Welcome to the Liberty Insider again. 00:00:05.43\00:00:07.64 Thank you for coming back. 00:00:07.67\00:00:09.00 Before the break with guest Tina Ramirez, 00:00:09.04\00:00:12.27 we started off on talking about Nigeria, 00:00:12.31\00:00:14.68 Boko Haram, and of course religious intolerance, 00:00:14.71\00:00:19.51 and even religious terrorism, 00:00:19.55\00:00:21.58 but it's more than just religion, isn't it? 00:00:21.62\00:00:23.79 There are many cultural and economic reasons 00:00:23.82\00:00:27.46 for the instability that's developing there. 00:00:27.49\00:00:29.76 And you've been pointing out always, 00:00:29.79\00:00:31.49 I know your organization, education, education. 00:00:31.53\00:00:34.20 Yeah. 00:00:34.23\00:00:35.96 And at the root of what we see in Nigeria 00:00:36.00\00:00:37.60 is really these fears, these underlying fears 00:00:37.63\00:00:40.27 and misconceptions of the others 00:00:40.30\00:00:41.64 that are just fueled by religious, 00:00:41.67\00:00:46.07 by people that want to use religion 00:00:46.11\00:00:48.14 to their own ends but there are fears. 00:00:48.18\00:00:50.45 And so when they fall along religious lines 00:00:50.48\00:00:52.31 and then they are reinforced, 00:00:52.35\00:00:53.68 and then the people that make up the communities 00:00:53.72\00:00:57.45 that are of most affected, 00:00:57.49\00:00:58.85 it happens to happen along religious lines 00:00:58.89\00:01:01.02 so it is unfortunate. 00:01:01.06\00:01:02.62 But to stop that cycle of violence, 00:01:02.66\00:01:04.49 you have to educate the people 00:01:04.53\00:01:05.86 and so that's what Hardwired does. 00:01:05.89\00:01:07.36 So we, just a few months ago 00:01:07.40\00:01:09.56 I was in Iraq, in Nigeria, sorry, 00:01:09.60\00:01:12.13 and we were working with a group of 20 leaders. 00:01:12.17\00:01:15.04 We've chosen one leader 00:01:15.07\00:01:16.57 from each of the 20 northern states 00:01:16.60\00:01:18.21 to start training and our goal is to establish teams 00:01:18.24\00:01:22.04 in each of the northern states of leaders 00:01:22.08\00:01:24.55 that can defend religious freedom. 00:01:24.58\00:01:25.91 Basically little cell groups there. 00:01:25.95\00:01:27.28 Cells. Good. 00:01:27.32\00:01:28.65 But diverse groups so they would include Muslims, 00:01:28.68\00:01:30.02 and Christians, and indigenous leaders, 00:01:30.05\00:01:31.69 and so lawyers, as well as religious leaders 00:01:31.72\00:01:34.62 so a diverse group. 00:01:34.66\00:01:35.99 And our goal is that we would teach these teams, 00:01:36.02\00:01:39.09 why religious freedom is in their interest? 00:01:39.13\00:01:40.70 How to defend it? 00:01:40.73\00:01:42.06 And just in the last few months and in the last year 00:01:42.10\00:01:44.97 that we've been doing it, 00:01:45.00\00:01:46.33 it's been really interesting just to learn 00:01:46.37\00:01:47.84 the lack of awareness of their own laws. 00:01:47.87\00:01:50.97 Lack of awareness of how to navigate the laws, 00:01:51.01\00:01:55.01 how to access justice. 00:01:55.04\00:01:58.21 You would think people that are naturally interested 00:01:58.25\00:02:00.58 in this issues would know, 00:02:00.62\00:02:02.18 but there is simply no information about it. 00:02:02.22\00:02:04.15 And so these are the first trainings 00:02:04.19\00:02:05.55 that we've seen in Nigeria 00:02:05.59\00:02:07.09 to provide that kind of information 00:02:07.12\00:02:08.59 and resource so that the people don't have to just lay down 00:02:08.62\00:02:13.86 and take whatever persecution comes. 00:02:13.90\00:02:15.76 You know, when you told me something that I didn't even 00:02:15.80\00:02:18.07 get it out of reading the news stories 00:02:18.10\00:02:19.50 that the Sharia law that's applied in some areas 00:02:19.53\00:02:23.17 is not mandatory for non-Muslims. 