Welcome back to The Liberty Insider. 00:00:05.07\00:00:07.50 Before the break with my voluble guest. 00:00:07.54\00:00:13.07 Thank you, valuable. 00:00:13.11\00:00:14.44 No, valuable... Okay, okay. 00:00:14.48\00:00:15.84 I'm sorry, if I could make sure I got it. 00:00:15.88\00:00:17.21 I said an optimus. 00:00:17.25\00:00:20.68 Ed Woods III, you know, we really in fine 00:00:20.72\00:00:23.85 form studying about witnessing. 00:00:23.89\00:00:25.49 And we looked at pastors first but all of us can be involved 00:00:25.52\00:00:29.36 in public affairs and religious liberty 00:00:29.39\00:00:31.76 which, this is more focused on our problem 00:00:31.79\00:00:34.33 but it really goes to the gospel commission 00:00:34.36\00:00:35.90 and spreading the gospel... 00:00:35.93\00:00:37.27 Oh, absolutely. 00:00:37.30\00:00:38.63 And relating to your fellow human beings. 00:00:38.67\00:00:40.74 I'm very, my best friends are pastors. 00:00:40.77\00:00:43.24 Dr. Byrd as you know is with a Breath of Life Ministry, 00:00:43.27\00:00:45.87 and another good friend of mine 00:00:45.91\00:00:47.24 who's the godfather of my daughter, 00:00:47.28\00:00:49.18 Pastor Furman Fordham, 00:00:49.21\00:00:50.55 from Riverside Chapel are pastors. 00:00:50.58\00:00:52.85 And where makes it a little bit easier 00:00:52.88\00:00:55.05 for our relationship is that they're very good pastors. 00:00:55.08\00:00:57.82 And I respect it if you can in terms of credibility. 00:00:57.85\00:01:00.86 But pastors set the tone, and the reason 00:01:00.89\00:01:04.39 why I think there's sometimes a disconnect 00:01:04.43\00:01:08.36 where we don't value 00:01:08.40\00:01:09.73 and respect pastors the way that we should. 00:01:09.76\00:01:12.17 And I know some of that is their own doing, 00:01:12.20\00:01:14.17 so let me not excuse that. 00:01:14.20\00:01:16.14 But they do set the tone of leadership, 00:01:16.17\00:01:18.87 you know, in our church. 00:01:18.91\00:01:20.24 I don't expect them to do everything 00:01:20.28\00:01:21.61 nor do I expect them to have the expertise. 00:01:21.64\00:01:24.81 But if they set the tone and go to the meetings 00:01:24.85\00:01:27.32 in providing some enthusiasm, 00:01:27.35\00:01:29.18 you know, just different things it makes a difference. 00:01:29.22\00:01:33.12 I mean, it makes a huge difference. 00:01:33.15\00:01:36.06 Dr. Byrd is about to speak in Charleston, 00:01:36.09\00:01:37.86 you know, where the people died in Charleston, South Carolina. 00:01:37.89\00:01:40.83 You know, Fordham just hosted 00:01:40.86\00:01:43.16 the police response in Riverside 00:01:43.20\00:01:45.80 where they, his church was the designation site. 00:01:45.83\00:01:48.50 And so, Lincoln, this church and the stuff. 00:01:48.54\00:01:51.47 You know, our pastor Marlin Reid 00:01:51.51\00:01:53.27 did a march at Strafford. 00:01:53.31\00:01:54.98 You know, our Pastor Silas Lebrite Coleman 00:01:55.01\00:01:56.78 was a part of praying in the police department. 00:01:56.81\00:02:00.52 So it's those different things where you have the leadership 00:02:00.55\00:02:03.85 in terms of, you know, setting the tone. 00:02:03.89\00:02:05.85 He galvanized the congregation. 00:02:05.89\00:02:07.62 And having said that I do believe our congregation 00:02:07.66\00:02:10.36 need to be more active and not dependent. 00:02:10.39\00:02:12.49 But we got to be galvanized and committed 00:02:12.53\00:02:16.90 because the great gospel commission 00:02:16.93\00:02:18.50 as you so noted wasn't just for the pastor, 00:02:18.53\00:02:20.44 all of us are supposed to go. 00:02:20.47\00:02:22.40 But let's take a little sidetrack on this, 00:02:22.44\00:02:24.61 it's connected too. 00:02:24.64\00:02:25.97 I drove to 3ABN this time. 00:02:26.01\00:02:28.51 Never done it before a long way from Maryland and I 00:02:28.54\00:02:31.91 actually came by via Tennessee, big looping around. 