Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:04.80\00:00:07.07 Before the break with guest Christopher Steed, 00:00:07.10\00:00:10.11 and son, and heir, 00:00:10.14\00:00:12.04 and as I joke with him, not just heir, hair. 00:00:12.07\00:00:16.88 We were talking about... 00:00:16.91\00:00:20.32 I envy your hair, son. 00:00:20.35\00:00:22.02 I used to have it. 00:00:22.05\00:00:23.62 We were talking about religious liberty, 00:00:23.65\00:00:24.99 of course, and you'd given 00:00:25.02\00:00:27.36 even your personal testimony on that. 00:00:27.39\00:00:28.86 But I want to go back to something 00:00:28.89\00:00:30.29 that we should have covered. 00:00:30.33\00:00:32.86 We just alluded to the religious liberty, 00:00:32.89\00:00:36.33 of course, it doesn't matter what the government says, 00:00:36.36\00:00:39.07 what laws provided, 00:00:39.10\00:00:40.84 its basis is from God, isn't it? 00:00:40.87\00:00:44.01 And there's something 00:00:44.04\00:00:45.37 that you've heard me talk about, 00:00:45.41\00:00:46.74 but I just want to drop in that discussion, 00:00:46.78\00:00:49.64 the fact that the very first time, 00:00:49.68\00:00:52.61 maybe you think about it, 00:00:52.65\00:00:53.98 what was the first time Jesus spoke to a group 00:00:54.02\00:00:57.82 as He began His ministry? 00:00:57.85\00:01:00.12 What was one of the first? 00:01:00.16\00:01:02.86 One of first as I can remember from back 00:01:02.89\00:01:04.99 when I was reading it or from when first... 00:01:05.03\00:01:07.90 This is a test. 00:01:07.93\00:01:09.66 From one of the first ones that I remember Him 00:01:09.70\00:01:12.40 actually speaking to a crowd, in my opinion, 00:01:12.43\00:01:16.64 was at the wedding feast 00:01:16.67\00:01:18.77 when He turned the water to wine, 00:01:18.81\00:01:20.44 afterwards I believe, if I remember correctly... 00:01:20.48\00:01:22.28 Well, that is. 00:01:22.31\00:01:23.65 He didn't really speak so much, He provided the wine. 00:01:23.68\00:01:26.58 Then the other occasion, 00:01:26.61\00:01:27.95 but it's more important for His ministry 00:01:27.98\00:01:30.79 is when He was... 00:01:30.82\00:01:32.15 He came as a young man 00:01:32.19\00:01:33.52 at the beginning of His ministry 00:01:33.56\00:01:34.89 with the few followers to the synagogue 00:01:34.92\00:01:37.69 and the priest gave Him the Bible to read, 00:01:37.73\00:01:39.43 you remember that? 00:01:39.46\00:01:40.80 I do remember that. 00:01:40.83\00:01:42.16 What book did he give Him, do you remember that? 00:01:42.20\00:01:43.53 I don't remember that. 00:01:43.57\00:01:44.90 He gave Him the scroll, 00:01:44.93\00:01:46.27 they didn't have printed books bound like now, 00:01:46.30\00:01:48.84 they were a long roll. 00:01:48.87\00:01:50.27 And since we couldn't have a huge roll 00:01:50.31\00:01:52.61 for the whole Bible that have roll for each book. 00:01:52.64\00:01:55.14 Sometimes several rolls if it was a long book. 00:01:55.18\00:01:58.38 He was given the scroll of Isaiah, 00:01:58.41\00:02:00.38 Old Testament book. 00:02:00.42\00:02:01.98 And it says He chose chapter 61. 00:02:02.02\00:02:06.62 And it says, 00:02:06.65\00:02:08.22 "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me," 00:02:08.26\00:02:10.13 and He took it for Himself. 00:02:10.16\00:02:11.49 He says, "This is fulfilled." 00:02:11.53\00:02:12.86 He says, "The Spirit of the Lord 00:02:12.89\00:02:14.23 is upon me 00:02:14.26\00:02:15.60 because He has anointed me 00:02:15.63\00:02:16.97 to preach good news to the captives," 00:02:17.00\00:02:19.27 and then at the end it says, 00:02:19.30\00:02:20.64 "To set up liberty, those who are oppressed." 00:02:20.67\00:02:25.17 Now, that's the gospel, 00:02:25.21\00:02:26.71 but it's also a pretty good description 00:02:26.74\00:02:29.21 of what it means to have religious liberty. 