Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:28.72\00:00:30.96 This is your program bringing you news, 00:00:30.99\00:00:33.50 views, information, 00:00:33.53\00:00:35.30 and a lot of analysis on religious liberty events 00:00:35.33\00:00:38.60 in the US and around the world. 00:00:38.63\00:00:40.50 My name is Lincoln Steed, 00:00:40.54\00:00:41.97 and I'm Editor of Liberty magazine, 00:00:42.00\00:00:43.74 and my guest on this program is lawyer and my friend, 00:00:43.77\00:00:47.08 I know sometimes 00:00:47.11\00:00:48.44 those might be in conflict, Alan Reinach. 00:00:48.48\00:00:51.35 I'm not your lawyer, but I am you know friend. 00:00:51.38\00:00:53.42 No, you're a good, good guy, and you're executive director 00:00:53.45\00:00:56.75 of the California-based Church State Council. 00:00:56.79\00:01:01.09 Let's talk about something really exciting 00:01:01.12\00:01:04.69 and something that will get everybody hot 00:01:04.73\00:01:06.09 and bothered at least in the United States. 00:01:06.13\00:01:08.26 There's a lot of talk lately 00:01:08.30\00:01:09.63 about making America great again. 00:01:09.66\00:01:11.33 Indeed. 00:01:11.37\00:01:12.70 I love history, and you know, I could go back in history, 00:01:12.73\00:01:15.07 and America's been "great" sometimes, 00:01:15.10\00:01:17.64 sometimes you can put the quotation marks underneath, 00:01:17.67\00:01:20.01 some as lowercase G, sometimes capital. 00:01:20.04\00:01:23.58 It's been a mixed bag, 00:01:23.61\00:01:24.95 but, you know, what is this greatness 00:01:24.98\00:01:27.15 that the people are hungering for 00:01:27.18\00:01:29.05 because there's no question, 00:01:29.08\00:01:31.05 this is tapped into something deep 00:01:31.09\00:01:33.09 in the United States culture I think. 00:01:33.12\00:01:35.99 Well, it certainly has, Lincoln. 00:01:36.02\00:01:38.86 But think 00:01:38.89\00:01:40.23 that it is very indistinct, very, undefined, 00:01:40.26\00:01:44.13 and the reason I wanted to have this conversation with you 00:01:44.17\00:01:47.34 is because I think we really need 00:01:47.37\00:01:49.04 to take a hard look 00:01:49.07\00:01:50.94 at what American values really are. 00:01:50.97\00:01:55.04 I think first and foremost of the Bill of Rights 00:01:55.08\00:01:58.58 of representative government rights 00:01:58.61\00:02:02.05 that are God-given rights 00:02:02.08\00:02:03.72 and alienable rights that belong to individuals 00:02:03.75\00:02:07.42 and the government is in place to protect those rights, 00:02:07.46\00:02:12.36 that's, you know, part of the... 00:02:12.39\00:02:14.96 Do you think most people in the United States 00:02:15.00\00:02:17.00 even know what those rights are? 00:02:17.03\00:02:19.43 Well, you know, the ACLU, favorite punching bag 00:02:19.47\00:02:23.61 of the Christian right, they took the Bill of Rights... 00:02:23.64\00:02:27.24 And of the right generally. 00:02:27.28\00:02:28.61 They took the Bill of Rights door-to-door 00:02:28.64\00:02:30.98 some years back to see, you know, do a survey 00:02:31.01\00:02:34.48 and see what people thought. 00:02:34.52\00:02:35.95 And I tell you, the results were, 00:02:35.98\00:02:38.85 they wouldn't get voted today. 00:02:38.89\00:02:40.59 I know. No. 00:02:40.62\00:02:41.96 And people were not familiar with them. 00:02:41.99\00:02:44.09 And most of the surveys I've seen that 00:02:44.13\00:02:46.39 in between presidential elections, 00:02:46.43\00:02:49.20 only a very small percentage of people 00:02:49.23\00:02:51.03 can even name the sitting president. 