00:02:31.95\00:02:35.08 And way out in the back blocks was it Tennessee 00:02:35.12\00:02:40.22 but anyhow a couple of hundred miles from here 00:02:40.26\00:02:42.26 I see Martin Luther King Boulevard, 00:02:42.29\00:02:45.16 you know, that he is being stamped 00:02:45.19\00:02:47.40 on the American sensibility correctly. 00:02:47.43\00:02:49.56 Right? 00:02:49.60\00:02:50.93 Not just in areas where he had an immediate influence. 00:02:50.97\00:02:53.54 Yeah, but he took a while, you know, Martin Luther King 00:02:53.57\00:02:55.64 is more valued in death 00:02:55.67\00:02:57.37 than because of life in its proper view. 00:02:57.41\00:02:59.27 I mean, it's complicated story. Right. 00:02:59.31\00:03:00.64 But you know there has been 00:03:00.68\00:03:02.11 and there were debates at the time, 00:03:02.14\00:03:04.71 here Martin Luther King a religious leader 00:03:04.75\00:03:08.22 was involved in what many saw as a political adventure. 00:03:08.25\00:03:13.25 He saw it as part of the Gospel Commission, 00:03:13.29\00:03:16.29 and the Christian message, right, 00:03:16.32\00:03:18.66 change this country, big time. 00:03:18.69\00:03:21.76 And yet at the same time, 00:03:21.80\00:03:24.03 I think there's good reasons to reign the church 00:03:24.07\00:03:26.90 and pastors back from becoming 00:03:26.94\00:03:28.97 political instruments and functionaries and so on. 00:03:29.00\00:03:32.41 Where do, you know, how do you know 00:03:32.44\00:03:35.11 where the differences between representing Christ 00:03:35.14\00:03:39.48 to old rules principalities and neighborhoods 00:03:39.51\00:03:45.49 and becoming unduly involved or political? 00:03:45.52\00:03:48.16 Well, I think it really speaks to motive. 00:03:48.19\00:03:50.86 I mean, I am doing my Christian responsibility 00:03:50.89\00:03:55.20 as a disciple of Christ. 00:03:55.23\00:03:56.93 And my motive is to get my five seconds of fame 00:03:56.97\00:04:00.40 or do have my name and highlights 00:04:00.44\00:04:02.14 and stuff like that. 00:04:02.17\00:04:03.51 That's the wrong reason. 00:04:03.54\00:04:05.27 And unfortunately we do have people 00:04:05.31\00:04:07.31 that have these pictures and moments of glory, 00:04:07.34\00:04:10.75 but I mean this mission doesn't just stop 00:04:10.78\00:04:13.78 once the cameras have stopped taking pictures. 00:04:13.82\00:04:16.58 Even when you say that I think of... 00:04:16.62\00:04:18.92 I forget the first name but it invokes the whole thing 00:04:18.95\00:04:21.26 the Brawley, you remember. 00:04:21.29\00:04:22.72 Who's that? 00:04:22.76\00:04:24.96 Tawana Brawley or whatever, remember that incident. 00:04:24.99\00:04:27.50 You have to refresh my memory, please. 00:04:27.53\00:04:29.23 In one of the Rev. Al Sharpton earlier iterations. 00:04:29.26\00:04:33.34 He tried to enter into a scene where there was some, 00:04:33.37\00:04:36.67 I think it was a police action, 00:04:36.71\00:04:38.04 anyhow there was this girl Brawley, he told the story 00:04:38.07\00:04:40.01 which was all fabricated at the time. 00:04:40.04\00:04:42.64 And I think he had what was largely 00:04:42.68\00:04:45.85 a political agenda at that time, 00:04:45.88\00:04:47.55 he's matured a lot since 00:04:47.58\00:04:48.92 and I don't know have the same issue. 00:04:48.95\00:04:50.69 Well, the thing about human needs, 00:04:50.72\00:04:53.36 suffering and rights, 00:04:53.39\00:04:54.92 you know I guess what I'm saying is to me 00:04:54.96\00:04:57.03 is not a political agenda it's a moral agenda. 00:04:57.06\00:05:00.16 And why I say a moral agenda 00:05:00.20\00:05:01.66 is we have moral responsibilities 00:05:01.70\00:05:03.73 as Christians not to just talk about our faith 00:05:03.77\00:05:07.24 but to live our faith. 00:05:07.27\00:05:09.24 And when you see some of these things 00:05:09.27\00:05:11.61 that are transpiring in our communities. 00:05:11.64\00:05:14.18 And the church doesn't have a response, 00:05:14.21\00:05:16.41 I'm talking more than just a statement. 00:05:16.44\00:05:18.55 It seems like there's a indifference. 