Welcome back from our break. 00:00:05.13\00:00:07.20 Before the break, 00:00:07.24\00:00:08.57 I was talking and enjoying the discussion with Amjad Alam. 00:00:08.60\00:00:15.04 I've been to your homeland of Pakistan, 00:00:15.08\00:00:17.48 but it's been a while, 00:00:17.51\00:00:19.65 and it's refreshing to hear what you're doing there 00:00:19.68\00:00:22.32 in witnessing to your faith, 00:00:22.35\00:00:23.89 in a way that's non-confrontational 00:00:23.92\00:00:26.29 that fulfils the chart of the wheel 00:00:26.32\00:00:29.22 have on religious liberty 00:00:29.26\00:00:30.59 to respect other people's faith. 00:00:30.63\00:00:32.39 But as a Christian, or if you're a Muslim, 00:00:32.43\00:00:35.46 whatever I'm sure it applies, but as a Christian, 00:00:35.50\00:00:37.73 we're under personal obligation to share our faith. 00:00:37.77\00:00:41.50 No religious faith is a private, 00:00:41.54\00:00:43.57 personal, introspective thing or shouldn't be. 00:00:43.61\00:00:45.27 Yeah. 00:00:45.31\00:00:48.24 And I'm encouraged the way 00:00:48.28\00:00:49.61 that you've been able to freely, 00:00:49.64\00:00:50.98 and openly, and naturally share. 00:00:51.01\00:00:54.28 And your experience has been that in that environment 00:00:54.32\00:00:57.59 you don't see opposition because what are they opposing, 00:00:57.62\00:01:01.82 a fellow human being who believes in something. 00:01:01.86\00:01:04.06 One thing is for sure, you see, 00:01:04.09\00:01:06.13 I just came to America, not long ago, 00:01:06.16\00:01:08.66 but thing is this that originally, 00:01:08.70\00:01:11.13 I'm from Pakistan, if you see. 00:01:11.17\00:01:13.23 Well, I know the language, I know the culture, 00:01:13.27\00:01:16.14 and we know, we've been, we lived there. 00:01:16.17\00:01:19.34 My parents lived here, 00:01:19.37\00:01:20.91 and our forefathers lived here, you know. 00:01:20.94\00:01:22.94 And we know the culture and there was a time 00:01:22.98\00:01:25.75 because everybody was together with no problem. 00:01:25.78\00:01:28.72 And we did not know who is who, you know, 00:01:28.75\00:01:31.29 but now still, you know, 00:01:31.32\00:01:33.36 I feel like that there a lot can be done, 00:01:33.39\00:01:36.26 you know, that people like Christians, 00:01:36.29\00:01:39.63 Even I see the employers, you know, that sometime they, 00:01:39.66\00:01:43.13 they want to have a Christian employees, 00:01:43.16\00:01:45.17 you know. 00:01:45.20\00:01:46.53 And someplace we have challenges, 00:01:46.57\00:01:47.90 we don't get a job. 00:01:47.94\00:01:49.54 It's all different situation, time... 00:01:49.57\00:01:51.77 And you know that's... And place too, you know... 00:01:51.81\00:01:53.31 A certain level of that is to be expected 00:01:53.34\00:01:55.71 because humans have... 00:01:55.74\00:01:57.28 many humans have their own attitudes and prejudices, 00:01:57.31\00:02:00.22 hopefully not that rise to the level of persecution, 00:02:00.25\00:02:03.79 but people make choices. 00:02:03.82\00:02:05.55 Even in the US, 00:02:05.59\00:02:07.22 with freedom of religion and so on, 00:02:07.26\00:02:09.22 you're going to find, you get a job 00:02:09.26\00:02:11.76 when someone is not at all religiously inclined. 00:02:11.79\00:02:14.06 They may see you as just not the type of person 00:02:14.10\00:02:17.53 they want to hire. 00:02:17.57\00:02:19.67 It's not religious prejudice, 00:02:19.70\00:02:21.04 but you're not on their wavelength. 00:02:21.07\00:02:22.60 And I'm sure even in the ideal situation 00:02:22.64\00:02:25.51 that you're reaching toward, it's never gonna be perfect. 00:02:25.54\00:02:29.11 People judge things a little differently. 