Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:04.97\00:00:07.04 Before the break, 00:00:07.07\00:00:08.80 we were discussing this Doctrine of Discovery 00:00:08.84\00:00:12.11 and the role of papal mandate in centuries of actions 00:00:12.14\00:00:17.65 by what became major powers even in the United States. 00:00:17.68\00:00:22.45 So let's talk again, what are we left with today? 00:00:22.48\00:00:26.02 Is it just a historical anomaly? 00:00:26.05\00:00:27.82 Or do you think this is really 00:00:27.86\00:00:29.56 part of national assumptions and actions? 00:00:29.59\00:00:32.49 You know, I think, 00:00:32.53\00:00:33.90 you know, when we talk about these things 00:00:33.93\00:00:35.83 and then we begin to understand the impact 00:00:35.86\00:00:39.83 that it continues to have on our society, 00:00:39.87\00:00:43.04 we need to look at the groups who have been impacted. 00:00:43.07\00:00:47.58 In this country, we look at Native Americans 00:00:47.61\00:00:50.31 and we look at African Americans, 00:00:50.35\00:00:52.71 and how they had been impacted by these actions. 00:00:52.75\00:00:57.85 And the question always comes up, 00:00:57.89\00:01:00.42 how do you restore? 00:01:00.46\00:01:01.79 What's necessary to begin to repair the damage 00:01:01.82\00:01:05.36 that's been done? 00:01:05.39\00:01:06.96 How do we restore countries in Africa 00:01:07.00\00:01:10.07 that have been divided? 00:01:10.10\00:01:11.43 And their cultures have been changed. 00:01:11.47\00:01:12.97 You know, countries that spoke one language, 00:01:13.00\00:01:14.80 they're now speaking English, 00:01:14.84\00:01:16.44 they're speaking French or Spanish 00:01:16.47\00:01:18.87 or, you know, 00:01:18.91\00:01:20.24 people in the Caribbean or, you know... 00:01:20.28\00:01:22.41 These are serious questions, how do you begin to repair it? 00:01:22.44\00:01:26.28 You know, we know with Jesus and Zacchaeus, 00:01:26.31\00:01:29.32 there had to be some restoration 00:01:29.35\00:01:30.99 that was done after his actions. 00:01:31.02\00:01:33.56 Jesus didn't demand it, but with His change of heart, 00:01:33.59\00:01:36.59 He recognized that might be required. 00:01:36.62\00:01:38.93 Right. 00:01:38.96\00:01:41.16 You can't set everything right in this world, 00:01:41.20\00:01:43.47 and that's of course why there's a new world needed. 00:01:43.50\00:01:46.70 And even as you step... 00:01:46.74\00:01:49.10 We started up again. 00:01:49.14\00:01:51.71 It occurred to me as worth remembering that, 00:01:51.74\00:01:53.64 yes, the Spanish in South America and the Dutch 00:01:53.68\00:01:57.05 and the English and the French in North America 00:01:57.08\00:02:00.92 walked pretty steel-toed 00:02:00.95\00:02:06.05 and heavy-heeled over 00:02:06.09\00:02:10.86 anyone that lived there. 00:02:10.89\00:02:12.99 The standard method 00:02:13.03\00:02:14.56 was not just to go and kill them 00:02:14.60\00:02:16.13 and deprive them directly, 00:02:16.16\00:02:17.73 you would play on the alliance's 00:02:17.77\00:02:19.60 of different tribes to set one against another. 00:02:19.63\00:02:22.30 So it's not quite as simple in the bigger picture 00:02:22.34\00:02:25.57 of a European power taking away. 00:02:25.61\00:02:28.68 They were an evil presence 00:02:28.71\00:02:30.58 where they encouraged rivalries and so on, 00:02:30.61\00:02:33.15 and absent certainly with the Inca and the Mayans, 00:02:33.18\00:02:38.42 absent European intervention, 00:02:38.45\00:02:41.09 they would have been a fight between different factions 00:02:41.12\00:02:43.73 that would have overthrown one and established another. 