Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:05.83\00:00:07.54 Before the break, 00:00:07.57\00:00:08.90 we were both singing a strong song 00:00:08.94\00:00:10.61 about the need of investigative journalism 00:00:10.64\00:00:15.44 and a free press. 00:00:15.48\00:00:17.38 And it's role not just in civil liberties generally, 00:00:17.41\00:00:19.58 but the greatest liberty, religious freedom. 00:00:19.61\00:00:22.28 Well, you know, 00:00:22.32\00:00:23.65 it's not really an accident of history, Lincoln, 00:00:23.69\00:00:25.55 that we have a bundle of rights in the First Amendment. 00:00:25.59\00:00:29.26 We have no establishment of religion, 00:00:29.29\00:00:31.79 free exercise of religion, free speech, free press, 00:00:31.83\00:00:35.13 and the right of people to petition 00:00:35.16\00:00:37.60 for redress of grievances, and assembly. 00:00:37.63\00:00:41.10 All of these rights are bundled together 00:00:41.14\00:00:43.51 in one sentence, in one amendment. 00:00:43.54\00:00:47.28 And if you think about it, what are we doing here? 00:00:47.31\00:00:49.88 You know, we're exercising both religious freedom, free speech, 00:00:49.91\00:00:53.98 free press, all in one fell swoop 00:00:54.02\00:00:56.18 by recording this program. 00:00:56.22\00:00:57.59 You really can't divide these liberties up too much 00:00:57.62\00:01:01.32 and it's been said 00:01:01.36\00:01:02.69 even by one of our Liberty dinner speakers 00:01:02.72\00:01:04.99 that religious liberty is pretty much the litmus test 00:01:05.03\00:01:07.20 for all the civil liberties. 00:01:07.23\00:01:08.56 It is, absolutely. 00:01:08.60\00:01:09.93 But you can turn it around a little bit. 00:01:09.96\00:01:11.30 If you don't have freedom of the press, 00:01:11.33\00:01:12.70 you're not likely to have freedom of religion. 00:01:12.73\00:01:14.70 Well, that's true too. 00:01:14.74\00:01:16.30 So they exist together 00:01:16.34\00:01:17.67 and even as you were reiterating them, 00:01:17.71\00:01:20.28 you know, it played into my burden 00:01:20.31\00:01:22.21 that we need to understand the stream of history. 00:01:22.24\00:01:24.11 They get back to the Magna Carta. 00:01:24.15\00:01:26.72 Well, and look, 00:01:26.75\00:01:28.25 I think we Americans are rather complacent 00:01:28.28\00:01:32.22 about the state of our liberties 00:01:32.25\00:01:35.22 and they can be lost very quickly. 00:01:35.26\00:01:38.79 You know, Anthony Lewis wrote the definitive book 00:01:38.83\00:01:41.66 "Freedom for the Speech We Hate." 00:01:41.70\00:01:43.53 And when you look at the history 00:01:43.57\00:01:44.93 of free speech in this country, 00:01:44.97\00:01:47.14 free speech has not been very well protected. 00:01:47.17\00:01:51.17 At worse, I'd like to add sum, you can lose it 00:01:51.21\00:01:53.48 and not know you've lost it. 00:01:53.51\00:01:55.34 There's a poem that I love and just a line 00:01:55.38\00:01:56.98 just popped in my mind by Dylan Thomas. 00:01:57.01\00:02:01.45 And he says, at the end he says, 00:02:01.48\00:02:02.82 "Though I sang in my chains like the sea." 00:02:02.85\00:02:05.69 You know, we can sing about from see the shine, 00:02:05.72\00:02:07.62 shining city of the great liberties. 00:02:07.66\00:02:09.02 But maybe to an onlooker in another country 00:02:09.06\00:02:11.26 it's not such... 00:02:11.29\00:02:12.63 I mean I'm not saying it so, 00:02:12.66\00:02:14.00 but it could be where it's not such a free country anymore. 