Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:05.87\00:00:08.04 We've taken a short break 00:00:08.07\00:00:09.40 and I wanna continue with Amjad 00:00:09.44\00:00:12.44 who's had a varied career as a... 00:00:12.47\00:00:16.95 you used the term that very few people would know, 00:00:16.98\00:00:20.28 even some of your fellow Adventist of younger age... 00:00:20.32\00:00:23.55 Colporteur. Colporteur. 00:00:23.59\00:00:24.92 I don't know the origin of that word. 00:00:24.95\00:00:26.69 But the best description is you're an evangelist, 00:00:26.72\00:00:29.79 going door-to-door, sharing printed material. 00:00:29.82\00:00:34.70 And while we were in a computer revolution 00:00:34.73\00:00:36.97 and people addict to it saying this is the end of print, 00:00:37.00\00:00:39.70 it hasn't come yet and many people 00:00:39.73\00:00:42.20 get great pleasure from reading Christian material 00:00:42.24\00:00:47.94 and you've been doing that. 00:00:47.98\00:00:49.74 Now, at the moment, 00:00:49.78\00:00:52.11 between visits back to Pakistan, 00:00:52.15\00:00:54.42 you're selling materials in the United States right now. 00:00:54.45\00:00:57.65 How do you find that? 00:00:57.69\00:00:59.15 Because there's a lot of talk in the US, 00:00:59.19\00:01:02.02 a little bit like in England, that sort of, 00:01:02.06\00:01:05.36 many people oppose Christian, 00:01:05.39\00:01:06.83 they're not really religiously oriented. 00:01:06.86\00:01:08.63 How do you find that? 00:01:08.66\00:01:10.00 Is their prejudice against 00:01:10.03\00:01:11.37 even just showing them moral Christian material? 00:01:11.40\00:01:14.64 Here is a good advantage is this in United States is 00:01:14.67\00:01:19.57 all our publications are in English 00:01:19.61\00:01:21.84 and people speak English. 00:01:21.88\00:01:24.01 And mostly they can read it and when we approach them, 00:01:24.05\00:01:27.72 you know, that, we do have challenges, 00:01:27.75\00:01:31.15 but it's not bad as other places are, 00:01:31.19\00:01:33.92 you know, that. 00:01:33.96\00:01:35.29 We, it is challenge that 00:01:35.32\00:01:36.73 many people will not respond to it, 00:01:36.76\00:01:38.86 people will not buy it. 00:01:38.89\00:01:40.30 And even in many homes and we visit they say, 00:01:40.33\00:01:45.20 "We are not Christians or no. 00:01:45.23\00:01:47.04 We have no religion" sometime religion, 00:01:47.07\00:01:50.61 but many says that we, okay, we are Protestants, 00:01:50.64\00:01:54.64 we are Catholics, 00:01:54.68\00:01:56.01 we are not Seventh-day Adventist 00:01:56.04\00:01:57.38 when they find it. 00:01:57.41\00:01:58.75 Even though we don't start that we, 00:01:58.78\00:02:00.65 it's a Seventh-day Adventist thing, 00:02:00.68\00:02:02.08 we state Home Health Education is promoting this. 00:02:02.12\00:02:05.09 So you find there is some resistance. 00:02:05.12\00:02:06.62 There is a resistance and once they know, 00:02:06.65\00:02:08.72 many places, you're Seventh-day Adventist, 00:02:08.76\00:02:10.29 they say, "No, no, no, no, 00:02:10.33\00:02:11.66 we have our own religion, we have our own denominations." 00:02:11.69\00:02:15.00 Gave at the office. Yeah. 00:02:15.03\00:02:17.90 So there are, challenges are there 00:02:17.93\00:02:20.04 when you see there, 00:02:20.07\00:02:21.40 but the work is been always difficult 00:02:21.44\00:02:25.01 and challenging from the beginning, 00:02:25.04\00:02:27.48 but it's not impossible. 00:02:27.51\00:02:29.41 It's still going on, and we still see the Lord, 00:02:29.44\00:02:33.15 you know, help and work on hearts. 00:02:33.18\00:02:36.38 What is that? 00:02:36.42\00:02:37.75 Do you remember any particularly 00:02:37.79\00:02:39.32 memorable experiences 00:02:39.35\00:02:40.92 you've had as you've gone door-to-door? 00:02:40.96\00:02:43.16 Bad one or good one? 00:02:43.19\00:02:44.76 Do you wanna ask? 00:02:44.79\00:02:46.13 Yeah, I was looking for good, but bad ones were telling this, 00:02:46.16\00:02:48.23 this is a religious liberty program 00:02:48.26\00:02:51.33 and so there's ups in religious liberty 00:02:51.37\00:02:53.77 and this is sad in a way, 00:02:53.80\00:02:55.20 often religious liberty is described in the negative 00:02:55.24\00:02:57.57 where there's problems. 