00:02:51.07\00:02:52.53 I think for a number of reasons that's not true. 00:02:52.57\00:02:54.94 I've gone to high school classes, 00:02:54.97\00:02:56.67 and I'll ask them, 00:02:56.71\00:02:58.04 "How many members of the Simpsons family 00:02:58.07\00:03:00.24 can you name?" 00:03:00.28\00:03:01.61 And then I'll ask them, 00:03:01.64\00:03:02.98 "How many of the First Amendment rights 00:03:03.01\00:03:05.01 can you name?" 00:03:05.05\00:03:06.38 Well, let me quote a Bible text. 00:03:06.41\00:03:08.12 They know all about Simpsons and they do... 00:03:08.15\00:03:09.48 Free speech to the US and it's self understanding 00:03:09.52\00:03:12.92 of its founding principles. 00:03:12.95\00:03:14.42 This is my people, perish for lack of knowledge. 00:03:14.46\00:03:17.89 And if the US is to go down, 00:03:17.93\00:03:20.63 and you've got to face historical facts, one day, 00:03:20.66\00:03:24.40 this great country is an imperial power, 00:03:24.43\00:03:26.97 will go down, 00:03:27.00\00:03:28.34 that's just the nature of the stream of history. 00:03:28.37\00:03:31.31 But we don't want that day to be tomorrow, 00:03:31.34\00:03:33.27 or certainly not today. 00:03:33.31\00:03:34.84 But I think little self-knowledge 00:03:34.88\00:03:37.38 is an order, and it's very troubling to me 00:03:37.41\00:03:39.95 having lived most of my life in the US, 00:03:39.98\00:03:42.15 how little Americans know about their own system. 00:03:42.18\00:03:45.75 So it's not just having these rights, 00:03:45.79\00:03:47.86 but it's how we as a nation project 00:03:47.89\00:03:50.83 the value of these rights of these freedoms 00:03:50.86\00:03:53.46 around the world. 00:03:53.50\00:03:55.36 Little more than a decade ago, 00:03:55.40\00:03:57.20 Senator John McCain spoke for a dinner, 00:03:57.23\00:04:00.37 a religious liberty dinner on Capitol Hill, 00:04:00.40\00:04:02.57 that Liberty magazine was one of the sponsors of. 00:04:02.60\00:04:06.61 And, you know, as we're sitting here, 00:04:06.64\00:04:08.04 of course, our nation is mourning 00:04:08.08\00:04:10.41 his recent passing. 00:04:10.45\00:04:12.55 Senator McCain was very direct 00:04:12.58\00:04:15.92 and very eloquent in insisting that, 00:04:15.95\00:04:19.15 you know, America's greatness is tied 00:04:19.19\00:04:21.59 to our projecting, 00:04:21.62\00:04:23.49 these values of freedom and democracy 00:04:23.53\00:04:25.96 around the world, 00:04:25.99\00:04:27.33 and not just pursuing naked self-interest 00:04:27.36\00:04:30.77 and national security. 00:04:30.80\00:04:32.13 Absolutely. I agreed with that speech. 00:04:32.17\00:04:34.07 It was arguably the best speech 00:04:34.10\00:04:37.61 we ever had at the Liberty dinner, 00:04:37.64\00:04:39.27 and very substantial. 00:04:39.31\00:04:41.68 I mean, it wasn't just kind words 00:04:41.71\00:04:43.71 and we appreciate them on that occasion. 00:04:43.75\00:04:46.18 But it was well thought out, it was logical, 00:04:46.21\00:04:48.88 and it was full of projecting a morality 00:04:48.92\00:04:53.82 abroad rather than power. 00:04:53.86\00:04:55.42 It wasn't a power speech, was it? 00:04:55.46\00:04:57.16 And I'll just put in a plug for our listeners 00:04:57.19\00:05:00.13 to go look it up on my website at ChurchState.org, 00:05:00.16\00:05:04.67 if you search for McCain, 00:05:04.70\00:05:06.03 you'll find the entire text of the speech 00:05:06.07\00:05:08.54 at our Churchstate website. 