Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:04.97\00:00:06.53 Before the break with guest Stephen Mansfield, 00:00:06.57\00:00:09.40 we were talking about the Manly Man program 00:00:09.44\00:00:11.57 that you've incorporated and it just hit me 00:00:11.61\00:00:14.91 even early on that these TV programs 00:00:14.94\00:00:17.71 like the My Three Sons and his father and so on. 00:00:17.75\00:00:21.02 There are always single males, buffoonish sort of lost souls 00:00:21.05\00:00:27.32 that the children can run rings around. 00:00:27.36\00:00:29.12 Right. 00:00:29.16\00:00:30.49 And even as I say that, 00:00:30.53\00:00:33.53 there's one or two with the single mother 00:00:33.56\00:00:34.90 but usually... 00:00:34.93\00:00:36.26 Yeah. 00:00:36.30\00:00:37.63 It's and they're very competent. 00:00:37.67\00:00:39.00 Yeah. 00:00:39.03\00:00:40.37 Admittedly that's very much like real life. 00:00:40.40\00:00:42.44 But it is. We all know women. 00:00:42.47\00:00:43.87 Well... Pretty well... 00:00:43.91\00:00:45.24 Sure. Pretty together. 00:00:45.27\00:00:46.61 But men have been held up a bad model 00:00:46.64\00:00:49.74 and I think many structures of society 00:00:49.78\00:00:52.05 have essentially figured a flea of emasculated men. 00:00:52.08\00:00:54.45 There's no question, I mean... 00:00:54.48\00:00:55.82 And so... 00:00:55.85\00:00:57.19 You know, when I'm watching the TV commercials now, 00:00:57.22\00:00:58.55 one of the reasons I wrote the book. 00:00:58.59\00:00:59.92 You watch TV commercial and who's the idiot? 00:00:59.95\00:01:02.09 It's always the middle aged father, 00:01:02.12\00:01:04.19 he's always you know, doing a happy dance 00:01:04.23\00:01:05.66 because he found the remote control 00:01:05.69\00:01:07.03 on the couch and when his wife and kids 00:01:07.06\00:01:08.46 are rolling their eyes at how silly he is. 00:01:08.50\00:01:10.87 And that is, again my goal is not to make domineering men, 00:01:10.90\00:01:16.10 my goal is to make biblical men. 00:01:16.14\00:01:18.57 Men who are taking responsibility, 00:01:18.61\00:01:20.81 men who are loving their children, 00:01:20.84\00:01:22.18 men who are strong in the lives of their wives 00:01:22.21\00:01:25.08 and in society as a whole, 00:01:25.11\00:01:26.45 and that we're suffering for the lack of that. 00:01:26.48\00:01:29.52 Now let me get your opinion. 00:01:29.55\00:01:30.89 I just thought of another TV program 00:01:30.92\00:01:32.32 that I think is a good model although, 00:01:32.35\00:01:34.59 not husband and wife model. 00:01:34.62\00:01:35.96 Sure. You remember, Gidget? 00:01:35.99\00:01:37.33 Oh yeah. 00:01:37.36\00:01:38.69 Now her father, that's what I think 00:01:38.73\00:01:40.96 was the type of role, very considered, 00:01:41.00\00:01:45.00 authority figure but not overbearing 00:01:45.03\00:01:46.84 and very common sense advice and he was portrayed it. 00:01:46.87\00:01:51.34 Wouldn't you agree, that he was a manly man, 00:01:51.37\00:01:53.98 he's fulfilling his family role obviously the wife 00:01:54.01\00:01:56.38 and I think he was a widower that was... 00:01:56.41\00:01:58.61 I don't remember, I tell you... 00:01:58.65\00:01:59.98 He's never really said. 00:02:00.02\00:02:01.35 Yeah, I'll tell you one show now that 00:02:01.38\00:02:02.72 I think it shows a very positive reason, 00:02:02.75\00:02:04.09 very popular TV show called Blue Bloods 00:02:04.12\00:02:06.69 and Tom Selleck plays the sort of father figure. 