Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:05.47\00:00:07.27 Before the break here with guest John Ashmeade. 00:00:07.30\00:00:12.01 We really had Daniel as our guest, didn't we? 00:00:12.04\00:00:14.04 Yes. 00:00:14.08\00:00:15.41 We were invoking that great hero of Bible times 00:00:15.44\00:00:18.38 but a very important time of bible history. 00:00:18.41\00:00:20.68 People forget it. 00:00:20.72\00:00:22.05 You know, Babylon is a kingdom. 00:00:22.08\00:00:23.42 That was one of the... 00:00:23.45\00:00:24.79 Well, it was the first great kingdom 00:00:24.82\00:00:26.15 in that image that Nebuchadnezzar 00:00:26.19\00:00:27.99 was shown that includes a description of only kingdoms 00:00:28.02\00:00:31.06 right down to our present convoluted weakened... 00:00:31.09\00:00:34.00 Well, it's very strong nations with iron and of clay. 00:00:34.03\00:00:36.67 So the strongest metal of the statue 00:00:36.70\00:00:39.57 mixed with the weakest, and that's the modern world. 00:00:39.60\00:00:42.17 But at the same time, his nation, 00:00:42.20\00:00:44.74 his church was in disarray. 00:00:44.77\00:00:48.44 You know, you intercede 00:00:48.48\00:00:49.81 for Adventists in the workplace, 00:00:49.84\00:00:51.75 and some of them get satisfaction 00:00:51.78\00:00:54.08 knowing they have an organization behind them, 00:00:54.12\00:00:56.18 and you and other lawyers. 00:00:56.22\00:00:58.22 That's a certain security. 00:00:58.25\00:01:00.02 Daniel didn't have that. 00:01:00.06\00:01:01.39 His nation was in captivity or living in hovels, 00:01:01.42\00:01:05.43 the ones that were left behind back in Jerusalem. 00:01:05.46\00:01:07.63 They were finished. 00:01:07.66\00:01:09.46 So his faith was directly with God, 00:01:09.50\00:01:11.27 and yet he was empowered to respectfully deal 00:01:11.30\00:01:15.24 with the potent types of the time 00:01:15.27\00:01:17.24 who had total parallel life or death over at any moment. 00:01:17.27\00:01:20.08 Right. 00:01:20.11\00:01:21.44 I mean, I think, you know, 00:01:21.48\00:01:22.91 Daniel's life is quite a testimony of faith 00:01:22.94\00:01:26.88 when you're in a circumstance 00:01:26.92\00:01:28.92 where you can believe that God has abandoned you. 00:01:28.95\00:01:31.49 I mean, you've been taken captive in a foreign land, 00:01:31.52\00:01:35.12 and you look up now, 00:01:35.16\00:01:37.39 and you're being targeted, you know? 00:01:37.43\00:01:39.59 They want you to pledge your loyalty to the nation. 00:01:39.63\00:01:43.53 That's right. 00:01:43.57\00:01:44.90 And you understand exactly, 00:01:44.93\00:01:46.27 most people don't get it out of the story. 00:01:46.30\00:01:49.40 I remember being shocked first time 00:01:49.44\00:01:50.97 a preacher mentioned it, 00:01:51.01\00:01:52.34 but the chances are, it's almost foregone fact 00:01:52.37\00:01:56.34 that he and his friends had been neutralized, 00:01:56.38\00:02:00.48 they were eunuchs 00:02:00.52\00:02:02.78 because it was common practice to take the... 00:02:02.82\00:02:06.25 Not just the brightest but the aristocracy, 00:02:06.29\00:02:09.09 the sons and daughters of the aristocracy 00:02:09.12\00:02:10.99 of the other country, 00:02:11.03\00:02:12.36 which would denature, would take away their future. 00:02:12.39\00:02:15.76 They would be made unable to breathe 00:02:15.80\00:02:17.87 because the Babylonians 00:02:17.90\00:02:19.87 didn't want them to breathe into this stuff. 00:02:19.90\00:02:21.44 They wanted what they could give, 00:02:21.47\00:02:22.94 service and an expertise. 