00:02:14.03\00:02:16.70 Well, look that's, you know, my quick listing. 00:02:16.73\00:02:19.53 In America we're only free as long as we're relevant. 00:02:19.57\00:02:22.60 You know, as long as the powers that be don't care about, 00:02:22.64\00:02:25.17 you know, what you're doing, and what you're saying, yeah, 00:02:25.21\00:02:27.51 you can, you're free to say whatever you want. 00:02:27.54\00:02:29.81 But if you become a threat, 00:02:29.84\00:02:31.18 if you become sufficiently influential 00:02:31.21\00:02:33.42 that you're taken seriously, watch out, 00:02:33.45\00:02:36.52 you know, somebody is going to try to take you down. 00:02:36.55\00:02:38.59 Yeah. 00:02:38.62\00:02:39.95 And that may not be because 00:02:39.99\00:02:41.32 there's anything structurally changed, 00:02:41.36\00:02:44.46 but it's the dynamic of forces 00:02:44.49\00:02:47.43 that using the existing system can restrict you, 00:02:47.46\00:02:49.66 it's always been so, and money, and large organizations 00:02:49.70\00:02:54.17 have long trod on individual freedoms. 00:02:54.20\00:02:56.50 And that's part of the reason we're pushing back. 00:02:56.54\00:02:58.64 You know, one of the things that I say about bias 00:02:58.67\00:03:01.64 in the press, you know. 00:03:01.68\00:03:03.11 And like you I read widely. 00:03:03.14\00:03:06.92 Well, first of all bias is not a bad thing. 00:03:06.95\00:03:10.12 The role of the press is to criticize 00:03:10.15\00:03:13.72 the existing powers that be. 00:03:13.76\00:03:16.29 The press is not doing its job, if it's just a rubber stamp 00:03:16.32\00:03:19.83 and going rah-rah to who is ever in power. 00:03:19.86\00:03:22.90 It has to be finding fault, that's its job, 00:03:22.93\00:03:26.33 that's what we need it to do. 00:03:26.37\00:03:28.90 If you're looking for bias, 00:03:28.94\00:03:31.01 look at why the stories being told. 00:03:31.04\00:03:35.21 Not all of the story is full of false facts 00:03:35.24\00:03:38.31 or it's fake news. 00:03:38.35\00:03:39.78 No, the story is likely, 00:03:39.81\00:03:41.18 you know, in the responsible journalism, 00:03:41.22\00:03:43.49 they have very good fact checkers, 00:03:43.52\00:03:45.69 and editorial policies, and what have you, 00:03:45.72\00:03:48.49 and they're very careful. 00:03:48.52\00:03:51.06 You know, the major New York Times Post 00:03:51.09\00:03:53.73 and, you know, the major magazines and all 00:03:53.76\00:03:56.13 are very good at making sure 00:03:56.16\00:03:58.30 that they get their facts straight. 00:03:58.33\00:03:59.67 The question is 00:03:59.70\00:04:01.04 why are they telling this story? 00:04:01.07\00:04:03.00 Why did they choose this story rather than a different story? 00:04:03.04\00:04:06.44 That's where you'll see elements of bias coming. 00:04:06.47\00:04:09.54 But a lot of what is happening now 00:04:09.58\00:04:12.01 is not just bias, 00:04:12.05\00:04:13.38 it's almost not fake in the sense, 00:04:13.42\00:04:17.09 but it's a narrative 00:04:17.12\00:04:18.45 that's based on some lies basically. 00:04:18.49\00:04:23.99 There are stories that's made up, made up. 00:04:24.03\00:04:27.53 Not all the facts, but the premises are made up, 00:04:27.56\00:04:30.77 premise and then convenient facts 00:04:30.80\00:04:33.54 have been accumulated to tell it. 00:04:33.57\00:04:36.71 And I... 00:04:36.74\00:04:38.07 Since we spoke about it before, Fox will do that. 00:04:38.11\00:04:40.91 And I watch Fox, I have no burden against them, 00:04:40.94\00:04:43.61 to me it's entertainment. 