00:02:57.61\00:02:59.41 Where there's none people figure it's... 00:02:59.44\00:03:01.14 Many good experience people, you know, 00:03:01.18\00:03:04.41 invite us for prayers and they want to listen, 00:03:04.45\00:03:06.95 they take our books very respectfully. 00:03:06.98\00:03:09.12 And even they don't want to say no, 00:03:09.15\00:03:12.62 there are many, say, it's, okay, 00:03:12.65\00:03:13.99 we don't want it, thank you so much. 00:03:14.02\00:03:16.29 But there are times, you know, 00:03:16.32\00:03:17.99 people bang door on us, 00:03:18.03\00:03:19.76 you know, that there are people who can be very abusive, 00:03:19.79\00:03:23.10 you know, that one fellow, you know, said, 00:03:23.13\00:03:25.23 "Get out of it and he said the words 00:03:25.27\00:03:27.50 which I don't want to say that." 00:03:27.54\00:03:28.94 And he chased me out very badly from that place, you know. 00:03:28.97\00:03:32.51 And another thing is sometime, 00:03:32.54\00:03:34.58 within our own denomination or organization, 00:03:34.61\00:03:37.91 we don't respect as other people are respecting 00:03:37.95\00:03:40.85 outside the work, you know, 00:03:40.88\00:03:42.65 but many are not within our organization, 00:03:42.68\00:03:45.95 do that too, 00:03:45.99\00:03:47.32 but I see there are some both... 00:03:47.36\00:03:50.09 I think I know what you're saying, 00:03:50.13\00:03:51.46 would explain that because... 00:03:51.49\00:03:53.60 You don't believe within our own Adventists community, 00:03:53.63\00:03:57.40 the work of the LE is regarded very highly. 00:03:57.43\00:04:01.07 Is that what you are saying? Yeah. 00:04:01.10\00:04:02.44 It is, some places and some people think, 00:04:02.47\00:04:06.01 you know, this is, oh, you're LE, okay, okay. 00:04:06.04\00:04:08.81 Why is that? 00:04:08.84\00:04:10.18 I have my opinions but why do you think that...? 00:04:10.21\00:04:12.11 Literature evangelism is been always, 00:04:15.25\00:04:18.05 as I said, is challenging and hard, 00:04:18.09\00:04:20.42 but sometime people think, 00:04:20.46\00:04:22.12 maybe people are tired of keep buying the books 00:04:22.16\00:04:24.89 and that's why maybe one reason, 00:04:24.93\00:04:26.80 I can think of it. 00:04:26.83\00:04:28.50 That's why they don't want to deal with you. 00:04:28.53\00:04:30.47 No, but within the church why, 00:04:30.50\00:04:32.70 what has caused this that you picked up on occasion, 00:04:32.73\00:04:36.67 I'm sure most people don't think that, 00:04:36.71\00:04:38.81 but perhaps a significant number have the idea 00:04:38.84\00:04:42.18 that this is not a... 00:04:42.21\00:04:43.95 They don't think highly of the ministry. 00:04:43.98\00:04:45.61 Why would that be? 00:04:45.65\00:04:46.98 Highly of the ministry is that 00:04:47.02\00:04:50.42 maybe people are more educated 00:04:50.45\00:04:52.42 or they don't consider this is important. 00:04:52.45\00:04:56.42 You can see the value of it, our ABCs are closing, you know, 00:04:56.46\00:05:00.00 that our own people if buy, you know, 00:05:00.03\00:05:01.86 our ABC will not close, believe me. 00:05:01.90\00:05:04.57 ABC, lot of places are closing and some... 00:05:04.60\00:05:09.47 And recently, I was in California 00:05:09.50\00:05:11.47 and all our, 00:05:11.51\00:05:12.84 all our conference are looking for ABC manager 00:05:12.87\00:05:16.14 because nobody wants to work there, 00:05:16.18\00:05:17.85 you know, what is the problem that 00:05:17.88\00:05:19.31 there is a problem that's why they have challenges. 