Welcome back to the Liberty Insider, 00:00:05.63\00:00:07.44 before the break with guest Christopher Steed. 00:00:07.47\00:00:10.47 And I'm the host Lincoln Steed. 00:00:10.51\00:00:13.27 The names are familiar to both of us, son and... 00:00:13.31\00:00:17.18 dad and son. 00:00:17.21\00:00:19.05 Let's get back to where I started the segment 00:00:19.08\00:00:21.72 talking about our visit to Israel. 00:00:21.75\00:00:25.05 I think it was the second last day of our visit, 00:00:25.09\00:00:28.69 we went down to the Dead Sea, 00:00:28.72\00:00:31.83 not the Red Sea, it was the Dead Sea. 00:00:31.86\00:00:33.96 And overlooking the Dead Sea, remember, there was... 00:00:34.00\00:00:38.17 we took a cable car up, what was plateau, 00:00:38.20\00:00:41.00 do you remember what it was called? 00:00:41.04\00:00:43.17 Off the top of my head, I'm going to have to say, 00:00:43.20\00:00:45.31 "No, I do not remember." 00:00:45.34\00:00:46.68 Masada. Remember Masada? I do remember. 00:00:46.71\00:00:49.04 It was very high, very windy. Yeah. 00:00:49.08\00:00:52.91 But it was a very beautiful place. 00:00:52.95\00:00:56.72 I mean, I actually still have in my room. 00:00:56.75\00:00:59.49 I have a little rock about this big, 00:00:59.52\00:01:03.59 and on it there's some... 00:01:03.63\00:01:05.06 I think it's either scratch marks 00:01:05.09\00:01:06.59 or it looks to me like it's some writing. 00:01:06.63\00:01:09.36 And I remember just being up there 00:01:09.40\00:01:11.27 and just looking at the city and saying, 00:01:11.30\00:01:14.70 "Wow, this was a major, major 00:01:14.74\00:01:18.47 city back in Bible times." 00:01:18.51\00:01:22.18 And it was a fortress originally 00:01:22.21\00:01:25.11 that Herod had built. 00:01:25.15\00:01:27.85 But they said he never really was there. 00:01:27.88\00:01:30.52 But in the last Jewish rebellion at AD 70, 00:01:30.55\00:01:35.42 which collapsed and the Romans destroyed them all. 00:01:35.46\00:01:38.23 It's worth remembering in light of President Obama's 00:01:38.26\00:01:42.26 designation of the capital city. 00:01:42.30\00:01:44.87 The last time that the Jewish people 00:01:44.90\00:01:47.40 controlled the destiny of that city 00:01:47.44\00:01:50.44 that was a true Jewish city was nearly 2,000 years ago. 00:01:50.47\00:01:55.78 The Romans destroyed it as a defective political entity. 00:01:55.81\00:02:00.05 They leveled the city, killed about, 00:02:00.08\00:02:03.12 I think, a million people, 00:02:03.15\00:02:04.75 and then nearly as many were sold into slavery 00:02:04.79\00:02:07.19 and just dispersed the rest. 00:02:07.22\00:02:09.46 It was the end of them. 00:02:09.49\00:02:12.06 But a few holdouts after the original destruction, 00:02:12.09\00:02:15.46 went to Masada, I think 900 of them. 00:02:15.50\00:02:18.73 And you know that if you're sitting at the top, 00:02:18.77\00:02:22.17 there were the rocks or whatever, 00:02:22.20\00:02:24.21 you could pretty much roll it down 00:02:24.24\00:02:25.61 on anyone coming up at you 00:02:25.64\00:02:27.21 and an army couldn't easily get up. 00:02:27.24\00:02:29.51 In fact, I'm surprised that they got 00:02:29.54\00:02:30.88 the cable car up there. 00:02:30.91\00:02:32.25 Yeah, it was the view looking down, 00:02:32.28\00:02:35.22 I mean, it was... 00:02:35.25\00:02:36.99 I wouldn't say it was completely vertical 00:02:37.02\00:02:38.35 but it was... 00:02:38.39\00:02:39.72 Pretty close. It was pretty close. 00:02:39.75\00:02:41.09 In the US you call them mesa. 00:02:41.12\00:02:43.63 A flat top thing that has cliff-like sides. 00:02:43.66\00:02:47.83 And you remember them telling, 00:02:47.86\00:02:49.26 our guide was very good explaining it 00:02:49.30\00:02:50.77 how did the Romans conquered in the end. 00:02:50.80\00:02:53.37 They one by one built... 