00:02:29.14\00:02:31.48 Yeah, but let me just tell you, 00:02:31.51\00:02:32.85 I was in Pakistan about two years ago, 00:02:32.88\00:02:36.48 and in the midnight like 12 o'clock, 00:02:36.52\00:02:38.82 I was just going with my friend, 00:02:38.85\00:02:41.02 and my actually assistant and he was, 00:02:41.06\00:02:43.79 we both were going 00:02:43.83\00:02:45.16 and I have one of my relative and the baby in the car. 00:02:45.19\00:02:48.20 And, you know, I was, 00:02:48.23\00:02:50.37 a couple of people came on a motorcycle and, you know, 00:02:50.40\00:02:53.80 we thought they need help. 00:02:53.84\00:02:55.80 What happened, 00:02:55.84\00:02:57.37 all of a sudden as we stopped the car, 00:02:57.41\00:02:58.87 they point gun to us, and those were, 00:02:58.91\00:03:02.98 those things are not with only Christians, 00:03:03.01\00:03:05.38 but can be with a Muslim. 00:03:05.41\00:03:06.75 Did they just pointed the gun and moved on? 00:03:06.78\00:03:08.12 It can be with Muslims too, you know. 00:03:08.15\00:03:09.48 It can be because in the middle one, 00:03:09.52\00:03:10.85 they're looking for money, 00:03:10.89\00:03:12.22 they're looking for some other 00:03:12.25\00:03:13.59 than they can damage you if you don't. 00:03:13.62\00:03:16.26 They want everything, you know. 00:03:16.29\00:03:17.63 I think their poverty and there are challenges 00:03:17.66\00:03:20.40 of their problems are there today. 00:03:20.43\00:03:22.73 Well, it's an interesting interjection that you gave 00:03:22.76\00:03:26.13 and people should remember that. 00:03:26.17\00:03:29.00 You say that the laws 00:03:29.04\00:03:31.51 there are not particularly biased against any faith, 00:03:31.54\00:03:34.58 but the society has issues. 00:03:34.61\00:03:36.78 The society has issues. 00:03:36.81\00:03:38.15 Now poverty or economic distress 00:03:38.18\00:03:42.48 will bring out inherent problems. 00:03:42.52\00:03:45.69 And clearly the US has a constitutional advantage 00:03:45.72\00:03:48.72 over many countries. 00:03:48.76\00:03:50.09 We have a tradition of accommodation, 00:03:50.13\00:03:52.89 not just tolerance, but freedom from all religions. 00:03:52.93\00:03:56.16 But in times of economic distress, 00:03:56.20\00:03:59.40 like the great depression or even 2008, 00:03:59.43\00:04:02.60 there was a sample of it, but in the future, 00:04:02.64\00:04:04.57 there's bound to be drops, 00:04:04.61\00:04:06.21 you can expect these underlying prejudices, 00:04:06.24\00:04:09.54 tensions, even criminality, 00:04:09.58\00:04:14.18 gangsters and that, that will increase. 00:04:14.22\00:04:16.45 And we should be a little bit understanding of Pakistan 00:04:16.48\00:04:18.82 and other countries. 00:04:18.85\00:04:20.19 It's not just that 00:04:20.22\00:04:21.86 they are more religiously prejudice 00:04:21.89\00:04:23.83 say than another country. 00:04:23.86\00:04:25.33 The society is under deep stress that brings out 00:04:25.36\00:04:29.43 what is inherent and may exist here in the US just as much, 00:04:29.46\00:04:34.00 but it's not manifesting 00:04:34.04\00:04:35.37 because the stress is not there. 00:04:35.40\00:04:37.24 Yeah, as you said that society has a lot of challenges, 00:04:37.27\00:04:40.44 you know, that we're facing. 00:04:40.48\00:04:42.18 And, of course, 00:04:42.21\00:04:43.91 as mentioned in the earlier program also, 00:04:43.95\00:04:46.98 its literacy rate is also important. 00:04:47.02\00:04:49.42 When people are educated, they have education, 00:04:49.45\00:04:53.39 the things can be very different. 00:04:53.42\00:04:55.16 Well, the literacy rate, 00:04:55.19\00:04:56.52 I think is directly tied 00:04:56.56\00:04:57.89 to the advancement of spiritual truth. 00:04:57.93\00:04:59.96 It is. 00:05:00.00\00:05:01.33 Now, this year, 00:05:01.36\00:05:03.37 I'm sure this program is going to be shown this year in 2017. 00:05:03.40\00:05:07.34 This is the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, 00:05:07.37\00:05:10.81 Protestant Reformation. 