Welcome back to the Liberty Insider 00:00:04.77\00:00:06.94 and before the break with guest Steig Westerberg, 00:00:06.97\00:00:10.51 we were, you're the founder and CEO of Altserv... 00:00:10.54\00:00:14.11 Altoserv. 00:00:14.14\00:00:15.48 Altoserv, sorry. Yeah. 00:00:15.51\00:00:16.85 Yeah, Altoserv, sounds like a command... 00:00:16.88\00:00:18.75 That's why I'm getting wrong, alt-delete it's not alt-delete. 00:00:18.78\00:00:21.32 Yeah, control delete. Yeah. 00:00:21.35\00:00:24.32 But what the topic really is, is something beyond 00:00:24.35\00:00:27.62 that you're in the process of developing 00:00:27.66\00:00:30.59 the American Religious Liberty Institute, 00:00:30.63\00:00:32.66 which is a matrix program 00:00:32.69\00:00:35.66 service plan to integrate lay people or the citizenry 00:00:35.70\00:00:42.17 and give them information and the facility to contact 00:00:42.20\00:00:45.44 the legislators directly on a wide range of nascent, 00:00:45.47\00:00:52.15 baby legislative proposals 00:00:52.18\00:00:54.25 before they're at the trouble stage, right? 00:00:54.28\00:00:56.58 Yes, and not all legislation of course 00:00:56.62\00:00:58.72 just that focuses on religions... 00:00:58.75\00:01:00.09 Well, of all that you have to have 00:01:00.12\00:01:01.46 the ability to scan all potential legislation but, 00:01:01.49\00:01:04.76 yes, they wouldn't be involved with all. 00:01:04.79\00:01:07.50 But it is amazing and you've already discovered it. 00:01:07.53\00:01:09.53 An awful lot of this legislative proposals, 00:01:09.56\00:01:13.07 which on the face of it have nothing to do 00:01:13.10\00:01:15.14 with religion or religious liberty. 00:01:15.17\00:01:16.74 Yeah. 00:01:16.77\00:01:18.11 When you really examine the ramifications 00:01:18.14\00:01:19.61 or the intent or just read it more carefully, 00:01:19.64\00:01:23.41 it's the fly in the ointment. 00:01:23.45\00:01:25.75 Yeah, often times, yeah. 00:01:25.78\00:01:27.35 You know, the most classic one 00:01:27.38\00:01:29.38 that went to the Supreme Court was the Smith Case, 00:01:29.42\00:01:32.95 they call it where it was decided 00:01:32.99\00:01:36.93 that the law against drug use applied against peyotes use 00:01:36.96\00:01:42.00 in the sweat lodges, 00:01:42.03\00:01:43.37 which was their religious ceremony. 00:01:43.40\00:01:45.00 Yes. 00:01:45.03\00:01:46.37 And the Supreme Court said, "Well, yes, this is fine 00:01:46.40\00:01:48.74 because it's a law of universal application." 00:01:48.77\00:01:52.47 Well, there's plenty of laws of universal application 00:01:52.51\00:01:54.74 that advertently or inadvertently 00:01:54.78\00:01:57.15 could actually directly restrict 00:01:57.18\00:01:59.85 your religious liberty. 00:01:59.88\00:02:01.78 And the whole point of the constitution 00:02:01.82\00:02:04.55 and indeed the founding of the US commonwealth, 00:02:04.59\00:02:08.36 well, not commonwealth, republic 00:02:08.39\00:02:10.19 was designed to protect the minority from the majority. 00:02:10.23\00:02:13.80 Yeah. 00:02:13.83\00:02:15.16 So there's plenty of things, the majority will be just fine 00:02:15.20\00:02:16.80 and be happy with but you got to make sure 00:02:16.83\00:02:18.60 you protect your minority interests. 00:02:18.63\00:02:20.34 Yes. 00:02:20.37\00:02:21.70 And at the end of the day we're all a minority of one. 00:02:21.74\00:02:23.91 We are, yeah. 00:02:23.94\00:02:26.14 So you know where are you going from now, 00:02:26.17\00:02:30.05 I know you've given me some encouraging news 00:02:30.08\00:02:32.31 of different organizations you think you need to contact 00:02:32.35\00:02:35.32 and ways that you can get as many groups 00:02:35.35\00:02:40.19 and people behind this? 00:02:40.22\00:02:41.56 Well, initially... 