Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:05.13\00:00:07.07 Before the break, 00:00:07.10\00:00:08.60 we were really heavy into debating, 00:00:08.64\00:00:10.54 discussing this Christian nation concept 00:00:10.57\00:00:12.44 that really drives so much 00:00:12.47\00:00:14.38 of the religious liberty discussion in the US of late. 00:00:14.41\00:00:18.01 Well, I think of Sandra Day O'Connor, 00:00:18.05\00:00:20.12 a former Supreme Court Justice, she wrote, 00:00:20.15\00:00:22.28 "The religious zealot and the theocrat frighten us 00:00:22.32\00:00:24.85 in part because we understand 00:00:24.89\00:00:26.25 only too well their basic impulse. 00:00:26.29\00:00:28.92 No less frightening is the totalitarian atheist 00:00:28.96\00:00:31.33 who aspires to a society 00:00:31.36\00:00:32.99 in which the exercise of religion has no place." 00:00:33.03\00:00:35.70 So there are the Christian nationists 00:00:35.73\00:00:37.57 on one hand and yet there is the secular humanists 00:00:37.60\00:00:42.64 that really are at war against freedom of religion. 00:00:42.67\00:00:48.14 I think of Ronald Reagan Jr., 00:00:48.18\00:00:51.61 his commercial on TV that you see, 00:00:51.65\00:00:53.68 "The freedom from religion foundation." 00:00:53.72\00:00:55.28 Yes. 00:00:55.32\00:00:56.65 And a lot of people argue, 00:00:56.69\00:00:58.02 "Yeah, we must be free from religion." 00:00:58.05\00:00:59.39 But how far do you take that? 00:00:59.42\00:01:00.76 You know, you are not going to get very far. 00:01:00.79\00:01:03.06 I mean, you may get some followers to support that, 00:01:03.09\00:01:06.16 but to deny that we don't have Christian roots 00:01:06.19\00:01:09.40 and we don't have a Christian foundation 00:01:09.43\00:01:12.23 and a Christian society culturally 00:01:12.27\00:01:14.97 is really leading our nation down a bad road. 00:01:15.00\00:01:17.77 I used to listen a lot 00:01:17.81\00:01:19.14 to the late Christopher Hitchens debates 00:01:19.17\00:01:21.58 because he was a radical atheist, 00:01:21.61\00:01:24.28 and he had a lot of history on his side. 00:01:24.31\00:01:26.48 And of course, those that attacked him 00:01:26.51\00:01:28.72 would often bring up Stalin or, 00:01:28.75\00:01:30.49 you know, some other secular or Hitler even although. 00:01:30.52\00:01:33.42 I think what's wrong with Hitler is, 00:01:33.46\00:01:34.79 Hitler had allied himself very close to the state church 00:01:34.82\00:01:38.63 and even to Roman Catholicism. 00:01:38.66\00:01:41.16 But my take on history is that 00:01:41.20\00:01:43.67 atheism is a mortal enemy of faith. 00:01:43.70\00:01:47.24 But its weapons, mockery, ignoring, 00:01:47.27\00:01:52.07 and just marginalizing religion. 00:01:52.11\00:01:55.51 Right wing religionists, as Sandra Day O'Connor 00:01:55.54\00:01:58.25 was referring to, 00:01:58.28\00:01:59.88 they will cut off your head and string you up 00:01:59.91\00:02:02.62 and crucify you 00:02:02.65\00:02:04.59 in all in the name of justice and righteousness. 00:02:04.62\00:02:09.62 I think it's an easy point, especially in the US 00:02:09.66\00:02:13.33 where some of our worst excess is the Ku Klux Klan. 00:02:13.36\00:02:17.07 It was anti-Catholicism, what Christian America, 00:02:17.10\00:02:20.54 and we don't want to go back to those days. 00:02:20.57\00:02:22.84 Well, I had a professor of Portland State University 00:02:22.87\00:02:25.64 years ago in Oregon. 00:02:25.67\00:02:27.48 That was a former Mormon bishop who had turned atheist, okay, 00:02:27.51\00:02:31.88 and he was my philosophy professor. 00:02:31.91\00:02:33.78 I took three courses from him. 00:02:33.82\00:02:35.55 Brilliant guy, brilliant individual. 00:02:35.58\00:02:37.82 But he made an argument 00:02:37.85\00:02:39.82 that I fought against and I still don't believe 00:02:39.85\00:02:42.82 is accurate or true. 00:02:42.86\00:02:44.36 You see, they're motivated by something 00:02:44.39\00:02:46.16 that we don't realize. 00:02:46.19\00:02:47.83 They believe that a society free of religion 00:02:47.86\00:02:51.83 will be even moral, more moral than a society with religion. 00:02:51.87\00:02:56.77 So they believe in moralism, they believe in morality. 