Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:05.43\00:00:07.04 Before the break, with Carmela Monk Crawford, 00:00:07.07\00:00:10.47 I was trying to have her unwrap 00:00:10.51\00:00:13.17 some of the history of Message Magazine. 00:00:13.21\00:00:16.01 And, of course, its history has a lot of the history 00:00:16.04\00:00:18.85 of the United States, at least in the modern era. 00:00:18.88\00:00:22.45 And that's not over, is it? 00:00:22.48\00:00:23.89 No. No, it's not. 00:00:23.92\00:00:25.25 Even since the... 00:00:25.29\00:00:26.82 Or at the time of the last election 00:00:26.86\00:00:28.19 and ongoing was things like black lives matter. 00:00:28.22\00:00:30.79 Yes. 00:00:30.83\00:00:33.03 We were having to fight the same wars 00:00:33.06\00:00:34.80 for civil rights in my view. 00:00:34.83\00:00:37.23 Yes, right. 00:00:37.27\00:00:38.60 So Message must be doing very, very well, right? 00:00:38.63\00:00:40.80 Oh, what a time it is. 00:00:40.84\00:00:42.17 What a time. 00:00:42.20\00:00:43.54 I was telling someone just last year, I said, 00:00:43.57\00:00:46.37 as an African-American woman, 00:00:46.41\00:00:49.34 I am stressed with the amount of topics 00:00:49.38\00:00:53.11 and the things that are happening 00:00:53.15\00:00:54.48 on a day-to-day basis. 00:00:54.52\00:00:55.98 The things that are happening, the rollbacks, 00:00:56.02\00:00:58.42 the voter suppression, the charges of voter fraud, 00:00:58.45\00:01:02.92 the idea of harassment and sexual assault, 00:01:02.96\00:01:08.76 the idea of so many different things, 00:01:08.80\00:01:10.67 the health disparities, access to health care, 00:01:10.70\00:01:13.94 lack of access to health care, 00:01:13.97\00:01:16.00 our right issues where community policies, 00:01:16.04\00:01:19.37 such as what's happened in Flint, 00:01:19.41\00:01:21.41 affect people's health... 00:01:21.44\00:01:22.91 Right, absolutely. 00:01:22.94\00:01:24.28 Which is such an egregious case, 00:01:24.31\00:01:25.91 where people are sick. 00:01:25.95\00:01:27.55 And I was looking... 00:01:27.58\00:01:28.92 I think I told you a few weeks ago. 00:01:28.95\00:01:31.85 We were in a seminar... 00:01:31.89\00:01:33.96 Not a seminar but it was a workshop, 00:01:33.99\00:01:36.42 they were discussing some research, 00:01:36.46\00:01:38.49 and they were looking at a map of Chicago, 00:01:38.53\00:01:41.23 overlay of Chicago. 00:01:41.26\00:01:43.47 And you've heard so much in the news 00:01:43.50\00:01:45.13 about how Chicago is the murder capital, 00:01:45.17\00:01:47.97 which is not true, 00:01:48.00\00:01:49.34 and you've heard so much about the violence, 00:01:49.37\00:01:51.07 but you know, they do have, 00:01:51.11\00:01:52.44 you know, some different issues, 00:01:52.47\00:01:53.91 and a cycle of police to citizen interactions 00:01:53.94\00:01:59.88 that end up badly to say the least 00:01:59.91\00:02:02.22 and a cycle of higher incarceration rates 00:02:02.25\00:02:05.95 and mass confinement rates for people of color. 00:02:05.99\00:02:09.16 And we are looking at the map and the map of Chicago 00:02:09.19\00:02:12.56 is almost like a, I would say, a boot, 00:02:12.59\00:02:15.30 more like a stocking shape map, 00:02:15.33\00:02:18.03 and the map talks about violence, 00:02:18.07\00:02:20.84 so that's one thing. 00:02:20.87\00:02:22.20 The demographics you're talking about, yeah. 00:02:22.24\00:02:23.57 Yes, demographics, and you're looking at violence, 00:02:23.61\00:02:24.94 then you're looking at foreclosures, 00:02:24.97\00:02:27.74 then you're looking at jobless rates, 00:02:27.78\00:02:31.01 then after all of those things that seem to put the folks 00:02:31.05\00:02:35.42 in this area at a disadvantage, you look at the same people 00:02:35.45\00:02:40.09 are exposed to lead to the tune 00:02:40.12\00:02:43.59 of 75 to 100% of the people have lead exposure 00:02:43.63\00:02:48.40 and lead poisoning. 