00:02:29.24\00:02:31.01 It is. 00:02:31.05\00:02:32.38 Freedom, freedom from sin and all of the negatives 00:02:32.41\00:02:36.32 that come from it, 00:02:36.35\00:02:37.69 and religious liberty is using 00:02:37.72\00:02:39.92 that freedom and proclaiming that freedom. 00:02:39.95\00:02:43.66 You do that wherever you are. 00:02:43.69\00:02:46.16 You could do it just as well in a communist country 00:02:46.19\00:02:49.23 or in a free country, couldn't you? 00:02:49.26\00:02:50.63 You could. 00:02:50.67\00:02:52.00 I mean, maybe not practice as well, 00:02:52.03\00:02:54.57 but it wouldn't determine whether you do it, 00:02:54.60\00:02:58.44 but it's a nice plus in the United States 00:02:58.47\00:03:01.04 where the constitution sort of affirms 00:03:01.08\00:03:03.78 your right to do that. 00:03:03.81\00:03:05.38 I heard people walk up to me in Walmart or when I worked 00:03:05.41\00:03:10.42 at Lowe's actually I had a lady... 00:03:10.45\00:03:12.55 And I was loading her car, 00:03:12.59\00:03:13.92 she bought, I believe she bought a push miller 00:03:13.96\00:03:15.49 for her husband one that was all wheel drive, 00:03:15.52\00:03:18.49 and I was helping her and she asked me, 00:03:18.53\00:03:21.26 "You remind me a friend of mine who is a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:03:21.30\00:03:24.57 Are you a Seventh-day Adventist by the way?" 00:03:24.60\00:03:27.24 "Actually, yes, ma'am I am." 00:03:27.27\00:03:28.60 And she is like, "Well, I mean, my friend and I talk, 00:03:28.64\00:03:32.21 but she really doesn't tell me much, 00:03:32.24\00:03:34.94 is there anything that you can tell me 00:03:34.98\00:03:36.51 about like your church, your religion?" 00:03:36.54\00:03:39.11 I was like, 00:03:39.15\00:03:40.48 "Well, for me the Sabbath is the day of the rest, 00:03:40.52\00:03:42.45 you know, it's the day 00:03:42.48\00:03:43.82 where I don't have to worry about school, 00:03:43.85\00:03:45.19 where I don't have to worry about work, 00:03:45.22\00:03:46.55 where I don't have to really worry about anything. 00:03:46.59\00:03:48.49 I mean, I get up in the morning, 00:03:48.52\00:03:49.86 I go to church, I listen to the pastor." 00:03:49.89\00:03:53.29 We have a great pastor. 00:03:53.33\00:03:55.73 And she was like, "Well..." 00:03:55.76\00:03:57.10 He's not paying you to make it, didn't he? 00:03:57.13\00:03:59.27 He is not paying me to say that... 00:03:59.30\00:04:00.64 And don't they? 00:04:00.67\00:04:02.60 But, you know, our pastor is a very good pastor. 00:04:02.64\00:04:03.97 And I was like, 00:04:04.01\00:04:05.34 "You should come to our church one day." 00:04:05.37\00:04:06.71 And she said, "I'll think about that, 00:04:06.74\00:04:08.08 what church do you attend?" 00:04:08.11\00:04:09.44 I said, "Well, I go to, there's a few that I go to, 00:04:09.48\00:04:10.81 but the main one I go to is Willowbrook Church." 00:04:10.85\00:04:12.68 And she's like, 00:04:12.71\00:04:14.05 "Isn't that out near the Pittsburg High School?" 00:04:14.08\00:04:17.29 I was like, "Yeah, it's close by, yeah." 00:04:17.32\00:04:19.69 And she is like, 00:04:19.72\00:04:21.06 "I'll see you next time over there." 00:04:21.09\00:04:22.76 I said, "All right, see you then." 00:04:22.79\00:04:24.46 I think it was the either the week 00:04:24.49\00:04:26.13 after that or the, a few weeks after that, 00:04:26.16\00:04:28.73 I see her at the church and after church she came to me 00:04:28.76\00:04:31.07 and, she's like, 00:04:31.10\00:04:33.57 "I don't know what to say, 00:04:33.60\00:04:34.94 I've never been to a church like this before, it's amazing. 00:04:34.97\00:04:38.27 I'm going to come again." 00:04:38.31\00:04:39.84 And last time I was there, I saw her again, 00:04:39.87\00:04:44.01 and she thanked me. 00:04:44.05\00:04:45.38 Well, that's good. 00:04:45.41\00:04:46.75 That was a nice chance to witness 00:04:46.78\00:04:48.12 using your religious freedom. 00:04:48.15\00:04:51.65 And you didn't think... 