00:02:56.81\00:02:59.87 Of course. 00:02:59.91\00:03:01.24 They say they do, okay? 00:03:01.28\00:03:03.24 And that our society would be even more moral, 00:03:03.28\00:03:06.58 but you don't dare use the word righteous with them 00:03:06.61\00:03:08.48 because they don't like that. 00:03:08.52\00:03:09.85 Well, it's the morality of the preservation 00:03:09.88\00:03:12.19 of the species. 00:03:12.22\00:03:13.56 Yes, exactly. 00:03:13.59\00:03:15.32 So that's their argument, 00:03:15.36\00:03:16.69 and a lot of people don't understand 00:03:16.73\00:03:18.06 that side of the argument. 00:03:18.09\00:03:21.83 I went to the Elko Athletic Club 00:03:21.86\00:03:23.70 when I was a pastor in Elko, Nevada 00:03:23.73\00:03:25.67 way out in the middle of northeastern Nevada desert. 00:03:25.70\00:03:28.80 And there was a guy who was worth millions 00:03:28.84\00:03:32.24 and then he squandered it by gambling in United States. 00:03:32.27\00:03:34.68 He came from Ireland and ended up losing everything 00:03:34.71\00:03:39.28 and ended up being taken by this woman 00:03:39.31\00:03:40.92 who owned this business in Elko called the Elko Athletic Club. 00:03:40.95\00:03:44.69 And so you could order from the bar there 00:03:44.72\00:03:47.66 after working out. 00:03:47.69\00:03:49.49 You can order smoothies or whatever 00:03:49.52\00:03:52.36 and then some people, you know, got alcohol and everything. 00:03:52.39\00:03:54.43 I was going to have a smoothie. 00:03:54.46\00:03:55.80 But he and I used to have... 00:03:55.83\00:03:57.17 He was a big old tall guy 00:03:57.20\00:03:58.53 with handlebar mustache and everything, 00:03:58.57\00:04:00.57 bald and everything, and funny looking guy, 00:04:00.60\00:04:03.87 dark eyebrows, and a really funny smile. 00:04:03.91\00:04:07.41 Nicest guy though. 00:04:07.44\00:04:08.78 Anyway, we would argue... 00:04:08.81\00:04:10.21 Oh, I thought you were describing a... 00:04:10.25\00:04:11.65 For three and a half years, we would argue 00:04:11.68\00:04:13.98 almost daily at the gym about, you know, 00:04:14.02\00:04:17.82 what would a society look like free of religion, 00:04:17.85\00:04:20.16 absent of religion. 00:04:20.19\00:04:21.52 And I said, "You can't." I said, "It would die. 00:04:21.56\00:04:24.03 This would be the ugliest place on the earth." 00:04:24.06\00:04:26.70 I said, "Christianity is like the salt of the earth, 00:04:26.73\00:04:29.46 like the Bible says, like Christ said. 00:04:29.50\00:04:30.93 Without it, you would have no goodness in society." 00:04:30.97\00:04:33.74 And so see, the atheists argue 00:04:33.77\00:04:35.54 that you would have even more goodness 00:04:35.57\00:04:37.47 without religion. 00:04:37.51\00:04:39.07 That's their argument. 00:04:39.11\00:04:40.78 Well, I think... 00:04:40.81\00:04:42.14 I think the answer lies in the middle a bit. 00:04:42.18\00:04:43.85 There's a natural morality... 00:04:43.88\00:04:47.48 Naturally, those tribes and societies prohibit killing 00:04:47.52\00:04:52.09 and they regulate interactions on a certain level 00:04:52.12\00:04:56.32 that often are uncannily similar to Christianity, 00:04:56.36\00:04:59.19 or to Judaistic Christian 00:04:59.23\00:05:04.03 type religions or even Islam. 00:05:04.07\00:05:06.84 But that's not the real question. 00:05:06.87\00:05:08.60 We're talking about what dynamic is driving, 00:05:08.64\00:05:12.37 first, to be the Christian nation, 00:05:12.41\00:05:13.74 and what is the real threat? 00:05:13.78\00:05:15.11 And like I'll throw in a wildcard 00:05:15.14\00:05:16.54 that I've never heard anyone write about, 00:05:16.58\00:05:18.05 but I think it's true. 00:05:18.08\00:05:19.58 The most negative things 00:05:19.61\00:05:21.22 you can say about secularism, right? 00:05:21.25\00:05:23.18 You explained how they believe religion is their mortal enemy 00:05:23.22\00:05:28.66 because better off without it. 00:05:28.69\00:05:30.26 But we're faced with a hybrid now. 00:05:30.29\00:05:32.19 We have religious entities, like the Church of England 00:05:32.23\00:05:35.10 has said several Archbishops of Canterbury 00:05:35.13\00:05:38.10 that don't believe in the virgin birth, 00:05:38.13\00:05:39.67 don't believe in miracles, 00:05:39.70\00:05:41.04 don't believe in divine agencies. 