00:02:53.40\00:02:55.67 but it looked like it was a ramp. 00:02:55.70\00:02:57.77 Yeah, basically they built made the mountain, 00:02:57.81\00:02:59.84 added to the mountain to give it a curved... 00:02:59.87\00:03:01.31 To give it a slope so they could walk up it. 00:03:01.34\00:03:03.51 And even then they couldn't have done 00:03:03.55\00:03:04.88 that except they used Jewish slaves. 00:03:04.91\00:03:06.98 And the defenders wouldn't harm, 00:03:07.02\00:03:09.32 throw anything down on their fellow Jews. 00:03:09.35\00:03:11.85 So it was inevitable that eventually, 00:03:11.89\00:03:13.66 that to built this, took 00:03:13.69\00:03:15.02 I think a year or two years to do it. 00:03:15.06\00:03:17.29 And remember the rest of the story? 00:03:17.33\00:03:19.46 What happened is they came up 00:03:19.49\00:03:21.40 to where they could push the siege engines up 00:03:21.43\00:03:23.23 and destroy that. 00:03:23.26\00:03:24.70 I remember him saying... 00:03:24.73\00:03:26.27 When they opened the gates, the city was deserted. 00:03:26.30\00:03:30.37 Everybody had killed themselves. 00:03:30.41\00:03:31.74 Everybody had killed themselves. 00:03:31.77\00:03:33.11 And they have the speech recorded from the leader. 00:03:33.14\00:03:36.14 He says, you know, 00:03:36.18\00:03:37.61 "We've taken our lives rather than let the Romans kill us. 00:03:37.65\00:03:41.95 It was inevitable." 00:03:41.98\00:03:43.59 But they left food there 00:03:43.62\00:03:44.95 so that they won't think we did in desperation, 00:03:44.99\00:03:46.96 we had plenty of food. 00:03:46.99\00:03:48.52 And he gave a wonderful outline of the value of freedom 00:03:48.56\00:03:52.96 and standing up against this despotic power. 00:03:52.99\00:03:56.87 Well, that was a political thing 00:03:56.90\00:03:59.17 between what once God's people and a persecuting power. 00:03:59.20\00:04:05.91 But it's certainly an encouragement 00:04:05.94\00:04:07.51 to anyone to keep their faith no matter what the opposition. 00:04:07.54\00:04:11.68 Remember, our God said, Israel just decided, "Never again." 00:04:11.71\00:04:15.32 They're not going to kill themselves, 00:04:15.35\00:04:16.69 they're not going to give up, 00:04:16.72\00:04:18.05 they're going to fight till the last man. 00:04:18.09\00:04:19.42 They will. 00:04:19.45\00:04:20.79 And remember he told us 00:04:20.82\00:04:22.16 how the Israeli officers take 00:04:22.19\00:04:24.09 their oath of loyalty in Masada, 00:04:24.13\00:04:27.70 very inspiring to see how another little country 00:04:27.73\00:04:31.13 thinks about itself and the high ideals 00:04:31.17\00:04:34.40 that they've gotten because of this example of history. 00:04:34.44\00:04:38.84 But I do think in standing for our faith 00:04:38.87\00:04:41.41 in exercising our religious liberty 00:04:41.44\00:04:43.61 which we have regardless, we agreed on that. 00:04:43.65\00:04:46.78 Yes. Not coming from the US. 00:04:46.82\00:04:48.38 Remember what did Thomas Jefferson say 00:04:48.42\00:04:49.92 in the Declaration of Independence? 00:04:49.95\00:04:52.12 Let's test it. You had it in high school. 00:04:52.15\00:04:54.19 I remember we had to memorize it in high school, but... 00:04:54.22\00:04:56.93 It says, "We hold..." "We hold these truths..." 00:04:56.96\00:05:01.03 Yes, what's the next? It's slipping my memory. 00:05:01.06\00:05:04.20 "To be self-evident." Yeah. 00:05:04.23\00:05:08.50 That's what he said, which is very interesting. 00:05:08.54\00:05:10.77 They were recognizing what was already established, 00:05:10.81\00:05:14.11 and religiously, but he was one of them, 00:05:14.14\00:05:16.21 the men are created free by God. 00:05:16.24\00:05:19.01 And religious liberty in the truest spiritual sense, 00:05:19.05\00:05:22.32 we're freed from the power of sin. 00:05:22.35\00:05:23.89 You have it. 00:05:23.92\00:05:26.59 So, you know, living forward in this country 00:05:26.62\00:05:29.52 is easier than most. 00:05:29.56\00:05:31.03 But it ultimately derives from a spiritual thing, 00:05:31.06\00:05:35.16 you know, spiritual charter. 