Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:05.37\00:00:07.90 Before the break 00:00:07.94\00:00:09.27 with Editor Carmela of Message Magazine, 00:00:09.30\00:00:13.88 I need to give an advertisement for your magazine, 00:00:13.91\00:00:17.11 one of the best, 00:00:17.15\00:00:18.48 Liberty is at least as good as Message. 00:00:18.51\00:00:22.12 No, I've always appreciated Message Magazine, 00:00:22.15\00:00:24.22 you've had some consistently, not just under your editorship, 00:00:24.25\00:00:27.72 but you continued 00:00:27.76\00:00:29.62 very thought provoking articles, 00:00:29.66\00:00:31.43 I believe. 00:00:31.46\00:00:32.79 The respect goes both ways. 00:00:32.83\00:00:34.16 I appreciate that. Well, thank you. 00:00:34.20\00:00:36.20 But we were talking about the recent decision 00:00:36.23\00:00:40.67 and we know little about the decision itself, 00:00:40.70\00:00:42.74 but a lot about the background on the so called cake case, 00:00:42.77\00:00:47.31 which is really just one skirmish 00:00:47.34\00:00:50.41 on a growing conflict that seems to many people 00:00:50.45\00:00:53.82 between gay rights and religious rights. 00:00:53.85\00:00:57.05 Do you think it has to be that way? 00:00:57.09\00:01:00.06 Should there be... 00:01:00.09\00:01:01.66 Is of necessity there a conflict 00:01:01.69\00:01:03.53 between this new civil right for this group 00:01:03.56\00:01:06.39 and religious freedom rights? 00:01:06.43\00:01:08.56 I know many people think 00:01:08.60\00:01:10.57 that there has to be a conflict. 00:01:10.60\00:01:13.54 Many people think that there will be a problem 00:01:13.57\00:01:16.00 when you recognize a legal union between gays. 00:01:16.04\00:01:21.54 And many people, on the other side, 00:01:21.58\00:01:23.35 want to also make sure that their union 00:01:23.38\00:01:26.41 is sanctioned by God in the House of Worship, 00:01:26.45\00:01:29.28 in a Christian church. 00:01:29.32\00:01:31.69 I don't have a large opinion on it. 00:01:31.72\00:01:34.32 I do believe... 00:01:34.36\00:01:35.69 And I've been reading lately, and indeed, our church, 00:01:35.72\00:01:40.03 our religious faith 00:01:40.06\00:01:41.90 has gone through great lengths 00:01:41.93\00:01:44.40 to not only investigate but to interview 00:01:44.43\00:01:48.24 and figure out what it is, how can we be more sensitive, 00:01:48.27\00:01:53.44 how can we be more welcoming 00:01:53.48\00:01:55.61 in a way that does not compromise, 00:01:55.64\00:01:58.95 you know tenets of our faith in general. 00:01:58.98\00:02:01.72 At the same time though, I don't see... 00:02:01.75\00:02:04.92 It's not easy necessarily to reconcile the two. 00:02:04.95\00:02:08.42 I am of the personal mindset 00:02:08.46\00:02:10.19 though if there is a civil right to be had 00:02:10.23\00:02:13.29 and if a person has a right to a certain thing, 00:02:13.33\00:02:15.60 they should be able to have that regardless. 00:02:15.63\00:02:18.40 But I think there's a reasonable discussion 00:02:18.43\00:02:21.37 as to whether this society 00:02:21.40\00:02:25.21 should have granted that right. 00:02:25.24\00:02:27.81 I think it was perhaps a mistake, 00:02:27.84\00:02:30.65 but it's settled civil law now. 00:02:30.68\00:02:34.48 And so 00:02:34.52\00:02:36.82 for people of Christian or any faith to challenge law 00:02:36.85\00:02:40.96 because they don't like it 00:02:40.99\00:02:42.32 as opposed to challenging the law 00:02:42.36\00:02:44.46 that asks them to forsake their higher loyalty 00:02:44.49\00:02:49.70 is a bit dangerous 00:02:49.73\00:02:51.07 because that's people of faith meddling in civil governance. 