Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:05.00\00:00:06.63 Before the break with Christopher Steed 00:00:06.67\00:00:08.70 we were talking, starting with the reformation. 00:00:09.37\00:00:11.44 We were talking then about religion and spirituality. 00:00:12.11\00:00:15.08 And of course, that's very important. 00:00:15.11\00:00:17.05 There was a great awakening in America in the 1750's. 00:00:17.45\00:00:21.85 And one of the preacher's sermons was entitled this, 00:00:23.08\00:00:26.65 you think of it, The Expulsive Power of a New Affection. 00:00:26.69\00:00:32.76 You're a guy that has a few new affections now and then. 00:00:33.93\00:00:36.90 Like all young man. 00:00:37.50\00:00:38.83 When you meet the latest girl, you don't hardly 00:00:39.23\00:00:45.04 remember the other girls, do you? 00:00:45.07\00:00:46.68 Well, I mean, you do remember them, but 00:00:47.18\00:00:49.51 you try to forget about them and create new memories. 00:00:49.54\00:00:53.05 Right, it fades away and you're into this one. 00:00:53.08\00:00:55.22 And that's what true religion is. 00:00:55.55\00:00:57.85 It should fill you like a romantic... 00:00:57.89\00:01:00.36 ~ Fever. - Yeah, fever. Good word. 00:01:03.09\00:01:05.29 A romantic fever. 00:01:06.16\00:01:07.50 And if religion is dynamized that way, 00:01:07.53\00:01:10.57 it's less likely to be in a persecuting direction. 00:01:10.60\00:01:14.40 Let's get back to the reformation. 00:01:17.47\00:01:18.97 The reformation was, give or take, because it started 00:01:19.27\00:01:22.68 a littler earlier than Martin Luther, like John Wycliffe 00:01:22.71\00:01:25.21 nearly 100 years earlier in England, 00:01:25.25\00:01:27.22 and it continued after Luther. 00:01:27.25\00:01:29.05 But let's think about the reformation. 00:01:29.08\00:01:30.99 They fought for personal expression. 00:01:32.85\00:01:36.83 Do you feel as a Christian, a Seventh-day Adventist Christian, 00:01:36.86\00:01:40.03 that you are expected even to find your own way spiritually, 00:01:40.06\00:01:44.90 or do you think the pastor is the one that hands it down, 00:01:44.93\00:01:48.20 and as long as you do what the pastor says then you're fine? 00:01:48.24\00:01:50.61 In my opinion, I believe that you're supposed to find your 00:01:51.51\00:01:55.14 own way, yes, but you're suppose to reach out to people 00:01:55.18\00:01:58.15 and say, "Look, hey pastor, I was reading the other day. 00:01:58.18\00:02:01.72 I was reading through, let's say, Daniel. 00:02:01.75\00:02:03.79 I was reading through Daniel and I'm stuck on Daniel 4. 00:02:04.09\00:02:07.06 You know, I don't understand it. 00:02:07.09\00:02:08.42 You know, help me. Help me understand. 00:02:08.46\00:02:10.53 Give me your opinions." 00:02:11.09\00:02:12.43 And then after you've listened to him explain these to you, 00:02:12.59\00:02:15.36 and then give him your opinion... 00:02:15.40\00:02:16.73 Or even, like, me and you. 00:02:16.77\00:02:18.20 Or go to a Bible teacher or something. 00:02:19.27\00:02:21.20 Ask them their opinions, ask them what they feel, 00:02:21.24\00:02:24.64 and then you form your own opinion from that. 00:02:24.84\00:02:27.38 Well that's part of the Bible study, isn't it? 00:02:27.84\00:02:29.88 ~ Yeah. 00:02:29.98\00:02:31.31 Doing it, not in a closed room. 00:02:31.35\00:02:33.45 And this is... 00:02:33.55\00:02:34.88 There's a movement even within our church 00:02:34.92\00:02:38.29 that I think is a little bit troubling. 00:02:38.32\00:02:39.85 That people, basically without any reference to other people, 00:02:40.29\00:02:43.32 and sometimes without reference to the Bible, 00:02:43.36\00:02:45.49 think and pray and wait for sort of an illumination 00:02:45.69\00:02:49.76 that comes from, goodness knows where. 00:02:50.30\00:02:52.80 It's called, spiritual formation. 