00:02:23.20\00:02:25.47 Right. 00:02:25.51\00:02:26.84 And so we have one lawyer that's working 00:02:26.88\00:02:28.54 in one of the northern states who is great, 00:02:28.58\00:02:30.45 and he went through the training 00:02:30.48\00:02:32.45 and then we do cycles of trainings, 00:02:32.48\00:02:34.88 so they go through it a few times to really be able 00:02:34.92\00:02:37.29 to sustain their own ability 00:02:37.32\00:02:39.59 to train others in religious freedom. 00:02:39.62\00:02:41.82 So during the second training he came back 00:02:41.86\00:02:43.53 and he had gone and tested the curriculum 00:02:43.56\00:02:46.90 and applied it by training others. 00:02:46.93\00:02:48.86 So we go, we have them tested 00:02:48.90\00:02:50.23 in order to see how they can do, 00:02:50.27\00:02:51.60 and then they come back, we try it again. 00:02:51.63\00:02:53.03 And he had done the training 00:02:53.07\00:02:54.94 with several different groups of other lawyers, 00:02:54.97\00:02:56.91 one of which included a group of Muslim lawyers 00:02:56.94\00:02:59.14 in his government job. 00:02:59.17\00:03:00.88 And when he came back, 00:03:00.91\00:03:04.41 he shared how one of the Muslim lawyers 00:03:04.45\00:03:06.72 actually invited him to his village 00:03:06.75\00:03:08.78 to share with the imam, 00:03:08.82\00:03:10.92 the religious leader in his village. 00:03:10.95\00:03:13.76 And it was like the tribal leader 00:03:13.79\00:03:15.99 that was Muslim. 00:03:16.02\00:03:17.36 And the tribal leader was so amazed 00:03:17.39\00:03:19.53 as this lawyer was sharing about 00:03:19.56\00:03:21.46 what religious freedom means, 00:03:21.50\00:03:22.83 and the economic benefits of religious freedom 00:03:22.86\00:03:25.03 for their community, and sharing it in a way 00:03:25.07\00:03:27.24 that would really resonate with this leader. 00:03:27.27\00:03:29.57 And leader said, 00:03:29.60\00:03:30.94 "I've never heard this information, 00:03:30.97\00:03:32.64 where did you learn it? Where can I learn more?" 00:03:32.67\00:03:34.71 So he said, "I will come back and we can share more." 00:03:34.74\00:03:37.91 And then the leader said, 00:03:37.95\00:03:39.28 "Well, there is anything we can do to help you?" 00:03:39.31\00:03:40.98 And the lawyer said, "Well, there is this church 00:03:41.02\00:03:43.12 that has property in your village, 00:03:43.15\00:03:44.99 but the local police will not let us build on it, 00:03:45.02\00:03:47.19 and they've been harassing us not allowing us to build." 00:03:47.22\00:03:50.06 So he gave permission... 00:03:50.09\00:03:51.43 So he got on the phone. 00:03:51.46\00:03:52.83 He figured out who it was, got on the phone, and said, 00:03:52.86\00:03:56.50 "I want that to change right now." 00:03:56.53\00:03:57.87 And it did, they were able to build. 00:03:57.90\00:03:59.23 So instead of having to go through 00:03:59.27\00:04:00.60 this huge legal process with the courts, 00:04:00.64\00:04:02.50 it was one relationship that was made, 00:04:02.54\00:04:04.97 and it changed the situation in a village 00:04:05.01\00:04:08.41 from one of conflict and intolerance 00:04:08.44\00:04:11.35 that fuels violence and allows for Boko Haram 00:04:11.38\00:04:13.85 to feed off of it and to gain access 00:04:13.88\00:04:15.95 to the power there, to one of relationship 00:04:15.98\00:04:18.75 and breaking down barriers and trust and pluralism. 00:04:18.79\00:04:21.92 Now I can see that you have 00:04:21.96\00:04:23.59 the potential to just sort of positive leavening 00:04:23.63\00:04:28.20 if you like of the whole community 00:04:28.23\00:04:29.76 with these ideas. 