Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:26.32\00:00:27.96 This is your program, 00:00:27.99\00:00:29.32 bringing you everything 00:00:29.36\00:00:30.99 that matters on religious liberty. 00:00:31.03\00:00:32.69 Everything. Everything. 00:00:32.73\00:00:34.33 I guess he's already into the game here. 00:00:34.36\00:00:36.40 But we're bringing you news, you need that information, 00:00:36.43\00:00:39.37 you need that and perhaps an interpretation and analysis. 00:00:39.40\00:00:43.87 And my name is Lincoln Steed, editor of Liberty magazine. 00:00:43.91\00:00:47.31 And my guest on the program, Attorney Alan Reinach. 00:00:47.34\00:00:51.51 A man that speaks up without any inhibition. 00:00:51.55\00:00:53.21 Not a big wall fire, no. 00:00:53.25\00:00:56.08 Not a bit of it. 00:00:56.12\00:00:57.45 From the Church State Council in California, 00:00:57.49\00:00:59.42 Executive Director. 00:00:59.45\00:01:02.22 So we'll talk about something that I could be tempted to do 00:01:02.26\00:01:05.86 when someone speaks up like othering, 00:01:05.89\00:01:09.16 addresses of othering. 00:01:09.20\00:01:10.83 Take the word other and make it into a verb. 00:01:10.87\00:01:14.14 Now you're preaching on this at the moment. 00:01:14.17\00:01:17.14 You told me preparing a sermon. 00:01:17.17\00:01:18.81 Liberty magazines had an article on this. 00:01:18.84\00:01:21.24 It isn't just a whimsical topic 00:01:21.28\00:01:23.45 that we want to share right now. 00:01:23.48\00:01:25.38 I think this is a very real 00:01:25.41\00:01:27.75 dynamic that's happened in the past before, 00:01:27.78\00:01:29.85 but we're definitely living through a process 00:01:29.88\00:01:33.19 where other human beings, 00:01:33.22\00:01:34.92 either from another race, another ethnicity, 00:01:34.96\00:01:40.20 or nationality, or of another religion, 00:01:40.23\00:01:43.57 just of another group of humans 00:01:43.60\00:01:45.80 or other made into ultimately non humans. 00:01:45.83\00:01:49.70 And then very bad things often happen 00:01:49.74\00:01:51.81 when that dynamic kicks in, right? 00:01:51.84\00:01:53.81 You know, Lincoln, what I want to do is contrast 00:01:53.84\00:01:57.25 two passages of scripture, Revelation 13 and Matthew 25. 00:01:57.28\00:02:02.98 Revelation 13, we have persecution against those 00:02:03.02\00:02:07.02 who do not accept the mark of the beast. 00:02:07.06\00:02:10.03 And I don't know... 00:02:10.06\00:02:11.56 Which is pretty severe because you can't buy or sell 00:02:11.59\00:02:13.56 unless you go along with this. 00:02:13.60\00:02:14.93 You can't buy or sell. 00:02:14.96\00:02:16.30 And ultimately it's a capital offense 00:02:16.33\00:02:17.67 not to participate in the majority form 00:02:17.70\00:02:20.64 of worship. 00:02:20.67\00:02:22.00 I mean, people get hung up on whether, 00:02:22.04\00:02:23.84 you know, it's in the fold, 00:02:23.87\00:02:25.21 I mean where it's branded on you or whatever. 00:02:25.24\00:02:27.18 But it's clearly a distinguishing characteristic 00:02:27.21\00:02:29.94 that you buy into. 00:02:29.98\00:02:31.35 But what we miss, if we read this to, you know, shallowly, 00:02:31.38\00:02:36.38 what we miss is persecution is the end of a long sequence 00:02:36.42\00:02:42.79 where first you have to identify the other, 00:02:42.82\00:02:47.33 the other becomes the scapegoat. 00:02:47.36\00:02:49.43 Well, can I quote Ellen White, 00:02:49.46\00:02:51.13 an early writer of our church and I can't memorize it... 00:02:51.17\00:02:53.47 I haven't memorized it exactly. 00:02:53.50\00:02:54.84 But she says, talking about persecution, she says, 00:02:54.87\00:02:56.91 other than, you know, 00:02:56.94\00:02:58.44 people give in other than expose themselves to derision, 00:02:58.47\00:03:03.14 insult, threaten persecution. 00:03:03.18\00:03:05.91 And this is a progression and it usually starts with, 00:03:05.95\00:03:08.18 you know, you're not part of the in crowd. 