Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:27.16\00:00:28.72 This is a program bringing you religious liberty news, 00:00:28.76\00:00:32.99 and evaluation and discussion 00:00:33.03\00:00:35.36 on things that are happening really all around the world 00:00:35.40\00:00:38.20 but very often starting in the United States. 00:00:38.23\00:00:41.14 My name is Lincoln Steed, Editor of Liberty Magazine. 00:00:41.17\00:00:44.94 And my guest on this program is Carmela Monk Crawford, 00:00:44.97\00:00:49.41 Editor of Message magazine. 00:00:49.44\00:00:52.11 And I started a filming sequence with you recently 00:00:52.15\00:00:55.92 by talking about Message. 00:00:55.95\00:00:57.29 Yes. But I like... 00:00:57.32\00:00:58.92 I love that name, 00:00:58.95\00:01:00.29 what is the message of the Message? 00:01:00.32\00:01:02.62 Oh, my goodness. 00:01:02.66\00:01:03.99 The message for us, 00:01:04.03\00:01:05.53 the message that we want to relate to people, 00:01:05.56\00:01:08.13 the three Rs, 00:01:08.16\00:01:09.93 Redemption, Relationship, and Readiness. 00:01:09.96\00:01:13.54 That is the message that we want to let people know 00:01:13.57\00:01:16.71 that number one, 00:01:16.74\00:01:18.31 you've been bought with a price, 00:01:18.34\00:01:20.18 the value that each individual that we know has 00:01:20.21\00:01:25.15 is something that not only does God recognize 00:01:25.18\00:01:28.72 but we recognize. 00:01:28.75\00:01:30.09 That's very good. Yes. 00:01:30.12\00:01:31.45 I like that summary, because I was hoping, 00:01:31.49\00:01:32.99 the name just makes it, 00:01:33.02\00:01:34.36 it's outward reaching to tell something to the people 00:01:34.39\00:01:37.76 and to share something of great value. 00:01:37.79\00:01:41.10 Liberty is more... 00:01:41.13\00:01:43.90 To me it sounds more like doing and going, 00:01:43.93\00:01:46.27 you know, it flags, it's the best in. 00:01:46.30\00:01:50.61 But in reality 00:01:50.64\00:01:52.27 I like to define it the same way. 00:01:52.31\00:01:56.24 It's got to have a spiritual redemptive element 00:01:56.28\00:01:59.18 or it's just legal, legalize. 00:01:59.21\00:02:01.78 Right, right. 00:02:01.82\00:02:03.15 And religious liberty 00:02:03.18\00:02:04.52 can very easily devour overnight. 00:02:04.55\00:02:06.52 I don't know, well, it guess down 00:02:06.55\00:02:07.89 with some of my fellow religious liberty allegiance 00:02:07.92\00:02:09.32 but I tell them, you know, 00:02:09.36\00:02:10.69 it's not about just court cases and President. 00:02:10.73\00:02:13.53 Right. 00:02:13.56\00:02:14.90 There's something big here and for Seventh-day Adventist 00:02:14.93\00:02:17.50 religious liberty always ran concurrent with our world view 00:02:17.53\00:02:21.00 and a prophetic expectation 00:02:21.04\00:02:23.37 which really is hopeful in that. 00:02:23.41\00:02:25.44 You know, we're not doomsdays like the world is about to end, 00:02:25.47\00:02:27.94 it might be but a new world is about to begin, 00:02:27.98\00:02:29.64 so it's exciting. 00:02:29.68\00:02:31.01 Yeah. 00:02:31.05\00:02:32.38 Yes, and is preserving that space, 00:02:32.41\00:02:34.72 so that we could each have that relationship 00:02:34.75\00:02:37.45 and realize the redemption 00:02:37.49\00:02:39.79 and realize it as put to us, or given to us. 00:02:39.82\00:02:43.02 Absolutely. So... 00:02:43.06\00:02:44.39 And, you know, at our church, I think is, 00:02:44.43\00:02:46.96 doing good things in many areas 00:02:47.00\00:02:48.90 but it's a good thing to remind ourselves 00:02:48.93\00:02:51.23 about this root reason for doing things like, 00:02:51.27\00:02:54.44 or for producing things like 00:02:54.47\00:02:56.34 Message and Liberty and other programs, 00:02:56.37\00:02:59.01 although you're an editor too. 00:02:59.04\00:03:00.88 To me, magazines and editing 00:03:00.91\00:03:03.95 and the promulgation of the materials 00:03:03.98\00:03:05.61 is central to what we're about. 