Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:27.22\00:00:28.92 This is the program bringing you news, views, 00:00:28.96\00:00:31.63 discussion, analysis, and up-to-date information 00:00:31.66\00:00:34.16 on religious liberty in the US and around the world. 00:00:34.20\00:00:38.10 My name is Lincoln Steed, 00:00:38.13\00:00:39.87 and I'm editor of Liberty Magazine 00:00:39.90\00:00:42.70 and the host of this program. 00:00:42.74\00:00:44.74 And my guest on this program is Kingsley Palmer. 00:00:44.77\00:00:47.41 Welcome, Kingsley. Thank you. 00:00:47.44\00:00:48.78 And for the viewers' information, 00:00:48.81\00:00:52.18 you're Religious Liberty Director 00:00:52.21\00:00:54.32 for the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Arizona. 00:00:54.35\00:00:57.15 That's correct. In the US. 00:00:57.19\00:00:58.52 That's right. 00:00:58.55\00:00:59.89 So let's start from that point of view. 00:00:59.92\00:01:04.13 Some of our viewers may not even know 00:01:04.16\00:01:05.63 even after hearing me 00:01:05.66\00:01:07.00 go on and on about religious liberty 00:01:07.03\00:01:08.40 that within our context, 00:01:08.43\00:01:10.67 we combine what we call public affairs 00:01:10.70\00:01:13.64 and religious liberty. 00:01:13.67\00:01:15.00 Right. 00:01:15.04\00:01:16.37 That's... 00:01:16.40\00:01:17.74 Explain that, how do you see the difference 00:01:17.77\00:01:19.11 or the conjunction of those two aspects? 00:01:19.14\00:01:22.28 Well, when we talk about public affairs, 00:01:22.31\00:01:24.65 we're talking about having an interest 00:01:24.68\00:01:27.58 in the community 00:01:27.62\00:01:28.95 with respect to freedom of expression of religion, 00:01:28.98\00:01:33.76 and what that looks like 00:01:33.79\00:01:35.32 in terms of how we, as a church, 00:01:35.36\00:01:39.53 you know, engage in the public discourse 00:01:39.56\00:01:43.47 on religious liberty freedoms. 00:01:43.50\00:01:46.67 And so when we talk about public affairs, 00:01:46.70\00:01:49.10 we're talking about engagement, 00:01:49.14\00:01:50.74 we're talking about involvement, 00:01:50.77\00:01:52.77 you know, with the remit to make sure 00:01:52.81\00:01:55.61 that we have a balanced view 00:01:55.64\00:02:00.18 and application of how 00:02:00.22\00:02:02.02 religious public affairs should work. 00:02:02.05\00:02:04.32 So public affairs, as the name says, it's public, 00:02:04.35\00:02:07.89 it's outreach with the concept of religious liberty. 00:02:07.92\00:02:10.59 I think it's a little bit more than that 00:02:10.63\00:02:12.43 or on a different angle. 00:02:12.46\00:02:14.03 I think it intersects also with public relations 00:02:14.06\00:02:18.83 for the church 00:02:18.87\00:02:20.80 which you would expect any group, 00:02:20.84\00:02:23.71 let alone the church to do. 00:02:23.74\00:02:26.17 But I think it works very well 00:02:26.21\00:02:27.58 when you combine the religious liberty emphasis 00:02:27.61\00:02:30.95 with this outreach, 00:02:30.98\00:02:32.88 this public relations on behalf of this particular subset 00:02:32.91\00:02:36.25 of Christianity Seventh-day Adventistism. 00:02:36.28\00:02:37.82 Right. Yes, I totally agree. 00:02:37.85\00:02:40.46 And I think the prime example of that was Jesus, okay? 00:02:40.49\00:02:45.39 Elaborate in the Bible, right? 