Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:05.50\00:00:07.17 Before the break with guest Ed Woods III, 00:00:07.20\00:00:10.61 we were in The Great Controversy. 00:00:10.64\00:00:12.41 Not between you and I, 00:00:12.44\00:00:13.78 a little argument is good sometimes 00:00:13.81\00:00:15.44 and I've differed from a few guests. 00:00:15.48\00:00:18.88 But I think we're in pretty much agreement 00:00:18.91\00:00:20.48 about The Great Controversy theme 00:00:20.52\00:00:22.88 is derived from the Bible 00:00:22.92\00:00:24.25 and that we're living through it. 00:00:24.29\00:00:25.62 Through it. 00:00:25.65\00:00:26.99 And I can say as the war, as we talk about the mind, 00:00:27.02\00:00:29.12 we talked about faith, 00:00:29.16\00:00:30.53 but also talked about war worship. 00:00:30.56\00:00:32.73 And one of the things that's come out 00:00:32.76\00:00:34.30 of the Colin Kaepernick, 00:00:34.33\00:00:35.66 you know, incident in the NFL 00:00:35.70\00:00:37.63 with regards to taking a knee, you know, he took a knee, 00:00:37.67\00:00:40.57 and he said, "The reason why I was taken a knee 00:00:40.60\00:00:42.84 was in response or as a protest 00:00:42.87\00:00:47.58 to the abuse of minorities at the hand of police." 00:00:47.61\00:00:50.98 And now that's what he took a knee for. 00:00:51.01\00:00:53.18 But then it became a patriotism issue, 00:00:53.21\00:00:56.22 it became disrespect of the military issue, 00:00:56.25\00:00:58.92 but that was not the purpose of him taking a knee. 00:00:58.95\00:01:03.63 And, I mean, he might not be the best speaker, 00:01:03.66\00:01:05.73 the best messenger, but he clearly articulated, 00:01:05.76\00:01:09.00 "I am taking a knee as a response 00:01:09.03\00:01:12.60 to the systematic abuse of minority and..." 00:01:12.63\00:01:16.17 And that was a reasonable attitude stuff. 00:01:16.20\00:01:17.54 And I didn't find it anywhere, 00:01:17.57\00:01:19.44 I mean, I didn't find it offensive at all. 00:01:19.47\00:01:20.88 What I can remember people found offensive way back 00:01:20.91\00:01:24.08 in the '70s, you know, the fist. 00:01:24.11\00:01:25.88 Well, the fist, that was at the Olympics. 00:01:25.91\00:01:27.45 Yeah. 00:01:27.48\00:01:28.82 I think that could have been seen as more in your face 00:01:28.85\00:01:31.42 and even an aggression, I mean, they had a good cause. 00:01:31.45\00:01:34.26 It was the black power, you know, the secular right. 00:01:34.29\00:01:36.49 But this I thought from what... 00:01:36.52\00:01:37.89 I don't follow football as close as I should 00:01:37.93\00:01:40.63 or as some do 00:01:40.66\00:01:42.16 but it seemed a fairly passive thing. 00:01:42.20\00:01:44.17 But of course, even the president 00:01:44.20\00:01:45.73 elevated this to a new level 00:01:45.77\00:01:49.07 and then the patriotism kicked in 00:01:49.10\00:01:50.94 and all I thought of on this patriotism... 00:01:50.97\00:01:52.57 I can remember Scalia 00:01:52.61\00:01:54.14 who had many constitutional sins 00:01:54.18\00:01:57.65 from those of us on a true religious liberty level. 00:01:57.68\00:02:01.68 You know, he was never mind. 00:02:01.72\00:02:03.05 But he said and I remember hearing him in person, 00:02:03.08\00:02:05.65 he defended vigorously the right, 00:02:05.69\00:02:07.72 say to burn the flag. 00:02:07.76\00:02:09.96 Right, and he said even his own wife pillow fighting 00:02:09.99\00:02:12.43 when he came home after leading in the decision 00:02:12.46\00:02:15.43 of the Supreme Court that upheld the right to do that. 00:02:15.46\00:02:17.33 We need to recognize that that doesn't automatically 00:02:17.37\00:02:20.67 even not to put your hand over your heart 00:02:20.70\00:02:23.47 during the national anthem... 00:02:23.51\00:02:25.14 We're not in the Nazi era where if you got 00:02:25.17\00:02:27.58 the slightest flinching of loyalty to the fear 00:02:27.61\00:02:29.88 or whatever you're taken off to the camp, 00:02:29.91\00:02:32.75 there's different ways that defines citizenship. 