Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:05.53\00:00:07.20 Before the break with the guest, 00:00:07.24\00:00:09.60 Attorney Alan Reinach, I nearly said your full title, 00:00:09.64\00:00:15.31 Church State Council from California. 00:00:15.34\00:00:17.21 We were talking about greatness. 00:00:17.25\00:00:18.98 Indeed. What makes America great again. 00:00:19.01\00:00:21.42 Yeah, we all want to be part of greatness, 00:00:21.45\00:00:23.62 be on the winning team, to be part of a great nation. 00:00:23.65\00:00:26.55 And I think, at the moment, 00:00:26.59\00:00:28.82 the United States is legitimately reaching 00:00:28.86\00:00:31.43 toward what makes us great. 00:00:31.46\00:00:34.50 Unfortunately, a few people that exemplify 00:00:34.53\00:00:36.77 some of the less great aspects, 00:00:36.80\00:00:38.13 they have come out of the woodwork. 00:00:38.17\00:00:39.50 But greatness is not a bad thing to aim at, is it? 00:00:39.53\00:00:42.17 Well, look, we certainly have seen 00:00:42.20\00:00:44.74 in the last election cycle 00:00:44.77\00:00:46.64 that it's great political rhetoric. 00:00:46.68\00:00:49.74 You know, it's very effective political rhetoric. 00:00:49.78\00:00:52.31 You know, there's no ifs, ands, or buts about that. 00:00:52.35\00:00:55.48 And just like we can. 00:00:55.52\00:00:56.85 I mean, most political slogans, 00:00:56.89\00:00:58.22 they were very designed to unleash potential. 00:00:58.25\00:01:00.99 But let's put this back in the prophetic setting 00:01:01.02\00:01:04.23 because in Revelation 13, 00:01:04.26\00:01:06.93 the same country that has these wonderful 00:01:06.96\00:01:10.17 aspirations of separation of powers, of the rule of law, 00:01:10.20\00:01:14.24 of respect for civil and religious freedom, 00:01:14.27\00:01:17.07 its own sense of pride in its Christian heritage 00:01:17.11\00:01:22.48 and its greatness ultimately leads it 00:01:22.51\00:01:25.41 to becoming a persecuting power 00:01:25.45\00:01:27.62 and enforcing the mark of the beast. 00:01:27.65\00:01:29.58 Now how do you get from these wonderful 00:01:29.62\00:01:32.12 lamb-like principles 00:01:32.15\00:01:33.62 to what can only be described 00:01:33.66\00:01:36.32 as dragon-like satanic behavior? 00:01:36.36\00:01:39.73 And I think that what it is clearly 00:01:39.76\00:01:42.60 in the pages of Scripture 00:01:42.63\00:01:45.20 is this blending of faith and patriotism. 00:01:45.23\00:01:51.14 More around political power, yeah. 00:01:51.17\00:01:53.07 It's a pride, 00:01:53.11\00:01:54.44 and it's a blending of civil and religious authority 00:01:54.48\00:01:59.35 because as persecution has to do 00:01:59.38\00:02:02.12 with the government making value judgments 00:02:02.15\00:02:04.79 between religions 00:02:04.82\00:02:06.79 which has always been forbidden to our government 00:02:06.82\00:02:10.19 to make value judgment. 00:02:10.23\00:02:11.56 Because it's so fraught. 00:02:11.59\00:02:13.16 Different governments are going to decide differently 00:02:13.19\00:02:15.20 of what is truth and error. 00:02:15.23\00:02:16.56 They're not competent. 00:02:16.60\00:02:17.93 The Supreme Court in the case of Trump versus Hawaii upheld 00:02:17.97\00:02:21.20 the so-called Muslim ban, 00:02:21.24\00:02:24.11 totally ignoring that we clearly had made 00:02:24.14\00:02:27.64 a value judgment as between 00:02:27.68\00:02:30.68 the majority religion, Christianity, 00:02:30.71\00:02:33.48 and holding people from Islamic countries suspect. 