Welcome back to Liberty Insider. 00:00:04.17\00:00:06.40 Before the break with my guest, we were... 00:00:06.43\00:00:11.91 Well, you tell us where we were, 00:00:11.94\00:00:13.78 we've gone up hill and down dale, 00:00:13.81\00:00:15.28 but from the point of view of the early Christian church, 00:00:15.31\00:00:18.81 and, of course, 00:00:18.85\00:00:20.18 how religious liberty and the individual relates 00:00:20.22\00:00:22.12 to some of those developments. 00:00:22.15\00:00:23.49 Well, showing how we go from Christianity 00:00:23.52\00:00:27.06 trying to be ignored, 00:00:27.09\00:00:28.42 so that they can have their freedom... 00:00:28.46\00:00:29.79 Yeah, I love that point. 00:00:29.82\00:00:31.16 To Christianity trying to cooperate 00:00:31.19\00:00:33.83 and be a part of the system in the public sphere 00:00:33.86\00:00:37.87 to where by the time you get 00:00:37.90\00:00:39.30 to Justinian's Christian Empire, 00:00:39.33\00:00:42.10 Rome has become Christianity. 00:00:42.14\00:00:44.64 Christianity has become Rome. 00:00:44.67\00:00:46.91 And, of course, 00:00:46.94\00:00:48.28 Christianity changed more than Rome did. 00:00:48.31\00:00:50.15 And so you end up with a state 00:00:50.18\00:00:53.01 that is claiming universal authority 00:00:53.05\00:00:56.72 based on God's will, 00:00:56.75\00:00:59.12 and then enforceable 00:00:59.15\00:01:01.22 because it was based on God's will. 00:01:01.26\00:01:03.12 And religious freedom 00:01:03.16\00:01:05.76 was not part of that economy. 00:01:05.79\00:01:09.46 And, you know, we had a little discussion 00:01:09.50\00:01:11.30 about empires and, of course, 00:01:11.33\00:01:14.37 the United States has been called 00:01:14.40\00:01:16.10 a modern empire. 00:01:16.14\00:01:17.47 But in what regard do you think that it radically differs 00:01:17.51\00:01:20.78 from Christianity under the Roman Empire, 00:01:20.81\00:01:23.61 which merged into one and the same? 00:01:23.65\00:01:26.05 Well, ironically, 00:01:26.08\00:01:28.42 the United States develops as a nation first. 00:01:28.45\00:01:32.69 And the envelopment of being a Christian nation 00:01:32.72\00:01:37.69 is actually an undercurrent and throughout time, 00:01:37.73\00:01:42.43 but it's always an undercurrent. 00:01:42.46\00:01:44.90 The big thing is freedom. 00:01:44.93\00:01:46.87 And so freedom and religious freedom 00:01:46.90\00:01:49.00 go hand in hand. 00:01:49.04\00:01:50.37 So America, United States, 00:01:50.41\00:01:53.38 is intending to provide religious freedom 00:01:53.41\00:01:56.18 over and against that which was not religious freedom 00:01:56.21\00:01:59.65 in the European nations. 00:01:59.68\00:02:01.68 And so it has a complete different history. 00:02:01.72\00:02:05.95 Christianity was not developed 00:02:05.99\00:02:07.72 in order to create religious freedom, 00:02:07.76\00:02:09.99 Christianity was not created, 00:02:10.03\00:02:11.53 not developed as a nation, it became an empire. 00:02:11.56\00:02:15.66 But that's not what it started as 00:02:15.70\00:02:17.67 nor what it required. 00:02:17.70\00:02:19.27 I thought long and hard why has the American experience 00:02:19.30\00:02:23.71 been so different from the old world? 00:02:23.74\00:02:27.58 Because religion played a huge role 00:02:27.61\00:02:29.78 in the different settlements in this government. 00:02:29.81\00:02:34.45 And I don't know 00:02:34.48\00:02:35.82 that there's any definitive answer. 00:02:35.85\00:02:37.19 I think one key thing that is... 00:02:37.22\00:02:38.82 I've just not read about it much. 00:02:38.85\00:02:41.12 But the Church of England, 00:02:41.16\00:02:42.49 which was the established Church of England, 00:02:42.52\00:02:46.03 and was strong in the United States, 00:02:46.06\00:02:48.56 of course, backed the crown in the War of Independence. 00:02:48.60\00:02:53.23 And, so America began its national life as a republic 00:02:53.27\00:02:57.84 with the most important church 00:02:57.87\00:03:00.14 discredited and seen as the ultimate other. 00:03:00.18\00:03:04.08 And even to this day, 00:03:04.11\00:03:05.45 it's why it's called the Episcopal Church 00:03:05.48\00:03:06.82 in the other states. 