Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:27.52\00:00:29.62 This is your program 00:00:29.66\00:00:30.99 featuring up-to-date news, views, and discussion 00:00:31.03\00:00:33.83 on religious liberty events. 00:00:33.86\00:00:36.16 My name is Lincoln Steed, Editor of Liberty Magazine. 00:00:36.20\00:00:39.83 And my guest on this program is Carmela Monk Crawford, 00:00:39.87\00:00:43.24 Editor of Message Magazine. 00:00:43.27\00:00:45.04 And I've got to be careful, 00:00:45.07\00:00:46.41 I don't mispronounce your Magazine 00:00:46.44\00:00:48.81 just as I used to at Listen Magazine, 00:00:48.84\00:00:51.45 and Listen and Lincoln and Liberty 00:00:51.48\00:00:53.92 can all get soup together. 00:00:53.95\00:00:55.38 Right. 00:00:55.42\00:00:56.75 But thank you for coming again on this program. 00:00:56.79\00:00:58.19 It's an honor to be here. 00:00:58.22\00:00:59.55 In the previous program, we were... 00:00:59.59\00:01:02.32 I was casting about and sucking you in 00:01:02.36\00:01:04.09 from all directions on our topic. 00:01:04.13\00:01:06.16 But you said something 00:01:06.19\00:01:07.53 that related to where we are today 00:01:07.56\00:01:10.47 in weather dislocation 00:01:10.50\00:01:12.83 and natural disasters and so on. 00:01:12.87\00:01:15.27 And by the way, I have an email 00:01:15.30\00:01:18.61 from a well intentioned Adventist 00:01:18.64\00:01:21.08 sent me a few weeks ago that... 00:01:21.11\00:01:23.11 I think it was two days ago. 00:01:23.14\00:01:24.91 According to him, 00:01:24.95\00:01:26.28 a prophetic moment was going to take place 00:01:26.31\00:01:27.75 where the whole West Coast 00:01:27.78\00:01:29.25 basically was going to fall into the ocean and so on. 00:01:29.28\00:01:33.42 People worry about these things, 00:01:33.46\00:01:35.59 natural calamities. 00:01:35.62\00:01:38.99 Our present administration, I think, are in denial, 00:01:39.03\00:01:42.66 like, "There's no such thing as global warming." 00:01:42.70\00:01:44.53 And I think many of the ruling parties say it, 00:01:44.57\00:01:47.34 but most people know as they travel around, 00:01:47.37\00:01:50.07 and as they live through life in the US, 00:01:50.11\00:01:52.11 things are not quite right. 00:01:52.14\00:01:54.11 That's right. 00:01:54.14\00:01:55.48 How does this relate to spiritual vision 00:01:55.51\00:01:59.01 and how might it relate to continued 00:01:59.05\00:02:01.12 or lack of continued civil and religious liberties? 00:02:01.15\00:02:03.79 You got thoughts on this? 00:02:03.82\00:02:06.19 I have some thoughts. 00:02:06.22\00:02:08.56 I do believe that continued civil liberties 00:02:08.59\00:02:13.19 are implicated by what we're seeing here. 00:02:13.23\00:02:16.67 I was reading just recently that the United States, 00:02:16.70\00:02:21.44 the Department of Defense, 00:02:21.47\00:02:23.67 70% or 76% 00:02:23.71\00:02:27.21 of the green house gases created by the United States 00:02:27.24\00:02:32.28 is done by the Department of Defense 00:02:32.31\00:02:34.85 outside of the United States, 00:02:34.88\00:02:37.25 very interesting that our Department of Defense 00:02:37.29\00:02:39.85 is creating this issue 00:02:39.89\00:02:42.82 and outside of the borders of the United States. 00:02:42.86\00:02:45.03 True, what activity, what sort of activity is that? 00:02:45.06\00:02:47.30 Through its maneuvers, through the testing 00:02:47.33\00:02:50.07 wherever it is around the world. 