Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:26.49\00:00:28.56 This is a program bringing you discussion, 00:00:28.59\00:00:30.49 news, views, updates, 00:00:30.53\00:00:32.19 and the inside track on religious liberty issues 00:00:32.23\00:00:35.26 in the US and around the world. 00:00:35.30\00:00:37.70 My name is Lincoln Steed, I edit Liberty Magazine, 00:00:37.73\00:00:41.30 a magazine that's now been 00:00:41.34\00:00:43.00 in continuous publication for 111 years. 00:00:43.04\00:00:47.54 And my guest is a very unique individual, 00:00:47.58\00:00:51.35 Amjad Maryam Alam. 00:00:51.38\00:00:54.42 It's Amjad Waryam Alam. 00:00:54.45\00:00:56.99 You said correctively, I thought I had this right. 00:00:57.02\00:00:58.82 But, thank you. That's why I was reading it. 00:00:58.85\00:01:00.92 It's a very unique name, Pakistani name. 00:01:00.96\00:01:02.99 Yeah. 00:01:03.02\00:01:04.39 And I've been impressed talking with you 00:01:04.43\00:01:06.83 on the previous program 00:01:06.86\00:01:08.20 and after I met you on your ministry. 00:01:08.23\00:01:11.40 You know, we live in a very dangerous world. 00:01:11.43\00:01:15.70 A world with all sorts of challenges, particularly, 00:01:15.74\00:01:18.51 on the religious liberty front, and Pakistan, 00:01:18.54\00:01:21.94 where you grew up... 00:01:21.98\00:01:23.65 Yeah, I was born... 00:01:23.68\00:01:25.01 And then moved, 00:01:25.05\00:01:26.38 as you told me on your last story 00:01:26.41\00:01:27.75 from Pakistan to Thailand, 00:01:27.78\00:01:30.65 and then on to the United States 00:01:30.69\00:01:32.02 where you currently live. 00:01:32.05\00:01:33.39 You know, Pakistan is in the news a lot. 00:01:33.42\00:01:37.89 And very often, 00:01:37.93\00:01:39.26 it's because of agitation of a religious nature there. 00:01:39.29\00:01:43.00 How would you character, you know, 00:01:43.03\00:01:45.63 knowing Pakistani history and growing up there 00:01:45.67\00:01:47.97 and seeing its effect on society, 00:01:48.00\00:01:49.84 why is it that religious tensions periodically 00:01:49.87\00:01:54.21 get so out of control in Pakistan? 00:01:54.24\00:01:58.35 I think this is not that officially, 00:01:58.38\00:02:02.95 but this is something personal, you know... 00:02:02.98\00:02:05.02 Well, that's all you can give, only our personal views. 00:02:05.05\00:02:07.26 Yeah, yeah. Personal, you know. 00:02:07.29\00:02:08.99 It's people, you also, you know 00:02:09.02\00:02:10.36 that how the one feel in Pakistan, 00:02:10.39\00:02:12.69 you know, the people living in Pakistan, 00:02:12.73\00:02:15.16 you know, it's about, you know, 00:02:15.20\00:02:17.07 that not like the government is doing something 00:02:17.10\00:02:22.27 is, sometimes sensitivity is there, you know, 00:02:22.30\00:02:26.88 that people if you say 00:02:26.91\00:02:29.44 something bad about for somebody 00:02:29.48\00:02:32.25 or say against something 00:02:32.28\00:02:34.88 they pick those people, you know, 00:02:34.92\00:02:36.62 that other than that there is still, you know, 00:02:36.65\00:02:40.36 that the freedom is there, 00:02:40.39\00:02:42.49 we see, we have our churches 00:02:42.52\00:02:44.13 as I mentioned before in the other program... 00:02:44.16\00:02:46.06 These are Christian churches? 00:02:46.09\00:02:47.43 Yeah, we have... 00:02:47.46\00:02:48.80 Pakistan is overwhelmingly Islam, 00:02:48.83\00:02:50.17 but, of course, there's many minorities, 00:02:50.20\00:02:51.83 both Islamic minorities... Christians are... 00:02:51.87\00:02:53.90 People forget they exist. 00:02:53.94\00:02:55.34 As well as Christians and some other religions. 00:02:55.37\00:02:58.01 There are minorities like Christians, Hindus and Parsis, 00:02:58.04\00:03:01.81 but Christians are about 5%. 