00:02:32.78\00:02:35.62 With regards to the black power side, 00:02:35.65\00:02:38.65 you'd have to understand... 00:02:38.69\00:02:40.02 I thought I might stir it. 00:02:40.06\00:02:41.39 You got to stir with everything, 00:02:41.42\00:02:42.76 that would makes me very clear 00:02:42.79\00:02:44.13 the effects of systematic racism 00:02:44.16\00:02:47.36 and the degrading of blacks 00:02:47.40\00:02:49.86 and just reduce us to nothing or to make us feel... 00:02:49.90\00:02:52.80 No, no, no, my point was that act was meant to be, 00:02:52.83\00:02:57.17 it was far more confrontational act. 00:02:57.21\00:03:00.88 This taking the knee, I think is passive statement. 00:03:00.91\00:03:04.31 It's a passive statement, that's respectful, 00:03:04.35\00:03:05.98 but also the black power was also a motivation. 00:03:06.01\00:03:09.85 You know, here we can win medals to represent our country 00:03:09.88\00:03:14.19 but we can't get fair treatment at all. 00:03:14.22\00:03:16.42 Yeah, I understand and I lived in Washington 00:03:16.46\00:03:19.13 when it burned in 1960 00:03:19.16\00:03:20.66 and I know what we've been through. 00:03:20.70\00:03:22.10 And I also still watch and it just blows my mind, 00:03:22.13\00:03:26.27 newsreel footage showing 00:03:26.30\00:03:27.84 of Jesse Owens winning in the Olympics. 00:03:27.87\00:03:29.70 '36. And we say... 00:03:29.74\00:03:31.07 "All this showed the..." 00:03:31.11\00:03:32.94 They make statements up, 00:03:32.97\00:03:34.31 you know we went through it at that time. 00:03:34.34\00:03:36.11 Blacks couldn't serve in the US military, 00:03:36.14\00:03:38.01 civil rights, 00:03:38.05\00:03:40.65 so we've been through hell and back on this issue. 00:03:40.68\00:03:42.82 But that what makes me cleared up 00:03:42.85\00:03:44.79 because I mean, that's just something that's important 00:03:44.82\00:03:47.46 but if you look at the Kerner Commission, 00:03:47.49\00:03:49.02 I'm not going to go into it, 00:03:49.06\00:03:50.39 but Google the Kerner Commission 00:03:50.43\00:03:52.19 and the same five findings 00:03:52.23\00:03:54.96 that we found in the Kerner Commission 00:03:55.00\00:03:56.90 after the riots of Detroit, 00:03:56.93\00:03:58.27 what happened in New Jersey in 1967. 00:03:58.30\00:04:01.47 Let's look 50 years later in 2017, 00:04:01.50\00:04:05.57 I guarantee you after you look at the Kerner Commission, 00:04:05.61\00:04:08.31 the question is what progress have we made? 00:04:08.34\00:04:12.01 And then two, what difference has the church made? 00:04:12.05\00:04:16.08 Fifty year, it's the same five things. 00:04:16.12\00:04:17.89 One of them had to deal with segregated housing, 00:04:17.92\00:04:19.75 same issue in 2017, same issue. 00:04:19.79\00:04:22.82 We'll go back to Kaepernick 00:04:22.86\00:04:24.19 just so we could go in there too. 00:04:24.23\00:04:25.56 Well, you know, for us, you and me, it's a long time, 00:04:25.59\00:04:26.96 but in the sweep of history, 00:04:27.00\00:04:28.33 it's really just a couple of blinks 00:04:28.36\00:04:29.80 and it'll take a long time. 00:04:29.83\00:04:32.37 Even if the US has good intention, 00:04:32.40\00:04:35.14 the society has an incredible crippling 00:04:35.17\00:04:38.21 of the year before the Civil War 00:04:38.24\00:04:40.58 and even Reconstruction. 00:04:40.61\00:04:41.98 And I think there's some progress made 00:04:42.01\00:04:43.95 but it's by no means over. 00:04:43.98\00:04:46.72 Why do you think I just think of... 00:04:46.75\00:04:48.08 I think of Winston Churchill. 00:04:48.12\00:04:49.45 You know, we haven't yet begun to fight with, 00:04:49.48\00:04:50.82 what was that we have... 00:04:50.85\00:04:52.95 Wish I could remember, but, you know, 00:04:52.99\00:04:54.32 we've just barely aroused our self. 00:04:54.36\00:04:55.72 This is not the beginning of the end. 00:04:55.76\00:04:57.86 "And this is not the end. 00:04:57.89\00:04:59.23 It's not even the beginning of the end." 00:04:59.26\00:05:00.96 But it's the challenge, I mean, we've made this progress 00:05:01.00\00:05:02.96 for the voting rights to civil rights. 