Welcome to Liberty Insider. 00:00:26.39\00:00:28.89 This is a regular program bringing you information, 00:00:28.92\00:00:32.99 insights, discussion, 00:00:33.03\00:00:35.26 and analysis of religious liberty 00:00:35.30\00:00:37.37 events in the United States of course but around the world. 00:00:37.40\00:00:41.57 My name is Lincoln Steed, editor of Liberty Magazine, 00:00:41.60\00:00:44.61 and my guest on this program is Amjad Waryam Alam, 00:00:44.64\00:00:48.44 pronounced badly but I hope close enough. 00:00:48.48\00:00:50.05 No, good to see you're doing fine. 00:00:50.08\00:00:52.05 You did a good job now. 00:00:52.08\00:00:54.15 You know, you're many faceted individual. 00:00:54.18\00:00:58.05 You minister, an evangelist, a singer, 00:00:58.09\00:01:04.26 and a literature evangelist, 00:01:04.29\00:01:05.63 someone who has great experience 00:01:05.66\00:01:07.96 as a dedicated Christian, 00:01:08.00\00:01:09.46 selling Christian related materials door-to-door 00:01:09.50\00:01:14.30 in at least two countries I know in Thailand 00:01:14.34\00:01:17.51 and now in the United States. 00:01:17.54\00:01:20.18 What did you discover in Thailand 00:01:20.21\00:01:22.81 when you were contacting the communities 00:01:22.84\00:01:24.98 because, you know, Thailand like many countries is 00:01:25.01\00:01:27.28 a majority religious group 00:01:27.32\00:01:29.25 and in Thailand it's Buddhist, 00:01:29.28\00:01:33.89 I'm sure, right? 00:01:33.92\00:01:35.26 Thailand, yeah, it's a Buddhist country. 00:01:35.29\00:01:36.93 So how did you find the receptivity 00:01:36.96\00:01:39.63 for another religious viewpoint? 00:01:39.66\00:01:41.10 Of course Christianity but it could have been any other. 00:01:41.13\00:01:45.70 You know, religious liberty argues 00:01:45.73\00:01:47.40 that you should have perfect freedom on that 00:01:47.44\00:01:49.17 but social realities mean that they were hurdles. 00:01:49.20\00:01:51.94 How would you deal with that? 00:01:51.97\00:01:53.81 I think when those years I was there I felt 00:01:53.84\00:01:56.98 that the Buddhist people are very open, 00:01:57.01\00:02:00.85 I felt that they were open to listen. 00:02:00.88\00:02:02.95 Only thing when I had a challenge 00:02:02.98\00:02:05.02 was the language barrier. 00:02:05.05\00:02:06.79 See English is not there, 00:02:06.82\00:02:08.82 you know that English connects too many countries 00:02:08.86\00:02:11.43 and many people, you know. 00:02:11.46\00:02:13.43 Thailand had Thai language and the Thai people are, 00:02:13.46\00:02:18.00 they work in their own language. 00:02:18.03\00:02:21.07 You had trouble picking up Thai? 00:02:21.10\00:02:22.80 Yeah, we do have. 00:02:22.84\00:02:24.17 I learned little bit, you know, 00:02:24.21\00:02:26.04 to get by and also to introduce our books, 00:02:26.07\00:02:29.24 our publications, you know, to canvass them and, 00:02:29.28\00:02:34.48 but the problems were not there. 00:02:34.52\00:02:37.15 There was no problem approaching them 00:02:37.19\00:02:39.32 and I went to some of the churches, 00:02:39.35\00:02:42.22 some of the businesses, some of the, 00:02:42.26\00:02:44.73 like local event on the street. 00:02:44.76\00:02:46.49 Now where were you based when you were there? 00:02:46.53\00:02:48.56 I was in Thailand Mission 00:02:48.60\00:02:50.10 for Seventh-day Adventist headquarter 00:02:50.13\00:02:51.73 like in Thai, Bangkok. 