00:02:51.10\00:02:55.94 Even though they see a strong moral component, 00:02:55.97\00:02:59.11 you know... 00:02:59.14\00:03:01.14 Well, I'm going to give an example 00:03:01.18\00:03:02.68 and it was contradiction even as I thought about it... 00:03:02.71\00:03:04.68 Right. 00:03:04.71\00:03:06.08 But, you know, when you drove here, 00:03:06.11\00:03:07.45 you drove past Larry Flynt's Hustler Club 00:03:07.48\00:03:10.99 and I know Christians... 00:03:11.02\00:03:12.35 I didn't notice it, just to say. 00:03:12.39\00:03:13.72 Okay. 00:03:13.76\00:03:15.09 I've driven too many times not to notice it 00:03:15.12\00:03:16.46 because he was in the news when I first started. 00:03:16.49\00:03:18.09 Right. 00:03:18.13\00:03:19.76 It's true, some Christians have, 00:03:19.79\00:03:23.63 you know, gotten in front of that sort of groups 00:03:23.67\00:03:25.80 and abortion clinics 00:03:25.83\00:03:27.87 and made their objections known, 00:03:27.90\00:03:30.47 and that's fine. 00:03:30.51\00:03:31.84 But unless you think this is a Christian Republic 00:03:31.87\00:03:34.44 in a governmental sense, which many people do, 00:03:34.48\00:03:38.28 I don't see how a Christian can say, 00:03:38.31\00:03:40.18 "I don't like that law. 00:03:40.22\00:03:41.65 This is not the theocracy that I want, 00:03:41.68\00:03:44.35 so therefore, you know, you can't have it." 00:03:44.39\00:03:46.22 Normally, a Christian should only object to laws per se 00:03:46.25\00:03:49.89 that restrict their worship of God. 00:03:49.92\00:03:52.06 Right. 00:03:52.09\00:03:53.43 So it seems to me this is people 00:03:53.46\00:03:54.80 launching forth into social experiments basically, 00:03:54.83\00:03:58.03 and goodness knows the state is in a big one 00:03:58.07\00:04:00.64 with adopting the gay marriage I think, 00:04:00.67\00:04:02.87 I read it in an editorial once and I said, 00:04:02.90\00:04:04.27 "This is a massive experiment." 00:04:04.31\00:04:06.37 They have no idea how it'll affect 00:04:06.41\00:04:07.84 the cost of social, medical for the society, 00:04:07.88\00:04:12.58 you know, the diseases, inheritance, 00:04:12.61\00:04:15.58 you just go on and on. 00:04:15.62\00:04:17.79 I saw a television program once 00:04:17.82\00:04:19.79 that played off on the idea of that old poem, you know. 00:04:19.82\00:04:23.63 For want of a nail the shoes was lost 00:04:23.66\00:04:26.36 For want of a shoe the horse was lost 00:04:26.39\00:04:28.13 For want of a horse a battle was lost 00:04:28.16\00:04:31.03 For want of a battle a kingdom was lost 00:04:31.07\00:04:33.10 You know, the king's horse, cannot blame him. 00:04:33.13\00:04:35.80 And little things can have huge ramifications. 00:04:35.84\00:04:39.37 Right. 00:04:39.41\00:04:40.74 And so the gay marriage allowance 00:04:40.78\00:04:45.08 and the state may have its own punishment if you like, 00:04:45.11\00:04:48.08 it's disruptive. 00:04:48.12\00:04:50.02 But Christians need to deal 00:04:50.05\00:04:51.69 with the sinfully disrupted society, 00:04:51.72\00:04:53.79 we need to let our light shine, not slash away, 00:04:53.82\00:04:58.29 you know, thinking that, 00:04:58.33\00:05:00.96 you know, we're going to set it all straight 00:05:01.00\00:05:02.50 and that we're Jehu and our chariot 00:05:02.53\00:05:04.93 can chart through this and that area. 00:05:04.97\00:05:08.50 And the thing is I just don't... 00:05:08.54\00:05:10.57 There's not a clear or an easy rule for me. 00:05:10.61\00:05:14.81 When I hear you say that... 00:05:14.84\00:05:16.68 You know, yes, because maybe 00:05:16.71\00:05:18.05 we have similar backgrounds religiously, 00:05:18.08\00:05:21.12 you know, I get that, I get where you are, 00:05:21.15\00:05:23.95 at the same time, there is a human right 00:05:23.99\00:05:27.39 and I do see the parallel in this instance 00:05:27.42\00:05:30.83 when you're talking about the civil rights movement. 