00:02:41.59\00:02:42.92 What I'm trying to fish out of you is, 00:02:42.96\00:02:44.39 this needs to be broad based, 00:02:44.43\00:02:45.76 it's not just a narrow view for one church 00:02:45.79\00:02:48.20 or one geographical area, this, this... 00:02:48.23\00:02:51.50 This is for anybody that has a heart for religious liberty 00:02:51.53\00:02:55.94 that understands that rules, laws that are crafted, 00:02:55.97\00:03:00.78 they restrict that fundamentally impact our nation 00:03:00.81\00:03:05.05 and how we relate to each other, 00:03:05.08\00:03:06.65 how we interact with the government, 00:03:06.68\00:03:08.85 and so what I'm trying to do is just get the word out 00:03:08.88\00:03:12.75 that this site exists ARLinstitue.org. 00:03:12.79\00:03:16.59 We want people to come... 00:03:16.62\00:03:17.96 ARLinstitue.org. 00:03:17.99\00:03:21.46 And we want people to come sign up, 00:03:21.50\00:03:23.80 we want people to visit the site often. 00:03:23.83\00:03:27.24 Obviously the publicity to collect email addresses 00:03:27.27\00:03:31.31 and get people aware of it 00:03:31.34\00:03:32.81 is happening simultaneous to the development 00:03:32.84\00:03:35.38 of the backend and so the more they visit, 00:03:35.41\00:03:38.21 the more changes they will see 00:03:38.25\00:03:40.02 as we get this fully functional... 00:03:40.05\00:03:41.55 You're not gonna use their emails 00:03:41.58\00:03:42.92 for anything at all, just for this. 00:03:42.95\00:03:44.52 Yeah, these emails are specifically for people 00:03:44.55\00:03:47.12 to be getting information, you know, 00:03:47.16\00:03:50.53 about pending legislation. 00:03:50.56\00:03:52.23 And we do plan on expanding beyond pending legislation 00:03:52.26\00:03:55.40 into interpretations of rules and laws that agencies 00:03:55.43\00:04:01.00 are coming up with and so on, 00:04:01.04\00:04:02.64 and we also will have places 00:04:02.67\00:04:04.37 in there for crowd sourcing that sort of information. 00:04:04.41\00:04:09.61 If you have been a victim of or you feel 00:04:09.64\00:04:13.82 that you have been a victim of some agencies, 00:04:13.85\00:04:16.55 some governmental agency and I don't care what level, 00:04:16.58\00:04:19.59 federal, state, county, city 00:04:19.62\00:04:22.66 where they're passing rules or restrictions 00:04:22.69\00:04:25.76 that are impacting your ability to live your life, 00:04:25.79\00:04:29.86 conduct your profession 00:04:29.90\00:04:33.20 in violation of your belief structure. 00:04:33.23\00:04:36.20 We want to learn about it. 00:04:36.24\00:04:38.41 We have ways of 00:04:38.44\00:04:40.91 gathering and accumulating information 00:04:40.94\00:04:42.81 about pending legislation 00:04:42.84\00:04:44.18 at a federal and the state level, 00:04:44.21\00:04:45.81 but when it comes to the interpretation of rules 00:04:45.85\00:04:49.58 and the crafting of rules that agencies do, 00:04:49.62\00:04:52.59 it's a lot harder. 00:04:52.62\00:04:53.96 Yeah, and before the break 00:04:53.99\00:04:55.32 you were getting into this, won't you? 00:04:55.36\00:04:57.03 It's not just legislation although 00:04:57.06\00:05:00.83 in a certain way policies 00:05:00.86\00:05:03.47 and regulations do flow from legislation. 00:05:03.50\00:05:08.50 But they don't in themselves require legislation. 00:05:08.54\00:05:10.84 So when someone's in position 00:05:10.87\00:05:13.31 with a mandate to operate that department, they can pass him. 00:05:13.34\00:05:18.18 Yeah. 00:05:18.21\00:05:19.55 Apparently petty things that can have huge affects. 00:05:19.58\00:05:21.88 Well, an example for you would be, 00:05:21.92\00:05:24.29 this senate bill in California, 00:05:24.32\00:05:26.92 which was potentially catastrophic 00:05:26.96\00:05:30.43 for the 32 private parochial religious colleges 00:05:30.46\00:05:36.46 and universities in the state of California. 