Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:04.20\00:00:05.83 Before the break, 00:00:05.87\00:00:07.20 we were in India 00:00:07.24\00:00:08.64 and getting very philosophical and otherworldly. 00:00:08.67\00:00:12.81 India is an interesting country, 00:00:12.84\00:00:14.38 it's moving at the speed of light into the 21st century. 00:00:14.41\00:00:18.98 Last time, I was there I stopped off... 00:00:19.01\00:00:20.95 now I forgot the name of the town, 00:00:20.98\00:00:22.32 but they have their own Silicon Valley 00:00:22.35\00:00:23.69 in the Hill Country. 00:00:23.72\00:00:25.95 It's much more technological... 00:00:25.99\00:00:27.42 It's probably in Bombay or Pune. 00:00:27.46\00:00:32.19 It was in the hill country, but anyhow, in the middle. 00:00:32.23\00:00:35.50 But the point is 00:00:35.53\00:00:36.87 India's moving toward technological advancements 00:00:36.90\00:00:39.57 very quickly, they make their own cars. 00:00:39.60\00:00:41.50 Right. 00:00:41.54\00:00:42.87 And I seem to remember that 00:00:42.90\00:00:45.04 they're moving towards space vehicles and all the rest. 00:00:45.07\00:00:48.64 They have the atomic bomb. 00:00:48.68\00:00:50.45 So they're not to be dismissed. 00:00:50.48\00:00:52.18 They're modernizing, 00:00:52.21\00:00:53.55 but it still remains a massively populous country 00:00:53.58\00:00:57.42 with huge challenges to feed and to occupy the citizenry. 00:00:57.45\00:01:04.26 But on the religious level, 00:01:04.29\00:01:05.79 it needs an enduring challenge out 00:01:05.83\00:01:09.83 to untangle all of the religious identities 00:01:09.86\00:01:14.70 and connect from a Western Christian point of view. 00:01:14.74\00:01:18.51 And so you were privileged, 00:01:18.54\00:01:19.87 I think, to be there for a while. 00:01:19.91\00:01:21.24 Right. 00:01:21.28\00:01:22.61 While we were there, 00:01:22.64\00:01:23.98 our house was open to the students 00:01:24.01\00:01:27.92 from other campuses, 00:01:27.95\00:01:29.78 who had friends on the campuses, Spicer. 00:01:29.82\00:01:33.62 And we saw over a period of time, again, 00:01:33.66\00:01:40.00 how powerful the gospel really was. 00:01:40.03\00:01:43.16 By watching these kids from all different places 00:01:43.20\00:01:45.93 in the same place, 00:01:45.97\00:01:47.67 eating the same food, talking about things that 00:01:47.70\00:01:51.04 they would normally not talk about. 00:01:51.07\00:01:52.67 In fact, we had young people in our homes. 00:01:52.71\00:01:55.71 For example, at the time, 00:01:55.74\00:01:57.08 Eritrea and Somalia were at war, 00:01:57.11\00:01:59.78 and you had these kids sitting down in our house, 00:01:59.81\00:02:02.78 right? 00:02:02.82\00:02:04.15 There were things we couldn't do in the classroom 00:02:04.19\00:02:05.52 that we could do at home and forming relationships 00:02:05.55\00:02:08.26 and getting a better understanding. 00:02:08.29\00:02:10.56 And also from the standpoint of having been born in England 00:02:10.59\00:02:13.66 and lived in the United States and then going to India shaped 00:02:13.70\00:02:18.97 how that journey developed. 00:02:19.00\00:02:22.70 Did you have many dealings 00:02:22.74\00:02:25.57 with the Sikhs, with Sikhism, and... 00:02:25.61\00:02:28.21 Not really because we were down in the southern part of India. 00:02:28.24\00:02:33.11 There's an element of Sikhism all over India, 00:02:33.15\00:02:35.18 but it originates in the North West. 00:02:35.22\00:02:38.25 In Kashmir, for example. Well, not as such that... 00:02:38.29\00:02:43.12 Our connection with the Sikh community 00:02:43.16\00:02:44.86 would have happened in the United Kingdom, right? 00:02:44.89\00:02:48.33 But the confluence... 