Welcome back to the Liberty Insider 00:00:05.07\00:00:07.14 with guest Elder Ted Wilson, 00:00:07.17\00:00:09.60 President of the Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:00:09.64\00:00:11.97 I really appreciated your closing comment 00:00:12.01\00:00:14.68 there about the incredible value 00:00:14.71\00:00:17.55 and privilege to be occupied with religious liberty 00:00:17.58\00:00:19.95 while we can before things, even perhaps, 00:00:19.98\00:00:22.72 in the liberal West closes in. 00:00:22.75\00:00:26.39 The Seventh-day Adventist church headquarters 00:00:26.42\00:00:27.79 is based in the United States. 00:00:27.82\00:00:29.72 It's not a US church, 00:00:29.76\00:00:31.79 but looking out from this point, 00:00:31.83\00:00:34.36 what do you say and say in the last year, 00:00:34.40\00:00:36.40 in the last few months, 00:00:36.43\00:00:37.87 is a rosy picture for religious liberty 00:00:37.90\00:00:40.64 or there are some storm clouds? 00:00:40.67\00:00:43.57 What's your personal judgment? 00:00:43.61\00:00:44.94 Obviously, nobody can speak 00:00:44.97\00:00:46.84 for the whole of Seventh-day Adventist church 00:00:46.88\00:00:48.64 in that sense, but what do you see? 00:00:48.68\00:00:51.45 Well, as we view the entire world's situation, 00:00:51.48\00:00:55.82 of course, the last two, three years especially, 00:00:55.85\00:00:59.65 we have seen an intense effort 00:00:59.69\00:01:03.12 to limit freedom in different places 00:01:03.16\00:01:06.06 by oppression, by warfare, 00:01:06.09\00:01:09.43 by many other types of, 00:01:09.46\00:01:12.67 oppressing types of many... 00:01:12.70\00:01:14.54 And religion's nearly always the key in this... 00:01:14.57\00:01:16.44 And religion is, plays a huge factor in this, 00:01:16.47\00:01:19.37 or people's at least, people's background in that, 00:01:19.41\00:01:21.81 and the cultural identities 00:01:21.84\00:01:23.18 They fight for identity in Israel. 00:01:23.21\00:01:24.55 And, of course, 00:01:24.58\00:01:25.91 that puts everybody at an uneasy setting, 00:01:25.95\00:01:30.82 and people are really kind of unsure 00:01:30.85\00:01:34.09 as to what's going to happen. 00:01:34.12\00:01:35.66 When that kind of thing happens, 00:01:35.69\00:01:37.73 then, of course, national governments attempt 00:01:37.76\00:01:40.66 to reassure people, 00:01:40.70\00:01:42.20 they try to implement certain kinds of laws 00:01:42.23\00:01:45.83 and measures that will protect people. 00:01:45.87\00:01:48.67 And unfortunately, in those situations, 00:01:48.70\00:01:51.51 people are then willing to give up certain aspects 00:01:51.54\00:01:55.34 of their personal liberty and freedom 00:01:55.38\00:01:57.65 which they have enjoyed in order to have 00:01:57.68\00:01:59.81 that overarching presence of supposed security. 00:01:59.85\00:02:05.62 And unfortunately, 00:02:05.65\00:02:07.86 I see that's drifting very rapidly 00:02:07.89\00:02:11.79 not only in the United States but in many other places, 00:02:11.83\00:02:15.43 towards a herd mentality where, 00:02:15.46\00:02:19.20 people are gonna ask politicians, 00:02:19.23\00:02:21.84 and national leaders, civic leaders, 00:02:21.87\00:02:24.01 "Protect us, take care of us. 00:02:24.04\00:02:25.61 And even if you take away some liberties, 00:02:25.64\00:02:27.54 that's not a real problem 00:02:27.58\00:02:28.91 because we want to be in security." 00:02:28.94\00:02:31.45 And I'm afraid that this kind of instability 00:02:31.48\00:02:34.92 is fostering a lack of understanding 00:02:34.95\00:02:37.99 regarding religious liberty, 00:02:38.02\00:02:39.39 even though sometimes, Lincoln, people are stating, 00:02:39.42\00:02:43.12 we are gonna get these measures in place 00:02:43.16\00:02:45.36 in order to protect your religious liberty. 00:02:45.39\00:02:47.10 It's an irony there, and it does seem to me, 00:02:47.13\00:02:49.46 we're just on the cusp of religion itself 00:02:49.50\00:02:52.57 being invoked as a protection against the other religion. 