00:05:03.00\00:05:04.43 Now we have this Kerner Commission, 00:05:04.47\00:05:05.80 50 years where we are. 00:05:05.83\00:05:07.67 And then, you know, Dr. King's vision here, 00:05:07.70\00:05:09.64 he was doing award economic income inequality 00:05:09.67\00:05:12.94 for everybody was looking at Appalachian, 00:05:12.97\00:05:15.11 he was looking at the Latinos. 00:05:15.14\00:05:16.61 You're right, it's been forgotten 00:05:16.64\00:05:18.18 that his vision was very broad. 00:05:18.21\00:05:19.55 Broad, you know, not just the Vietnam War 00:05:19.58\00:05:21.72 but going back to Kaep, you know, 00:05:21.75\00:05:23.18 what really comes out is the symbol of the flag 00:05:23.22\00:05:27.09 and how we are worshipping the flag 00:05:27.12\00:05:30.13 and this whole patriotism 00:05:30.16\00:05:32.29 and this whole thing associated with the flag. 00:05:32.33\00:05:34.53 I mean, people say the Star-Spangled Banner, 00:05:34.56\00:05:36.93 but does anybody actually read the third verse 00:05:36.97\00:05:39.50 where it talks about the hireling and slave. 00:05:39.53\00:05:41.60 Does anybody actually read and talk about 00:05:41.64\00:05:43.91 what it really means. 00:05:43.94\00:05:46.07 You know, I mean, we demonize Kaepernick 00:05:46.11\00:05:48.34 and we add all these other elements 00:05:48.38\00:05:50.28 but these other elements 00:05:50.31\00:05:51.65 was not what Kaepernick was protesting for. 00:05:51.68\00:05:54.22 And now we have this big controversy 00:05:54.25\00:05:57.02 which has nothing to do with, 00:05:57.05\00:05:59.42 like you said, a non-aggressive but a peaceful protests 00:05:59.45\00:06:03.59 by taking the knee to the national... 00:06:03.63\00:06:06.29 No, no military was disrespected, 00:06:06.33\00:06:08.16 nobody was told that their sacrifice was at vain 00:06:08.20\00:06:10.97 in terms of a parent. 00:06:11.00\00:06:12.33 I mean, even Pat Tillman who died playing, 00:06:12.37\00:06:14.77 who was playing for the Arizona Cardinals 00:06:14.80\00:06:16.57 who died in the war. 00:06:16.60\00:06:18.94 His widow came out and said, "My husband died 00:06:18.97\00:06:21.54 for your right to free speech and your right to protest." 00:06:21.58\00:06:24.61 And so this whole symbol of the flag is very dangerous. 00:06:24.65\00:06:28.22 Not the action but the reactions reveal some, 00:06:28.25\00:06:32.92 actually, very polarizing dangerous tendencies, I think. 00:06:32.95\00:06:37.96 Where it will go I don't know. But it's interesting... 00:06:37.99\00:06:39.86 How we switch the narrative to something that's not true. 00:06:39.89\00:06:44.13 And now we have this tension, this conflict, 00:06:44.17\00:06:47.47 that has nothing to do 00:06:47.50\00:06:49.27 with the original intent of the protests, 00:06:49.30\00:06:52.07 which is well documented with Laquan McDonald, 00:06:52.11\00:06:55.21 Mike Brown, Tamir Rice, Freddie Gray, 00:06:55.24\00:06:58.25 and the names Philando Castile 00:06:58.28\00:07:00.05 and the names go on and on and on. 00:07:00.08\00:07:01.98 And that's just from a race, 00:07:02.02\00:07:03.52 we still haven't dealt with classism, 00:07:03.55\00:07:05.12 we still haven't dealt with gender. 00:07:05.15\00:07:07.36 But we spoke in another program I think about 00:07:07.39\00:07:09.36 how our modern society 00:07:09.39\00:07:11.13 is being manipulated on that stead. 00:07:11.16\00:07:14.20 And there isn't a gender 00:07:14.23\00:07:15.56 and this protest was for a given purpose 00:07:15.60\00:07:19.80 but I can see it already being steered 00:07:19.83\00:07:21.70 for a larger agenda of different forces. 00:07:21.74\00:07:24.31 I mean, the thing is we don't know what it is. 00:07:24.34\00:07:26.44 Is it a smokescreen for the Russian meddling, 00:07:26.47\00:07:28.91 I mean, what's happening there. 