00:03:01.84\00:03:06.25 That's what they count officially, you know, that. 00:03:06.28\00:03:08.68 And I feel like there is now it's grown more, you know, 00:03:08.72\00:03:12.89 there are many Christians there, 00:03:12.92\00:03:14.36 and we have many churches. 00:03:14.39\00:03:15.72 We have many denominations, you know, that, 00:03:15.76\00:03:17.79 but Seventh-day Adventist church 00:03:17.83\00:03:19.16 is there too, you know. 00:03:19.19\00:03:20.53 Now, let me ask you a question. 00:03:20.56\00:03:21.90 You probably never would guess, how did they know there are 5%, 00:03:21.93\00:03:25.00 like in the United States, 00:03:25.03\00:03:26.53 they have regular census every several years. 00:03:26.57\00:03:30.07 Do you have a census? Yeah. 00:03:30.11\00:03:31.44 The government has the census and also, you know, 00:03:31.47\00:03:35.18 individually when denominational they do it, 00:03:35.21\00:03:38.31 that and then this, then these census are accounted 00:03:38.35\00:03:41.52 then they figure it out 00:03:41.55\00:03:42.88 how many percentage of Christians are there. 00:03:42.92\00:03:46.22 So you're comfortable that at the government level, 00:03:46.25\00:03:50.96 it's well ordered and not... 00:03:50.99\00:03:53.70 Well, so far there is... apparently dangerous? 00:03:53.73\00:03:55.66 Yeah, it's not because they do not ban anything. 00:03:55.70\00:03:58.13 We still do have a freedom of worship, 00:03:58.17\00:04:01.20 you know, that otherwise 00:04:01.24\00:04:02.57 there would be no churches in Pakistan. 00:04:02.60\00:04:05.61 And there was a time in missionary used to go, 00:04:05.64\00:04:08.24 things have change 00:04:08.28\00:04:09.61 but missionaries are not going as frequent as, 00:04:09.64\00:04:13.95 you know the problems in the past. 00:04:13.98\00:04:16.15 But there was a time missionary did a lot of work, 00:04:16.18\00:04:19.85 even they built the schools, colleges, 00:04:19.89\00:04:24.13 churches and hospitals. 00:04:24.16\00:04:26.43 That's why we have our college in Pakistan 00:04:26.46\00:04:30.43 and we have our hospital 00:04:30.47\00:04:33.34 that's where I work as HR director 00:04:33.37\00:04:35.34 for Karachi Adventist hospital. 00:04:35.37\00:04:37.97 I've never been there. How big is that hospital? 00:04:38.01\00:04:40.04 You're gonna... We have 120 bed hospital. 00:04:40.08\00:04:42.14 Oh, that's a good size, yes. Yeah. 00:04:42.18\00:04:45.58 These challenges, when missionary left, you know, 00:04:45.61\00:04:47.78 that the doctors used to come from abroad, 00:04:47.82\00:04:50.19 the pastors even, 00:04:50.22\00:04:51.59 the teachers we used to have lot of, 00:04:51.62\00:04:54.52 you know, that people those who were helping there 00:04:54.56\00:04:57.69 and some were volunteers, 00:04:57.73\00:04:59.06 some through General Conference and as a missionary. 00:04:59.09\00:05:01.66 Yeah, where our Adventist headquarters is. 00:05:01.70\00:05:04.73 But, now we don't have local people running, 00:05:04.77\00:05:08.74 we don't have... 00:05:08.77\00:05:10.11 I think, yes, Pakistan, like many countries around the world 00:05:10.14\00:05:12.01 as they developed a sense of after World War II, 00:05:12.04\00:05:16.01 a real self identity, 00:05:16.04\00:05:18.78 started limiting outside 00:05:18.81\00:05:22.08 workers/missionaries or whatever. 00:05:22.12\00:05:25.35 I think this is the case, isn't it? 00:05:25.39\00:05:27.16 They want nationals to pick up all the way. 00:05:27.19\00:05:29.89 Now the workings going on by nationals... 00:05:29.92\00:05:33.23 Which is not a bad dynamic. 00:05:33.26\00:05:34.70 Which is actually good, but the thing is this, 00:05:34.73\00:05:37.27 the bad thing I feel like 00:05:37.30\00:05:39.37 they did not train leaders or workers 00:05:39.40\00:05:43.37 to take care it, all of sudden it happen. 