00:02:52.60\00:02:56.54 And I'm sure you read the news, there's some public talk, 00:02:56.57\00:02:59.64 I hope it's just talk about perhaps, 00:02:59.67\00:03:02.14 detaining groups, 00:03:02.18\00:03:04.61 they're defined from a religious point of view 00:03:04.65\00:03:06.28 and that just sets my teeth on it. 00:03:06.31\00:03:08.95 That's the wrong way to do with it, isn't it? 00:03:08.98\00:03:11.35 No, we need to respect the rights of everyone 00:03:11.39\00:03:15.42 and to respect the religious rights of everyone, 00:03:15.46\00:03:20.66 unless those religious rights 00:03:20.70\00:03:22.43 are involving some type of terrible warfare 00:03:22.46\00:03:26.03 against people... 00:03:26.07\00:03:27.40 Civil wars take care of that. 00:03:27.44\00:03:28.77 Exactly. 00:03:28.80\00:03:30.14 So the respect of a person 00:03:30.17\00:03:32.37 and their religious convictions is at the very foundation 00:03:32.41\00:03:36.01 of the constitution of the United States 00:03:36.04\00:03:39.75 and of many other national governments. 00:03:39.78\00:03:42.45 In some places, of course, 00:03:42.48\00:03:43.82 there's no liberty for religious freedom 00:03:43.85\00:03:47.36 in terms of certain countries of the world. 00:03:47.39\00:03:49.59 But most countries have at least 00:03:49.62\00:03:51.96 some window-dressing that they might say, 00:03:51.99\00:03:54.33 "Yes, we provide religious freedom." 00:03:54.36\00:03:56.63 But for a Christian, for a Seventh-day Adventist, 00:03:56.67\00:04:00.30 for those of us who are involved 00:04:00.34\00:04:01.67 in trying to promote 00:04:01.70\00:04:03.04 and nurture this kind of thing in the minds, 00:04:03.07\00:04:05.97 especially of national leaders, of state leaders, 00:04:06.01\00:04:09.81 I think it's important to remember 00:04:09.84\00:04:11.65 that this is part and parcel of Christ's ministry Himself. 00:04:11.68\00:04:15.35 And now when Jesus got up and spoke in the synagogue, 00:04:15.38\00:04:19.79 and He took the scrolls, 00:04:19.82\00:04:22.12 and He read from the book of Isaiah, 00:04:22.16\00:04:24.06 it was actually from Isaiah 61. 00:04:24.09\00:04:25.43 I could see you're ready to read it, 00:04:25.46\00:04:26.80 it's a powerful passage. 00:04:26.83\00:04:28.16 It is. 00:04:28.20\00:04:29.53 And it was the formal list from the gospel camp, 00:04:29.56\00:04:31.27 the formal beginning of His ministry, 00:04:31.30\00:04:33.00 so it characterized it. 00:04:33.03\00:04:34.37 It's found in Luke 4:18-19 where, 00:04:34.40\00:04:39.14 "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, 00:04:39.17\00:04:40.51 He anointed me 00:04:40.54\00:04:41.88 to preach the gospel to the poor 00:04:41.91\00:04:43.38 and heal the broken hearted, 00:04:43.41\00:04:44.91 preach deliverance to the captives, 00:04:44.95\00:04:46.75 recovery of sight to the blind, 00:04:46.78\00:04:48.38 and set at liberty them that are bruised, 00:04:48.42\00:04:53.49 and then to preach the acceptable year 00:04:53.52\00:04:54.86 of the Lord." 00:04:54.89\00:04:56.22 Now that comes directly from Isaiah 61 and in 61:1, 00:04:56.26\00:05:01.36 it actually says, 00:05:01.40\00:05:02.73 "Proclaim liberty to the captives." 00:05:02.76\00:05:05.53 Now that's what Liberty Magazine is all about, 00:05:05.57\00:05:08.17 that's what religious freedom... 00:05:08.20\00:05:09.54 And they're captive to sin, not to the political system. 00:05:09.57\00:05:12.14 All kinds of captivity. 00:05:12.17\00:05:14.18 I mean, captivity to improper physical habits, 00:05:14.21\00:05:17.35 to mental difficulties, to interpersonal challenges, 00:05:17.38\00:05:22.58 to some kind of a block on understanding 00:05:22.62\00:05:26.65 what religious connection means to Christ Himself. 