00:03:05.65\00:03:07.65 I'm not quite on this twitter and these other things, 00:03:07.68\00:03:11.55 obviously that's making the world shake on its axis 00:03:11.59\00:03:14.46 or shake on its foundations. 00:03:14.49\00:03:17.16 But I think there's a lot of superficiality 00:03:17.19\00:03:20.86 in some of this electronic communication, 00:03:20.90\00:03:22.63 but to have this meaty little package 00:03:22.66\00:03:26.27 given to you, 00:03:26.30\00:03:27.64 there could be a lot rolled up in that, right? 00:03:27.67\00:03:29.67 You're speaking my language, this is only an editor, 00:03:29.70\00:03:33.04 we can sit here and talk about that all day long, 00:03:33.07\00:03:35.68 because you're right, people wonder 00:03:35.71\00:03:38.61 about the relevance of the vehicle. 00:03:38.65\00:03:41.78 I believe the message is what's on the vehicle 00:03:41.82\00:03:45.19 that's very relevant 00:03:45.22\00:03:46.55 but I also believe the vehicle in this case. 00:03:46.59\00:03:48.99 I believe God preserved Liberty and Message for a reason, 00:03:49.02\00:03:53.96 even in the light of the publishing industry 00:03:54.00\00:03:56.97 and all the changes that have made 00:03:57.00\00:03:58.80 and the fact that everybody is a publisher 00:03:58.83\00:04:01.24 in his or her own right 00:04:01.27\00:04:03.37 when they take to their thumbs on twitter 00:04:03.41\00:04:05.67 or they are on social media, 00:04:05.71\00:04:07.31 everybody is a publisher in themselves. 00:04:07.34\00:04:10.31 Right, you know, one of discussion... 00:04:10.35\00:04:11.85 We had many discussions 00:04:11.88\00:04:13.21 and your part of the saying once we are... 00:04:13.25\00:04:15.35 I think those that don't have as much respect 00:04:15.38\00:04:17.32 for what made our church 00:04:17.35\00:04:19.75 and indeed what made the reformation, 00:04:19.79\00:04:21.22 it was printing and publishing and promulgation of pamphlets 00:04:21.26\00:04:24.13 and all the rest, they got Luther on the map. 00:04:24.16\00:04:27.46 He wouldn't have got the first place 00:04:27.50\00:04:29.26 but for the printed material of what went around. 00:04:29.30\00:04:31.63 But I listen to people 00:04:31.67\00:04:34.24 that are very animate with the new techniques 00:04:34.27\00:04:36.57 and goodness knows, there's great possibilities, 00:04:36.60\00:04:39.14 but they forget, 00:04:39.17\00:04:40.68 that's really reverting to what always has been here, 00:04:40.71\00:04:43.31 the greatest promulgation of ideas is word of mouth, 00:04:43.35\00:04:48.18 you can't stop that. 00:04:48.22\00:04:49.55 But since printing began, 00:04:49.58\00:04:53.02 it's a way to put this word of mouth message down 00:04:53.05\00:04:58.53 in a systematic well organized, well presented fashion, 00:04:58.56\00:05:02.13 and I know when you let it, 00:05:02.16\00:05:03.50 I am sure you do the same as I do. 00:05:03.53\00:05:05.53 I look at what articles guys would work, 00:05:05.57\00:05:07.64 because sometimes the whole is greater than the individual. 00:05:07.67\00:05:10.37 Yes, than the powers. Yes, absolutely. 