00:05:41.07\00:05:42.40 Right. Right. 00:05:42.44\00:05:43.77 They are functioning as radical secularism 00:05:43.81\00:05:47.14 in their advancement of their religious organization. 00:05:47.18\00:05:50.55 So it isn't as simple 00:05:50.58\00:05:51.95 as radical secularists coming at you 00:05:51.98\00:05:54.25 or wild-eyed puritanical phonetics. 00:05:54.28\00:05:57.22 Well, and that's an interesting dynamic in Europe alone 00:05:57.25\00:05:59.75 because what you have is, 00:05:59.79\00:06:01.12 you have the Eastern European countries 00:06:01.16\00:06:02.92 that are pressing against the Western European countries. 00:06:02.96\00:06:05.33 Western European is pianism, 00:06:05.36\00:06:07.50 seems to be taking the increased secular road, 00:06:07.53\00:06:10.70 and Eastern European countries are more and more, 00:06:10.73\00:06:13.27 taking a more fundamentalist road including Poland 00:06:13.30\00:06:16.47 just passed recently in their parliament a, 00:06:16.50\00:06:20.28 you know, nationwide Sunday Law. 00:06:20.31\00:06:23.18 Family rest day. Yeah, family rest day. 00:06:23.21\00:06:25.08 And so I find that interesting 00:06:25.11\00:06:26.45 but it seems that they're converging. 00:06:26.48\00:06:29.12 Who wins? 00:06:29.15\00:06:30.49 I still think even in this country, 00:06:30.52\00:06:32.42 the United States of America, 00:06:32.45\00:06:34.22 that fundamentalism run amok wins. 00:06:34.26\00:06:36.26 Why? Yes. 00:06:36.29\00:06:37.63 Because I believe that secularism 00:06:37.66\00:06:40.40 is inherently apathetic. 00:06:40.43\00:06:42.60 Well, that's what I was saying earlier. 00:06:42.63\00:06:44.43 They're not likely to come at you 00:06:44.47\00:06:46.30 with all the fangs showing. 00:06:46.33\00:06:47.67 Right, right. 00:06:47.70\00:06:49.04 And so because of their apathy, 00:06:49.07\00:06:50.44 they just want peace, live and let live. 00:06:50.47\00:06:53.24 I mean, obviously, the counterexample to that, 00:06:53.27\00:06:56.38 the contradiction is the French Revolution 00:06:56.41\00:06:58.31 where you had secularists 00:06:58.35\00:06:59.78 that basically overthrew the religious and political... 00:06:59.81\00:07:02.78 Yeah, they had a particular reason for the hatred 00:07:02.82\00:07:04.65 of religion at that time. 00:07:04.69\00:07:06.02 But I think, the French Revolution 00:07:06.05\00:07:07.76 is an aberration. 00:07:07.79\00:07:09.36 I don't think it's a really... 00:07:09.39\00:07:11.39 Some people say, "Well, you know, 00:07:11.43\00:07:12.76 how do you defy what's said in The Great Controversy 00:07:12.79\00:07:14.63 by Ellen G. White?" 00:07:14.66\00:07:16.00 I don't think the French Revolution 00:07:16.03\00:07:17.63 is the model to look at 00:07:17.67\00:07:19.00 when we're looking to the future 00:07:19.03\00:07:20.84 because I really believe... 00:07:20.87\00:07:22.34 And who knows the future? I don't. 00:07:22.37\00:07:24.24 But what I am saying is, I think really, 00:07:24.27\00:07:26.94 I believe that we're looking at an increased move 00:07:26.98\00:07:30.18 towards fundamentalism. 00:07:30.21\00:07:31.55 And what I mean by that is simply this, 00:07:31.58\00:07:33.75 you see a president who basically garners, 00:07:33.78\00:07:38.95 basically 37% of the population's approval 00:07:38.99\00:07:42.76 and won the Electoral College vote but lost by, what, 00:07:42.79\00:07:46.26 nearly three million votes, okay? 00:07:46.29\00:07:48.63 Now you say, "Well, how could that be?" 00:07:48.66\00:07:50.97 But here, look at that dynamic. 00:07:51.00\00:07:52.50 It was all constitutional. It's all constitutional. 00:07:52.53\00:07:54.80 By the way we describe, 00:07:54.84\00:07:56.50 it's an aberrant sort of a situation. 00:07:56.54\00:07:57.87 But in the democratic system, you can have a vast majority 00:07:57.91\00:08:03.11 that's apathetic and allow 00:08:03.14\00:08:05.61 a very strong virulent aggressive minority to rule. 00:08:05.65\00:08:09.48 Absolutely. 00:08:09.52\00:08:10.85 That's always been a phenomenon. 00:08:10.89\00:08:12.25 And I think you're seeing that in Congress. 00:08:12.29\00:08:15.49 I think we're beginning to see 00:08:15.52\00:08:17.23 the effects of that in the Supreme Court. 