00:02:50.10\00:02:52.53 And it's not as readily regulated 00:02:52.57\00:02:55.97 as if it was onshore. 00:02:56.00\00:02:58.04 What am I trying to say by this? 00:02:58.07\00:02:59.41 I think that, for one thing, 00:02:59.44\00:03:02.14 many people in the Christian community 00:03:02.18\00:03:05.51 do not look at that as, 00:03:05.55\00:03:07.32 you know, an issue that we need to think about. 00:03:07.35\00:03:09.58 You know, of course, the Lord wouldn't let us 00:03:09.62\00:03:11.22 blow up this planet 00:03:11.25\00:03:12.59 or the Lord is not going to allow that to happen. 00:03:12.62\00:03:14.56 Yet, we have a stewardship responsibility 00:03:14.59\00:03:17.39 to make sure that we are taking care of things. 00:03:17.43\00:03:19.89 But the implications for people, 00:03:19.93\00:03:23.03 the famine just like back in the biblical times, 00:03:23.06\00:03:26.23 you have people who don't have access to water, 00:03:26.27\00:03:30.67 or people who don't have access to food. 00:03:30.71\00:03:33.27 You still have those same movements happening now, 00:03:33.31\00:03:36.31 and we just don't call it 00:03:36.34\00:03:37.68 or don't look at it the same way, 00:03:37.71\00:03:39.05 but the migration... 00:03:39.08\00:03:40.42 But the military have figured it out. 00:03:40.45\00:03:41.78 Yes. 00:03:41.82\00:03:43.42 And the droughts and natural calamities 00:03:43.45\00:03:46.19 are part of a security matrix 00:03:46.22\00:03:48.86 that they are more and more looking at. 00:03:48.89\00:03:50.89 And in reality, I mean, let's get back to the Bible. 00:03:50.93\00:03:54.00 Most of the battles were fought over wells 00:03:54.03\00:03:56.06 and access to fields of plenty grain 00:03:56.10\00:03:59.57 which is livelihood, 00:03:59.60\00:04:00.94 so the world hasn't changed much in that regard. 00:04:00.97\00:04:02.50 Basic resources, basic resources. 00:04:02.54\00:04:04.24 Yeah. 00:04:04.27\00:04:05.61 And a lot of what's going on in the Middle East, 00:04:05.64\00:04:08.18 you know, we heard about the Israel 00:04:08.21\00:04:13.18 taking the Golan Heights from Syria. 00:04:13.21\00:04:15.92 But what's at play there? 00:04:15.95\00:04:17.29 It was not just a strategic place 00:04:17.32\00:04:18.72 to fire down on the settlements, 00:04:18.75\00:04:20.99 it was a water source issue. 00:04:21.02\00:04:23.63 And Israel and Syria have huge dispute over water, 00:04:23.66\00:04:29.16 which originates from those men there on the Golan Heights. 00:04:29.20\00:04:34.34 So Syria now is short of the water 00:04:34.37\00:04:36.81 but they were denying it to Israel before. 00:04:36.84\00:04:39.41 Yeah, think about the day zero 00:04:39.44\00:04:42.04 without water in Cape Town, South Africa. 00:04:42.08\00:04:45.05 It was Cape Town. 00:04:45.08\00:04:46.55 And just think about it. 00:04:46.58\00:04:48.65 Then we think about the storms and the implications for people 00:04:48.68\00:04:51.85 such as in Puerto Rico, and then last year storms 00:04:51.89\00:04:54.49 that affected people in Houston and other places 00:04:54.52\00:04:58.43 where it's not just, 00:04:58.46\00:05:00.60 you know, what happens in the climate 00:05:00.63\00:05:03.16 but what happens socially and structurally. 