Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:05.03\00:00:06.74 Before the break with guest, Ed Cook, Dr. Ed Cook, 00:00:06.77\00:00:09.87 whose specialty is church-state studies. 00:00:10.37\00:00:12.57 And I know a lot of the articles you have written for Liberty 00:00:12.61\00:00:15.38 have been on some of the edicts or documents that have 00:00:15.41\00:00:20.42 come out of Rome recently. 00:00:20.45\00:00:21.92 So we're talking about the Jesuit Order, its history, 00:00:22.02\00:00:25.92 and its role, and perhaps its aims, its methods, and so on. 00:00:25.95\00:00:29.42 It's a very interesting history, isn't it? 00:00:31.03\00:00:33.83 ~ Oh yes. - It's not ancient. 00:00:33.86\00:00:36.13 Even though it began a long time ago. 00:00:36.16\00:00:37.97 Almost 500 years ago in the aftermath of the Reformation. 00:00:38.40\00:00:44.44 But as I was saying, I listen to TV and I'm struck by 00:00:44.84\00:00:48.88 how often appointees are Jesuit educated 00:00:48.91\00:00:52.28 or sometimes even Jesuits themselves. 00:00:52.31\00:00:55.05 ~ Now I'm going to comment on that. 00:00:56.28\00:00:57.62 You know from their very beginning, the Society of Jesus, 00:00:57.65\00:01:02.42 they recognize the need for educating Catholics 00:01:02.79\00:01:06.06 to help them know their faith and stay within the church, 00:01:06.43\00:01:09.56 as well as trying to reach the Protestants and former Catholics 00:01:09.66\00:01:13.60 to come back to the faith. 00:01:13.80\00:01:15.17 So one of the things that they focused on was 00:01:15.20\00:01:17.31 their educational mission. 00:01:17.34\00:01:18.67 And it's very interesting learning how they, 00:01:18.71\00:01:21.71 some of their methodology is that they would go and 00:01:21.74\00:01:23.98 send out Jesuit trained priests into areas 00:01:24.01\00:01:26.75 where there were no schools. 00:01:26.78\00:01:28.25 And they would go out and mingle with the children 00:01:28.28\00:01:30.49 and start teaching them very basic doctrinal, catechismal 00:01:30.52\00:01:34.19 truths, but they would put it to song. 00:01:34.22\00:01:36.52 And so as the children would learn songs 00:01:36.73\00:01:38.46 they were learning their catechism. 00:01:38.49\00:01:40.66 And then what they would do is they would ask those children 00:01:40.70\00:01:43.00 to go and find their friends and teach them the same. 00:01:43.03\00:01:46.20 And so that's how they grew their numbers for pupils. 00:01:46.23\00:01:49.04 - Then they started the schools. ~ That's a very good technique. 00:01:49.07\00:01:50.41 - Yes. ~ There's nothing wrong. 00:01:50.44\00:01:51.77 And maybe other organizations, church or otherwise, 00:01:51.81\00:01:55.88 could learn from some of the methodologies. 00:01:55.91\00:01:59.08 They're hardly wrong. 00:01:59.11\00:02:00.85 And of course, I have to keep saying it, 00:02:00.95\00:02:03.49 on the principles of religious liberty, 00:02:03.52\00:02:06.49 even if you and I disagree strongly with the doctrines 00:02:06.79\00:02:10.63 and the spiritual position of any church, 00:02:10.66\00:02:13.46 in the case the Roman Catholic, on a religious liberty level 00:02:13.50\00:02:16.70 we can't deny their right to believe it 00:02:16.73\00:02:19.13 and full freedom to practice it. 00:02:19.17\00:02:21.14 So that's not what we're talking about here, but 00:02:21.97\00:02:24.01 we're into church history and the role of a group 00:02:24.04\00:02:28.68 that at different times have played a rather even bloody 00:02:28.71\00:02:33.35 role, I think, in religious rivalries and advancing the 00:02:33.65\00:02:38.95 cause of Rome against Protestantism. 