00:05:43.41\00:05:46.51 Yeah, that is bad. 00:05:46.54\00:05:47.88 That dropping the quality of work 00:05:47.91\00:05:50.58 and there are a lot of challenges, I should say. 00:05:50.61\00:05:54.68 Yeah, and that's where what you do personally 00:05:54.72\00:05:57.32 can be of great assistance that you continued your studies 00:05:57.35\00:06:01.49 and your life experience 00:06:01.52\00:06:02.86 and then go back to your homeland 00:06:02.89\00:06:04.23 to do what you can. 00:06:04.26\00:06:05.59 As I said I have a burden to help and support people 00:06:05.63\00:06:10.13 because Christians are one thing for sure 00:06:10.17\00:06:12.80 not rich people, 00:06:12.83\00:06:14.97 they are like strugglers, I should say. 00:06:15.00\00:06:18.54 But let me ask you really wild question, 00:06:18.57\00:06:21.14 you know, I'm originally from Australia, 00:06:21.18\00:06:23.08 and I had a great burden, I think like you, 00:06:23.11\00:06:26.18 to go back to my country. 00:06:26.21\00:06:28.48 But there is a phenomenon. 00:06:28.52\00:06:31.35 I think Jesus said it 00:06:31.39\00:06:32.72 "The prophet has no honor in his own country." 00:06:32.75\00:06:35.42 Do you think that 00:06:35.46\00:06:38.66 when you go back to Pakistan 00:06:38.69\00:06:40.20 as someone who's lived 00:06:40.23\00:06:41.56 a good percentage of your life overseas, 00:06:41.60\00:06:43.93 you welcomed both by your own faith community 00:06:43.97\00:06:49.54 and the larger group, do they sort of, 00:06:49.57\00:06:52.24 look at any suspicion with you or are they welcoming? 00:06:52.27\00:06:54.41 No, you're 100% right. 00:06:54.44\00:06:56.51 I agree with you because the thing is this, 00:06:56.54\00:06:58.75 when you go 00:06:58.78\00:07:00.58 I work like in Seventh-day Adventist church, 00:07:00.62\00:07:03.52 but I see that more than 00:07:03.55\00:07:05.82 Seventh-day Adventist church in Pakistan, 00:07:05.85\00:07:07.66 other denomination, other people use us more, 00:07:07.69\00:07:10.93 and they invite us more, 00:07:10.96\00:07:12.49 they respect us more and they love us more. 00:07:12.53\00:07:15.13 Yeah, I'm right on the money, aren't I? 00:07:15.16\00:07:17.13 But actually inadvertently 00:07:17.17\00:07:18.73 that's broadening your influence. 00:07:18.77\00:07:20.54 But I just want to tell you. 00:07:20.57\00:07:22.27 Among others too, 00:07:22.30\00:07:23.77 I probably say I'm a Seventh-say Adventist, 00:07:23.81\00:07:25.87 and I have all the respect for a church, 00:07:25.91\00:07:28.11 and I love my church, 00:07:28.14\00:07:29.48 and I do promote Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:07:29.51\00:07:31.71 Yeah. 00:07:31.75\00:07:33.08 But I've got to tell you when I was a young fellow, 00:07:33.11\00:07:37.89 and my father took us on 00:07:37.92\00:07:39.75 one of our trips back to Australia 00:07:39.79\00:07:41.52 within our church 00:07:41.56\00:07:42.89 he transferred to the headquarters. 00:07:42.92\00:07:45.16 And so he was seen as an overseas worker. 00:07:45.19\00:07:47.83 North Americans have trouble with that. 00:07:47.86\00:07:49.46 They think missionaries go elsewhere. 00:07:49.50\00:07:51.50 But transferring from Australia to the US, 00:07:51.53\00:07:55.17 we were missionaries too in the US. 00:07:55.20\00:07:56.91 And so every, I think five or six years initially, 00:07:56.94\00:08:00.94 we could go back to visit our homeland. 