Welcome back to the Liberty Insider, 00:00:05.47\00:00:07.90 before the break, Carmela, 00:00:07.94\00:00:10.51 you've given a wonderful vision statement 00:00:10.54\00:00:13.21 from the point of view of your magazine, 00:00:13.24\00:00:17.65 but you know we're not there yet, are we? 00:00:17.68\00:00:20.58 We've got a big challenge ahead of us, 00:00:20.62\00:00:22.18 it's a big world and so much of religious liberty and message, 00:00:22.22\00:00:28.36 you know, it has to by definition 00:00:28.39\00:00:29.72 deal with close at hand, but I'm impressed 00:00:29.76\00:00:32.46 when I look at Message Magazine, 00:00:32.49\00:00:34.20 how broader its scope is that 00:00:34.23\00:00:36.10 when it was first envisaged, wasn't it? 00:00:36.13\00:00:39.13 Well, I believe... 00:00:39.17\00:00:40.50 It dealt with I think a particular need 00:00:40.54\00:00:42.50 and a very particular target audience 00:00:42.54\00:00:46.34 but there's a lot in message now. 00:00:46.37\00:00:49.34 I... 00:00:49.38\00:00:50.71 In fact, I should give you a medal on this, 00:00:50.75\00:00:53.98 so you might wear it as a medal, 00:00:54.02\00:00:55.35 but I think in many ways Message 00:00:55.38\00:00:57.22 has got more utilitarian general coverage 00:00:57.25\00:01:00.36 sometimes than the signs or magazine 00:01:00.39\00:01:03.16 that our church has printed to reach out 00:01:03.19\00:01:05.26 to the general public for a long time. 00:01:05.29\00:01:06.66 Wow! You're blowing me away. 00:01:06.70\00:01:10.40 Well, it's real world stuff. 00:01:10.43\00:01:11.97 Praise God, because that is something 00:01:12.00\00:01:13.84 that we want to make sure 00:01:13.87\00:01:15.47 that we're dealing with the real world. 00:01:15.50\00:01:17.31 And for us, for many people I think they take for granted, 00:01:17.34\00:01:20.38 especially, in people who grew up 00:01:20.41\00:01:24.15 as a Seventh-day Adventists as I did, 00:01:24.18\00:01:26.95 things such as health and vegetarianism, 00:01:26.98\00:01:30.25 they take it for granted, but as I'm looking now 00:01:30.29\00:01:33.22 and I'm seeing people incorporate a vegan 00:01:33.25\00:01:36.26 or completely plant-based lifestyle. 00:01:36.29\00:01:39.06 And I've seen people do this, these have real world effects, 00:01:39.09\00:01:43.83 especially when people, so many people 00:01:43.87\00:01:45.90 do not have access to health care, 00:01:45.93\00:01:47.87 so many people could not pay for, 00:01:47.90\00:01:51.01 many people who are struggling with others but, you know, 00:01:51.04\00:01:53.34 you get the very prevalent health conditions 00:01:53.38\00:01:58.45 such as diabetes and obesity, 00:01:58.48\00:02:00.92 these are the things that can be addressed. 00:02:00.95\00:02:02.28 The social problems just compound, 00:02:02.32\00:02:03.65 yeah, we think it. 00:02:03.69\00:02:05.02 They can be addressed just by what you're having to eat 00:02:05.05\00:02:07.69 and your mind could be clear and your children could 00:02:07.72\00:02:10.26 do better in school, 00:02:10.29\00:02:11.63 and you can have a better night sleep, 00:02:11.66\00:02:12.99 and so these are the things. 00:02:13.03\00:02:14.36 Well, I've said it before on this program... 00:02:14.40\00:02:15.73 Yes. 00:02:15.76\00:02:17.10 And, you know, the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:02:17.13\00:02:18.70 from many years in the minds of a lot of people 00:02:18.73\00:02:20.70 that know nothing else about the church 00:02:20.74\00:02:22.27 is that it's got a health message. 00:02:22.30\00:02:23.64 Right. 00:02:23.67\00:02:25.01 And many Adventists I think have forgotten why we had it, 00:02:25.04\00:02:27.11 it wasn't to live longer, it was for a spiritual reason. 00:02:27.14\00:02:31.45 And Ellen White made the comment 00:02:31.48\00:02:32.81 that to me is mind-blowing. 00:02:32.85\00:02:34.88 She said that "The only way 00:02:34.92\00:02:37.42 that heaven has of contacting us 00:02:37.45\00:02:39.25 is through the nerve endings." 