00:02:38.99\00:02:40.66 Because that's more of how they saw themselves 00:02:40.69\00:02:43.32 after they were founded. 00:02:43.36\00:02:44.69 It was not just a military Order. 00:02:44.73\00:02:46.06 They were the foot soldiers and in some ways the special forces 00:02:46.09\00:02:52.73 of the papacy, right? 00:02:52.90\00:02:54.34 Yeah, what I would add to that, just kind of a clarification 00:02:54.50\00:02:57.14 or just a broadening, I should say, is that their original 00:02:57.17\00:03:01.01 beginning in 1534 focused on the aspect of ministry 00:03:01.04\00:03:04.15 of different types, meeting the needs of the poor, and so forth. 00:03:04.18\00:03:06.82 It's very similar to some of the other Orders that existed. 00:03:06.85\00:03:09.62 What distinguished them, though, is that they did take, just like 00:03:10.19\00:03:13.22 the Mendicant Order, vows of chastity, 00:03:13.25\00:03:16.12 and poverty, and obedience, but the one thing that 00:03:16.16\00:03:18.53 distinguished the Society of Jesus from all other Orders 00:03:18.56\00:03:21.30 was their ultimate allegiance to the pope regarding missions. 00:03:21.40\00:03:24.83 Well, they were seen to be his personal, 00:03:24.87\00:03:27.04 spiritual bodyguard, if you like. 00:03:27.07\00:03:28.90 That was stated from the very beginning. 00:03:29.54\00:03:32.37 The other thing, though, that was in 1534, 00:03:32.57\00:03:35.24 they were officially recognized in 1540. 00:03:35.41\00:03:36.75 And of course, Luther was in 1517. 00:03:36.78\00:03:41.25 ~ 1517, yeah. - 1517. Of course, 500 years. 00:03:41.28\00:03:43.79 So you can tell by the timing it followed very quickly 00:03:44.15\00:03:46.55 after the Reformation. 00:03:47.19\00:03:48.52 Not that Luther was the only Reformation figure, 00:03:48.56\00:03:51.39 but it had reached critical mass by his appearance. 00:03:51.43\00:03:55.33 By 1550 the Jesuit Order had basically been recognized 00:03:55.36\00:04:00.07 not only for a period of little over a decade by the pope, 00:04:00.10\00:04:03.20 but in addition to that, they recognized the advances 00:04:03.41\00:04:06.01 that Protestantism was making. 00:04:06.04\00:04:07.71 So in 1550 is when they actually added to their 00:04:07.74\00:04:11.05 spiritual formation order the statement 00:04:11.08\00:04:14.12 in defense of the faith. 00:04:14.15\00:04:15.55 That's what from that point onward they made it a particular 00:04:15.82\00:04:20.12 part of their mission to counter Protestantism. 00:04:20.16\00:04:24.33 Your mind is humming on the dates. 00:04:24.36\00:04:27.50 So what was the date of the Council of Trent? 00:04:27.53\00:04:29.80 It actually took place between 1542 to 1556, 00:04:30.00\00:04:34.60 roughly in that period, a little over 15 years. 00:04:34.64\00:04:36.54 That's when it really, I know that's when the die was cast 00:04:36.57\00:04:40.14 on the Jesuit Order, at the Council of Trent. 00:04:40.18\00:04:42.18 And very tellingly, even though we've seen wonderful 00:04:42.38\00:04:46.48 accommodations of late from Rome toward other Christians 00:04:47.62\00:04:50.99 and other religions, and there's an openness that 00:04:51.02\00:04:53.96 I find refreshing when I meet with some of the Catholic 00:04:54.19\00:04:56.69 audiences, things at Catholic universities, and so on, 00:04:57.59\00:05:00.90 but the Council of Trent has never been repudiated. 00:05:01.83\00:05:04.23 And there are some very heavy stuff there 00:05:04.27\00:05:07.77 that explain some of the actions of the Jesuits through the ages. 00:05:08.94\00:05:13.54 You know, the Inquisition was not a pleasant process, 00:05:15.01\00:05:18.18 and the Jesuits were front and center on that, weren't that? 00:05:18.21\00:05:20.45 The Franciscans were the actual inquisitors. 