00:05:26.69\00:05:30.13 You know, the devil, 00:05:30.16\00:05:31.76 and I believe that there is a devil, 00:05:31.79\00:05:34.00 I believe he's very active, 00:05:34.03\00:05:35.86 and he is trying to counteract every good thing 00:05:35.90\00:05:38.80 that the Lord is wanting to do. 00:05:38.83\00:05:40.17 So the Lord is wanting to set at liberty 00:05:40.20\00:05:43.67 those who are captives by sin and by Satan. 00:05:43.71\00:05:47.21 And by God's grace, all of us have that privilege. 00:05:47.24\00:05:50.11 We need to be freed, to be set at liberty. 00:05:50.15\00:05:51.98 So Liberty Magazine is not only a wonderful vehicle 00:05:52.01\00:05:55.48 for just alerting State House leaders 00:05:55.52\00:06:00.26 and national leaders about things, 00:06:00.29\00:06:02.39 it's actually a call to all of us 00:06:02.42\00:06:05.13 to be part of helping everyone 00:06:05.16\00:06:08.23 who is a captive and, of course, 00:06:08.26\00:06:10.33 unfortunately, we are as well. 00:06:10.37\00:06:12.40 We're all sinners in need of Jesus Christ 00:06:12.43\00:06:15.97 and the Lord liberates us. 00:06:16.00\00:06:17.77 Yeah, I appreciate you're taking it 00:06:17.81\00:06:19.14 back to basics, it's the gospel. 00:06:19.17\00:06:20.58 Gospel is the message of liberation. 00:06:20.61\00:06:23.75 It's troubled me lately 00:06:23.78\00:06:25.11 that everyone talks about religious liberty, 00:06:25.15\00:06:27.25 nobody is against that. 00:06:27.28\00:06:29.15 You worked for some time in Russia, 00:06:29.18\00:06:31.79 when it was under the Soviet Union, right? 00:06:31.82\00:06:33.62 Or what it was... 00:06:33.66\00:06:34.99 Just after the collapse of... 00:06:35.02\00:06:36.36 Sorry, yes, it was a transition time, 00:06:36.39\00:06:37.79 but, you know, the Soviet Union 00:06:37.83\00:06:39.16 was still an echo there. 00:06:39.19\00:06:40.56 Soviet Union guaranteed religious liberty in writing, 00:06:40.60\00:06:44.03 not in practice. 00:06:44.07\00:06:45.40 Right. 00:06:45.43\00:06:46.77 And today in the US, 00:06:46.80\00:06:48.14 there's much talk of religious liberty. 00:06:48.17\00:06:49.50 And I've come to believe, 00:06:49.54\00:06:50.87 it means different things to different people 00:06:50.91\00:06:52.24 and in our society in the West, 00:06:52.27\00:06:53.61 more and more it means religious privilege, 00:06:53.64\00:06:56.08 entitlement, 00:06:56.11\00:06:57.45 that's not what Jesus was talking about, 00:06:57.48\00:06:58.85 that's not what your church, my church is bounded, 00:06:58.88\00:07:02.32 it's the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:07:02.35\00:07:03.69 began Liberty Magazine, 00:07:03.72\00:07:05.05 even though it's mostly distributed 00:07:05.09\00:07:06.42 to non-Adventists. 00:07:06.45\00:07:08.16 Let me ask you of a ticklish part of it, 00:07:08.19\00:07:11.26 because it goes back to the reformation. 00:07:11.29\00:07:12.83 Martin Luther, 00:07:12.86\00:07:14.20 when he brought out his great truths, 00:07:14.23\00:07:16.40 he was a Catholic priest, 00:07:16.43\00:07:18.03 because Protestantism ended up being a different entity. 00:07:18.07\00:07:20.40 But he was within the Adventists, 00:07:20.44\00:07:23.17 just the Catholic church. 00:07:23.20\00:07:24.81 And the Adventist church, 00:07:24.84\00:07:26.17 like all other churches has its own bubbling, 00:07:26.21\00:07:29.11 cauldron of ideas and people's initiatives 00:07:29.14\00:07:32.48 and I think they need to be heard 00:07:32.51\00:07:33.85 and change the church. 00:07:33.88\00:07:35.22 How do we relate internally to dissent? 00:07:35.25\00:07:38.52 Is it a religious liberty issue, 00:07:38.55\00:07:40.19 'cause I think there's a bit of a fallacy at work here? 00:07:40.22\00:07:43.73 Well, first of all, 00:07:43.76\00:07:45.39 within a Christian community of faith 00:07:45.43\00:07:49.06 and the Seventh-day Adventist church in particular, 00:07:49.10\00:07:51.97 certainly there's an opportunity for people 00:07:52.00\00:07:54.40 to share opinions. 00:07:54.44\00:07:56.50 We don't work lockstep. 