Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:28.36\00:00:30.23 This is the program bringing you analysis, 00:00:30.26\00:00:32.46 up-to-date news, and principles 00:00:32.49\00:00:35.13 so that you can judge 00:00:35.16\00:00:36.50 religious liberty developments in the US and around the world. 00:00:36.53\00:00:40.24 My name is Lincoln Steed and my guest is Andy Im. 00:00:40.27\00:00:46.41 I do a double take on your last name 00:00:46.44\00:00:48.64 because I have another contact 00:00:48.68\00:00:51.31 with the very similar last name, 00:00:51.35\00:00:52.68 but nobody quite like you and your job is very important 00:00:52.71\00:00:56.25 as communication director 00:00:56.28\00:00:58.49 for the Michigan Seventh-day Adventist church division. 00:00:58.52\00:01:02.42 And as I've said a number of times 00:01:02.46\00:01:04.33 before working with campus crusade for young people, 00:01:04.36\00:01:07.50 very significant with religious liberty. 00:01:07.53\00:01:11.33 And dealing with the young people, I know... 00:01:11.37\00:01:13.54 Well, I know you not only know how they operate, 00:01:13.57\00:01:16.24 you operate like them, 'cause you're still young. 00:01:16.27\00:01:18.71 I am. 00:01:18.74\00:01:20.08 And a characteristic of the younger generation 00:01:20.11\00:01:22.61 is to be very computer literate, isn't it? 00:01:22.64\00:01:25.35 Yes. 00:01:25.38\00:01:27.22 And I, myself use the computer from time to time, 00:01:27.25\00:01:31.15 and I realize that the world is at your fingertips. 00:01:31.19\00:01:33.39 Yeah, you just punch a couple of buttons 00:01:33.42\00:01:34.99 and it's like you're in the public library 00:01:35.02\00:01:37.69 or better videos, and blogs, 00:01:37.73\00:01:41.20 and music whatever you want. 00:01:41.23\00:01:45.77 Is this information conduit to the younger generation? 00:01:45.80\00:01:51.81 Is it working to their advantage or ours? 00:01:51.84\00:01:54.68 What's your judgment on this? 00:01:54.71\00:01:56.71 I think the access to the information 00:01:56.75\00:01:59.15 can be both good and bad. 00:01:59.18\00:02:01.38 I think it's bad in the sense that people 00:02:01.42\00:02:06.22 or young people now can just pick and choose 00:02:06.25\00:02:08.32 what they want to hear. 00:02:08.36\00:02:10.16 And that's not good in the objective sense 00:02:10.19\00:02:12.83 because you're not getting a wide variety of use. 00:02:12.86\00:02:15.70 Now you can just pick and choose 00:02:15.73\00:02:17.57 what you want to hear. 00:02:17.60\00:02:19.23 And so that's not necessarily positive. 00:02:19.27\00:02:24.37 Another thing for example, 00:02:24.41\00:02:26.27 to give a specific example with YouTube, 00:02:26.31\00:02:29.84 you know, it's really clips, little sound bytes, 00:02:29.88\00:02:33.75 one minute clips of things 00:02:33.78\00:02:36.69 that various popular figures are saying 00:02:36.72\00:02:40.06 and, you know, they get millions of millions of hits. 00:02:40.09\00:02:43.32 And so that shift begins to shape 00:02:43.36\00:02:46.03 their views on a whole wide range of things 00:02:46.06\00:02:49.56 from politics to social norms and so forth and so there's... 00:02:49.60\00:02:55.14 I'd say a lot of dangerous or negative components to that. 00:02:55.17\00:03:01.58 Yup, I agree with your point. 00:03:01.61\00:03:03.35 Well, I'm a YouTube user as I drive to work. 00:03:03.38\00:03:05.75 I am too. Yes. 00:03:05.78\00:03:07.12 And I watch a... 00:03:07.15\00:03:08.48 Actually yesterday I watched a three hour documentary 00:03:08.52\00:03:11.25 on YouTube, they're not little clips... 00:03:11.29\00:03:13.86 It was a history of the czars in Russia. 00:03:13.89\00:03:18.46 I don't think it's the length so much, 00:03:18.49\00:03:20.36 I think it's what often is missing is context, 00:03:20.40\00:03:23.67 and it seems to me education is not just absorbing facts. 