Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:04.20\00:00:05.83 Before the break, with guest Kingsley Palmer, 00:00:05.87\00:00:10.94 we were sort of invoking your English background 00:00:10.97\00:00:13.51 and my Australian and riffing on about 00:00:13.54\00:00:18.11 what had informed English democracy 00:00:18.15\00:00:20.52 and how it relates to religion and politics. 00:00:20.55\00:00:23.65 And then, of course, 00:00:23.69\00:00:25.02 always some applications to the US. 00:00:25.05\00:00:27.79 And in the break, 00:00:27.82\00:00:29.16 we were continuing the discussion. 00:00:29.19\00:00:32.39 There's no question that, you know, 00:00:32.43\00:00:35.26 I think you'd say it in the English system, 00:00:35.30\00:00:37.37 religion is a private matter and you often 00:00:37.40\00:00:40.27 can keep that private, and it's not so contentious. 00:00:40.30\00:00:44.41 It's a very public matter in the US, 00:00:44.44\00:00:46.04 and it's very contentious. 00:00:46.07\00:00:48.21 I can hardly remember it, 00:00:48.24\00:00:50.21 it more polarizing than it is today. 00:00:50.25\00:00:53.82 And so I'm just sort of fishing for some guidelines 00:00:53.85\00:00:56.99 from the English system, 00:00:57.02\00:01:00.22 and to reiterate what we had discuss 00:01:00.26\00:01:01.96 very polarizing in Parliament in England, 00:01:01.99\00:01:04.39 but the society is relatively benign. 00:01:04.43\00:01:06.80 I know, in London, 00:01:06.83\00:01:08.16 I've been to some suburbs 00:01:08.20\00:01:09.53 where you might not feel even safe going, 00:01:09.56\00:01:12.33 but that's true of any big city, 00:01:12.37\00:01:14.10 unfortunately. 00:01:14.14\00:01:15.57 But England, generally, in the countryside, 00:01:15.60\00:01:18.07 it's like you step back in time. 00:01:18.11\00:01:20.64 But I must say this, I must say this. 00:01:20.68\00:01:23.38 I want people very, very clear. 00:01:23.41\00:01:26.01 Growing up as an immigrant, in Britain, 00:01:26.05\00:01:29.92 it was not all land of hope and glory. 00:01:29.95\00:01:34.62 We came to rebuild the country 00:01:34.66\00:01:38.23 from all parts of the world. 00:01:38.26\00:01:41.30 And you had this stratified system of class, 00:01:41.33\00:01:45.33 which kept immigrants of color 00:01:45.37\00:01:50.81 at a lower level. 00:01:50.84\00:01:52.27 It was in the educational system, 00:01:52.31\00:01:54.64 it was in the employment situation. 00:01:54.68\00:01:58.11 I saw that firsthand. 00:01:58.15\00:02:00.12 And I know how that felt. 00:02:00.15\00:02:02.72 Then, coming here, 00:02:02.75\00:02:05.62 I've seen much of the same thing. 00:02:05.65\00:02:06.99 And I've spent most of my life here. 00:02:07.02\00:02:09.99 And people, that's why they say, 00:02:10.03\00:02:12.63 religion is a... 00:02:12.66\00:02:15.33 That's a private matter. 00:02:15.36\00:02:16.70 But it also has implications 00:02:16.73\00:02:18.93 because not so much of what we're appearing 00:02:18.97\00:02:20.94 not to do or to do is, 00:02:20.97\00:02:23.84 in the meantime, 00:02:23.87\00:02:25.21 how are you taking care of the individuals. 00:02:25.24\00:02:27.64 I go back to the Stranger Within My Gate 00:02:27.68\00:02:29.68 in terms of programs, 00:02:29.71\00:02:31.85 in terms of opportunities and things like that. 00:02:31.88\00:02:33.78 It's almost a parallel 00:02:33.82\00:02:35.68 that I see here in the United States. 00:02:35.72\00:02:37.75 I've been here nearly 40 years, on and off, 00:02:37.79\00:02:39.49 nearly 40 years. 00:02:39.52\00:02:40.86 I've grown up here. 00:02:40.89\00:02:42.22 Well, it's many of the same dynamics, 00:02:42.26\00:02:43.59 you're right. 00:02:43.63\00:02:44.96 But let me really throw a wrench into your thoughts. 00:02:44.99\00:02:46.36 Okay. 00:02:46.39\00:02:48.13 In England, there've been, 00:02:48.16\00:02:51.27 I think, arguably more embracing of Islamic refugees 00:02:51.30\00:02:55.50 that are more recent than others. 