00:07:28.94\00:07:30.68 But I can tell already it's been moved on purpose 00:07:30.71\00:07:34.42 and I'm afraid there's some that have a vested interest 00:07:34.45\00:07:37.75 in creating class conflict and a sense of peril. 00:07:37.79\00:07:43.22 And where that will end probably not good. 00:07:43.26\00:07:46.46 Well, I don't know, I mean. 00:07:46.49\00:07:47.83 I think we're headed for the lockdown. 00:07:47.86\00:07:49.20 And for religious liberty, we want anything 00:07:49.23\00:07:52.37 but the lockdown that flourishes on open views, 00:07:52.40\00:07:55.80 open expressions, 00:07:55.84\00:07:57.17 Reformation was a wild and messy event 00:07:57.21\00:08:00.21 that in a way resulted in the 30 years war 00:08:00.24\00:08:02.68 which was bad. 00:08:02.71\00:08:04.05 But yet, it also resulted in the modern world order we have, 00:08:04.08\00:08:07.48 sovereign countries, and free speech, 00:08:07.52\00:08:09.15 and all the rest, 00:08:09.18\00:08:10.95 this would be a horrible world but for the Reformation. 00:08:10.99\00:08:14.19 And we really need to be careful 00:08:14.22\00:08:16.42 that our continuing openness 00:08:16.46\00:08:19.39 that's characterized the bit of the 19th, 00:08:19.43\00:08:22.40 most of the 20th century, 00:08:22.43\00:08:24.07 I think we are on lockdown stage. 00:08:24.10\00:08:27.70 And we have to keep talking freedom 00:08:27.74\00:08:31.47 in a secular sense but it derives, 00:08:31.51\00:08:33.98 as even Jefferson said, not wanting to say God, the God 00:08:34.01\00:08:37.08 but, you know, nature is God. 00:08:37.11\00:08:38.75 It derives from a divine source. 00:08:38.78\00:08:40.85 Absolutely. 00:08:40.88\00:08:42.22 Otherwise, it comes with the seasons, 00:08:42.25\00:08:43.99 leaves with the seasons. 00:08:44.02\00:08:45.35 This is just something that's been granted 00:08:45.39\00:08:46.72 by those in power. 00:08:46.76\00:08:48.09 But that's why our 00:08:48.12\00:08:49.46 Public Affairs Religious Liberty 00:08:49.49\00:08:50.83 needs to be transformed from a service to a ministry... 00:08:50.86\00:08:53.66 Absolutely. Because of the evangelistic... 00:08:53.70\00:08:55.26 I like that, from a service to a ministry. 00:08:55.30\00:08:57.63 Because of the evangelistic component 00:08:57.67\00:08:59.67 in seeing what's happening in today's world. 00:08:59.70\00:09:01.60 And the Great Controversy is for Adventist everything. 00:09:01.64\00:09:05.01 It's everything. To explain this. 00:09:05.04\00:09:06.37 And we need to really take a look at that. 00:09:06.41\00:09:08.64 But the question, this whole thing with the flag 00:09:08.68\00:09:10.75 is this whole thing about symbols. 00:09:10.78\00:09:13.15 And I say, don't let your symbols 00:09:13.18\00:09:16.12 rob you off your principles. 00:09:16.15\00:09:18.35 And we're up here worshiping these symbols 00:09:18.39\00:09:20.92 as if they have something to do with freedom, 00:09:20.96\00:09:23.22 I mean, this whole, I mean, America has ideals, 00:09:23.26\00:09:27.03 but America is not living up to its ideals. 00:09:27.06\00:09:29.36 Its America's ideals, 00:09:29.40\00:09:31.00 the flag might have a good place in it 00:09:31.03\00:09:32.53 but we're not flag worshippers, 00:09:32.57\00:09:34.34 it should be the ideal worshippers. 00:09:34.37\00:09:36.04 And we need to make sure... Of a free... 00:09:36.07\00:09:38.81 We're running out of time. 00:09:38.84\00:09:40.34 But, you know, I have a thing about the flag 00:09:40.38\00:09:42.98 and it still troubles me 00:09:43.01\00:09:45.05 to some degree to go into a church 00:09:45.08\00:09:46.82 and to see the national flag and perhaps the church 00:09:46.85\00:09:50.02 or a Pathfinder flag flying up on the stage. 00:09:50.05\00:09:53.19 The state is worthy of loyalty in the civil sense 00:09:53.22\00:09:56.62 but inside the church, God is preeminent. 00:09:56.66\00:09:59.29 Amen. 00:09:59.33\00:10:00.66 And the flag is the symbol of the State, 00:10:00.70\00:10:02.33 you don't plant it behind the altar. 