00:02:48.43\00:02:49.80 How are people supposed to grow? 00:02:49.83\00:02:52.57 How are people supposed to prosper? 00:02:52.60\00:02:54.87 How are they supposed to move on 00:02:54.90\00:02:56.44 when you have those kinds of things happening? 00:02:56.47\00:02:58.21 And that's what happened in Flint. 00:02:58.24\00:02:59.57 It's a multi-faceted threat... 00:02:59.61\00:03:00.94 A multi-faceted... 00:03:00.98\00:03:02.31 To people's security 00:03:02.34\00:03:05.28 and even knowledge of the world as it is. 00:03:05.31\00:03:07.58 But the reason why I say that though is when you tell... 00:03:07.62\00:03:10.79 You're open by talking about Message 00:03:10.82\00:03:14.06 and where we consistently are... 00:03:14.09\00:03:16.29 The battle is not over, is it? 00:03:16.32\00:03:17.66 The battle is not only over but the consistent thread 00:03:17.69\00:03:20.66 is the impact on people of color, 00:03:20.70\00:03:24.30 in particular African-Americans. 00:03:24.33\00:03:26.77 And so we do have a great multitude. 00:03:26.80\00:03:28.14 There's no question. 00:03:28.17\00:03:29.50 Clearly, it's a little broader, 00:03:29.54\00:03:31.77 minorities and particularly ethnic minorities, 00:03:31.81\00:03:36.38 but minorities for other reasons, 00:03:36.41\00:03:40.08 the way I would put it, 00:03:40.12\00:03:41.65 the underclass in America is larger 00:03:41.68\00:03:44.22 than people will imagine and the underclass in America 00:03:44.25\00:03:47.86 is as badly off as any underclass 00:03:47.89\00:03:49.69 in the Western world. 00:03:49.72\00:03:51.29 Interesting you say that. 00:03:51.33\00:03:52.66 And the system doesn't care to deal with them. 00:03:52.69\00:03:56.20 Right now, we are at a time in our country 00:03:56.23\00:03:58.63 where we're seeing the people, 00:03:58.67\00:04:00.40 the incomes runaway for that highest end, 00:04:00.44\00:04:04.37 and people who are on the lower end 00:04:04.41\00:04:07.31 are just blossoming. 00:04:07.34\00:04:08.94 So I was reading a statistic, you know, of course, 00:04:08.98\00:04:11.11 you have the measure of the poverty level, 00:04:11.15\00:04:13.58 the poverty index, but there's another index 00:04:13.62\00:04:16.08 that doesn't just address income 00:04:16.12\00:04:20.29 and what people bring in, 00:04:20.32\00:04:21.89 but it also looks at the income as you match it 00:04:21.92\00:04:25.23 against your need for your housing, 00:04:25.26\00:04:27.46 need for your clothing, need for everything, 00:04:27.50\00:04:30.90 just to live, and they say, 00:04:30.93\00:04:32.87 at least 43% of the people 00:04:32.90\00:04:36.94 are dealing with that kind of income 00:04:36.97\00:04:39.94 or money strain. 00:04:39.97\00:04:42.21 It's a very, very interesting time. 00:04:42.24\00:04:44.25 And so like you said, it's not just African-American. 00:04:44.28\00:04:46.11 No. 00:04:46.15\00:04:47.52 But you know they were the singular group 00:04:47.55\00:04:51.82 that was systematically kept down, mistreated, 00:04:51.85\00:04:55.02 and then after the civil war and reconstruction were picked 00:04:55.06\00:04:58.36 on more than others and they're emblematic 00:04:58.39\00:05:01.03 and central to what's going on this. 00:05:01.06\00:05:03.67 You can't dismiss this single group, 00:05:03.70\00:05:08.30 but it's not just them. 00:05:08.34\00:05:09.67 And the U.S. has not an enviable record 00:05:09.70\00:05:13.11 in dealing with minorities generally. 00:05:13.14\00:05:15.01 Some minorities have moved on 00:05:15.04\00:05:18.55 and up like the Irish. 00:05:18.58\00:05:23.28 And I wouldn't consider them an Irish, they're not of... 00:05:23.32\00:05:26.99 But they were not just ethnic, they were religious minority. 