00:03:23.70\00:03:29.04 If that were the case then people 00:03:29.07\00:03:30.71 with photographic memories would rule the world. 00:03:30.74\00:03:33.88 But they don't because they don't necessarily 00:03:33.91\00:03:36.14 synthesize it correctly. 00:03:36.18\00:03:38.41 And a lot of the input 00:03:38.45\00:03:41.52 or the reaction to their information 00:03:41.55\00:03:43.59 or postings from other people. 00:03:43.62\00:03:47.86 And I think that's positively degrading of 00:03:47.89\00:03:51.09 from what I've seen of real knowledge, 00:03:51.13\00:03:54.63 but perhaps it's what the Bible says, 00:03:54.66\00:03:56.63 forever learning and never arriving at the truth. 00:03:56.67\00:04:00.34 But information, is it more accessible 00:04:00.37\00:04:02.74 than ever before, there's no question about that. 00:04:02.77\00:04:05.44 And I know you have a burden 00:04:05.47\00:04:07.14 as many in our religious liberty fraternity do 00:04:07.18\00:04:11.31 that we need to be careful about conspiracy theories. 00:04:11.35\00:04:14.92 Yes. 00:04:14.95\00:04:16.28 And there's no question, the internet exist 00:04:16.32\00:04:18.65 on conspiracy theories on one level, 00:04:18.69\00:04:20.76 it's not the only thing. 00:04:20.79\00:04:22.49 But if you're a conspiracy theorist, 00:04:22.52\00:04:25.89 that's the happy hunting ground. 00:04:25.93\00:04:28.66 That's right and it really satisfies 00:04:28.70\00:04:30.77 our curiosity for the sensational 00:04:30.80\00:04:35.24 and that kind of thing 00:04:35.27\00:04:36.67 and I think we need to ensure that as Christians 00:04:36.71\00:04:40.68 that doesn't become our message. 00:04:40.71\00:04:42.61 I have been to some gatherings if you're well aware, 00:04:42.64\00:04:47.42 then entire sermon was 00:04:47.45\00:04:48.92 just simply a conspiracy theory. 00:04:48.95\00:04:52.09 And I think that's dangerous. 00:04:52.12\00:04:53.56 You know there's a lot of redirect to today 00:04:53.59\00:04:55.99 of this anti mainstream media movement. 00:04:56.02\00:05:01.10 And I understand that, lot of times 00:05:01.13\00:05:03.40 the parent organizations of these news companies, 00:05:03.43\00:05:07.17 they do have agenda, it's no secret, 00:05:07.20\00:05:09.80 it's not a conspiracy that's widely understood. 00:05:09.84\00:05:13.71 The flip side of that is you also don't want 00:05:13.74\00:05:16.85 some 18 year old, 20 year old 00:05:16.88\00:05:19.68 and I'm not being pejorative to the age 00:05:19.71\00:05:23.22 but some young person sitting in a basement 00:05:23.25\00:05:27.72 and, you know, having millions of followers 00:05:27.76\00:05:31.13 and he's just ranting off his opinions on various events 00:05:31.16\00:05:36.40 whether it involves politics or other social concerns, 00:05:36.43\00:05:40.97 and so I think we need to be balanced... 00:05:41.00\00:05:43.30 Well, tell me... Yes, go ahead, yes. 00:05:43.34\00:05:46.07 I agree with you but it painted the sad picture there. 00:05:46.11\00:05:49.91 Does that differ very much from a frustrated... 00:05:49.94\00:05:54.18 I'm trying to think how to characterize the guy. 00:05:59.25\00:06:01.72 Frustrated revolutionary but it's not the best word 00:06:01.76\00:06:04.33 I was looking for sitting in prison, 00:06:04.36\00:06:06.73 writing a little crazy pamphlet 00:06:06.76\00:06:08.80 that disturbed the whole country. 00:06:08.83\00:06:11.43 Yeah. 00:06:11.47\00:06:12.80 I mean in essence that's what Adolf Hitler did 00:06:12.83\00:06:14.44 with Mein Kampf, same thing but now it's accessible to any, 00:06:14.47\00:06:19.04 not any but selected bloggers 00:06:19.07\00:06:21.88 who could get a big enough following. 00:06:21.91\00:06:23.61 Yeah. 00:06:23.65\00:06:24.98 The idea is probably just as crazy 00:06:25.01\00:06:26.61 but they hunt out there, there are fellows all around. 