00:05:10.84\00:05:12.21 It's worth remembering 00:05:12.24\00:05:13.58 that the Reformation was inextricably connected 00:05:13.61\00:05:16.34 to the development of printing 00:05:16.38\00:05:18.11 and the distribution of books generally 00:05:18.15\00:05:20.55 and Bibles in particular. 00:05:20.58\00:05:22.28 I read the other day that as the Luther's descent rose, 00:05:22.32\00:05:27.22 in that context they were already over 00:05:27.26\00:05:29.16 30 million books in Europe 00:05:29.19\00:05:30.96 and they weren't that many people in Europe back then. 00:05:30.99\00:05:34.13 Thirty million and most of those Bibles. 00:05:34.16\00:05:36.70 That's what caused the blossoming 00:05:36.73\00:05:39.80 of an independent religious spirit. 00:05:39.83\00:05:41.94 And I believe in Pakistan or any other country 00:05:41.97\00:05:44.44 where the literacy rate is lagging a bit, 00:05:44.47\00:05:46.81 when it rises and people start reading, 00:05:46.84\00:05:49.94 incredible things will happen to the society, 00:05:49.98\00:05:52.11 and the governance, and to religious expression. 00:05:52.15\00:05:54.75 It makes a huge lot of difference, you know, that, 00:05:54.78\00:05:57.52 see when we come here, we learn a lot of new things, 00:05:57.55\00:06:00.56 you know, that and if we go then back in Pakistan, 00:06:00.59\00:06:03.22 we literally see some people are still the same. 00:06:03.26\00:06:06.76 I think the opportunities are less for many people 00:06:06.80\00:06:10.00 and like nowadays this is a reason 00:06:10.03\00:06:12.97 we started from God of Life International Ministry, 00:06:13.00\00:06:15.74 we started to educate people, you know, 00:06:15.77\00:06:18.37 we started academic classes from. 00:06:18.41\00:06:20.64 And even for adult, you know, literacy classes, we started, 00:06:20.68\00:06:24.38 so we, they can learn to read Bible, 00:06:24.41\00:06:26.31 they can open, you know. 00:06:26.35\00:06:28.22 And have you found the general community 00:06:28.25\00:06:30.82 including obviously mostly Muslims? 00:06:30.85\00:06:33.19 Are they comfortable with this emphasis on literacy per se? 00:06:33.22\00:06:38.29 Yeah. 00:06:38.33\00:06:39.66 We didn't have any problem so far 00:06:39.69\00:06:41.50 and even some Muslim women came to our center 00:06:41.53\00:06:45.93 and they just also learned sewing 00:06:45.97\00:06:48.67 and, you know, skills, you know, training 00:06:48.70\00:06:51.61 and we issue them certificate 00:06:51.64\00:06:54.01 and they just go and find a job. 00:06:54.04\00:06:56.04 I think you're doing a great service in there. 00:06:56.08\00:06:58.01 One thing I remember in Pakistan, 00:06:58.05\00:06:59.71 and I saw it in India too. 00:06:59.75\00:07:02.22 Where in little dark rooms, 00:07:02.25\00:07:07.32 I remember one in particular, 00:07:07.36\00:07:08.69 I don't think there was a window in the room, 00:07:08.72\00:07:10.59 and there were maybe 50, 60 young boys, 00:07:10.63\00:07:13.46 they're pre-teen boys, 00:07:13.50\00:07:15.50 all sitting, they couldn't read. 00:07:15.53\00:07:17.83 And a religious leader upfront 00:07:17.87\00:07:20.40 was interning the Quran all day. 00:07:20.44\00:07:23.41 He'd sing out a line 00:07:23.44\00:07:24.77 and they would yell, they would yell it back 00:07:24.81\00:07:26.21 and they were memorizing the Quran. 00:07:26.24\00:07:28.04 They couldn't read, 00:07:28.08\00:07:29.48 they knew nothing about the outside world, 00:07:29.51\00:07:31.75 and here they're going over and over the Quran. 00:07:31.78\00:07:34.02 Now, it's not for me to say, 00:07:34.05\00:07:35.58 in fact, they would not welcome me to say 00:07:35.62\00:07:36.99 the Quran is a wrong book or whatever, 00:07:37.02\00:07:39.29 but let's just say with the Bible. 