00:05:27.02\00:05:29.16 Mm-hmm. 00:05:29.19\00:05:30.53 So when they came, 00:05:30.56\00:05:32.33 they stood out with their accent, 00:05:32.36\00:05:33.70 their religion and overall in the Protestant country 00:05:33.73\00:05:37.97 that Catholicism caused problems. 00:05:38.00\00:05:40.50 And, you know, I don't know 00:05:40.54\00:05:42.17 if you know the history of the Irish. 00:05:42.20\00:05:44.91 At one stage, there was a riot in New York City. 00:05:44.94\00:05:49.68 It was around 00:05:49.71\00:05:52.75 close to the civil war as I remember. 00:05:52.78\00:05:55.58 Fifty thousand people rampaged through the streets 00:05:55.62\00:05:58.19 for about three days, killing any Irishmen 00:05:58.22\00:06:02.09 they could lay their hands on. 00:06:02.12\00:06:04.73 Horrible stuff. Right. 00:06:04.76\00:06:06.76 And for different reasons, different minorities 00:06:06.80\00:06:08.76 have popped up and gathered the ire. 00:06:08.80\00:06:12.00 We were talking before the program 00:06:12.03\00:06:13.37 about the Chinese. 00:06:13.40\00:06:14.74 Right. 00:06:14.77\00:06:16.10 Again, horrible mistreatment, 00:06:16.14\00:06:18.37 not, I think, because they look different 00:06:18.41\00:06:20.41 but that was an easy way to pick on them, 00:06:20.44\00:06:22.08 but they were seen as taking away jobs 00:06:22.11\00:06:24.71 and threatening the way of life for other people and violence 00:06:24.75\00:06:28.65 and then legal restrictions followed 00:06:28.68\00:06:31.62 that you can't defend in the modern era. 00:06:31.65\00:06:33.52 No, you can't defend it at any point. 00:06:33.56\00:06:35.12 We've got a little bit of time left. 00:06:35.16\00:06:36.49 But you mentioned Chicago. 00:06:36.52\00:06:37.86 Let's talk about Chicago, 00:06:37.89\00:06:39.23 and I know I've got a few years on you. 00:06:39.26\00:06:40.60 I remember very well 1968 00:06:40.63\00:06:43.87 and the Democratic National Convention 00:06:43.90\00:06:47.34 and the rioting in Chicago. 00:06:47.37\00:06:50.01 And lately, a few times I've seen 00:06:50.04\00:06:52.31 on documentary footage recounting of that. 00:06:52.34\00:06:56.48 It's quite shocking, even at this point in time, 00:06:56.51\00:06:59.65 to see the police just, gratuitously, 00:06:59.68\00:07:03.22 hundreds of police beating young people, 00:07:03.25\00:07:06.35 some of them lying insensible on the streets, 00:07:06.39\00:07:08.22 others with their heads wide open 00:07:08.26\00:07:09.92 and blood everywhere, dragging them like dead meat 00:07:09.96\00:07:13.13 into the paddy wagons. 00:07:13.16\00:07:15.96 I mean, Chicago has had an interesting history, 00:07:16.00\00:07:19.23 and at that period, it was run like a mafia, 00:07:19.27\00:07:24.94 May Daley and his machine, 00:07:24.97\00:07:26.78 it was really temerity whole writ large in my view. 00:07:26.81\00:07:29.68 Right. 00:07:29.71\00:07:31.21 So, you know, Chicago is not out of the woods yet, 00:07:31.25\00:07:33.98 but it's come a long way from that era, 00:07:34.02\00:07:37.42 from the Al Capone, 00:07:37.45\00:07:38.79 and the prohibition era, and the crime, and so on. 00:07:38.82\00:07:41.82 So the minorities there have suffered, 00:07:41.86\00:07:45.26 but I think they are suffering 00:07:45.29\00:07:46.83 because it's been a very dysfunctional city 00:07:46.86\00:07:48.86 for a very long time. 00:07:48.90\00:07:50.60 I think minorities, particularly African-American, 00:07:50.63\00:07:53.23 suffer because there is a long history 00:07:53.27\00:07:57.34 that has not been dealt with, 00:07:57.37\00:07:59.07 structurally as well as interpersonally. 00:07:59.11\00:08:02.51 And, you know, like I said... 00:08:02.54\00:08:04.31 Like what happened, you probably don't know either, 00:08:04.35\00:08:06.51 but I call it the burden of history. 00:08:06.55\00:08:08.22 How do you get over it? 00:08:08.25\00:08:09.58 But it's real, it's huge. 00:08:09.62\00:08:10.95 It is real, and until we deal with that... 00:08:10.99\00:08:14.46 You know, I have the privilege of being here with you 00:08:14.49\00:08:17.59 the week after the Starbucks chairman 00:08:17.63\00:08:21.36 closed 8,000 Starbucks shops across the United States. 