00:02:06.72\00:02:09.69 And you see a move back more to the traditional father, 00:02:09.72\00:02:12.33 I think that our society wants to see the firm, clear, 00:02:12.36\00:02:17.13 loving father taking the lead, 00:02:17.17\00:02:19.73 and so we've got that sort of fantasy in our videos, 00:02:19.77\00:02:22.07 in our movies and in our arts, 00:02:22.10\00:02:23.57 but it's not a reality in society. 00:02:23.61\00:02:24.94 No. 00:02:24.97\00:02:26.31 And of course, I'm a contrarian. 00:02:26.34\00:02:27.88 I think of Dr. Huxtable on where that lead. 00:02:27.91\00:02:30.05 Yeah. 00:02:30.08\00:02:31.41 Well, there's been a transformation... 00:02:31.45\00:02:32.78 You know the Bill Cosby that you echoed. 00:02:32.81\00:02:34.15 Sure. 00:02:34.18\00:02:35.52 But I think it's a reflection of what's going in societies, 00:02:35.55\00:02:38.05 they aren't unnecessarily producing it now. 00:02:38.09\00:02:39.92 So how do you run these programs 00:02:39.95\00:02:41.96 just to give you a chance to explain... 00:02:41.99\00:02:44.33 Sure. What you really do? 00:02:44.36\00:02:46.23 We do a lot of men's gatherings 00:02:46.26\00:02:49.43 around the world of various size 00:02:49.46\00:02:50.97 and my goal is not to create the momentum 00:02:51.00\00:02:53.90 for some new super event, 00:02:53.94\00:02:55.64 but my goal is to get men to build bands of brothers. 00:02:55.67\00:02:58.67 We want them to get more, to get men around them 00:02:58.71\00:03:00.68 who love them, who aren't afraid of them, 00:03:00.71\00:03:02.41 where they're helping each other, 00:03:02.44\00:03:03.78 where there's a free fire zone as I said earlier, 00:03:03.81\00:03:05.71 where they're saying the things that needed to be said 00:03:05.75\00:03:07.18 and helping each other endure life. 00:03:07.22\00:03:08.85 And then yes, working through books like mine 00:03:08.88\00:03:10.65 and working through books like John Eldredge's. 00:03:10.69\00:03:13.32 But that's where we're seeing tremendous change. 00:03:13.36\00:03:17.39 And so, you know, we've got a website greatman.us. 00:03:17.43\00:03:19.89 We've got other kinds of things that we use. 00:03:19.93\00:03:21.96 But the bottom line is 00:03:22.00\00:03:23.47 that we're trying to help men understand 00:03:23.50\00:03:26.20 what noble manhood can be. 00:03:26.23\00:03:27.90 My book "Mansfield's Book of Manly Men" 00:03:27.94\00:03:29.84 lays out some primary maxims 00:03:29.87\00:03:31.41 and then it looks at that manhood of the life of Lincoln 00:03:31.44\00:03:34.38 and Roosevelt and famous people throughout history. 00:03:34.41\00:03:37.21 So it's just an attempt to call men to something higher 00:03:37.25\00:03:40.72 and then give them a mechanism for doing it. 00:03:40.75\00:03:42.95 Lots of gatherings for men will describe, 00:03:42.98\00:03:46.32 you know, what a man ought to be 00:03:46.35\00:03:47.69 and then leave a man to do it. 00:03:47.72\00:03:49.06 But I think men aren't meant to walk alone... 00:03:49.09\00:03:50.43 So you have a follow up... Absolutely. 00:03:50.46\00:03:51.79 ..a little structure on this. 00:03:51.83\00:03:53.16 Absolutely, yeah, and it has to do 00:03:53.19\00:03:54.53 with these buildings of Band of Brothers, 00:03:54.56\00:03:55.90 that's what I want to see around them. 00:03:55.93\00:03:57.27 Now, you know, I can think of two alternatives 00:03:57.30\00:03:58.63 one, and one very bad. 00:03:58.67\00:04:01.40 Now I think in American society 00:04:01.44\00:04:03.81 since we've become more militarized, 00:04:03.84\00:04:06.74 it's basically since the war on terror. 