00:05:10.41\00:05:12.27 Because this can set you up for that other article 00:05:12.31\00:05:15.81 where an isolation, 00:05:15.84\00:05:17.18 may be they wouldn't even see why should I read that, 00:05:17.21\00:05:18.78 no interest, but it could lead to it. 00:05:18.81\00:05:20.58 You know, there are many times 00:05:20.62\00:05:21.95 when I will read through the magazine, 00:05:21.98\00:05:24.25 and proofs and everything 00:05:24.29\00:05:25.62 and it's at the end that I'm saying, 00:05:25.65\00:05:27.52 and I can't say 00:05:27.56\00:05:28.89 that there are many magazines or publications 00:05:28.92\00:05:30.93 that I will read all the way through, 00:05:30.96\00:05:32.29 but because of what we do 00:05:32.33\00:05:34.83 by the time you get to the end of it, 00:05:34.86\00:05:36.46 you realize there was a message in this, 00:05:36.50\00:05:39.07 there is something that is important 00:05:39.10\00:05:40.54 and as you said 00:05:40.57\00:05:41.90 the new forms 00:05:41.94\00:05:43.27 of communication sort of revert back 00:05:43.30\00:05:45.74 to what we've often had, 00:05:45.77\00:05:47.74 but what still holds true for our printed materials 00:05:47.78\00:05:51.28 is that they make a case, 00:05:51.31\00:05:52.98 a systematic case that works differently physiologically 00:05:53.01\00:05:57.35 between your fingers and your head, 00:05:57.39\00:05:59.89 that is more persuasive, 00:05:59.92\00:06:02.32 it leads to better retention, 00:06:02.36\00:06:05.63 and the critical analysis 00:06:05.66\00:06:07.93 that's involved in reading the material, 00:06:07.96\00:06:10.97 really it works on your... 00:06:11.00\00:06:12.33 I love the way you are saying this. 00:06:12.37\00:06:13.80 You're speaking to the... 00:06:13.84\00:06:15.17 Yeah, I know, 00:06:15.20\00:06:16.54 we're on the same wavelength in a lot of, 00:06:16.57\00:06:18.21 maybe a dying breed but I don't think so, 00:06:18.24\00:06:20.48 that's why I say I believe God preserved us. 00:06:20.51\00:06:23.18 No, it's... 00:06:23.21\00:06:24.61 We're not a dying breed, 00:06:24.65\00:06:25.98 but the idea is being challenged. 00:06:26.01\00:06:27.65 Right. 00:06:27.68\00:06:29.02 And this doesn't prove the point 00:06:29.05\00:06:30.42 but it's an interesting anecdote. 00:06:30.45\00:06:31.82 I can remember when I was young at the onset of computers 00:06:31.85\00:06:36.32 and computer memory and so on, 00:06:36.36\00:06:39.63 the paperless office was coming. 00:06:39.66\00:06:41.60 I don't know, 00:06:41.63\00:06:42.96 there's more paper floating around than ever before. 00:06:43.00\00:06:44.77 Yes. 00:06:44.80\00:06:46.13 Even when you have the files and all the rest, 00:06:46.17\00:06:48.80 this is all will we need to run it and see it, 00:06:48.84\00:06:51.47 put your hand on it, visualize it... 00:06:51.51\00:06:54.04 Underline it and highlight it. 00:06:54.08\00:06:56.75 No, I don't see any evidence whatsoever, 00:06:56.78\00:07:00.02 the reading and the visual representation, 00:07:00.05\00:07:03.62 whether it used to be on stone tablets 00:07:03.65\00:07:05.82 or clay tablets, 00:07:05.85\00:07:07.62 that's not going away but the patterns are shifting. 00:07:07.66\00:07:09.79 Yes. 00:07:09.82\00:07:11.16 The worst thing that I say 00:07:11.19\00:07:12.53 and we can't change anything by discussion here, 00:07:12.56\00:07:15.23 but I do think literacy or at least practical literacy 00:07:15.26\00:07:18.63 is dropping in the western world. 00:07:18.67\00:07:20.00 Absolutely. 