00:02:43.76\00:02:46.66 So I don't really know 00:02:46.70\00:02:48.13 how you could untangle all of history, 00:02:48.16\00:02:51.30 even recognizing a horrible evil in this case 00:02:51.33\00:02:54.40 on the part of the papally authorized conquerors. 00:02:54.44\00:02:59.01 And we were talking during the break. 00:02:59.04\00:03:00.44 We see this issue playing out in South Africa, 00:03:00.48\00:03:02.81 you know, the president, our current president, 00:03:02.84\00:03:05.91 seemingly as a distraction 00:03:05.95\00:03:07.82 mentioned that white farmers are being murdered 00:03:07.85\00:03:10.29 in South Africa on mass. 00:03:10.32\00:03:12.09 And you know, we know that they are discussions 00:03:12.12\00:03:15.16 taking place in South Africa over what to do with the land. 00:03:15.19\00:03:19.23 Plus he wasn't president then. 00:03:19.26\00:03:21.30 But you know, what happened in Zimbabwe 00:03:21.33\00:03:23.20 was something that really should have been reacted 00:03:23.23\00:03:25.20 against when thousands of white farmers 00:03:25.23\00:03:28.20 were not only chased off the land, 00:03:28.24\00:03:30.01 some of them were killed in their farm houses. 00:03:30.04\00:03:31.91 There was a huge historical backlash. 00:03:31.94\00:03:34.44 There's no question. 00:03:34.48\00:03:35.84 The white settlement 00:03:35.88\00:03:37.21 there was the gross expensive 00:03:37.25\00:03:39.41 of natives and tribal groups. 00:03:39.45\00:03:43.32 But you know, where do you roll back history? 00:03:43.35\00:03:45.65 Is one injustice... 00:03:45.69\00:03:47.02 Can you roll it back, right? 00:03:47.06\00:03:48.39 Can you roll it back 00:03:48.42\00:03:49.76 or can you figure out a solution that, 00:03:49.79\00:03:51.13 you know, bring some measure of justice 00:03:51.16\00:03:54.16 and injustice that's been around 00:03:54.20\00:03:55.93 for close to 300-400 years? 00:03:55.96\00:03:57.30 Yeah. And it's worth remembering. 00:03:57.33\00:03:58.67 I don't think most people have quite tweeted on it. 00:03:58.70\00:04:01.97 Since World War II, which is in most respects, 00:04:02.00\00:04:05.54 a post colonial era, 00:04:05.57\00:04:09.04 an awful lot of the conflicts within emerging countries 00:04:09.08\00:04:14.88 often encouraged by communist powers 00:04:14.92\00:04:17.92 have been land ownership issues. 00:04:17.95\00:04:23.73 Chile, that's what was going on. 00:04:23.76\00:04:26.23 Most recently in Venezuela, that's exactly what's going on. 00:04:26.26\00:04:31.33 In the West, with our capitalist mindset, 00:04:31.37\00:04:36.50 we tend to see it as an abuse, 00:04:36.54\00:04:38.87 but it's a roughshod way 00:04:38.91\00:04:40.81 of redressing the injustices of the past. 00:04:40.84\00:04:43.55 I don't think it's always, in fact, really done well, 00:04:43.58\00:04:46.55 but it's an attempt to reach back 00:04:46.58\00:04:48.58 into the horribly unjust past. 00:04:48.62\00:04:50.82 Well, you know, as a country, we now engage in treaties 00:04:50.85\00:04:54.49 and agreements with some of these countries. 00:04:54.52\00:04:57.56 And the question is 00:04:57.59\00:05:00.53 our past practice is continuing. 