00:05:30.86\00:05:33.70 As a rule, I can't say, 00:05:33.73\00:05:35.93 "Don't get involved in certain things, 00:05:35.96\00:05:38.77 don't do certain things 00:05:38.80\00:05:40.74 because of your personal preference 00:05:40.77\00:05:42.64 or your moral belief." 00:05:42.67\00:05:44.44 I don't know there's a rule that I can't believe them. 00:05:44.47\00:05:46.27 I'll throw you a real curve... 00:05:46.31\00:05:47.64 Okay. 00:05:47.68\00:05:49.01 And already you've figured I can do it. 00:05:49.04\00:05:50.38 How does this structurally differ 00:05:50.41\00:05:53.18 from what most of us are uncomfortable with, 00:05:53.21\00:05:55.52 the call from some Islamic majority communities 00:05:55.55\00:05:59.82 in America 00:05:59.85\00:06:01.19 that they would luxury a little? 00:06:01.22\00:06:04.06 We find that socially troublesome, 00:06:04.09\00:06:07.10 not just from a religious point of view 00:06:07.13\00:06:09.16 but undergirding the expectation 00:06:09.20\00:06:11.83 on the cake and all the rest, 00:06:11.87\00:06:13.97 is that as a Christian community, 00:06:14.00\00:06:15.50 we're just going to prohibit anything 00:06:15.54\00:06:17.91 that defends our practice of religion. 00:06:17.94\00:06:21.14 That's what it boils down to, doesn't it? 00:06:21.18\00:06:23.21 Sometimes, sometimes not. 00:06:23.24\00:06:25.21 I know I sound like a lawyer really to you, but... 00:06:25.25\00:06:27.18 No, no. 00:06:27.22\00:06:28.55 You need to sound like a lawyer. 00:06:28.58\00:06:29.92 Sometimes I think that, 00:06:29.95\00:06:31.29 you know, in the case that we were talking 00:06:31.32\00:06:32.69 should we allow... 00:06:32.72\00:06:34.06 I mean, on one hand, 00:06:34.09\00:06:35.42 you could make a good argument 00:06:35.46\00:06:36.79 that the government that is locally based, 00:06:36.83\00:06:40.96 that is the seed of government, that is, 00:06:41.00\00:06:43.30 you know, it rests with those elected, 00:06:43.33\00:06:45.93 it rests with them. 00:06:45.97\00:06:47.30 And so on one hand you can say 00:06:47.34\00:06:50.21 to have another body that officiates, 00:06:50.24\00:06:52.87 makes their own laws and... 00:06:52.91\00:06:54.61 You know, and to rise to that 00:06:54.64\00:06:56.91 and take on that responsibility for themselves, 00:06:56.95\00:07:00.82 that is problematic in any government 00:07:00.85\00:07:03.52 or any society on one hand but... 00:07:03.55\00:07:04.89 Well, you're superimposing one legal system on another. 00:07:04.92\00:07:06.72 Yes, yes. 00:07:06.76\00:07:08.09 But at the same time though, 00:07:08.12\00:07:09.72 you think about this anterior case, 00:07:09.76\00:07:12.09 if I could say that the right way, 00:07:12.13\00:07:13.66 if I hadn't pronounce it correctly, 00:07:13.70\00:07:15.86 you know, we're not going to target 00:07:15.90\00:07:19.27 or attack any one group 00:07:19.30\00:07:21.87 because of who they are 00:07:21.90\00:07:23.24 and we're not going to make laws 00:07:23.27\00:07:24.61 that are directed toward them. 00:07:24.64\00:07:25.97 So, you know, there is always... 00:07:26.01\00:07:27.98 Well, there's a lot of subtleties on this, 00:07:28.01\00:07:29.38 you're right. 