00:02:51.77\00:02:53.54 Oh, Bangkok, that's what I was thinking. 00:02:53.57\00:02:55.97 Now, I know Bangkok fairly well, 00:02:56.00\00:02:57.34 I've been there maybe half dozen times. 00:02:57.37\00:02:59.27 And I think Thailand... Beautiful, big modern city. 00:02:59.31\00:03:02.11 It is. Vibrant alive. 00:03:02.14\00:03:03.58 Oh, beautiful landscaping and people. 00:03:03.61\00:03:06.35 They have grown over the period, you know, 00:03:06.38\00:03:08.18 they have grown a lot. 00:03:08.22\00:03:09.78 And even I see 00:03:09.82\00:03:11.22 Seventh-day Adventist church is grown there. 00:03:11.25\00:03:14.36 And I was a publishing, 00:03:14.39\00:03:16.09 before I became a publishing director 00:03:16.12\00:03:18.73 I was a colporteur. 00:03:18.76\00:03:20.36 I used to go and... 00:03:20.40\00:03:22.56 Books salesman or door-to-door. 00:03:22.60\00:03:24.37 Yeah door-to-door. 00:03:24.40\00:03:25.90 Our first approach used to be a health one 00:03:25.93\00:03:28.00 and then we end up in introducing Bible stories, 00:03:28.04\00:03:32.17 children books, or adults or Steps to Christ, 00:03:32.21\00:03:35.08 and Great Controversy. 00:03:35.11\00:03:37.11 I imagine even I touch some of the schools, you know, 00:03:37.15\00:03:39.68 and sold Great Controversy, you know, to many of them. 00:03:39.71\00:03:44.65 So you say, you found no resistance 00:03:44.69\00:03:46.79 to Great Controversy. 00:03:46.82\00:03:48.16 There were some places but it was not bad. 00:03:48.19\00:03:52.09 It was okay. 00:03:52.13\00:03:53.46 The good advantage could have been better 00:03:53.50\00:03:57.07 if I would have known the language 00:03:57.10\00:03:58.53 but it takes time, you know. 00:03:58.57\00:04:00.44 Did you find in Thailand a general knowledge 00:04:00.47\00:04:04.54 of the larger world, where they, 00:04:04.57\00:04:07.48 like Great Controversy even have an interest 00:04:07.51\00:04:10.21 that it implies that you're curious 00:04:10.25\00:04:11.58 about the history of religion in the western world? 00:04:11.61\00:04:16.28 I see one thing for sure, 00:04:16.32\00:04:17.92 you know whoever get to provisional 00:04:17.95\00:04:20.56 if they have just understood the idea and also the, 00:04:20.59\00:04:26.76 that they become Christians and they become, you know, 00:04:26.80\00:04:32.63 very good follower of Jesus Christ. 00:04:32.67\00:04:35.84 And one thing is another thing I found that the challenge 00:04:35.87\00:04:40.71 they have is the religion of course. 00:04:40.74\00:04:42.58 The sensitivity is there. 00:04:42.61\00:04:44.35 The Buddhist people are very strong in their religion too. 00:04:44.38\00:04:48.82 But it's still the Christianity when they see it, 00:04:48.85\00:04:55.06 it is very different than other places. 00:04:55.09\00:05:00.06 But one important factor I want to bring them. 00:05:00.10\00:05:03.16 The Buddhist people believe in the education system 00:05:03.20\00:05:07.34 what we Seventh-day Adventist have. 00:05:07.37\00:05:09.24 Our schools are full of Buddhist students. 00:05:09.27\00:05:12.91 We have a combined international school. 