00:04:06.78\00:04:09.51 I see the military fulfilling that role 00:04:09.54\00:04:11.71 in some of the gathering point 00:04:11.75\00:04:14.02 especially for the new generation 00:04:14.05\00:04:15.75 in little towns that don't have jobs 00:04:15.78\00:04:17.75 so they drift to the military and that, 00:04:17.79\00:04:21.29 perhaps artificially supply 00:04:21.32\00:04:22.92 some of what you're talking about, 00:04:22.96\00:04:24.39 but I don't like that. 00:04:24.43\00:04:25.76 I'm very nervous about any society that becomes, 00:04:25.79\00:04:29.50 that exalts militarism. 00:04:29.53\00:04:31.10 Yeah, I can sort of understand that. 00:04:31.13\00:04:32.87 And by the way I'd spent a lot of time 00:04:32.90\00:04:35.47 with the military, 00:04:35.50\00:04:36.84 do a lot of events for the military. 00:04:36.87\00:04:38.77 I'd speak at Naval Academy at West Point. 00:04:38.81\00:04:40.91 And I can tell you that even though these are, 00:04:40.94\00:04:44.21 these guys are trained in the military sense, 00:04:44.25\00:04:46.45 they are as much in uncertainty and instability 00:04:46.48\00:04:50.42 regarding manhood as any other part of society, 00:04:50.45\00:04:53.12 and that's one of the reasons I try to be there. 00:04:53.15\00:04:55.19 But you know, you've got a huge jump on me 00:04:55.22\00:04:58.66 and I haven't been in the military. 00:04:58.69\00:05:00.26 I still remember my number from the Vietnam War, 243. 00:05:00.30\00:05:04.83 But you know, the marines with no man left behind 00:05:04.87\00:05:08.10 and I hear about the bonding, 00:05:08.14\00:05:09.47 I think there's some positive societal link 00:05:09.50\00:05:14.68 that they're gaining from that, 00:05:14.71\00:05:16.11 but given that it takes military to do it, 00:05:16.14\00:05:18.95 that's skewing society 00:05:18.98\00:05:20.68 or at least the male part of society 00:05:20.72\00:05:22.05 in the wrong direction. 00:05:22.08\00:05:23.42 It is but I'm at least thankful that there are certain values 00:05:23.45\00:05:25.55 that are maintained in the military. 00:05:25.59\00:05:26.92 For example, there's a film that I'm helping to promote, 00:05:26.96\00:05:30.83 I don't have, I didn't help create it 00:05:30.86\00:05:32.69 are called Hacksaw Ridge, 00:05:32.73\00:05:34.06 you and I have been talking about this in our free time. 00:05:34.10\00:05:36.80 And it's actually about a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:05:36.83\00:05:39.40 Desmond Doss. 00:05:39.43\00:05:40.77 Who would be Desmond Doss, 00:05:40.80\00:05:42.14 who maintained his conscience scruples 00:05:42.17\00:05:44.11 and became a medic in the military 00:05:44.14\00:05:46.47 and then was the only 00:05:46.51\00:05:48.11 conscientious objector to ever win 00:05:48.14\00:05:49.48 the congressional Medal of Honor. 00:05:49.51\00:05:51.18 And this movie produced by Mel Gibson, 00:05:51.21\00:05:53.52 powerful statement. 00:05:53.55\00:05:55.02 And I've been writing and tweets 00:05:55.05\00:05:56.52 and then saying before audiences, 00:05:56.55\00:05:58.65 it illustrates some of the principles 00:05:58.69\00:06:00.12 of noble manhood. 00:06:00.16\00:06:01.49 Even though it's very gory film 00:06:01.52\00:06:03.12 and it's a, accurately portrays the battle of Hacksaw Ridge. 00:06:03.16\00:06:07.66 The fact is it's going to encourage 00:06:07.70\00:06:09.10 noble manhood in the society... 