00:06:26.65\00:06:29.52 It's an interesting dynamic and I... 00:06:31.52\00:06:33.46 It is. 00:06:33.49\00:06:34.92 I don't think anyone quite yet knows what to make of it. 00:06:34.96\00:06:37.76 Yeah. 00:06:37.79\00:06:39.13 But from all that I can observe I don't really think 00:06:39.16\00:06:43.70 societal knowledge is much advance, 00:06:43.73\00:06:45.67 but information is available, 00:06:45.70\00:06:47.80 but understanding is obscure as ever. 00:06:47.84\00:06:52.41 Yeah. 00:06:52.44\00:06:53.78 I think as it with any discipline, 00:06:53.81\00:06:56.04 I believe very strongly that it's important to find out 00:06:56.08\00:07:00.85 who the players are in any given discussion. 00:07:00.88\00:07:04.79 There are editorial list, there are writers 00:07:04.82\00:07:08.89 who are respected within the field of journalism 00:07:08.92\00:07:12.26 that do their best to remain objective. 00:07:12.29\00:07:17.07 And of course there's no, as you and I know 00:07:17.10\00:07:18.80 there's no true objectivity when you're reporting on news, 00:07:18.83\00:07:23.71 people insert their viewpoint 00:07:23.74\00:07:25.37 and we're gonna be able to run away from that. 00:07:25.41\00:07:28.81 Even Christianity is a viewpoint, 00:07:28.84\00:07:31.68 you know, it is a biased viewpoint. 00:07:31.71\00:07:34.08 And so we just need to be responsible is my point. 00:07:34.12\00:07:40.49 And as far as religious liberty in being sensitive 00:07:40.52\00:07:43.69 to what's happening 00:07:43.73\00:07:45.43 in this regard around the world, 00:07:45.46\00:07:47.00 I think to go to many sources is good. 00:07:47.03\00:07:50.47 That's right. I have people that phone me up. 00:07:50.50\00:07:52.33 They are on some right wing religion does source 00:07:52.37\00:07:57.47 and of course they exaggerate everything 00:07:57.51\00:07:59.54 for fundraising if for nothing else. 00:07:59.57\00:08:01.01 Yeah. 00:08:01.04\00:08:02.38 And people can get a very skewed view. 00:08:02.41\00:08:04.31 And I originally came from Australia, 00:08:04.35\00:08:06.82 it was a long, long ago. 00:08:06.85\00:08:09.08 And I've been back many times. Yeah. 00:08:09.12\00:08:11.32 But that sort of gives me a look 00:08:11.35\00:08:14.09 from an outsider's viewpoint and it's very obvious, 00:08:14.12\00:08:17.36 most anyone outside the US knows 00:08:17.39\00:08:19.43 that the news is not very comprehensive 00:08:19.46\00:08:23.40 or balanced in the US. 00:08:23.43\00:08:24.93 And I don't think 00:08:24.97\00:08:26.30 that's particularly from design. 00:08:26.33\00:08:28.80 I think it's from several sources, 00:08:28.84\00:08:31.37 first of all this is a big enough country to be... 00:08:31.41\00:08:33.44 So many things happening, you get self absorbed, 00:08:33.48\00:08:36.61 so it's not very outward looking. 00:08:36.64\00:08:38.98 And then the news that it gets is filtered through 00:08:39.01\00:08:42.78 so many agencies and all, 00:08:42.82\00:08:44.89 and particularly in the US collared by 00:08:44.92\00:08:48.06 a besetting sin of America, 00:08:48.09\00:08:51.13 but it's also tied up to its great strength, 00:08:51.16\00:08:54.26 that we imagine that everybody else 00:08:54.30\00:08:56.23 thinks like us. 00:08:56.26\00:08:58.17 Else where in the world, 00:08:58.20\00:08:59.53 their thought process is a different... 00:08:59.57\00:09:01.04 Yeah. 00:09:01.07\00:09:02.47 Their reality norms are totally different. 