00:02:22.97\00:02:25.47 Oh, we never hear about a Mrs. Daniel, do we? 00:02:25.51\00:02:27.28 No. 00:02:27.31\00:02:28.64 And I have no burden to make that point, 00:02:28.68\00:02:30.55 but the point is the level of disempowerment 00:02:30.58\00:02:33.21 was incredible. 00:02:33.25\00:02:34.58 He was turned into a cog 00:02:34.62\00:02:36.62 in the machinery of another nation 00:02:36.65\00:02:39.22 to serve them. 00:02:39.25\00:02:40.59 It would seem that he was being trained 00:02:40.62\00:02:41.96 to be loyal to Babylon 00:02:41.99\00:02:44.39 and to lead his people to be loyal to Babylon as well. 00:02:44.43\00:02:47.33 And, you know, we see that happening today. 00:02:47.36\00:02:49.23 I mean, you know, 00:02:49.26\00:02:50.60 the education that we receive trains us to be loyal. 00:02:50.63\00:02:53.57 You're thinking exactly like me. 00:02:53.60\00:02:54.94 Right. 00:02:54.97\00:02:56.30 People don't realize it, it's not that 00:02:56.34\00:02:57.67 we should oppose the education system, 00:02:57.71\00:02:59.04 but it's not to train people to be God 00:02:59.07\00:03:00.48 fearing citizens of heaven, 00:03:00.51\00:03:03.14 it's to be useful functionaries 00:03:03.18\00:03:05.28 of a modern day machine of industry 00:03:05.31\00:03:09.02 and all the rest 00:03:09.05\00:03:10.39 that fit into that to serve the state needs, 00:03:10.42\00:03:11.75 secular needs. 00:03:11.79\00:03:13.12 And the pull toward compromises is overwhelming, 00:03:13.15\00:03:16.26 and it's intentional. 00:03:16.29\00:03:18.66 And, you know, when you look 00:03:18.69\00:03:21.20 at the whole situation with the statue, 00:03:21.23\00:03:24.40 and bowing down, and the worship, 00:03:24.43\00:03:27.54 you know, I wonder if we are, as a country, 00:03:27.57\00:03:30.67 heading in that direction 00:03:30.71\00:03:32.31 where we are upholding these symbols of loyalty, 00:03:32.34\00:03:36.58 you know, like the flag, the national anthem, 00:03:36.61\00:03:40.05 and we are sort of demanding that everyone accept these 00:03:40.08\00:03:45.39 in the same way under the same terms. 00:03:45.42\00:03:48.76 I wonder if we're heading that way as a country 00:03:48.79\00:03:50.43 and is that dangerous. 00:03:50.46\00:03:51.83 And the Supreme Court helped us a little to fight it, 00:03:51.86\00:03:54.13 but, you know, the pledge of allegiance, 00:03:54.16\00:03:55.50 which is a fine thing. 00:03:55.53\00:03:57.80 But from the... 00:03:57.83\00:03:59.17 Was it 1950-some on, 00:03:59.20\00:04:02.20 they mixed God into the deal. 00:04:02.24\00:04:06.17 So it's the state talismans and religion, and you're... 00:04:06.21\00:04:10.68 It's all one and the same, 00:04:10.71\00:04:12.05 loyalty to this country is loyalty to God. 00:04:12.08\00:04:13.52 Well, maybe not, 00:04:13.55\00:04:14.98 but it's claiming that it is, and this is, 00:04:15.02\00:04:17.15 you know, 00:04:17.19\00:04:18.52 I've preached a number of times on the plains of Dura, 00:04:18.55\00:04:20.89 there with the statue and the fire and all those. 00:04:20.92\00:04:23.89 And Nebuchadnezzar says, "You know, 00:04:23.93\00:04:25.33 why don't you bow down 00:04:25.36\00:04:26.70 and worship my image and my Gods?" 00:04:26.73\00:04:29.53 He mixed both in. 00:04:29.56\00:04:31.10 It clearly was a status symbol and a religious symbol, 00:04:31.13\00:04:34.40 and one was the same as the other. 00:04:34.44\00:04:38.61 The state's not inclined to be religious, 00:04:38.64\00:04:40.48 but it likes to have sanctimony around, it's, 00:04:40.51\00:04:44.21 you know, the eagle and always... 