00:05:08.57\00:05:10.04 We were talking about this program, 00:05:10.07\00:05:11.41 you wanted to read it aloud. 00:05:11.44\00:05:13.07 I didn't oppose you on it. It was very inspiring. 00:05:13.11\00:05:15.91 But, you know, look, I want to put this 00:05:15.94\00:05:18.58 in a biblical context. 00:05:18.61\00:05:19.95 You know, you and I are Seventh-day Adventists, 00:05:19.98\00:05:21.85 and we believe that the Revelation 13, 00:05:21.88\00:05:25.92 mark of the beast passage, that the nation portrayed there 00:05:25.95\00:05:29.16 that will eventually deliver the mark of the beast 00:05:29.19\00:05:32.13 is the United States, 00:05:32.16\00:05:33.63 and we don't have time to explain 00:05:33.66\00:05:35.23 why we believe that, but it's described 00:05:35.26\00:05:38.37 with two very unique characteristics. 00:05:38.40\00:05:40.64 First, having lamb-like horns, but also speaking as a dragon. 00:05:40.67\00:05:45.97 Now the lamb of course is a symbol of Christ himself. 00:05:46.01\00:05:48.94 When I grew up... 00:05:48.98\00:05:50.31 The dragon is symbol of the devil. 00:05:50.35\00:05:51.68 Whenever I saw that illustrated, 00:05:51.71\00:05:53.05 it was always a bison 00:05:53.08\00:05:55.48 which is not like a lamb-like, but he's sort 00:05:55.52\00:05:57.55 of a very nice-looking creature. 00:05:57.59\00:05:59.52 But as a few unfortunate tourists 00:05:59.55\00:06:02.19 at Yellowstone had found out that there was, 00:06:02.22\00:06:03.83 I think, they were Japanese tourists, 00:06:03.86\00:06:05.59 they posed in front of a bison for a selfie, and he got them. 00:06:05.63\00:06:09.80 They're not as benign as they appear. 00:06:09.83\00:06:11.67 Well, you know, I've often said in explaining that passage, 00:06:11.70\00:06:16.10 ladies, it's not true that all men are beasts, 00:06:16.14\00:06:18.64 but it is true 00:06:18.67\00:06:20.01 that all nations are beasts, you know? 00:06:20.04\00:06:21.74 Well, yes, that's the way they acted 00:06:21.78\00:06:24.78 or often portrayed in the Bible. 00:06:24.81\00:06:26.35 So I... 00:06:26.38\00:06:27.72 Look, I think. 00:06:27.75\00:06:29.08 These leopards, and bears, and... 00:06:29.12\00:06:30.45 Right. 00:06:30.49\00:06:31.82 The biblical imagery I think is fair. 00:06:31.85\00:06:33.19 United States is not all great, and we're not all terrible. 00:06:33.22\00:06:37.16 We have aspirations that are Christ-like, 00:06:37.19\00:06:40.23 that are lamb-like, that have to do 00:06:40.26\00:06:41.96 with how we relate to power. 00:06:42.00\00:06:43.87 Horns are a symbol of power. 00:06:43.90\00:06:45.70 Two horns are a symbol of a separating 00:06:45.73\00:06:49.00 or division of power. 00:06:49.04\00:06:50.71 And we have, for example... 00:06:50.74\00:06:54.91 There's a lot of criticism about the fact, 00:06:54.94\00:06:57.58 "Oh, well the separate church and state." 00:06:57.61\00:06:59.38 It's not written in our Constitution. 00:06:59.41\00:07:01.45 Well, neither is the phrase, "Separation of powers." 00:07:01.48\00:07:04.22 But this is what our Constitution does, 00:07:04.25\00:07:07.39 not what it says. 00:07:07.42\00:07:08.76 It divides power 00:07:08.79\00:07:10.23 among the branches of government. 00:07:10.26\00:07:12.36 We also divide power among federal state 00:07:12.39\00:07:15.00 and local government. 00:07:15.03\00:07:17.23 We also recognize the institutional separation 00:07:17.27\00:07:20.27 between the institution of religion of the church, 00:07:20.30\00:07:23.71 and its schools, and etcetera, its churches, and governments. 