Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:04.43\00:00:06.53 Before the break with guest Nick Miller, 00:00:06.57\00:00:11.37 we were debating rather furiously. 00:00:11.41\00:00:14.28 But we actually we agree on this a lot. 00:00:14.31\00:00:17.21 The importance on the dangers 00:00:17.25\00:00:18.68 of this recent presidential action, 00:00:18.71\00:00:22.12 limiting immigration from certain countries 00:00:22.15\00:00:25.49 for fairly short time period, 00:00:25.52\00:00:27.82 and I think we agreed 00:00:27.86\00:00:29.19 that it's not legally as bad as it appears but perhaps, 00:00:29.22\00:00:32.36 behind the scenes 00:00:32.39\00:00:33.73 the attitudes that represents it is very danger. 00:00:33.76\00:00:35.10 Well, just to clarify, it's, it's a ban on all refuges. 00:00:35.13\00:00:39.03 Right. 00:00:39.07\00:00:40.40 For 120 days which is not too long. 00:00:40.44\00:00:43.74 But these seven countries indefinitely, 00:00:43.77\00:00:46.68 so we don't know how long that will continue for, 00:00:46.71\00:00:49.21 so it's not all just a short period. 00:00:49.24\00:00:51.21 Well, I could play the devil's advocate on this, 00:00:51.25\00:00:53.82 and I think it's troubling 00:00:53.85\00:00:56.28 if they were going to have such a ban, 00:00:56.32\00:00:57.92 why wouldn't say Saudi Arabia, and... 00:00:57.95\00:01:01.72 Well, someone had raised this. 00:01:01.76\00:01:03.09 And some other Middle Eastern countries 00:01:03.12\00:01:04.46 be included? 00:01:04.49\00:01:05.83 So, 19 of the 20 9/11 attackers were from Saudi Arabia. 00:01:05.86\00:01:09.13 Right, even as it shows a certain prejudice. 00:01:09.16\00:01:11.87 It also, also shows our strange alliances that are... 00:01:11.90\00:01:15.80 And where our business interest lies, 00:01:15.84\00:01:17.57 someone pointed out. 00:01:17.61\00:01:18.94 So, you know, I'm not sure in itself this is law 00:01:18.97\00:01:22.91 that reveals deep prejudice, 00:01:22.94\00:01:24.31 but there is some growing prejudice behind this. 00:01:24.35\00:01:27.68 I think that's right. 00:01:27.72\00:01:29.05 And I don't know the full answer, 00:01:29.08\00:01:30.59 I think we're all being rushed 00:01:30.62\00:01:33.49 to a certain polarizing world situation. 00:01:33.52\00:01:37.99 I do believe that the Muslim community 00:01:38.03\00:01:41.00 haven't done, some have done a lot, 00:01:41.03\00:01:43.83 but overall they haven't adequately 00:01:43.87\00:01:46.23 distanced themselves 00:01:46.27\00:01:47.60 from some of these heinous acts. 00:01:47.64\00:01:50.21 Well, are you familiar 00:01:50.24\00:01:51.57 with the Amman accords and statements. 00:01:51.61\00:01:55.28 I mean, in the early 2000's? Oh, I know this. 00:01:55.31\00:01:57.48 All the countries of the Middle East 00:01:57.51\00:02:00.42 came together with the leading religious scholars 00:02:00.45\00:02:03.62 and openly condemned terrorist attacks, 00:02:03.65\00:02:07.89 suicide attacks, the attacks on innocence 00:02:07.92\00:02:11.43 as contrary to Islam and contrary to the Quran, 00:02:11.46\00:02:15.06 and ISIS has been condemned in similar fashion 00:02:15.10\00:02:18.73 by this Muslim both civic and religious leaders. 00:02:18.77\00:02:21.50 And we don't talk much about this in the West 00:02:21.54\00:02:23.54 and give it the attention that it deserves. 00:02:23.57\00:02:25.37 That's what I'm saying consistently 00:02:25.41\00:02:26.98 there have been some, 00:02:27.01\00:02:28.34 this was one of the better things. 00:02:28.38\00:02:30.21 Although, I read the Quran 00:02:30.25\00:02:31.91 and I don't buy that it's opposed to the Quran. 00:02:31.95\00:02:34.38 Have you read the Old Testament as well? 00:02:34.42\00:02:36.22 There's a lot of things in the Quran as well... 00:02:36.25\00:02:37.59 No, but the, and the Old Testament 00:02:37.62\00:02:38.95 needs to be put in context. 