00:03:08.22\00:03:11.55 And then very cutting insults, 00:03:11.59\00:03:13.99 then maybe legal action and all, but it's a process. 00:03:14.02\00:03:16.69 Othering is not just instantly you're someone else. 00:03:16.73\00:03:19.76 It's a dynamic, so it has to be worked through. 00:03:19.79\00:03:22.70 In American life, we other in many different ways. 00:03:22.73\00:03:26.63 You know, I grew up in New York City. 00:03:26.67\00:03:29.47 I was a big fan of the New York Mets. 00:03:29.50\00:03:32.04 We had a big rivalry. 00:03:32.07\00:03:33.78 I was a Knicks fan, 00:03:33.81\00:03:35.14 rivalry between the Knicks and the Lakers, 00:03:35.18\00:03:37.88 and the Knicks and the Celtics. 00:03:37.91\00:03:39.61 You know, we other based on our allegiance 00:03:39.65\00:03:42.45 to our sports teams. 00:03:42.48\00:03:43.82 Now this may seem trivial, but of course we also other, 00:03:43.85\00:03:47.16 we identify ourselves. 00:03:47.19\00:03:49.06 Oh, I'm a southerner. 00:03:49.09\00:03:50.99 I'm a Yankee. 00:03:51.03\00:03:52.36 I'm a Texan. 00:03:52.39\00:03:53.73 You know, geographically 00:03:53.76\00:03:56.03 and by ethnicity and, of course, 00:03:56.06\00:03:59.23 by nationality, I'm an American. 00:03:59.27\00:04:01.70 So we tend to define our own identity in a way 00:04:01.74\00:04:06.27 that excludes others. 00:04:06.31\00:04:08.84 Well, I mean, as we get into this 00:04:08.88\00:04:10.38 and I agree with you. 00:04:10.41\00:04:11.75 We need to say this, 00:04:11.78\00:04:13.82 if not a good then a natural element to it. 00:04:13.85\00:04:16.58 I think in modern society what we're really searching 00:04:16.62\00:04:19.79 for is a sort of a tribal identity 00:04:19.82\00:04:22.72 which like the tribal identification provided, 00:04:22.76\00:04:25.86 we get it through other means. 00:04:25.89\00:04:27.23 You could be all united by your club identity 00:04:27.26\00:04:30.90 in football so. 00:04:30.93\00:04:33.17 The mark of the beast is the extreme example 00:04:33.20\00:04:35.74 of what happens when we scapegoat 00:04:35.77\00:04:38.34 a group of people, they're the other, 00:04:38.37\00:04:40.64 they're the problem, 00:04:40.68\00:04:42.01 they're the ones who are causing 00:04:42.04\00:04:43.38 all the trouble in the world, and they have to be eliminated. 00:04:43.41\00:04:47.62 Extreme form of othering. 00:04:47.65\00:04:49.65 Now let's contrast that with Matthew 25. 00:04:49.68\00:04:52.55 Matthew 25, Jesus says, 00:04:52.59\00:04:54.29 "And as much as you've done it to the least of these, 00:04:54.32\00:04:56.69 you've done it to Me." 00:04:56.73\00:04:58.43 Now in the parable, the sheep and the goats, 00:04:58.46\00:05:02.16 they didn't realize that they were doing it to Jesus. 00:05:02.20\00:05:04.73 But, of course, Jesus has pulled the curtain aside. 00:05:04.77\00:05:07.64 So now we have no excuse. 00:05:07.67\00:05:09.07 We've read the parable. 00:05:09.10\00:05:10.64 We know that how we treat the other, 00:05:10.67\00:05:14.91 the least of these is the other. 00:05:14.94\00:05:16.34 It's the people that are not one of us. 00:05:16.38\00:05:19.81 Whoever that is, if you see somebody is beneath you, 00:05:19.85\00:05:23.99 they are the other, and how we treat the other. 00:05:24.02\00:05:28.92 Brings them into the world. 00:05:28.96\00:05:30.29 Where is how we're treating Jesus. 00:05:30.33\00:05:34.86 Yeah, but by treating them that way, 00:05:34.90\00:05:37.60 it shows that they are included in God's care. 00:05:37.63\00:05:41.10 They're not on the outside, they're actually in. 00:05:41.14\00:05:44.31 Of course. We brought them in. 00:05:44.34\00:05:45.67 Well, and if you, you know, understand what this, 00:05:45.71\00:05:49.18 Jesus taught this parable, 00:05:49.21\00:05:51.28 this is the standard in the judgment. 00:05:51.31\00:05:54.02 Okay. 00:05:54.05\00:05:55.38 Now Christians, you know, we kind of blindly think, "Oh, 00:05:55.42\00:06:00.36 well, if I've accepted Jesus into my heart, 00:06:00.39\00:06:03.19 you know, and I confess my allegiance 00:06:03.22\00:06:06.29 and my love for Jesus, then I'm saved." 