00:08:21.40\00:08:25.80 The week after Roseanne Barr writes an extremely 00:08:25.83\00:08:30.31 inflammatory and insensitive racial remark. 00:08:30.34\00:08:35.68 African-Americans have borne the brunt of this 00:08:35.71\00:08:38.28 and African-Americans have been leading the cause. 00:08:38.31\00:08:41.52 And why am I saying that? 00:08:41.55\00:08:42.88 Not to hold up what our experience has been, 00:08:42.92\00:08:47.72 but what is relevant to me, 00:08:47.76\00:08:50.19 especially in the context talking with you, 00:08:50.23\00:08:52.56 I believe that the experience 00:08:52.59\00:08:56.30 that African-Americans have gone through 00:08:56.33\00:08:58.13 and continue to go through, 00:08:58.17\00:09:02.20 it puts that experience as the canary in the mine. 00:09:02.24\00:09:06.54 So when we see people being beaten, 00:09:06.57\00:09:09.74 when we see a lack of police rights, 00:09:09.78\00:09:11.78 when we see that the police are stopping 00:09:11.81\00:09:13.88 and frisking and asking, 00:09:13.92\00:09:16.02 you know, just stopping because they want to, 00:09:16.05\00:09:18.89 and when we see people 00:09:18.92\00:09:20.92 being disproportionately confined in jail 00:09:20.96\00:09:24.39 and incarcerated and all that sort of thing, 00:09:24.43\00:09:26.93 we are seeing that continuum 00:09:26.96\00:09:30.57 of rights that we all hold dear, 00:09:30.60\00:09:32.53 especially church folks, where we believe 00:09:32.57\00:09:35.10 in our freedom of speech, in our freedom to worship, 00:09:35.14\00:09:38.41 but the freedoms have been burning on this end 00:09:38.44\00:09:42.01 for so long and which is... 00:09:42.04\00:09:43.38 I watched some footage of the Democratic Convention 00:09:43.41\00:09:46.21 the other day and Walter Cronkite 00:09:46.25\00:09:48.85 long dead now, but he was an icon, you know... 00:09:48.88\00:09:50.39 Yes, he was. 00:09:50.42\00:09:51.75 Walter Cronkite concept something it was true. 00:09:51.79\00:09:53.72 And here in the aftermath of it, 00:09:53.76\00:09:55.26 he was sitting at the convention 00:09:55.29\00:09:56.62 and he looked at the camera and he says, 00:09:56.66\00:09:59.49 "We are living in a police state." 00:09:59.53\00:10:01.76 He says, "There's no other way to describe it." 00:10:01.80\00:10:03.47 Right. 00:10:03.50\00:10:04.83 Now nowadays, if you say that, you get shot down 00:10:04.87\00:10:06.63 but we've already been there. 00:10:06.67\00:10:08.34 And this is not the worst country in the world 00:10:08.37\00:10:10.61 by any means but it has, periodically, 00:10:10.64\00:10:13.07 had aspects of police state. 00:10:13.11\00:10:14.64 Right. 00:10:14.68\00:10:16.01 And when you see... 00:10:16.04\00:10:17.38 And some people feel it more than others. 00:10:17.41\00:10:18.91 Right. 00:10:18.95\00:10:20.28 And I've dealt with, I've told you privately. 00:10:20.32\00:10:22.35 In one of my previous jobs, 00:10:22.38\00:10:24.02 I dealt a lot with the police force, 00:10:24.05\00:10:25.85 I did videos with them in many case. 00:10:25.89\00:10:27.22 Right, right. 00:10:27.26\00:10:28.59 They were kind to me, but I know that they treat 00:10:28.62\00:10:30.36 certain areas of certain cities sort of like a plantation. 00:10:30.39\00:10:35.40 It's open season for them. 00:10:35.43\00:10:38.03 For some people, yeah. 00:10:38.07\00:10:39.63 And in their defense, there's huge problems 00:10:39.67\00:10:43.14 that how would they deal with it, 00:10:43.17\00:10:44.77 but when you add to it this view 00:10:44.81\00:10:46.64 that sort of a class of people 00:10:46.68\00:10:48.14 that they don't have to worry about, it's very sad. 00:10:48.18\00:10:51.61 And I think we need to 00:10:51.65\00:10:54.98 have a public discussion about this 00:10:55.02\00:10:57.29 and make sure that it's addressed. 