Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:05.67\00:00:07.40 Before the break with guest, John Ashmeade, the attorney. 00:00:07.44\00:00:11.51 John Ashmeade, that's a lot of credibility 00:00:11.54\00:00:13.58 because attorneys if nothing else 00:00:13.61\00:00:14.94 should know history, right? 00:00:14.98\00:00:16.31 Oh, my goodness. 00:00:16.34\00:00:17.68 Isn't that one of the prerequisites 00:00:17.71\00:00:19.05 pretty much? 00:00:19.08\00:00:20.42 No, it's not, but... 00:00:20.45\00:00:21.78 Well, may be prerequisite is the wrong word. 00:00:21.82\00:00:23.15 I've been told many times that's a good backdrop 00:00:23.18\00:00:25.05 to going into law. 00:00:25.09\00:00:26.42 Right. 00:00:26.45\00:00:27.79 Yes, you have to know case history. 00:00:27.82\00:00:29.16 Right. Case law, right. 00:00:29.19\00:00:30.53 Yeah, case law. 00:00:30.56\00:00:31.99 But we've been talking about the state of freedoms 00:00:32.03\00:00:35.06 and religious liberty in the US today. 00:00:35.10\00:00:36.56 And you have a very sunny up, weekly over, 00:00:36.60\00:00:39.70 you know, cleared of the horizon. 00:00:39.73\00:00:41.67 But then you mentioned religion, 00:00:41.70\00:00:45.11 which, of course, is central 00:00:45.14\00:00:46.47 to religious freedom. 00:00:46.51\00:00:48.11 And the predictions, 00:00:48.14\00:00:49.48 I think it's clear enough in the Bible in Revelation 13, 00:00:49.51\00:00:53.28 arguably talks about the role of the United States 00:00:53.31\00:00:56.18 in conjunction with a despotic ancient power. 00:00:56.22\00:01:00.99 And Seventh-day Adventists believe that 00:01:01.02\00:01:02.52 that likely will work out through 00:01:02.56\00:01:04.33 direct religious legislation as far as the day of worship. 00:01:04.36\00:01:09.50 You don't see that eminent. 00:01:09.53\00:01:11.93 What signs do you see of that or lack of signs? 00:01:11.97\00:01:14.14 Right, I don't see that as eminent right now. 00:01:14.17\00:01:16.81 I think that, you know, right now 00:01:16.84\00:01:19.17 there is an epic struggle taking place 00:01:19.21\00:01:21.14 between the religious point of view 00:01:21.18\00:01:22.54 and a secular point of view. 00:01:22.58\00:01:24.21 And in many respects, 00:01:24.25\00:01:25.58 a secular point of view still is dominant. 00:01:25.61\00:01:27.72 You know, you can take any number of issues, 00:01:27.75\00:01:29.68 and, you know, you see that playing out. 00:01:29.72\00:01:32.59 So, you know, 00:01:32.62\00:01:34.16 I see religious people working together more and more, 00:01:34.19\00:01:39.33 and you know I think there's a sleeping beast 00:01:39.36\00:01:42.30 that can be awakened at some point, 00:01:42.33\00:01:44.03 but it's still sleeping I think. 00:01:44.07\00:01:45.80 And, you know, we see the secular point of view 00:01:45.83\00:01:48.57 still holding sway. 00:01:48.60\00:01:50.11 Much has been made 00:01:50.14\00:01:51.47 of the secular character of Europe 00:01:51.51\00:01:54.41 and the residually, or more than residually 00:01:54.44\00:01:58.38 that the prominent role of religion 00:01:58.41\00:02:01.02 in the United States. 00:02:01.05\00:02:02.75 And, you know, and on this program 00:02:02.78\00:02:04.15 I've often quoted Alexis de Tocqueville's 00:02:04.19\00:02:07.12 pretty searching comments 00:02:07.16\00:02:08.72 we see in the early 1800s, he came to the US 00:02:08.76\00:02:11.86 and sort of looked at it like a lab rat. 00:02:11.89\00:02:16.13 And he was very plain that the role of religion 00:02:16.16\00:02:19.83 under the separation of church and state 00:02:19.87\00:02:21.84 had made the US a very dynamic place 00:02:21.87\00:02:24.97 as far as religious expression. 