00:06:06.33\00:06:10.60 And that's the end of it. 00:06:10.63\00:06:12.17 I'm saved, I'm a Christian, right? 00:06:12.20\00:06:14.60 Well, Jesus tells us parable, 00:06:14.64\00:06:17.41 the standard in the judgment 00:06:17.44\00:06:20.51 is not whether you accepted Jesus in your heart, 00:06:20.54\00:06:23.35 and I believe in all of that. 00:06:23.38\00:06:24.91 Well, it's a prerequisite. 00:06:24.95\00:06:26.28 But it's how you treat the least of these. 00:06:26.31\00:06:30.55 Do you treat people 00:06:30.59\00:06:32.19 with the kind of respect and courtesy, 00:06:32.22\00:06:35.32 kindness and compassion as if they were Jesus. 00:06:35.36\00:06:41.20 It's a judgment parable. 00:06:41.23\00:06:43.23 That's what it is. 00:06:43.26\00:06:45.53 And it's the opposite of othering, 00:06:45.57\00:06:47.80 because we look, 00:06:47.84\00:06:49.17 we all have various kinds of biases. 00:06:49.20\00:06:53.78 It comes with our cultural baggage, with our heritage. 00:06:53.81\00:06:57.71 It is unavoidable. 00:06:57.75\00:06:59.28 It's not a sin to have the biases. 00:06:59.31\00:07:01.92 The question is, are we going to become conscious of them 00:07:01.95\00:07:05.72 and are we going to consciously seek 00:07:05.75\00:07:09.02 to overcome them. 00:07:09.06\00:07:10.66 Our natural tendency... 00:07:10.69\00:07:12.03 Yes, I'm glad you said that because I think we need 00:07:12.06\00:07:13.43 to overcome or transcend them, maybe is a better word. 00:07:13.46\00:07:17.20 Because you know Paul says that there is in Christ now, 00:07:17.23\00:07:19.80 neither Jew nor Gentile, 00:07:19.83\00:07:21.17 male nor female, slave nor free. 00:07:21.20\00:07:22.77 We're all in the common brotherhood of man, 00:07:22.80\00:07:26.07 and we need to hang on to that thought. 00:07:26.11\00:07:27.78 We also need to reject the politics of othering 00:07:27.81\00:07:31.65 because politics is all about creating enemies, 00:07:31.68\00:07:37.09 creating danger, selling fear. 00:07:37.12\00:07:39.72 You know, the liberals are going to get us, 00:07:39.75\00:07:42.22 the conservatives are going to get us, 00:07:42.26\00:07:44.06 those wacko fundamentalists are going to get us, 00:07:44.09\00:07:46.43 or the immigrants are the problem, 00:07:46.46\00:07:48.43 or the Muslims are the problem, 00:07:48.46\00:07:50.50 you know, somebody else is the problem. 00:07:50.53\00:07:54.67 And you need to vote for me 00:07:54.70\00:07:56.04 because I'm going to deal with the problem. 00:07:56.07\00:07:58.44 We're selling fear and we're selling othering. 00:07:58.47\00:08:02.04 Well, at the moment the situation in the US 00:08:02.08\00:08:03.75 troubles me and I'm not sure anybody has thought it through. 00:08:03.78\00:08:06.78 You know, we're all, but war with the Iranians. 00:08:06.82\00:08:10.02 We're even threatening 00:08:10.05\00:08:11.39 for the first time Saudi Arabia. 00:08:11.42\00:08:13.86 We're talking up China 00:08:13.89\00:08:15.82 as an existential enemy, Russia. 00:08:15.86\00:08:18.93 I mean... North Korea. 00:08:18.96\00:08:20.30 Even Australia got into trouble. 00:08:20.33\00:08:21.80 So, well, but Canada's threat the national security. 00:08:21.83\00:08:26.27 Canadian steel anyway. 00:08:26.30\00:08:27.64 My life's not been very successful, 00:08:27.67\00:08:29.00 but I've even thought several times, 00:08:29.04\00:08:31.47 it's not good on a personal level 00:08:31.51\00:08:32.94 to have a war on too many fronts, 00:08:32.97\00:08:35.34 you can't fight everybody. 00:08:35.38\00:08:37.95 So we're in the process of... 00:08:37.98\00:08:39.38 I've said for years, 00:08:39.41\00:08:40.75 you have to choose your battles. 