Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:05.43\00:00:07.80 Before the break, at least me as a semi-oldie, 00:00:07.84\00:00:13.11 my wife wouldn't allow me to call myself an oldie 00:00:13.14\00:00:15.94 and a mature gentleman, 00:00:15.98\00:00:17.38 we were talking about the young people in there, 00:00:17.41\00:00:20.42 Italians with pseudo knowledge on the internet so... 00:00:20.45\00:00:24.32 Yes. 00:00:24.35\00:00:26.52 But it does come to a bigger question the internet 00:00:26.55\00:00:30.73 and not just through the media 00:00:30.76\00:00:32.19 and where we get their information, 00:00:32.23\00:00:33.86 where we get our news 00:00:33.90\00:00:35.23 and it's sort of a truism of late 00:00:35.26\00:00:37.33 that large urban societies 00:00:37.37\00:00:41.54 particularly are not going to libraries, 00:00:41.57\00:00:44.54 aren't studying for themselves 00:00:44.57\00:00:46.91 and they sort of fed the spoonfuls of information 00:00:46.94\00:00:50.85 that may even be misinformation. 00:00:50.88\00:00:53.31 And it's hard for them to know reality 00:00:53.35\00:00:55.25 and then you put in religion which is a complex topic anyway 00:00:55.28\00:01:01.36 and it can create huge misperceptions 00:01:01.39\00:01:03.83 I think the way it's presented. 00:01:03.86\00:01:05.36 Absolutely and I'm a very strong believer 00:01:05.39\00:01:08.76 that a lot of times the media will characterize various, 00:01:08.80\00:01:15.17 you know, individuals, people groups, 00:01:15.20\00:01:17.74 whether it's minorities, 00:01:17.77\00:01:19.37 whether it's the rich versus the poor, Hispanic, 00:01:19.41\00:01:25.68 the Hispanic community and ultimately I believe 00:01:25.71\00:01:29.98 that the way that we should perceive all human, 00:01:30.02\00:01:33.15 all, all of humanity is through the eyes of scripture 00:01:33.19\00:01:38.09 and that is we have a world that is in need of a savior 00:01:38.13\00:01:43.90 and we have this plague of sin that every member 00:01:43.93\00:01:48.87 of humanity is suffering from, 00:01:48.90\00:01:52.17 so we need to really understand that 00:01:52.21\00:01:54.91 and not demonize people 00:01:54.94\00:01:56.34 but really seek to save the lost. 00:01:56.38\00:01:57.91 Well, we need to have a viewpoint or a filter, 00:01:57.95\00:02:02.98 but quite the same that we apply to all information, 00:02:03.02\00:02:06.82 but there is probably a thin line between that 00:02:06.86\00:02:09.69 and presupposition 00:02:09.72\00:02:12.79 that only accepts information consistent with that 00:02:12.83\00:02:16.26 and rejects troubling things. 00:02:16.30\00:02:18.37 That's true. 00:02:18.40\00:02:19.73 So the trick is to have people that are open-minded 00:02:19.77\00:02:22.64 and yet not easily led us astray. 00:02:22.67\00:02:26.61 That's a very good point, I'm glad you mentioned that, 00:02:26.64\00:02:29.91 that's solid point. 00:02:29.94\00:02:31.28 But, you know, I really think that rather than 00:02:31.31\00:02:33.95 a lot of information individually available, 00:02:33.98\00:02:37.05 our society, our culture and our world 00:02:37.09\00:02:39.59 is more full of information than ever before. 00:02:39.62\00:02:41.69 I mean all the ages before don't cumulatively add up 00:02:41.72\00:02:45.09 to what is known right now, but that doesn't mean 00:02:45.13\00:02:47.56 you and I know it all... 00:02:47.60\00:02:49.30 Absolutely. 