00:07:56.54\00:07:59.14 We don't have uniformity in everything, 00:07:59.17\00:08:01.58 but we do strive for unity 00:08:01.61\00:08:03.81 and those principles have to be based 00:08:03.85\00:08:05.48 on the word of God. 00:08:05.51\00:08:06.85 And... 00:08:06.88\00:08:08.22 A shared goal. 00:08:08.25\00:08:09.58 Exactly, and on understanding that God has a purpose 00:08:09.62\00:08:13.02 for this movement, 00:08:13.05\00:08:15.16 I'd like to refer 00:08:15.19\00:08:16.52 to the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:08:16.56\00:08:17.89 is not just a denomination, it is a movement, 00:08:17.93\00:08:20.46 an Advent movement, 00:08:20.50\00:08:22.53 propelling people towards 00:08:22.56\00:08:24.50 the soon coming of Jesus Christ 00:08:24.53\00:08:26.30 and all that that involves. 00:08:26.33\00:08:29.20 Christ is the center, Christ is the focus, 00:08:29.24\00:08:32.27 all of the doctrines and the beautiful truths 00:08:32.31\00:08:34.98 that we have are all centered in Jesus Christ. 00:08:35.01\00:08:38.01 Now the challenge comes when some aspects 00:08:38.05\00:08:41.48 which scripture is not as clear on, 00:08:41.52\00:08:44.42 develop into some discussion and differences of opinion, 00:08:44.45\00:08:48.52 but we should always remember 00:08:48.56\00:08:50.09 we need to come back to the word 00:08:50.13\00:08:51.63 and to a simple humble faith. 00:08:51.66\00:08:54.60 And I think Pentecost explains that 00:08:54.63\00:08:56.36 when people have this shared spiritual direction 00:08:56.40\00:09:01.37 reaching toward God, 00:09:01.40\00:09:02.74 it minimizes the dissension, that they weren't vying, 00:09:02.77\00:09:05.87 after Pentecost, the disciples weren't vying anymore 00:09:05.91\00:09:08.04 who'll be the greatest in the kingdom. 00:09:08.08\00:09:09.41 But the other thing, 00:09:09.44\00:09:10.78 I want to tell our viewers while you're on camera, 00:09:10.81\00:09:12.91 many people that write to me, 00:09:12.95\00:09:14.38 not just within our church, others, 00:09:14.42\00:09:16.58 they think internal church squabbles 00:09:16.62\00:09:18.35 are a religious liberty issue in the classic sense 00:09:18.39\00:09:20.96 because it's a free association, 00:09:20.99\00:09:22.62 there is no compulsion. 00:09:22.66\00:09:25.09 That's the key. 00:09:25.13\00:09:26.46 If there's compulsion even to a Seventh-day Sabbath 00:09:26.49\00:09:28.56 that is so important for our church, 00:09:28.60\00:09:31.07 that would be wrong, wouldn't it? 00:09:31.10\00:09:32.77 You don't require or force people to do 00:09:32.80\00:09:35.27 even the right thing. 00:09:35.30\00:09:36.64 You leave it up to the conscience, 00:09:36.67\00:09:38.27 and if it's spirit-directed, God, 00:09:38.31\00:09:41.21 we can trust that God will lead people toward truth, 00:09:41.24\00:09:43.55 it's the Spirit of truth. 00:09:43.58\00:09:44.91 And the Holy Spirit does that. 00:09:44.95\00:09:46.28 There's also a very important element 00:09:46.31\00:09:47.98 of humility in discussion as well 00:09:48.02\00:09:51.55 and surrender to the will of God 00:09:51.59\00:09:54.52 and to the influence of the Holy Spirit. 00:09:54.56\00:09:56.73 Because if you believe 00:09:56.76\00:09:58.09 that the Lord is leading in a movement, 00:09:58.13\00:10:00.23 you then are able to surrender 00:10:00.26\00:10:03.40 even your own hard held opinion to that of the body, 00:10:03.43\00:10:08.50 if you believe that this is truly God's church, 00:10:08.54\00:10:12.34 and a remnant people 00:10:12.37\00:10:13.71 who will be awaiting Christ's soon return. 00:10:13.74\00:10:17.15 You can believe that God Himself 00:10:17.18\00:10:19.51 will direct that people 00:10:19.55\00:10:21.32 and that group into a harmonious approach, 00:10:21.35\00:10:25.42 even if you may have 00:10:25.45\00:10:26.96 some dissension and disagreement, 00:10:26.99\00:10:29.72 that level of humility is also so important. 