00:07:23.74\00:07:28.74 So we have these principles that by separating power, 00:07:28.78\00:07:33.31 we protect against tyranny, 00:07:33.35\00:07:35.55 we protect against the accumulation 00:07:35.58\00:07:37.99 and abuse of power. 00:07:38.02\00:07:39.35 Let's talk about something, often, it comes up here, 00:07:39.39\00:07:41.92 but, you know, the Constitution, 00:07:41.96\00:07:44.79 I think, protects religion, 00:07:44.83\00:07:46.80 and the United States' history, I studied history... 00:07:46.83\00:07:49.96 It does protect religion. Sorry, what did I say? 00:07:50.00\00:07:54.37 You said you think it does. It does protect religion. 00:07:54.40\00:07:56.64 Well, no. 00:07:56.67\00:07:58.01 But I mean, I just, yeah, I agree with that. 00:07:58.04\00:07:59.37 Right. 00:07:59.41\00:08:00.98 But, you know, the United States' history 00:08:01.01\00:08:02.41 like the history of all people's gets mixed 00:08:02.44\00:08:04.91 with myths and facts 00:08:04.95\00:08:06.41 and fiction, sort of intertwined. 00:08:06.45\00:08:08.58 And you can easily make 00:08:08.62\00:08:10.25 a good track of religious dissidents 00:08:10.29\00:08:12.15 coming to these shores 00:08:12.19\00:08:13.52 and being sheltered, that's true. 00:08:13.56\00:08:14.89 But of course, 00:08:14.92\00:08:16.26 it had a very extremely secular history 00:08:16.29\00:08:17.96 at the same time. 00:08:17.99\00:08:20.10 And so I don't question the role of religion. 00:08:20.13\00:08:22.30 In fact, I believe the founders made an automatic assumption 00:08:22.33\00:08:27.94 that the society that operated under the Constitution 00:08:27.97\00:08:32.31 would probably always be Protestant Christian. 00:08:32.34\00:08:37.81 I don't think they could have ever envisaged 00:08:37.85\00:08:40.42 that it was anything other. 00:08:40.45\00:08:41.88 And a lot of the functioning the government 00:08:41.92\00:08:44.09 is predicated on that norm which is gone. 00:08:44.12\00:08:47.46 It's not even... 00:08:47.49\00:08:49.06 It's a grossly secular mindset, 00:08:49.09\00:08:52.29 and it shifted now not just to Roman Catholicism, 00:08:52.33\00:08:56.10 which is inordinately represented 00:08:56.13\00:08:57.87 in the government, but, you know, 00:08:57.90\00:09:00.00 when we have 30-40 Muslims, and so on. 00:09:00.04\00:09:02.10 So it's a whole different game. 00:09:02.14\00:09:04.21 Well, we're living on borrowed cultural capital 00:09:04.24\00:09:06.44 in that sense 00:09:06.47\00:09:07.81 because our concept of rights is a very Protestant concept. 00:09:07.84\00:09:12.11 Yeah, you're getting to what I'm building to. 00:09:12.15\00:09:13.75 But we've lost the philosophical 00:09:13.78\00:09:16.79 or the religious foundation for our rights. 00:09:16.82\00:09:19.29 In many ways, I see that constitutional 00:09:19.32\00:09:21.92 is almost code to link with this cultural 00:09:21.96\00:09:25.36 understanding that they brought 00:09:25.39\00:09:26.80 as a Protestant and Anglo Protestant community. 00:09:26.83\00:09:31.77 But that said, 00:09:31.80\00:09:33.13 on the separation of church and state, 00:09:33.17\00:09:34.50 it's very simple, isn't it? 00:09:34.54\00:09:35.87 Just half of one Amendment. 00:09:35.90\00:09:37.24 Congress shall make no law establishing religion. 00:09:37.27\00:09:40.88 Respecting the establishment of religion. 00:09:40.91\00:09:42.24 Establishment of religion. 00:09:42.28\00:09:45.11 Or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. 