00:07:39.32\00:07:41.19 I would still think it would be trouble problematic, 00:07:41.22\00:07:43.46 you're not teaching literacy, 00:07:43.49\00:07:45.06 you're droning this holy word into their minds 00:07:45.09\00:07:49.46 and then we wonder why these uneducated 00:07:49.50\00:07:52.63 perhaps even undernourished young boys 00:07:52.67\00:07:56.04 can't think straight. 00:07:56.07\00:07:57.44 Their mind is addled by religious imagery 00:07:57.47\00:08:00.11 that even if it were correct at the base, 00:08:00.14\00:08:02.41 it's just now tangled up 00:08:02.44\00:08:03.95 and swirling around in their brain. 00:08:03.98\00:08:06.38 You know, even within the Christian community, 00:08:06.41\00:08:08.12 I get letters on religious liberty 00:08:08.15\00:08:09.85 from people who clearly are poorly educated, 00:08:09.88\00:08:12.55 and they read and read even the Bible, 00:08:12.59\00:08:15.16 but they don't understand it, 00:08:15.19\00:08:16.52 you can hardly read the pages 00:08:16.56\00:08:17.89 all jumbled this and that at the other end. 00:08:17.93\00:08:19.89 And I think that a great disservice 00:08:19.93\00:08:21.80 has been done to young Pakistani, 00:08:21.83\00:08:24.23 the younger generation by this sort of rote learning 00:08:24.27\00:08:29.37 but neglecting to educate them. 00:08:29.40\00:08:32.07 Education, you know, that is very, very important, 00:08:32.11\00:08:35.48 and as you were mentioning, you know, before something, 00:08:35.51\00:08:39.95 you know, that young children, actually that's again, 00:08:39.98\00:08:43.52 I say that is very sensitive, 00:08:43.55\00:08:45.19 you know, it's their religion, you know. 00:08:45.22\00:08:46.99 Oh, I understand. 00:08:47.02\00:08:48.36 I'm trying to do it on a... 00:08:48.39\00:08:49.99 explain it on a rational non-religious level per se. 00:08:50.03\00:08:53.26 So this is from the years and years... 00:08:53.29\00:08:55.13 It would be just as dangerous to do that 00:08:55.16\00:08:56.50 if it were Christianity or Buddhism. 00:08:56.53\00:08:59.10 It's not that it's Islam, but in this Islamic country, 00:08:59.13\00:09:02.67 they are neglecting education while just forcing in, 00:09:02.70\00:09:07.28 you know what, 00:09:07.31\00:09:08.64 a tumbled version of their own faith. 00:09:08.68\00:09:10.08 It's not helping them. 00:09:10.11\00:09:11.45 But one thing for sure, 00:09:11.48\00:09:12.91 let me just tell you that they are at least teaching 00:09:12.95\00:09:16.08 and there are people learning 00:09:16.12\00:09:17.92 for our problems are even different. 00:09:17.95\00:09:20.32 It gets even worse. We even. 00:09:20.36\00:09:21.69 We have Bible, we don't read. 00:09:21.72\00:09:23.19 Well, that's true, yes, absolutely... 00:09:23.22\00:09:24.56 And many, you know, we don't do our part. 00:09:24.59\00:09:27.16 You know, at least they are responding saying that 00:09:27.20\00:09:30.33 what they teach they're respectful to that 00:09:30.37\00:09:33.07 and they are doing it, you know. 00:09:33.10\00:09:35.07 We need to even, I think change and show 00:09:35.10\00:09:37.54 and demonstrate that we read, you know, our book, you know... 00:09:37.57\00:09:42.14 And the Bible to be fair and work against 00:09:42.18\00:09:45.71 even what I said, you know, the Bible says that 00:09:45.75\00:09:48.05 there's a phenomenon of ever learning 00:09:48.08\00:09:49.75 but never arriving at the truth. 00:09:49.78\00:09:52.09 We have to approach all learning 00:09:52.12\00:09:53.49 and spiritual learning in particular 00:09:53.52\00:09:55.69 with the right frame of mind. 00:09:55.72\00:09:59.09 But I do believe that general literacy 00:09:59.13\00:10:01.36 is the friend of spiritual commitment. 00:10:01.40\00:10:03.33 Sure, even adult in Pakistan, even Christians, you know, 00:10:03.37\00:10:07.20 you know, they know the Bible verses by heart, 00:10:07.24\00:10:10.07 but they don't know how to read, you know. 00:10:10.11\00:10:11.71 My dad was uneducated person, but he knows only to sign, 00:10:11.74\00:10:16.54 but he knows the Bible. 