00:02:55.54\00:03:00.38 By my understanding, 00:03:00.41\00:03:02.34 the Islamic wave of immigrants is certainly, 00:03:02.38\00:03:04.71 in recent decades, not immediately 00:03:04.75\00:03:06.75 after World War II, into England. 00:03:06.78\00:03:11.05 So Islam seems to have been somewhat compatible in England 00:03:11.09\00:03:16.16 as well as other political stripes. 00:03:16.19\00:03:20.56 Remember, Marx and Engels 00:03:20.60\00:03:23.47 did their studies in England. 00:03:23.50\00:03:24.83 England's been an interesting place. 00:03:24.87\00:03:26.20 In fact, 00:03:26.23\00:03:27.57 I'd even read that 00:03:27.60\00:03:28.94 there was almost an understanding 00:03:28.97\00:03:30.31 with some of these revolutionaries 00:03:30.34\00:03:31.67 that they could operate in England 00:03:31.71\00:03:33.04 as long as they didn't turn it on England. 00:03:33.07\00:03:34.41 Go out and... 00:03:34.44\00:03:35.78 So it's been accommodating. 00:03:35.81\00:03:37.58 But one area of accommodation that historically, 00:03:37.61\00:03:40.52 in England, was very problematic 00:03:40.55\00:03:43.59 was the Roman Catholic Church of England divide. 00:03:43.62\00:03:47.42 Did you see... 00:03:47.46\00:03:49.56 You mentioned, in another program, 00:03:49.59\00:03:52.03 Northern Ireland, obviously, the Irish question continued. 00:03:52.06\00:03:55.46 But is it seen in England still as an us versus them 00:03:55.50\00:04:00.80 religious thing... 00:04:00.84\00:04:02.34 No, it isn't because... Catholic versus Protestants. 00:04:02.37\00:04:04.27 Because once the hostilities, they had to be in agreement, 00:04:04.31\00:04:07.14 right? 00:04:07.18\00:04:08.51 We're going to have to live and let live. 00:04:08.54\00:04:10.25 Shin Fein became political, 00:04:10.28\00:04:12.95 became part of the process of decision making. 00:04:12.98\00:04:16.45 Northern Ireland wanted to remain Protestant, 00:04:16.48\00:04:19.19 so to speak, and live and let live. 00:04:19.22\00:04:23.43 And so it became more tolerant. 00:04:23.46\00:04:26.19 We don't have the kind of vitriol 00:04:26.23\00:04:28.20 that we used to have. 00:04:28.23\00:04:29.70 However, 00:04:29.73\00:04:31.07 I wish I could say the same for what I'm saying here. 00:04:31.10\00:04:34.00 That's where I'm leaving next. 00:04:34.04\00:04:35.40 Okay. 00:04:35.44\00:04:36.77 So why the difference? 00:04:36.81\00:04:38.14 What's going on here? 00:04:38.17\00:04:40.51 Again, I think ignorance plays on an awful part. 00:04:40.54\00:04:44.21 Now, of course, the United States 00:04:44.25\00:04:48.05 has a recent history of severe issues 00:04:48.08\00:04:53.52 between Catholics and Protestants. 00:04:53.56\00:04:55.52 When I say recent, not our lifetime, but, 00:04:55.56\00:05:00.70 you know, 00:05:00.73\00:05:02.06 the Irish question in the US was incredible. 00:05:02.10\00:05:04.10 I mean, they were seen as not just so much Irish 00:05:04.13\00:05:07.90 as Catholics coming here into a Protestant country. 00:05:07.94\00:05:10.51 And there was extreme violence against them. 00:05:10.54\00:05:14.11 The anti Catholicism in the US was severe. 00:05:14.14\00:05:16.48 And just before I came to the US, 00:05:16.51\00:05:19.18 President Kennedy was elected here. 00:05:19.21\00:05:21.02 And that was sort of the last gasp 00:05:21.05\00:05:22.68 for really vociferous opposition 00:05:22.72\00:05:25.89 to Catholic involvement. 00:05:25.92\00:05:27.26 And, you know, today, 00:05:27.29\00:05:28.62 Catholics are at all levels of government and society, 00:05:28.66\00:05:30.96 but I'm not really sure the underlying 00:05:30.99\00:05:35.10 divide between religions has gone away in the US. 00:05:35.13\00:05:38.63 No, it hasn't. 00:05:38.67\00:05:40.17 And I believe they're still... 00:05:40.20\00:05:41.87 In fact, if anything, 00:05:41.90\00:05:43.24 is I'm seeing a reemergence 00:05:43.27\00:05:46.47 of the deadly cocktail 00:05:46.51\00:05:50.45 of mixing politics 00:05:50.48\00:05:53.45 with your fundamental Christian beliefs. 00:05:53.48\00:05:57.52 And it's not just limited to Catholics and Protestants. 