00:03:06.85\00:03:08.18 It doesn't sort of fly very well, 00:03:08.22\00:03:09.72 Anglican or Church of England. 00:03:09.75\00:03:11.65 And so the back was broken, 00:03:11.69\00:03:13.42 you know, established not so much. 00:03:13.46\00:03:15.92 Well, it was an established 00:03:15.96\00:03:17.29 but a politically powerful church. 00:03:17.33\00:03:19.86 And what was left was a patchwork quilt. 00:03:19.89\00:03:22.96 And when I look at the American history that way, 00:03:23.00\00:03:25.17 it seems to me it's had in very small microcosm, 00:03:25.20\00:03:28.54 all of the problems of the old world 00:03:28.57\00:03:31.07 but so balkanized on such a smaller level 00:03:31.11\00:03:34.11 that it really didn't affect the whole the same way. 00:03:34.14\00:03:37.31 And the nation develops as disparate groups 00:03:37.35\00:03:42.55 trying to hold on to the things they shared. 00:03:42.58\00:03:46.86 And that's a very big difference 00:03:46.89\00:03:49.52 between that and Christianity. 00:03:49.56\00:03:50.89 Well, the infusion of the whole enlightenment concept 00:03:50.93\00:03:53.80 of Maryland Independence, 00:03:53.83\00:03:56.77 and we're autonomous beings and so on. 00:03:56.80\00:04:01.54 It's a horrible admission to make as a Christian, 00:04:01.57\00:04:03.57 but I think, given that Christianity 00:04:03.61\00:04:06.57 with the Roman Empire devolved to such a level, 00:04:06.61\00:04:09.64 we needed this infusion of secular self determination 00:04:09.68\00:04:12.65 to sort of break the spell, 00:04:12.68\00:04:14.05 even though godless self determination 00:04:14.08\00:04:16.85 is what Satan was pushing in the garden. 00:04:16.89\00:04:20.42 Yes, but in some ways, 00:04:20.46\00:04:22.72 a true view of Christian freedom 00:04:22.76\00:04:27.10 is actually reflected in that humanistic feeling. 00:04:27.13\00:04:30.37 Oh, yeah, it almost inadvertently. 00:04:30.40\00:04:32.40 You're right, nature and nature is God. 00:04:32.43\00:04:34.07 Right. 00:04:34.10\00:04:35.44 So you end up with the religious dynamic, 00:04:35.47\00:04:38.24 even though there are some of them trying 00:04:38.27\00:04:39.84 to completely get rid of that religious dynamic. 00:04:39.87\00:04:42.08 Well, even as you say that, 00:04:42.11\00:04:43.85 I'm thinking about Lord Byron and his Manfred poem, 00:04:43.88\00:04:49.25 he says in Rome, you know, he did not... 00:04:49.28\00:04:51.55 He looked in the ruins and all the rest, he says, 00:04:51.59\00:04:53.52 and until the whole thing became religion. 00:04:53.56\00:04:57.03 So secularism almost taken to the limit 00:04:57.06\00:04:59.53 becomes a religion. 00:04:59.56\00:05:00.90 I don't really buy into the idea 00:05:00.93\00:05:02.70 that is often said that that secularism in the US 00:05:02.73\00:05:06.67 should be managed and recognized as a religion. 00:05:06.70\00:05:09.37 I don't think that's quite right, 00:05:09.40\00:05:11.07 it makes no claims that way, 00:05:11.11\00:05:12.44 even if people behave toward a secular agenda 00:05:12.47\00:05:16.18 like a religious person. 00:05:16.21\00:05:17.55 But why is it treated that way here? 00:05:17.58\00:05:20.18 Because it's viewed as a tribe, 00:05:20.22\00:05:22.92 and tribes have religious autonomy. 00:05:22.95\00:05:25.55 Yeah. 00:05:25.59\00:05:26.92 And they're protecting their religious views, 00:05:26.96\00:05:28.82 and even those that are anti-religious, 00:05:28.86\00:05:31.73 that is viewed by the larger group 00:05:31.76\00:05:33.63 as a religious viewpoint... 00:05:33.66\00:05:35.33 Yeah, well, in that regard, yes. 00:05:35.36\00:05:36.70 Because of tribalism. 00:05:36.73\00:05:38.07 Yeah, yeah, yeah. 00:05:38.10\00:05:39.43 So, you know, again, this is a moveable feast, 00:05:39.47\00:05:42.97 and it's interesting to discuss in the US 00:05:43.00\00:05:46.57 how old these ancient influences 00:05:46.61\00:05:49.31 came together 00:05:49.34\00:05:50.68 and yet to really truly enable religious liberty 00:05:50.71\00:05:54.32 at the best times. 