00:02:39.29\00:02:40.62 There you go. 00:02:40.66\00:02:41.99 And so that's an immediately practical reason to be 00:02:42.02\00:02:45.89 of healthy mind and therefore body, 00:02:45.93\00:02:48.36 I mean, body and therefore mind. 00:02:48.40\00:02:51.00 Your spiritual connections are at their peak. 00:02:51.03\00:02:53.84 Right, and that goes back to what we were talking 00:02:53.87\00:02:56.04 about before, the ability to read something 00:02:56.07\00:02:59.07 and to make the critical thoughts 00:02:59.11\00:03:02.28 and analysis behind what's going on, 00:03:02.31\00:03:04.58 and to be able to meditate on something and to think... 00:03:04.61\00:03:08.05 That's what we're trying to do 00:03:08.08\00:03:09.62 is make sure we put this stuff out 00:03:09.65\00:03:10.99 for one of these reasons. 00:03:11.02\00:03:12.35 Let me put the real hard question to you. 00:03:12.39\00:03:13.72 Go ahead. 00:03:13.76\00:03:15.09 You're an editor and you've read different studies 00:03:15.12\00:03:16.56 and all of the surveys show that the average 00:03:16.59\00:03:19.93 readability level of people has dropped precipitously, 00:03:19.96\00:03:22.70 some grade school level at the moment. 00:03:22.73\00:03:26.84 When you're dealing with complex and important topics, 00:03:26.87\00:03:29.40 how do we communicate that to people 00:03:29.44\00:03:31.47 whose comprehension is dropping below 00:03:31.51\00:03:34.31 or through certain threshold? 00:03:34.34\00:03:35.68 Oh, I love that. 00:03:35.71\00:03:37.71 You know, what I do is easy... 00:03:37.75\00:03:40.85 easy way, but you know, and that's the beauty 00:03:40.88\00:03:42.95 of the technology at the same time is that 00:03:42.98\00:03:45.32 we can make sure that we are not accommodating 00:03:45.35\00:03:49.52 but we're making sure that we are accessible to everyone 00:03:49.56\00:03:53.16 whose strength is not reading 00:03:53.19\00:03:55.86 and whose attention span is short. 00:03:55.90\00:03:58.80 You know, God didn't call us to be impressive intellectually, 00:03:58.83\00:04:02.90 He called us to reach people, 00:04:02.94\00:04:04.27 and so that's the way I look at it. 00:04:04.31\00:04:05.64 Thank you. 00:04:05.67\00:04:07.01 Well, you're actually ahead of my next comment, 00:04:07.04\00:04:08.74 but I'll still make it anyway, what worries me sometimes 00:04:08.78\00:04:14.32 an idea that's not directly stated 00:04:14.35\00:04:16.02 but implied to understand salvation requires 00:04:16.05\00:04:20.02 certain intellectual ability and application. 00:04:20.06\00:04:24.76 And if that's so, a lot of this world 00:04:24.79\00:04:27.73 is going to miss out. 00:04:27.76\00:04:29.50 At root it has to be a very simple idea, 00:04:29.53\00:04:32.53 but I like to think with editing 00:04:32.57\00:04:35.34 and promulgating materials, 00:04:35.37\00:04:37.21 a very simple idea still can require a systematic 00:04:37.24\00:04:40.64 and never ending explanation in its larger ramifications. 00:04:40.68\00:04:45.51 Right. 00:04:45.55\00:04:46.88 But the central idea has to be very simple 00:04:46.92\00:04:48.35 and easily understood by almost anyone 00:04:48.38\00:04:50.82 as long as it's correctly and clearly stated. 00:04:50.85\00:04:55.86 Yeah, and that's part of our ongoing mission 00:04:55.89\00:05:00.50 to make sure that we are more and more accessible to people 00:05:00.53\00:05:03.16 whose strength is not reading and whose strength 00:05:03.20\00:05:06.80 is not attention in long form. 00:05:06.84\00:05:11.44 You know, reception of that kind of thing 00:05:11.47\00:05:13.64 so it's important... 00:05:13.68\00:05:15.01 So back to what I stated in the earlier program. 00:05:15.04\00:05:18.45 You probably have ideas on it too but, you know, 00:05:18.48\00:05:21.28 even I belong to 00:05:21.32\00:05:22.65 the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:05:22.68\00:05:24.02 I'm a fourth generation, 00:05:24.05\00:05:25.55 so whole lot of nuance then my close circle. 