00:02:48.36\00:02:50.23 Yeah, I'm bringing it up for a reason 00:02:50.27\00:02:51.60 because from post 9/11 in the US in particular, 00:02:51.63\00:02:56.27 there's been a great confusion in many people's minds 00:02:56.30\00:03:00.04 between Sikhism and Islam, and they're not even close. 00:03:00.08\00:03:04.31 Well, I shouldn't say they're not close. 00:03:04.35\00:03:06.15 There's an element of influence, 00:03:06.18\00:03:07.62 but they're extremely distinct. 00:03:07.65\00:03:10.05 They are. 00:03:10.09\00:03:11.52 And Sikhism doesn't have any correspondence 00:03:11.55\00:03:15.92 to actions of the Islamic community. 00:03:15.96\00:03:19.46 But what do you know about Sikhs? 00:03:19.49\00:03:21.73 I, again, what do I know... They're a warrior... 00:03:21.76\00:03:25.80 Yeah, they are warrior... 00:03:25.83\00:03:27.17 Offshoot that has elements of Islam in their history and, 00:03:27.20\00:03:31.71 of course, trying to combine this with Hinduism, 00:03:31.74\00:03:36.24 but they are more tied up to one God is that... 00:03:36.28\00:03:39.11 That's what I want to respond to. 00:03:39.15\00:03:41.88 They believe in monotheistic God. 00:03:41.92\00:03:45.19 They're very, very structured, 00:03:45.22\00:03:47.56 it's an amazing religion to observe. 00:03:47.59\00:03:51.56 And they have probably more connections to 00:03:51.59\00:03:54.30 what we believe 00:03:54.33\00:03:55.66 in terms of how their communities are developed. 00:03:55.70\00:03:57.77 Like I was saying, we experienced them in England, 00:03:57.80\00:04:01.34 but we never got to spend time with them. 00:04:01.37\00:04:04.27 There were no Sikhs coming down to South India 00:04:04.31\00:04:06.57 to Spicer in particular. 00:04:06.61\00:04:08.98 I recall an experience 00:04:09.01\00:04:10.35 if I can just flip from India to here. 00:04:10.38\00:04:13.28 The week after 9/11, it was the Thursday. 00:04:13.31\00:04:17.12 I had to go and speak at a church in Tennessee. 00:04:17.15\00:04:20.26 I was a little afraid of jumping on a plane. 00:04:20.29\00:04:22.72 This was the Thursday, no, the week, 10 days after. 00:04:22.76\00:04:26.16 I remember for several months after, 00:04:26.19\00:04:28.33 you know, quiet didn't know what was gonna happen. 00:04:28.36\00:04:30.33 And so travel is an education. 00:04:30.37\00:04:34.74 So we're on the plane, and then a Sikh family, 00:04:34.77\00:04:38.54 brother had his turban on. 00:04:38.57\00:04:40.84 And they had a little boy, 00:04:40.88\00:04:42.34 probably around seven or eight years old. 00:04:42.38\00:04:45.05 They get onto the plane, 00:04:45.08\00:04:47.42 and they were sitting adjacent to where I was. 00:04:47.45\00:04:51.25 And I remember the little boy kind of looking around. 00:04:51.29\00:04:54.66 And when he sat down he said to his father and mother, 00:04:54.69\00:04:57.89 "Why are people looking at us like this?" 00:04:57.93\00:05:02.80 And his father said, 00:05:02.83\00:05:04.37 "Well, it may be because they don't know us," 00:05:04.40\00:05:06.50 but he was not old enough to understand the implications 00:05:06.53\00:05:11.17 and the innuendos 00:05:11.21\00:05:12.97 and how people are feeling 00:05:13.01\00:05:15.64 about this group of people who... 00:05:15.68\00:05:17.61 very few people may on that plane 00:05:17.65\00:05:19.31 may have known as being different to 00:05:19.35\00:05:22.42 the ones who actually carried out the bombing. 00:05:22.45\00:05:24.75 And I sat down, and I thought to myself, 00:05:24.79\00:05:27.76 "This young boy is experiencing something 00:05:27.79\00:05:32.46 that his father could not explain it. 00:05:32.49\00:05:34.86 He didn't want to at that particular time." 00:05:34.90\00:05:36.36 But I could sense that the disconnect and how... 00:05:36.40\00:05:41.27 I'm sure it's traumatic for them. 00:05:41.30\00:05:42.84 It was. 00:05:42.87\00:05:44.21 And to be fully really fair, 00:05:44.24\00:05:46.41 I'm sure it was traumatic for many Muslims 00:05:46.44\00:05:49.84 in the United States who... 00:05:49.88\00:05:51.21 Right. 