00:02:45.43\00:02:46.76 He was very much... 00:02:46.80\00:02:48.13 Yes, in the Bible, Jesus spent most of His time engaging, 00:02:48.16\00:02:51.90 building relationships, connections with people 00:02:51.93\00:02:54.40 of all different shapes, and sizes, 00:02:54.44\00:02:56.67 and different persuasions. 00:02:56.71\00:02:59.77 And most of His time was spent doing that. 00:02:59.81\00:03:04.55 And He really, 00:03:04.58\00:03:06.08 I think, was the best example of engaging people, 00:03:06.11\00:03:10.22 meeting their needs as He did, 00:03:10.25\00:03:13.66 and also at the same time, 00:03:13.69\00:03:16.32 giving counsel, representing His Father 00:03:16.36\00:03:18.96 who's in heaven, 00:03:18.99\00:03:20.36 and also just sort of being out there 00:03:20.40\00:03:25.40 showing the character of God. 00:03:25.43\00:03:26.84 No, I think few words will take it, 00:03:26.87\00:03:28.20 you know, anyone that reads the Bible carefully, 00:03:28.24\00:03:30.21 it will be a little troubled, 00:03:30.24\00:03:31.91 as Jesus disciples were 00:03:31.94\00:03:33.38 when He made some curious statements 00:03:33.41\00:03:36.44 about the non Jews that were in contact with Him, 00:03:36.48\00:03:40.52 remember, you know? 00:03:40.55\00:03:42.45 He gave the idea that the woman... 00:03:42.48\00:03:45.22 What it is? 00:03:45.25\00:03:46.59 The tension, you know, what have I got to do with you, 00:03:46.62\00:03:48.22 you know, I've come just to the Jews. 00:03:48.26\00:03:50.79 She said something to the effect 00:03:50.83\00:03:52.29 if willing even the crumbs fall off the table. 00:03:52.33\00:03:54.36 Yes, as definition would. 00:03:54.40\00:03:55.73 Yeah. 00:03:55.76\00:03:57.57 So yes, I think there's no question 00:03:57.60\00:03:59.80 in the Bible account of Jesus 00:03:59.83\00:04:02.10 for theological reasons. 00:04:02.14\00:04:03.47 He was to come particularly to Israel to stir them 00:04:03.51\00:04:06.34 in their ministry. 00:04:06.37\00:04:07.71 But their ministry that He was encouraging them 00:04:07.74\00:04:09.81 on clearly was to change the world. 00:04:09.84\00:04:14.02 They'd forgotten that they, 00:04:14.05\00:04:15.78 you know, they were very self contained. 00:04:15.82\00:04:17.95 And so we do take a cue from Jesus that, 00:04:17.99\00:04:22.02 you know, He had a concern for humanity. 00:04:22.06\00:04:23.86 That was His mission. 00:04:23.89\00:04:25.23 And we have to exemplify that showing heaven's concern. 00:04:25.26\00:04:29.73 So in my understanding, 00:04:29.76\00:04:33.03 while we do have public relations, 00:04:33.07\00:04:34.84 it should not be self serving to promote ourselves 00:04:34.87\00:04:38.71 as us as individuals or even our structure. 00:04:38.74\00:04:42.01 It's what we represent. 00:04:42.04\00:04:43.38 We're promoting that 00:04:43.41\00:04:44.85 and explaining it rather than just doing it. 00:04:44.88\00:04:49.42 Right, we're explaining it. 00:04:49.45\00:04:50.79 And like I said, it is the engagement part. 00:04:50.82\00:04:56.12 We have to be very careful because Israel or the Jews, 00:04:56.16\00:05:00.03 who Jesus was dealing with at that particular time 00:05:00.06\00:05:03.77 almost became insulated. 00:05:03.80\00:05:05.40 It was as if, "We are the special people, 00:05:05.43\00:05:07.47 we have special favor," 00:05:07.50\00:05:09.20 and therefore anything outside of that context... 00:05:09.24\00:05:11.81 Well, that's what I was hinting at, yeah. 00:05:11.84\00:05:13.17 Yes. And that wasn't the design. 