00:02:38.99\00:02:40.39 Well, some would say 00:02:40.42\00:02:41.76 the Quran needs to be put in context as well. 00:02:41.79\00:02:43.53 Well, I had a few Imams on this program too. 00:02:43.56\00:02:47.80 No, I think the best thing to say about the Quran 00:02:47.83\00:02:50.70 which is said by Muslim is el-Sisi, 00:02:50.73\00:02:53.47 the general now that rules Egypt, 00:02:53.50\00:02:56.91 he's called for reformation in his own religion 00:02:56.94\00:03:00.94 where they repudiate this. 00:03:00.98\00:03:04.25 No, it's the average Muslim that caused this, 00:03:04.28\00:03:07.32 but many mullahs and imams have used the Quran 00:03:07.35\00:03:12.59 and incited populations improperly, I think. 00:03:12.62\00:03:15.16 Well, you know, who can disagree with that? 00:03:15.19\00:03:17.46 The problem that faces Islam is that, 00:03:17.49\00:03:23.06 they haven't experienced 00:03:23.10\00:03:24.43 the separation of church and state 00:03:24.47\00:03:25.80 like we have in the west. 00:03:25.83\00:03:27.17 Now, you're getting to it. I was going to say that before. 00:03:27.20\00:03:28.60 And that is the cultural conundrum 00:03:28.64\00:03:33.11 that we're facing 00:03:33.14\00:03:34.48 because that's just an undeniable truth of Islam. 00:03:34.51\00:03:39.51 And, of course, other groups have problems with it too. 00:03:39.55\00:03:42.25 But this is structurally built into Islam 00:03:42.28\00:03:45.09 that there should be no separation 00:03:45.12\00:03:46.69 between church and state. 00:03:46.72\00:03:48.06 I make the same comment about Roman Catholicism, 00:03:48.09\00:03:50.83 or the papacy, 00:03:50.86\00:03:52.69 here is the state masquerading as a church 00:03:52.73\00:03:55.13 or a church masquerading as the state. 00:03:55.16\00:03:57.47 By its very nature that is problematic. 00:03:57.50\00:04:00.07 I mean, they have the right to be, and do, 00:04:00.10\00:04:02.20 and whatever but to try to meld that together 00:04:02.24\00:04:05.14 with the constitutional separation of church and state 00:04:05.17\00:04:08.01 is an unholy marriage. 00:04:08.04\00:04:09.38 Well, until about 400 to 500 years ago 00:04:09.41\00:04:11.51 Christianity or Christendom... 00:04:11.55\00:04:13.25 Didn't see it either. Didn't see it. 00:04:13.28\00:04:14.88 That's why I used the term reformation... 00:04:14.92\00:04:16.48 We need to talk about that. 00:04:16.52\00:04:18.42 And we will have a program coming up 00:04:18.45\00:04:20.16 about 500 years of the reformation 00:04:20.19\00:04:22.16 and what that means. 00:04:22.19\00:04:23.53 But in talking about Islam, 00:04:23.56\00:04:25.29 it's interesting I've developed the relationship 00:04:25.33\00:04:27.33 with an imam close to my home church 00:04:27.36\00:04:29.86 and visited his mosque 00:04:29.90\00:04:31.33 and I feel this is the time when our Muslim neighbors 00:04:31.37\00:04:35.77 need to know they have friends. 00:04:35.80\00:04:37.97 There are hate crimes on the rise. 00:04:38.01\00:04:40.68 And as I've gotten to know my Muslim friends, 00:04:40.71\00:04:43.55 it's clear that they appreciate 00:04:43.58\00:04:46.21 the peace and pluralism of America. 00:04:46.25\00:04:48.72 Oh, absolutely. 00:04:48.75\00:04:50.09 The imam that I have this, this relationship with, 00:04:50.12\00:04:53.56 we were at lunch in my university cafeteria 00:04:53.59\00:04:56.12 little while back. 00:04:56.16\00:04:57.49 And we got talking about 00:04:57.53\00:04:58.86 the separation of church and state. 00:04:58.89\00:05:00.70 I was interested to know what he thought. 00:05:00.73\00:05:02.63 He grew up and did his study in Egypt. 00:05:02.66\00:05:05.67 And so he's looking at what's happening in Egypt now 00:05:05.70\00:05:08.34 with the government controlling the imams, 00:05:08.37\00:05:11.24 what they can say, what they can do. 00:05:11.27\00:05:12.87 And he says, 00:05:12.91\00:05:14.24 "Your American system is much better. 