00:05:54.35\00:05:56.69 But as always an aspirational view 00:05:56.72\00:05:59.75 that wasn't shared in previous ages. 00:05:59.79\00:06:02.72 And I can't remember Rome ever did some good things, 00:06:02.76\00:06:06.83 but it never made these grand statements of 00:06:06.86\00:06:08.76 all men are free and all of these, 00:06:08.80\00:06:10.20 quite the contrary. 00:06:10.23\00:06:11.57 As the new world was settled in, 00:06:11.60\00:06:13.30 the pope determined at one point, 00:06:13.34\00:06:15.17 they're not even human beings. 00:06:15.20\00:06:18.21 So the US, 00:06:18.24\00:06:19.57 I think, has fulfilled a wonderfully enabling role 00:06:19.61\00:06:22.38 of holding up a great ideal, 00:06:22.41\00:06:24.51 not always living up to it, but it's an ideal 00:06:24.55\00:06:27.12 that facilitated religious freedom 00:06:27.15\00:06:29.85 and civil liberties in a way that 00:06:29.88\00:06:32.09 that the old states 00:06:32.12\00:06:33.46 and the older religious entities 00:06:33.49\00:06:35.29 haven't been able... 00:06:35.32\00:06:36.66 Weren't able to do. 00:06:36.69\00:06:38.03 So why is it collapsing in now? 00:06:38.06\00:06:40.90 That's the question. 00:06:40.93\00:06:42.26 Viewers... 00:06:42.30\00:06:43.63 No, no, we need to discuss that. 00:06:43.67\00:06:45.23 It is collapsing in, right. 00:06:45.27\00:06:46.60 It is collapsing in, and the attitude of people is 00:06:46.63\00:06:49.70 we need freedom for me, not for you. 00:06:49.74\00:06:53.98 It's tribalism again asserting itself, 00:06:54.01\00:06:56.81 so the very thing that's causing 00:06:56.85\00:06:59.21 the great religions of the world, 00:06:59.25\00:07:00.58 Hinduism is now turning to having a Hindu state. 00:07:00.62\00:07:06.09 Many of the Islamic nations are saying 00:07:06.12\00:07:09.42 now we are going to be Islamic nations 00:07:09.46\00:07:12.36 and have Islamic law in our nations. 00:07:12.39\00:07:14.43 And there's this great pole 00:07:14.46\00:07:17.37 within the few Christian nations 00:07:17.40\00:07:20.64 that are still Christian enough to have mostly 00:07:20.67\00:07:23.04 church going Christians in them to say, 00:07:23.07\00:07:25.04 "We must become a Christian state." 00:07:25.07\00:07:27.74 Is that a loss or is that a gain? 00:07:27.78\00:07:31.48 Well, 00:07:31.51\00:07:33.28 you know, we can analyze this at great length. 00:07:33.31\00:07:35.15 What I think is going on. 00:07:35.18\00:07:37.69 Ironically, in this age of communications, 00:07:37.72\00:07:41.46 there's less personal knowledge of the different faiths 00:07:41.49\00:07:44.46 that people are subscribed to. 00:07:44.49\00:07:46.90 So they're not informed about their own faith. 00:07:46.93\00:07:49.10 And their reaction that you described 00:07:49.13\00:07:51.73 is because they perceive a threat to their identity. 00:07:51.77\00:07:55.74 This is the great thing about globalism, 00:07:55.77\00:07:59.47 is threatening to most groups. 00:07:59.51\00:08:02.54 They feel that 00:08:02.58\00:08:03.91 they'll be sort of bled away into a larger hole, 00:08:03.95\00:08:06.01 and they don't want that. 00:08:06.05\00:08:07.38 So you have a threat and then an ignorance about who you are, 00:08:07.42\00:08:10.75 and it gets toxic very quickly I think. 00:08:10.79\00:08:13.89 But what is in... 00:08:13.92\00:08:15.26 I feel the Bible says, 00:08:15.29\00:08:16.62 "My people perish for lack of knowledge." 00:08:16.66\00:08:18.13 Lack of knowledge is a pretty dangerous situation 00:08:18.16\00:08:21.66 to be in. 00:08:21.70\00:08:23.03 Yeah, especially 00:08:23.06\00:08:24.40 if you're holding on to your identity 00:08:24.43\00:08:26.43 even though you don't actually believe it anymore. 00:08:26.47\00:08:28.80 And, you know, two examples you gave, 00:08:28.84\00:08:30.24 the Hindu nationalists, 00:08:30.27\00:08:31.61 they feel threatened with some justification. 00:08:31.64\00:08:35.54 There's a large Muslim minority in India, 00:08:35.58\00:08:38.65 and they're on the border of a radical state 00:08:38.68\00:08:41.05 that's never gotten over partition. 00:08:41.08\00:08:43.08 And here are two nuclear states. 00:08:43.12\00:08:46.05 I believe before... 