00:05:19.35\00:05:23.08 That's sad because you obviously 00:05:23.12\00:05:25.22 know the history of the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:05:25.25\00:05:27.72 which was is unique to itself, 00:05:27.76\00:05:30.99 but by my understanding of history 00:05:31.03\00:05:34.00 in the United States particularly, 00:05:34.03\00:05:36.06 at the time period the US or the Adventist church began, 00:05:36.10\00:05:40.20 within the US there was much promotion 00:05:40.24\00:05:43.74 door-to-door of printed material. 00:05:43.77\00:05:45.24 Yeah. 00:05:45.27\00:05:46.61 As Sister White said... And salesman. 00:05:46.64\00:05:48.01 You see, as Sister White said, 00:05:48.04\00:05:49.54 Sister Ellen G. White said that... 00:05:49.58\00:05:50.91 Ellen White was the one of the Adventist pioneers 00:05:50.95\00:05:52.38 who we believe God has... 00:05:52.41\00:05:53.82 She highly promoted 00:05:53.85\00:05:55.18 and she said this will be the last work 00:05:55.22\00:05:56.65 until probation closed. 00:05:56.69\00:05:58.02 Right, that's what I am viewing at so. 00:05:58.05\00:05:59.39 You know, and laymen will finish 00:05:59.42\00:06:00.76 the work there itself. 00:06:00.79\00:06:02.12 But going back to history, this is a projection and a hope 00:06:02.16\00:06:05.59 and an insightful statement, 00:06:05.63\00:06:08.90 but it's just a matter of plain history, 00:06:08.93\00:06:11.03 that the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:06:11.07\00:06:12.57 as well as other religious entities of its time 00:06:12.60\00:06:15.40 when it began, 00:06:15.44\00:06:16.77 it developed and grew exponentially purely 00:06:16.81\00:06:19.81 because of the literature evangelism work. 00:06:19.84\00:06:22.44 And I'm old enough to remember 00:06:22.48\00:06:23.85 when every pastor had to spend one year 00:06:23.88\00:06:27.52 as a literature evangelist. 00:06:27.55\00:06:28.88 Now it's very different. 00:06:28.92\00:06:30.25 It's a prerequisite to ministry. 00:06:30.29\00:06:31.62 Now it's very different. 00:06:31.65\00:06:32.99 Before pastor could not graduate, 00:06:33.02\00:06:35.16 if they would have not done the work. 00:06:35.19\00:06:37.26 And now, they can do theology 00:06:37.29\00:06:39.39 without this work and they do so. 00:06:39.43\00:06:41.23 I think they should bring that same policy back 00:06:41.26\00:06:43.57 and they should let people work, 00:06:43.60\00:06:45.17 and then at least they will be... 00:06:45.20\00:06:47.57 it actually a good experience to talk to public. 00:06:47.60\00:06:50.64 Well, it strengthens your own faith, 00:06:50.67\00:06:52.01 but also it teaches you to project your ideas 00:06:52.04\00:06:54.98 to other people as a salesman. 00:06:55.01\00:06:57.05 You are not there as a salesman, 00:06:57.08\00:06:58.41 but like everyone at any time effectively 00:06:58.45\00:07:01.02 you have to be selling your idea what you evangelize... 00:07:01.05\00:07:02.95 Yeah, sure. 00:07:02.98\00:07:04.32 It is a sale but it is... 00:07:04.35\00:07:05.69 But it's very much tied up to your success 00:07:05.72\00:07:07.26 as an LE whether you're able to explain 00:07:07.29\00:07:09.79 what you believe correctly. 00:07:09.82\00:07:11.16 Yeah, yeah. 00:07:11.19\00:07:12.53 Explain this book in an attractive way 00:07:12.56\00:07:13.90 that they wanted. 00:07:13.93\00:07:15.26 Actually the main purpose of the literature ministry is 00:07:15.30\00:07:17.30 to introduce them to for the health messages, 00:07:17.33\00:07:21.37 and also about the love of Jesus, you know. 00:07:21.40\00:07:24.01 At the end of the day, 00:07:24.04\00:07:25.37 we just tell about the Christianity, 00:07:25.41\00:07:29.41 about the Seventh-day Adventist church, 00:07:29.44\00:07:31.88 what their views are. 00:07:31.91\00:07:33.38 Actually, we need to have more colporteurs, 00:07:33.42\00:07:35.92 we need to have more people working this, 00:07:35.95\00:07:38.22 even volunteer base or even for, 00:07:38.25\00:07:40.42 you know, living, then this work will grow. 00:07:40.46\00:07:43.43 In the past if you see, Brother Lincoln, 00:07:43.46\00:07:46.16 that this work has grown in the past, 00:07:46.19\00:07:48.93 it came from very humble beginning 00:07:48.96\00:07:50.80 and that's why we have publishing houses 00:07:50.83\00:07:52.70 all over the world. 