00:05:14.28\00:05:15.94 I like the separation of church and state." 00:05:15.98\00:05:18.85 So when, when Muslims come west, 00:05:18.88\00:05:22.18 they are not bent at least... 00:05:22.22\00:05:24.12 No, and I think it's, it's one of the success... 00:05:24.15\00:05:25.95 On jihad... 00:05:25.99\00:05:27.32 It's a success stories of the modern world 00:05:27.36\00:05:30.03 that the United States has been a moderating 00:05:30.06\00:05:33.80 and a calming influence on immigrants from all over 00:05:33.83\00:05:37.53 and Islamic populations are no different. 00:05:37.57\00:05:41.64 I don't think it's true that the United States 00:05:41.67\00:05:43.84 is hotbed of radical Islam. 00:05:43.87\00:05:46.21 I don't think at all. 00:05:46.24\00:05:47.58 Europe has much more of a problem and, of course, 00:05:47.61\00:05:50.75 the Islamic world is facing a huge crisis. 00:05:50.78\00:05:54.75 And that's why el-Sisi says, 00:05:54.78\00:05:56.18 "We need the reformation within our system." 00:05:56.22\00:05:58.05 And why has America done so much better than Europe? 00:05:58.09\00:06:00.46 Separation of church and state. 00:06:00.49\00:06:01.82 I would propose, because of our pluralism 00:06:01.86\00:06:03.96 Muslim and immigrant groups come 00:06:03.99\00:06:05.86 and they assimilate, 00:06:05.89\00:06:07.23 they become part of our society in ways 00:06:07.26\00:06:09.60 that the Europeans don't. 00:06:09.63\00:06:11.17 It doesn't happen in Europe. 00:06:11.20\00:06:12.53 And I think we both agreed that this recent executive action, 00:06:12.57\00:06:18.07 while it has a certain logic behind it, 00:06:18.11\00:06:20.34 is really counterproductive 00:06:20.38\00:06:22.18 because it throws the wrong signal. 00:06:22.21\00:06:24.05 Well, it's going to put us on the road 00:06:24.08\00:06:26.31 to becoming more alike Europe 00:06:26.35\00:06:27.98 where we have balkanized ethnic and religious groups 00:06:28.02\00:06:31.39 that don't assimilate 00:06:31.42\00:06:32.95 and therefore become hotbeds of extremism. 00:06:32.99\00:06:36.02 You know, I think as Christians, 00:06:36.06\00:06:38.06 we need to think about this. 00:06:38.09\00:06:39.43 The Bible has a teaching on immigrants, 00:06:39.46\00:06:41.03 did you know that? 00:06:41.06\00:06:42.40 I thought a few verses that were worth sharing. 00:06:42.43\00:06:44.47 It's strange talking about this... 00:06:44.50\00:06:45.83 Strange. But it is with the new guys. 00:06:45.87\00:06:47.20 Well, the Book of Leviticus says that, 00:06:47.24\00:06:50.11 "But the stranger that dwelt with you 00:06:50.14\00:06:52.51 shall be unto you as one born among you, 00:06:52.54\00:06:55.41 and thou shall love him as thyself, 00:06:55.44\00:06:59.41 for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt", 00:06:59.45\00:07:01.72 that's Leviticus 19:34. 00:07:01.75\00:07:03.95 It talks about allowing him to glean in the vineyards 00:07:03.99\00:07:07.12 along with the poor. 00:07:07.16\00:07:09.09 Also, Leviticus 24:22 says, " 00:07:09.12\00:07:13.06 You shall have one manner of law, 00:07:13.09\00:07:14.83 as well as for the stranger, 00:07:14.86\00:07:16.36 as for one of your own country: for I am the Lord your God. 00:07:16.40\00:07:19.33 The Bible knew about equal protection of the law 00:07:19.37\00:07:22.10 in relation to race and religion. 00:07:22.14\00:07:25.31 Now, it's not the religion per se, 00:07:25.34\00:07:27.48 but I think an aspect of Islam 00:07:27.51\00:07:30.58 that derived directly from its Arabian influence, 00:07:30.61\00:07:35.58 is this hospitality and this, this cult charities. 00:07:35.62\00:07:40.22 So you can find the same thing 00:07:40.26\00:07:42.52 within Islam if you look for it. 00:07:42.56\00:07:44.03 Well, indeed, in fact, 00:07:44.06\00:07:47.00 Muslims have a higher sense than many Christians do. 00:07:47.03\00:07:50.77 There is a teaching of hospitality, isn't there? 