00:08:40.78\00:08:42.12 Yeah, so we're in the process in the US as a nation, 00:08:42.15\00:08:46.25 like it or not because we don't control it 00:08:46.29\00:08:48.42 individually very much. 00:08:48.46\00:08:49.79 But we're in the process of othering everybody else. 00:08:49.82\00:08:52.39 And the suspicion 00:08:52.43\00:08:54.40 and the antagonisms that come as a result of that 00:08:54.43\00:08:56.93 are very bad and they're not going to play out well, 00:08:56.97\00:08:59.43 both in a secular and religious sense 00:08:59.47\00:09:01.50 because it based on how we see fellow human beings. 00:09:01.54\00:09:07.74 You know, we've spoken in another program 00:09:07.78\00:09:09.11 about the originally Protestant, 00:09:09.14\00:09:12.51 but now generally Christian mindset of the populace. 00:09:12.55\00:09:16.15 But how can that be sustained when enemies here, 00:09:16.18\00:09:18.69 enemies there, others there. 00:09:18.72\00:09:20.39 And I don't think it's by accident 00:09:20.42\00:09:22.29 that within the year 00:09:22.32\00:09:24.56 I've heard open talk from people with authority 00:09:24.59\00:09:27.50 that we might need to do something analogous 00:09:27.53\00:09:29.56 to detaining all the Japanese 00:09:29.60\00:09:31.60 which was a great blot on the US historical record. 00:09:31.63\00:09:35.54 Why would we do it again? 00:09:35.57\00:09:37.47 In what situation will we detain a whole people? 00:09:37.51\00:09:40.74 Look, I'm quite sure that most of our listeners 00:09:40.78\00:09:45.81 who are Christian conservatives 00:09:45.85\00:09:48.55 would reject the notion that they're racist, okay? 00:09:48.58\00:09:52.95 I don't know, you know, 00:09:52.99\00:09:54.39 any of the folks I go to church with, 00:09:54.42\00:09:56.79 nobody's going to say, "Yeah, I'm, you know, I'm racist." 00:09:56.83\00:09:59.79 No, that's the same with religious liberty. 00:09:59.83\00:10:01.16 I never met anyone that says 00:10:01.20\00:10:02.53 they're against religious freedom. 00:10:02.56\00:10:03.90 But how they execute it is very telling off. 00:10:03.93\00:10:05.97 And yet, you know, you and I have both been in circles 00:10:06.00\00:10:10.34 where in, you know, 00:10:10.37\00:10:13.14 the name of national self interest 00:10:13.17\00:10:15.94 and all kinds of political ideas 00:10:15.98\00:10:21.82 we hear very blunt, 00:10:21.85\00:10:25.69 racially insensitive positions taken, 00:10:25.72\00:10:30.26 you know, whether it's about immigrants, 00:10:30.29\00:10:32.23 whether it's about demographics 00:10:32.26\00:10:34.70 and, you know, which population groups are reproducing faster, 00:10:34.73\00:10:39.30 and what we need to do to maintain the, 00:10:39.33\00:10:42.60 you know, white supremacy or... 00:10:42.64\00:10:44.57 That's not usually said that openly, 00:10:44.61\00:10:46.98 but that says something. 00:10:47.01\00:10:48.34 I've heard, I have heard it said quite openly in events 00:10:48.38\00:10:51.65 that you and I have both attended. 00:10:51.68\00:10:53.52 Yeah. Yeah. 00:10:53.55\00:10:54.98 I won't name, you know... 00:10:55.02\00:10:56.35 The climate is changing in really dangerous ways. 00:10:56.38\00:11:00.46 And I don't think even some of the people 00:11:00.49\00:11:02.16 making these statements quite know 00:11:02.19\00:11:03.53 what they're saying, like you say, 00:11:03.56\00:11:04.89 how be anybody will openly acknowledge they're racist. 00:11:04.93\00:11:07.93 But under certain circumstances they'll subtle let slip 00:11:07.96\00:11:11.10 a comment that reveals all. 00:11:11.13\00:11:13.37 Well, look... 00:11:13.40\00:11:14.74 And permission is being given in subtle ways for people 00:11:14.77\00:11:17.77 to say and act on those sentiments. 00:11:17.81\00:11:21.21 But, you know, we've said before racism 00:11:21.24\00:11:24.55 is America's original sin. 00:11:24.58\00:11:27.05 And it strikes many commentators, 00:11:27.08\00:11:32.62 certainly strikes myself that the phenomenon 00:11:32.65\00:11:36.32 of the Trump election 00:11:36.36\00:11:38.89 was a backlash in particular against two aspects 00:11:38.93\00:11:43.33 of the Obama era. 00:11:43.37\00:11:45.70 One certainly was kind of the overreach 00:11:45.73\00:11:48.97 of LGBT rights, 00:11:49.00\00:11:50.74 and then morphing into the emphasis 00:11:50.77\00:11:52.97 on transgender, and the bathroom issue. 