00:05:18.58\00:05:20.98 Samuel London wrote a book entitled 00:05:21.02\00:05:23.45 Seventh-day Adventists and the Civil Rights Movement. 00:05:23.49\00:05:26.65 And it talked about one of the reasons 00:05:26.69\00:05:28.49 why we're not involved. 00:05:28.52\00:05:30.93 And one of the things that he said 00:05:30.96\00:05:32.56 was he talked about evangelism and we felt our 00:05:32.59\00:05:35.86 primary interest was evangelism, 00:05:35.90\00:05:38.83 but not caring about West African 00:05:38.87\00:05:40.74 as the community. 00:05:40.77\00:05:42.10 And I'm like how in the world can you evangelize someone, 00:05:42.14\00:05:46.37 when you can't even show compassion for them. 00:05:46.41\00:05:49.64 I mean, you're gonna give them a Bible, 00:05:49.68\00:05:51.75 and they can't have, 00:05:51.78\00:05:53.11 they don't have any food in the cupboards, 00:05:53.15\00:05:54.68 you got to give them a Bible 00:05:54.72\00:05:56.45 and they don't know, their lights turn on. 00:05:56.48\00:05:59.09 You're gonna give them the Bible 00:05:59.12\00:06:00.79 and they're under an eviction notice, 00:06:00.82\00:06:03.02 I mean what are we saying 00:06:03.06\00:06:06.63 when we're doing these things where we don't really care, 00:06:06.66\00:06:09.40 I mean obviously it's well documented 00:06:09.43\00:06:11.33 that our church really didn't take a stand 00:06:11.37\00:06:13.23 on the civil rights movement, 00:06:13.27\00:06:15.04 but we had E.E Cleveland and other... 00:06:15.07\00:06:18.07 Well, we were sociologically divided. 00:06:18.11\00:06:22.61 We're still sociologically divided. 00:06:22.64\00:06:26.05 You're being kind, I guess... 00:06:26.08\00:06:27.52 But I know what it was like then... 00:06:27.55\00:06:28.88 And I want to be respectful, 00:06:28.92\00:06:30.32 but we're still sociologically divided. 00:06:30.35\00:06:31.95 We're not pushed, you know we have the saying you know 00:06:31.99\00:06:34.16 if I do this, half the church is gonna be mad, 00:06:34.19\00:06:36.83 and half the church is going to agree with me. 00:06:36.86\00:06:38.73 And I guess what I'm saying is that's true in a democracy, 00:06:38.76\00:06:42.10 but in a theocracy we don't get to vote 00:06:42.13\00:06:44.57 whether or not we're gonna follow God's word. 00:06:44.60\00:06:47.17 And we are under a theocracy, and God's word reign supreme. 00:06:47.20\00:06:51.61 So either we're gonna follow it or not. 00:06:51.64\00:06:53.88 I'm not looking for the populous vote. 00:06:53.91\00:06:56.08 I know there are some people that 00:06:56.11\00:06:57.55 everybody is not going to like... 00:06:57.58\00:06:59.91 Or the approach to public affairs religious liberty. 00:06:59.95\00:07:04.15 But if it's a biblical mandate which I believe it is, 00:07:04.19\00:07:08.82 and I believe that the indwelling power 00:07:08.86\00:07:11.16 of the Holy Spirit is going to make that difference 00:07:11.19\00:07:14.10 not me in and of myself. 00:07:14.13\00:07:16.30 I think we can transform the community 00:07:16.33\00:07:19.53 and make a difference. 00:07:19.57\00:07:21.37 And this is something that I'm very passionate about 00:07:21.40\00:07:24.37 from a witnessing standpoint 00:07:24.41\00:07:26.07 is because we are not having the impact 00:07:26.11\00:07:29.64 that we need to have and I also think 00:07:29.68\00:07:31.55 just to have latter rain implications as well. 00:07:31.58\00:07:34.48 When you make the general statement 00:07:34.52\00:07:35.85 transforming the community. 00:07:35.88\00:07:37.45 There's elements within that on the simplest level 00:07:37.49\00:07:41.32 which Christians do, and our church is involved 00:07:41.36\00:07:44.49 and you should give out, you can have soup kitchens 00:07:44.53\00:07:46.26 and give out material aid and help in involvement right. 00:07:46.29\00:07:49.70 But then there's the level that we were really talking about 00:07:49.73\00:07:52.67 with Martin Luther King taking a social initiative 00:07:52.70\00:07:55.17 for justice and so on. 00:07:55.20\00:07:58.21 I don't think one substitutes for the other. 