00:04:44.25\00:04:46.78 We're not different from the Romans, 00:04:46.82\00:04:48.15 we parade and stand it on the... 00:04:48.18\00:04:49.58 you know, you genuflect before it. 00:04:49.62\00:04:52.15 We got to... 00:04:52.19\00:04:53.52 not so much resist but be aware of this 00:04:53.56\00:04:56.39 and keep our ultimate loyalty in mind. 00:04:56.42\00:04:58.46 You know, I think the important thing 00:04:58.49\00:05:00.50 under these circumstances, 00:05:00.53\00:05:02.16 look, you should be free if you want to engage 00:05:02.20\00:05:04.37 and embrace these ideas. 00:05:04.40\00:05:06.00 But if you choose not to go with the flow, 00:05:06.03\00:05:08.97 to run with the crowd, 00:05:09.00\00:05:11.01 that you don't suffer persecution for that, 00:05:11.04\00:05:13.78 I think that's a mature nation, a mature democracy, 00:05:13.81\00:05:17.68 where people can protest when they see the need to, 00:05:17.71\00:05:21.25 when they feel like they want to make a point 00:05:21.28\00:05:23.95 or if they just simply don't want to do it, 00:05:23.99\00:05:26.92 you know? 00:05:26.96\00:05:28.29 Yeah, I've thought about this a lot, 00:05:28.32\00:05:29.66 with necessity in this job. 00:05:29.69\00:05:32.46 That sounds good, 00:05:32.49\00:05:33.83 and the US has embraced that from the beginning. 00:05:33.86\00:05:36.46 But if you are a rational secular leader, 00:05:36.50\00:05:40.90 it's not self-evident that 00:05:40.94\00:05:42.60 that's the good of keeping a country together. 00:05:42.64\00:05:47.31 And what I think it feeds toward 00:05:47.34\00:05:49.84 which Jefferson and others saw, 00:05:49.88\00:05:51.55 Jefferson more than most, 00:05:51.58\00:05:53.35 it allows rebellion in an essence to flourish. 00:05:53.38\00:05:57.35 Jefferson just thought that was great 00:05:57.39\00:05:58.99 because you let it reveal itself 00:05:59.02\00:06:00.36 and then you stop at that now and... 00:06:00.39\00:06:02.49 But if you're really after continuing stable society, 00:06:02.52\00:06:06.46 it's not the greatest thing to allow dissidents 00:06:06.49\00:06:08.46 to develop or even what we argue 00:06:08.50\00:06:10.87 for internationally, multiple religious allegiances 00:06:10.90\00:06:13.57 because they all, at the very least, 00:06:13.60\00:06:15.84 bleed away monolithic support for the state, 00:06:15.87\00:06:18.97 which more and more people want to support. 00:06:19.01\00:06:20.98 You know, the basic protest 00:06:21.01\00:06:22.78 is sort of a check on government power. 00:06:22.81\00:06:25.81 You know, the fact that... 00:06:25.85\00:06:27.18 If you want to check government power, 00:06:27.22\00:06:28.55 no government wants to be checked. 00:06:28.58\00:06:29.92 But it's important, you know, 00:06:29.95\00:06:32.15 for people to be able to stand up 00:06:32.19\00:06:34.66 in protest and say, "No, you've gone too far, 00:06:34.69\00:06:37.16 we want to bring this to your attention. 00:06:37.19\00:06:38.66 It's time to turn back from the direction 00:06:38.69\00:06:40.36 where you're going." 00:06:40.40\00:06:41.73 And I think that's a vital part of a healthy nation. 00:06:41.76\00:06:45.83 And if we stamp that out, 00:06:45.87\00:06:47.44 if we prevent that from happening, 00:06:47.47\00:06:49.40 it's a real threat to freedom. 00:06:49.44\00:06:50.87 I agree with you. 00:06:50.91\00:06:52.24 In the philosophical sense, my point is, no government, 00:06:52.27\00:06:53.61 even a democratic government, 00:06:53.64\00:06:55.34 in the sense of those governing 00:06:55.38\00:06:56.71 and the ones in the system are happy with that, 00:06:56.75\00:06:59.08 they inherently resist it. 00:06:59.11\00:07:01.22 Oh, they do. They do. 00:07:01.25\00:07:02.58 And religion has always been a powerful dissonance 00:07:02.62\00:07:07.02 towards the systems. 