:11:58.85\00:12:00.45 the service, the ministry as a component 00:12:00.48\00:12:03.72 that's effectively there to help the community 00:12:03.75\00:12:07.39 and to help how church understand. 00:12:07.42\00:12:09.42 Be happy that God has called you 00:12:09.46\00:12:11.66 to be able to touch someone in an area 00:12:11.69\00:12:14.10 that I might not have been able to touch or to reach someone, 00:12:14.13\00:12:17.13 but the whole objective is, 00:12:17.17\00:12:18.50 "Hey, we have a prophetic message." 00:12:18.53\00:12:20.74 We tell, we share that prophetic message 00:12:20.77\00:12:24.04 with the community, 00:12:24.07\00:12:25.47 while at the same time, being neutral 00:12:25.51\00:12:28.94 and not being partisan as you rightly said, 00:12:28.98\00:12:31.91 and speaking to power 00:12:31.95\00:12:33.78 such as we have these biblical examples, 00:12:33.82\00:12:36.18 and that for me is extremely important. 00:12:36.22\00:12:41.36 We are to speak prophetically as Adventists, particularly, 00:12:41.39\00:12:46.46 because our group and our pioneers 00:12:46.49\00:12:49.66 studied the Bible, 00:12:49.70\00:12:51.03 as all Christians and we hope all people 00:12:51.07\00:12:53.50 that have curiosity about spiritual things 00:12:53.54\00:12:55.20 read this Holy Book, 00:12:55.24\00:12:56.64 and this, there's outlines of the future, 00:12:56.67\00:13:00.74 you know, of human behavior, that's prophecy. 00:13:00.78\00:13:03.55 And where you see things told for our aids 00:13:03.58\00:13:07.15 that needs to be explicated to those people. 00:13:07.18\00:13:09.88 And I think that goes to the root, 00:13:09.92\00:13:11.82 that is what it is in the Bible prophecy. 00:13:11.85\00:13:13.86 Yes. 00:13:13.89\00:13:15.22 But the word to be a prophet, we've misunderstood it. 00:13:15.26\00:13:18.19 Exactly. 00:13:18.23\00:13:19.56 It's an explicator of truth. It is. 00:13:19.59\00:13:21.83 Anybody that does that is a prophet... 00:13:21.86\00:13:23.90 Yes. Who speak prophetically. 00:13:23.93\00:13:25.30 And it's a problem to those who... 00:13:25.33\00:13:27.50 And really, what we sometimes think 00:13:27.54\00:13:29.14 as a prophet where someone, 00:13:29.17\00:13:30.51 you know, is a mouthpiece for God, 00:13:30.54\00:13:32.97 which has happened in Bible times, particularly, 00:13:33.01\00:13:35.28 but I wouldn't limit it to that. 00:13:35.31\00:13:36.78 And Joel says 00:13:36.81\00:13:38.15 that this will happen at the end of the time. 00:13:38.18\00:13:39.51 Right. 00:13:39.55\00:13:41.05 That's where you're a mouthpiece of God, 00:13:41.08\00:13:42.52 but normally a prophet is someone 00:13:42.55\00:13:44.52 who's speaking on behalf of God 00:13:44.55\00:13:46.09 and explicating to other people in an understandable way, 00:13:46.12\00:13:50.49 these words once delivered to the saints. 00:13:50.53\00:13:53.83 Exactly. 00:13:53.86\00:13:55.20 And so we can speak prophetically. 00:13:55.23\00:13:58.00 And we can speak prophetically to those elements 00:13:58.03\00:14:02.94 who make the decisions that will impact what we do, 00:14:02.97\00:14:07.21 and even what we believe and what we chose to practice. 00:14:07.24\00:14:09.68 Yeah. 00:14:09.71\00:14:11.05 Yet at the same time, not lose the common touch, 00:14:11.08\00:14:14.92 that's what I call it. 00:14:14.95\00:14:16.28 Yeah. Because that is an exciting... 00:14:16.32\00:14:17.99 Or to lose our grounding in the faith. 00:14:18.02\00:14:19.99 You're right. 00:14:20.02\00:14:21.36 And I've often... 00:14:21.39\00:14:22.72 Well, we're getting close 00:14:22.76\00:14:24.09 to where we need to have a break. 00:14:24.13\00:14:25.46 Stay with us. 00:14:25.49\00:14:26.83 We'll be back after a short break 00:14:26.86\00:14:28.20 to continue this discussion. 00:14:28.23\00:14:29.56