00:05:20.68\00:05:22.85 Now Jesuits were there present whenever the 00:05:22.88\00:05:25.72 preceding's were taking place, yes. 00:05:25.75\00:05:27.46 They were involved in it. 00:05:27.49\00:05:28.82 As some of their own documents kind of state, 00:05:29.42\00:05:32.29 their preference would be to address issues of 00:05:32.33\00:05:35.30 unfaithfulness, Catholic unfaithfulness, 00:05:36.13\00:05:38.10 through a pastoral role, but ultimately if the individual 00:05:38.20\00:05:41.17 was not willing to recant their false teachings, 00:05:41.20\00:05:44.21 yes, the Jesuits were involved in that 00:05:44.31\00:05:46.27 process of the Inquisition. 00:05:46.31\00:05:47.71 ~ And it's worth... 00:05:47.74\00:05:49.08 You know, to me this is more a historic thing 00:05:49.11\00:05:52.55 than an indictment of anyone. 00:05:52.58\00:05:54.58 But you know, right now the western world 00:05:54.62\00:05:56.62 is dealing with Islam in its radicalized form. 00:05:56.65\00:06:00.56 And some of its worst excesses are derived from the Koran 00:06:01.26\00:06:06.26 in statements about how you treat the apostate, and so on. 00:06:06.29\00:06:11.07 And I find these, of course, blood chilling. 00:06:11.70\00:06:14.84 But they're not that different from the attitudes 00:06:14.94\00:06:18.51 in the Christian world in the Middle Ages. 00:06:18.54\00:06:21.24 I don't think it's clearly derived from the Bible, 00:06:22.04\00:06:24.51 but they were held by the major church body 00:06:24.55\00:06:29.48 and put into practice in the Counter-Reformation 00:06:29.52\00:06:33.25 against religious dissidence. 00:06:33.29\00:06:35.19 And you're saying here that if you repented or recanted... 00:06:35.39\00:06:40.00 But it wasn't always that easy. 00:06:40.03\00:06:41.73 Sometimes they were happy to have the recanting 00:06:44.90\00:06:47.97 and the repenting as the last process as you expired. 00:06:48.00\00:06:50.97 ~Yes, that is true. 00:06:51.51\00:06:52.94 You know, when individuals... 00:06:53.41\00:06:54.84 I guess the central issue in cases like that 00:06:55.04\00:06:58.78 deals with a matter of conscience. 00:06:58.81\00:07:00.48 You know, if an individual had urged from the faith, 00:07:00.58\00:07:02.82 from the Catholic faith, just through ignorance, 00:07:02.85\00:07:05.59 because they were influenced by Protestant missionaries 00:07:06.05\00:07:08.22 that came into the town, then the Jesuits would have the 00:07:08.26\00:07:11.79 goal of establishing a school and trying to educate 00:07:11.83\00:07:14.33 the individuals and get them back into the faith. 00:07:14.36\00:07:16.13 In those cases, it was through a matter of ignorance and 00:07:16.16\00:07:18.50 they weren't really convicted of the Protestant teachings, 00:07:18.53\00:07:20.87 yes they would easily come back into the fold of Catholicism. 00:07:20.90\00:07:24.07 But in those cases where it was a matter of conscience, 00:07:24.17\00:07:26.71 they were convicted they should be Protestant, then that 00:07:26.74\00:07:29.54 is when it entered into a more prolonged process of any 00:07:29.58\00:07:32.25 inquisition that took place, and often times involved torture. 00:07:32.28\00:07:35.98 And ultimately, as you pointed out, the individual 00:07:36.08\00:07:38.79 was given the opportunity to recant their heresy 00:07:38.82\00:07:42.19 as they were burning at the stake. 00:07:42.22\00:07:43.59 And I've got an idea, I've never read it anywhere, 00:07:43.63\00:07:45.76 but I get it from reading, but I think... 00:07:45.79\00:07:49.83 You could study the medieval church and... 00:07:51.10\00:07:55.17 Well you mentioned syncretism. 