00:02:33.52\00:02:38.35 Yeah. 00:02:38.39\00:02:39.72 You know, these are valued judgments. 00:02:39.75\00:02:43.26 This is something that our government 00:02:43.29\00:02:45.73 is constitutionally prohibited from doing. 00:02:45.76\00:02:48.66 Where this eventually leads whether you agree 00:02:48.70\00:02:50.77 with the outcome of Trump against Hawaii or not, 00:02:50.80\00:02:53.94 where this eventually leads is 00:02:53.97\00:02:56.10 to the end result of persecution. 00:02:56.14\00:02:59.01 Yeah. 00:02:59.04\00:03:00.38 And yeah, they're hedging their bets. 00:03:00.41\00:03:03.04 We know that there's an attempt 00:03:03.08\00:03:05.01 to categorize an entire religious group. 00:03:05.05\00:03:08.98 And today, we might be comfortable 00:03:09.02\00:03:10.45 with that group, 00:03:10.49\00:03:11.82 but the political wind could shift, 00:03:11.85\00:03:14.22 and it'll be another group that's seen as inimical 00:03:14.26\00:03:16.29 to the government's interests. 00:03:16.32\00:03:17.66 So we don't want to go down that trail. 00:03:17.69\00:03:19.39 We've got a history of war within the Christian history. 00:03:19.43\00:03:25.40 In our own country, you know, in recent years, 00:03:25.43\00:03:28.57 we have this small group called Westboro Baptist Church 00:03:28.60\00:03:31.47 that goes and pickets funerals. 00:03:31.51\00:03:33.41 There's an article on that. 00:03:33.44\00:03:34.78 You know, and they're extremely hostile to gays 00:03:34.81\00:03:38.01 and what have you, and are they representative 00:03:38.05\00:03:41.22 of the larger Christian community? 00:03:41.25\00:03:42.58 No. 00:03:42.62\00:03:43.95 Is Isis representative of the entire Muslim community? 00:03:43.99\00:03:46.52 No. 00:03:46.55\00:03:47.89 Are they a real problem, a real threat? 00:03:47.92\00:03:50.33 Of course they are. 00:03:50.36\00:03:52.23 But you know, to say 00:03:52.26\00:03:53.60 that all Muslims are terrorists, 00:03:53.63\00:03:56.56 I mean, I had a case... 00:03:56.60\00:03:57.93 No, that's clearly a gross overreach. 00:03:57.97\00:04:00.27 I had a case recently, Lincoln, where an Armenian Orthodox 00:04:00.30\00:04:06.31 Christian was mistaken for Muslim 00:04:06.34\00:04:08.64 and was harassed and run out of his job 00:04:08.68\00:04:11.98 because they were, you know... 00:04:12.01\00:04:13.55 And the same with the Sikhs, 00:04:13.58\00:04:14.92 as you know, more commonly confused, yeah. 00:04:14.95\00:04:16.92 Yeah. 00:04:16.95\00:04:18.29 And yet the Sikhs have their own history. 00:04:18.32\00:04:20.96 I asked somebody from India recently. 00:04:20.99\00:04:25.39 "You know, how do you see the Sikhs in India?" 00:04:25.43\00:04:27.23 And I knew the answer because I've been 00:04:27.26\00:04:29.30 to the Sikh Golden Temple in India, 00:04:29.33\00:04:31.27 and just a few months before, 00:04:31.30\00:04:33.54 there was a rebellion in the north, 00:04:33.57\00:04:36.07 and the Indian Army 00:04:36.10\00:04:38.97 actually invaded their temple, profaned it. 00:04:39.01\00:04:41.64 Oh, really? 00:04:41.68\00:04:43.01 And that led directly to Indira Gandhi 00:04:43.04\00:04:45.01 being assassinated by one of the Sikhs. 00:04:45.05\00:04:46.51 Okay, this goes back a few years. 