Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:04.33\00:00:06.50 Before the break, with Kingsley, 00:00:06.53\00:00:08.77 we were getting to some nitty-gritty issues 00:00:08.80\00:00:11.44 on religious liberty. 00:00:11.47\00:00:13.17 And let's just pause for a minute on the one 00:00:13.21\00:00:15.24 that in the United States and Canada that is really, 00:00:15.28\00:00:18.41 and Australia, and in England for that matter but... 00:00:18.45\00:00:20.15 it's a big issue on how Christians relate 00:00:23.25\00:00:26.86 to the new found gay and transgender rights. 00:00:26.89\00:00:31.39 And it's more of mobbing put forward 00:00:31.43\00:00:33.60 by people on both sides 00:00:33.63\00:00:36.16 that it's sort of a choice that you either have gay rights 00:00:36.20\00:00:39.20 or religious rights and, 00:00:39.23\00:00:41.40 you know, the gay community, 00:00:41.44\00:00:43.51 some of the radical ones would like to take away 00:00:43.54\00:00:45.87 the right of people of faith 00:00:45.91\00:00:47.38 to even have a view point on this, 00:00:47.41\00:00:50.01 a negative view point. 00:00:50.05\00:00:51.71 And similarly, Christians would like to restrict 00:00:51.75\00:00:55.38 the right of gays 00:00:55.42\00:00:56.75 and it comes to ahead in the famous cake case 00:00:56.79\00:00:59.65 where this baker... 00:00:59.69\00:01:02.32 We'll never quite know how he said it, 00:01:02.36\00:01:04.09 but a gay couple came, and I'm sure it was a set up 00:01:04.13\00:01:08.80 because in reality, 00:01:08.83\00:01:10.20 cake making, and wedding photography, 00:01:10.23\00:01:13.03 and things like that, 00:01:13.07\00:01:14.40 you go where there's some party go, right? 00:01:14.44\00:01:18.77 It's more than just a business transaction, 00:01:18.81\00:01:20.91 you want someone that is on, the fellow traveler, 00:01:20.94\00:01:23.41 and, you know, it's a feel good relationship. 00:01:23.45\00:01:25.91 So this gay couple came, 00:01:25.95\00:01:27.45 and asked this Christian cake maker 00:01:27.48\00:01:28.95 to make them a wedding cake. 00:01:28.98\00:01:30.32 Yes. 00:01:30.35\00:01:31.69 And no, no, thank you. 00:01:31.72\00:01:33.92 And the Supreme Court in the US upheld his right, 00:01:33.96\00:01:37.73 but they did it mostly 00:01:37.76\00:01:39.09 because the gay community maligned him a lot. 00:01:39.13\00:01:42.96 And, of course, it's not good to have someone maligned 00:01:43.00\00:01:45.13 for their faith. 00:01:45.17\00:01:46.50 So I don't think we're seeing the end of this, 00:01:46.53\00:01:49.24 but how do you see that dynamically? 00:01:49.27\00:01:51.64 You know, if you were running a cake shop, 00:01:51.67\00:01:53.17 what would you do? 00:01:53.21\00:01:54.54 Well, I can do one better than that. 00:01:54.58\00:01:56.75 I'm a minister of the gospel. 00:01:56.78\00:01:58.25 Well, let's just say you're a minister 00:01:58.28\00:01:59.61 running a cake shop. 00:01:59.65\00:02:02.35 No... 00:02:02.38\00:02:05.22 The mixing of morality, 00:02:05.25\00:02:07.49 the question of morality on what we believe, that's a... 00:02:07.52\00:02:11.59 While it is personal on a certain level, 00:02:11.63\00:02:15.23 but within the religious community, 00:02:15.26\00:02:17.53 regardless to what's your faith disposition is, 00:02:17.57\00:02:20.14 and there are those other religious organizations 00:02:20.17\00:02:25.04 that viewed it a little differently. 00:02:25.07\00:02:27.31 We are now are giving or wrestling with the idea 00:02:30.61\00:02:35.32 of where do we draw the line 00:02:35.35\00:02:37.09 with respect to what we believe, 00:02:37.12\00:02:38.55 and what we teach, and what we practice. 00:02:38.59\00:02:43.32 We need to draw the line between the desire of someone 00:02:43.36\00:02:46.83 whether their lifestyle has been chosen or whatever. 00:02:46.86\00:02:50.17 How far can we go without having to compromise 00:02:50.20\00:02:54.70 on what we believe? 00:02:54.74\00:02:56.44 Everyone has the right to choose to do 00:02:56.47\00:02:59.61 or believe what they want to. 00:02:59.64\00:03:01.84 And this is getting messy so much 00:03:01.88\00:03:03.65 so that some of my colleagues 00:03:03.68\00:03:05.75 and I choose them not to perform a certain... 