00:07:55.27\00:07:56.60 Many of the attitudes of the medieval church 00:07:57.04\00:08:00.18 were somewhat indistinguishable from the superstitions and the 00:08:00.91\00:08:05.41 brutalities of life at the time. 00:08:05.61\00:08:08.72 And remember, it was common, I don't think it came from the 00:08:09.12\00:08:12.15 church, when like you were accused of being 00:08:12.19\00:08:15.19 a thief or something, they would throw you in the water 00:08:16.22\00:08:19.39 and if you floated, you were guilty. 00:08:19.86\00:08:21.76 And if you sank, you were innocent, right? 00:08:22.43\00:08:24.27 ~ Yes. 00:08:24.30\00:08:25.63 But if you sank, you drowned. 00:08:25.77\00:08:27.37 And I really believe that in the Inquisition there was 00:08:27.40\00:08:30.37 some of the same thinking. 00:08:30.41\00:08:31.94 They put you through the trial by torturers 00:08:31.97\00:08:34.58 to recant or to be innocent, but you die, 00:08:34.61\00:08:37.41 and you sort of die shriven and okay. 00:08:37.45\00:08:41.35 But you're not going to get out of it with your life. 00:08:41.38\00:08:43.35 And I don't even know how that came, but this was a curious 00:08:43.92\00:08:47.22 thing in the rough justice of villagers. 00:08:47.26\00:08:49.62 There was no way that a human being could come out 00:08:50.06\00:08:54.33 innocent and alive, but the trials by water and fire 00:08:54.36\00:08:57.77 and all the rest were applied. 00:08:57.80\00:08:59.23 And there was a funny parallel between those 00:08:59.93\00:09:02.44 and the methods of the Inquisition. 00:09:02.47\00:09:04.11 ~ Yes, that it true. 00:09:04.31\00:09:05.64 You know, one of the factors that's kind of historical 00:09:05.67\00:09:09.18 as well as a cultural aspect of Europe during the time 00:09:09.21\00:09:12.48 of the medieval period is that there was quite a bit rampant 00:09:12.51\00:09:16.22 superstition and ideas of, you know, myths of nymphs, 00:09:16.25\00:09:21.16 dwarfs, all of those things that are typically tied in with 00:09:21.19\00:09:24.56 more of the mystical aspect. 00:09:24.59\00:09:26.13 Well, and you're mentioning that, let's tell the listeners. 00:09:26.39\00:09:30.27 Think for a minute, what do the medieval churches 00:09:30.30\00:09:32.50 and cathedrals in Europe look like? 00:09:32.53\00:09:34.24 The gargoyles and all the rest. 00:09:34.27\00:09:35.90 That's where all that comes from. 00:09:36.10\00:09:37.57 The idea that these satanic or even ancestral sort of spirits 00:09:37.61\00:09:42.84 are all hovering around ready to devour you. 00:09:42.88\00:09:45.01 They make the steeples pointy so they can't sit on them, 00:09:45.05\00:09:47.88 and exercise them and chase them all away. 00:09:48.25\00:09:50.49 Very close to sort of a pre-Christian 00:09:50.52\00:09:55.42 sort of superstition, in my view. 00:09:55.46\00:09:57.83 Yes, and that's also why, you know, the work that Luther did 00:09:57.86\00:10:02.16 in going back and studying the Scriptures and bringing that 00:10:02.53\00:10:05.20 not only illuminated his own mind, but to the world. 00:10:05.23\00:10:07.30 It brought fresh air into the whole religious discussion, 00:10:07.34\00:10:09.94 there's no question. 00:10:09.97\00:10:11.31 And today it's been very trendy by the Roman Catholic Church 00:10:11.34\00:10:14.84 to sort of take ownership of Luther and these fellows. 00:10:14.88\00:10:17.35 I think that's a little disingenuous, 00:10:17.55\00:10:19.15 but there's no question that in the blow back 00:10:19.18\00:10:22.25 from the Reformation even the Roman Catholic Church 00:10:22.28\00:10:24.52 has been forced, well not forced perhaps, but I mean 00:10:24.55\00:10:28.09 it's almost inevitably opened up 00:10:28.12\00:10:32.03 and a little bit of light has shone... 