00:02:25.01\00:02:27.18 You think that's gone or in recession? 00:02:27.21\00:02:32.28 Right. You do? 00:02:32.31\00:02:33.65 No, well, you know, 00:02:33.68\00:02:35.02 you look at different news stations 00:02:35.05\00:02:37.39 and you get a sense that things are really bad 00:02:37.42\00:02:39.59 and then in another center not that bad. 00:02:39.62\00:02:42.56 You know, people talk about not being able to say 00:02:42.59\00:02:45.26 Merry Christmas anymore, 00:02:45.29\00:02:46.90 and, you know, 00:02:46.93\00:02:48.26 you have to say Happy Holidays. 00:02:48.30\00:02:50.20 And they view that as religious oppression. 00:02:50.23\00:02:52.93 I don't necessarily view it by the way. 00:02:52.97\00:02:54.30 No, I agree with you. 00:02:54.34\00:02:55.67 I don't think it's religious oppression. 00:02:55.70\00:02:57.04 I think, you know. 00:02:57.07\00:02:58.61 But we drove a few hours to get to the studio. 00:02:58.64\00:03:04.95 I don't think it's any secret 00:03:04.98\00:03:06.31 that the recording studios for 3ABN 00:03:06.35\00:03:09.55 are in what's commonly called fly over country. 00:03:09.58\00:03:12.22 Wonderful country, but it's not Hollywood country, 00:03:12.25\00:03:16.56 it's not big city country. 00:03:16.59\00:03:18.43 But it's where a good percentage 00:03:18.46\00:03:20.23 of Americans live. 00:03:20.26\00:03:21.60 And they have all the problems of people everywhere. 00:03:21.63\00:03:25.40 It's not sweetness and light. 00:03:25.43\00:03:27.34 But I can tell you the residual standard view 00:03:27.37\00:03:30.21 out in these little towns while then people may not be 00:03:30.24\00:03:34.18 devoutly spiritually religious, it's... 00:03:34.21\00:03:36.85 This is... 00:03:36.88\00:03:38.21 Religion is my identity, it's a country's identity. 00:03:38.25\00:03:41.15 I don't think that's gone away 00:03:41.18\00:03:42.52 if anything is hardened in the US. 00:03:42.55\00:03:44.29 And that's a positive, 00:03:44.32\00:03:45.65 you know, it's a good thing 00:03:45.69\00:03:47.46 that on a Sabbath or on a Sunday, 00:03:47.49\00:03:50.53 you know, a large majority of Americans 00:03:50.56\00:03:52.83 can go to church and they can worship, 00:03:52.86\00:03:55.03 and, you know, 00:03:55.06\00:03:56.40 the government isn't there monitoring 00:03:56.43\00:03:58.57 and trying to prevent them from worshipping 00:03:58.60\00:04:00.57 or placing limits on them. 00:04:00.60\00:04:02.87 And so I think that's the strength of this country. 00:04:02.90\00:04:06.88 You know, my pastor can stand up 00:04:06.91\00:04:08.74 and give an impassioned sermons that at times 00:04:08.78\00:04:12.05 can have a political flavor to them 00:04:12.08\00:04:13.58 and make some people uncomfortable. 00:04:13.62\00:04:15.55 But, you know, after doing something like that, 00:04:15.58\00:04:17.65 the government doesn't come in, swoop in, and arrest them, 00:04:17.69\00:04:20.09 and, you know, card him off to prison. 00:04:20.12\00:04:22.56 And so I think, you know, in this country 00:04:22.59\00:04:24.66 that still is there, and that still 00:04:24.69\00:04:26.73 is our basic bedrock and foundation. 00:04:26.76\00:04:29.36 Yes, and another thing that I used to say a lot 00:04:29.40\00:04:32.53 when I first started in my job was I quoted for your... 00:04:32.57\00:04:36.60 Before the program, 00:04:36.64\00:04:37.97 you asked me about good writers. 