00:05:13.21\00:05:15.11 And so God was correcting the people 00:05:15.14\00:05:18.18 that have been charged with being a holy nation 00:05:18.21\00:05:20.62 and a priestly nation to administer good things 00:05:20.65\00:05:24.09 to the rest of the world. 00:05:24.12\00:05:25.45 Right. 00:05:25.49\00:05:26.82 And Adventism, Christianity, in the largest sense, 00:05:26.86\00:05:30.43 that it has no reason to be 00:05:30.46\00:05:33.23 unless it's doing the same thing, 00:05:33.26\00:05:34.60 reaching out, and being a light, 00:05:34.63\00:05:37.27 being a positive influence in the world. 00:05:37.30\00:05:39.33 Now in the modern world, 00:05:39.37\00:05:40.90 you know, we have to recognize 00:05:40.94\00:05:42.27 there are Buddhists and Hindus, and atheists of all stripes. 00:05:42.30\00:05:47.48 You know, we're not the only game in town, 00:05:47.51\00:05:49.31 but still in relating to all of those, 00:05:49.34\00:05:51.48 we can fulfill the same function, 00:05:51.51\00:05:53.18 can't we of working for their good. 00:05:53.21\00:05:56.72 And on religious liberty, 00:05:56.75\00:05:58.09 of course, we empower them in their belief, 00:05:58.12\00:06:01.92 and argue on their behalf. 00:06:01.96\00:06:03.93 And if necessary, 00:06:03.96\00:06:05.29 suffer consequence in our defense of their faith, 00:06:05.33\00:06:08.23 that very few Adventists, 00:06:08.26\00:06:11.07 for example, in our own company quite understand this. 00:06:11.10\00:06:13.67 Yes. 00:06:13.70\00:06:15.04 And I think, just as the people in the day 00:06:15.07\00:06:18.01 when Jesus was alive, had lost focus, 00:06:18.04\00:06:21.38 lost their understanding 00:06:21.41\00:06:22.94 of representing the character of God, 00:06:22.98\00:06:25.88 which is what Jesus embodied, and touching people, 00:06:25.91\00:06:30.72 meeting them where they were irrespective... 00:06:30.75\00:06:33.69 You used the example of this Syrophoenician woman, 00:06:33.72\00:06:36.93 the Roman centurion, for example, 00:06:36.96\00:06:39.43 you know, who Jesus says, listen. 00:06:39.46\00:06:42.00 He says, "You don't need to come to My house, 00:06:42.03\00:06:45.67 just speak the word." 00:06:45.70\00:06:47.10 So He was civically engaged 00:06:47.14\00:06:50.11 in putting the faith of God, the human faith. 00:06:50.14\00:06:51.64 Roman sent that 00:06:51.67\00:06:53.01 because Jews wouldn't go to his house. 00:06:53.04\00:06:54.38 Well, of course, they wouldn't. 00:06:54.41\00:06:55.74 And that was part of the problem. 00:06:55.78\00:06:57.11 Yeah. 00:06:57.15\00:06:58.48 They had become very compartmentalized 00:06:58.51\00:06:59.85 in terms of their religion. 00:06:59.88\00:07:01.95 And unfortunately, 00:07:01.98\00:07:04.75 were looked upon not very favorably 00:07:04.79\00:07:07.52 by everybody else, you know. 00:07:07.56\00:07:10.19 There was a statement made by some... 00:07:10.23\00:07:12.46 I think it was a Roman historian 00:07:12.49\00:07:14.03 or some public figure of that era 00:07:14.06\00:07:18.07 that no group were more distinguished by their, 00:07:18.10\00:07:24.97 for their despise... 00:07:25.01\00:07:26.34 For so despising the ancient Gods as the Jews. 00:07:26.37\00:07:30.85 Now, on one level, great. 00:07:30.88\00:07:32.88 You know, they knew the true God. 00:07:32.91\00:07:34.95 But I don't think it's good psychology 00:07:34.98\00:07:38.29 and ultimately good for any human being 00:07:38.32\00:07:41.06 for one group to look down on what the others stand for 00:07:41.09\00:07:44.49 or what they believe. 