00:02:49.33\00:02:50.67 Even if we knew it do we comprehend it? 00:02:50.70\00:02:52.93 So in some ways I think the individual 00:02:52.97\00:02:55.74 is adrift in a sea of competing information, 00:02:55.77\00:02:59.17 confusing information, just information. 00:02:59.21\00:03:03.78 And I know you have a burden on it, 00:03:03.81\00:03:07.62 sometimes people even tweet me with it, 00:03:07.65\00:03:10.62 the conspiracy theory stuff... 00:03:10.65\00:03:13.72 But I think the protection against that 00:03:13.76\00:03:15.99 is to refer for us as Christian's reference 00:03:16.02\00:03:18.96 that against our biblical worldview. 00:03:18.99\00:03:22.56 And it to me it's uncanny 00:03:22.60\00:03:24.93 how much of what's happening in the US 00:03:24.97\00:03:27.17 and the larger world in recent years 00:03:27.20\00:03:30.47 tracks perfectly with some of the last verses 00:03:30.51\00:03:35.01 of Revelation talks about an end time. 00:03:35.04\00:03:39.31 I remember in 2008, 00:03:39.35\00:03:41.02 I wrote an article on the economic collapse 00:03:41.05\00:03:45.15 that we're still living through. 00:03:45.19\00:03:46.52 We really haven't rebuilt from that. 00:03:46.55\00:03:48.82 And of course, in Revelation it says, 00:03:48.86\00:03:50.93 "The merchants will cry 00:03:50.96\00:03:53.23 and wonder that their wealth's lost in one hour." 00:03:53.26\00:03:57.73 That's the modern world 00:03:57.77\00:03:59.10 and of course that's not the full fulfillment. 00:03:59.13\00:04:01.50 But when you see that stuff, 00:04:01.54\00:04:03.41 you know the plans to rebuild the economy 00:04:03.44\00:04:07.61 and to deal with the national debt, 00:04:07.64\00:04:09.84 those need to be addressed 00:04:09.88\00:04:11.21 and secular people need to do the best they can 00:04:11.25\00:04:14.55 but you and I know that's not gonna win world. 00:04:14.58\00:04:17.29 No. 00:04:17.32\00:04:18.65 It's gonna end with the collapse 00:04:18.69\00:04:20.02 of the world as we know it, 00:04:20.06\00:04:21.39 and the establishment of an eternal Kingdom. 00:04:21.42\00:04:24.26 So we've got a template to put over, over these things. 00:04:24.29\00:04:27.36 That's right. 00:04:27.40\00:04:29.23 But we also can't allow ourselves 00:04:29.26\00:04:32.10 to be characterized by the secularists, 00:04:32.13\00:04:34.70 it's just people that don't care about 00:04:34.74\00:04:37.04 what's happening here or worse 00:04:37.07\00:04:39.21 that we're irrelevant yourselves 00:04:39.24\00:04:41.61 what's happening here because we can be discarded, 00:04:41.64\00:04:44.71 and the pope in his recent speech 00:04:44.75\00:04:48.48 and a number of people that have picked up 00:04:48.52\00:04:50.55 from the sort of stuff on the war on terror, 00:04:50.59\00:04:52.85 they constantly decrying fundamentalists and extremists. 00:04:52.89\00:04:58.49 Are you willing to be called a fundamentalist? 00:04:58.53\00:05:02.33 No. You're not. 00:05:02.36\00:05:03.90 Well, on one level I'm not but yet... 00:05:03.93\00:05:05.60 Yes. 00:05:05.63\00:05:06.97 I have to be a fundamentalist, it's fundamental to me 00:05:07.00\00:05:09.80 what's God's holy word says, I owe to my life. 00:05:09.84\00:05:13.64 So just as with gay, it used to be a word 00:05:13.68\00:05:16.01 of that happy people and that, 00:05:16.04\00:05:17.88 it's been subverted and used to something different 00:05:17.91\00:05:20.72 and I think there's a, there's a, I think somewhere, 00:05:20.75\00:05:24.79 somewhere they've thought it through 00:05:24.82\00:05:26.55 and it's being used consciously to marginalize people of faith 00:05:26.59\00:05:30.36 that differ from if not a secular 00:05:30.39\00:05:33.50 than a narrow religious viewpoint... 