00:10:16.58\00:10:18.01 You know, by learning by heart. 00:10:18.05\00:10:19.48 My mother knew about this, but they cannot read, 00:10:19.51\00:10:21.72 but this is a, this is... 00:10:21.75\00:10:23.92 Now, were your parents Christians 00:10:23.95\00:10:25.29 all their lives or...? 00:10:25.32\00:10:26.65 Yeah, my parents were Christians, 00:10:26.69\00:10:28.02 and, yeah, but no education. 00:10:28.06\00:10:30.23 No education, no education, 00:10:30.26\00:10:32.33 so what happens is that they learned, 00:10:32.36\00:10:34.66 even they go to church, they pick up, 00:10:34.70\00:10:36.46 you know, that and when they repeat things, 00:10:36.50\00:10:39.67 pastor or other, 00:10:39.70\00:10:41.04 and they learn these verses, you know. 00:10:41.07\00:10:42.87 And they obviously inculcated in you the need 00:10:42.90\00:10:45.54 for more knowledge and more commitment. 00:10:45.57\00:10:47.51 So this is the reason I'm trying to help people 00:10:47.54\00:10:49.51 to get some education and get some training, 00:10:49.54\00:10:52.75 technical and also how they can read their Bible too. 00:10:52.78\00:10:55.72 And I think at the end of the day, 00:10:55.75\00:10:57.45 your evangelistic efforts are so valuable 00:10:57.49\00:11:01.16 because even if people don't automatically 00:11:01.19\00:11:03.96 or routinely accept Christianity. 00:11:03.99\00:11:06.19 You're educating them about your faith. 00:11:06.23\00:11:08.86 Yeah, we are trying our, 00:11:08.90\00:11:11.73 and I'm thankful that 00:11:11.77\00:11:13.84 this opportunity can be given to many, 00:11:13.87\00:11:18.11 many people they can benefit from this, 00:11:18.14\00:11:20.94 and they can be helped, and they can learn 00:11:20.98\00:11:24.18 and also teach others, you know. 00:11:24.21\00:11:26.25 So education is very, very important 00:11:26.28\00:11:28.62 to what we are supporting. 00:11:28.65\00:11:30.92 I have several resolution in life 00:11:30.95\00:11:32.75 and one of them that 00:11:32.79\00:11:34.62 I should have taken care of before this 00:11:34.66\00:11:36.96 summation was what does the word colporteur mean? 00:11:36.99\00:11:40.26 What is its origin? 00:11:40.30\00:11:41.93 I know what it means in practice. 00:11:41.96\00:11:43.70 Most people, for most people it's a nonsensical word, 00:11:43.73\00:11:47.87 but for the Seventh-day Adventist church, 00:11:47.90\00:11:49.40 in its rapid expansion on a global mission, 00:11:49.44\00:11:52.44 a colporteur was a man with a book in hand, 00:11:52.47\00:11:55.68 and a compulsion in his heart went door-to-door, 00:11:55.71\00:11:58.48 sharing his faith. 00:11:58.51\00:11:59.91 And for those that were receptive 00:11:59.95\00:12:01.42 leaving some literature. 00:12:01.45\00:12:03.22 There is no question that that dynamic of a salesman, 00:12:03.25\00:12:07.66 a gospel salesman has the ability to change 00:12:07.69\00:12:11.09 whole societies and bring forth whole companies of believers 00:12:11.13\00:12:15.40 that reality has not changed in my view. 00:12:15.43\00:12:19.13 And in our guest's experience, 00:12:19.17\00:12:21.04 Amjad has found both in his home country 00:12:21.07\00:12:25.84 and then in Thailand. 00:12:25.87\00:12:27.68 As well as that, 00:12:27.71\00:12:29.04 so it's not about in the United States, 00:12:29.08\00:12:31.05 people are receptive to the Word of God 00:12:31.08\00:12:33.85 expressed through the printed word, 00:12:33.88\00:12:35.78 but communicated through personal interaction. 00:12:35.82\00:12:38.95 That is our privilege. 00:12:38.99\00:12:40.56 That is religious liberty in action. 00:12:40.59\00:12:44.63 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:12:44.66\00:12:47.73