00:05:12.94\00:05:15.14 Do you think it's connected to Buddhism 00:05:15.18\00:05:17.05 or what is it a national attitude 00:05:17.08\00:05:19.61 that they expect quite away? 00:05:19.65\00:05:23.55 Like religion wise? 00:05:23.59\00:05:26.96 Well, let me tell you what you triggered in my mind. 00:05:26.99\00:05:30.46 Most westerners are familiar 00:05:30.49\00:05:32.66 with what became a movie the King and I. 00:05:32.69\00:05:36.03 Yeah. 00:05:36.06\00:05:37.40 And it's sort of a character, 00:05:37.43\00:05:38.77 but they don't generally realize 00:05:38.80\00:05:40.14 that was based on a real king 00:05:40.17\00:05:41.87 and I wish I could remember his name 00:05:41.90\00:05:44.14 back about 100 years ago. 00:05:44.17\00:05:46.91 And this was at the period when the imperial powers 00:05:46.94\00:05:49.94 were pushing against other, you know, particularly in Asia, 00:05:49.98\00:05:54.32 other independent countries that they overwhelmed. 00:05:54.35\00:05:57.09 But Thailand was never colonized... 00:05:57.12\00:05:59.65 Yeah. 00:05:59.69\00:06:01.02 And the major reason was that the king 00:06:01.06\00:06:03.19 and I think others around him 00:06:03.22\00:06:04.56 but then particular that king celebrated in 00:06:04.59\00:06:06.26 that musical recognized the value of education 00:06:06.29\00:06:10.13 for all of his people. 00:06:10.17\00:06:12.30 His leadership was good. Right. 00:06:12.33\00:06:14.20 And I think he laid the foundation 00:06:14.24\00:06:18.01 for very progressive society today, 00:06:18.04\00:06:21.41 whether it derived just from that 00:06:21.44\00:06:23.81 because I know that was his view. 00:06:23.85\00:06:25.55 You're right because his leadership was, 00:06:25.58\00:06:28.62 he promoted education, he promoted education. 00:06:28.65\00:06:31.05 But did it wasn't because of him personally 00:06:31.09\00:06:33.46 or was that already part of the mindset of Buddhism. 00:06:33.49\00:06:38.56 I don't think so 00:06:38.59\00:06:39.93 but it's an interesting connection. 00:06:39.96\00:06:42.36 They're opened to Christianity, they're open to other religion 00:06:42.40\00:06:46.03 but the reason is this 00:06:46.07\00:06:47.40 that there are lot of western tourist school. 00:06:47.44\00:06:50.77 That's a tourist place. 00:06:50.81\00:06:52.37 I feel, you know that people go for holidays. 00:06:52.41\00:06:56.88 Their tourist industry is very, very strong, you know, 00:06:56.91\00:06:59.91 there're people like I have seen planes full of white 00:06:59.95\00:07:04.69 and other people, you know, coming in the country, 00:07:04.72\00:07:07.99 and then they speak English. 00:07:08.02\00:07:09.79 You know, that English is 00:07:09.82\00:07:11.36 and they want to, you know, learn. 00:07:11.39\00:07:15.30 It's an interesting country though 00:07:15.33\00:07:16.67 because very few people I think have a strategic view 00:07:16.70\00:07:22.14 where other countries are. 00:07:22.17\00:07:23.51 But Thailand sits just below Vietnam and for years 00:07:23.54\00:07:27.71 there was a bloody war that the US was involved 00:07:27.74\00:07:31.08 with millions of people killed. 00:07:31.11\00:07:32.45 It's right on the border with Thailand 00:07:32.48\00:07:33.82 remains stable and open. 00:07:33.85\00:07:35.75 On the other side Myanmar 00:07:35.78\00:07:39.55 where there was a very oppressive system. 00:07:39.59\00:07:44.99 Not very religious but it was down on all religions 00:07:45.03\00:07:48.36 but where today 00:07:48.40\00:07:49.73 there's persecution of the Rohingyas, 00:07:49.76\00:07:53.70 a Muslim minority in Myanmar. 00:07:53.74\00:07:58.14 So there's intolerance, military regime there, 00:07:58.17\00:08:02.14 it continued all around. 