00:03:05.78\00:03:11.19 That they will not perform weddings 00:03:11.22\00:03:13.92 or civil weddings as it were, 00:03:13.96\00:03:17.13 and they only keep it to the church. 00:03:17.16\00:03:20.10 Well, as a pastor, I think, that's a little bit different. 00:03:20.13\00:03:24.00 If you're a minister of religion, 00:03:24.03\00:03:26.67 but if certain type of a religion that, 00:03:26.70\00:03:29.97 you know, the subset of Christianity 00:03:30.01\00:03:31.64 is the Seventh-day Adventist. 00:03:31.67\00:03:33.24 I don't see any obligation, 00:03:33.27\00:03:35.91 and necessity or whether be a requirement for you 00:03:35.94\00:03:39.91 to perform a marriage 00:03:39.95\00:03:42.02 that's outside of the spiritual guidelines 00:03:42.05\00:03:44.65 that you adhere to. 00:03:44.69\00:03:46.12 You are a facilitator for that faith, 00:03:46.15\00:03:50.29 not of anything because the Bible does... 00:03:50.33\00:03:55.30 The Old Testament condemn 00:03:55.33\00:03:57.53 that is to facilitate witchcraft, 00:03:57.57\00:03:59.30 for example. 00:03:59.33\00:04:00.67 And I think you'd be in the same, 00:04:00.70\00:04:02.74 but that's administrating religious rights. 00:04:02.77\00:04:06.21 And even the state clearly recognizes 00:04:06.24\00:04:08.48 within the church structure, they put it as exemptions, 00:04:08.51\00:04:13.98 but out in the civil sphere, 00:04:14.02\00:04:15.88 even if you happen to be a minister, 00:04:15.92\00:04:17.29 you're running a cake shop. 00:04:17.32\00:04:19.49 I'll get you to hypothesize on this yet. 00:04:19.52\00:04:24.46 You make cakes, even wedding cakes, 00:04:24.49\00:04:26.49 and this couple comes jauntily through the door 00:04:26.53\00:04:32.03 and you're sort of taken aback 00:04:32.07\00:04:33.40 because this is not a behavior or arrangement 00:04:33.44\00:04:37.07 that is consistent with the old biblical view. 00:04:37.11\00:04:40.24 What would you do when they come, 00:04:40.28\00:04:43.48 money in the hand, yeah, 00:04:43.51\00:04:45.41 we want you to make our wedding cake. 00:04:45.45\00:04:48.15 Well, haven't come across that yet, 00:04:48.18\00:04:50.95 but since you asked the question, 00:04:50.99\00:04:55.32 I have to be true to who I am and what I believe, 00:04:55.36\00:04:59.63 and hopefully, 00:04:59.66\00:05:01.16 in explaining to them why I cannot do this 00:05:01.20\00:05:04.27 for whatever religions they were done... 00:05:04.30\00:05:05.90 For whatever reasons, they would understand that. 00:05:05.93\00:05:08.80 There's a way in which you can communicate that. 00:05:08.84\00:05:11.31 Yeah, that's exactly what I believe. 00:05:11.34\00:05:13.14 Yes. 00:05:13.17\00:05:14.51 But there's a bit more to than that. 00:05:14.54\00:05:15.88 What if, after you communicated 00:05:15.91\00:05:17.58 they still want you to do the cake? 00:05:17.61\00:05:20.48 You'd have to refuse, 00:05:20.52\00:05:21.85 probably, have to refuse it because you... 00:05:21.88\00:05:24.82 Why would you refuse to make a cake 00:05:24.85\00:05:26.39 for a murderer, say? 00:05:26.42\00:05:28.79 Well, a murderer wanting the cake made 00:05:32.43\00:05:36.26 because you asked me the question about... 00:05:36.30\00:05:38.87 Or a wife beater... 00:05:38.90\00:05:41.20 A wife beater. 00:05:41.24\00:05:44.21 Or a child abuser. 00:05:44.24\00:05:45.57 Yeah, they're all moral infract, 00:05:45.61\00:05:47.14 they all have a moral component to that, right? 00:05:47.18\00:05:51.15 I wouldn't... 00:05:51.18\00:05:52.58 That you'd have to deal with as each person comes. 00:05:52.61\00:05:56.38 In reality, you don't know that there's such people. 00:05:56.42\00:05:58.55 Well, if you don't know that's not... 00:05:58.59\00:05:59.92 If you're running a cake shop, 00:05:59.95\00:06:02.56 you got to presume that 00:06:02.59\00:06:03.93 a reasonable number of the people 00:06:03.96\00:06:05.29 coming in the door are guilty of some infraction, 00:06:05.33\00:06:08.10 moral or legal or maybe all of the above, 00:06:08.13\00:06:12.03 the worst you can imagine. 