00:07:50.80\00:07:53.40 Three days, taking care of a stranger who is in need. 00:07:53.44\00:07:56.20 In fact, if Jesus was telling the good Samaritan story today, 00:07:56.24\00:08:00.24 have you wondered 00:08:00.28\00:08:01.61 who he would make the Samaritan? 00:08:01.64\00:08:02.98 Oh, I think there is no question. 00:08:03.01\00:08:04.35 The Samaritan doesn't mean anything to us. 00:08:04.38\00:08:05.91 We don't have prejudices against them, 00:08:05.95\00:08:08.02 but in Christ's day the Jews thought 00:08:08.05\00:08:09.82 the Samaritans were possessed by demons 00:08:09.85\00:08:12.09 and were the false religion 00:08:12.12\00:08:13.69 as contrasted with the Jewish religion. 00:08:13.72\00:08:15.92 Well, who fits that bill today? 00:08:15.96\00:08:17.89 I think Islam. It's mighty closely. 00:08:17.93\00:08:19.96 The good Samaritan if Christ was telling the story 00:08:20.00\00:08:22.50 would be a Muslim imam 00:08:22.53\00:08:24.23 who is showing the hospitality of the Muslim world 00:08:24.27\00:08:29.07 as opposed to... 00:08:29.10\00:08:30.44 I'm mulling that over. I'm willing to accept it. 00:08:30.47\00:08:32.61 It's worth remembering, though, 00:08:32.64\00:08:34.18 many people might have forgotten, 00:08:34.21\00:08:35.61 the Samaritans were those that stay behind 00:08:35.64\00:08:38.55 or were left behind in one of the captivities. 00:08:38.58\00:08:40.78 Right. 00:08:40.82\00:08:42.15 And, so they were Jews to start with 00:08:42.18\00:08:44.02 who adopted more of the local animistic 00:08:44.05\00:08:47.22 or pagan beliefs. 00:08:47.26\00:08:48.99 On the place of worshiping scenario. 00:08:49.02\00:08:50.36 Right, so it deviated from the truth. 00:08:50.39\00:08:52.83 It really wasn't a total other religion 00:08:52.86\00:08:55.36 because the Samaritans had many aspects in common. 00:08:55.40\00:08:57.67 Right. 00:08:57.70\00:08:59.03 And I guess, we can say that with Islam. 00:08:59.07\00:09:00.87 With Islam too, the Old Testament... 00:09:00.90\00:09:02.67 They hark back to the Old Testament 00:09:02.70\00:09:04.31 and, of course, 00:09:04.34\00:09:05.87 it goes back to the blood feud 00:09:05.91\00:09:07.71 between the two sons of Abraham. 00:09:07.74\00:09:11.18 Right. Ishmael and Isaac. 00:09:11.21\00:09:15.45 And it is interesting to read the Quran. 00:09:15.48\00:09:17.59 It tells some of the same stories 00:09:17.62\00:09:19.05 but with the twist. 00:09:19.09\00:09:20.42 Yes, yes. Indeed. 00:09:20.46\00:09:22.36 And this being the mahoosive time 00:09:22.39\00:09:25.19 to bring up something that's I found offensive. 00:09:25.23\00:09:27.36 A few people have gone off, and made fools of themselves 00:09:27.40\00:09:31.03 by questioning whether Islam worships the same God. 00:09:31.07\00:09:34.74 And what is your view on that? 00:09:34.77\00:09:36.10 Of course, they worship the same God. 00:09:36.14\00:09:37.47 They describe Him in a way that I'm uncomfortable with. 00:09:37.51\00:09:40.31 But they're calling on the Ancient of Days. 00:09:40.34\00:09:43.65 They have 99 names of God, right, 00:09:43.68\00:09:46.11 which are his attributes, just, and righteous, and holy, 00:09:46.15\00:09:49.78 and if you look at those attributes, 00:09:49.82\00:09:51.99 there is not one that really Christians don't agree with. 00:09:52.02\00:09:54.52 No. 00:09:54.56\00:09:55.89 I think that's, that is a very dangerous line to go 00:09:55.92\00:09:58.69 to say that they are not even worshipping God. 00:09:58.73\00:10:00.86 Same God. 00:10:00.90\00:10:02.23 They say they are worshipping the same God. 00:10:02.26\00:10:05.23 Within Christianity, we all worship the same God 00:10:05.27\00:10:08.24 but it's described, 00:10:08.27\00:10:09.60 He's described or His laws or so... 00:10:09.64\00:10:10.97 These laws of God and... 00:10:11.01\00:10:12.34 Right, I'm uncomfortable with how they interpret them. 00:10:12.37\00:10:14.18 But I don't question 00:10:14.21\00:10:15.54 that the Roman Catholics worship the God of the Bible. 