00:05:36.50\00:05:40.20 An example of that would be, 00:05:40.24\00:05:41.80 that those entities all need to be accredited. 00:05:41.84\00:05:44.71 So what if we start seeing the accrediting agencies 00:05:44.74\00:05:48.31 looking at those same 00:05:48.34\00:05:51.38 rules and deciding that they feel 00:05:51.41\00:05:54.78 that those schools are not open enough, 00:05:54.82\00:05:58.72 are not supportive of the lifestyle choices 00:05:58.75\00:06:02.96 that these rules are trying to look at. 00:06:02.99\00:06:07.00 You know, there's, that's not any... 00:06:07.03\00:06:09.00 that's something they crafted on their own. 00:06:09.03\00:06:11.00 There was no legislative act that told them 00:06:11.03\00:06:13.74 you need to look at it and interpret it this way. 00:06:13.77\00:06:17.04 I investigated a bit of that lately 00:06:17.07\00:06:18.81 and I found that 00:06:18.84\00:06:21.91 it is not government control directly. 00:06:21.94\00:06:25.08 It's really government affiliated but the accrediting 00:06:25.11\00:06:28.08 is a separate organization and it already is being used. 00:06:28.12\00:06:31.99 You and I know one case, where there was the good cop, 00:06:32.02\00:06:35.26 bad cop routine used by an accrediting organization, 00:06:35.29\00:06:38.19 I won't get specific... 00:06:38.23\00:06:39.86 But by an accrediting agency 00:06:39.89\00:06:42.40 toward religious school that we know. 00:06:42.43\00:06:44.90 I don't, I think it was more threat than anything 00:06:44.93\00:06:46.97 but you can see the dynamic could be used 00:06:47.00\00:06:49.84 because no institution wants to lose accreditation. 00:06:49.87\00:06:52.27 No. 00:06:52.31\00:06:54.38 And ironically that's the path that led them down 00:06:54.41\00:06:57.05 to their present vulnerability 00:06:57.08\00:06:58.85 that accreditation required greater facilities and so on, 00:06:58.88\00:07:01.85 which appeared to require government aid. 00:07:01.88\00:07:05.42 So they sold their birth right... 00:07:05.45\00:07:08.69 Yes. To government control. 00:07:08.72\00:07:12.16 And we believe we can bring 00:07:12.19\00:07:14.43 the same sort of response from voters 00:07:14.46\00:07:18.23 on those situations, but we need to warn of them. 00:07:18.27\00:07:21.27 That information where building a network of attorneys 00:07:21.30\00:07:25.01 that will be feeding those sorts of things to us, 00:07:25.04\00:07:28.04 but the best way to get that 00:07:28.08\00:07:30.61 is from the people themselves 00:07:30.65\00:07:32.85 that are directly involved in it. 00:07:32.88\00:07:34.38 And there's a form on the website 00:07:34.42\00:07:36.22 where they will be able to complete that information, 00:07:36.25\00:07:39.12 submit it to us so that we can aggregate it and use that. 00:07:39.15\00:07:41.66 And the more people you have, the more attorneys there, 00:07:41.69\00:07:43.69 the more entities and so on, 00:07:43.73\00:07:46.29 it becomes just ever more effective. 00:07:46.33\00:07:48.66 And obviously it just baby steps now but... 00:07:48.70\00:07:51.27 I can see already this, if this was fully up 00:07:51.30\00:07:54.20 and running with the broad cross section of 00:07:54.24\00:07:57.61 all of the people institutions across the whole country 00:07:57.64\00:08:00.78 and perhaps the whole continent. 00:08:00.81\00:08:02.84 'Cause Canada, 00:08:02.88\00:08:04.21 I'm sure this is part of your vision too, isn't it? 00:08:04.25\00:08:06.08 We do intend on supporting-- 00:08:06.11\00:08:07.62 Yeah, you know this could be an incredible tool, 00:08:07.65\00:08:10.52 and I think it could do it in a way 00:08:10.55\00:08:13.62 as you have stated it. 00:08:13.66\00:08:15.56 Your intention in a way that it's less intrusive 00:08:15.59\00:08:18.66 and what's the word I'm looking for, 00:08:18.69\00:08:23.77 complicating to true separation of church and state. 