00:05:25.59\00:05:30.79 I've lived most of my life in the US, 00:05:30.83\00:05:32.79 I came from Australia but I know the US pretty well. 00:05:32.83\00:05:35.96 And it seems to me that both our church, 00:05:36.00\00:05:38.57 by definition many other churches 00:05:38.60\00:05:40.64 and the country at large is suffering from a rapid 00:05:40.67\00:05:44.84 and recent decline in people's comprehension 00:05:44.87\00:05:48.14 of the basics that make up both the church 00:05:48.18\00:05:51.21 and democratic state. 00:05:51.25\00:05:54.62 And I don't see how either can really survive long 00:05:54.65\00:05:58.49 with gross ignorance. 00:05:58.52\00:06:00.59 No, and they cannot. 00:06:00.62\00:06:02.76 The US once survived... 00:06:02.79\00:06:04.39 Just even the Supreme Court 00:06:04.43\00:06:05.76 continue to do a pretty good job, 00:06:05.79\00:06:07.13 they've made a few bloopers, 00:06:07.16\00:06:08.86 but they give long and considered legal evaluation 00:06:08.90\00:06:12.50 but so what if the people have forgotten, 00:06:12.53\00:06:16.00 we are not to be paralleled with Rome all the time, 00:06:16.04\00:06:18.27 but it seems to me that people of Rome 00:06:18.31\00:06:20.78 got mixed up in their entertainments. 00:06:20.81\00:06:23.68 And the Senate became riven with strife and self interests, 00:06:23.71\00:06:29.88 and pretty soon they had emperors, and dictators, 00:06:29.92\00:06:32.55 and madmen ruling them. 00:06:32.59\00:06:34.92 And the church the same, pretty soon you can have 00:06:34.96\00:06:36.86 mad prophets leading you, 00:06:36.89\00:06:38.99 or worst bureaucratic functionaries. 00:06:39.03\00:06:42.06 Right, and all because either we didn't maintain 00:06:42.10\00:06:46.07 that knowledge or we just didn't dig hard enough 00:06:46.10\00:06:51.17 to know what those principles were. 00:06:51.21\00:06:52.84 Well, you remind me of a situation I had once, 00:06:52.87\00:06:55.91 I was teaching a law class, a law criminal procedure 00:06:55.94\00:06:59.75 kind of class once, and I had in my class of people... 00:06:59.78\00:07:05.35 It was not a law school class but in college level 00:07:05.39\00:07:09.16 and I had one of the campus security people 00:07:09.19\00:07:12.46 that were there, and we're talking about 00:07:12.49\00:07:13.83 when is it right to stop someone, 00:07:13.86\00:07:15.86 when is it right to confront someone with deadly force. 00:07:15.90\00:07:19.30 And I remember one of the test papers came back 00:07:19.33\00:07:22.27 from the security guard 00:07:22.30\00:07:23.64 that it is okay to shoot a shoplifter. 00:07:23.67\00:07:25.81 You know, it's okay to shoot, you know, 00:07:25.84\00:07:27.64 and I mean somebody that you think 00:07:27.68\00:07:29.01 of doing it is okay to do it. 00:07:29.04\00:07:30.65 And I think at a basic level there used to be a time 00:07:30.68\00:07:35.78 when everybody had a sense of what our freedoms required 00:07:35.82\00:07:40.19 and what they gave and you had a, 00:07:40.22\00:07:41.76 you knew who you were and what you could say, 00:07:41.79\00:07:45.43 these are my rights, 00:07:45.46\00:07:47.06 and this is that you can't go beyond this. 00:07:47.10\00:07:49.53 But when we let go of those, there is just grose ignorance 00:07:49.56\00:07:52.87 and grose miscarriages of justice. 00:07:52.90\00:07:55.90 You know, it works on many, many levels 00:07:55.94\00:07:57.51 and you're getting really putting up one. 00:07:57.54\00:08:00.78 Yeah. 00:08:00.81\00:08:02.14 I mean the police are guilty of that even without malice, 00:08:02.18\00:08:04.35 they're losing a proportion, now they're on apprehending. 00:08:04.38\00:08:06.45 Well, that's just an example, yes. 00:08:06.48\00:08:07.95 But where I heard something that may be about 00:08:07.98\00:08:12.09 blood running cold and it's gotten worse 00:08:12.12\00:08:14.26 during the election of 2000. 00:08:14.29\00:08:16.46 I heard over and over again, 00:08:16.49\00:08:19.33 if the majority wants something it goes. 00:08:19.36\00:08:21.80 Right. 00:08:21.83\00:08:23.16 When the whole basis of religious liberty 00:08:23.20\00:08:24.63 is protecting the minority against the majority 00:08:24.67\00:08:27.50 and we are not a majoritarian system. 