00:05:03.20\00:05:06.37 How do we move people out of harm's way, 00:05:06.40\00:05:09.67 and how do we put them back 00:05:09.70\00:05:12.01 where they can have a prosperous life 00:05:12.04\00:05:14.08 or even just a stable life? 00:05:14.11\00:05:17.41 And what do we do 00:05:17.45\00:05:18.78 when we're tired of supplying aid or FEMA support, 00:05:18.81\00:05:23.45 if FEMA support got to them at all? 00:05:23.49\00:05:26.22 This is a very big issue, 00:05:26.25\00:05:28.06 especially for people who do not have the resources 00:05:28.09\00:05:31.53 to get out of harm's way. 00:05:31.56\00:05:32.89 Well, I don't know 00:05:32.93\00:05:34.76 that this is proven or fully acknowledged 00:05:34.80\00:05:36.87 but I think anybody watching, 00:05:36.90\00:05:39.57 had to wonder where the FEMA was less committed 00:05:39.60\00:05:43.00 to general help or making decisions 00:05:43.04\00:05:46.31 about where they warranted assistance, 00:05:46.34\00:05:50.01 and I've quoted on this program before 00:05:50.05\00:05:52.18 but it really affected me once. 00:05:52.21\00:05:55.12 I was watching news report from the United Nations 00:05:55.15\00:06:00.96 on population issues and starvation and so on. 00:06:00.99\00:06:04.56 And the woman at the time, in charge of this whole area, 00:06:04.59\00:06:08.63 came out and gave a press conference, 00:06:08.66\00:06:10.13 and she said, 00:06:10.17\00:06:11.50 "We have become like God, 00:06:11.53\00:06:13.34 we will decide who will live and who will die." 00:06:13.37\00:06:16.20 So if you choose to help this area but not this, 00:06:16.24\00:06:19.87 you're making a choice. 00:06:19.91\00:06:21.81 Those people are expendable. 00:06:21.84\00:06:23.65 And I think clearly, 00:06:23.68\00:06:25.78 it's just logical with limited resources, 00:06:25.81\00:06:28.95 governments and the world 00:06:28.98\00:06:31.15 is probably going to have to make these choices 00:06:31.19\00:06:33.15 as to what's important. 00:06:33.19\00:06:34.99 And part of the choice, 00:06:35.02\00:06:36.36 I think they've already signaled 00:06:36.39\00:06:38.46 as that certain liberties may be a luxury 00:06:38.49\00:06:41.96 we can't allow in a time of stress. 00:06:42.00\00:06:44.63 Don't you believe though 00:06:44.67\00:06:46.00 that more than a question of resource limit 00:06:46.03\00:06:51.94 is a question of priority setting? 00:06:51.97\00:06:54.54 Well, that's what I was saying. 00:06:54.58\00:06:55.91 That's what you're saying, is it? 00:06:55.94\00:06:57.28 Certain group may not... 00:06:57.31\00:06:58.65 Like in Myanmar, 00:06:58.68\00:07:02.52 they have decided the Rohingya are not on their list. 00:07:02.55\00:07:06.82 They don't want to give them education 00:07:06.86\00:07:09.52 or any social support. 00:07:09.56\00:07:12.49 You know, the Revelation talks about a group 00:07:12.53\00:07:16.56 that can neither buy nor sell 00:07:16.60\00:07:19.20 because they hold out against the global system. 00:07:19.23\00:07:22.94 And if you read, that's superficially well, 00:07:22.97\00:07:25.01 it's just lashing out and persecuting this group. 00:07:25.04\00:07:28.51 But maybe someone objects to the priorities 00:07:28.54\00:07:31.85 that are set in the modern world, 00:07:31.88\00:07:34.08 and they increase their marginalization, 00:07:34.12\00:07:36.52 and they're just put off to the side. 00:07:36.55\00:07:39.62 There's a document that I know, you and I have discussed. 00:07:39.65\00:07:43.32 I don't know how well you read it. 00:07:43.36\00:07:45.16 The pope's document 00:07:45.19\00:07:48.66 on the environment, 00:07:48.70\00:07:52.10 I'm trying to think of the Latin name. 00:07:52.13\00:07:55.20 They all have Latin names 00:07:55.24\00:07:56.57 but it's the environmental document. 