00:08:02.18\00:08:03.98 And ongoing war and yet Thailand 00:08:04.01\00:08:05.58 was this cultural island of bliss 00:08:05.61\00:08:08.78 and modernity and openness. 00:08:08.82\00:08:11.05 Openness is that, I think they always wanted to grow. 00:08:11.09\00:08:15.09 You know, they wanted to build this country. 00:08:15.12\00:08:17.29 They wanted to always take it to the highest level of, 00:08:17.33\00:08:20.60 you know, and they wanted to grow their economy, 00:08:20.63\00:08:22.56 you know, that time. 00:08:22.60\00:08:23.93 And it helped. 00:08:23.97\00:08:25.30 You know, they welcome people from all over the world 00:08:25.33\00:08:27.54 to come in Thailand and work. 00:08:27.57\00:08:29.60 There are many, many foreigners and many nationality 00:08:29.64\00:08:32.84 you'll find in there. 00:08:32.87\00:08:34.21 And that gives us lot of opportunity 00:08:34.24\00:08:36.88 to sell them books, you know, give literature evangelism 00:08:36.91\00:08:40.22 and, that's why we have our churches there too 00:08:40.25\00:08:43.28 and they are grown, you know. 00:08:43.32\00:08:45.15 So you had a good experience even though 00:08:45.19\00:08:46.96 there was a language barrier. 00:08:46.99\00:08:48.52 Going door to door... Oh, yeah. 00:08:48.56\00:08:49.89 ..and you didn't see overt religious conflict, 00:08:49.92\00:08:55.46 religious liberty was functioning quite well. 00:08:55.50\00:08:57.57 No, no, no there was no much problem 00:08:57.60\00:08:59.43 and even we had in fact we have a hospital. 00:08:59.47\00:09:03.20 People are actually, you know, believe in seven day. 00:09:03.24\00:09:07.11 Many places even in Pakistan and in Thailand, 00:09:07.14\00:09:10.51 that in seven day they will be healed. 00:09:10.55\00:09:13.11 They do not understand 00:09:13.15\00:09:14.48 what is Seventh-day Adventist means. 00:09:14.52\00:09:17.29 You know, but they say if they come to the hospital 00:09:17.32\00:09:20.06 seven day is the last day. 00:09:20.09\00:09:21.79 Well, that is a good model. 00:09:21.82\00:09:23.32 Remember Jesus went around healing people 00:09:23.36\00:09:25.43 and then He taught them. 00:09:25.46\00:09:26.86 You know... 00:09:26.90\00:09:28.23 We've got to take care of people's immediate needs. 00:09:28.26\00:09:30.07 There's no good saying 00:09:30.10\00:09:31.43 God loves you in all the aspect. 00:09:31.47\00:09:32.80 You know, continue to heavy diseases and live badly 00:09:32.83\00:09:36.60 and that we don't care a long as accept, 00:09:36.64\00:09:38.51 of course it's a holistic approach. 00:09:38.54\00:09:41.04 Yeah, that's one thing is we say 00:09:41.08\00:09:43.71 that our approach to health 00:09:43.75\00:09:50.29 is a very good approach 00:09:50.32\00:09:51.65 because some health publications 00:09:51.69\00:09:54.62 and our hospitals and our clinics, you know, 00:09:54.66\00:09:58.09 those give lot of opportunity for us to touch the people 00:09:58.13\00:10:02.93 or touch the heart of people for the love of Jesus, 00:10:02.96\00:10:06.63 you know, he has shown us. 00:10:06.67\00:10:08.27 Now I don't know 00:10:08.30\00:10:10.04 if you remember not very long ago, 00:10:10.07\00:10:12.41 long term king of Thailand, was it Bhumibol? 00:10:12.44\00:10:17.65 Think that was his name. 00:10:17.68\00:10:19.01 He died. 00:10:19.05\00:10:20.38 Yeah, he just not long ago recently. 00:10:20.42\00:10:22.68 Few months. 00:10:22.72\00:10:24.05 He was a good king. Yes. 00:10:24.09\00:10:25.99 It always struck me that the reverence the Thai 00:10:26.02\00:10:30.43 showed to their king was pretty much like a religion. 