00:06:12.07\00:06:13.74 But, you see, you cannot judge, 00:06:13.77\00:06:15.30 you cannot judge motives by the people. 00:06:15.34\00:06:18.81 Just as anyone can come to a church on any week, 00:06:18.84\00:06:22.08 and any day of the week, Saturday or Sunday. 00:06:22.11\00:06:25.08 You can't judge them just by how they look 00:06:25.11\00:06:27.35 or what they say, you judge them by what they... 00:06:27.38\00:06:30.49 How they behave, unless you find out. 00:06:30.52\00:06:33.15 So 'cause you're not accountable 00:06:33.19\00:06:34.52 for what you don't know. 00:06:34.56\00:06:35.89 But I think, you and I are in agreement 00:06:35.92\00:06:37.29 with what you said early. 00:06:37.33\00:06:38.69 It seems to me that if some... 00:06:38.73\00:06:41.70 First of all, in the real world, 00:06:41.73\00:06:43.70 they're not much going to come. 00:06:43.73\00:06:45.20 This was clearly a test case from a gay couple 00:06:45.23\00:06:48.74 representing an organization 00:06:48.77\00:06:51.07 wanting to flush out Christian bigotry and they... 00:06:51.11\00:06:54.14 I'm not saying it necessarily was, 00:06:54.18\00:06:56.95 but if they came. 00:06:56.98\00:07:01.25 It seems like the cake maker would, 00:07:01.28\00:07:03.15 they would... 00:07:03.18\00:07:05.09 Maybe by their behavior or something, 00:07:05.12\00:07:07.26 it would be sort of self-evident. 00:07:07.29\00:07:08.99 Well, two males I guess are self evident, gay couple. 00:07:09.02\00:07:12.23 It seemed to me very reasonable, legal, 00:07:12.26\00:07:15.26 and moral for such a cake maker to say, 00:07:15.30\00:07:19.57 "Thank you for choosing my business. 00:07:19.60\00:07:23.17 You may not be aware of it, I'm a Christian," 00:07:23.20\00:07:26.41 or you could identify yourself further, 00:07:26.44\00:07:29.91 you know, "in my reading of the Bible, 00:07:29.94\00:07:32.58 you know, 00:07:32.61\00:07:33.95 your lifestyle is something that really is not recommended, 00:07:33.98\00:07:37.19 and, you know, I have views on that, 00:07:37.22\00:07:39.15 and you should be aware of this, 00:07:39.19\00:07:40.99 and well, I thank you for choosing my business. 00:07:41.02\00:07:44.03 I may not be the best choice 00:07:44.06\00:07:46.36 to really do the full justice to this cake 00:07:46.39\00:07:48.63 that you would, perhaps expect. 00:07:48.66\00:07:50.70 But if you still want me to do it, 00:07:50.73\00:07:52.57 I will do what I can." 00:07:52.60\00:07:55.04 'Cause the argument is, 00:07:55.07\00:07:56.40 you can't put yourself creatively into it, 00:07:56.44\00:07:58.87 which you couldn't. 00:07:58.91\00:08:00.24 But then there sounds like an element of a compromise. 00:08:00.28\00:08:04.01 Well, that's the same compromise as Jesus. 00:08:04.05\00:08:06.85 I can't see that Jesus was drunkard 00:08:06.88\00:08:09.88 and a glutton or whatever, 00:08:09.92\00:08:11.25 but He associated freely with such people, right? 00:08:11.29\00:08:15.36 But it seems to me 00:08:15.39\00:08:17.19 that sort of thing lays at the opposition, 00:08:17.23\00:08:19.86 lays out a reference to them 00:08:19.89\00:08:23.37 that they're not in accordance with your moral view. 00:08:23.40\00:08:26.07 You're not going to be part of what they're doing, 00:08:26.10\00:08:30.04 but it's just a minimal effort, 00:08:30.07\00:08:32.74 you know, which is mechanical and not creative 00:08:32.77\00:08:35.14 for you're putting yourself fully into it. 00:08:35.18\00:08:36.81 You'll do what you can, 00:08:36.85\00:08:38.41 but it's not really part of their procedure, 00:08:38.45\00:08:41.98 and I think, in reality, if with such an explanation, 00:08:42.02\00:08:45.49 why would they continue? 00:08:45.52\00:08:47.12 They're going to go elsewhere, 00:08:47.16\00:08:48.49 but you've not said anything offensive nor illegal. 00:08:48.52\00:08:53.43 I don't think with that sort of a response 00:08:53.46\00:08:55.60 you could be accused of deep prejudice 00:08:55.63\00:08:59.10 or not wanting to deal with them or whatever. 