00:02:53.07\00:02:54.60 And if nothing else, it lays yourself, your mind, open 00:02:54.64\00:02:58.84 to delusions, and in the worst case perhaps 00:02:58.87\00:03:01.38 to the wrong spirit. 00:03:01.41\00:03:02.84 No, we're to test the Bible. 00:03:04.01\00:03:06.08 And part of testing that, ask your pastor a question. 00:03:06.11\00:03:09.52 You know, there's many Adventists who became 00:03:09.72\00:03:11.82 an Adventist, they asked priests or the pastor of their church, 00:03:11.85\00:03:15.56 say, about the Sabbath, and they got a reply 00:03:16.02\00:03:18.89 that raised more questions. 00:03:18.93\00:03:20.26 So they went to the Bible and checked it out for themselves. 00:03:20.30\00:03:22.40 That's part of the testing process of knowledge 00:03:22.70\00:03:26.03 that all of us should be part of. 00:03:26.07\00:03:27.60 You don't just take it... 00:03:27.64\00:03:28.97 As the president of the U.S. says, 00:03:29.20\00:03:30.94 there's fake news around. 00:03:30.97\00:03:32.31 Maybe not as much as he makes out. 00:03:32.34\00:03:33.88 But you know, different people for different reasons 00:03:34.74\00:03:37.41 will give you, quote, "facts." 00:03:37.45\00:03:39.11 Test them. 00:03:39.15\00:03:40.48 We're entering an age, I think, where there's so much knowledge. 00:03:41.65\00:03:45.02 Daniel said that knowledge shall be increased. 00:03:45.62\00:03:47.76 And what else did he say? 00:03:48.29\00:03:49.62 You remember the text? That men shall run to and fro. 00:03:50.23\00:03:52.59 And a lot of travel. 00:03:53.03\00:03:54.76 Even, like, going to work every day it's 70 miles each way. 00:03:54.96\00:03:57.83 I'm bouncing around. 00:03:57.87\00:03:59.37 A lot of knowledge, but also the Bible says, 00:04:00.37\00:04:03.10 ever learning and never arriving at the truth. 00:04:03.14\00:04:05.17 And you know in your studies in college, 00:04:06.57\00:04:09.31 sometimes you can go over, and over, and over the same thing, 00:04:09.34\00:04:11.61 but if you're not studying well, it's not sticking. 00:04:11.65\00:04:15.55 So you have to have the right technique, 00:04:15.95\00:04:17.55 the right state of mind. 00:04:17.59\00:04:18.92 But I think the reformation gave us a great model. 00:04:19.55\00:04:23.56 The Bible alone is the root of our faith, 00:04:24.33\00:04:27.26 deep Bible study, recognition that we are before God, 00:04:28.00\00:04:32.03 not church leaders that give us direction, 00:04:32.07\00:04:36.07 you know, give us the only direction, 00:04:36.10\00:04:38.47 but they're part of the structure, support structure. 00:04:38.51\00:04:41.81 Of course your pastor can give you advice. 00:04:42.34\00:04:44.15 He's someone that's studied more than most of us, perhaps. 00:04:44.18\00:04:48.32 You don't dismiss that out of hand, right? 00:04:48.85\00:04:50.89 Let's go to you again as an example. 00:04:51.35\00:04:53.02 A young man growing up in the Adventist church, 00:04:53.05\00:04:56.59 in, I hope, a good family. 00:04:57.06\00:04:59.03 What do you see as your goal in the future, 00:05:00.30\00:05:02.76 both to protect your own integrity 00:05:02.80\00:05:05.13 and to witness to other people? 00:05:05.33\00:05:06.67 Where are you going with this? 00:05:06.70\00:05:08.20 Well for me, I see my faith as the cornerstone 00:05:08.64\00:05:13.94 to everything else I do. 00:05:13.98\00:05:15.38 So most of every single decision I make is, I think... 00:05:15.68\00:05:20.38 There's a movie I remember watching, it's called, 00:05:22.15\00:05:23.89 the name of it is, What Would Jesus Do? 00:05:23.92\00:05:26.15 And for years I saw these kids with bracelets, 00:05:26.19\00:05:28.69 these bright orange bracelets on that said, 00:05:28.72\00:05:31.03 it said, "WWJD". 