00:10:32.33\00:10:34.06 ~ To re-evaluate, yes, something. 00:10:34.10\00:10:35.80 They've re-evaluated their views. 00:10:35.83\00:10:37.43 Yep, that certainly it true. 00:10:37.47\00:10:39.17 And you know dealing with, and kind of coming back 00:10:39.20\00:10:41.10 on point with that aspect of the Jesuits, 00:10:41.14\00:10:43.71 just a few little notable things in their history. 00:10:44.11\00:10:46.47 Within one decade they had actually grown to 1000 members. 00:10:46.91\00:10:50.38 And then by 1615 they had actually grown to 13,000. 00:10:50.75\00:10:54.78 ~ How many are there today? I haven't seen it recently. 00:10:54.82\00:10:56.65 Somewhere around 19,000 worldwide 00:10:56.69\00:10:59.85 serving in different countries. 00:11:00.16\00:11:01.49 Yeah, so it's an influential Order. 00:11:01.66\00:11:03.99 And you know, we have to respect, and not admire, 00:11:04.09\00:11:08.83 but recognize the great value they're playing 00:11:08.86\00:11:11.93 in their church even today. 00:11:11.97\00:11:13.37 Of course, the pope is a Jesuit, 00:11:13.40\00:11:14.74 which is items for a whole discussion. 00:11:14.77\00:11:18.24 ~ Yes, for sure. He's the first... 00:11:18.27\00:11:20.74 How should Protestants look at the Jesuit Order today, 00:11:20.78\00:11:23.58 as sort of a take away? 00:11:23.61\00:11:24.95 What would you say to that? 00:11:24.98\00:11:26.31 I would say, there are... 00:11:26.35\00:11:27.68 You know, we have to look at, and the Bible tells us to 00:11:27.72\00:11:30.42 take time to recognize, give honor where honor is due. 00:11:30.45\00:11:33.56 There are some good things that Jesuits have done 00:11:33.82\00:11:36.36 in some countries in the world today 00:11:36.39\00:11:38.89 regarding the rights of indigenous peoples. 00:11:38.93\00:11:42.03 So that's on the positive side. 00:11:42.23\00:11:43.57 On the flip side, they are still heavily involved 00:11:43.60\00:11:45.97 in a lot of political issues, which is something 00:11:46.00\00:11:48.67 that ties back to kind of throughout their history. 00:11:48.70\00:11:50.97 So that's a balanced perspective on the Society of Jesus. 00:11:51.47\00:11:54.51 Curiously, given the depredations of war, 00:11:58.05\00:12:00.65 Christians have shown themselves in the modern era 00:12:00.68\00:12:04.32 to be quite enamored with the warfare imagery. 00:12:04.35\00:12:08.82 Take General Booth and the Salvation Army, 00:12:09.39\00:12:12.16 seemingly harmless. 00:12:12.19\00:12:13.66 Take, Onward Christian Soldiers, 00:12:13.70\00:12:16.10 and even, The Battle Hymn of the Republic, 00:12:16.43\00:12:18.23 where real civil war and religious sentiment combined. 00:12:18.27\00:12:22.57 But when we look back at the Reformation 00:12:23.24\00:12:24.97 and the very real religious struggle that ensued, 00:12:25.01\00:12:28.01 to hear of the founding of the Jesuits is to know 00:12:28.88\00:12:32.41 that it was not just founded by a soldier. 00:12:32.45\00:12:35.32 They took this as their battle orders 00:12:35.35\00:12:38.45 to, by hook or by crook, by violent or fair or foul means, 00:12:38.72\00:12:42.92 to roll back the disgrace of the Church 00:12:43.12\00:12:46.43 and to bring back the heretics. 00:12:46.46\00:12:48.56 Not by swords loud clashing, but by deeds of love and mercy 00:12:49.93\00:12:54.84 is really the way we should see the need to carry on 00:12:55.14\00:12:58.57 the spiritual battle. 00:12:58.61\00:12:59.97 For Liberty Inside, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:13:00.91\00:13:04.38