00:07:58.24\00:08:01.08 There's an article coming up in Liberty, 00:08:01.11\00:08:04.61 it's not printed yet. 00:08:04.65\00:08:06.41 But it gives the example from the Vietnam War of a... 00:08:06.45\00:08:09.95 Happened to be a Roman Catholic but a Roman Catholic cardinal, 00:08:09.98\00:08:14.09 blessing and sprinkling holy water on the be B52's 00:08:14.12\00:08:16.93 as they headed off to bombing. 00:08:16.96\00:08:18.29 To me that's a wrong involvement of the church. 00:08:18.33\00:08:21.30 Absolutely. 00:08:21.33\00:08:23.00 And how about in the antiwar movement, 00:08:23.03\00:08:25.00 because it's not just war and peace, 00:08:25.03\00:08:26.50 but there's a counterpoint to that, 00:08:26.53\00:08:28.77 was it appropriate for there were many ministers 00:08:28.80\00:08:32.27 of different religions at the time 00:08:32.31\00:08:33.78 during the Vietnam War. 00:08:33.81\00:08:35.14 I remember them marching in those protests 00:08:35.18\00:08:37.51 against injustice and bloodshed and all the rest. 00:08:37.55\00:08:41.45 I feel comfortable with that, 00:08:41.48\00:08:42.82 I think we should bring it to the fold, 00:08:42.85\00:08:45.45 we shouldn't just sit back and think, 00:08:45.49\00:08:46.82 "Well, it's not my business, 00:08:46.86\00:08:48.19 it's going to hell in a handbasket anyway." 00:08:48.22\00:08:50.43 I think the antiwar movement is one we can be involved 00:08:50.46\00:08:52.96 with against violence in communities, 00:08:52.99\00:08:56.13 the injustices that are being perpetrated. 00:08:56.16\00:08:58.20 I do think we need to be involved in it, 00:08:58.23\00:09:00.07 that's not our main game. 00:09:00.10\00:09:02.17 You know, Muhammad Ali is a true consciences of that. 00:09:02.20\00:09:05.31 Oh, yeah. In terms of that he was... 00:09:05.34\00:09:07.64 I mean look at how he was treated. 00:09:07.68\00:09:09.11 You know for doing that look what he lost. 00:09:09.14\00:09:11.71 But he never wavered or regret what he has done, 00:09:11.75\00:09:15.55 and the thing is we as a church need to stop 00:09:15.58\00:09:18.65 being so populous minded, 00:09:18.69\00:09:20.76 that we forget our moral responsibility. 00:09:20.79\00:09:23.59 And if we would do that and not just come out 00:09:23.63\00:09:26.53 when it's victims, you know everybody wants to have victims 00:09:26.56\00:09:29.23 but nobody wants to be 00:09:29.26\00:09:30.60 for the marginalized and the oppressed. 00:09:30.63\00:09:32.83 I think we can make a difference. 00:09:32.87\00:09:34.87 And I think people need to see that, 00:09:34.90\00:09:37.71 because now if you look at it people are now looking 00:09:37.74\00:09:40.84 and shopping for churches. 00:09:40.88\00:09:44.28 That's not all good but there's certainly 00:09:44.31\00:09:46.25 an opportunity people have a great need, 00:09:46.28\00:09:48.82 and they're not tied to their old loyalties 00:09:48.85\00:09:51.19 or indifference even, the spiritual hunger. 00:09:51.22\00:09:54.56 And even just care, I mean... But we have to give them... 00:09:54.59\00:09:56.62 Something beyond a good time in the pews. 00:09:56.66\00:09:58.89 Absolutely, they want to see how you're making a difference 00:09:58.93\00:10:01.66 in the community and representing Christ. 00:10:01.70\00:10:03.90 And I've studied a lot of these mega churches 00:10:03.93\00:10:06.03 as well as within our own church 00:10:06.07\00:10:07.50 we had a phenomenon it's not quite over 00:10:07.54\00:10:09.80 but it peaked while back of the celebration churches. 00:10:09.84\00:10:12.91 And they all had very active social programs, 00:10:12.94\00:10:15.94 a lot of member involvement. 00:10:15.98\00:10:17.61 Both things within the church 00:10:17.65\00:10:19.58 but often moving out into the greater community. 00:10:19.61\00:10:22.38 I mean, they did, the American city church 00:10:22.42\00:10:24.22 I saw a clip 00:10:24.25\00:10:25.69 where they did a baby shower for the whole community. 