00:07:29.41\00:07:30.75 Yes, there's always a nuance that, you know, 00:07:30.78\00:07:32.58 it is hard and I don't think we should at any point 00:07:32.61\00:07:37.29 approach people 00:07:37.32\00:07:38.82 or situations with that broad brush rule, 00:07:38.85\00:07:42.32 and I believe that's the way Jesus would want us to do it, 00:07:42.36\00:07:44.46 you know, it's just to be more individual. 00:07:44.49\00:07:46.96 I'm talking to you, what are your needs, 00:07:47.00\00:07:49.30 what are the things that you feel 00:07:49.33\00:07:51.80 that you need to be a part of this society, 00:07:51.83\00:07:54.90 where do I fit in, how do you relate to me, 00:07:54.94\00:07:57.34 how do I relate to you, 00:07:57.37\00:07:58.71 and how can I make the institutions around, 00:07:58.74\00:08:01.44 being inclusive of you 00:08:01.48\00:08:02.84 and your needs and your family's needs. 00:08:02.88\00:08:04.81 Yeah. 00:08:04.85\00:08:06.18 And you've pretty much described 00:08:06.21\00:08:08.05 the goal of a Christian presence 00:08:08.08\00:08:10.72 in a society to be... 00:08:10.75\00:08:14.02 Not just within a closed area 00:08:14.06\00:08:16.42 but to reach out and to make a difference. 00:08:16.46\00:08:19.49 We like to think 00:08:19.53\00:08:21.26 that Christianity does that automatically, 00:08:21.30\00:08:23.37 but probably not unless you make the effort to... 00:08:23.40\00:08:28.70 I know, the pioneer of our church Ellen White, 00:08:28.74\00:08:32.04 when she lived in Australia, 00:08:32.07\00:08:33.74 said that she took flowers and cakes and stuff 00:08:33.78\00:08:36.11 to her neighbors, reached out. 00:08:36.14\00:08:37.65 Right. 00:08:37.68\00:08:39.01 And... 00:08:39.05\00:08:40.52 And I love it when you say that. 00:08:40.55\00:08:41.98 I don't know if we should take cakes 00:08:42.02\00:08:44.62 to this group, but... 00:08:44.65\00:08:45.99 I believe there needs to be a lot more though. 00:08:46.02\00:08:48.56 Of course. 00:08:48.59\00:08:49.99 We're talking about... 00:08:50.03\00:08:51.36 And if I could just say that recently, 00:08:51.39\00:08:53.13 they have come out with a whole study, 00:08:53.16\00:08:55.73 the whole social science 00:08:55.76\00:08:59.07 and they've discovered the loneliness epidemic. 00:08:59.10\00:09:01.90 Have you read about this? 00:09:01.94\00:09:03.27 The loneliness epidemic, 00:09:03.30\00:09:04.64 where people do not have any interaction, 00:09:04.67\00:09:07.08 they do not have close friends that they can talk to, 00:09:07.11\00:09:09.94 much less any heartfelt or deep discussion of anything 00:09:09.98\00:09:14.48 that matters to people, 00:09:14.52\00:09:15.98 and that hurts us as a whole and... 00:09:16.02\00:09:18.39 Well, I think that's one of the key elements 00:09:18.42\00:09:21.02 of the root of a collapse of a coherent society. 00:09:21.06\00:09:24.93 It's not just an emotional deficit 00:09:24.96\00:09:26.63 for the individuals, 00:09:26.66\00:09:28.20 you can't have a society sustain long 00:09:28.23\00:09:30.37 when people are not bound to other people strongly. 00:09:30.40\00:09:33.44 Right. 00:09:33.47\00:09:34.80 I love that, the way you said that. 00:09:34.84\00:09:36.17 Have you heard the... 00:09:36.20\00:09:37.54 I heard a study, an experiment not long ago, 00:09:37.57\00:09:40.54 I thought it was very interesting, 00:09:40.58\00:09:41.91 where they set up a man in a room to do and they say, 00:09:41.94\00:09:44.81 "We want you to go on the computer, 00:09:44.85\00:09:46.18 we want you to play catch with two other people." 