00:08:46.09\00:08:47.96 Very likely before the end of time, 00:08:47.99\00:08:49.49 they'll have a shot at each other. 00:08:49.52\00:08:51.03 Three times in my lifetime they've gone to war. 00:08:51.06\00:08:53.60 And then you start Islam. 00:08:53.63\00:08:56.87 The Islamic world is under threat 00:08:56.90\00:08:59.07 or at least in the Middle East. 00:08:59.10\00:09:01.74 I mean, it's an open fact that the US 00:09:01.77\00:09:05.81 some policy planners beyond given administration, 00:09:05.84\00:09:09.88 they have an agenda to remake the map there, 00:09:09.91\00:09:12.55 you know, it's basically this Sykes-Picot air 00:09:12.58\00:09:15.45 all over again. 00:09:15.48\00:09:17.22 I'm referring to the British 00:09:17.25\00:09:19.49 and the French foreign ministers 00:09:19.52\00:09:20.86 who divvied up the Middle East. 00:09:20.89\00:09:22.42 There is an inclination 00:09:22.46\00:09:26.13 sharpened by declining resources, 00:09:26.16\00:09:28.50 oil in other parts of the world to move in, 00:09:28.53\00:09:31.27 and so Islam is not totally wrong 00:09:31.30\00:09:34.30 to think that in a political sense, 00:09:34.34\00:09:35.97 at least their home base is under threat. 00:09:36.00\00:09:40.18 And religious groups that are not self assured 00:09:40.21\00:09:43.01 about what they believe in who they are, 00:09:43.04\00:09:45.61 then come under some threat, 00:09:45.65\00:09:48.72 not good. 00:09:48.75\00:09:50.09 And Christianity is not immune to this. 00:09:50.12\00:09:51.99 No, and in the context of tribalism, 00:09:52.02\00:09:54.66 the idea that we are right because we are 00:09:54.69\00:09:58.59 as opposed to 00:09:58.63\00:10:00.80 there's rational reasons or spiritual reasons 00:10:00.83\00:10:04.70 or it's God ordained reasons, 00:10:04.73\00:10:07.94 not thoughtfully thought out reasons or chosen reasons. 00:10:07.97\00:10:12.11 So you end up with we are who we are, 00:10:12.14\00:10:15.88 and we should be allowed to remain who we are 00:10:15.91\00:10:18.85 even if it means 00:10:18.88\00:10:20.22 we have to dominate everyone else to do that. 00:10:20.25\00:10:22.28 Yeah, but we do have to pray, and hope, 00:10:22.32\00:10:26.02 and work towards increasing the knowledge 00:10:26.05\00:10:28.12 and an understanding of the rights of others 00:10:28.16\00:10:30.63 that can sort of defuse this protective antagonistic element 00:10:30.66\00:10:34.66 in the world today, don't you think? 00:10:34.70\00:10:36.26 The reality is 00:10:36.30\00:10:37.63 that if I'm not willing to give freedom to somebody else, 00:10:37.67\00:10:41.44 religious freedom to somebody else, 00:10:41.47\00:10:43.07 I don't end up 00:10:43.10\00:10:44.44 with any religious freedom myself. 00:10:44.47\00:10:48.21 In one of his lectures, 00:10:48.24\00:10:49.58 CS Lewis commented on a revolutionary 00:10:49.61\00:10:53.85 that he could imagine who had murdered people, 00:10:53.88\00:10:58.05 overturned society, 00:10:58.09\00:10:59.42 done all sorts of murder and mayhem 00:10:59.45\00:11:01.09 all in the goal of establishing his idea 00:11:01.12\00:11:05.89 of a perfect society. 00:11:05.93\00:11:08.00 But in the face of God's judgment, 00:11:08.03\00:11:09.73 we recognize that it was futile. 00:11:09.76\00:11:11.93 In our day, I'm sure, 00:11:11.97\00:11:14.40 similarly, that the group like ISIS, 00:11:14.44\00:11:16.30 murderous and destructive to the limit, 00:11:16.34\00:11:20.01 if they could see as they will, 00:11:20.04\00:11:21.44 one day have as futile and murderous 00:11:21.48\00:11:24.61 that really was would be surely very disappointed. 00:11:24.65\00:11:28.68 But we need to recognize that many efforts have come and gone 00:11:28.72\00:11:31.35 to establish the kingdom of God on earth, 00:11:31.39\00:11:33.62 an ideal kingdom 00:11:33.66\00:11:35.62 that all of them are destined for failure 00:11:35.66\00:11:37.73 without recognizing 00:11:37.76\00:11:39.56 that it's in the heart of free will 00:11:39.59\00:11:42.43 the truth is established not by force, 00:11:42.46\00:11:45.03 and the God's kingdom is a spiritual reality now. 00:11:45.07\00:11:49.50 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:11:49.54\00:11:52.51