00:10:25.72\00:10:28.29 And they put stuff in Claudia Allen, 00:10:28.32\00:10:30.69 who's one of our phenomenal speakers was leading it 00:10:30.73\00:10:34.20 and she's from Lake Region, she's out there in Baltimore. 00:10:34.23\00:10:37.57 And they showed how they were just doing this 00:10:37.60\00:10:39.07 big community baby shower. 00:10:39.10\00:10:41.17 Just helping people in need, they didn't ask 00:10:41.20\00:10:44.41 who the daddy was or anything like that. 00:10:44.44\00:10:46.98 It was an oblique way to face a very real social problem. 00:10:47.01\00:10:49.91 A situation. You know how can we do that? 00:10:49.94\00:10:51.28 And there would probably be lead-ins 00:10:51.31\00:10:53.58 that they could make to link more actively 00:10:53.62\00:10:55.62 with the community. 00:10:55.65\00:10:57.15 Public affairs, religious liberty 00:10:57.19\00:10:58.65 and witnessing. 00:10:58.69\00:11:00.29 Witnessing is something that we do as individuals 00:11:00.32\00:11:02.79 not on a collective basis, 00:11:02.82\00:11:04.29 and we as to make a conscientious choice 00:11:04.33\00:11:06.70 whether and how we reflect the love of Christ 00:11:06.73\00:11:09.00 in our community. 00:11:09.03\00:11:11.00 That also responds to the marginalized people 00:11:11.03\00:11:14.04 whether they might be prostitutes 00:11:14.07\00:11:16.27 or whether they might be people that we love in our family. 00:11:16.30\00:11:19.84 Immigrant crisis is something when it comes to witnessing 00:11:19.87\00:11:22.24 in terms of how we treat our immigrants 00:11:22.28\00:11:24.28 and how the Lord has required us to remember 00:11:24.31\00:11:26.15 that we were immigrants in Egypt. 00:11:26.18\00:11:27.65 So how do we treat those that might be undocumented 00:11:27.68\00:11:30.52 here in the United States of America. 00:11:30.55\00:11:32.55 I encourage you then if you want 00:11:32.59\00:11:33.92 to make a difference in your public affairs 00:11:33.96\00:11:35.69 and religious liberty ministry, 00:11:35.72\00:11:37.49 you won't just talk about it, but you'll act 00:11:37.53\00:11:40.43 and that action will speak louder than words. 00:11:40.46\00:11:42.86 Because reflecting the love of Christ 00:11:42.90\00:11:44.60 not only inside the walls of the church, 00:11:44.63\00:11:47.20 but outside the walls of the church. 00:11:47.24\00:11:49.50 Thank you. 00:11:49.54\00:11:51.57 One of the most moving moments of my life 00:11:51.61\00:11:53.94 was coming back from a trip on the east coast 00:11:53.98\00:11:56.18 toward Salt Lake City, Utah. 00:11:56.21\00:11:58.48 Finding out that I was on the same plane 00:11:58.51\00:12:00.28 as the Brigham University singers 00:12:00.32\00:12:02.68 sitting next to the choir director 00:12:02.72\00:12:04.35 and finding out that they were returning 00:12:04.39\00:12:05.72 from three weeks in the Middle East. 00:12:05.75\00:12:08.69 As we came down close to their golden city, 00:12:08.72\00:12:12.33 their promised land, 00:12:12.36\00:12:13.70 spontaneously the young people leapt to their feet, 00:12:13.73\00:12:16.00 and started singing 00:12:16.03\00:12:17.37 "I'm going to be a witness for my Lord." 00:12:17.40\00:12:20.00 I don't share their particular faith 00:12:20.04\00:12:22.40 but what I do share is this conviction 00:12:22.44\00:12:24.77 that we are to be witnesses 00:12:24.81\00:12:27.14 when we deal with religious liberty, 00:12:27.18\00:12:28.54 we're witnessing for many individual faiths. 00:12:28.58\00:12:31.41 And me as a Seventh-day Adventist Christian, 00:12:31.45\00:12:33.72 I am obligated to witness to all and sundry. 00:12:33.75\00:12:38.79 As the Bible says of what He has done for me, 00:12:38.82\00:12:41.36 and what He can do for you. 00:12:41.39\00:12:42.86 With that sort of dynamic, 00:12:42.89\00:12:45.06 religious liberty will be alive and valid. 00:12:45.09\00:12:49.43 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:12:49.46\00:12:52.77