00:09:46.21\00:09:48.18 Did you see that? No. 00:09:48.22\00:09:49.55 That was very... 00:09:49.58\00:09:50.92 But I know the dynamic you're talking about. 00:09:50.95\00:09:52.29 Right, right. 00:09:52.32\00:09:53.66 Well, you know, he's supposed to toss the ball 00:09:53.69\00:09:55.02 after a while he's playing with them 00:09:55.06\00:09:56.39 and the other people stop tossing the ball to him 00:09:56.42\00:09:58.76 and they're playing together, and they have the man's head, 00:09:58.79\00:10:02.43 his brain is set up with, 00:10:02.46\00:10:05.10 you know, monitors and everything. 00:10:05.13\00:10:06.63 They realized that the hurt that he felt 00:10:06.67\00:10:09.44 when the imaginary people because... 00:10:09.47\00:10:11.11 I thought it was something else you were saying 00:10:11.14\00:10:12.54 but I haven't seen that. 00:10:12.57\00:10:13.91 Yeah, it was two computers that he was playing with, 00:10:13.94\00:10:15.81 it wasn't another people, 00:10:15.84\00:10:17.18 and so they programmed the computer 00:10:17.21\00:10:18.55 to stop throwing the ball to him. 00:10:18.58\00:10:20.38 The rejection and the pain that he felt... 00:10:20.42\00:10:23.35 Well, we've all been there in grade school, 00:10:23.39\00:10:25.52 you're not picked on the team court little later 00:10:25.55\00:10:27.82 when you're home. 00:10:27.86\00:10:29.19 It registered in his brain the same place 00:10:29.22\00:10:30.86 as your pain center. 00:10:30.89\00:10:32.23 Yeah. 00:10:32.26\00:10:33.60 And so if you want to get rid of that 00:10:33.63\00:10:35.40 and feel better, you take a Tylenol. 00:10:35.43\00:10:37.13 And there's no question that the true religion 00:10:37.17\00:10:39.10 and the religion that Jesus brought 00:10:39.13\00:10:40.94 was to relieve those pain centers, wasn't it? 00:10:40.97\00:10:42.77 Absolutely. 00:10:42.80\00:10:44.14 I believe there's something that every one of us could do 00:10:44.17\00:10:46.21 and I would like to be able to make sure 00:10:46.24\00:10:49.28 that the people around me 00:10:49.31\00:10:50.85 recognize what it means to be able to reach out to people, 00:10:50.88\00:10:56.52 the loneliness, the massacres, 00:10:56.55\00:10:58.75 the violence can be stopped and it can all stop with me 00:10:58.79\00:11:01.76 if I intervene. 00:11:01.79\00:11:03.12 Food and baking 00:11:07.10\00:11:09.43 is an important part of life, 00:11:09.46\00:11:11.53 and when you think spiritual things 00:11:11.57\00:11:13.47 or at least religious history, it pops up periodically. 00:11:13.50\00:11:17.74 I think of Gideon meeting the angel 00:11:17.77\00:11:21.11 and the cakes were baked on a hot stone, 00:11:21.14\00:11:24.58 I think of hospitality being extended 00:11:24.61\00:11:27.98 which involve baking and other things. 00:11:28.02\00:11:30.22 Abraham and the visitors that came 00:11:30.25\00:11:33.19 turned out to be angels, 00:11:33.22\00:11:35.49 and I wonder sometimes, Christian bakers, 00:11:35.52\00:11:39.39 cake makers and others, how do they know 00:11:39.43\00:11:43.13 whether they are entertaining angels 00:11:43.16\00:11:45.70 or the regular sinners. 00:11:45.73\00:11:48.10 And while the Supreme Court 00:11:48.14\00:11:50.14 have taken a good protective decision, 00:11:50.17\00:11:53.17 we need to look more and more at how we are charitably 00:11:53.21\00:11:57.18 extending the hospitality to others, 00:11:57.21\00:12:00.85 unbelievers even, that cakes and food 00:12:00.88\00:12:04.29 and the common human occurrences 00:12:04.32\00:12:05.82 remind us of. 00:12:05.85\00:12:08.16 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:12:08.19\00:12:11.76