00:04:29.80\00:04:31.13 And that's what we have seen across the board 00:04:31.17\00:04:32.50 so our goal is that heed to these northern states 00:04:32.53\00:04:34.74 we would begin to develop teams that can go 00:04:34.77\00:04:36.91 and disseminate training on religious freedom 00:04:36.94\00:04:39.84 and help their communities understand 00:04:39.87\00:04:41.21 how to interact with one another. 00:04:41.24\00:04:42.58 And you have big plans, but I am presuming 00:04:42.61\00:04:44.51 that there are other groups operating, 00:04:44.55\00:04:46.21 they're doing not quite the same but... 00:04:46.25\00:04:49.95 or what I'm getting it. 00:04:49.98\00:04:51.32 You're not just a line, 00:04:51.35\00:04:52.69 I'm hoping that many religious liberty 00:04:52.72\00:04:56.62 and civil rights groups 00:04:56.66\00:04:57.99 are counteracting what's happening 00:04:58.03\00:04:59.93 or is it just you? 00:04:59.96\00:05:01.30 No, there really isn't a lot happening 00:05:01.33\00:05:02.76 in Nigeria unfortunately. 00:05:02.80\00:05:04.13 I mean, and I've been following Nigeria for some time, 00:05:04.17\00:05:06.13 I mentioned we had hearings on it in Congress, 00:05:06.17\00:05:08.60 we followed it. 00:05:08.64\00:05:09.97 You know, when there is a big situation 00:05:10.01\00:05:11.34 like the Underwear Bomber 00:05:11.37\00:05:12.97 or the Chibok girls being attacked, 00:05:13.01\00:05:15.24 all the attention is on Nigeria but then within months 00:05:15.28\00:05:18.08 it dissipate since so, then people turn 00:05:18.11\00:05:20.32 to another crisis like Iraq, or North Korea, 00:05:20.35\00:05:22.78 or Iran, there is, you know, you take your pick, 00:05:22.82\00:05:24.69 there is plenty of crisis in the world. 00:05:24.72\00:05:26.05 And so, unfortunately, 00:05:26.09\00:05:27.42 Nigeria has been overlooked many times, 00:05:27.46\00:05:28.82 overshadowed by other global crisis. 00:05:28.86\00:05:32.03 The humanitarian crisis we've had in last few years 00:05:32.06\00:05:34.20 with the refugees. 00:05:34.23\00:05:36.03 And unfortunately, that means that by ignoring 00:05:36.06\00:05:39.70 the problem it's just that climate of impurity continues 00:05:39.73\00:05:41.90 to get worse, and so the situation 00:05:41.94\00:05:43.64 has escalated there. 00:05:43.67\00:05:45.64 But it is an extremely critical country 00:05:45.67\00:05:48.54 in the region and in the world to pay attention to. 00:05:48.58\00:05:52.65 It's going to have one of the largest populations 00:05:52.68\00:05:55.05 in the world in the next 10 to 20 years. 00:05:55.08\00:05:58.32 Most of that population growth is occurring in the north 00:05:58.35\00:06:00.42 in the predominantly Muslim areas. 00:06:00.46\00:06:02.12 Isn't the capital 00:06:02.16\00:06:03.49 one of the biggest cities in the world? 00:06:03.53\00:06:04.86 Yeah. 00:06:04.89\00:06:06.23 And so you can imagine the tensions that this is going 00:06:06.26\00:06:07.60 to create in the future if we don't address 00:06:07.63\00:06:08.96 these underlying conflicts right now. 00:06:09.00\00:06:11.07 It's only going to get worse. 00:06:11.10\00:06:12.43 And that could be the next global crisis 00:06:12.47\00:06:14.97 like what we have seen with ISIS 00:06:15.00\00:06:16.64 if we don't address it now. 00:06:16.67\00:06:18.01 So Hardwired recognizes these patterns 00:06:18.04\00:06:20.58 and these tensions and we want to work in countries 00:06:20.61\00:06:22.44 where we see that 00:06:22.48\00:06:23.81 they're at a critical turning point 00:06:23.85\00:06:25.18 that we can create change 00:06:25.21\00:06:27.12 that can be sustainable for the future 00:06:27.15\00:06:28.48 to a very larger crisis. 