00:10:29.76\00:10:32.53 I appreciate your comment on that 00:10:32.56\00:10:34.36 because the way I see it, 00:10:34.40\00:10:36.06 your role and those in other denominations 00:10:36.10\00:10:38.83 that lead out, they've got a double problem, 00:10:38.87\00:10:40.80 projecting the view to the larger world 00:10:40.84\00:10:43.47 and then managing the believers behind you, 00:10:43.51\00:10:48.58 because human existence is turbulent. 00:10:48.61\00:10:51.38 It's not as simple as this, us, and then, them, 00:10:51.41\00:10:55.45 in reality under God, it's all, we. 00:10:55.48\00:10:58.55 But I think people should see this 00:10:58.59\00:11:00.16 and it's not necessary 00:11:00.19\00:11:02.99 for any church to be absolutely of a single, 00:11:03.02\00:11:08.26 you know, an unvarying viewpoint for it 00:11:08.30\00:11:10.17 to be consistent in projecting what it stands for, 00:11:10.20\00:11:13.54 because we're always gonna to have a little dissonance. 00:11:13.57\00:11:15.70 Yeah, but, you know, that beautiful verse that says, 00:11:15.74\00:11:19.81 "The Holy Spirit will lead us into all truth." 00:11:19.84\00:11:21.81 Oh, I believe that. 00:11:21.84\00:11:23.18 And that's where the unity is found. 00:11:23.21\00:11:24.55 In John 17, Christ's prayer for His disciples, 00:11:24.58\00:11:28.38 not only for those disciples but for those who would follow, 00:11:28.42\00:11:31.12 which includes us, that we be one in Christ, 00:11:31.15\00:11:34.19 now that, of course, means, 00:11:34.22\00:11:36.09 one in an understanding of what truth is. 00:11:36.12\00:11:37.76 Even I need to do another program 00:11:37.79\00:11:39.13 because oneness, a Christian oneness 00:11:39.16\00:11:41.13 is a loaded initiative now 00:11:41.16\00:11:43.83 and there shouldn't be a unification 00:11:43.87\00:11:46.07 on a false common ground. 00:11:46.10\00:11:47.70 Well, let's do another program. Yeah. 00:11:47.74\00:11:50.67 Well, thank you very much, 00:11:50.71\00:11:52.04 and thank you as always for your ongoing support 00:11:52.07\00:11:54.44 of religious liberty and Liberty Magazine. 00:11:54.48\00:11:56.61 Praise God. 00:11:56.64\00:11:58.41 This is the end of the program. 00:11:58.45\00:11:59.78 I'll have a little stand up after this, 00:11:59.81\00:12:01.22 but thank you for this time discussing together. 00:12:01.25\00:12:03.69 And great to be with you. 00:12:03.72\00:12:05.39 I hope you enjoyed that interview 00:12:05.42\00:12:06.76 with Elder Wilson as much as I did in conducting it. 00:12:06.79\00:12:10.16 And I'm hoping that at some later point, 00:12:10.19\00:12:11.93 I can sit down with him again. 00:12:11.96\00:12:14.60 I grew up as a Seventh-day Adventist 00:12:14.63\00:12:16.46 and as a young boy, 00:12:16.50\00:12:18.77 I often remember reading Adventist material 00:12:18.80\00:12:23.20 that linked to the reformation, 00:12:23.24\00:12:24.91 in particular, The Great Controversy, 00:12:24.94\00:12:28.11 one of the major books 00:12:28.14\00:12:29.54 written by early Adventist pioneer Ellen White 00:12:29.58\00:12:33.45 and largely that book is history, 00:12:33.48\00:12:35.92 and it was powerful for me as a young person, 00:12:35.95\00:12:38.85 not knowing a lot of history, 00:12:38.89\00:12:40.22 not knowing a lot of my church's history, 00:12:40.26\00:12:42.32 to read there the re-telling of the story 00:12:42.36\00:12:45.59 of truth through the edges, 00:12:45.63\00:12:47.46 and then hitting that high point 00:12:47.50\00:12:49.16 in the reformation with Luther, 00:12:49.20\00:12:51.63 Hus, Zwingli and other great reformers, 00:12:51.67\00:12:54.74 and to realizing that what they did in their day, 00:12:54.77\00:12:58.41 I am inheriting in my day 00:12:58.44\00:13:00.44 as the Seventh-day Adventist Christian 00:13:00.48\00:13:01.91 and of course, many other Christians, 00:13:01.94\00:13:04.11 Protestants, have inherited the things 00:13:04.15\00:13:07.62 that they fought for, 00:13:07.65\00:13:08.98 which most particularly 00:13:09.02\00:13:10.85 was religious freedom and expression. 00:13:10.89\00:13:15.32 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:13:15.36\00:13:17.79