00:05:51.25\00:05:52.58 Not personally were any way involved, and many of them, 00:05:52.61\00:05:55.65 most of them, hopefully, 00:05:55.68\00:05:57.35 not even sympathetic to what was done in the name 00:05:57.39\00:05:59.69 or involving their religion. 00:05:59.72\00:06:02.26 There's more logic to why they might come under a frown, 00:06:02.29\00:06:05.29 but for someone that's not even of that religion 00:06:05.33\00:06:09.06 absolutely to be seen as a threat, 00:06:09.10\00:06:11.53 that must have been traumatizing. 00:06:11.57\00:06:13.44 It was traumatic, and I felt the trauma, 00:06:13.47\00:06:16.00 you know, watching that play out, 00:06:16.04\00:06:18.91 and I was thankful to God, again, 00:06:18.94\00:06:21.81 on the pilgrimage journey 00:06:21.84\00:06:23.18 that I had an opportunity to be able to engage them 00:06:23.21\00:06:26.51 in two different contexts but still could feel as, 00:06:26.55\00:06:31.99 you know, 00:06:32.02\00:06:33.36 the general mood of people who look different 00:06:33.39\00:06:36.26 and come from other different places can be aligned 00:06:36.29\00:06:39.76 or misaligned with things that they have no connection to. 00:06:39.79\00:06:45.27 Religion is a very interesting dynamic. 00:06:45.30\00:06:47.24 It is. 00:06:47.27\00:06:48.60 And the Sikhs as a community and aggregable community 00:06:48.64\00:06:55.31 and most people don't know their religion. 00:06:55.34\00:06:59.81 They're not violent as a community, 00:06:59.85\00:07:03.08 but it is interesting that they celebrate, 00:07:03.12\00:07:05.65 if not a violence, than a warlike thing. 00:07:05.69\00:07:08.02 Yes, they've got that ceremonial sword 00:07:08.06\00:07:10.49 that they wear. 00:07:10.53\00:07:11.86 It is the Kirpan or something. Yeah. 00:07:11.89\00:07:13.23 The ceremonial sword, 00:07:13.26\00:07:15.66 and as India found out, 00:07:15.70\00:07:21.27 there was that rebellion. 00:07:21.30\00:07:22.64 I don't think it was in Kashmir per se, 00:07:22.67\00:07:24.24 but at the center of the Sikh community around Amritsar, 00:07:24.27\00:07:29.14 there was a civil war for a while in India 00:07:29.18\00:07:32.45 and then the Prime Minister of India, 00:07:32.48\00:07:34.18 Mrs. Gandhi was killed by one of the Sikh guy. 00:07:34.22\00:07:36.42 Right, of course, yes. 00:07:36.45\00:07:37.79 So my point is that it's not just Islam that has Jihad 00:07:37.82\00:07:41.69 and an element that can turn into violence, 00:07:41.72\00:07:44.33 Sikhism has it too, 00:07:44.36\00:07:46.46 Christianity's had it with the crusades, 00:07:46.49\00:07:48.36 and so on, and from one religion to another, 00:07:48.40\00:07:51.70 the connection can be more direct 00:07:51.73\00:07:54.50 or it may just be as simple as the other 00:07:54.54\00:07:56.64 and then take antagonism as a buildup. 00:07:56.67\00:07:59.31 But religion can turn anti-social and violent, 00:07:59.34\00:08:04.88 unfortunately, quite quickly. 00:08:04.91\00:08:06.85 And if I can kind of migrate from India 00:08:06.88\00:08:12.29 back here to the United States. 00:08:12.32\00:08:13.99 Your pilgrimage is getting longer and longer, you're... 00:08:14.02\00:08:15.92 My pilgrimage is moving on. Yes, it is. 00:08:15.96\00:08:18.79 You'll get your frequent flyer bonus. 00:08:18.83\00:08:23.37 Here is the other thing too, and going back to 00:08:23.40\00:08:26.43 what I love about this particular ministry 00:08:26.47\00:08:28.64 in terms of engagement and things like that, 00:08:28.67\00:08:32.74 I remember transitioning from a Sunday keeping church 00:08:32.77\00:08:37.15 to become a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:08:37.18\00:08:40.18 And that was a culture shock in and of itself 00:08:40.22\00:08:43.42 because of what they teach you. 00:08:43.45\00:08:44.79 And Seventh-day Adventist worship, 00:08:44.82\00:08:46.79 the day that was given in the Old Testament and first, 00:08:46.82\00:08:50.59 the seventh day Sabbath, 00:08:50.63\00:08:51.96 moralizing creation is Saturday. 