00:04:43.65\00:04:44.98 It tells me what other groups are saying, 00:04:45.01\00:04:47.42 but I've been watching 00:04:47.45\00:04:48.78 on some of the recent developments 00:04:48.82\00:04:50.15 that it's particularly was on the discussion groups. 00:04:50.19\00:04:53.79 I see them discuss, 00:04:53.82\00:04:55.22 and then I turn on another one of any other channels. 00:04:55.26\00:04:59.43 And it's like they're talking about the same real events 00:04:59.46\00:05:02.26 that I know half a bit. 00:05:02.30\00:05:04.27 But this gets us to our core concept. 00:05:04.30\00:05:06.74 And perhaps it's just hit me, 00:05:06.77\00:05:08.10 perhaps a big problem in the US is confusing news 00:05:08.14\00:05:10.57 with entertainment. 00:05:10.61\00:05:12.71 Well, we want to be titillated not informed. 00:05:12.74\00:05:15.28 But this is a problem, it goes back decades where, 00:05:15.31\00:05:19.15 you know, in order for television news 00:05:19.18\00:05:21.52 for example to survive, 00:05:21.55\00:05:23.45 it has to get the ratings and it's all about the ratings. 00:05:23.49\00:05:26.49 And to get the ratings, you have to entertain. 00:05:26.52\00:05:29.06 So what entertains, you know, the latest, 00:05:29.09\00:05:32.09 you know, car crash or, you know, some disaster. 00:05:32.13\00:05:36.26 And so the thing, 00:05:36.30\00:05:37.63 but it's a matter of public record 00:05:37.67\00:05:40.67 that Donald Trump received 00:05:40.70\00:05:43.41 something like a billion dollars worth 00:05:43.44\00:05:45.87 of free media coverage during the election campaign. 00:05:45.91\00:05:49.51 That unquestionably was a huge contribution 00:05:49.54\00:05:54.05 to his political success. 00:05:54.08\00:05:56.12 Now why did he get all that press coverage 00:05:56.15\00:05:58.59 because he was entertaining. 00:05:58.62\00:06:00.39 He was interesting. 00:06:00.42\00:06:01.76 Okay, he was more entertaining 00:06:01.79\00:06:03.49 than, you know, George Bush, or Marco Rubio, 00:06:03.53\00:06:06.53 or you know any one of a number of other people 00:06:06.56\00:06:09.23 who, you know, arguably 00:06:09.26\00:06:11.17 were more experienced politically 00:06:11.20\00:06:12.97 and may have been better qualified. 00:06:13.00\00:06:14.90 You know, but the focus is on... 00:06:14.94\00:06:16.27 You can throw in arguably. 00:06:16.30\00:06:18.47 Well, I mean, it's just the facts. 00:06:18.51\00:06:22.68 Look I'm not trying... 00:06:22.71\00:06:24.05 Doesn't mean the president was incompetent or is, 00:06:24.08\00:06:27.28 that's irrelevant, but he was not a politician. 00:06:27.32\00:06:29.38 Right. He was not a politician. 00:06:29.42\00:06:31.05 And they were experienced. 00:06:31.09\00:06:32.85 So, you know, I think the media is undergoing 00:06:32.89\00:06:36.46 some self-criticism certainly. 00:06:36.49\00:06:39.89 But it brings us back to our core question of, 00:06:39.93\00:06:45.33 you know, how do we understand truth 00:06:45.37\00:06:47.97 in a post modern age 00:06:48.00\00:06:49.80 when everything that goes on around us, 00:06:49.84\00:06:52.54 we're, you know, we're having a hard time 00:06:52.57\00:06:55.18 getting to the actual facts because of the spin. 00:06:55.21\00:06:58.75 And we're not even willing most of us to listen to facts 00:06:58.78\00:07:03.05 that conflict with our preconceived ideas. 