00:07:52.73\00:07:54.07 We have colporteur work going all over the world, 00:07:54.10\00:07:57.97 but it is coming down, down, 00:07:58.01\00:08:00.28 but it's dropping, you know, that... 00:08:00.31\00:08:02.14 In the West? Yeah. 00:08:02.18\00:08:03.51 In the US, in Australia... 00:08:03.55\00:08:04.88 In US and other parts of the world, 00:08:04.91\00:08:06.25 we're struggling, you know. 00:08:06.28\00:08:07.62 In England, in Canada, which is ironic. 00:08:07.65\00:08:10.29 It needed more attention. That's what I think. 00:08:10.32\00:08:13.42 But you put your finger on something that, 00:08:13.46\00:08:16.16 you know, this is an Adventist internal issue, 00:08:16.19\00:08:19.39 but I think it's worth talking about 00:08:19.43\00:08:21.90 on a larger discussion to a community in general. 00:08:21.93\00:08:26.17 When there's respect for a religion 00:08:26.20\00:08:30.81 and religious ministry, it will flourish. 00:08:30.84\00:08:32.77 When people turn against it, 00:08:32.81\00:08:36.38 that's a very negative backward attitude. 00:08:36.41\00:08:39.75 What they're saying now, what they're saying is... 00:08:39.78\00:08:41.45 And our own church is marginalized 00:08:41.48\00:08:42.82 what you're doing and that's not good. 00:08:42.85\00:08:44.19 Yeah. 00:08:44.22\00:08:45.55 And I just wanted to say that, they say it, 00:08:45.59\00:08:49.59 that electronic media or, you know, 00:08:49.62\00:08:52.36 the computer age has affected. 00:08:52.39\00:08:54.60 It is true, it is affected. 00:08:54.63\00:08:55.96 All our books are on like, you can read it on the phone, 00:08:56.00\00:09:00.20 or on the computer online, 00:09:00.24\00:09:02.70 and this is the reason people don't buy it and but... 00:09:02.74\00:09:05.94 I don't think so. 00:09:05.97\00:09:07.31 But I think we're not doing our part either, 00:09:07.34\00:09:09.21 you know, that. 00:09:09.24\00:09:11.15 You know, you can look on the magazine racks 00:09:11.18\00:09:14.62 and there's more magazines than before. 00:09:14.65\00:09:17.29 Many that don't print as much as they used to, 00:09:17.32\00:09:19.42 but there's still an ongoing demand to read... 00:09:19.45\00:09:21.66 I will not say the name because it's on television, 00:09:21.69\00:09:24.26 but within our own organization, 00:09:24.29\00:09:25.99 many places you cannot put your own 00:09:26.03\00:09:28.23 Seventh-day Adventists printed material there. 00:09:28.26\00:09:33.40 So what kind of freedom is this? 00:09:33.44\00:09:35.30 Within your own organization, we own them, 00:09:35.34\00:09:37.81 and we should have, you know, 00:09:37.84\00:09:39.37 there our publications sitting there 00:09:39.41\00:09:41.48 and people should, you know, and this you can't. 00:09:41.51\00:09:43.91 And there's a need for openness, 00:09:43.95\00:09:46.95 and an allowance, 00:09:46.98\00:09:48.48 not just that religious liberty did not marginalize you, 00:09:48.52\00:09:51.99 but a greater vision on sharing faith, 00:09:52.02\00:09:55.36 that's what religious liberty is. 00:09:55.39\00:09:57.23 It should be an unimpeded distribution 00:09:57.26\00:10:00.36 of faith and truth. 00:10:00.40\00:10:02.10 Yeah, this is, if I see... 00:10:02.13\00:10:03.87 And by the way, I need to do this... 00:10:03.90\00:10:05.23 with the little time we've got left, 00:10:05.27\00:10:06.60 I want to make a statement. 00:10:06.63\00:10:07.97 Liberty Magazine, 00:10:08.00\00:10:10.07 we're printing as many as 185, 000 every issue. 00:10:10.11\00:10:14.11 That's quite a lot. 00:10:14.14\00:10:15.98 And I hear some of the same comments from people, 00:10:16.01\00:10:18.21 "Well, printing not anymore 00:10:18.25\00:10:20.08 it's the Internet, and Twitter." 00:10:20.12\00:10:21.75 We have a president 00:10:21.78\00:10:23.12 who came to power largely through Twitter. 