00:08:51.99\00:08:53.96 Right. 00:08:54.00\00:08:55.33 But I do remember coming in 00:08:55.36\00:08:57.43 and trying to understand this thing about the Sabbath and, 00:08:57.47\00:09:02.60 you know, and all the other things 00:09:02.64\00:09:03.97 and Ellen G. White, and the teachings... 00:09:04.01\00:09:06.71 She was a prophetic... 00:09:06.74\00:09:08.58 A woman with a prophetic gifts 00:09:08.61\00:09:10.08 that helped found the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:09:10.11\00:09:12.95 And I knew that later, 00:09:12.98\00:09:14.65 but I did not accept her straight away. 00:09:14.68\00:09:17.35 But I could not help feeling even among our community, 00:09:17.39\00:09:21.92 the Seventh-day Adventist community, 00:09:21.96\00:09:23.56 just coming in 00:09:23.59\00:09:25.03 feeling as though I was not totally accepted because, 00:09:25.06\00:09:30.33 you know, those first day people, 00:09:30.37\00:09:32.27 these terminologies, these wreck frame 00:09:32.30\00:09:34.40 of references were not complimentary. 00:09:34.44\00:09:36.91 But among us... 00:09:36.94\00:09:38.27 even today, you know, 00:09:38.31\00:09:40.78 how we view other people who may go to 00:09:40.81\00:09:43.71 "Oh, you've got the mark of the beast 00:09:43.75\00:09:45.08 because you worshipped on Sunday," 00:09:45.11\00:09:46.45 and all these kinds of things. 00:09:46.48\00:09:47.82 Definitely need to use religion as in a pejorative way 00:09:47.85\00:09:51.35 against anyone else. 00:09:51.39\00:09:52.72 Yes. It's fine. 00:09:52.75\00:09:54.59 You and I believe that we have a correct theology 00:09:54.62\00:09:57.16 and we found the truth, 00:09:57.19\00:09:58.53 but we need to look at others in a charitable way 00:09:58.56\00:10:00.80 and grant them that same right. 00:10:00.83\00:10:02.26 Yes, I totally agree with that. 00:10:02.30\00:10:05.00 So here we are, again, 00:10:05.03\00:10:07.94 my journey has taken so many twists and turns 00:10:07.97\00:10:11.44 in the last 30-some years. 00:10:11.47\00:10:13.78 But I'm glad for the journey and it's been a benefit to me 00:10:13.81\00:10:16.58 and I thank God for the experience. 00:10:16.61\00:10:21.42 I remember one day visiting Myanmar 00:10:21.45\00:10:24.12 and walking through the capital of Yangon, 00:10:24.15\00:10:26.86 I think, as they call it now. 00:10:26.89\00:10:28.49 And coming upon an incredible monument 00:10:28.52\00:10:32.76 with all of the deities, 00:10:32.79\00:10:34.56 I think they were Hindu deities, it wasn't Buddhist, 00:10:34.60\00:10:37.03 but all of the deities intertwined 00:10:37.07\00:10:39.57 and scrambling over each other 00:10:39.60\00:10:41.50 in a great mix of divine personages as we like. 00:10:41.54\00:10:48.38 And I had a trouble applying myself to that. 00:10:48.41\00:10:52.35 But this has been the human problem from the beginning. 00:10:52.38\00:10:55.58 Back in the Old Testament, 00:10:55.62\00:10:56.95 Moses there on the mountain said to God, 00:10:56.99\00:10:59.49 "Show me Your face" 00:10:59.52\00:11:02.99 And who can look upon the face of God. 00:11:03.02\00:11:05.03 But Moses was shown and explicated by God himself, 00:11:05.06\00:11:09.23 His character, and I like to think 00:11:09.26\00:11:11.70 that with religious liberty, 00:11:11.73\00:11:13.57 we can look into the character of God 00:11:13.60\00:11:15.77 and apply it to our fellas, rediscover 00:11:15.80\00:11:18.81 what it is to be creatures of the God of the universe. 00:11:18.84\00:11:24.65 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:11:24.68\00:11:27.58