00:05:00.56\00:05:03.30 You know, 00:05:03.33\00:05:04.67 are we taking advantage of these countries 00:05:04.70\00:05:06.03 because of our superior economic power. 00:05:06.07\00:05:09.50 And that's an issue 00:05:09.54\00:05:10.87 that we need to look at as well, 00:05:10.91\00:05:13.34 you know, is the exploitation continuing? 00:05:13.38\00:05:15.81 Might makes right, 00:05:15.84\00:05:17.58 and I don't think that's quoted from that book, 00:05:17.61\00:05:19.71 but, you know, Machiavelli is the prince. 00:05:19.75\00:05:21.35 He can read that writ large. 00:05:21.38\00:05:22.72 Basically, if you can get away with it, it's fine. 00:05:22.75\00:05:25.69 But you know, 00:05:25.72\00:05:27.06 I could tell a story not on America, 00:05:27.09\00:05:30.59 but on Australia, my homeland. 00:05:30.63\00:05:33.09 And I know this for a fact 00:05:33.13\00:05:34.46 because I had the conversation 00:05:34.50\00:05:35.83 with the president of East Timor, 00:05:35.86\00:05:39.77 a little country of only three million people. 00:05:39.80\00:05:42.64 They recently got their independence 00:05:42.67\00:05:44.87 in this new century. 00:05:44.91\00:05:47.98 Australia helped birth their freedom 00:05:48.01\00:05:50.05 because there was a civil war broke out caused by Indonesia, 00:05:50.08\00:05:54.42 who'd had an invasion and rulership. 00:05:54.45\00:05:57.72 Australia helped free them. 00:05:57.75\00:05:59.32 But in the freeing of them, 00:05:59.35\00:06:00.69 Australia, in a friendly manner, 00:06:00.72\00:06:03.49 broken an agreement where a huge oil field 00:06:03.53\00:06:06.23 that embraced East Timor and the oceans 00:06:06.26\00:06:08.50 nearby that they owned, 00:06:08.53\00:06:10.10 Australia got, I think, 70% of the action on it. 00:06:10.13\00:06:13.20 And the president was very unhappy, 00:06:13.23\00:06:15.10 "Oh, yes, they took advantage of us," but might makes right. 00:06:15.14\00:06:17.94 What position was he to challenge it? 00:06:17.97\00:06:19.94 So basically, you know, 00:06:19.97\00:06:22.81 the strong nearby power 00:06:22.84\00:06:26.35 took advantage of a weaker neighbor 00:06:26.38\00:06:27.98 and took most of their goods. 00:06:28.02\00:06:30.62 And you know, this is why, you know, it should concern us. 00:06:30.65\00:06:35.22 We should pay close attention to these things 00:06:35.26\00:06:37.69 when the country, 00:06:37.73\00:06:39.46 you know, when a new administration comes in, 00:06:39.49\00:06:41.33 and we say, "Well, we're going to renegotiate 00:06:41.36\00:06:43.47 all our agreements to make them, 00:06:43.50\00:06:46.27 you know, work to our benefit." 00:06:46.30\00:06:49.60 That's probably correct. Sure. 00:06:49.64\00:06:50.97 Most of us have seldom seen such a naked grab 00:06:51.01\00:06:53.24 for power and influence on the global stage. 00:06:53.27\00:06:56.91 You know, we can't question... 00:06:56.95\00:06:58.88 It's hard to question 00:06:58.91\00:07:00.25 what was going on inside the president's head, 00:07:00.28\00:07:01.85 but, you know, maybe he feels perfectly... 00:07:01.88\00:07:04.52 He probably does feel perfectly justified. 00:07:04.55\00:07:06.32 But in the norms of how countries operate, 00:07:06.35\00:07:09.02 they've often done these same things, 00:07:09.06\00:07:10.53 but under cover of palaver and all those. 00:07:10.56\00:07:13.06 But here it's just... 00:07:13.09\00:07:14.86 It's upfront, and it makes you wonder 00:07:14.90\00:07:18.73 if we're now entering a new era of discovery, 00:07:18.77\00:07:21.87 where we just unfold... 