00:04:38.01\00:04:40.01 And one fairly good writer was Charles Dickens. 00:04:40.04\00:04:45.68 Actually, not the best, 00:04:45.71\00:04:47.15 but at the time he was thought to be the best. 00:04:47.18\00:04:48.68 And his book, The Tale of Two Cities 00:04:48.72\00:04:50.39 written about the time of the French Revolution, 00:04:50.42\00:04:53.32 I'd think for a second is very telling. 00:04:53.36\00:04:55.56 He says, "It was the best of times, 00:04:55.59\00:04:56.93 and the worst of times." 00:04:56.96\00:04:58.29 And that's sort of how I characterize world at large, 00:04:58.33\00:05:01.70 and particularly the United States. 00:05:01.73\00:05:03.67 But because 00:05:03.70\00:05:05.03 it's good in one regard and bad in another 00:05:05.07\00:05:06.77 doesn't mean it's not moving palpably 00:05:06.80\00:05:10.01 and inexorably towards the destination weeks. 00:05:10.04\00:05:12.34 Right. 00:05:12.37\00:05:13.71 And, you know, I know I've been painting, 00:05:13.74\00:05:15.51 perhaps a rosy picture, 00:05:15.54\00:05:16.88 we have some serious challenges in this country. 00:05:16.91\00:05:19.65 We still have the issue of race 00:05:19.68\00:05:22.05 that we have never dealt with. 00:05:22.08\00:05:23.65 And it continues to percolate below the surface 00:05:23.69\00:05:26.86 and present some real challenges for us, 00:05:26.89\00:05:29.26 you know, the country still almost seemingly remains 00:05:29.29\00:05:32.89 in a civil war between the south and the north. 00:05:32.93\00:05:35.83 And, you know, 00:05:35.86\00:05:37.20 we haven't figured out how to overcome that problem. 00:05:37.23\00:05:40.24 And that's, you know, in the country... 00:05:40.27\00:05:41.60 We can do a whole program on that. 00:05:41.64\00:05:42.97 We can do a whole program on that. 00:05:43.00\00:05:44.34 And even in the church, we haven't solved that issue. 00:05:44.37\00:05:47.08 And so, it remains a real problem for us, 00:05:47.11\00:05:49.24 and that we will have to tackle it at some point. 00:05:49.28\00:05:51.35 And I have radical views of that 00:05:51.38\00:05:54.08 is coming as an outsider, 00:05:54.12\00:05:55.78 I think it plays out in almost every aspect of US culture. 00:05:55.82\00:06:00.32 Even the way the police force works towards communities 00:06:00.36\00:06:04.19 is basically an extension in my view 00:06:04.23\00:06:06.49 of how the plantation was managed. 00:06:06.53\00:06:10.90 Even getting to your, especially the Supreme Court, 00:06:10.93\00:06:15.10 some of the decisions they've been flirting 00:06:15.14\00:06:16.94 with the corporate thing on rights and so on. 00:06:16.97\00:06:22.04 And that's the Constitution in my view, 00:06:22.08\00:06:24.08 it was predicated on property. 00:06:24.11\00:06:26.08 And the corporate view, that's... 00:06:26.11\00:06:28.95 If you think about it, if it hadn't been 00:06:28.98\00:06:30.49 for this corporate thing on property 00:06:30.52\00:06:32.29 and so on in the Constitution, 00:06:32.32\00:06:34.09 the contradiction would have been so self evident, 00:06:34.12\00:06:36.06 they wouldn't have dared to put it down 00:06:36.09\00:06:37.49 with the proportional representation 00:06:37.53\00:06:40.06 of slaves and so on. 00:06:40.10\00:06:41.43 But when you think property and a business right, 00:06:41.46\00:06:46.00 it fits nicely. 