00:07:56.60\00:07:58.41 And quite unique for a spiritual leader, 00:07:58.44\00:08:02.61 he's tackling a civil problem 00:08:02.64\00:08:04.65 and addressing it to all people not just religious people. 00:08:04.68\00:08:07.88 And he says there, 00:08:07.92\00:08:09.25 "If we don't solve this problem of the environment, 00:08:09.28\00:08:12.02 we're all going to die." 00:08:12.05\00:08:14.26 And his solution, which I like, from the Bible, 00:08:14.29\00:08:18.96 is that we need to honor the rhythms 00:08:18.99\00:08:21.16 inscribed in nature. 00:08:21.20\00:08:23.16 That was interesting. 00:08:23.20\00:08:24.53 The rhythm in Genesis is a day of rest. 00:08:24.57\00:08:26.30 Yes. 00:08:26.33\00:08:27.67 But then quickly devolves 00:08:27.70\00:08:29.10 into how do you celebrate that day, 00:08:29.14\00:08:31.71 and well, his theology is okay, 00:08:31.74\00:08:34.21 his application is horribly flawed, 00:08:34.24\00:08:35.78 because he recognizes the Seventh-day Sabbath 00:08:35.81\00:08:39.21 but then Sunday is fine enough for him. 00:08:39.25\00:08:41.75 But I'd be very uncomfortable 00:08:41.78\00:08:43.12 if someone says it's the seventh-day Sabbath, 00:08:43.15\00:08:45.39 therefore, globally, we will all obey the Sabbath, 00:08:45.42\00:08:48.02 it would still be antireligious liberty. 00:08:48.06\00:08:50.16 Right, right. 00:08:50.19\00:08:51.53 But we're clearly heading to a point, 00:08:51.56\00:08:54.60 you know, the ancients claim it a pretty easy, 00:08:54.63\00:08:56.23 you know, the storm came in last night, 00:08:56.26\00:08:58.33 the gods are angry with us. 00:08:58.37\00:08:59.70 Right. 00:08:59.73\00:09:01.07 We know that's not functionally quite correct, 00:09:01.10\00:09:03.97 but when the calamities increase, 00:09:04.01\00:09:06.24 and we become spiritual 00:09:06.27\00:09:08.34 hoping that God will show us favor somehow. 00:09:08.38\00:09:10.95 You don't want a group that worship differently 00:09:10.98\00:09:12.95 that seem to be swatting your revival. 00:09:12.98\00:09:16.58 Correct. 00:09:16.62\00:09:17.95 I can see the lay of the land very, very clearly now. 00:09:17.99\00:09:20.72 Yes. 00:09:20.76\00:09:22.09 So we're not just talking about a military issue, 00:09:22.12\00:09:24.29 we're not just talking about a FEMA relief. 00:09:24.33\00:09:27.83 We're talking about the continuation 00:09:27.86\00:09:29.96 of the righter people to think and worship differently. 00:09:30.00\00:09:32.87 I'm positive, it's around the corner. 00:09:32.90\00:09:34.84 Yeah, the connection is there, the connection is there. 00:09:34.87\00:09:37.87 And I think what is, say, 00:09:37.91\00:09:39.67 you know, where I think, I go a different viewpoint 00:09:39.71\00:09:42.88 because when you're talking about 00:09:42.91\00:09:44.25 how there are certain people 00:09:44.28\00:09:45.61 set up and marginalized and left vulnerable, 00:09:45.65\00:09:49.05 I think of the families who live around big business, 00:09:49.08\00:09:53.96 big farms, big chicken plants, and things like that. 00:09:53.99\00:09:57.69 That's a whole another situation. 00:09:57.73\00:09:59.06 Well, I give you, 00:09:59.09\00:10:00.43 people have about forgotten them now 00:10:00.46\00:10:01.80 but one word, Bhopal. 00:10:01.83\00:10:03.16 You remember the Bhopal? Yes, I remember that. 00:10:03.20\00:10:04.53 I mean, in India, forget the factory 00:10:04.57\00:10:07.17 but there was a factory. 