00:07:21.90\00:07:23.41 Yes, or I was going to say a new age of barbarism. 00:07:23.44\00:07:25.14 Yes, discovery was an age of barbarism, 00:07:25.17\00:07:27.34 but under the cloak of frilly collars, 00:07:27.38\00:07:29.94 and hose and doublet, and the musket, 00:07:29.98\00:07:32.68 or not the musket even then, but you know, 00:07:32.71\00:07:35.05 firearms, which... 00:07:35.08\00:07:37.39 That was usually the single thing 00:07:37.42\00:07:39.19 that one of the day is they were coming. 00:07:39.22\00:07:41.92 And the question is, 00:07:41.96\00:07:43.29 you know, what role does a church play in this? 00:07:43.32\00:07:45.93 Well, you already said one church, 00:07:45.96\00:07:48.33 a politico-religious church structure. 00:07:48.36\00:07:51.40 It actually, if not created it, then directed it. 00:07:51.43\00:07:55.87 But when I talk about that, 00:07:55.90\00:07:58.57 how should the church comment on these issues? 00:07:58.61\00:08:01.38 Absolutely. It's a good question. 00:08:01.41\00:08:02.74 Should the church look at what's taking place and say, 00:08:02.78\00:08:04.21 "You know what, this isn't right. 00:08:04.25\00:08:06.58 We need to treat our neighbors right." 00:08:06.61\00:08:09.45 Yes, I believe that the church 00:08:09.48\00:08:11.69 and people of Christian morality 00:08:11.72\00:08:13.22 need to speak up unequivocally and plainly on the morality 00:08:13.25\00:08:19.09 of all sorts of things that are happening 00:08:19.13\00:08:20.83 in the political world around us. 00:08:20.86\00:08:23.23 I think it's very dangerous 00:08:23.26\00:08:25.03 on the view of separation of church and state 00:08:25.07\00:08:26.97 and religious liberty that we speak to policy issues 00:08:27.00\00:08:30.84 rather than the morality. 00:08:30.87\00:08:33.01 But on any policy issue, 00:08:33.04\00:08:34.84 without talking about the policy, we can say, 00:08:34.88\00:08:36.91 for example, on immigration 00:08:36.95\00:08:38.75 that people are being abused here, 00:08:38.78\00:08:40.95 treated in an unchristian way as that law is executed. 00:08:40.98\00:08:44.42 We don't need to speak about the law 00:08:44.45\00:08:46.25 unless it's a grossly unjust law in itself, 00:08:46.29\00:08:48.59 then you've got a moral issue. 00:08:48.62\00:08:51.29 But we need to speak out, 00:08:51.33\00:08:52.93 speak out against the police 00:08:52.96\00:08:56.43 abusing people in their community 00:08:56.46\00:08:58.83 when that happens, and it does happen. 00:08:58.87\00:09:01.20 We need to speak out even of the attitude 00:09:01.24\00:09:05.51 that the US might exemplify toward another country 00:09:05.54\00:09:08.31 that this is not the way Christian society should act. 00:09:08.34\00:09:12.55 I think there's a whole leeway without getting into policy, 00:09:12.58\00:09:15.78 but we have to speak out with moral voice, and urgency, 00:09:15.82\00:09:20.49 and not, you know... 00:09:20.52\00:09:22.96 I know you'd object me saying legally, 00:09:22.99\00:09:24.86 but, you know, these well thought out, 00:09:24.89\00:09:27.06 bloodless sort of statements that take away moral power, 00:09:27.10\00:09:30.40 and then often tilt towards 00:09:30.43\00:09:32.47 suggesting a political line of action. 00:09:32.50\00:09:35.67 We shouldn't be political. Right. 