00:07:07.06\00:07:08.39 Right. 00:07:08.42\00:07:09.76 I think, you know, there is always that tension 00:07:09.79\00:07:11.93 between religion and the state in the sense 00:07:11.96\00:07:14.50 that, you know, many religious people, 00:07:14.53\00:07:16.56 their first loyalty is to God and not to the state. 00:07:16.60\00:07:20.34 And so if you go in with that mindset, 00:07:20.37\00:07:23.17 you know, whenever the state enacts a law 00:07:23.20\00:07:26.01 or, you know, wants you to act in a certain way 00:07:26.04\00:07:28.48 that's certainly inconsistent with your religious practice, 00:07:28.51\00:07:32.21 then you have that tension. 00:07:32.25\00:07:34.12 And then you have that pull, 00:07:34.15\00:07:35.48 and you don't have the loyalty that the state often wants. 00:07:35.52\00:07:38.72 Back to Daniel, where do we see that tension? 00:07:38.75\00:07:42.09 Of course, it's a narrative, and not many words, 00:07:42.12\00:07:46.19 maybe there's a lot unspoken. 00:07:46.23\00:07:47.90 But there's not much. 00:07:47.93\00:07:49.26 The only time I remember 00:07:49.30\00:07:50.63 he seemed a little on it 00:07:50.67\00:07:52.93 justifiably was when the word went out to all, 00:07:52.97\00:07:55.20 the wise men would have been killed. 00:07:55.24\00:07:57.21 Daniel begged for time, and then spent the not praying, 00:07:57.24\00:08:00.44 and he got the answer. 00:08:00.48\00:08:01.81 Beyond that, he seemed to be serene in any situation. 00:08:01.84\00:08:05.65 You know, he seemed to want to be a good citizen, 00:08:05.68\00:08:09.42 and to fit in, and to support the state. 00:08:09.45\00:08:12.12 But, you know, I think whenever the state crossed the line, 00:08:12.15\00:08:16.73 he was willing to bear the consequences. 00:08:16.76\00:08:18.73 Well, the story at the end of the book 00:08:18.76\00:08:21.36 is amazing with Belshazzar's feast. 00:08:21.40\00:08:25.23 That was one occasion Daniel didn't mince words 00:08:25.27\00:08:28.84 'cause they weren't his words, 00:08:28.87\00:08:30.21 but still he could have soften the writing on the wall. 00:08:30.24\00:08:32.74 But he says, instead, you kingdom is... 00:08:32.77\00:08:34.64 "You are weighed in the balance 00:08:34.68\00:08:36.01 as your kingdom is found wanting." 00:08:36.04\00:08:37.55 Right. 00:08:37.58\00:08:38.91 It's quite a contrast between his interaction 00:08:38.95\00:08:40.95 with Belteshazzar and Nebuchadnezzar. 00:08:40.98\00:08:42.92 There was a degree of respect 00:08:42.95\00:08:44.29 with Nebuchadnezzar that was not shown. 00:08:44.32\00:08:46.35 And clearly Daniel 00:08:46.39\00:08:47.86 realized that the state had gone too far, 00:08:47.89\00:08:50.53 had crossed the line, 00:08:50.56\00:08:51.89 and he had to take a firm stand and to be bold. 00:08:51.93\00:08:54.60 And I think that we should look at that example, 00:08:54.63\00:08:59.03 you know, that there are times 00:08:59.07\00:09:00.40 we don't have to always be protesting, 00:09:00.44\00:09:02.57 but there's a time 00:09:02.60\00:09:03.94 when the state crosses the line, 00:09:03.97\00:09:05.31 and we've got to be bold in our condemnation 00:09:05.34\00:09:07.38 of what's taking place around us. 00:09:07.41\00:09:08.91 Absolutely. 00:09:08.94\00:09:10.35 You've given the takeaway from this program two minutes early. 00:09:10.38\00:09:16.55 But no, I believe it's not just a kid's song or a kid's story. 00:09:16.58\00:09:21.62 Daniel does speak to today of the complication 00:09:21.66\00:09:25.53 that serving the state brings in more and more, 00:09:25.56\00:09:28.23 you know, wanted or not in modern societies, 00:09:28.26\00:09:30.97 we can easily opt out. 00:09:31.00\00:09:32.97 We're part of the mesh of responsibility. 