00:10:07.20\00:10:08.64 And thousands of people around it were... 00:10:08.67\00:10:12.87 Many died but their very existence 00:10:12.91\00:10:15.78 was threatened by this machine or this factory. 00:10:15.81\00:10:20.72 And in reality, I think... 00:10:20.75\00:10:24.19 You know, the dark satanic mills 00:10:24.22\00:10:27.06 of William Blake in England. 00:10:27.09\00:10:29.59 The whole industrial revolution is premised on that idea 00:10:29.62\00:10:32.43 that some people are going to be sacrificed 00:10:32.46\00:10:34.96 for our progress. 00:10:35.00\00:10:36.67 Right, right. 00:10:36.70\00:10:38.03 And we see that today, like we say, 00:10:38.07\00:10:40.24 these large farms that are creating, 00:10:40.27\00:10:45.04 and they're spraying maneuver around 00:10:45.07\00:10:48.98 and it affects the health of the people who live there, 00:10:49.01\00:10:53.05 they're just expended 00:10:53.08\00:10:54.78 for the purposes of this progress 00:10:54.82\00:10:58.09 of this business in this industry. 00:10:58.12\00:11:00.86 I don't know, and I can't say what the end point is, 00:11:00.89\00:11:06.13 and what it will lead and how it will stack up. 00:11:06.16\00:11:08.96 But we can say as we watch this, 00:11:09.00\00:11:11.80 and I think you made that point in our earlier program, 00:11:11.83\00:11:14.24 that we can say the things are stacking up 00:11:14.27\00:11:17.51 and it does not require your hold or your degree 00:11:17.54\00:11:22.38 and prophecy to be able to see the things are stacking up 00:11:22.41\00:11:27.15 and the vulnerability of so many people right now. 00:11:27.18\00:11:30.79 But it does require little mental attention 00:11:30.82\00:11:35.42 for someone to understand this. 00:11:35.46\00:11:36.79 It should. 00:11:36.83\00:11:38.16 The vast majority of people don't connect the dots on this, 00:11:38.19\00:11:40.26 so they're just sort of responding to events. 00:11:40.30\00:11:43.77 And they're going to be easily led. 00:11:43.80\00:11:46.60 And you know, you mentioned prophecy, 00:11:46.63\00:11:48.20 and that's a sub text to a lot of 00:11:48.24\00:11:49.57 what we say on religious liberty. 00:11:49.60\00:11:51.81 You're not saved by prophecy. 00:11:51.84\00:11:53.21 No. 00:11:53.24\00:11:54.58 No Christian preacher legitimately 00:11:54.61\00:11:56.04 ever made such a claim 00:11:56.08\00:11:57.98 but you can be lost by a wrong view on it 00:11:58.01\00:12:00.42 or not knowing prophecy, 00:12:00.45\00:12:02.08 because it will lead you in a wrong direction. 00:12:02.12\00:12:04.92 So I think people need to be informed 00:12:04.95\00:12:07.36 about the world around them 00:12:07.39\00:12:08.72 and to see how that does logically link 00:12:08.76\00:12:11.53 to prophetic outline, 00:12:11.56\00:12:12.89 and when the false calls for conformity comes, 00:12:12.93\00:12:15.93 they'll resist it. 00:12:15.96\00:12:18.03 Because, yes, our survival as a species, 00:12:18.07\00:12:21.70 I think is very soon to be at the point of open threat. 00:12:21.74\00:12:26.37 Yes. 00:12:26.41\00:12:27.74 But the solution is not to destroy 00:12:27.78\00:12:29.84 spiritual sensibility 00:12:29.88\00:12:31.21 because, you know, 00:12:31.25\00:12:32.68 people have known it through the ages. 00:12:32.71\00:12:34.78 You might live physically 00:12:34.82\00:12:36.28 but if you've destroyed your soul, 00:12:36.32\00:12:37.65 you've gained nothing. 00:12:37.69\00:12:39.02 Right, right. 