00:10:02.36\00:10:05.13 People haven't really thought of the dynamic of this. 00:10:05.17\00:10:08.84 You know, on a church, at least in our church 00:10:08.87\00:10:11.01 and I think most churches, when you build it, 00:10:11.04\00:10:12.71 it's finished, you dedicate it to God. 00:10:12.74\00:10:15.48 And in the medieval era, they understood 00:10:15.51\00:10:17.68 that's not State territory, that's heavenly territory. 00:10:17.71\00:10:20.38 Absolutely. And you don't mix the two. 00:10:20.42\00:10:22.85 Well, the third angel's message is very clear, 00:10:22.88\00:10:25.19 "Fear God and give Him glory 00:10:25.22\00:10:27.62 because the hour of judgment has come. 00:10:27.66\00:10:29.66 Worship Him who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, 00:10:29.69\00:10:32.53 and springs of water." 00:10:32.56\00:10:34.03 When we think about 00:10:34.06\00:10:35.40 the Public Affairs Religious Liberty ministry 00:10:35.43\00:10:37.23 and the impact that it can have 00:10:37.27\00:10:39.27 in hastening the soon Second Coming of Christ, 00:10:39.30\00:10:41.60 let's not get caught up in the symbols of flags 00:10:41.64\00:10:44.31 or even the symbol of the Sabbath. 00:10:44.34\00:10:46.27 We worship Him, 00:10:46.31\00:10:47.64 the one who has created the Sabbath, 00:10:47.68\00:10:49.11 the one who has redeemed us, and has made salvation possible 00:10:49.14\00:10:53.25 so that we can live with Him in eternity. 00:10:53.28\00:10:55.58 And that's what excites me about the Public Affairs 00:10:55.62\00:10:58.92 of Religious Liberty ministry is our worship 00:10:58.95\00:11:01.76 to the King of kings and the Lord of lords, 00:11:01.79\00:11:04.56 He is the great emancipator. 00:11:04.59\00:11:08.73 Almost a 100 years before the American Revolution, 00:11:08.76\00:11:12.67 England had a civil war. 00:11:12.70\00:11:15.24 And almost a 100 years 00:11:15.27\00:11:17.41 before that revolution, John Milton, 00:11:17.44\00:11:20.34 one of the greatest literary figures 00:11:20.38\00:11:22.41 that ever came out of England wrote Paradise Lost 00:11:22.44\00:11:25.61 in its companion Paradise Regained. 00:11:25.65\00:11:28.62 In Paradise Lost, 00:11:28.65\00:11:29.98 he told of the rebellion in heaven 00:11:30.02\00:11:33.42 and using fabulous language and the speech 00:11:33.46\00:11:37.49 that many has accused of putting Satan himself up 00:11:37.53\00:11:41.06 as the hero of the work. 00:11:41.10\00:11:42.96 He had Satan say that he had determined 00:11:43.00\00:11:45.17 to wage unrelenting war against heaven. 00:11:45.20\00:11:50.17 Today, when we talk about religious liberty 00:11:50.21\00:11:52.11 and indeed the state of the world, 00:11:52.14\00:11:54.31 we need to realize what Milton wrote 00:11:54.34\00:11:57.08 was not a literary fantasy. 00:11:57.11\00:11:59.35 It was based on the biblical account 00:11:59.38\00:12:01.78 and what the prophets and seers through the ages have said, 00:12:01.82\00:12:04.89 and most recently for Seventh-day Adventist, 00:12:04.92\00:12:07.09 Ellen White writing in Great Controversy, 00:12:07.12\00:12:09.42 that we are indeed engaged in a great war 00:12:09.46\00:12:12.43 between two forces, the good and the not so good. 00:12:12.46\00:12:16.26 Not always that clear to people 00:12:16.30\00:12:18.33 but the end result is night and day, 00:12:18.37\00:12:20.74 salvation and damnation, liberty, and great oppression. 00:12:20.77\00:12:25.71 And all of us that work for religious liberty know 00:12:25.74\00:12:28.88 that the battle is not easy, it's not a simple matter 00:12:28.91\00:12:31.88 of just protecting religious liberty. 00:12:31.91\00:12:33.82 We have to advance against incredibly negative forces 00:12:33.85\00:12:37.59 and maintain a biblical principle of freedom 00:12:37.62\00:12:40.19 before God. 00:12:40.22\00:12:43.53 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:12:43.56\00:12:47.33