00:09:02.50\00:09:04.94 They can say something that 00:09:04.97\00:09:06.41 even if it's translated accurately which is often not. 00:09:06.44\00:09:09.51 Yeah. 00:09:09.54\00:09:10.88 It can still mean something different to them than to us. 00:09:10.91\00:09:13.92 The way we get over it, I see it all the time. 00:09:13.95\00:09:15.95 Oh, he said that for domestic consumption 00:09:15.98\00:09:18.05 but he doesn't mean that. 00:09:18.09\00:09:20.69 Yeah. 00:09:20.72\00:09:22.06 That's not good but I think what's really going on 00:09:22.09\00:09:23.96 and I see this at work 00:09:23.99\00:09:25.89 is that with the computerization 00:09:25.93\00:09:29.50 revolution traditional print media 00:09:29.53\00:09:33.97 and news media is on hard times. 00:09:34.00\00:09:36.94 Yes. 00:09:36.97\00:09:38.31 Remember the Christian signs news service, 00:09:38.34\00:09:43.35 they monitor in that, oh, I had a business 00:09:43.38\00:09:44.95 cut-down to almost nothing. 00:09:44.98\00:09:47.88 And you can see signs of that 00:09:47.92\00:09:49.25 when you go to events in Washington. 00:09:49.28\00:09:50.99 There's not that many reporters, 00:09:51.02\00:09:53.36 they don't have the facility with them 00:09:53.39\00:09:56.39 and they don't have the time 00:09:56.42\00:09:58.19 or the charter to give on investigative journalism. 00:09:58.23\00:10:01.26 So they go to the meeting, 00:10:01.30\00:10:02.76 they come in the door, and there's the handout. 00:10:02.80\00:10:05.80 And I get those handouts and I will see them, 00:10:05.83\00:10:08.30 print it in the newspaper without comment, 00:10:08.34\00:10:10.37 you know, that's not really journalism 00:10:10.41\00:10:13.71 because the people in power 00:10:13.74\00:10:15.41 whether they're government leaders 00:10:15.44\00:10:16.78 or even church leaders, they love to you 00:10:16.81\00:10:18.78 to be promulgators of their viewpoint. 00:10:18.81\00:10:21.95 That's right. 00:10:21.98\00:10:23.32 It's in the questioning that you get to the truth. 00:10:23.35\00:10:25.02 Yeah. 00:10:25.05\00:10:26.39 So we have a lazy, I just put it 00:10:26.42\00:10:28.56 and of course there's no question 00:10:28.59\00:10:30.19 that more and more the universities 00:10:30.23\00:10:31.79 are pouring out people are of a secular mindset. 00:10:31.83\00:10:34.56 So the reporters themselves may have 00:10:34.60\00:10:38.60 somewhat biased against say religion. 00:10:38.63\00:10:41.47 But I don't think that's the main thing. 00:10:41.50\00:10:43.47 I think it's just the superficiality. 00:10:43.51\00:10:47.28 And then as we saw during right after 9/11, 00:10:47.31\00:10:52.21 there was self censorship in the US 00:10:52.25\00:10:54.25 that didn't really serve the US well. 00:10:54.28\00:10:57.92 I want to add to, you know, 00:10:57.95\00:10:59.62 'cause you mentioned the word superficial, 00:10:59.65\00:11:01.99 you know, ultimately the news organizations, 00:11:02.02\00:11:05.59 and bloggers, and so forth. 00:11:05.63\00:11:08.36 Ultimately they have an incentive 00:11:08.40\00:11:10.10 to either make money or to increase their audience. 00:11:10.13\00:11:14.47 And so lot of times, you know, lot of, 00:11:14.50\00:11:16.54 even many of the serious news organizations 00:11:16.57\00:11:19.34 are moving towards more entertainment news 00:11:19.37\00:11:22.71 and that kind of thing... 00:11:22.74\00:11:24.08 Oh, that's corrupting if it's part of their 00:11:24.11\00:11:27.25 'cause much time given to, 00:11:27.28\00:11:30.25 you know, some dog was shot, shot, 00:11:30.29\00:11:33.66 what, a pit-bull was shot in the neighborhood 00:11:33.69\00:11:36.66 because it went run amok. 00:11:36.69\00:11:38.23 than perhaps the genocide in Rwanda or something. 00:11:38.26\00:11:41.53 Exactly, exactly. 00:11:41.56\00:11:43.57 That is more of a phenomenon in the US to other countries. 