00:05:35.20\00:05:37.00 And in a real world 00:05:37.03\00:05:38.90 where there's genocides on occasion, 00:05:38.93\00:05:42.84 even in the United States, I love this country. 00:05:42.87\00:05:46.17 But against the moments, 00:05:46.21\00:05:49.24 the governor of Illinois wanted them killed on sight, 00:05:49.28\00:05:51.58 extermination order. 00:05:51.61\00:05:53.48 And don't even get into 00:05:53.52\00:05:55.55 some of the Indian tribes and so on. 00:05:55.58\00:05:58.32 Not a good story, 00:05:58.35\00:05:59.72 men dealing with other men and other faiths. 00:05:59.75\00:06:02.76 But it's our privilege, I think, isn't it, 00:06:02.79\00:06:04.83 to decide that we will be faithful 00:06:04.86\00:06:08.76 no matter what the cost. 00:06:08.80\00:06:11.03 Remember the song? I know you sung too. 00:06:11.07\00:06:12.63 But when I was a kid, I always sing it, Dare to be... 00:06:12.67\00:06:15.60 Dare to be a Christian. 00:06:15.64\00:06:16.97 No, Dare to be a Daniel. Dare to be a Daniel. 00:06:17.01\00:06:19.34 Standing by our purpose true, heading God's command. 00:06:19.37\00:06:24.51 Isn't it something, do you think 00:06:24.55\00:06:26.28 that a young person could answer 00:06:26.31\00:06:28.88 that challenge today? 00:06:28.92\00:06:30.25 Actually, Daniel is my... 00:06:30.29\00:06:32.32 When I was asked in many summer school classes from going, 00:06:32.35\00:06:35.79 from primary school in Sabbath school 00:06:35.82\00:06:38.69 to even now people ask me, "Who is your Bible hero?" 00:06:38.73\00:06:41.73 And I say, "Daniel." Yeah. 00:06:41.76\00:06:43.50 Because he stood by what he believes. 00:06:43.53\00:06:46.13 And I mean, who else would you look up to? 00:06:46.17\00:06:49.64 Would you look up to someone 00:06:49.67\00:06:52.21 who at the slightest bit of confrontation, 00:06:52.24\00:06:54.64 "I don't, I'm not a Christian, no." 00:06:54.68\00:06:57.31 Or as someone who, "I'm a Christian, 00:06:57.35\00:06:58.75 I don't care what you do to me but I'm a Christian"? 00:06:58.78\00:07:01.02 Yeah. 00:07:01.05\00:07:02.48 I mean, that's what we're called to. 00:07:02.52\00:07:04.75 And Daniel is a great story. He wasn't just a stubborn guy. 00:07:04.79\00:07:08.92 He was an educated person, a godly man, 00:07:08.96\00:07:12.89 and he was at the center of power. 00:07:12.93\00:07:15.46 And yet on a number of occasions his life 00:07:15.50\00:07:17.27 was on the line, and even... 00:07:17.30\00:07:19.43 Remember the story begins, 00:07:19.47\00:07:20.80 and I'm sure many of you have read 00:07:20.84\00:07:22.74 and remember the Bible story. 00:07:22.77\00:07:24.37 But as a young man taken captive 00:07:24.41\00:07:26.88 from a previous destruction of Israel, 00:07:26.91\00:07:31.01 you know, we were been talking about an AD 70, 00:07:31.05\00:07:32.81 but King Nebuchadnezzar wiped it out. 00:07:32.85\00:07:37.45 And I don't think most people, at least when I was a kid, 00:07:37.49\00:07:40.49 they didn't explain it correctly. 00:07:40.52\00:07:42.62 There were some people left around Jerusalem, 00:07:42.66\00:07:45.49 and Nebuchadnezzar wanted it to be neutral and controlled. 00:07:45.53\00:07:49.40 And the way to do it was to take hostages 00:07:49.43\00:07:52.07 from the ruling class. 00:07:52.10\00:07:55.20 The way it was told to us is they were taking skilled guys 00:07:55.24\00:07:57.87 to help in the palace and a little element of that. 00:07:57.91\00:08:00.61 They were essentially hostages. 00:08:00.64\00:08:03.08 And another element in the past 00:08:03.11\00:08:04.85 that was done right up to World War I 00:08:04.88\00:08:07.52 was you would marry 00:08:07.55\00:08:10.29 the daughters of the ruling class to control 00:08:10.32\00:08:13.15 'cause again they were hostages. 00:08:13.19\00:08:14.89 So Daniel was a hostage perhaps from a wealthy class. 