00:07:44.53\00:07:45.86 No. 00:07:45.89\00:07:47.23 And we can't afford to do that. 00:07:47.26\00:07:48.60 There are real differences. 00:07:48.63\00:07:50.13 And I don't know about you, 00:07:50.17\00:07:51.50 but I love debating with other faiths 00:07:51.53\00:07:54.40 and other viewpoints 00:07:54.44\00:07:56.37 because you learn a lot from it. 00:07:56.40\00:07:57.74 And plus you sort of extract their view, 00:07:57.77\00:07:59.11 and I can challenge them. 00:07:59.14\00:08:00.64 But that doesn't mean that I question should... 00:08:00.68\00:08:03.65 And I hope I don't, question for one minute. 00:08:03.68\00:08:06.25 They're right unnecessarily in believing something 00:08:06.28\00:08:08.48 that I find maybe even crazy. 00:08:08.52\00:08:12.35 Well, when we think about... 00:08:12.39\00:08:13.79 You have to respect that. 00:08:13.82\00:08:15.16 You look at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:08:15.19\00:08:16.52 it comprises of multitudes of people 00:08:16.56\00:08:20.40 coming from different economic, cultural. 00:08:20.43\00:08:22.66 How many are we in the world now? 00:08:22.70\00:08:24.27 It's something like 20 million. Twenty million. 00:08:24.30\00:08:26.43 And that's 20 million viewpoints, 00:08:26.47\00:08:28.30 that's 20 million attitudes, 00:08:28.34\00:08:30.14 that's 20 million different experiences 00:08:30.17\00:08:33.81 coming together under the banner of a truth. 00:08:33.84\00:08:36.61 And they bring that experience to the table. 00:08:36.64\00:08:39.78 So we have to be very pragmatic, 00:08:39.81\00:08:42.48 we have to be open-minded in how we approach. 00:08:42.52\00:08:46.12 I think we have common beliefs 00:08:46.15\00:08:48.42 as any other religious organization would have, 00:08:48.46\00:08:51.49 but then those beliefs are codified 00:08:51.53\00:08:54.63 in a group of policies or biblical principles 00:08:54.66\00:09:00.14 that hold us together, but at the same time, 00:09:00.17\00:09:02.67 allows for a diversity of thought, 00:09:02.70\00:09:05.14 diversity of practice. 00:09:05.17\00:09:06.88 But not just within our church. 00:09:06.91\00:09:08.24 We have to allow for... No, from outside, outside. 00:09:08.28\00:09:11.01 Definitely. 00:09:11.05\00:09:12.38 And I think part of allowing is to be open to dialoguing 00:09:12.41\00:09:16.18 and comprehending to some degree of the beliefs. 00:09:16.22\00:09:21.16 And human things generally, I think, in the modern era, 00:09:21.19\00:09:24.29 are even more lacking of that than they used to be. 00:09:24.33\00:09:27.20 They have a saying in Britain, and it goes like this. 00:09:27.23\00:09:30.67 "Mind's a likely..." Where you grew up, right? 00:09:30.70\00:09:32.33 Where I grew up. 00:09:32.37\00:09:33.70 Your accent's betraying you. 00:09:33.74\00:09:35.07 Well, of course, I'm not hiding it. 00:09:35.10\00:09:37.31 Minds are like umbrellas, 00:09:37.34\00:09:38.91 not much good unless they're open. 00:09:38.94\00:09:40.91 Yeah, that's a good one. 00:09:40.94\00:09:42.28 And we have to be very careful 00:09:42.31\00:09:44.15 that we don't keep the umbrella closed. 00:09:44.18\00:09:46.21 But we broaden our thinking, 00:09:46.25\00:09:51.05 strong in principles that we believe in, 00:09:51.09\00:09:54.19 but at the same time, 00:09:54.22\00:09:55.56 you can't get to know someone 00:09:55.59\00:09:56.93 unless you spend time with them. 00:09:56.96\00:09:58.29 Right. 