00:10:23.15\00:10:26.29 So you can't say that that doesn't work, 00:10:26.32\00:10:28.72 but for Liberty Magazine, we want legislators, 00:10:28.76\00:10:32.29 and thought leaders, 00:10:32.33\00:10:33.66 and community leaders to get this and sends it... 00:10:33.70\00:10:35.90 that we sent it to them. 00:10:35.93\00:10:37.27 They are not going to, by chance, 00:10:37.30\00:10:38.63 put their hand up 00:10:38.67\00:10:40.00 and like the fly flying around little in the wind, 00:10:40.04\00:10:42.50 you know, an internet connection 00:10:42.54\00:10:43.87 they'll discover it. 00:10:43.91\00:10:45.24 It's not going to happen randomly. 00:10:45.27\00:10:46.61 These need to be targeted. 00:10:46.64\00:10:48.14 And when you go to door-to-door, 00:10:48.18\00:10:49.51 you're looking for people who have a direct need, 00:10:49.54\00:10:52.28 they will always welcome the reading. 00:10:52.31\00:10:54.52 Because reading is not dying away, 00:10:54.55\00:10:56.38 it is the way it's distributed is changing. 00:10:56.42\00:10:58.79 People still love to read, you know, this is a reason, 00:10:58.82\00:11:01.19 you know, that we still have some success, you know, 00:11:01.22\00:11:05.33 that people are reading our book. 00:11:05.36\00:11:06.70 Yeah. 00:11:06.73\00:11:08.06 And I'm sure, 00:11:08.10\00:11:09.43 as I was trying to draw out from you, 00:11:09.46\00:11:10.80 you'll have many positive experiences 00:11:10.83\00:11:12.87 and it's a hard sell with your own membership sometimes, 00:11:12.90\00:11:15.44 hard sell on given doors 00:11:15.47\00:11:16.87 where they might chase you away. 00:11:16.91\00:11:18.31 Yeah, they do, they do. 00:11:18.34\00:11:19.67 But many times I'm sure you've seen 00:11:19.71\00:11:21.04 God's Spirit moving in an openness... 00:11:21.08\00:11:22.41 It does. 00:11:22.44\00:11:23.78 And it, the Lord always led us, 00:11:23.81\00:11:25.45 you know, to many places where, 00:11:25.48\00:11:28.25 you know, that we have, you know, 00:11:28.28\00:11:30.15 this work successfully done. 00:11:30.19\00:11:32.12 And we have sold many of sets of Bible stories 00:11:32.15\00:11:35.76 and My Bible Friends and even health literature 00:11:35.79\00:11:39.93 to many of the people. 00:11:39.96\00:11:43.67 In the closing hours of the Soviet Socialist Republic, 00:11:43.70\00:11:50.37 there was much talk of two terms 00:11:50.41\00:11:52.41 that in Russian were expressed as glasnost and Perestroika, 00:11:52.44\00:11:56.31 openness and reorganization, 00:11:56.34\00:11:59.51 and when I look at the world today, 00:11:59.55\00:12:02.22 thankfully communism is largely faded, 00:12:02.25\00:12:05.05 but we are in great need of openness. 00:12:05.09\00:12:08.06 Religious liberty is just a principle 00:12:08.09\00:12:10.83 unless it's expressed in openness 00:12:10.86\00:12:12.69 and ongoing dialogue, and reorganization, 00:12:12.73\00:12:16.97 restructuring is absolutely not only necessary, 00:12:17.00\00:12:21.07 it's what our world is engaged in. 00:12:21.10\00:12:24.51 Tennyson, the poet Tennyson said once in one of his poems, 00:12:24.54\00:12:28.38 the old order changeth. 00:12:28.41\00:12:30.51 There is no question that 00:12:30.55\00:12:32.35 as the Bible predicted so long ago, 00:12:32.38\00:12:34.88 we are now living through a time of radical change. 00:12:34.92\00:12:38.35 Everything is up for grabs, 00:12:38.39\00:12:40.46 including the array of civil liberties 00:12:40.49\00:12:43.66 that the West is so cherished. 00:12:43.69\00:12:46.13 It's up to us, with faith convictions, 00:12:46.16\00:12:48.90 to speak out, reorganize our lives, 00:12:48.93\00:12:52.43 reorganize our priorities, 00:12:52.47\00:12:54.24 and be so focused on sharing, witnessing, 00:12:54.27\00:12:58.57 and the principles of eternal liberty 00:12:58.61\00:13:00.98 that they are unstoppable. 00:13:01.01\00:13:04.21 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:13:04.25\00:13:07.18