00:04:51.69\00:04:53.02 I'm responding this way because the state says I can. 00:04:53.05\00:04:56.66 You are responding that way because... 00:04:56.69\00:04:58.43 'Cause I can. 00:04:58.46\00:05:00.60 And you love Jesus Christ. I do. 00:05:00.63\00:05:02.16 And what's in the Bible, right? 00:05:02.20\00:05:04.47 So that's the compulsion you're under. 00:05:04.50\00:05:06.90 And this is what I try to get through to people. 00:05:06.94\00:05:09.34 It's nice as well as that, that you have a state 00:05:09.37\00:05:12.27 that isn't going to fight you as you do that. 00:05:12.31\00:05:13.68 That's right. 00:05:13.71\00:05:15.04 But a true Christian, 00:05:15.08\00:05:16.41 even if they're in a difficult circumstance, 00:05:16.44\00:05:18.55 you would like to think... 00:05:18.58\00:05:19.91 In fact, I think 00:05:19.95\00:05:21.28 that truest Christian will still share their faith, 00:05:21.32\00:05:23.75 obviously in a more careful way. 00:05:23.79\00:05:25.69 Of course. 00:05:25.72\00:05:28.26 I remember reading a story, 00:05:28.29\00:05:31.19 once in North Korea, 00:05:31.23\00:05:34.96 there was a case of few Christians were meeting 00:05:35.00\00:05:37.13 in a home, reading their Bibles, 00:05:37.17\00:05:39.73 and there was a knock at the door. 00:05:39.77\00:05:41.64 And they immediately hid the Bibles 00:05:41.67\00:05:43.17 and made that like they were just socializing, 00:05:43.20\00:05:45.91 and some of the officials came in and they said, 00:05:45.94\00:05:48.64 "We've gotten reports 00:05:48.68\00:05:50.01 that there are Christians here." 00:05:50.05\00:05:51.38 Now, it could mean your life in North Korea. 00:05:51.41\00:05:55.18 You know, they just acted innocent, 00:05:55.22\00:05:57.35 and so the officials went through 00:05:57.39\00:05:58.85 and searched the house 00:05:58.89\00:06:00.22 and one of the worshippers soar with horror, 00:06:00.26\00:06:03.12 they had forgotten to put one of their Bibles away. 00:06:03.16\00:06:06.03 And they saw this official go-by, 00:06:06.06\00:06:08.00 and he looked straight at it, and just kept going. 00:06:08.03\00:06:11.07 And I thought, man, 00:06:11.10\00:06:12.43 you know, has God made him born. 00:06:12.47\00:06:14.20 And then they left, they said, 00:06:14.24\00:06:15.57 "Well, you know, we've got this report 00:06:15.60\00:06:17.14 but don't you do anything like that." 00:06:17.17\00:06:19.27 And a few minutes after they left 00:06:19.31\00:06:20.71 there was another knock at the door, 00:06:20.74\00:06:22.08 that was that same official, and he said, "I saw the Bible." 00:06:22.11\00:06:25.18 He says, "I'm a fellow Christian." 00:06:25.21\00:06:27.32 He says, 00:06:27.35\00:06:28.68 "I'm glad you're worshiping God." 00:06:28.72\00:06:30.05 And then they shared a bit. 00:06:30.09\00:06:31.95 You know, that's not secretive 00:06:31.99\00:06:34.42 to the point of denying your faith, 00:06:34.46\00:06:35.99 that's the protection that has to happen. 00:06:36.02\00:06:38.63 But in any circumstance, 00:06:38.66\00:06:40.70 I believe this freedom that Christ gave us 00:06:40.73\00:06:43.03 the wonderful hope of the future life, 00:06:43.06\00:06:46.23 but a hope for the better life in your mind now. 00:06:46.27\00:06:49.20 You might suffer persecution, 00:06:49.24\00:06:50.64 but you have mental fulfillment. 00:06:50.67\00:06:53.58 You know, that drives us on, doesn't it to worship? 00:06:53.61\00:06:56.18 It does. 00:06:56.21\00:06:57.55 And you felt good telling that person, I'm sure... 00:06:57.58\00:07:00.02 Yeah, when I saw her at church 00:07:00.05\00:07:01.38 and when she thanked me for inviting her, 00:07:01.42\00:07:04.02 I felt this warm bubbly feeling right here, like, 00:07:04.05\00:07:06.89 "Well, I did something good." 00:07:06.92\00:07:10.03 But I've also had neighbors in the neighborhood, 00:07:10.06\00:07:13.60 I remember one in particular, 00:07:13.63\00:07:14.96 it was this elderly lady that lives. 