00:09:33.00\00:09:37.61 But here's what I'll also point out. 00:09:37.64\00:09:39.77 And, you know, it just talks 00:09:39.81\00:09:41.38 about our relationship with God. 00:09:41.41\00:09:43.91 I mean, Daniel was taken captive 00:09:43.95\00:09:46.65 and lived in Babylon 00:09:46.68\00:09:48.32 and lived in Babylon all of his life. 00:09:48.35\00:09:50.75 There's no indication from the story 00:09:50.79\00:09:52.52 that he was ever able to return to Jerusalem. 00:09:52.55\00:09:56.73 And yet, despite that, 00:09:56.76\00:09:58.19 he lived under an oppressive regime. 00:09:58.23\00:10:01.30 For several year. 00:10:01.33\00:10:02.66 And yet under those circumstances, 00:10:02.70\00:10:04.80 he remained faithful to God. 00:10:04.83\00:10:06.60 And that's quite a testimony to us that, 00:10:06.63\00:10:08.80 you know, 00:10:08.84\00:10:10.17 just by the oppression that we're facing, 00:10:10.21\00:10:11.97 the challenges that we're dealing with, 00:10:12.01\00:10:13.78 God expects us to rise under any circumstance 00:10:13.81\00:10:17.01 that we find ourselves in. 00:10:17.05\00:10:18.38 He went from the bottom all the way 00:10:18.41\00:10:19.81 to the top in government 00:10:19.85\00:10:21.22 despite living in an oppressive system. 00:10:21.25\00:10:23.42 I think that we should do that as Christians. 00:10:23.45\00:10:26.65 With few exceptions, integrity is recognized 00:10:26.69\00:10:29.72 even in a communist regime or dictatorship. 00:10:29.76\00:10:32.36 They need people of integrity, they don't need traitors. 00:10:32.39\00:10:35.56 But a Christian shouldn't be a traitor to any system. 00:10:35.60\00:10:38.33 That's worth remembering 00:10:38.37\00:10:39.77 No, I think Daniel is someone that we should admire, 00:10:39.80\00:10:42.94 we should emulate, 00:10:42.97\00:10:45.57 you know, he survived in an oppressive system 00:10:45.61\00:10:49.21 and excelled. 00:10:49.24\00:10:50.58 Psalms 137 has the captives in Babylon 00:10:54.35\00:10:59.15 but wailing their fate saying that, 00:10:59.19\00:11:01.46 "By the rivers of Babylon, 00:11:01.49\00:11:02.82 we sat down, 00:11:02.86\00:11:04.19 and they that brought us there in captivity 00:11:04.23\00:11:07.10 required of us a song." 00:11:07.13\00:11:09.16 And then dramatically, they asked the question, 00:11:09.20\00:11:11.53 "How can we sing the Lord's song 00:11:11.57\00:11:13.80 in a strange land?" 00:11:13.84\00:11:15.80 The story of Babylon and Daniel is quite an amazing one. 00:11:15.84\00:11:20.78 You can read it in the book of Daniel. 00:11:20.81\00:11:23.31 But in my view, we today are in the same position. 00:11:23.35\00:11:27.62 All Christians should see themselves 00:11:27.65\00:11:29.65 as in a strange land. 00:11:29.68\00:11:31.25 This is not our home. 00:11:31.29\00:11:34.09 And the trick, the challenge, 00:11:34.12\00:11:36.89 the duty before us 00:11:36.93\00:11:39.13 is how do we stand for the Lord, 00:11:39.16\00:11:40.96 sing the song through our life, 00:11:41.00\00:11:42.96 a song that will attract other people 00:11:43.00\00:11:44.77 by its melody 00:11:44.80\00:11:46.47 and its compelling pattern of consistency to God. 00:11:46.50\00:11:50.44 How can we sing that, attract other people, 00:11:50.47\00:11:52.87 live a life of character 00:11:52.91\00:11:55.04 that will be not just sung about 00:11:55.08\00:11:57.75 but celebrated through the centuries. 00:11:57.78\00:12:00.95 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed.