00:06:09.13\00:06:10.47 You're right, and thanks for bringing up. 00:06:10.50\00:06:11.83 I take it wherever I can find it. 00:06:11.87\00:06:13.20 And I also help chaplain in one of the NFL teams 00:06:13.23\00:06:15.04 and I'm not happy about what's happening 00:06:15.07\00:06:16.50 in the NFL with character, 00:06:16.54\00:06:17.87 low character and poor behavior, 00:06:17.91\00:06:19.34 but at least there's a little bit in there, 00:06:19.37\00:06:21.04 some people, some exemplary people 00:06:21.08\00:06:23.01 and I'm glad for whatever we can put on a screen 00:06:23.04\00:06:24.78 that actually exemplifies these things. 00:06:24.81\00:06:26.95 Now I'm planning on having a whole program 00:06:26.98\00:06:28.82 on Hacksaw Ridge... 00:06:28.85\00:06:30.19 Good. Good. 00:06:30.22\00:06:31.55 ..in due order. 00:06:31.59\00:06:32.92 But let me give you the other example. 00:06:32.95\00:06:34.69 I'm not critiquing, 00:06:34.72\00:06:36.93 the Manly Men program sounds fantastic, 00:06:36.96\00:06:39.56 but the need for it really on this, 00:06:39.59\00:06:43.20 it seems to me as I studied the history of Europe 00:06:43.23\00:06:46.90 after World War I. 00:06:46.94\00:06:49.40 A whole generation was basically eviscerated 00:06:49.44\00:06:52.11 at World War I anyway, 00:06:52.14\00:06:54.01 then societal norms were disrupted radically, 00:06:54.04\00:06:58.08 especially in Germany and France. 00:06:58.11\00:07:01.08 And then now in Berlin, 00:07:01.12\00:07:03.59 particularly through cabaret still, 00:07:03.62\00:07:05.65 we know a bit about it. 00:07:05.69\00:07:07.02 There was all sorts of transvestism 00:07:07.06\00:07:10.39 and just all sorts of admirations. 00:07:10.43\00:07:11.76 Of their kind, sure. 00:07:11.79\00:07:13.13 There was clearly a hunger in Germany 00:07:13.16\00:07:15.36 in that time for a sense of manhood, 00:07:15.40\00:07:18.50 and it was provided in part by these hunting societies 00:07:18.53\00:07:22.87 or male fraternities that morphed later, 00:07:22.90\00:07:27.58 they didn't, they were not bad when they started at all, 00:07:27.61\00:07:29.41 but they morphed later very easily 00:07:29.44\00:07:31.31 into Hitler Youth in and the whole Hitler program. 00:07:31.35\00:07:36.65 You know, what's your comment on that? 00:07:36.69\00:07:38.02 It sounds like you agree that it was the same need 00:07:38.05\00:07:40.22 but it was falsely fulfilled. 00:07:40.26\00:07:42.02 Well, that's part of the problem with manhood, 00:07:42.06\00:07:44.79 if you don't have noble manhood 00:07:44.83\00:07:46.26 and you don't have manhood rooted 00:07:46.29\00:07:48.16 in values and rooted in certain, 00:07:48.20\00:07:50.00 I would say biblical truth, 00:07:50.03\00:07:51.50 then the practices of men can be put at the service 00:07:51.53\00:07:54.74 of wicked ideas. 00:07:54.77\00:07:56.71 I mean, hunting is a noble thing 00:07:56.74\00:07:58.27 and we can all talk about the virtues of it. 00:07:58.31\00:08:00.18 At the same time hunting societies 00:08:00.21\00:08:02.04 can become tools of the KKK, 00:08:02.08\00:08:04.48 they can become tools of skinheads, 00:08:04.51\00:08:06.31 they can become tools of murderers 00:08:06.35\00:08:08.35 and Nazis etcetera. 00:08:08.38\00:08:09.72 So that's part of the issue, it's not so much, you know, 00:08:09.75\00:08:12.65 some men think they're being manly 00:08:12.69\00:08:14.02 'cause they're out riding motorcycles. 