00:05:57.55\00:06:00.46 Yes, as you rightly said, 00:06:00.49\00:06:01.96 they are in different strata of government, 00:06:01.99\00:06:05.46 right, because they've been here long enough. 00:06:05.49\00:06:08.13 But prophetically speaking, 00:06:08.16\00:06:09.70 we all know this, in Seventh-day Adventist, 00:06:09.73\00:06:11.33 what's going to happen, you know? 00:06:11.37\00:06:12.93 What is it? Tell our viewers. 00:06:12.97\00:06:14.80 Well, yeah, we believe that there's going to be 00:06:14.84\00:06:19.47 a reemergence of Catholicism, 00:06:19.51\00:06:25.98 you know, with respect to resurgence... 00:06:26.01\00:06:27.38 Resurgence might be the word. 00:06:27.42\00:06:29.08 Resurgence of Catholicism in terms of 00:06:29.12\00:06:34.46 the right to believe 00:06:34.49\00:06:35.82 and be independent in your belief 00:06:35.86\00:06:38.13 no matter what faith you belong to, 00:06:38.16\00:06:40.70 and pretty much a repeat of history 00:06:40.73\00:06:44.47 from the 15th or 16th century, prophetically, 00:06:44.50\00:06:47.64 where there's going to be a convergence 00:06:47.67\00:06:50.11 of church and state 00:06:50.14\00:06:51.47 where church will determine what the state thinks, 00:06:51.51\00:06:54.74 how it behaves. 00:06:54.78\00:06:56.31 And the most dangerous part about that is we will not... 00:06:56.34\00:07:02.08 It's going to be... 00:07:02.12\00:07:03.49 It's an offense to what we consider 00:07:03.52\00:07:05.95 to be freedom to think, and to believe, 00:07:05.99\00:07:07.99 and to choose what I... 00:07:08.02\00:07:09.66 Part of what you say has already happened. 00:07:09.69\00:07:11.39 Yes. 00:07:11.43\00:07:12.76 And now it seems self-evident, but, you know, certainly, 00:07:12.79\00:07:16.46 a century ago or a lifetime ago, 00:07:16.50\00:07:19.27 you'd have been laughed out of the discussion 00:07:19.30\00:07:23.10 if you'd said that Rome would become 00:07:23.14\00:07:24.71 the dominant religious force in the world. 00:07:24.74\00:07:28.14 The bishop of Rome now is fated everywhere he goes, 00:07:28.18\00:07:30.45 even in once Abraham Lincoln Protestant America. 00:07:30.48\00:07:35.22 So that part of it had happened, 00:07:35.25\00:07:36.95 but what we expect from our reading of prophecy, 00:07:36.99\00:07:41.79 Revelation 13 in particular, is that the lamb like beast 00:07:41.82\00:07:46.33 identified with the United States, 00:07:46.36\00:07:48.00 a somewhat benign appearing political entity 00:07:48.03\00:07:51.87 will function as rounded during the Middle Ages. 00:07:51.90\00:07:56.87 But it will be benign. 00:07:56.91\00:08:00.31 It will appear to be benign as it is now. 00:08:00.34\00:08:01.84 Well, doesn't it shift? 00:08:01.88\00:08:04.28 And how did Rome function? 00:08:04.31\00:08:07.35 It forced its religious view through its edicts 00:08:07.38\00:08:11.85 and in association with government power. 00:08:11.89\00:08:14.86 And so I think we can see 00:08:14.89\00:08:16.93 the beginnings of that in the United States. 00:08:16.96\00:08:19.19 It's spattered in and out through its history. 00:08:19.23\00:08:21.76 But at the moment, 00:08:21.80\00:08:23.23 there's this sense of great threat 00:08:23.26\00:08:24.60 from other religions and other forces. 00:08:24.63\00:08:26.94 There's this incredible alliance 00:08:26.97\00:08:28.54 with the politically active religious group who, 00:08:28.57\00:08:33.98 you know, you read their material, 00:08:34.01\00:08:35.34 they're just hungering to have legislation 00:08:35.38\00:08:37.95 to support their particular view, 00:08:37.98\00:08:40.12 their religious entitlement. 00:08:40.15\00:08:41.92 So I think it's upon us. 00:08:41.95\00:08:43.28 Yeah, I've lived here long enough 00:08:43.32\00:08:45.52 to see the rise of the moral majority. 