00:09:45.15\00:09:47.02 What's that? 00:09:47.05\00:09:48.38 I mean, I read all sorts of articles 00:09:48.42\00:09:50.79 about separation or otherwise or whatever. 00:09:50.82\00:09:53.12 But how could you read those words 00:09:53.15\00:09:54.96 anything other than the government 00:09:54.99\00:09:56.32 is out of the game? 00:09:56.36\00:09:57.83 Well, this is... 00:09:57.86\00:09:59.19 It's not meant to be... 00:09:59.23\00:10:00.56 The basic principle. 00:10:00.60\00:10:01.93 Legislating period on religious. 00:10:01.96\00:10:03.30 It's just off limits. Right. 00:10:03.33\00:10:04.67 Religion is not the object of civil government, 00:10:04.70\00:10:06.37 that's what Madison said, you know? 00:10:06.40\00:10:10.17 So what makes America great truly 00:10:10.21\00:10:12.97 is this foundation of how we deal with power in order 00:10:13.01\00:10:17.48 to protect civil and religious freedom, 00:10:17.51\00:10:19.98 that and then how we use those principles 00:10:20.02\00:10:23.72 in how we project our influence globally. 00:10:23.75\00:10:28.06 If our global influence is simply 00:10:28.09\00:10:30.86 for our own economic self-interest, 00:10:30.89\00:10:33.26 for our own power base, 00:10:33.29\00:10:35.20 that's not what America has been historically... 00:10:35.23\00:10:38.07 That has been the premise of every world empire 00:10:38.10\00:10:41.47 that has risen or fallen 00:10:41.50\00:10:42.90 and has succumbed to the temptations 00:10:42.94\00:10:44.71 of the devil. 00:10:44.74\00:10:46.07 You know, the devil offered Christ 00:10:46.11\00:10:48.61 the whole world 00:10:48.64\00:10:49.98 if he would bow down and worship. 00:10:50.01\00:10:51.35 And when we seek for power, for our own sake, 00:10:51.38\00:10:55.42 we are bowing down before the devil. 00:10:55.45\00:10:57.29 Yeah. 00:10:57.32\00:10:58.65 And I... 00:10:58.69\00:11:00.02 You didn't read McCain's speech, 00:11:00.06\00:11:02.06 but in our meeting, the other day, 00:11:02.09\00:11:03.66 that you and I attended, 00:11:03.69\00:11:05.03 I read a bit of my own editorial 00:11:05.06\00:11:06.53 which is rather hubristic. 00:11:06.56\00:11:11.80 But, you know, I tried to make the case, 00:11:11.83\00:11:13.94 the point of the highest recent greatness, 00:11:13.97\00:11:18.54 sounds bad, of the US. 00:11:18.57\00:11:20.28 To me, that was the period 00:11:20.31\00:11:21.64 when we were actively trying to project a Christian norm 00:11:21.68\00:11:25.28 as against a secular communism. 00:11:25.31\00:11:28.28 And that was the era where we had the Peace Corps 00:11:28.32\00:11:31.12 and disinterested giving 00:11:31.15\00:11:34.46 because the US population have shown great generosity, 00:11:34.49\00:11:37.73 and I think it derived not from who we are as Americans, 00:11:37.76\00:11:41.60 I think it derived from this Christian 00:11:41.63\00:11:43.37 Protestant sensibility, which is disappearing. 00:11:43.40\00:11:48.04 The US doesn't give much to other countries now. 00:11:48.07\00:11:50.71 It's not just this president administration 00:11:50.74\00:11:52.67 closing the gates. 00:11:52.71\00:11:54.04 It stopped once the Soviet Union collapsed. 00:11:54.08\00:11:56.31 We no longer... 00:11:56.34\00:11:57.68 we're operating on a consciously Christian 00:11:57.71\00:12:00.22 basis of helping others because we want to help. 00:12:00.25\00:12:03.99 We turn people away at the borders 00:12:04.02\00:12:06.42 much more than we used to because now it's not... 00:12:06.45\00:12:09.56 The actions are not, 00:12:09.59\00:12:10.93 the back drop is not Christian charity, 00:12:10.96\00:12:13.29 its national self-interest. 