00:07:03.08\00:07:05.82 And that's a real problem. 00:07:05.85\00:07:08.22 Yes. 00:07:08.26\00:07:09.59 But I was about to say 00:07:09.62\00:07:10.96 what I do and I hope other people do. 00:07:10.99\00:07:12.53 When I listen to anything, that's not just news 00:07:12.56\00:07:14.66 or read a book, I'm constantly... 00:07:14.70\00:07:16.70 I read facts and figures, I run it past the ones 00:07:16.73\00:07:19.00 that I already know that I verify them in my mind. 00:07:19.03\00:07:21.44 I'm fact checking. 00:07:21.47\00:07:22.80 Did you do that when you read? 00:07:22.84\00:07:24.17 Well. 00:07:24.21\00:07:25.54 But if you don't have the background knowledge 00:07:25.57\00:07:27.34 or have never tried to acquire it, 00:07:27.38\00:07:30.21 how would someone today know up from down. 00:07:30.25\00:07:34.22 And it does struck me, the Bible over and over again 00:07:34.25\00:07:38.09 says that, "The very elect will be deceived 00:07:38.12\00:07:40.39 at the end of time." 00:07:40.42\00:07:41.76 And this has to be part of this dynamic. 00:07:41.79\00:07:44.46 You can't believe your eyes. 00:07:44.49\00:07:46.09 And, of course, videos can be manipulated, not just words, 00:07:46.13\00:07:50.57 you know, and there's some joke things 00:07:50.60\00:07:53.07 that I've seen online 00:07:53.10\00:07:54.44 where they'll have public figures 00:07:54.47\00:07:55.80 saying something grotesque, 00:07:55.84\00:07:57.17 and you can micro edit video and sound of them. 00:07:57.21\00:08:00.61 So quite literally most people know now, 00:08:00.64\00:08:04.08 what you see isn't what you get. 00:08:04.11\00:08:05.85 It can be manipulated in gross ways, not routinely, 00:08:05.88\00:08:10.99 but there's always that possibility. 00:08:11.02\00:08:12.69 And without knowledge to compare 00:08:12.72\00:08:14.56 to what they have been, what they're saying. 00:08:14.59\00:08:16.86 I think people are not critical thinkers 00:08:16.89\00:08:19.19 as in the large, 00:08:19.23\00:08:20.66 of course, there's wonderful exceptions. 00:08:20.70\00:08:22.56 But overall, modern society 00:08:22.60\00:08:24.83 and in particularly the United States 00:08:24.87\00:08:26.37 is one of the most modern countries 00:08:26.40\00:08:28.17 is in a bad situation. 00:08:28.20\00:08:30.54 I do a mini evangelistic series based on prophecy. 00:08:30.57\00:08:34.48 And at the beginning, 00:08:34.51\00:08:35.84 one of my premises is to tell people 00:08:35.88\00:08:39.28 the problem is not that you're skeptical, 00:08:39.31\00:08:41.75 it's that you're not skeptical enough, 00:08:41.78\00:08:44.85 because as you just quoted from Jesus, 00:08:44.89\00:08:48.09 "At the end of time, even the very elect 00:08:48.12\00:08:51.46 will be subject to deception." 00:08:51.49\00:08:53.16 I think one of the elements 00:08:53.19\00:08:54.73 that is very dangerous for us as Christians, 00:08:54.76\00:08:57.50 we're very law and order oriented. 00:08:57.53\00:09:01.14 So for example, there's a lot of current controversy 00:09:01.17\00:09:04.71 over American immigration policies. 