00:09:58.33\00:09:59.66 Well, you know, 00:09:59.69\00:10:01.03 just on something that's going on right now, 00:10:01.06\00:10:02.40 since 9/11, at least, 00:10:02.43\00:10:04.10 the US and I think the larger Western world, 00:10:04.13\00:10:07.10 particularly is suddenly trying to discover about Islam. 00:10:07.14\00:10:14.08 But very seldom though I come across people 00:10:14.11\00:10:16.34 that have read the Quran. 00:10:16.38\00:10:19.81 Well, I think 00:10:19.85\00:10:21.58 not necessarily read and studied, 00:10:21.62\00:10:23.25 but I think we should be somewhat familiar 00:10:23.28\00:10:25.29 with other systems. 00:10:25.32\00:10:26.96 But primarily, before we even do that, 00:10:26.99\00:10:29.62 we should read our own. 00:10:29.66\00:10:31.73 When you have someone that hasn't read the Bible, 00:10:31.76\00:10:34.20 hasn't read the Quran, 00:10:34.23\00:10:35.66 what sort of a discussion could you have? 00:10:35.70\00:10:40.84 Even with good intentions 00:10:40.87\00:10:42.20 that easily goes towards sort of polemical or partisan 00:10:42.24\00:10:46.54 backwards and forwards, and nobody's helped by it. 00:10:46.57\00:10:48.44 And we've seen that. 00:10:48.48\00:10:49.98 We have seen the ostracizing, we have seen the dehumanizing, 00:10:50.01\00:10:55.12 the politicizing of principles 00:10:55.15\00:10:58.15 that we believe in 00:10:58.19\00:10:59.52 because we do not engage to find that other person's... 00:10:59.55\00:11:04.29 To listen to that person's story. 00:11:04.33\00:11:05.79 And, you know, in engagement, 00:11:05.83\00:11:07.23 you might not find encouraging information 00:11:07.26\00:11:11.63 from the other side, but it'll be correct. 00:11:11.67\00:11:14.20 You know, a lot of the dialogue that's going on now, 00:11:14.24\00:11:16.71 I think, as I said, very often from people 00:11:16.74\00:11:18.97 that are not truly informed, but it's dialogue, at least. 00:11:19.01\00:11:21.84 It's designed to sort of create a neutral commonality. 00:11:21.88\00:11:28.15 And so uncomfortable facts 00:11:28.18\00:11:30.39 about beliefs or ideals of a group, 00:11:30.42\00:11:32.99 religious or otherwise are ignored, 00:11:33.02\00:11:35.32 and then the commonality 00:11:35.36\00:11:36.69 and then everything's hunky-dory. 00:11:36.73\00:11:39.23 But I think in religious liberty, 00:11:39.26\00:11:41.10 that's not necessary. 00:11:41.13\00:11:43.50 Once you have an upfront acceptance 00:11:43.53\00:11:45.33 that we're all creatures of Creator God. 00:11:45.37\00:11:49.04 And the US Constitution 00:11:49.07\00:11:50.41 in its own pseudo pagan way recognizes that, 00:11:50.44\00:11:53.48 you know, nature and nature's God. 00:11:53.51\00:11:58.35 But once you accept that, 00:11:58.38\00:12:00.75 then there should be a charity toward the other person. 00:12:00.78\00:12:04.95 And that charity would mean 00:12:04.99\00:12:06.49 when you discover that their views are radically, 00:12:06.52\00:12:09.36 not so much opposed, 00:12:09.39\00:12:10.73 but radically different from yours, 00:12:10.76\00:12:12.53 then that's what it is. 00:12:12.56\00:12:14.20 It's not necessarily 00:12:14.23\00:12:15.56 that they not be radically different for you 00:12:15.60\00:12:17.07 to be agreeable with them. 00:12:17.10\00:12:18.43 Right. 00:12:18.47\00:12:19.80 And I think, if you can find the commonalities, 00:12:19.83\00:12:23.34 you know, you should have a definite interest that 00:12:23.37\00:12:26.88 in engaging in that person. 