00:12:13.33\00:12:15.26 And I think the disappearance of a Christian Protestant value 00:12:15.30\00:12:19.33 is the biggest change. 00:12:19.37\00:12:21.30 Figures that might be saying one thing or the other, 00:12:21.34\00:12:23.41 at the moment, you know, I find objectionable. 00:12:23.44\00:12:25.11 But that's, they're sort of moving into the situation. 00:12:25.14\00:12:28.48 You know, and I'll invoke the Hitler thing again. 00:12:28.51\00:12:31.55 You know, Hitler was one of the blots on history. 00:12:31.58\00:12:34.48 But I'm certain 00:12:34.52\00:12:35.85 that if Adolf Hitler hadn't appeared 00:12:35.88\00:12:37.42 at that time, somebody else with similar views would have. 00:12:37.45\00:12:40.42 Germany was ripe for it. 00:12:40.46\00:12:42.69 And at the moment, we are losing our values, 00:12:42.72\00:12:45.26 and this sort of catch cry or some equivalent of... 00:12:45.29\00:12:49.23 It would have come up anyway. 00:12:49.26\00:12:50.60 Well, I don't think we can talk about what makes America great, 00:12:50.63\00:12:53.67 the lamb-like horns, without also talking 00:12:53.70\00:12:56.04 about the dragon's influence and the speaking as a dragon 00:12:56.07\00:12:59.77 in the context of the prophecy. 00:12:59.81\00:13:01.54 And who is the dragon? 00:13:01.58\00:13:02.91 Well, the dragon in Scripture is the devil. 00:13:02.94\00:13:04.75 But, you know, 00:13:04.78\00:13:06.11 that if you look back at American history, 00:13:06.15\00:13:08.75 I mean, from the get-go, 00:13:08.78\00:13:10.35 it seems to me that the major theme 00:13:10.39\00:13:12.52 in dragon-like conduct has been our treatment 00:13:12.55\00:13:16.29 of Native Americans, of blacks, of immigrants. 00:13:16.32\00:13:20.20 You know, I'll be speaking in a Hispanic Church, 00:13:20.23\00:13:23.00 and I'll say to them, 00:13:23.03\00:13:24.37 "You know, you guys think you're special. 00:13:24.40\00:13:26.03 You think that America 00:13:26.07\00:13:27.40 is treating you really badly, right?" 00:13:27.44\00:13:29.34 And of course we are. 00:13:29.37\00:13:31.01 And I'll say, "But I got news for you. 00:13:31.04\00:13:33.34 We've treated every generation of immigrants 00:13:33.38\00:13:36.18 just as badly as you guys." 00:13:36.21\00:13:38.81 And part of that of course is debased human nature 00:13:38.85\00:13:41.48 and all of the imperial powers 00:13:41.52\00:13:43.39 as they projected, Spain, England, 00:13:43.42\00:13:45.22 Portugal, and Germany, they did the same things. 00:13:45.25\00:13:48.46 The Europeans, I think, 00:13:48.49\00:13:50.59 were culturally vicious. 00:13:50.63\00:13:56.70 So we don't have much to be proud of on that. 00:13:56.73\00:13:59.67 But I think I can make a good case 00:13:59.70\00:14:01.54 that the US in the... 00:14:01.57\00:14:03.51 or the expansion of the US, 00:14:03.54\00:14:05.11 and then under its national sovereignty, 00:14:05.14\00:14:07.81 it was moderated a bit 00:14:07.84\00:14:09.18 because of this Protestant Christian sensibility. 00:14:09.21\00:14:12.91 Of course. 00:14:12.95\00:14:15.25 I can see we're right at the break point, 00:14:15.28\00:14:18.52 at a natural pause, but please come back with us 00:14:18.55\00:14:21.32 as we discuss greatness and its necessity 00:14:21.36\00:14:24.66 and how you and I can be involved in it. 00:14:24.69\00:14:26.63