00:06:28.52\00:06:31.49 Well, of course, with Africa... 00:06:31.52\00:06:34.06 I don't know if you have the answer. 00:06:34.09\00:06:35.72 It seems to me the world ignores Africa 00:06:35.76\00:06:38.03 because it's not perceived 00:06:38.06\00:06:39.49 as central to its political stability, 00:06:39.53\00:06:42.56 but if you ignore it too long, 00:06:42.60\00:06:45.20 it will blow up in our face. 00:06:45.23\00:06:46.57 And where was that the embassy bombing 00:06:46.60\00:06:49.14 with the US? 00:06:49.17\00:06:50.51 In Lagos, I think. Yeah, Lagos. 00:06:50.54\00:06:52.21 I mean, that sort of got American attention 00:06:52.24\00:06:54.61 and I think other than that... 00:06:54.64\00:06:57.31 And you know, why... 00:06:57.35\00:06:59.28 I can answer the question myself, 00:06:59.31\00:07:00.68 but why is Nigeria not so important 00:07:00.72\00:07:03.89 to US interest say as Bahrain. 00:07:03.92\00:07:06.49 Well, it should be, I mean... 00:07:06.52\00:07:08.52 I think I know the answer but... 00:07:08.56\00:07:09.89 Yeah. These are... 00:07:09.92\00:07:11.69 You would think from a people point of view 00:07:11.73\00:07:13.90 and the influence on another countries, 00:07:13.93\00:07:15.26 Nigeria would be more worthy of a touch. 00:07:15.30\00:07:17.37 Well, in some ways Nigeria is a really interesting example 00:07:17.40\00:07:20.54 of pluralism in the world 00:07:20.57\00:07:21.90 because you've got such a diverse 00:07:21.94\00:07:24.71 and vibrant religious society with the Christians 00:07:24.74\00:07:27.84 and the Muslims there, 00:07:27.88\00:07:29.21 that could really be an example of pluralism 00:07:29.24\00:07:32.15 and freedom in the world 00:07:32.18\00:07:33.52 if it was really taking seriously, 00:07:33.55\00:07:37.25 and if it was attended the right way, 00:07:37.29\00:07:41.12 but right now we just don't see that happening, 00:07:41.16\00:07:42.92 and unfortunately it's ignored. 00:07:42.96\00:07:44.39 I'll run something valuable. 00:07:44.43\00:07:46.39 I have no idea how you learn so much. 00:07:46.43\00:07:48.06 I heard a scholar the other day, 00:07:48.10\00:07:51.83 at some length say that his theory 00:07:51.87\00:07:54.57 of why many of the world's problems 00:07:54.60\00:07:56.60 are getting worse and worse, 00:07:56.64\00:07:58.41 is that we don't let conflict work its way out. 00:07:58.44\00:08:01.94 That usually the combatants 00:08:01.98\00:08:03.71 whether they are religious or political, 00:08:03.75\00:08:05.48 they fight till someone's exhausted 00:08:05.51\00:08:08.15 and the whole point is won 00:08:08.18\00:08:09.62 and then they go on and rebuild. 00:08:09.65\00:08:11.72 When the issue blows up, things are full tilt 00:08:11.75\00:08:14.66 then the UN or some groups dips in 00:08:14.69\00:08:16.93 and we freeze it in place. 00:08:16.96\00:08:18.93 And the antagonisms and everything remain 00:08:18.96\00:08:21.76 or even get worse, 00:08:21.80\00:08:23.16 they're just now not allowed to work out. 00:08:23.20\00:08:25.67 I don't quite buy that view. 00:08:25.70\00:08:27.40 I mean, it might be experientially true 00:08:27.44\00:08:31.21 for the world as a whole, 00:08:31.24\00:08:32.64 but can the alternative of educations 00:08:32.67\00:08:36.81 bypass what he was arguing, 00:08:36.85\00:08:39.38 the need to just let the violence play out 00:08:39.41\00:08:41.62 until it's resolved by scorched earth policy if you like. 00:08:41.65\00:08:45.22 Right. 