00:08:14.92\00:08:19.09 But that didn't mean that they were safe forever. 00:08:19.13\00:08:21.53 They could be destroyed or neutralized pretty readily. 00:08:21.56\00:08:26.43 And so he didn't do what the king said. 00:08:26.47\00:08:29.80 There was a good chance that he would be disciplined 00:08:29.84\00:08:31.64 in a very severe physical way. 00:08:31.67\00:08:34.31 But he had faith, and he says 00:08:34.34\00:08:35.68 to the supervisor of the eunuchs 00:08:35.71\00:08:41.75 which is interesting, 00:08:41.78\00:08:43.12 Daniel was a eunuch almost certainly, 00:08:43.15\00:08:46.92 which is another way to take away 00:08:46.96\00:08:48.32 the power of the people there. 00:08:48.36\00:08:51.56 They were to be held to ransom but not allowed to flourish, 00:08:51.59\00:08:54.50 not allowed to multiply. 00:08:54.53\00:08:56.33 And he says, you know, "Prove us. 00:08:56.36\00:08:58.10 Put us on this diet and see." 00:08:58.13\00:08:59.67 And they were allowed to continue with that diet. 00:08:59.70\00:09:03.00 Then later when the King's dream 00:09:03.04\00:09:08.01 was beyond any understanding of his wise men, 00:09:08.04\00:09:12.58 the word went out, "Kill all the wise men." 00:09:12.61\00:09:14.32 And Daniel was a wise man. 00:09:14.35\00:09:15.68 In other words, he was one of the intellectuals. 00:09:15.72\00:09:17.62 And so at threat of his life, he sends a word to the king, 00:09:17.65\00:09:21.36 "I can give you the meaning of the dream." 00:09:21.39\00:09:24.86 We need to know as Christians 00:09:24.89\00:09:26.43 that we have the answer 00:09:26.46\00:09:27.80 to a lot of the religious conflicts in the world. 00:09:27.83\00:09:32.60 It's crossed, and witnessing, and religious freedom. 00:09:32.63\00:09:35.60 Don't you think? 00:09:35.64\00:09:36.97 I think in dealing with my own life 00:09:37.01\00:09:40.94 and dealing with other people in life 00:09:40.98\00:09:44.01 how each person has to believe what they want, 00:09:44.05\00:09:47.22 but at the same time, 00:09:47.25\00:09:48.95 we should tell them what we believe. 00:09:48.98\00:09:50.89 That's our right, that's our privilege, 00:09:50.92\00:09:53.66 and we should stick to it. 00:09:53.69\00:09:58.33 In the Bible, 00:09:58.36\00:09:59.69 waters can mean quite deep things. 00:09:59.73\00:10:03.97 You know, we're told that waters mean peoples, 00:10:04.00\00:10:08.27 and nations, groups of human beings. 00:10:08.30\00:10:12.27 When we look at Israel, ironically, we think of waters, 00:10:12.31\00:10:17.08 we think of the Sea of Galilee, we think of the Dead Sea 00:10:17.11\00:10:22.02 even though that's a land 00:10:22.05\00:10:23.39 that is not characterized by water. 00:10:23.42\00:10:25.69 It's an incredibly dry place. 00:10:25.72\00:10:29.76 I think prophetically that the Bible says 00:10:29.79\00:10:31.99 that at the very end of time, 00:10:32.03\00:10:34.00 the River Euphrates will dry up. 00:10:34.03\00:10:37.43 That tells me that human existence itself 00:10:37.47\00:10:40.07 is going to be threatened at a very dangerous end time. 00:10:40.10\00:10:44.24 But to proclaim, liberty 00:10:44.27\00:10:46.81 depends upon proclaiming it to people. 00:10:46.84\00:10:50.41 And so I believe no matter 00:10:50.45\00:10:52.11 what happens in the Middle East, 00:10:52.15\00:10:53.48 no matter how destitute our human condition may see, 00:10:53.52\00:10:56.58 no matter how suicidal our leaders might be, 00:10:56.62\00:10:59.62 we still need to proclaim liberty throughout the land, 00:10:59.65\00:11:02.92 religious freedom for all who will hear it, 00:11:02.96\00:11:05.39 and a coming Lord is a Savior from this desperate situation, 00:11:05.43\00:11:10.87 the Liberator, the Freedom Giver, 00:11:10.90\00:11:14.14 the Giver of all true and perfect gifts. 00:11:14.17\00:11:17.51 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:11:17.54\00:11:20.51