00:06:46.03\00:06:47.44 And we're going back to it. 00:06:47.47\00:06:49.77 The US, over the warnings of people 00:06:49.80\00:06:52.77 like President Eisenhower 00:06:52.81\00:06:56.54 is going to a very corporate, even fascist, 00:06:56.58\00:07:00.98 you know, it's a loaded term. 00:07:01.02\00:07:02.35 But fascism really is the instruments of government 00:07:02.38\00:07:04.99 and its departments, and the power, 00:07:05.02\00:07:08.26 and the machinery of it 00:07:08.29\00:07:09.99 has precedence over the rights of the individual. 00:07:10.03\00:07:11.96 This is a fascist style democratic, 00:07:11.99\00:07:18.43 representative democracy. 00:07:18.47\00:07:20.34 I think what's driving a lot of this is fear. 00:07:20.37\00:07:23.81 Well, yes, the cold war, we grew up. 00:07:23.84\00:07:25.44 Right. You and I both grew up. 00:07:25.47\00:07:26.81 But I know, but in terms of just people, 00:07:26.84\00:07:28.84 you know, people are fearful, 00:07:28.88\00:07:30.81 they don't know who's on their side, 00:07:30.85\00:07:33.31 they don't know if they can trust the government, 00:07:33.35\00:07:34.88 they don't know if they can trust their neighbor. 00:07:34.92\00:07:36.62 And when you add to that, you know, 00:07:36.65\00:07:38.39 the mix of social media and all the misinformation 00:07:38.42\00:07:40.72 that's flying around, 00:07:40.76\00:07:42.19 you know, it creates an atmosphere 00:07:42.22\00:07:43.79 where people, you know, can really be led astray 00:07:43.83\00:07:47.50 from really what the truth is. 00:07:47.53\00:07:50.10 And, you know, 00:07:50.13\00:07:51.53 this is turning out to be a good discussion 00:07:51.57\00:07:53.00 that I'm in danger of revealing 00:07:53.03\00:07:54.47 too much of my worldview with you. 00:07:54.50\00:07:55.84 Okay, that's okay, 00:07:55.87\00:07:57.41 I'm gonna pull it out of you, Lincoln. 00:07:57.44\00:08:00.44 But, you know, 00:08:00.48\00:08:02.01 there's an upside and downside to everything, 00:08:02.04\00:08:04.11 but this fear thing is very real. 00:08:04.15\00:08:07.02 But there's a conundrum on this. 00:08:07.05\00:08:11.39 In Europe, even in recent years 00:08:11.42\00:08:14.16 say in the ex-Yugoslavia Republic of Serbia 00:08:14.19\00:08:20.93 and so on down there, 00:08:20.96\00:08:23.00 you know, they've had pate neighbors, 00:08:23.03\00:08:24.67 liquidating neighbors, 00:08:24.70\00:08:26.03 so, you know, not naive, 00:08:26.07\00:08:27.54 but I think in Europe as a whole, 00:08:27.57\00:08:30.67 they're not afraid of their neighbors the same way. 00:08:30.71\00:08:32.74 There's the peacefulness 00:08:32.77\00:08:34.34 especially when you get to countries like Switzerland, 00:08:34.38\00:08:36.48 that's never existed in the US. 00:08:36.51\00:08:38.95 And I sort of I'm constantly analyzing it. 00:08:38.98\00:08:42.35 I don't think the US 00:08:42.38\00:08:44.09 really has a fixed friendly neighborhood concept. 00:08:44.12\00:08:50.99 We're all travelers, we've settled down, 00:08:51.03\00:08:53.70 and this is suspicion 00:08:53.73\00:08:55.20 that arises from the reconstruction 00:08:55.23\00:08:58.13 and the civil war of, 00:08:58.17\00:09:00.94 you know, the knight riders and all that sort of stuff. 00:09:00.97\00:09:04.14 There's just been agitation that people are very uncertain. 00:09:04.17\00:09:07.34 They don't trust their neighbors. 00:09:07.38\00:09:08.71 And I don't think it's just modernity 00:09:08.74\00:09:10.58 that's brought it on in the US. 00:09:10.61\00:09:12.01 I think there's always been these walls 00:09:12.05\00:09:15.45 and these, the unstated threat that destabilizes. 00:09:15.48\00:09:22.02 Anybody that comes from another country 00:09:22.06\00:09:23.79 knows that in the US there's electricity in the air. 00:09:23.83\00:09:26.06 You don't know, someone might randomly, 00:09:26.09\00:09:29.06 it doesn't happen often, but it happens randomly. 