00:08:59.13\00:09:01.00 Well, you see, each case is different. 00:09:01.04\00:09:03.24 They could very well say, "Well, you're discriminating." 00:09:03.27\00:09:06.88 You have this service to the public. 00:09:06.91\00:09:09.24 You're discriminating against us 00:09:09.28\00:09:10.78 because of what you might think or what you believe. 00:09:10.81\00:09:14.05 And here in lies that grey area is to how far do you go? 00:09:14.08\00:09:19.75 And ultimately, it comes down to conscience. 00:09:19.79\00:09:22.32 My real point is, I think, 00:09:22.36\00:09:24.43 there is a charitable way for Christians 00:09:24.46\00:09:27.20 to deal with those that are out of harmony 00:09:27.23\00:09:30.07 with what we believe. 00:09:30.10\00:09:32.00 By definition, we're outreaching all the time 00:09:32.03\00:09:34.40 and dealing with non-believers. 00:09:34.44\00:09:37.31 But we shouldn't encourage this compromise, 00:09:37.34\00:09:39.54 so this conflict rather, which is being set up, 00:09:39.57\00:09:42.44 I think, somewhat falsely. 00:09:42.48\00:09:44.01 Why should Christians be the enemy of the non-believer? 00:09:44.05\00:09:48.72 We're there to reconcile them to God. 00:09:48.75\00:09:50.09 Yeah, exactly. 00:09:50.12\00:09:51.45 But we've made a rot in many instances 00:09:51.49\00:09:53.89 by not representing well. 00:09:53.92\00:09:56.26 Yes. 00:09:56.29\00:09:57.63 And that's really where I'm coming. 00:09:57.66\00:09:58.99 Okay, so what we have to do in the public arena, 00:09:59.03\00:10:03.10 they say, 00:10:03.13\00:10:04.47 "Make a friend before you need a friend." 00:10:04.50\00:10:07.24 And you're looking out for the interest 00:10:07.27\00:10:10.04 of that individual, 00:10:10.07\00:10:11.67 and then let's find the common ground 00:10:11.71\00:10:13.91 where we can have a mutual relationship. 00:10:13.94\00:10:15.54 That's sort of what I am saying. 00:10:15.58\00:10:16.91 Okay, so... 00:10:16.95\00:10:18.28 And we need to diffuse this a little 00:10:18.31\00:10:19.65 because it's not in anyone's interest 00:10:19.68\00:10:21.02 to step up this great enmity 00:10:21.05\00:10:23.28 between Christian interests and civil interests. 00:10:23.32\00:10:25.65 Yes, and I honestly believe that 00:10:25.69\00:10:28.86 this is the sweet thing about 00:10:28.89\00:10:31.13 public views on religious liberty. 00:10:31.16\00:10:33.73 Making connections, being sensitive, being open, 00:10:33.76\00:10:38.03 and treating everyone as nicely and fairly as you possibly can 00:10:38.07\00:10:42.17 in the process of trying to offer a service 00:10:42.20\00:10:45.74 and to be open-minded, and that's what we do. 00:10:45.77\00:10:50.05 Jesus was asked many trick questions 00:10:50.08\00:10:53.01 by those trying to have Him stumble 00:10:53.05\00:10:57.29 on the realities of the day. 00:10:57.32\00:10:59.29 He was asked, for example, "This tower that fell," 00:10:59.32\00:11:01.86 you know, with those, I think it was 17. 00:11:01.89\00:11:03.99 Well, they're more wicked than anyone else. 00:11:04.03\00:11:05.99 And Jesus said, "Of course, not." 00:11:06.03\00:11:08.03 And with religious liberty, 00:11:08.06\00:11:09.60 we're dealing with really modern day issues, 00:11:09.63\00:11:12.90 not always obviously religious, 00:11:12.93\00:11:15.37 sometimes people of faith 00:11:15.40\00:11:17.01 put up against different moral choices 00:11:17.04\00:11:20.01 as the case with the baker. 00:11:20.04\00:11:22.54 But as always, 00:11:22.58\00:11:23.91 we need to apply the principle of freedom in Christ, 00:11:23.95\00:11:27.55 a full human potential brought to bear 00:11:27.58\00:11:30.19 on all the complicating issues of modern life, 00:11:30.22\00:11:33.52 most of which 00:11:33.56\00:11:34.89 when it's boiled down to the final point 00:11:34.92\00:11:38.06 really devolve around 00:11:38.09\00:11:39.53 how do we represent our Lord and our Creator, 00:11:39.56\00:11:43.23 and apply "Morality to present day situations." 00:11:43.26\00:11:49.07 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:11:49.10\00:11:52.14