00:05:33.53\00:05:36.10 To demonize it, more fundamentalist, extremists. 00:05:36.13\00:05:38.83 Yes and I didn't get your question but... 00:05:38.87\00:05:41.27 Vegetarianism is many people think 00:05:41.30\00:05:43.44 that's an extremist viewpoint. 00:05:43.47\00:05:45.24 Yeah. I don't necessarily think so. 00:05:45.27\00:05:48.28 Would my faith causes people to call me a fundamentalist 00:05:48.31\00:05:53.88 and I'd be happy to be called a fundamentalist. 00:05:53.92\00:05:58.29 The way I took your question once more in the sense of, 00:05:58.32\00:06:01.19 you know, the connotation of fundamentalist 00:06:01.22\00:06:03.26 as it's used in secular society... 00:06:03.29\00:06:04.73 Oh, no, I set you up for it. 00:06:04.76\00:06:06.09 Is one bad, it doesn't use their brain, 00:06:06.13\00:06:09.43 and you know, they're very close minded 00:06:09.46\00:06:11.43 in that kind of thing. 00:06:11.47\00:06:12.87 and I believe that we need to be informed 00:06:12.90\00:06:17.94 as Bible believing Christians, we need to be informed, 00:06:17.97\00:06:22.04 we need to know what's going on and taking place in the world 00:06:22.08\00:06:24.75 even outside of the prophetic context 00:06:24.78\00:06:27.42 just because if we're seeking to reach the world, 00:06:27.45\00:06:31.29 we need to know what, what their fears are, 00:06:31.32\00:06:34.16 what they're thinking about and I believe that can also be 00:06:34.19\00:06:37.43 entering wedge into a discussion 00:06:37.46\00:06:40.13 where we can reach hearts and minds. 00:06:40.16\00:06:41.90 I can give you a strange example of someone 00:06:41.93\00:06:44.23 that was clearly a fundamentalist 00:06:44.27\00:06:46.97 and a thinking person 00:06:47.00\00:06:49.10 and some may even raise eyebrows on it 00:06:49.14\00:06:51.61 because it's not the example you'd expect. 00:06:51.64\00:06:54.54 But Thomas Moore who is a patron saint 00:06:54.58\00:06:58.05 of the Catholic Church, who is the defender of the pope 00:06:58.08\00:07:02.32 in the king's great issue of Henry VIII. 00:07:02.35\00:07:06.15 So, you know, in the larger debate, 00:07:06.19\00:07:08.42 I might have taken the other side, 00:07:08.46\00:07:10.96 but as a human being, being true to his principles, 00:07:10.99\00:07:14.70 there's a lot to recommend Thomas Moore. 00:07:14.73\00:07:18.17 He was a fundamentalist but he was, 00:07:18.20\00:07:20.00 he thought it through, 00:07:20.04\00:07:21.37 he gave an admirable defense of his faith. 00:07:21.40\00:07:23.64 He was not a natural in his affections 00:07:23.67\00:07:27.71 and his interrelationships he wasn't... 00:07:27.74\00:07:30.71 He wouldn't sent he will lose his head, 00:07:30.75\00:07:33.52 he wouldn't go to the gallows I think he was, 00:07:33.55\00:07:35.15 he said was cut up but he didn't go there 00:07:35.18\00:07:38.49 because he made himself obnoxious to other people, 00:07:38.52\00:07:43.29 but at the end principle was so important that rationally 00:07:43.32\00:07:47.00 and in a very calculated principled way 00:07:47.03\00:07:50.30 he took the consequence. 00:07:50.33\00:07:52.37 That's really what I see as a true fundamentalist. 00:07:52.40\00:07:56.24 And I think he stood for fundamental principles. 00:07:56.27\00:08:02.34 Like I say, you know, other things in the context 00:08:02.38\00:08:05.68 historically, you know, works against it, 00:08:05.71\00:08:08.65 but just as a model of how that individual reacted. 00:08:08.68\00:08:12.15 Absolutely. 