00:04:46.55\00:04:47.95 So this person said, "Oh, yes. 00:04:47.98\00:04:49.85 We see that was quite militaristic. 00:04:49.88\00:04:52.35 But not in the same way as Islam 00:04:52.39\00:04:55.86 and the Islamic actions." 00:04:55.89\00:04:57.79 So it's not good for one group to be mixed 00:04:57.83\00:05:00.26 in with the other in this sort of catch-all prejudice. 00:05:00.30\00:05:05.17 And so we've got to defend all groups, 00:05:05.20\00:05:07.67 as you know, I'll reiterate it. 00:05:07.70\00:05:09.94 Religious Liberty is for all, or ultimately, it's for none. 00:05:09.97\00:05:13.68 I see it as you just can't start carving away 00:05:13.71\00:05:16.88 a few religious groups that you're suspicious 00:05:16.91\00:05:19.28 of even with good cause. 00:05:19.31\00:05:21.68 We have to... 00:05:21.72\00:05:23.05 If we're going to talk about America's greatness, 00:05:23.08\00:05:25.19 we have to talk about... 00:05:25.22\00:05:26.96 It was pluralism. It was pluralistic. 00:05:26.99\00:05:28.32 Overcoming America's original sin. 00:05:28.36\00:05:31.56 America's original sin is racism. 00:05:31.59\00:05:34.36 It was against the Native Americans, 00:05:34.40\00:05:36.77 and our treatment of Native Americans, 00:05:36.80\00:05:38.67 by the way, has also been characterized as genocide, 00:05:38.70\00:05:42.37 that we're a post genocidal nation, 00:05:42.40\00:05:45.64 which is a pretty shocking thought. 00:05:45.67\00:05:47.94 But, you know, how we deal with the issues of race, 00:05:47.98\00:05:53.05 with minorities, with, 00:05:53.08\00:05:55.98 you know, whether it's discrimination 00:05:56.02\00:05:57.65 on the basis of national origin, 00:05:57.69\00:05:59.49 or anything else, this is America's original sin. 00:05:59.52\00:06:04.23 And if we want, if we aspire to true greatness, 00:06:04.26\00:06:09.03 we have to confront our original sin. 00:06:09.06\00:06:11.33 You know, the Bible, 00:06:11.37\00:06:13.37 of course speaks to what is really great. 00:06:13.40\00:06:15.10 Solomon was great 00:06:15.14\00:06:17.24 because he knew God and could understand 00:06:17.27\00:06:19.04 the difference between good and evil. 00:06:19.07\00:06:20.74 And Ellen White, 00:06:20.78\00:06:22.24 writing to Seventh-day Adventist once, 00:06:22.28\00:06:24.98 actually to editors, she says, "Call no man great 00:06:25.01\00:06:27.65 who hasn't chosen God and His ways." 00:06:27.68\00:06:31.79 And I think of Jesus' statement. 00:06:31.82\00:06:34.06 "He who would be great among you, 00:06:34.09\00:06:35.52 let him be as a servant." 00:06:35.56\00:06:36.89 Yes, but I think, I mean, 00:06:36.93\00:06:39.23 I can make a good argument that ultimately, 00:06:39.26\00:06:41.23 America's greatness, 00:06:41.26\00:06:43.26 the greatest part of its story 'cause it's not all great, 00:06:43.30\00:06:45.73 but its greatness derived from its Christian morality 00:06:45.77\00:06:49.64 put into action, a good nation. 00:06:49.67\00:06:52.91 Well, but if we're going to talk about America 00:06:52.94\00:06:56.44 in terms of being Christian, 00:06:56.48\00:06:58.55 I think we have to distinguish 00:06:58.58\00:07:00.22 between the Christian people and the nation. 00:07:00.25\00:07:05.42 So to me, kind of the sine qua non of Christianity 00:07:05.45\00:07:09.89 is the Sermon on the Mount. 