00:08:00.98\00:08:03.58 It was sort of a holiday furlough 00:08:03.61\00:08:06.11 they used to call it. 00:08:06.15\00:08:07.58 And on one of those trips, 00:08:07.62\00:08:09.12 he took us to many different countries, 00:08:09.15\00:08:11.12 Pakistan included, India, 00:08:11.15\00:08:13.86 first time I've been to India I've been since 00:08:13.89\00:08:16.36 and, well, socially, religious differences 00:08:16.39\00:08:21.40 between Pakistan and India are huge. 00:08:21.43\00:08:23.37 But socially it's the same sort of cultural context 00:08:23.40\00:08:27.94 and many of the challenges that face evangelization 00:08:27.97\00:08:31.44 and our Christian church operations are the same. 00:08:31.47\00:08:34.64 And in India, it really hit me between the eyes, 00:08:34.68\00:08:40.02 when I saw the difficulty our church 00:08:40.05\00:08:42.88 witness was undergoing for many reasons 00:08:42.92\00:08:45.85 but most particularly 00:08:45.89\00:08:47.26 because even though they were baptizing 00:08:47.29\00:08:50.73 many, many people, 00:08:50.76\00:08:52.49 when they came into the church, 00:08:52.53\00:08:53.86 they would go to Loma Linda or elsewhere to study 00:08:53.90\00:08:56.26 and never come back. 00:08:56.30\00:08:58.13 And the church was struggling 00:08:58.17\00:08:59.93 for a lack of competent trained workers 00:08:59.97\00:09:03.34 because they had gone elsewhere. 00:09:03.37\00:09:04.77 Yeah. I see that... 00:09:04.81\00:09:06.14 And that really affected me and made me just determined. 00:09:06.17\00:09:10.75 I was going back to Australia, whether they wanted me, 00:09:10.78\00:09:14.68 I don't really know, 00:09:14.72\00:09:16.18 but I was under great compulsion 00:09:16.22\00:09:18.99 and I know that that phenomenon 00:09:19.02\00:09:20.66 plays out not just in India or in other places. 00:09:20.69\00:09:23.36 We have challenges too, you know, 00:09:23.39\00:09:24.89 that as I said that the training, you know, 00:09:24.93\00:09:27.53 the experience and like a pastor 00:09:27.56\00:09:30.30 or so evangelist or like presidents, 00:09:30.33\00:09:32.90 conference, you know, union, 00:09:32.93\00:09:35.24 we have big challenge in Pakistan. 00:09:35.27\00:09:37.87 You know, our membership, 00:09:37.91\00:09:39.81 I feel like dropped tremendously 00:09:39.84\00:09:42.01 when I was there, you know, 00:09:42.04\00:09:43.38 now I see our churches, some places are very empty. 00:09:43.41\00:09:47.42 I have in my ministry there was, 00:09:47.45\00:09:50.75 I have a friend of mine 00:09:50.79\00:09:52.12 that also work with me and our assistant, 00:09:52.15\00:09:54.19 one of our assistant, 00:09:54.22\00:09:55.96 who works with us in God of Life 00:09:55.99\00:09:57.73 International Ministry. 00:09:57.76\00:09:59.39 He was in a church. 00:09:59.43\00:10:00.93 We used to have that church full. 00:10:00.96\00:10:03.06 That was in northern side of Pakistan 00:10:03.10\00:10:06.57 and when he said and he called me, 00:10:06.60\00:10:09.47 he said, only two, three people are sitting 00:10:09.50\00:10:11.94 and I'm there. 00:10:11.97\00:10:13.31 And that is situation of our churches 00:10:13.34\00:10:16.28 and, you know, then I also went to see Pakistan, 00:10:16.31\00:10:19.25 so I feel like 00:10:19.28\00:10:21.58 there is some more training needs to be done, 00:10:21.62\00:10:23.75 more leadership training needed there. 00:10:23.79\00:10:26.55 And the vision needs to be corrected too, 00:10:26.59\00:10:28.46 you know, what we are... 00:10:28.49\00:10:30.83 So it's less just the declining interest 00:10:30.86\00:10:34.40 than it is difficulties in the community 00:10:34.43\00:10:37.33 because it seems to me in many cultures 00:10:37.37\00:10:39.80 and Pakistan's one of them, 00:10:39.83\00:10:41.17 where there's whatever the majority religion, 00:10:41.20\00:10:43.14 something else, 00:10:43.17\00:10:44.77 to take on Christianity as a minority, 00:10:44.81\00:10:47.14 that takes a little commitment and backing the trend 00:10:47.18\00:10:51.95 so there are my people, 00:10:51.98\00:10:53.31 but yet even there they drift away. 00:10:53.35\00:10:54.68 Yeah. 00:10:54.72\00:10:56.05 The commitment, and dedication, 00:10:56.08\00:10:57.99 and leadership, you know, it helps, you know. 00:10:58.02\00:11:00.59 The reason is this that we are some, 00:11:00.62\00:11:03.02 I feel that there is an oversight in our part, 00:11:03.06\00:11:05.89 we are not maybe doing our part right. 