00:09:04.74\00:09:06.84 I'm not going to get into the substance of it, 00:09:06.88\00:09:08.81 but what I see from conservative Christians 00:09:08.84\00:09:12.75 is a very one sided approach 00:09:12.78\00:09:17.12 to the issue, it's law. 00:09:17.15\00:09:19.39 You know, if this is what the law is 00:09:19.42\00:09:22.29 and either you're on the right side of it 00:09:22.32\00:09:24.29 and there's so many dimensions. 00:09:24.33\00:09:25.66 And it seems to me, 00:09:25.69\00:09:27.03 you can still respect the government as the law giver 00:09:27.06\00:09:30.83 and it's chosen to have this law 00:09:30.87\00:09:33.57 for whatever reason. 00:09:33.60\00:09:34.94 But we can morally object to how it's applied 00:09:34.97\00:09:39.47 if people are being mistreated in the name of that law, 00:09:39.51\00:09:42.98 we object to the mistreatment, 00:09:43.01\00:09:44.65 that's not ever to be acceptable to a Christian. 00:09:44.68\00:09:46.98 Well, and there's a lot, 00:09:47.02\00:09:48.35 certainly there's a lot of dimensions 00:09:48.38\00:09:49.72 to the whole immigration issue. 00:09:49.75\00:09:51.09 Why are people fleeing? 00:09:51.12\00:09:52.45 What are the social issues? 00:09:52.49\00:09:53.82 What's the geopolitical? 00:09:53.86\00:09:55.19 What is the United States influence been 00:09:55.22\00:09:56.59 in Mexico and Central America? 00:09:56.62\00:09:58.89 What about, you know, the drug problem, 00:09:58.93\00:10:00.93 this a push and pull? 00:10:00.96\00:10:02.30 You know, it's American demand that creates... 00:10:02.33\00:10:04.57 To create facts. 00:10:04.60\00:10:05.93 The fact that we need another program. 00:10:05.97\00:10:07.67 The facts are, more people are leaving 00:10:07.70\00:10:09.10 than are coming in at the moment. 00:10:09.14\00:10:10.87 Yes. Well, there's that too. 00:10:10.91\00:10:12.97 But freedom of the press 00:10:13.01\00:10:14.88 is so central to religious freedom. 00:10:14.91\00:10:17.55 And frankly, I fear for our ability to really see 00:10:17.58\00:10:22.95 what is truth and to grasp reality. 00:10:22.98\00:10:25.79 Standing before Governor Pilate, 00:10:28.92\00:10:31.33 Jesus calmly and in a dignified way, 00:10:31.36\00:10:33.66 in spite of the blood and the gore 00:10:33.70\00:10:36.63 dripping down His forehead said, 00:10:36.67\00:10:39.10 "I'm the Way, the Life, and the Truth." 00:10:39.13\00:10:42.30 And Pilate said, "What is truth?" 00:10:42.34\00:10:46.14 Most people that read that just think of it 00:10:46.17\00:10:47.64 as a narrative. 00:10:47.68\00:10:49.01 But he was asking a deeply philosophical question. 00:10:49.04\00:10:53.01 And I believe in many ways, in our modern world 00:10:53.05\00:10:55.75 we're seeing the demise of truth 00:10:55.78\00:10:58.22 or at least an understanding of it. 00:10:58.25\00:11:01.29 Is the media telling us the truth? 00:11:01.32\00:11:03.49 Can we find the truth? 00:11:03.53\00:11:04.96 Would we know it if we found it? 00:11:04.99\00:11:07.83 I think unless one realizes that God's way 00:11:07.86\00:11:10.63 is the only way to truth that He is indeed 00:11:10.67\00:11:13.70 the epitome of truth, and we seek Him, 00:11:13.74\00:11:16.81 and like Solomon an understanding of his way, 00:11:16.84\00:11:19.71 and the ability to define between truth and error, 00:11:19.74\00:11:23.65 light and dark, we'll be lost. 00:11:23.68\00:11:26.58 We will go into a moral and intellectual darkness. 00:11:26.61\00:11:31.39 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:11:31.42\00:11:35.22