00:07:20.04\00:07:21.37 And I don't know how we deal with that, 00:07:21.40\00:07:22.74 because online they're not going to get it 00:07:22.77\00:07:25.44 if they want to read more than a paragraph 00:07:25.47\00:07:27.11 or comprehend more than a paragraph at a time. 00:07:27.14\00:07:29.04 Right, and the... 00:07:29.08\00:07:30.41 Like we are saying the critical analysis 00:07:30.45\00:07:32.08 that's necessary to process this information, 00:07:32.11\00:07:35.85 it goes to the very heart of the issue with Facebook, 00:07:35.88\00:07:40.86 and our elections, and everything, 00:07:40.89\00:07:42.62 you know, you have to read behind the headlines, 00:07:42.66\00:07:45.49 you have to read and you have to question, 00:07:45.53\00:07:47.76 who would say this 00:07:47.80\00:07:49.13 and what's behind why they will say this, 00:07:49.16\00:07:51.00 and who has a stake in this and an interest in this. 00:07:51.03\00:07:53.77 These are all tools that not only keep our country, 00:07:53.80\00:07:57.07 our society going, 00:07:57.11\00:07:58.57 but it is crucial to who you are, 00:07:58.61\00:08:02.78 is you understand your role and your... 00:08:02.81\00:08:06.08 That spiritual part of you. 00:08:06.11\00:08:07.52 You have to, you know, it's a deeper level, 00:08:07.55\00:08:09.48 it's not a circus thing. 00:08:09.52\00:08:10.85 And then the other thing of this is none of bad stuff, 00:08:10.89\00:08:13.22 but people need to know this. 00:08:13.25\00:08:16.32 Our new president has gained a lot of traction 00:08:16.36\00:08:20.46 by talking about fake news. 00:08:20.50\00:08:24.17 There is and there always has been fake news, 00:08:24.20\00:08:27.14 but what I think it's increasing 00:08:27.17\00:08:29.37 is suspicion of people to information, 00:08:29.40\00:08:33.27 no matter where they get it 00:08:33.31\00:08:34.74 and it's worth remembering that magazines in particular, 00:08:34.78\00:08:37.71 this is we are talking about magazines 00:08:37.75\00:08:39.08 sort of been around a long time, 00:08:39.11\00:08:41.05 certainly should have some credibility 00:08:41.08\00:08:43.25 and reliability for information. 00:08:43.28\00:08:45.49 When you go on the internet, 00:08:45.52\00:08:47.22 they talk about information being spread 00:08:47.26\00:08:49.02 more information than before. 00:08:49.06\00:08:50.96 It's on the internet, it's not in people's heads, 00:08:50.99\00:08:52.79 but you go there 00:08:52.83\00:08:54.16 and here is a cornucopia of information, 00:08:54.20\00:08:56.73 and it ranges from the overly intellectual 00:08:56.77\00:09:00.64 for the Mensa crowd to nonsense who can... 00:09:00.67\00:09:05.57 There is not a human being on the planet 00:09:05.61\00:09:07.84 that has the mental ability all the time 00:09:07.88\00:09:10.35 to digest all of that 00:09:10.38\00:09:11.71 and turn it into something reliable. 00:09:11.75\00:09:13.65 So like it or not we have to rely on intermediaries. 00:09:13.68\00:09:16.75 Yes. And editors are a key. 00:09:16.79\00:09:18.72 Yes. 00:09:18.75\00:09:20.09 And I keep reminding myself that our movement, 00:09:20.12\00:09:22.32 the Seventh-day Adventist movement 00:09:22.36\00:09:23.69 followed on from the Millerite, Bible studies 00:09:23.73\00:09:26.73 and expectation of the imminent return of Christ, 00:09:26.76\00:09:30.30 but this movement is written 00:09:30.33\00:09:31.90 on the backs of publications and editors. 00:09:31.93\00:09:34.40 Yes. 00:09:34.44\00:09:35.77 They weren't just within the system, 00:09:35.80\00:09:38.37 they were the system. 