00:07:15.00\00:07:17.63 I believe it's like four to five houses down 00:07:17.67\00:07:19.57 around the corner from us, 00:07:19.60\00:07:21.07 I noticed she got this massive package 00:07:21.10\00:07:24.44 that was just sitting in front of a door. 00:07:24.47\00:07:27.28 And so I was visiting 00:07:27.31\00:07:28.78 'cause her grandson is one of my best friends, 00:07:28.81\00:07:30.91 and he was there and I knock on the door, 00:07:30.95\00:07:34.58 and I see this generous package and I was like, 00:07:34.62\00:07:36.42 "Do you want me to bring this inside for you?" 00:07:36.45\00:07:38.15 And she looks down and she's like, 00:07:38.19\00:07:39.52 "Oh, it's here finally." 00:07:39.55\00:07:42.79 And when I took it inside, 00:07:42.82\00:07:44.69 she opened it up, and she was like, 00:07:44.73\00:07:46.06 "Could you organize these for me?" 00:07:46.09\00:07:47.70 And it was the entire, 00:07:47.73\00:07:49.50 there was the Great Controversy books in there... 00:07:49.53\00:07:51.67 The Conflicts of the Ages series it's called. 00:07:51.70\00:07:53.50 Yes, the Conflicts of the Ages series, 00:07:53.54\00:07:55.04 plus some other. 00:07:55.07\00:07:56.40 There was a few Bibles in there, 00:07:56.44\00:07:57.77 few other things, and she is like, 00:07:57.81\00:07:59.91 "I'm going to start a home ministry, 00:07:59.94\00:08:01.28 from right here in my home for the..." 00:08:01.31\00:08:02.81 She has a book club 00:08:02.84\00:08:04.18 that gets together at her house every, 00:08:04.21\00:08:05.58 I believe she told me every week or two. 00:08:05.61\00:08:07.72 And one week she introduced the Great Controversy to them, 00:08:07.75\00:08:10.59 just the one book. 00:08:10.62\00:08:12.49 And they read through it, and a few other ladies decided 00:08:12.52\00:08:15.12 to get back together every Friday evening 00:08:15.16\00:08:18.19 and have their own Bible study. 00:08:18.23\00:08:20.20 And that's a very practical way to share your faith 00:08:20.23\00:08:23.33 and to exercise your religious freedom. 00:08:23.37\00:08:25.43 And at the beginning of the program I believe, 00:08:25.47\00:08:27.84 I made an allusion to the reformation. 00:08:27.87\00:08:30.01 You did. 00:08:30.04\00:08:31.37 Phenomenon of the reformation especially as it first began, 00:08:31.41\00:08:35.64 there were official burnings of Martin Luther's writings. 00:08:35.68\00:08:39.68 Those that oppose the truth and the... 00:08:39.71\00:08:41.68 By definition the religious liberty of those 00:08:41.72\00:08:43.65 that differ from them, 00:08:43.69\00:08:45.02 often try to restrict it by destroying the Word. 00:08:45.05\00:08:47.66 Yep. 00:08:47.69\00:08:50.59 We don't see that much anymore, but we're in a new era, 00:08:50.63\00:08:53.50 we're on the internet and all there is. 00:08:53.53\00:08:55.90 But I think we're going to see 00:08:55.93\00:08:58.47 with particularly religious views 00:08:58.50\00:09:01.77 that some people don't like, 00:09:01.80\00:09:03.14 attempts to block different channels 00:09:03.17\00:09:05.47 that amounts to the same. 00:09:05.51\00:09:06.94 Not only block different channels, 00:09:06.98\00:09:08.38 but change the wording of certain things 00:09:08.41\00:09:12.01 to make it sound like, like a different thing, 00:09:12.05\00:09:14.45 like, I was on Facebook a few nights ago 00:09:14.48\00:09:17.85 and I was just going through, you know, looking at pictures, 00:09:17.89\00:09:21.62 and I see this one article and it said, 00:09:21.66\00:09:24.19 "God is dead, Satan is the only one." 00:09:24.23\00:09:27.36 And so I clicked on it, like, interested, like, 00:09:27.40\00:09:29.50 why would someone put this out there? 00:09:29.53\00:09:31.43 And it said... 00:09:31.47\00:09:33.34 They were quoting the Bible, and it said, 00:09:33.37\00:09:35.80 "He laid in the tomb. 00:09:35.84\00:09:37.17 And that was it." 00:09:37.21\00:09:38.54 And I'm like, I know there is more to this verse, 00:09:38.57\00:09:41.24 like from reading it and from hearing about it, 00:09:41.28\00:09:43.88 there is more to this verse. 