00:09:29.10\00:09:30.87 Someone might shoot you, it might be violent act. 00:09:30.90\00:09:33.03 That's not really true in other Western countries. 00:09:33.07\00:09:35.54 Sure. 00:09:35.57\00:09:36.91 I mean we are melting pot that's never fully melted. 00:09:36.94\00:09:38.97 Yes, that's a good way to put it. 00:09:39.01\00:09:40.48 Yeah. 00:09:40.51\00:09:41.84 And so the challenge is, 00:09:41.88\00:09:43.21 you know, bringing us together as a nation, 00:09:43.24\00:09:45.61 and it's very difficult. 00:09:45.65\00:09:47.02 But anyhow, I appreciate you bringing this positive view 00:09:47.05\00:09:49.42 because we all need to keep in mind, 00:09:49.45\00:09:51.45 there's a half full 00:09:51.49\00:09:52.82 and a half empty view of the glass. 00:09:52.85\00:09:55.52 And at the end of the day, 00:09:55.56\00:09:56.89 there's no question that United States remains 00:09:56.93\00:09:58.89 a spectacularly positive force in the world, 00:09:58.93\00:10:02.83 it's not always positive, but as a totality. 00:10:02.86\00:10:06.13 And we have a lot to be thankful for. 00:10:06.17\00:10:07.64 Sure. 00:10:07.67\00:10:09.00 So where do you think it goes from here though? 00:10:09.04\00:10:12.84 Is the positive to be sustained 00:10:12.87\00:10:14.78 or how do we guard against the drift 00:10:14.81\00:10:17.55 to a darker side? 00:10:17.58\00:10:19.68 So I'm very concerned. 00:10:19.71\00:10:23.28 I'm very concerned because, 00:10:23.32\00:10:25.09 you know, what I see occurring is, 00:10:25.12\00:10:28.02 you know, social media is presenting a real risk to us. 00:10:28.06\00:10:31.39 There are, you know, I'm on Facebook regularly, 00:10:31.43\00:10:34.36 and I... The things that I see my friends posting, 00:10:34.40\00:10:37.00 you know, quite often I will say to them, 00:10:37.03\00:10:39.70 you know, have you vetted this and they haven't. 00:10:39.73\00:10:42.37 And you just do a quick search, and you find out 00:10:42.40\00:10:44.57 that what they're saying isn't really true. 00:10:44.61\00:10:46.27 I've seen a lot of representations of the earth 00:10:49.28\00:10:52.41 spinning or floating through limitless space. 00:10:52.45\00:10:57.32 In some of the more bizarre ones, 00:10:57.35\00:10:59.15 there's all sorts of explosions 00:10:59.19\00:11:00.66 and cataclysms erupting like pustules 00:11:00.69\00:11:03.29 from the surface of a dangerous planet. 00:11:03.32\00:11:05.89 In other, it's a lonely planet, 00:11:05.93\00:11:07.86 blue, and silent, and not much happening. 00:11:07.90\00:11:10.47 In reality, this little world, 00:11:10.50\00:11:12.73 this spec among a cascade of specs in space 00:11:12.77\00:11:19.14 is the center for us, 00:11:19.17\00:11:21.48 and arguably the apple of God's eye 00:11:21.51\00:11:24.78 if you like because a great principle 00:11:24.81\00:11:26.55 is being worked out here, 00:11:26.58\00:11:28.08 a cataclysmic battle between the anti-God principle 00:11:28.12\00:11:31.69 and those who are loyal to God. 00:11:31.72\00:11:33.99 This world is in turmoil, there's no question. 00:11:34.02\00:11:37.33 But we need to see beyond this 00:11:37.36\00:11:39.06 a resolution, a great victory, 00:11:39.09\00:11:41.33 and this little blue planet is going to brilliantly shine 00:11:41.36\00:11:45.30 not because of what it is because of what God is. 00:11:45.33\00:11:49.80 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:11:49.84\00:11:53.21