00:11:05.93\00:11:08.73 We must, first of all, 00:11:08.76\00:11:10.10 we need to have a sense of that evangelism, 00:11:10.13\00:11:14.07 we must reach people what the Lord has said, 00:11:14.10\00:11:17.07 what Jesus' message was, 00:11:17.11\00:11:18.87 the healing ministry of Jesus Christ 00:11:18.91\00:11:20.71 and also we need to talk more about Holy Spirit 00:11:20.74\00:11:23.78 and we need to... 00:11:23.81\00:11:25.28 the thing is this that if we see our doctrine, 00:11:25.31\00:11:27.68 you know, we are not I feel like 00:11:27.72\00:11:29.52 that we should do more. 00:11:29.55\00:11:31.29 The way I put it, you know, and some non-Christians might, 00:11:31.32\00:11:34.89 you know, the Holy Spirit, it may not compute with them, 00:11:34.92\00:11:37.69 but I've often said on religious liberty 00:11:37.73\00:11:39.93 that there is way too much religion in the world, 00:11:39.96\00:11:42.96 but not enough spirituality. 00:11:43.00\00:11:45.37 And all religion of any consequence 00:11:45.40\00:11:48.40 sees this aspect 00:11:48.44\00:11:49.77 and Christianity takes it to another level 00:11:49.80\00:11:52.41 where the Holy Spirit 00:11:52.44\00:11:53.78 is the indwelling characteristics of God 00:11:53.81\00:11:57.05 and the power of God. 00:11:57.08\00:11:58.78 Without that, it's just a belief system 00:11:58.81\00:12:00.75 and just a membership, a club, 00:12:00.78\00:12:03.02 and I could see why 00:12:03.05\00:12:05.25 other religions might even be suspicious of a competitor, 00:12:05.29\00:12:08.62 but if we're bringing 00:12:08.66\00:12:10.19 an innate fulfillment to our life 00:12:10.23\00:12:12.49 and the knowledge of the deity, 00:12:12.53\00:12:14.66 no other religion should be offended by that. 00:12:14.70\00:12:17.67 Yeah. 00:12:17.70\00:12:19.03 I tell you... 00:12:19.07\00:12:20.40 You're bringing psychological satisfaction 00:12:20.44\00:12:21.80 to your neighbors and your fellow countrymen. 00:12:21.84\00:12:24.11 And I see, you know, 00:12:24.14\00:12:25.54 what Jesus did on this planet or if we share Christ 00:12:25.57\00:12:29.71 and if you talk about good things, 00:12:29.74\00:12:31.71 I don't think people will be against you 00:12:31.75\00:12:34.02 even to any religion. 00:12:34.05\00:12:35.48 If you talk about something good, you know, 00:12:35.52\00:12:38.05 you see the people come, you know, 00:12:38.09\00:12:40.46 they are open to listen to you. 00:12:40.49\00:12:42.02 Yeah. 00:12:42.06\00:12:43.39 But only thing we cannot offend their religion, 00:12:43.43\00:12:46.09 we cannot go against their religion. 00:12:46.13\00:12:47.53 Absolutely. 00:12:47.56\00:12:48.90 But there is... You show Christ like corrector, 00:12:48.93\00:12:51.13 so people get attracted to you for good things. 00:12:51.17\00:12:53.87 I'm sure that's the secret to where you're very successful... 00:12:53.90\00:12:58.91 I'm trying to think of how to, 00:12:58.94\00:13:00.28 pilgrimage is back to your homeland. 00:13:00.31\00:13:02.14 Let's take a break now, so please stay with us. 00:13:02.18\00:13:04.51 We'll return shortly 00:13:04.55\00:13:05.95 to continue this very interesting discussion 00:13:05.98\00:13:09.15 of how Amjad is communicating his faith in his homeland. 00:13:09.18\00:13:12.72 Thank you so much. 00:13:12.75\00:13:14.09