00:08:17.26\00:08:20.60 Before long, we're going to have 00:08:20.63\00:08:24.00 right wing fundamentalists conservatives 00:08:24.03\00:08:26.00 in a religious bent that fill the seats in the court, 00:08:26.03\00:08:29.77 that take the place of far left wing secularist... 00:08:29.80\00:08:34.24 Which we have a problem within the judiciary right now. 00:08:34.28\00:08:36.18 ...liberal judges. 00:08:36.21\00:08:37.55 And so you have this ongoing fight 00:08:37.58\00:08:41.35 in our governmental system and it should be clear 00:08:41.38\00:08:44.69 to anybody watching it that that's what's happening. 00:08:44.72\00:08:47.26 Yeah. 00:08:47.29\00:08:48.62 No, there's a battle for the soul 00:08:48.66\00:08:49.99 of the United States. 00:08:50.03\00:08:51.36 Yes, yes. 00:08:51.39\00:08:52.73 I think, and you and I have agreed. 00:08:52.76\00:08:54.10 I think, in my lifetime, at least, 00:08:54.13\00:08:56.03 plus, what I've read in the US history, 00:08:56.06\00:08:57.73 I think this is one of the most troubling and dangerous 00:08:57.77\00:09:01.07 episodes in the story of the American republic. 00:09:01.10\00:09:06.07 And Ellen White that you referred to earlier, 00:09:06.11\00:09:08.41 her writing, I think prophetically 00:09:08.44\00:09:10.18 to Seventh-day Adventist 00:09:10.21\00:09:11.55 and to a larger audience, sometimes. 00:09:11.58\00:09:13.82 She said that the US one day will repudiate every principle 00:09:13.85\00:09:18.39 of the constitution. 00:09:18.42\00:09:19.75 Now she also said, leading to Revelation 13, 00:09:19.79\00:09:23.76 the two principles of Republicanism, 00:09:23.79\00:09:26.59 in other words, power of the people 00:09:26.63\00:09:28.33 and Protestantism, both and the threat. 00:09:28.36\00:09:32.00 I agree, and I think religious fundamentalism 00:09:32.03\00:09:34.90 will eventually take over this country 00:09:34.94\00:09:37.11 in very detrimental ways to our constitutional system 00:09:37.14\00:09:40.11 and specifically religious freedom. 00:09:40.14\00:09:42.38 And it's only a matter of time. 00:09:42.41\00:09:44.01 And again, I don't know the future and neither do you. 00:09:44.05\00:09:47.05 But we've been given some earmarks 00:09:47.08\00:09:49.42 both in Revelation and in the book, 00:09:49.45\00:09:51.15 "Great Controversy" and other sources 00:09:51.19\00:09:53.36 from current history and current events 00:09:53.39\00:09:56.19 to basically tell us that, 00:09:56.22\00:09:58.33 "Hey, we seem to be heading down this road." 00:09:58.36\00:10:00.73 Will it stay on that route? Who knows? 00:10:00.76\00:10:03.16 Some people have always thought that secularism and atheism 00:10:03.20\00:10:06.23 will take over this country to bring about last day events. 00:10:06.27\00:10:08.90 But I think it's the other way altogether. 00:10:08.94\00:10:10.94 It's one of the great mysteries of history, at least to me, 00:10:13.71\00:10:16.85 how in the establishing of the United States 00:10:16.88\00:10:19.88 in the adopting and development of a new constitution, 00:10:19.91\00:10:24.09 so many of the principles could be barely religious, 00:10:24.12\00:10:28.19 ideas is probably the best you can give to them. 00:10:28.22\00:10:31.66 How many irreligious or unreligious 00:10:31.69\00:10:34.73 or thoroughly secular people could come up 00:10:34.76\00:10:37.63 with a document that at its heart 00:10:37.67\00:10:40.40 defends freedom of religion, 00:10:40.44\00:10:42.70 not just as a line item but as a concept? 00:10:42.74\00:10:47.64 I think that's the divine element 00:10:47.68\00:10:49.54 in the history of the United States, 00:10:49.58\00:10:51.08 how God could guide people 00:10:51.11\00:10:53.28 hardly knowing what they were doing. 00:10:53.31\00:10:54.98 But out of it, came a protection 00:10:55.02\00:10:58.82 that exists to this day of the ultimate right 00:10:58.85\00:11:03.09 that we should all have to recognize God, 00:11:03.12\00:11:06.59 to worship Him, to follow Him, 00:11:06.63\00:11:08.96 to proclaim Him in the way that our conscience dictates. 00:11:09.00\00:11:13.10 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:11:13.13\00:11:16.67