00:08:12.19\00:08:13.52 I hope that I could be the same way, 00:08:13.56\00:08:14.89 but we don't want to be bigoted, 00:08:14.92\00:08:16.42 we don't want to be a narrow-minded. 00:08:16.46\00:08:18.36 We don't want to be pejorative... 00:08:18.39\00:08:20.96 act pejoratively toward other people 00:08:21.00\00:08:23.20 but if we believe something, 00:08:23.23\00:08:26.00 we've really got to stick to it. 00:08:26.03\00:08:28.24 And I think that's the mistake of the modern world 00:08:28.27\00:08:30.91 and certainly the political world, 00:08:30.94\00:08:33.01 people flip-flopping these candidates at the moment, 00:08:33.04\00:08:36.18 it's almost dizzying. 00:08:36.21\00:08:38.35 It is... 00:08:39.58\00:08:40.95 In some regards what did they say yesterday, 00:08:40.98\00:08:43.45 well, today, oh, it stands for this today, 00:08:43.49\00:08:46.35 and the very least all 00:08:46.39\00:08:47.72 I could think of is George Orwell. 00:08:47.76\00:08:49.39 Yes. 00:08:49.42\00:08:50.76 Well, you know, in the journalistic world 00:08:50.79\00:08:52.59 they have this, and you know, 00:08:52.63\00:08:54.40 you're familiar with the term the term spin. 00:08:54.43\00:08:57.77 You know you can take... I call it lying. 00:08:57.80\00:09:01.10 Yes, that would be another word for it, 00:09:01.14\00:09:03.94 you see so much spin taking place today by, 00:09:03.97\00:09:07.74 by politicians and world leaders, 00:09:07.78\00:09:11.48 church leaders that that it's hard 00:09:11.51\00:09:14.12 to really believe anything anymore. 00:09:14.15\00:09:19.02 And so I think this is... 00:09:19.05\00:09:20.86 What does the Bible say, 00:09:20.89\00:09:22.22 "Deceive it if possible the very elect." 00:09:22.26\00:09:23.79 That's right. 00:09:23.83\00:09:25.29 And it's an epidemic that we're seeing in society 00:09:25.33\00:09:28.33 where lying is just so normalized 00:09:28.36\00:09:32.03 that politicians are not even called out for it anymore. 00:09:32.07\00:09:35.90 And if they are it's not that big of a deal. 00:09:35.94\00:09:39.81 Well, I remember reading about one candidate they said, 00:09:39.84\00:09:42.11 that they don't know that he consciously lies. 00:09:42.14\00:09:45.21 It's just that when he says something 00:09:45.25\00:09:47.48 that he wishes were true, 00:09:47.52\00:09:48.85 he comes to believe that's true. 00:09:48.88\00:09:51.65 Yes. 00:09:51.69\00:09:53.59 Well, we're all capable of that, 00:09:53.62\00:09:54.96 but you don't want that... 00:09:54.99\00:09:56.66 We're all capable of that, I'm not saying 00:09:56.69\00:09:58.39 that I operate that way, but you don't want to slide 00:09:58.43\00:10:01.53 into that sort of moral ambiguity. 00:10:01.56\00:10:03.57 Absolutely. 00:10:03.60\00:10:04.93 I mean that that's the way 00:10:04.97\00:10:06.53 that seems right unto a man it leads. 00:10:06.57\00:10:09.30 The end thereof is death. 00:10:09.34\00:10:11.17 Well, I was gonna put a secular interpretation 00:10:11.21\00:10:14.11 but I hesitated, 00:10:14.14\00:10:15.94 doesn't come out well in the end. 00:10:15.98\00:10:17.31 No, it doesn't. 00:10:17.35\00:10:18.68 And for politicians sooner or later 00:10:18.71\00:10:20.95 they will be caught out. 00:10:20.98\00:10:22.85 Although when we talk about religious liberty 00:10:22.88\00:10:26.05 and consequences the danger then is very often 00:10:26.09\00:10:29.46 and we see this happen now. 00:10:29.49\00:10:30.83 There is nothing current but I mean in our modern world, 00:10:30.86\00:10:33.80 often politicians deflect 00:10:33.83\00:10:36.06 or political powers deflect culpability to someone else. 00:10:36.10\00:10:39.23 Yeah. 00:10:39.27\00:10:40.64 And I do think in this war on terror 00:10:40.67\00:10:44.64 which has strong religious elements 00:10:44.67\00:10:47.94 that anybody that holds out against it 00:10:47.98\00:10:49.94 may soon find themselves 00:10:49.98\00:10:51.58 being cast as an enemy of the state 00:10:51.61\00:10:53.11 just because the state can't deal with the issue 00:10:53.15\00:10:55.85 and you're a problem. 