00:08:14.06\00:08:15.39 Well, but it also the Hell's Angels, point is, 00:08:15.42\00:08:17.29 it's about wedding manly activities 00:08:17.33\00:08:20.30 to a biblical foundation. 00:08:20.33\00:08:21.66 Right, and that's the safety on this... 00:08:21.70\00:08:23.03 Exactly. Exactly. 00:08:23.06\00:08:24.40 And the proven model, obviously as a Christian, 00:08:24.43\00:08:26.33 we know those principles are eternal. 00:08:26.37\00:08:28.40 And then those activities become noble in the sports, 00:08:28.44\00:08:31.41 the hunting, yeah, being in the woods etcetera. 00:08:31.44\00:08:33.01 And there's a text in the Bible 00:08:33.04\00:08:34.38 and I'm good on remembering text 00:08:34.41\00:08:36.21 but not good on the reference 00:08:36.24\00:08:37.58 but in the Old Testament on a certain society it says, 00:08:37.61\00:08:40.95 that there was a weak society, 00:08:40.98\00:08:42.42 that were corrupt and that the women ruled over them. 00:08:42.45\00:08:44.49 Yeah. Do you remember? 00:08:44.52\00:08:46.55 At the same time 00:08:46.59\00:08:47.92 one of the scriptures I really love 00:08:47.96\00:08:49.29 is when David's about to pass from his life 00:08:49.32\00:08:51.79 and he turns to his son Solomon, 00:08:51.83\00:08:53.16 and in the King James Version of Bible he says, 00:08:53.19\00:08:54.93 "Show yourself a man." 00:08:54.96\00:08:56.36 Well, it's fascinating passage of scripture because you know, 00:08:56.40\00:08:58.43 throughout the Bible most of the time 00:08:58.47\00:08:59.80 we see the word man or male or men. 00:08:59.83\00:09:01.94 It just means male. 00:09:01.97\00:09:03.30 It means just, you know, that's refers to gender. 00:09:03.34\00:09:05.41 There are few times 00:09:05.44\00:09:06.78 when it refers to the lore of manhood, 00:09:06.81\00:09:08.68 the way of a man, the masculinity of a man, 00:09:08.71\00:09:11.51 when he says show yourself a man, 00:09:11.55\00:09:12.95 he wasn't telling him to be male. 00:09:12.98\00:09:14.32 Solomon was probably in his 20s at that point. 00:09:14.35\00:09:16.89 What he was telling was, 00:09:16.92\00:09:18.25 go be a good and a noble man as God directs 00:09:18.29\00:09:20.52 and that's what we're trying to get men to do. 00:09:20.56\00:09:22.09 Well, I'll throw another one that you might, 00:09:22.12\00:09:24.36 well, you probably thought of it. 00:09:24.39\00:09:25.73 In the Book of Job, God says to Job, 00:09:25.76\00:09:27.93 speak up like a man. 00:09:27.96\00:09:29.30 Yes. I address that often. 00:09:29.33\00:09:30.67 In other words, you've been saying 00:09:30.70\00:09:32.03 all these things about me... 00:09:32.07\00:09:33.40 Right. Tell me now. Yeah. 00:09:33.44\00:09:34.77 Have the guts. 00:09:34.80\00:09:36.14 So there's obviously a lower a way of men, 00:09:36.17\00:09:39.54 a body of traits and characteristics 00:09:39.57\00:09:42.01 that God is referring to. 00:09:42.04\00:09:43.38 And one translation he says 00:09:43.41\00:09:44.75 prepared to defend yourself like a man 00:09:44.78\00:09:47.05 and that's, that says 00:09:47.08\00:09:48.82 there's a lore we ought to be mastering, 00:09:48.85\00:09:50.22 so you and I as we come up in our various churches, 00:09:50.25\00:09:52.45 the church should be emphasizing, 00:09:52.49\00:09:53.82 what is noble manhood? 00:09:53.86\00:09:55.19 What is righteous manhood? 00:09:55.22\00:09:56.56 And not to the diminishment of women 00:09:56.59\00:09:57.93 but for the sake, actually I think 00:09:57.96\00:09:59.43 the greatest men in fisheries... 