00:11:53.01\00:11:56.04 And I think many Americans looked at these trends 00:11:56.08\00:12:00.98 and were horrified. 00:12:01.02\00:12:02.62 And so naturally, despite the fact 00:12:02.65\00:12:06.99 that there was a pretty strong conservative, 00:12:07.02\00:12:10.69 you know, what do they call it, a know Trump movement. 00:12:10.73\00:12:17.63 The fact is, you know, 00:12:17.67\00:12:19.57 between the choices that were presented, 00:12:19.60\00:12:22.20 many Americans chose to go with Trump 00:12:22.24\00:12:25.07 because they couldn't stomach 00:12:25.11\00:12:26.94 more of the liberal social trends 00:12:26.98\00:12:30.85 that were started under Obama. 00:12:30.88\00:12:32.61 But the other aspect of this, 00:12:32.65\00:12:34.62 you know, pendulum swing or backlash was eight years 00:12:34.65\00:12:38.25 of an African-American president. 00:12:38.29\00:12:40.32 And the backlash... 00:12:40.36\00:12:41.79 It was offensive to a certain group. 00:12:41.82\00:12:43.36 It was very offensive. 00:12:43.39\00:12:45.19 And we've seen a considerable degree of racism 00:12:45.23\00:12:48.83 in the backlash. 00:12:48.86\00:12:50.20 And one of the things that, you know, look, 00:12:50.23\00:12:52.03 I explained to liberals 00:12:52.07\00:12:55.07 who don't understand how we got Trump, 00:12:55.10\00:12:57.51 I explain to them why I think we got Trump. 00:12:57.54\00:13:00.11 But I also like to explain to conservatives, guess what? 00:13:00.14\00:13:03.24 There's life after Trump. 00:13:03.28\00:13:05.01 You know, whether he gets four years, or eight years, 00:13:05.05\00:13:08.08 or whatever happens, you know, 00:13:08.12\00:13:09.85 the pendulum is going to swing back the other way. 00:13:09.88\00:13:12.39 And the sharper the swing in one direction, 00:13:12.42\00:13:16.02 you know, there's an equal and opposite reaction... 00:13:16.06\00:13:18.66 To some degree, yes. 00:13:18.69\00:13:20.03 There's no question, 00:13:20.06\00:13:21.40 but it's not as simple as just emphasis at the time. 00:13:21.43\00:13:24.97 There's underlying and you've alluded too. 00:13:25.00\00:13:27.04 There is underlying attitudes that have been along. 00:13:27.07\00:13:29.90 And, yes, I think the apparent victory over historic bias 00:13:29.94\00:13:36.01 with Obama's election actually made things 00:13:36.04\00:13:39.41 worse in a strange way. 00:13:39.45\00:13:41.72 But you know, when it comes to othering, 00:13:41.75\00:13:44.15 and you know, like as I said, 00:13:44.19\00:13:46.42 I like to tie this in with the mark of the beast. 00:13:46.45\00:13:49.19 The problem that most Christians 00:13:49.22\00:13:52.73 overlook is Jesus' 00:13:52.76\00:13:54.80 comments in Matthew 24 about the end times. 00:13:54.83\00:14:00.04 And He suggests that the very ones 00:14:00.07\00:14:02.57 who are going to be othered 00:14:02.60\00:14:04.01 are the Bible believing Christians. 00:14:04.04\00:14:06.27 That's true. 00:14:06.31\00:14:07.64 And unfortunately, they left behind another books 00:14:07.68\00:14:09.94 that sort of spun that in the wrong direction 00:14:09.98\00:14:11.75 because they throw in the secret rapture. 00:14:11.78\00:14:14.25 Well, they say, "We'll all be gone, 00:14:14.28\00:14:15.75 so it won't matter." 00:14:15.78\00:14:17.12 But unfortunately for them 00:14:17.15\00:14:19.79 and unfortunately for God's plan 00:14:19.82\00:14:22.42 to make a strong witness at the end of time, 00:14:22.46\00:14:25.26 we're going to see it through and the othering is a dynamic 00:14:25.29\00:14:28.56 we will have to face. 00:14:28.60\00:14:30.40 We'll take a break now. 00:14:30.43\00:14:31.77 We'll be back and pursue this a little further. 00:14:31.80\00:14:34.04 A biblical prediction perhaps of where we're heading. 00:14:34.07\00:14:37.41 Stay with us. 00:14:37.44\00:14:38.77