00:10:15.58\00:10:18.35 Yes, I think that's important cause otherwise you will say 00:10:18.38\00:10:20.62 they are worshiping the devil essentially. 00:10:20.65\00:10:21.98 Right. 00:10:22.02\00:10:23.35 Just like the Jews said about the Samaritans. 00:10:23.39\00:10:24.72 And that is where religion really turns toxic 00:10:24.75\00:10:26.89 when you cast the other as an absolute evil. 00:10:26.92\00:10:29.12 Right. 00:10:29.16\00:10:30.49 Because in religion, evil is to be destroyed 00:10:30.53\00:10:32.56 or to be to taken away, 00:10:32.59\00:10:35.03 you know, it's the ultimate other. 00:10:35.06\00:10:36.40 The only thing to do is crusade against it. 00:10:36.43\00:10:38.83 Not bad word. 00:10:38.87\00:10:40.57 Exactly, that's the point. Yeah. 00:10:40.60\00:10:42.14 Now, there's no question 00:10:42.17\00:10:43.57 that I think this recent action 00:10:43.61\00:10:45.81 is a call to a soul to be more charitable, 00:10:45.84\00:10:47.88 to be more understanding not to polarize communities 00:10:47.91\00:10:51.21 that doesn't work well. 00:10:51.25\00:10:52.91 At the same time, 00:10:52.95\00:10:54.28 we shouldn't just gloss over very real differences. 00:10:54.32\00:10:57.39 We're not of the one belief 00:10:57.42\00:10:59.32 and syncretism is not the answer to this. 00:10:59.35\00:11:01.59 No, no, that's right. 00:11:01.62\00:11:03.83 We as Christians need to have a sense 00:11:03.86\00:11:07.06 of what our Holy Book calls us to 00:11:07.10\00:11:10.73 "Of a care for the stranger and the alien, 00:11:10.77\00:11:13.94 whether they'd be of different race 00:11:13.97\00:11:15.64 or different religion." 00:11:15.67\00:11:17.34 We obviously have to be responsible 00:11:17.37\00:11:19.34 with our country and with our families. 00:11:19.37\00:11:22.88 Vetting and screening techniques 00:11:22.91\00:11:24.78 need to be in place to assure our security. 00:11:24.81\00:11:28.78 But ultimately drawing lines 00:11:28.82\00:11:31.12 along religious divisions and identities 00:11:31.15\00:11:33.59 will be neither healthy for ourselves 00:11:33.62\00:11:35.69 or for our country. 00:11:35.72\00:11:37.59 And we need to rediscover the principles of pluralism, 00:11:37.63\00:11:41.10 separation of church and state in religious freedom. 00:11:41.13\00:11:45.53 One of the most charitable provisions 00:11:45.57\00:11:48.87 of the Old Testament system 00:11:48.90\00:11:50.94 was the establishment of the cities of refuge. 00:11:50.97\00:11:54.64 Whereby anyone escaping justice 00:11:54.68\00:11:56.75 or any sort of a chequered past could go to that city 00:11:56.78\00:12:00.72 and obtain literal refuge from punishment 00:12:00.75\00:12:03.75 and from any number of harassments. 00:12:03.79\00:12:06.89 The nation of Israel too, 00:12:06.92\00:12:08.26 as they were moving out into a new land 00:12:08.29\00:12:10.63 and fighting pitch battles against their opponents, 00:12:10.66\00:12:13.43 still those same opponents 00:12:13.46\00:12:15.63 could gain refuge with God's people 00:12:15.66\00:12:18.23 if they joined with them. 00:12:18.27\00:12:19.77 Always forgiven and they were embraced 00:12:19.80\00:12:22.00 by the world. 00:12:22.04\00:12:23.37 I think that principle can be applied today 00:12:23.41\00:12:26.01 in an enlightened nation like the United States. 00:12:26.04\00:12:29.28 We should be prepared to embrace and shelter 00:12:29.31\00:12:32.48 those who have come 00:12:32.51\00:12:33.92 even from disturbingly violent backgrounds. 00:12:33.95\00:12:37.89 And in spite 00:12:37.92\00:12:39.25 of the complicating political situation, 00:12:39.29\00:12:41.29 charity is always the best policy. 00:12:41.32\00:12:45.09 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:12:45.13\00:12:48.40