00:05:31.26\00:05:33.23 "What would Jesus do?" 00:05:33.26\00:05:34.76 And I see that as one of the main things in my life. 00:05:35.30\00:05:39.20 And looking forward in my life, I see no matter what I'm doing, 00:05:39.23\00:05:43.67 whether I'm a doctor, lawyer, police officer, military, 00:05:43.71\00:05:48.08 whatever God has planned for me, I'm going to always be 00:05:48.11\00:05:51.71 witnessing for Him. 00:05:51.75\00:05:53.08 You know, pointing people towards Him. 00:05:53.42\00:05:54.98 They may not accept it, but then again they might accept it. 00:05:55.02\00:05:58.89 It's a personal decision for them, but I've made my 00:05:59.79\00:06:02.32 personal decision to be always a witness for God. 00:06:02.36\00:06:04.73 And I'm trying to think, was it Daniel or Joseph that said, 00:06:06.23\00:06:08.70 he purposed in his heart... 00:06:08.73\00:06:10.07 - Daniel. - Yes. 00:06:10.10\00:06:11.43 ...to follow God. 00:06:11.47\00:06:12.80 And that's really what it's about. 00:06:12.83\00:06:14.17 None of us know the future, but we need to make that 00:06:14.20\00:06:16.71 prior decision, "This is going to be my state of mind." 00:06:16.74\00:06:20.34 And that's a decision very much in line, I think, 00:06:20.38\00:06:22.68 with practicing religious liberty. 00:06:22.71\00:06:25.18 Don't wait until the moment of test comes 00:06:25.65\00:06:29.02 to think about what you'll do in a moment of test, right? 00:06:29.48\00:06:31.79 Determine ahead of time that you're set for heaven, 00:06:32.99\00:06:36.29 you're set for God, you're set for witness. 00:06:36.32\00:06:39.29 Do you remember your grandfather? 00:06:40.36\00:06:42.70 You remember him a little bit. 00:06:44.20\00:06:45.53 I have very, very fond memories of my grandfather 00:06:45.57\00:06:47.70 coming in the morning, "Wake up, wake up. 00:06:47.74\00:06:49.90 It's bright and early. Wake up, wake up." 00:06:49.94\00:06:51.77 ~ He was a very optimistic person, wasn't he? 00:06:51.81\00:06:53.27 Very, very bouncy. 00:06:53.31\00:06:54.64 And I take some encouragement from him. 00:06:54.68\00:06:59.21 In any situation I saw him, it didn't take him but a 00:06:59.41\00:07:02.88 few seconds to share his faith with whomever he met. 00:07:02.92\00:07:09.32 It was just bubbling there. He wanted to tell. 00:07:09.36\00:07:11.73 So I know he never thought, "I must witness to this person. 00:07:12.03\00:07:14.60 I'll wait for the opportunity." 00:07:14.63\00:07:15.96 He had something. 00:07:16.16\00:07:17.50 I fact, I have a book that dad use to remind me of. 00:07:17.53\00:07:21.10 Arthur Blessitt, street Christianity. 00:07:21.87\00:07:24.21 And he says, "You've got to think of yourself 00:07:24.31\00:07:25.84 like a drug dealer." 00:07:25.87\00:07:27.24 He says, "I want to share this thing," you know. 00:07:27.98\00:07:30.58 "I've got a compulsion to share it." 00:07:31.75\00:07:33.52 And Arthur Blessitt actually at one stage back in 00:07:33.72\00:07:36.89 the 60's or 70's, the drug era, he said he use to have little 00:07:36.92\00:07:40.86 pill cases made with Bible text in it. 00:07:41.62\00:07:43.89 And he would come up to people on Hollywood Boulevard, 00:07:44.16\00:07:46.80 "Hey, you want some reds?" he'd say. 00:07:46.83\00:07:48.56 And I don't think that's really the star for everyone. 00:07:50.00\00:07:52.27 But his view was that, here he's got something that's just... 00:07:52.30\00:07:56.17 His compulsion is to give and they should want to 00:07:56.54\00:08:00.18 have this precious little thing; a faith thought. 00:08:00.21\00:08:04.05 And you know, I think you and I, and I saw it with my father, 00:08:05.01\00:08:10.59 you know, we can use our religious freedom 00:08:10.85\00:08:13.79 in a really positive way, can't we, in a powerful way. 00:08:13.82\00:08:16.69 It will change lives. 00:08:16.73\00:08:18.06 And as we do it, it makes a difference. 00:08:18.76\00:08:20.86 Again, a young man on the brink of tomorrow. 00:08:21.93\00:08:25.53 Religious liberty again, we've been talking more specifically 00:08:26.97\00:08:30.74 than we usually do about religious liberty. 