00:09:35.70\00:09:37.61 I think the key thing is to remember that, 00:09:37.64\00:09:39.94 you know, we are our neighbor's keeper, 00:09:39.97\00:09:42.11 and, you know, we can't ignore someone suffering 00:09:42.14\00:09:46.01 while we are enjoying the benefits of, 00:09:46.05\00:09:48.82 you know, where we are. 00:09:48.85\00:09:50.19 And I think, we have that responsibility as individuals, 00:09:50.22\00:09:53.66 we have that responsibility as a church. 00:09:53.69\00:09:56.12 And I agree with you, 00:09:56.16\00:09:57.49 the church needs to speak and speak with a strong voice 00:09:57.53\00:10:01.53 when, you know, immoral acts are taking place, 00:10:01.56\00:10:04.50 whether it's at the local level, 00:10:04.53\00:10:06.67 at the state level, or the federal level. 00:10:06.70\00:10:09.14 Absolutely. 00:10:09.17\00:10:10.51 And we need to speak out, beggars on street corners, 00:10:10.54\00:10:12.84 isn't that of some moral concern? 00:10:12.87\00:10:15.94 Be it antiabortion? 00:10:15.98\00:10:17.31 Is the church speaking out 00:10:17.35\00:10:18.68 about the hungry children in the US? 00:10:18.71\00:10:20.18 I think 30% of children go to bed hungry every night 00:10:20.22\00:10:23.22 according to statistics. 00:10:23.25\00:10:24.59 That's a moral concern. Right. 00:10:24.62\00:10:27.26 And we can't ignore those as a church. 00:10:27.29\00:10:28.76 So we need to speak. 00:10:28.79\00:10:30.63 Okay. 00:10:30.66\00:10:32.03 Yeah, you know, 00:10:32.06\00:10:33.40 I think it's very important for us to have a voice 00:10:33.43\00:10:35.96 within the community. 00:10:36.00\00:10:37.37 And I think, far too often as Adventist, 00:10:37.40\00:10:40.37 we have not been heard from. 00:10:40.40\00:10:42.84 But we need to be heard from on these moral issues 00:10:42.87\00:10:45.44 without becoming, you know, politically entangled, 00:10:45.47\00:10:48.08 we need to be able to say what's right and what's wrong. 00:10:48.11\00:10:50.91 A few years ago, the Vatican released a document entitled, 00:10:54.52\00:10:58.15 Memory and Reconciliation. 00:10:58.19\00:11:01.39 In it, they apologized 00:11:01.42\00:11:02.76 for many of the abuses of the past, 00:11:02.79\00:11:04.73 including persecution of the Jews, 00:11:04.76\00:11:07.60 the inquisition, and so on. 00:11:07.63\00:11:12.33 As we've discussed in this program, 00:11:12.37\00:11:14.64 many of the things that happened in the new world 00:11:14.67\00:11:16.91 are directly traceable 00:11:16.94\00:11:18.84 to a stance taken by the church at the time. 00:11:18.87\00:11:21.94 Endorsing the disposition of whole peoples 00:11:21.98\00:11:25.51 and authorizing rapacious states to plant the flag 00:11:25.55\00:11:30.02 and claim the land regardless of who owns it 00:11:30.05\00:11:32.52 or what was there, 00:11:32.55\00:11:33.89 and to do whatever they want with it, 00:11:33.92\00:11:35.66 even including at one time 00:11:35.69\00:11:37.66 saying that these people had no souls, 00:11:37.69\00:11:39.76 they were not to be regarded. 00:11:39.79\00:11:41.66 We need to move beyond history, 00:11:41.70\00:11:43.30 and the Vatican has been shifting that way. 00:11:43.33\00:11:46.30 But we, Protestants, 00:11:46.33\00:11:47.97 know that the story is more complicated. 00:11:48.00\00:11:50.57 We know that we need to depend on upon the Lord 00:11:50.61\00:11:53.88 and that Promised Land. 00:11:53.91\00:11:56.44 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:11:56.48\00:11:59.51