00:11:43.60\00:11:46.50 I mean that's not unknown in other places 00:11:46.53\00:11:48.54 but there's a huge imbalance 00:11:48.57\00:11:50.77 and it largely is entertainment venue 00:11:50.81\00:11:55.41 but you can get the news if people want to... 00:11:55.44\00:11:57.95 Yeah. 00:11:57.98\00:11:59.31 I don't name newspapers 'cause that will throw biased 00:11:59.35\00:12:01.58 but there's some more serious news papers in the US... 00:12:01.62\00:12:04.45 And you can go online and different news services 00:12:04.49\00:12:08.49 from Holland, and Germany, BBC, even Russian TV. 00:12:08.52\00:12:15.20 Even if you allow it's biased, it's another viewpoint 00:12:15.23\00:12:17.67 then you can synthesize that with that... 00:12:17.70\00:12:20.04 One that's typically my practice 00:12:20.07\00:12:22.00 and I'm not saying people should follow what I do, 00:12:22.04\00:12:24.31 but I tend to read, you know, from organizations that, 00:12:24.34\00:12:30.91 you know, are right leaning or left leaning 00:12:30.95\00:12:33.21 or more moderate. 00:12:33.25\00:12:35.52 And then synthesize the information and data... 00:12:35.55\00:12:38.69 And then if you know how news works, 00:12:38.72\00:12:41.79 you can sort of seek through a lot of it. 00:12:41.82\00:12:43.53 That's right. 00:12:43.56\00:12:44.89 I've been to some demonstrations 00:12:44.93\00:12:46.26 that they might just be 50 people there. 00:12:46.29\00:12:47.63 Yeah. 00:12:47.66\00:12:49.00 And they'll have them cluster together 00:12:49.03\00:12:50.47 or else frame it where they're clustered together, 00:12:50.50\00:12:53.23 and you watch the evening news 00:12:53.27\00:12:54.87 and all you see in front of the camera, 00:12:54.90\00:12:56.24 milling, yelling people. 00:12:56.27\00:12:57.77 May be nothing around it, try if it's going by as normal. 00:12:57.81\00:13:00.91 So it can create huge misperception about 00:13:00.94\00:13:05.81 what's really going on. 00:13:05.85\00:13:07.25 It's not that it's factually wrong 00:13:07.28\00:13:08.62 but it's misrepresenting what went on. 00:13:08.65\00:13:10.92 What's really happening, absolutely. 00:13:10.95\00:13:12.89 But what troubled me more than anything 00:13:12.92\00:13:15.39 and I'm building to a point here. 00:13:15.42\00:13:18.06 After 9/11 and I don't think it would have mattered greatly 00:13:18.09\00:13:22.36 which administration were in charge. 00:13:22.40\00:13:26.03 But I think the one we had at the time, 00:13:26.07\00:13:29.10 had a certain vested interest in encouraging 00:13:29.14\00:13:31.61 some of the worst tendencies. 00:13:31.64\00:13:35.04 Hiding things and encouraging others. 00:13:35.08\00:13:37.81 And the media should have seen it, 00:13:37.85\00:13:40.82 they probably knew it but they didn't call it. 00:13:40.85\00:13:43.99 And some horrific things were not mentioned like one 00:13:44.02\00:13:47.12 that still sticks in my mind, the Washington Post a few days 00:13:47.16\00:13:52.59 after 9/11 ran a picture with a caption 00:13:52.63\00:13:57.23 but no comment of the brother of the then president shaking 00:13:57.27\00:14:01.64 Osama Bin Laden's brother's hand 00:14:01.67\00:14:03.91 just signed a big biz, 00:14:03.94\00:14:05.27 multimillion dollar business deal in Saudi Arabia. 00:14:05.31\00:14:09.34 That was it, no comment. 00:14:09.38\00:14:11.85 Normally that would be subject to a little question, 00:14:11.88\00:14:14.15 you know, how come they're still in business 00:14:14.18\00:14:15.75 with the family. 00:14:15.78\00:14:18.45 And, you know, the Republic didn't rise or fall on it 00:14:18.49\00:14:21.12 but to me it showed that there was reticence 00:14:21.16\00:14:24.43 to deal with real topics, thing, 00:14:24.46\00:14:26.13 some things went hands off. 00:14:26.16\00:14:27.50 Yeah. 00:14:27.53\00:14:28.86 And so we can say proudly we don't have censorship. 00:14:28.90\00:14:31.83 But why censor if you've created 00:14:31.87\00:14:34.04 the same thing through intimidation. 00:14:34.07\00:14:38.87 We'll be back after a short break, 00:14:38.91\00:14:40.48 stay with us. 00:14:40.51\00:14:41.84