00:09:43.91\00:09:45.28 Well, you might have been seeing symptoms of people 00:09:45.31\00:09:47.05 trying to restrict your faith, 00:09:47.08\00:09:49.68 they're against your religion and by definition 00:09:49.72\00:09:52.09 they're probably against religious liberty, 00:09:52.12\00:09:54.16 but back to this view of religious liberty 00:09:54.19\00:09:56.86 being sort of an open go for everyone, 00:09:56.89\00:09:59.59 negative and positive views. 00:09:59.63\00:10:02.23 It's like free speech. 00:10:02.26\00:10:04.03 Free speech doesn't exist 00:10:04.07\00:10:05.40 unless you allow uncomfortable speech 00:10:05.43\00:10:09.10 that you don't want. 00:10:09.14\00:10:10.87 Hate speech. Right. 00:10:10.91\00:10:12.27 Well, not hate speech. 00:10:12.31\00:10:13.64 No, a speech that incites to criminality, 00:10:13.68\00:10:15.34 that's another question. 00:10:15.38\00:10:17.41 So on religious liberty we have to allow 00:10:17.45\00:10:19.71 even people opposing our religion. 00:10:19.75\00:10:22.32 We have to allow not just our correct view, 00:10:22.35\00:10:25.15 but somebody else's view, what they think is correct. 00:10:25.19\00:10:28.22 And that's an exciting dynamic. 00:10:28.26\00:10:30.23 And, yes, as a young person online, 00:10:30.26\00:10:32.13 you're seeing this worked out as I say, 00:10:32.16\00:10:34.76 was book burning in another era, 00:10:34.80\00:10:36.83 but now it's online. 00:10:36.87\00:10:38.20 Now it's online stuff that people post. 00:10:38.23\00:10:41.37 I mean, even in my own experiences 00:10:41.40\00:10:44.81 with dealing with people, I've had people tell me, 00:10:44.84\00:10:48.64 "Well, you know, your opinion is not correct, 00:10:48.68\00:10:52.51 I mean, I believe this, 00:10:52.55\00:10:55.35 and I don't believe your opinion is right." 00:10:55.38\00:10:56.99 I mean, I had a conversation with a young man around my age. 00:10:57.02\00:11:01.02 He was... 00:11:01.06\00:11:02.39 I believe he told me he was an atheist. 00:11:02.42\00:11:03.89 And he tells me, 00:11:03.93\00:11:05.26 "I don't believe that there is God of yours exists." 00:11:05.29\00:11:07.20 And I was like, 00:11:07.23\00:11:08.56 "Well, you want me to help you believe?" 00:11:08.60\00:11:11.13 And he said, "I don't want your help, 00:11:11.17\00:11:13.57 I just want to believe what I want to believe." 00:11:13.60\00:11:15.60 And I was like, "Well, that's your right." 00:11:15.64\00:11:19.87 It's very interesting that at this point of history 00:11:19.91\00:11:24.28 when human survival itself is at risk, at least, 00:11:24.31\00:11:29.28 I think that Pope of Rome has come to that conclusion 00:11:29.32\00:11:31.89 in his document Laudato si. 00:11:31.92\00:11:34.29 He says, "The only salvation of survival of mankind 00:11:34.32\00:11:38.53 is to protect the earth before it destroys all of us." 00:11:38.56\00:11:41.86 Our lack of custody 00:11:41.90\00:11:43.47 and our depletion of natural resources meant 00:11:43.50\00:11:45.87 that our survival is at stake. 00:11:45.90\00:11:48.44 So we're going back to first things 00:11:48.47\00:11:51.04 because in that document, he decides to create a God, 00:11:51.07\00:11:54.84 the creation of the seventh day Sabbath, 00:11:54.88\00:11:57.05 and the need to return to that first thing. 00:11:57.08\00:12:01.75 Similarly, the first thing of God's message to man 00:12:01.78\00:12:05.75 through Jesus Christ was religious freedom, 00:12:05.79\00:12:08.92 the liberation from the destroying 00:12:08.96\00:12:12.53 stultifying power of sin 00:12:12.56\00:12:14.46 that is indeed the message of religious liberty, 00:12:14.50\00:12:18.80 a first thing message. 00:12:18.83\00:12:21.80 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:12:21.84\00:12:24.77