00:07:09.92\00:07:11.26 But I don't think that 00:07:11.29\00:07:12.63 there are many Christians among us, 00:07:12.66\00:07:15.40 you know, I hesitate to say any, 00:07:15.43\00:07:17.47 who would contend that America as a Christian nation 00:07:17.50\00:07:22.04 should vigorously implement the teachings of the Sermon 00:07:22.07\00:07:25.37 on the Mount, 00:07:25.41\00:07:26.74 that in our relations to other countries, 00:07:26.78\00:07:28.48 we should turn the other cheek, for example. 00:07:28.51\00:07:29.84 Well, now you are getting into what I've... 00:07:29.88\00:07:31.65 The government was designedly secular 00:07:31.68\00:07:35.18 for any number of reasons. 00:07:35.22\00:07:37.59 But in this regard, I think, out of respect for religion. 00:07:37.62\00:07:41.92 But it worked well 00:07:41.96\00:07:43.73 when a critical mass of the population 00:07:43.76\00:07:49.53 was informed by a Christian morality, 00:07:49.56\00:07:51.43 a Christian sensibility. 00:07:51.47\00:07:54.34 I mean, there's any number of statements 00:07:54.37\00:07:55.80 that the framers expected that. 00:07:55.84\00:07:58.64 Obviously, we don't buy 00:07:58.67\00:08:00.01 into the spurious historical argument 00:08:00.04\00:08:02.28 that it was intended to be a Christian nation structurally 00:08:02.31\00:08:05.65 and governmentally, and so on. 00:08:05.68\00:08:07.08 Not at all. 00:08:07.12\00:08:08.45 In the founding generation, 00:08:08.48\00:08:11.12 there was acknowledged by many of the leaders, 00:08:11.15\00:08:13.99 religious freedom for Jews, for Catholics, for Muslims, 00:08:14.02\00:08:17.33 you know, that we had this broad concept. 00:08:17.36\00:08:20.53 And really, this kind of, I call it live and let live. 00:08:20.56\00:08:24.13 You know, we all have the right to live 00:08:24.17\00:08:28.20 according to our own values, 00:08:28.24\00:08:30.61 our own beliefs, not just to have them 00:08:30.64\00:08:32.97 but to live according to them as long 00:08:33.01\00:08:35.14 as we're living in peace 00:08:35.18\00:08:36.51 and not infringing on the rights of the others. 00:08:36.54\00:08:37.88 And I've got to be politically, at least, historically honest. 00:08:37.91\00:08:40.38 I believe that live and let live derived 00:08:40.42\00:08:43.59 from the Enlightenment 00:08:43.62\00:08:44.95 secular principles, and from deism. 00:08:44.99\00:08:47.82 Well, I think the Golden Rule 00:08:47.86\00:08:49.49 had something to do with it also. 00:08:49.52\00:08:50.89 Well, that's why 00:08:50.93\00:08:52.26 the good Christians went along with it. 00:08:52.29\00:08:53.63 But I don't think it came from that. 00:08:53.66\00:08:55.00 What I mean is it was an outside force 00:08:55.03\00:08:57.87 that spread that and it took root in the US 00:08:57.90\00:09:00.80 and it's worked to the advantage of old faith 00:09:00.84\00:09:03.81 and of religious freedom. 00:09:03.84\00:09:05.17 Well, if I can express a little different view... 00:09:05.21\00:09:08.04 Of course, you can. 00:09:08.08\00:09:09.41 You know, look, Jefferson was expressing, 00:09:09.44\00:09:14.52 you know, the broad understanding 00:09:14.55\00:09:16.65 when he talks about, 00:09:16.69\00:09:18.19 you know, God-given inalienable rights 00:09:18.22\00:09:20.49 endowed by our Creator. 00:09:20.52\00:09:22.76 You know, he wasn't expressing 00:09:22.79\00:09:24.33 a pure enlightenment rationalist view. 00:09:24.36\00:09:27.30 I could say the influence. And he wasn't a pure Christian. 