00:09:38.41\00:09:40.14 Right, and challenging problems all along the way, 00:09:40.18\00:09:44.25 and as we've been talking, 00:09:44.28\00:09:45.85 as I've come to be here with you at this time 00:09:45.88\00:09:48.25 we're talking, those early editors, 00:09:48.28\00:09:52.52 it was not only a printed responsibility 00:09:52.55\00:09:56.62 they were also commenting 00:09:56.66\00:09:58.06 on the social problems of the time 00:09:58.09\00:10:01.26 and matching that, 00:10:01.30\00:10:03.13 looking at it against prophecy in their biblical understanding 00:10:03.16\00:10:07.30 and putting it out there for people to read. 00:10:07.34\00:10:09.90 What a beautiful thing, 00:10:09.94\00:10:12.11 but you don't see that long form analysis any more 00:10:12.14\00:10:15.94 of both what's happening in society 00:10:15.98\00:10:19.51 and just, you know, as I read the word 00:10:19.55\00:10:22.42 and I try to compare and I try to look 00:10:22.45\00:10:24.95 and I try to go behind the scenes, 00:10:24.99\00:10:26.55 you don't see that anymore. 00:10:26.59\00:10:27.92 No, well, because the expectation of editors 00:10:27.96\00:10:30.43 and the reliance on them is gone. 00:10:30.46\00:10:33.46 An editor is not as they used to come by 00:10:33.50\00:10:36.97 when I worked at the publishing house, 00:10:37.00\00:10:38.33 I would see some of us proofreading 00:10:38.37\00:10:41.10 or copy editing, 00:10:41.14\00:10:42.84 oh, doing that all day, how horrible, you know. 00:10:42.87\00:10:45.47 I've heard people say that, 00:10:45.51\00:10:46.84 but they think that's what an editor does, 00:10:46.88\00:10:48.28 just line editing, that is the end of the game, 00:10:48.31\00:10:51.18 perhaps before you assemble to think, 00:10:51.21\00:10:53.85 but an editor brings critical judgment, 00:10:53.88\00:10:56.15 is the ideas person, 00:10:56.18\00:10:58.12 setting the direction of the spine. 00:10:58.15\00:10:59.65 No accident, I'm going to invoke crazy figure, 00:10:59.69\00:11:02.76 but it's no accident 00:11:02.79\00:11:04.13 that Mussolini became the dictator of Italy, 00:11:04.16\00:11:06.56 he was a newspaper editor. 00:11:06.59\00:11:08.33 A newspaper... That was his... 00:11:08.36\00:11:09.93 No, and you can see it over and over again. 00:11:09.96\00:11:12.20 Adolf Hitler, Mine Kamf, putting... 00:11:12.23\00:11:15.97 I could make it good case 00:11:16.00\00:11:17.34 that he never would have gone anywhere 00:11:17.37\00:11:18.71 as any individual leader. 00:11:18.74\00:11:20.08 I think Nazism was inevitable, something as malignant as that, 00:11:20.11\00:11:24.28 but he is the leader. 00:11:24.31\00:11:25.65 No, it was his book and his writings 00:11:25.68\00:11:27.78 that catapulted him to people's... 00:11:27.82\00:11:30.92 Yeah, you have to watch the people who control... 00:11:30.95\00:11:32.39 And those were bad ideas 00:11:32.42\00:11:33.76 but good ideas sometimes are harder to sell, 00:11:33.79\00:11:36.46 but they should have a greater influence 00:11:36.49\00:11:37.83 in the long run. 00:11:37.86\00:11:39.19 Yeah, we have to watch 00:11:39.23\00:11:40.56 who is behind the communication for sure, 00:11:40.60\00:11:42.86 and we have to be involved 00:11:42.90\00:11:44.43 and actively part of what's going on, 00:11:44.47\00:11:48.27 what has been said in... 00:11:48.30\00:11:49.80 But how we change society into reading, I don't know, 00:11:49.84\00:11:52.94 I really don't know that. 00:11:52.97\00:11:55.04 The Bible says that 00:11:55.08\00:11:56.41 at the end of time, it was in Daniel, 00:11:56.44\00:11:57.78 but he's talking about the end of time, 00:11:57.81\00:11:59.15 knowledge shall be increased and men will run to and fro. 00:11:59.18\00:12:02.98 You know that sounds like a... 00:12:03.02\00:12:05.05 The second half sounds more like ADHD. 00:12:05.09\00:12:08.79 Let us not go to ADHD. 00:12:08.82\00:12:10.76 There's knowledge around 00:12:10.79\00:12:12.13 but you're running, can't settle. 