00:09:59.46\00:10:01.03 Well, it's a matter of roles, 00:10:01.06\00:10:02.40 to me it's not a matter of ability. 00:10:02.43\00:10:03.87 No. 00:10:03.90\00:10:07.50 We all know, I mean 00:10:07.54\00:10:08.87 it's the great untold secret of life 00:10:08.90\00:10:11.41 that women do things 00:10:11.44\00:10:12.77 because they are usually more task oriented. 00:10:12.81\00:10:14.81 They will do things nine times out of ten better than men. 00:10:14.84\00:10:16.98 Yeah, no question. 00:10:17.01\00:10:18.35 And in the home, the woman is the glue 00:10:18.38\00:10:19.78 that holds things together. 00:10:19.81\00:10:22.15 They are the main beneficiary. 00:10:22.18\00:10:23.52 They're not second fiddle. Yeah. 00:10:23.55\00:10:24.89 A noble man... 00:10:24.92\00:10:26.25 Then in the role of men or son, men need to fulfill that. 00:10:26.29\00:10:27.82 Right. Yeah. I can see that very clearly. 00:10:27.86\00:10:29.72 And I think you're doing a fabulous thing. 00:10:29.76\00:10:31.19 I appreciate that. 00:10:31.23\00:10:32.56 So where are you going with this now? 00:10:32.59\00:10:34.50 Do you think it's a growing movement 00:10:34.53\00:10:36.56 or is it peaked? 00:10:36.60\00:10:37.93 It's definitely growing movement 00:10:37.97\00:10:39.30 and it's having a huge impact around the world 00:10:39.33\00:10:40.87 and well, I think what's most important is 00:10:40.90\00:10:43.10 we're starting to see men to get to, 00:10:43.14\00:10:44.47 getting together in these bands of brothers 00:10:44.51\00:10:46.47 and begin to perfect noble manhood together. 00:10:46.51\00:10:50.25 There was a near aware Nelson Eddy 00:10:50.28\00:10:52.18 and his companion of the day 00:10:52.21\00:10:55.98 or the movie could sing with vigor, 00:10:56.02\00:10:58.45 "Give me some men who are stout-hearted men. 00:10:58.49\00:11:01.52 And I'll soon give you ten thousand more." 00:11:01.56\00:11:04.26 I know Ellen White writing 00:11:04.29\00:11:05.63 in the early Adventist Church said, 00:11:05.66\00:11:07.36 that the greatest want of the world 00:11:07.40\00:11:09.80 is for man of principle, who will not waver. 00:11:09.83\00:11:13.80 Our guest on this program has taken a strong lead 00:11:13.84\00:11:17.81 in reeducating men 00:11:17.84\00:11:20.31 in the United States and Canada, 00:11:20.34\00:11:21.91 and indeed all around the world 00:11:21.94\00:11:23.78 but in the Western world particularly to reassert 00:11:23.81\00:11:26.51 their true biblical masculinity, 00:11:26.55\00:11:28.85 a leadership role. 00:11:28.88\00:11:31.09 There is much that is exciting about modernism. 00:11:31.12\00:11:34.52 And there is much that is frightening 00:11:34.56\00:11:36.12 about the modern devolution of social structures 00:11:36.16\00:11:39.39 including the family. 00:11:39.43\00:11:41.26 We do need to go back to basics, 00:11:41.30\00:11:44.47 to biblical basics 00:11:44.50\00:11:46.17 to the respectability of our assigned roles 00:11:46.20\00:11:50.17 if you like, 00:11:50.21\00:11:51.54 created roles not of one superior over the other, 00:11:51.57\00:11:54.31 but to use and maximize the character strengths 00:11:54.34\00:11:59.48 that ought to be exemplified in this case 00:11:59.51\00:12:02.52 by the male role, Manly Men. 00:12:02.55\00:12:06.52 It's not something to laugh at, it's something to be aimed at. 00:12:06.55\00:12:11.23 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:12:11.26\00:12:14.03