00:08:45.55\00:08:47.79 Yeah, in the '70s. In the '70s and '80s. 00:08:47.82\00:08:51.59 Well, and beyond, but it began in the '70s. 00:08:51.63\00:08:52.96 And beyond that. 00:08:52.99\00:08:54.33 And then you have certain religious groups 00:08:54.36\00:08:57.57 who will claim, on the one hand, 00:08:57.60\00:08:59.93 that there should be a separation 00:08:59.97\00:09:01.47 of church and state, 00:09:01.50\00:09:03.54 but there is an unholy alliance 00:09:03.57\00:09:06.24 where my politics determines 00:09:06.27\00:09:11.75 my theology or what I believe. 00:09:11.78\00:09:14.98 And the divide between certain... 00:09:15.02\00:09:20.46 I don't want to use the term, 00:09:20.49\00:09:21.82 but certain elements within Christianity 00:09:21.86\00:09:24.73 that are lobbying 00:09:24.76\00:09:27.83 and trying to influence the narrative, 00:09:27.86\00:09:31.50 as it were, as to what is acceptable, 00:09:31.53\00:09:34.64 what is not acceptable, 00:09:34.67\00:09:36.87 this unholy alliances as I will call it. 00:09:36.91\00:09:39.67 And if you're a person outside, 00:09:39.71\00:09:41.98 if you're if you're a Muslim 00:09:42.01\00:09:43.51 or if you're some other faith or religion, 00:09:43.55\00:09:46.55 what you believe is being demeaned 00:09:46.58\00:09:48.88 and even pushed to the side for political reasons. 00:09:48.92\00:09:52.25 The most troubling thing about it is it's not only 00:09:52.29\00:09:53.96 against the Bible, 00:09:53.99\00:09:55.59 from a Christian point of view, 00:09:55.62\00:09:57.26 it's really against the stated principles 00:09:57.29\00:09:59.33 of the United States, the founding principles. 00:09:59.36\00:10:00.76 Right, separation of church and state. 00:10:00.80\00:10:02.13 So everything is being imploded to this religious agenda. 00:10:02.16\00:10:08.20 Exactly. 00:10:08.24\00:10:09.57 So where do you think it's about to go? 00:10:09.60\00:10:10.94 What's about to happen? 00:10:10.97\00:10:12.31 We leave old England, and the mother country... 00:10:12.34\00:10:14.34 Well, let's leave that alone. 00:10:14.38\00:10:16.18 In few seconds ahead, just give your succinct... 00:10:16.21\00:10:19.25 Churchill said this in 1948, 00:10:19.28\00:10:21.72 "Those who forget the lessons of the past are doomed 00:10:21.75\00:10:27.22 to repeat it sometime in the future." 00:10:27.26\00:10:30.36 And that's very dangerous when you consider that 00:10:30.39\00:10:33.93 we are now seeing this come to pass, 00:10:33.96\00:10:36.87 maybe we have not learned as much as we should, 00:10:36.90\00:10:39.60 and it's a dangerous cause. 00:10:39.63\00:10:41.80 And I think we need to really make sure 00:10:41.84\00:10:45.37 that we do what we can with the time we have. 00:10:45.41\00:10:49.94 When I was barely out of my teens, 00:10:49.98\00:10:52.28 I came under the powerful influence 00:10:52.31\00:10:54.42 of Handel's Messiah. 00:10:54.45\00:10:56.35 I listened to it over and over again. 00:10:56.38\00:10:58.32 And those words taken, of course, 00:10:58.35\00:11:00.09 from the biblical narrative are powerful, 00:11:00.12\00:11:02.42 where it talks about Jesus, a Man of sorrows 00:11:02.46\00:11:05.56 and acquainted with grief. 00:11:05.59\00:11:07.06 And then it says 00:11:07.10\00:11:08.43 that He gave His back to the smiter. 00:11:08.46\00:11:11.23 With that divine example, 00:11:11.27\00:11:13.67 I think it puts into a little perspective 00:11:13.70\00:11:16.10 the horrors of our human existence in human history. 00:11:16.14\00:11:20.04 The slavery 00:11:20.08\00:11:21.41 that was even done in the name of Christianity 00:11:21.44\00:11:24.65 at times, 00:11:24.68\00:11:26.01 the abuses and the conquest and the murders, 00:11:26.05\00:11:28.52 all of that is horrible but I believe fades 00:11:28.55\00:11:31.95 into at least its proper perspective 00:11:31.99\00:11:34.76 when we think of the divine sacrifice, 00:11:34.79\00:11:37.53 the willingness of heaven to share in our suffering 00:11:37.56\00:11:40.86 and at the same time to offer liberty 00:11:40.90\00:11:43.63 and freedom beyond these constraints. 00:11:43.67\00:11:47.77 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:11:47.80\00:11:50.81