00:09:27.33\00:09:30.60 No, he wasn't, which is why I say, 00:09:30.63\00:09:33.07 you know, he is writing for the society, 00:09:33.10\00:09:36.37 not for himself. 00:09:36.40\00:09:37.74 But he was the moral hero, 00:09:37.77\00:09:39.11 I think, one of the moral heroes 00:09:39.14\00:09:40.48 of this new experiment, there's no question. 00:09:40.51\00:09:41.84 You know, so there was a shared... 00:09:41.88\00:09:43.21 You've said it earlier in the show, 00:09:43.24\00:09:44.91 Protestant ethos 00:09:44.95\00:09:46.72 that founded our culture of rights, 00:09:46.75\00:09:49.48 our respect for law, etcetera, was based on Protestant ethos. 00:09:49.52\00:09:54.36 No, absolutely. 00:09:54.39\00:09:55.82 I mean... 00:09:55.86\00:09:57.19 We're just differing on some terminology, 00:09:57.23\00:09:59.49 but religion has been the bedrock, 00:09:59.53\00:10:03.30 social environment that this country, 00:10:03.33\00:10:05.17 the US became great on. 00:10:05.20\00:10:07.24 But self-interest is not a Christian value. 00:10:07.27\00:10:11.31 You know, selfishness is kind of, 00:10:11.34\00:10:15.58 in some sense, the original sin 00:10:15.61\00:10:17.41 that the scripture really rails against. 00:10:17.45\00:10:20.52 "Self-sacrifice, taking up your cross, 00:10:20.55\00:10:22.72 and following after me," Jesus says. 00:10:22.75\00:10:24.89 You know, that's kind of core to the gospel. 00:10:24.92\00:10:27.76 So if America aspires to be great, 00:10:27.79\00:10:30.99 I think humility is in order 00:10:31.03\00:10:33.46 and return to some of these first principles 00:10:33.50\00:10:35.76 of the rule of law, separation of powers, 00:10:35.80\00:10:38.27 of respect for civil and religious freedom. 00:10:38.30\00:10:40.87 I often spend time comparing notes 00:10:44.27\00:10:46.74 with my predecessor, Clifford Goldstein, 00:10:46.78\00:10:49.48 and I know that on one occasion, 00:10:49.51\00:10:50.95 I hit pay dirt with him when I mentioned a poem called, 00:10:50.98\00:10:53.35 "Ozymandias," king of kings, and it's a poem that says, 00:10:53.38\00:10:57.75 "Out in the desert, abandoned by all, 00:10:57.79\00:11:00.46 and with the drifting sands around, 00:11:00.49\00:11:02.19 there's a huge visage, 00:11:02.22\00:11:03.56 and underneath a sign, it says, 'I am Ozymandias, 00:11:03.59\00:11:06.23 king of kings, you know, fear and trembling,'" 00:11:06.26\00:11:09.13 And it says, "Nothing stirs but the desert birds." 00:11:09.16\00:11:12.03 When we talk about greatness, 00:11:12.07\00:11:14.00 something like that I think puts it 00:11:14.04\00:11:15.57 in a certain perspective because what is great. 00:11:15.60\00:11:19.77 We've toned down statues all over the US of great heroes 00:11:19.81\00:11:23.21 of the wrong cause in the past. 00:11:23.24\00:11:25.31 And others, like Saddam Hussein, 00:11:25.35\00:11:27.02 not only the statue but the very existence 00:11:27.05\00:11:29.45 has been snuffed out by revisionism. 00:11:29.48\00:11:31.99 Ellen White, speaking to Seventh-day Adventists says, 00:11:32.02\00:11:34.46 "Call no man great 00:11:34.49\00:11:36.42 who hasn't had the wisdom to choose loyalty to God." 00:11:36.46\00:11:39.96 That, at the end of the day, 00:11:40.00\00:11:41.56 is all that can constitute true greatness. 00:11:41.60\00:11:44.70 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:11:44.73\00:11:47.80