00:08:23.80\00:08:27.60 Because you know, in the 70s we saw the moral majority 00:08:27.64\00:08:30.44 and then I think they recast as the religious right, 00:08:30.47\00:08:32.97 they have voter list and some pressure politics and so on, 00:08:33.01\00:08:36.61 scare tactics often. 00:08:36.64\00:08:38.75 And I'm very, to this day very uncomfortable 00:08:38.78\00:08:40.92 with that because it was toying with religious 00:08:40.95\00:08:44.09 or with political power and even coercion. 00:08:44.12\00:08:48.79 And co-opting of political figures. 00:08:48.82\00:08:51.56 We don't want that, we just want to... 00:08:51.59\00:08:54.20 As I see what you're doing, we want to smooth the contact 00:08:54.23\00:08:57.17 between the people and their legislators 00:08:57.20\00:08:59.20 and give them information to interject their wishes 00:08:59.23\00:09:04.97 and ease some complications with people. 00:09:05.01\00:09:10.31 A lot of people don't believe it, 00:09:10.35\00:09:11.68 in the United States 00:09:11.71\00:09:13.05 which has a good constitution of reasonable history 00:09:13.08\00:09:16.08 of tolerance and religious, true religious liberty. 00:09:16.12\00:09:19.02 There are many people who are practically restricted 00:09:19.05\00:09:22.32 and harassed for their faith. 00:09:22.36\00:09:23.93 Absolutely. 00:09:23.96\00:09:25.29 You don't have to go to the Middle East, 00:09:25.33\00:09:26.86 or somewhere else to see it, 00:09:26.90\00:09:28.63 could be by our egregious 00:09:28.66\00:09:30.00 and maybe your very life's at threat 00:09:30.03\00:09:31.43 which is not typically of the US. 00:09:31.47\00:09:33.23 But eternal vigilance is the price of liberty, 00:09:33.27\00:09:37.04 this was written a long time ago. 00:09:37.07\00:09:38.71 It is, it's important that we keep, you know, 00:09:38.74\00:09:42.08 keep control of the edges of those... 00:09:42.11\00:09:45.11 And it also might, I don't know that this is your intention, 00:09:45.15\00:09:47.78 this might uncover some of those legislators 00:09:47.82\00:09:51.95 and they do exist who are of good intent 00:09:51.99\00:09:55.32 towards religious liberty and empower them. 00:09:55.36\00:09:59.16 Maybe the word has embolden on them 00:09:59.19\00:10:01.00 to put up protective legislation. 00:10:01.03\00:10:03.16 Yes, well, because of the nature of 00:10:03.20\00:10:06.87 what we're tracking and how we're empowering 00:10:06.90\00:10:09.00 individuals to make their voices heard. 00:10:09.04\00:10:13.14 The outcome of that of course is that we will know 00:10:13.17\00:10:15.68 who is proposing legislation, who is supporting it, 00:10:15.71\00:10:19.21 who is not supporting it. 00:10:19.25\00:10:21.02 I mean it's the natural byproduct of it, and so, yes, 00:10:21.05\00:10:24.22 we will know all that information. 00:10:24.25\00:10:25.59 Again you know, just to not warn 00:10:25.62\00:10:28.46 but to caution you 00:10:28.49\00:10:31.23 I really believe we should stay very clear of well, 00:10:31.26\00:10:34.56 you effectively would gather the information 00:10:34.60\00:10:36.43 sheet on a politician. 00:10:36.46\00:10:39.40 I think we should be very careful 00:10:39.43\00:10:41.67 to not sort of put them up as exhibit A, B or C or whatever. 00:10:41.70\00:10:45.27 Right. 00:10:45.31\00:10:46.64 We need to focus on the legislation. 00:10:46.68\00:10:49.31 We're not trying to... 00:10:49.34\00:10:51.01 Our focus is not on parties or politics. 