00:10:55.88\00:10:57.22 So just like the Emperor Nero, 00:10:57.25\00:11:03.16 supposedly with the Christians in Rome. 00:11:03.19\00:11:04.86 That's right. Blamed them for the fire. 00:11:04.89\00:11:06.39 That's right. 00:11:06.43\00:11:08.03 Whether or not he set the fire 00:11:08.06\00:11:09.50 is he materially blamed them knowing not. 00:11:09.53\00:11:12.73 You know one of the things that I want to, 00:11:12.77\00:11:15.14 want to mention in the book Desire of Ages, 00:11:15.17\00:11:17.31 which is a commentary on the life of Jesus. 00:11:17.34\00:11:20.24 It's mentioned there that John the Baptist 00:11:20.28\00:11:22.34 with the student of humankind 00:11:22.38\00:11:25.31 and he studied human nature and I... 00:11:25.35\00:11:28.45 I believe it's very important for us to do the same thing 00:11:28.48\00:11:31.25 to study what's taking place in our world 00:11:31.29\00:11:34.22 as I mentioned earlier, so that what, 00:11:34.26\00:11:36.46 so that we can be better informed 00:11:36.49\00:11:38.76 in reaching hearts and minds, meeting their needs 00:11:38.79\00:11:41.63 where they're at and engage in a debate 00:11:41.66\00:11:44.83 that will reach humanity as a whole. 00:11:44.87\00:11:48.70 There was an old spiritual 00:11:48.74\00:11:50.31 that used to go something like this, 00:11:50.34\00:11:51.97 there's a man going around taking names. 00:11:52.01\00:11:55.94 Now you might think in our current context 00:11:55.98\00:11:58.81 that someone for voter registration 00:11:58.85\00:12:00.72 but I think the old song was talking about 00:12:00.75\00:12:03.59 something more like Revelation where it says, 00:12:03.62\00:12:06.72 "The books in heaven were opened 00:12:06.76\00:12:09.06 and people's lives were examined." 00:12:09.09\00:12:11.56 Of course in the great scheme of things 00:12:11.59\00:12:14.96 what we do and every action 00:12:15.00\00:12:17.50 and every development of human history is registered 00:12:17.53\00:12:21.24 and is knowable. 00:12:21.27\00:12:22.80 Unfortunately for us with the computer era 00:12:22.84\00:12:26.64 and explosion of "knowledge" 00:12:26.68\00:12:29.61 but in reality just an explosion 00:12:29.64\00:12:31.45 of information slash disinformation 00:12:31.48\00:12:34.92 is becoming harder and harder 00:12:34.95\00:12:37.32 for any one to really arrive at truth. 00:12:37.35\00:12:40.62 But it is imperative that each of us in seeking truth 00:12:40.66\00:12:45.96 and from a religious liberty perspective knowing 00:12:45.99\00:12:48.73 what is true religious liberty, what is a challenge to it 00:12:48.76\00:12:53.03 and how we maintain our religious liberty. 00:12:53.07\00:12:56.24 We need to adhere to the facts, seek out the facts, 00:12:56.27\00:13:00.14 look for knowledge, true knowledge, 00:13:00.18\00:13:03.14 and apply it in a way that will guarantee our freedom 00:13:03.18\00:13:07.62 and the freedom of those around us. 00:13:07.65\00:13:10.29 For Liberty Insider, I am Lincoln Steed. 00:13:11.79\00:13:15.62