00:12:39.05\00:12:40.39 And, you know, 00:12:40.42\00:12:41.76 and God has promised something beyond this. 00:12:41.79\00:12:43.16 But we're at the point 00:12:43.19\00:12:44.53 where people are going to be off at that choice. 00:12:44.56\00:12:46.80 You think differently and survive or a few worship 00:12:46.83\00:12:50.33 differently than we say. 00:12:50.37\00:12:51.70 You're a consumer, you're a redundant person. 00:12:51.73\00:12:56.30 And the US has been that route before. 00:12:56.34\00:12:58.91 It's seen whole peoples as not worthy of the vote. 00:12:58.94\00:13:04.81 I mentioned to you this morning before the program 00:13:04.85\00:13:07.45 that I just watched something recently 00:13:07.48\00:13:09.22 on the Chinese experience. 00:13:09.25\00:13:11.12 They were seen as sub-humans, not humans, 00:13:11.15\00:13:13.52 not welcome in this country by law 00:13:13.56\00:13:16.46 from the 1880s right till 1943. 00:13:16.49\00:13:19.39 They were forbidden to come here. 00:13:19.43\00:13:21.03 Yes. 00:13:21.06\00:13:22.40 So you don't have to imagine some dystopian future where, 00:13:22.43\00:13:26.13 even in the westernized democracy 00:13:26.17\00:13:28.40 like the US, we will have these draconian laws, 00:13:28.44\00:13:30.94 we've had them already. 00:13:30.97\00:13:32.31 Yes. 00:13:32.34\00:13:33.68 And sadly, there are plenty of people 00:13:33.71\00:13:35.04 who are still subject to what we would see as unfair 00:13:35.08\00:13:39.51 and systematically unjust structures. 00:13:39.55\00:13:44.15 And so we are seeing those right now. 00:13:44.19\00:13:46.25 And I agree, this is the kind of thing 00:13:46.29\00:13:48.72 that you have to wake up to 00:13:48.76\00:13:50.53 and start putting some stalk into it. 00:13:50.56\00:13:53.29 Yeah, you're right on this. 00:13:53.33\00:13:54.66 And I appreciate your comment, 00:13:54.70\00:13:56.03 you know, what I'm reminded of 00:13:56.06\00:13:57.40 and the Bible says to do justly, 00:13:57.43\00:13:59.40 to seek justice, 00:13:59.43\00:14:00.84 that's a very important part of seeking God. 00:14:00.87\00:14:03.81 We have to be concerned about how other people live 00:14:03.84\00:14:07.74 and how laws and principles 00:14:07.78\00:14:13.01 of human freedom are applied to them. 00:14:13.05\00:14:15.05 We can't think, "Well, it's fine. 00:14:15.08\00:14:16.42 That all exists, and take me, God." 00:14:16.45\00:14:18.95 Right. Take me. 00:14:18.99\00:14:20.72 I'm a little concerned about any church, 00:14:20.76\00:14:25.29 particularly my own church 00:14:25.33\00:14:26.66 getting wholesale involved in social justice 00:14:26.70\00:14:29.90 because that can become an end in itself. 00:14:29.93\00:14:31.63 We can't create heaven on earth, 00:14:31.67\00:14:33.67 but we cannot let injustice stand. 00:14:33.70\00:14:36.67 We need to speak to, 00:14:36.71\00:14:38.04 we need to draw people out from that, 00:14:38.07\00:14:39.67 but pull them on to the Promised Land, 00:14:39.71\00:14:41.44 back to Exodus, we're moving somewhere. 00:14:41.48\00:14:43.65 Right. 00:14:43.68\00:14:45.01 We can never sought this place out. 00:14:45.05\00:14:47.48 And I'm trying to sort of draw on history to make comments 00:14:47.52\00:14:50.69 but I know you can't unravel history, 00:14:50.72\00:14:53.49 it's baggage you take with you. 00:14:53.52\00:14:55.66 We'll be back after a break. Stay with us. 00:14:55.69\00:14:57.76 And we'll continue this discussion. 00:14:57.79\00:14:59.13 Thank you. 00:14:59.16\00:15:00.50