00:10:51.05\00:10:52.88 Right, thank you for putting it in a better way. 00:10:52.91\00:10:55.05 Yeah, it's focused specifically on that process 00:10:55.08\00:11:00.72 of working with the individual representatives, congressmen, 00:11:00.76\00:11:04.69 senators wherever this is at, whichever form it's in, 00:11:04.73\00:11:09.10 and no matter who has proposed that legislation 00:11:09.13\00:11:11.93 to ensure that the outcome is one that we preserve... 00:11:11.97\00:11:15.94 I think you said your emphasis is not on party or politics. 00:11:15.97\00:11:21.31 Yeah. But you're half right. 00:11:21.34\00:11:23.71 I hear it all the time from Washington, 00:11:23.75\00:11:25.78 and it's on the news often. 00:11:25.81\00:11:27.15 They'll be some big hot issue and a politician will say, 00:11:27.18\00:11:29.18 "I'm not being political on this." 00:11:29.22\00:11:30.55 Yeah. 00:11:30.59\00:11:31.92 But there's nothing else that they can be 00:11:31.95\00:11:33.29 other than political. 00:11:33.32\00:11:35.09 What we all need to beware of is that they may not, 00:11:35.12\00:11:37.63 I'm not being partisan. 00:11:37.66\00:11:38.99 Yes. 00:11:39.03\00:11:40.36 And the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:11:40.40\00:11:42.26 and others too, we're not the only ones, 00:11:42.30\00:11:44.10 we're very scrupulous to not be, 00:11:44.13\00:11:48.70 you know, party biased. 00:11:48.74\00:11:50.97 Because religious liberty is not a single party issue. 00:11:51.01\00:11:54.61 Both parties at different times have supported us strongly 00:11:54.64\00:11:57.48 and both have been negative on it. 00:11:57.51\00:12:00.65 Yeah, absolutely. 00:12:00.68\00:12:02.45 And so by going to ARLinstitute.org 00:12:02.48\00:12:06.12 you have the ability to have your voice heard. 00:12:06.15\00:12:09.42 Get your message across 00:12:09.46\00:12:11.56 and make sure that people understand your viewpoint 00:12:11.59\00:12:15.36 and how you feel those law should be 00:12:15.40\00:12:18.43 enacted in our country. 00:12:18.47\00:12:21.24 In Jesus days, social networking was quite simple. 00:12:21.27\00:12:25.37 It was a matter of face time, 00:12:25.41\00:12:27.88 direct time with your neighbors. 00:12:27.91\00:12:31.15 With Jesus it was the 12 apostles, 00:12:31.18\00:12:34.32 with Jesus it was the 70 that was sent out. 00:12:34.35\00:12:38.29 And after Jesus, in the early days of Christianity 00:12:38.32\00:12:41.36 it was Paul before Felix before governor or Agrippa 00:12:41.39\00:12:45.79 and perhaps even before Caesar. 00:12:45.83\00:12:48.10 The amazing reality about technological era 00:12:48.13\00:12:52.73 is that was something like 00:12:52.77\00:12:54.40 what Steig Westerberg is providing. 00:12:54.44\00:12:59.51 Untold numbers of Christians 00:12:59.54\00:13:02.41 link through an electronic network 00:13:02.44\00:13:05.11 can again stand before Caesar, 00:13:05.15\00:13:07.35 can stand before the local legislator, 00:13:07.38\00:13:09.68 can make their voice and their witness heard. 00:13:09.72\00:13:13.22 We live in a marvelous age and as Daniel said, 00:13:13.25\00:13:16.29 "Knowledge should be increased in men, 00:13:16.32\00:13:18.76 travel to and fro." 00:13:18.79\00:13:20.23 It is not all scary or apocalyptic, 00:13:20.26\00:13:24.67 it's an enabling providence 00:13:24.70\00:13:27.57 that has given us tools to reach out. 00:13:27.60\00:13:30.17 Religious liberty is not something 00:13:30.21\00:13:32.47 as Jesus said to be kept in the darkness 00:13:32.51\00:13:34.64 because all of those things done in the darkness 00:13:34.68\00:13:36.95 could battering different have to be known, 00:13:36.98\00:13:39.31 will be known at the end of time. 00:13:39.35\00:13:41.02 And our charter, the gospel charter 00:13:41.05\00:13:43.79 is to proclaim loud and far and wide 00:13:43.82\00:13:47.22 the great truths that we have and that we cherish. 00:13:47.26\00:13:52.76 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:13:52.79\00:13:55.70