00:08:27.54\00:08:30.41 In fact in the narrowest sense, the United States 00:08:30.44\00:08:32.67 is not a democracy, it's a democratic system, 00:08:32.71\00:08:37.01 it's a representative republic. 00:08:37.05\00:08:39.95 Republic means that the path derives from the people, 00:08:39.98\00:08:42.68 but the structure is representative. 00:08:42.72\00:08:45.35 People choose someone to represent them 00:08:45.39\00:08:47.79 in the governing system, but, you know, 00:08:47.82\00:08:50.09 if the 300 million people want something 00:08:50.13\00:08:53.63 and if it's against the principles 00:08:53.66\00:08:55.66 that the constitution and the country is founded on, 00:08:55.70\00:08:58.23 it's still not going to happen. 00:08:58.27\00:08:59.60 Right, right. 00:08:59.63\00:09:00.97 And I think that... 00:09:01.00\00:09:02.34 People have lost sight of that. 00:09:02.37\00:09:03.71 And to me that's the straight and narrow. 00:09:03.74\00:09:07.84 Well, not narrow the straight and wide road to despotism. 00:09:07.88\00:09:11.38 Oh, absolutely, and I think that's the beauty on which we, 00:09:11.41\00:09:14.92 this country was founded, call it what you like, 00:09:14.95\00:09:18.65 there was a carve out, 00:09:18.69\00:09:20.72 there was a carve out for people, 00:09:20.76\00:09:22.42 the religious minorities, the people who were strangers 00:09:22.46\00:09:25.56 on the shores, there's a carve out 00:09:25.59\00:09:27.93 so that there was not the tyranny of the majority. 00:09:27.96\00:09:31.03 There was an ability to make sure 00:09:31.07\00:09:33.74 that you don't just get out voted 00:09:33.77\00:09:36.30 or marginalized or pushed aside, 00:09:36.34\00:09:38.37 you know, very well everyone. 00:09:38.41\00:09:39.74 I know, very well said. 00:09:39.77\00:09:41.11 And you know I try to say too that religious liberty 00:09:41.14\00:09:43.48 does not mean that I like your religion 00:09:43.51\00:09:46.05 or your moral viewpoint, but I should be willing 00:09:46.08\00:09:49.32 to defend your right to hold that to the death. 00:09:49.35\00:09:51.32 Absolutely. 00:09:51.35\00:09:52.69 If you hold that, religious liberty is safe. 00:09:52.72\00:09:54.86 Absolutely, and I think that's one of those things 00:09:54.89\00:09:57.13 where we all have to learn how to blend what it is, 00:09:57.16\00:10:02.90 my interest, against your interest, 00:10:02.93\00:10:05.70 how do we continue to live and strive together 00:10:05.73\00:10:08.67 without me overcoming or overpowering you 00:10:08.70\00:10:12.11 and not being or succumbing to your views. 00:10:12.14\00:10:16.75 And today unfortunately, this is something that person 00:10:16.78\00:10:19.71 with the biggest mouth or the best social media 00:10:19.75\00:10:22.95 gets to rule the day. 00:10:22.98\00:10:24.52 That's not the way it's supposed to be. 00:10:24.55\00:10:25.95 Giving a message, years ago when my father died 00:10:29.62\00:10:33.36 and while he was suffering in hospital, 00:10:33.40\00:10:36.67 he said that he had a dream and in the middle of the night 00:10:36.70\00:10:39.57 he got up, got out of his bed 00:10:39.60\00:10:41.04 and went to a nearby Indian church 00:10:41.07\00:10:43.71 and he said to them, "I'm gravely ill, 00:10:43.74\00:10:46.31 I cannot stay but I have a message to give to you." 00:10:46.34\00:10:49.31 He says, "It's four words, trust in the Lord." 00:10:49.34\00:10:54.88 Message Magazine I think is as succinct as that. 00:10:54.92\00:10:58.22 It began with a message of trust and compassion 00:10:58.25\00:11:02.52 for a certain subgroup of the American experience 00:11:02.56\00:11:06.70 and it still caters to minorities, 00:11:06.73\00:11:09.26 but I think its message as the general messages 00:11:09.30\00:11:12.43 of salvation is broadened to accomplish 00:11:12.47\00:11:16.00 or to encompass a great many of the daily challenges 00:11:16.04\00:11:20.81 that we all face, and that challenge, 00:11:20.84\00:11:23.51 that particular challenge must include 00:11:23.55\00:11:26.05 a challenge of religious liberty. 00:11:26.08\00:11:29.82 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:11:29.85\00:11:33.05