00:12:12.16\00:12:13.50 Running to and fro, can't get it. 00:12:13.53\00:12:14.86 And although the Bible does say, 00:12:14.90\00:12:16.23 ever learning and never arriving at the truth. 00:12:16.26\00:12:18.07 Well, and we are inundated with a lot of information, 00:12:18.10\00:12:20.57 it is hard to get to that golden needle 00:12:20.60\00:12:23.64 in the haystack 00:12:23.67\00:12:25.07 which I believe that I have 00:12:25.11\00:12:26.61 and you have the responsibility of being 00:12:26.64\00:12:29.54 and I often say the watchman on the wall 00:12:29.58\00:12:32.31 watching the things, 00:12:32.35\00:12:33.68 it's not just like you said one piece at a time 00:12:33.72\00:12:36.79 and trying to discover, 00:12:36.82\00:12:38.35 you know, the copyediting problems 00:12:38.39\00:12:41.09 or a copy issues 00:12:41.12\00:12:42.46 is the overall what is on the horizon 00:12:42.49\00:12:45.09 that we should be looking at? 00:12:45.13\00:12:46.86 Well, that we're getting close to the end of the segment, 00:12:46.90\00:12:48.90 tell me from Message's point of view 00:12:48.93\00:12:50.67 what is coming up, 00:12:50.70\00:12:52.37 it's not just one of your, two of your articles, 00:12:52.40\00:12:54.60 where do you think the challenge lies 00:12:54.64\00:12:56.81 and you can broaden it beyond religious liberty. 00:12:56.84\00:12:58.77 What is on the horizon? 00:12:58.81\00:13:00.74 What... where are you moving? 00:13:00.78\00:13:02.11 What's the burning topics of the day? 00:13:02.14\00:13:05.51 Conscience is always a big deal for us. 00:13:05.55\00:13:07.72 I believe that conscience, 00:13:07.75\00:13:09.58 how you exercise your conscience, 00:13:09.62\00:13:12.99 what you... 00:13:13.02\00:13:15.22 When you're going to exercise your conscience, 00:13:15.26\00:13:17.83 how you work in a society. 00:13:17.86\00:13:21.20 Last year we talked about Colin Kaepernick 00:13:21.23\00:13:24.17 who is being so, not just marginalized 00:13:24.20\00:13:27.90 but somehow demonized for his view, 00:13:27.94\00:13:32.77 and we're talking in his protest 00:13:32.81\00:13:35.28 of a symbolic national anthem. 00:13:35.31\00:13:38.25 And our quest is to figure out 00:13:38.28\00:13:41.48 what is it that is worth fighting for, 00:13:41.52\00:13:44.95 how do I make my case, 00:13:44.99\00:13:46.82 how do I practice in conscience 00:13:46.86\00:13:50.73 knowing what it is that God has called me to do, 00:13:50.76\00:13:53.50 that is always a big issue, 00:13:53.53\00:13:54.96 how do I continue to exercise my conscience. 00:13:55.00\00:13:57.63 I knew when I put you on the spot 00:13:57.67\00:13:59.37 that you would give a very succinct analysis 00:13:59.40\00:14:03.20 where you're heading with Message Magazine. 00:14:03.24\00:14:05.54 And I hope one day to be able to do that with Liberty. 00:14:05.57\00:14:10.85 But for now we multiply words 00:14:10.88\00:14:13.42 and if you stay with us after a short break, 00:14:13.45\00:14:15.55 we'll be back to continue the discussion 00:14:15.58\00:14:18.09 of how we apply these powerful ideas 00:14:18.12\00:14:21.49 that are embodied in this case, 00:14:21.52\00:14:23.22 in Message Magazine and Liberty Magazine. 00:14:23.26\00:14:25.53