00:08:30.77\00:08:32.81 Where do you think, not just you and me, 00:08:33.01\00:08:35.28 where do we go, but where is this country going 00:08:35.31\00:08:37.31 to protect religious liberty? 00:08:37.35\00:08:39.01 Crazy times we live in. 00:08:39.21\00:08:40.82 What can be done to protect it for all people? 00:08:40.85\00:08:44.52 Well, as long as in this country... 00:08:44.89\00:08:47.66 I see in the future, I'm looking... 00:08:47.69\00:08:49.86 This is just my prediction. 00:08:50.06\00:08:51.99 I see it, I mean, with the pope coming and speaking to Congress, 00:08:52.39\00:08:56.30 the first pope ever to speak to Congress and the House, 00:08:56.33\00:09:00.24 I see it going towards a Catholic country. 00:09:00.54\00:09:04.17 - I mean... ~ Well that's not good, is it? 00:09:04.21\00:09:06.68 No, it's not good. 00:09:06.71\00:09:08.04 We don't want it to become a monolithic 00:09:08.08\00:09:09.68 religio-political movement. 00:09:09.71\00:09:12.85 I also see, I'm not saying President Trump will do this, 00:09:12.88\00:09:16.85 but a future president maybe, making the separation between 00:09:16.89\00:09:20.36 the church and the state less of a separation 00:09:20.39\00:09:23.12 and more of a church and state bond. 00:09:23.16\00:09:25.56 Well does it bother you? 00:09:25.66\00:09:27.00 I don't know if you read it, that the present 00:09:27.03\00:09:28.46 Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, at the time he was being 00:09:28.50\00:09:32.20 confirmed, he said publicly he didn't believe in the 00:09:32.23\00:09:34.34 separation of church and state. 00:09:34.37\00:09:35.74 You told me about that. 00:09:35.77\00:09:37.47 And I heard it briefly, but I didn't believe it because of 00:09:37.51\00:09:40.34 all of the fake stuff. 00:09:40.38\00:09:41.71 ~ He said it in some obscure statement. 00:09:41.74\00:09:43.08 And now he says he believes in religious liberty, but... 00:09:43.11\00:09:45.55 So would you encourage our present administration to 00:09:45.75\00:09:48.72 really defend religious liberty, not religious entitlement, 00:09:48.75\00:09:52.32 but religious liberty? 00:09:52.35\00:09:53.69 I believe that, yes, I would encourage 00:09:53.72\00:09:56.12 our current administration to not only encourage 00:09:56.16\00:09:59.26 the separation of church and state, but encourage 00:09:59.29\00:10:01.16 individuals to believe what they want, how they want, 00:10:01.20\00:10:04.67 when they want to worship, however which way their heart 00:10:04.70\00:10:07.94 believes that they should worship. 00:10:07.97\00:10:09.50 Watching the news you might be inclined to think 00:10:14.01\00:10:16.18 that we live in a time of reform. 00:10:16.21\00:10:18.25 There is a litany of public officials and their heinous acts 00:10:18.58\00:10:23.22 that are causing resignations and moral meltdowns 00:10:23.25\00:10:26.76 all around us, but I don't think that qualifies 00:10:26.79\00:10:30.03 as national reform or an example of even personal reform. 00:10:30.06\00:10:34.46 I look at the Bible, and there's the example of King Josiah, 00:10:34.83\00:10:37.70 a boy king, who came to power at a time of great wickedness. 00:10:38.43\00:10:41.74 There was a coup that brought him to the front. 00:10:41.84\00:10:44.87 He was backed by godly people. 00:10:44.91\00:10:47.14 And he took matters into his hand, guided by the Word of God, 00:10:47.18\00:10:51.48 and a calling of the people back to acknowledge God 00:10:51.58\00:10:54.55 and to read His Word. 00:10:54.58\00:10:55.92 Surely we need that today. 00:10:56.32\00:10:58.29 The reformation was characterized by this 00:10:58.62\00:11:01.82 sort of a dynamic. 00:11:01.86\00:11:03.39 That was 500 years ago. 00:11:03.99\00:11:05.79 But why should something so powerful 500 years ago 00:11:05.99\00:11:10.27 be confined to the past? 00:11:10.47\00:11:12.10 How about today? 00:11:12.13\00:11:13.47 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:11:14.10\00:11:17.21