00:10:57.32\00:10:58.99 And in my closing and I want to have 00:10:59.02\00:11:01.02 a few comments from you. 00:11:01.06\00:11:02.72 But it's worth remembering, 00:11:02.76\00:11:04.43 since this is a religious liberty program at root, 00:11:04.46\00:11:07.20 that really, the basis of our religiously, 00:11:07.23\00:11:09.80 practical religious liberties day-to-day, 00:11:09.83\00:11:12.00 in the workplace particularly, 00:11:12.03\00:11:13.37 comes from the civil rights movement. 00:11:13.40\00:11:15.00 Oh, yes. 00:11:15.04\00:11:16.37 The constitution is a little vague, 00:11:16.40\00:11:18.14 but the civil rights legislation guarantees lack of, 00:11:18.17\00:11:22.18 you know, prejudice against you because of your religion, 00:11:22.21\00:11:24.58 your ethnicity, your gender, and so on. 00:11:24.61\00:11:26.55 Right, right. And you make such a good point. 00:11:26.58\00:11:29.18 What I would like to see us to continue to explore ways 00:11:29.22\00:11:33.66 that we can be very active 00:11:33.69\00:11:37.66 in the struggle, 00:11:37.69\00:11:40.33 ways in which we can educate our children, 00:11:40.36\00:11:42.93 educate our schools, the principals and the teachers 00:11:42.96\00:11:46.60 in our schools to discuss what we need to do 00:11:46.63\00:11:49.90 regarding preventing problems from happening 00:11:49.94\00:11:54.01 and protecting our children as they grow up. 00:11:54.04\00:11:55.38 And all of these rights 00:11:55.41\00:11:56.75 are interconnected, aren't they? 00:11:56.78\00:11:58.11 They are interconnected. 00:11:58.15\00:11:59.48 And so if we treat one group badly in one area, 00:11:59.51\00:12:01.12 likely, religious liberty will suffer. 00:12:01.15\00:12:02.98 Oh, yes. 00:12:03.02\00:12:04.35 I believe the freedom of speech is a major issue, 00:12:04.39\00:12:07.46 I believe your practice, 00:12:07.49\00:12:09.12 your ability to protest as you need to is an issue. 00:12:09.16\00:12:13.43 The ability to articulate these things, 00:12:13.46\00:12:16.67 this is where we are right now. 00:12:16.70\00:12:18.03 And I believe that what I'm trying to do is 00:12:18.07\00:12:21.10 make sure that my children know how to comport themselves, 00:12:21.14\00:12:25.31 but they also know what their rights are 00:12:25.34\00:12:26.91 and they also realize that you have to do 00:12:26.94\00:12:28.74 what you have to do to stand firm. 00:12:28.78\00:12:30.85 As editor of Liberty Magazine, it's very gratifying for me 00:12:34.88\00:12:38.05 to have as my guest on this program, 00:12:38.09\00:12:41.12 the editor of Message Magazine, 00:12:41.16\00:12:42.89 another Seventh-day Adventist magazine. 00:12:42.92\00:12:46.39 And it's worth remembering and me reminding you 00:12:46.43\00:12:49.80 that our movement, 00:12:49.83\00:12:51.67 a movement of expectation of the soon 00:12:51.70\00:12:54.14 and almost immediate return of Jesus Christ 00:12:54.17\00:12:57.51 was carried forward 00:12:57.54\00:12:58.91 on the efforts of publications 00:12:58.94\00:13:03.58 and the output of editors. 00:13:03.61\00:13:06.21 And today, editors are important. 00:13:06.25\00:13:10.42 Twitter and all the rest, yes, that's the social wave, 00:13:10.45\00:13:14.32 but it's the people that are generating 00:13:14.36\00:13:16.29 the thoughts and interpreting them 00:13:16.32\00:13:18.13 to the larger audience 00:13:18.16\00:13:19.49 that continue to make a difference. 00:13:19.53\00:13:21.26 Message? 00:13:21.30\00:13:22.63 Yes, there's a message to give. 00:13:22.66\00:13:24.00 Liberty? 00:13:24.03\00:13:25.37 There is still liberation call for, 00:13:25.40\00:13:27.10 as Jesus said in Nazareth, freedom for all. 00:13:27.14\00:13:32.44 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:13:32.47\00:13:36.38