00:12:26.91\00:12:28.84 As I said before, you want to listen to them. 00:12:28.88\00:12:31.01 And you also want to learn. 00:12:31.05\00:12:32.88 You lose nothing by learning, you lose nothing by listening. 00:12:32.91\00:12:37.55 Well, you gain a lot more, you know, I suppose. 00:12:37.59\00:12:38.92 Well, you do. 00:12:38.95\00:12:40.29 And I mean, it's got to be interactive. 00:12:40.32\00:12:41.66 That's why I believe Jesus epitomizes 00:12:41.69\00:12:45.29 that in terms of listening to the stories. 00:12:45.33\00:12:48.33 He listened to the Syrophoenician woman, 00:12:48.36\00:12:50.17 He listened to the woman at the well, 00:12:50.20\00:12:52.17 He listened to the Roman centurion, 00:12:52.20\00:12:54.50 He did a lot of listening, and His responses were, 00:12:54.54\00:12:58.41 "Well, I do represent God as the Father. 00:12:58.44\00:13:02.14 I am His son. 00:13:02.18\00:13:03.51 I do represent... I am also Jewish. 00:13:03.55\00:13:06.28 But I don't mind..." 00:13:06.31\00:13:07.65 Well, He said He was the Son of God. 00:13:07.68\00:13:09.02 Most times, He said He was the Son of God. 00:13:09.05\00:13:10.39 Son of God, see it, Son of man. 00:13:10.42\00:13:11.75 So He emphasized to come in humanity. 00:13:11.79\00:13:13.12 Exactly. 00:13:13.15\00:13:14.49 He built that initial connection. 00:13:14.52\00:13:15.86 And He stepped out of the frame 00:13:15.89\00:13:18.96 or the restrictions of what we're expected of Him 00:13:18.99\00:13:22.03 in order to engage with human beings 00:13:22.06\00:13:24.40 regardless of where they came from. 00:13:24.43\00:13:25.77 Well, yeah, it's worth remembering on Christ, 00:13:25.80\00:13:27.87 the biggest attack made against Him by enemies 00:13:27.90\00:13:30.91 within His own people 00:13:30.94\00:13:32.31 were that He was the friend 00:13:32.34\00:13:34.11 and companion of sinners and publicans, 00:13:34.14\00:13:36.91 in other words, drunkards and revelers, 00:13:36.95\00:13:40.65 you know, the low life of society. 00:13:40.68\00:13:42.28 And I think they were right. 00:13:42.32\00:13:45.09 But that's that... 00:13:45.12\00:13:46.45 Not that He was one of them, 00:13:46.49\00:13:47.82 but Jesus would associate with anybody 00:13:47.86\00:13:51.33 that He could get close to 00:13:51.36\00:13:52.69 because He wanted to communicate 00:13:52.73\00:13:54.80 because of the principles of heaven. 00:13:54.83\00:13:56.80 But just as a human being, I think He wanted to connect. 00:13:56.83\00:13:59.73 You know, I also... 00:13:59.77\00:14:01.10 And here's the other interesting thing, 00:14:01.14\00:14:03.77 which is risky. 00:14:03.81\00:14:05.14 And that's what I love about Jesus 00:14:05.17\00:14:07.58 is the fact that He was here 00:14:07.61\00:14:10.51 to remind the people of His day, 00:14:10.55\00:14:14.12 what their true calling was, and that was to be sought. 00:14:14.15\00:14:17.52 That was to permeate. 00:14:17.55\00:14:19.59 That was to... You can't... 00:14:19.62\00:14:20.96 If salt stays in the bottle, it's no use. 00:14:20.99\00:14:23.39 So He did that. 00:14:23.43\00:14:25.26 Well, you used wonderful word, pictures, and imagery 00:14:25.29\00:14:27.40 that indicated great spiritual truth. 00:14:27.43\00:14:30.20 Stay with us. 00:14:30.23\00:14:31.57 We'll be back in a short while to continue this discussion. 00:14:31.60\00:14:35.74 Thank you. 00:14:35.77\00:14:37.11