00:08:45.25\00:08:46.59 No, I don't think that works in the world 00:08:46.62\00:08:47.96 that we live in today with terrorism and... 00:08:47.99\00:08:49.82 And nuclear and all the rest of 00:08:49.86\00:08:51.19 'cause the stakes are too high. 00:08:51.23\00:08:52.56 People that are able to put extreme fear 00:08:52.59\00:08:53.96 in populous in order that, you know, 00:08:54.00\00:08:56.43 you are not duking it out on equal playing grounds, 00:08:56.46\00:08:59.27 that's not what's happening here. 00:08:59.30\00:09:00.84 So you have situations where communities 00:09:00.87\00:09:03.57 are terrified by violence and terror groups that are, 00:09:03.61\00:09:07.38 you know, just putting fear in the population 00:09:07.41\00:09:09.48 and then forcing them to submit to really dictatorial regimes 00:09:09.51\00:09:15.78 and ultimately lack of religious freedom. 00:09:15.82\00:09:18.25 But what we've seen in places like Iraq 00:09:18.29\00:09:20.56 is that when you ignore the religious root 00:09:20.59\00:09:22.92 causes of those conflicts, 00:09:22.96\00:09:24.66 you end up with situations that only recur, 00:09:24.69\00:09:27.40 they just recycle through every, you know, decade. 00:09:27.43\00:09:30.20 And in Nigeria we've seen that as well. 00:09:30.23\00:09:32.07 And so, in order to really get to those root causes, 00:09:32.10\00:09:34.70 you've got to begin to educate the populous in a way 00:09:34.74\00:09:37.87 that changes the mindset of the culture, 00:09:37.91\00:09:39.47 that changes the culture itself. 00:09:39.51\00:09:41.31 And to shift that, 00:09:41.34\00:09:42.84 to shift the culture of a population, 00:09:42.88\00:09:45.28 you really have to work through education in a way 00:09:45.31\00:09:49.48 that will teach them to value the rights 00:09:49.52\00:09:52.02 and fears of one and another, overcome their fears 00:09:52.05\00:09:54.29 and be willing to live side by side 00:09:54.32\00:09:58.96 where they actively engage with one another. 00:09:58.99\00:10:00.93 And if they're separate 00:10:00.96\00:10:03.43 and they are forced to be separate, 00:10:03.47\00:10:05.83 you know, as you said, that doesn't workout either, 00:10:05.87\00:10:08.14 you really have to... 00:10:08.17\00:10:10.11 It's not allowing them to fight it out together, 00:10:10.14\00:10:12.17 but it's enabling them to almost duke it out 00:10:12.21\00:10:16.71 in dialog together or in active engagement 00:10:16.75\00:10:20.05 where they are forced to work through their fears 00:10:20.08\00:10:21.52 and misconceptions of one another 00:10:21.55\00:10:23.69 or the intolerance and the things 00:10:23.72\00:10:26.02 that are fuelling the ideologies 00:10:26.05\00:10:28.52 that are allowing for the violence 00:10:28.56\00:10:30.26 to occur in the first place. 00:10:30.29\00:10:34.46 There is no question that Boko Haram out of Nigeria 00:10:34.50\00:10:38.37 has been one of the most fearsome forms 00:10:38.40\00:10:40.40 of religious terrorism. 00:10:40.44\00:10:43.10 Ironically, it profits from a sense of anti-education. 00:10:43.14\00:10:49.41 Literally, it means educational knowledge forbidden, 00:10:49.44\00:10:53.58 westernization forbidden, 00:10:53.62\00:10:55.52 but yet when we are dealing about 00:10:55.55\00:10:57.22 religious liberty knowledge is vital, 00:10:57.25\00:11:00.49 an understanding of how God works, 00:11:00.52\00:11:03.06 what He wants for men, the rights of other people. 00:11:03.09\00:11:06.36 This we have to learn even though 00:11:06.39\00:11:08.40 there is a certain innate yearning toward it. 00:11:08.43\00:11:11.47 Religious freedom is not forbidden 00:11:11.50\00:11:14.94 and it should never be forbidden. 00:11:14.97\00:11:17.17 And Boko Haram, ISIS, whatever it might be 00:11:17.21\00:11:20.11 that fights against this, it's putting itself against 00:11:20.14\00:11:23.08 an elemental principle of the universe. 00:11:23.11\00:11:28.18 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:11:28.22\00:11:31.02