00:10:30.46\00:10:33.33 He was connected to the people. 00:10:33.36\00:10:35.20 He was in their heart, you know, 00:10:35.23\00:10:36.67 that and this is the reason they have lot of respect 00:10:36.70\00:10:41.77 for their leader and for their king. 00:10:41.80\00:10:43.91 And you never came across, we know the reason why you 00:10:43.94\00:10:48.14 or anyone in your role would criticize the king 00:10:48.18\00:10:50.38 but we were aware that was a total no, no 00:10:50.41\00:10:53.62 if you appeared to malign the royal family, 00:10:53.65\00:10:57.12 whatever bad things would happen. 00:10:57.15\00:10:59.22 No, not in generally. 00:10:59.25\00:11:00.92 But, you know, it's still a country. 00:11:00.96\00:11:02.92 Little bit things happen anywhere and... 00:11:02.96\00:11:05.99 They may have a little bit of a constitutional crisis 00:11:06.03\00:11:08.46 with the Prime Minister Thaksin, 00:11:08.50\00:11:11.03 I think who was involved in some nefarious dealings 00:11:11.07\00:11:16.24 but still it's a very stable country. 00:11:16.27\00:11:18.77 There was a trouble in the government 00:11:18.81\00:11:20.41 and a lot of things changed, you know, they also had their, 00:11:20.44\00:11:23.68 you know, problems which also took the country down 00:11:23.71\00:11:29.12 but they are still coming up and but things happen. 00:11:29.15\00:11:32.49 You know, it's as other countries. 00:11:32.52\00:11:34.26 Oh, yeah. 00:11:34.29\00:11:35.62 The world is the dynamic place, nothing is static. 00:11:35.66\00:11:36.99 Yeah, nothing is static. 00:11:37.03\00:11:38.36 But I think good underlying characteristics 00:11:38.39\00:11:41.00 of government organization and of religious attitudes 00:11:41.03\00:11:44.37 they will continue through the dislocations of the moment. 00:11:44.40\00:11:49.50 One thing is as I say again and again one thing, 00:11:49.54\00:11:53.07 one thing because all other things are happening. 00:11:53.11\00:11:56.68 They are very respectful, you know, 00:11:56.71\00:11:59.21 that whenever you go meet people, 00:11:59.25\00:12:01.48 they say sa-wat-dii kha they join their hands 00:12:01.52\00:12:03.65 and they will give you lot of respect 00:12:03.69\00:12:06.35 and they show humbleness that's what I saw. 00:12:06.39\00:12:11.16 Yeah, good. 00:12:11.19\00:12:13.23 And that gives us a chance to talk to them 00:12:13.26\00:12:15.40 and to push them and tell what we wanted to tell. 00:12:15.43\00:12:19.83 Yeah. 00:12:19.87\00:12:21.20 Did you... 00:12:21.24\00:12:22.57 I know you're a singing evangelist, 00:12:22.60\00:12:23.94 you didn't sing in Thailand, did you? 00:12:23.97\00:12:25.87 Singing, no in Thailand because mostly 00:12:25.91\00:12:29.41 as I said people speak Thai language 00:12:29.44\00:12:31.71 and my Thai was very little. 00:12:31.75\00:12:36.22 But I'm sure you could order a good meal 00:12:36.25\00:12:37.92 in the restaurant there? 00:12:37.95\00:12:39.29 Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. 00:12:39.32\00:12:40.66 Sure, sure. 00:12:40.69\00:12:42.02 I love Thai food. 00:12:42.06\00:12:43.39 Stay with us, we'll take a short break now 00:12:43.43\00:12:44.76 and after that we'll be back further with Amjad 00:12:44.79\00:12:48.53 to discuss religious liberty in his personal experience. 00:12:48.56\00:12:52.57 Thank you so much. 00:12:52.60\00:12:53.94
