Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:06.57\00:00:08.34 Before the break with Andy, 00:00:08.37\00:00:10.71 we were talking about the world and the need to protect it. 00:00:10.74\00:00:15.04 And the pope of Rome, the bishop of Rome's 00:00:15.08\00:00:19.81 encyclical on the environment Laudato si'. 00:00:19.85\00:00:25.35 Most of it very good, right? Mm-hmm. 00:00:25.39\00:00:27.82 But I think you and I agreed that 00:00:27.86\00:00:29.46 in putting this as the matter of human survival 00:00:29.49\00:00:33.60 and then injecting his theological twist 00:00:33.63\00:00:37.07 toward the papal Sunday 00:00:37.10\00:00:40.90 which has a long historical tradition, 00:00:40.94\00:00:43.24 but really no solid biblical basis... 00:00:43.27\00:00:45.61 Mm-hmm. 00:00:45.64\00:00:47.18 The biblical basis they acknowledge 00:00:47.21\00:00:48.98 in Dominus Dies another document 00:00:49.01\00:00:53.15 and indeed here is the seventh day 00:00:53.18\00:00:56.15 Saturday Sabbath. 00:00:56.18\00:00:57.79 But he then applies it figuratively to Sunday. 00:00:57.82\00:01:00.86 Well, that's fine to do but that's not a biblical mandate. 00:01:00.89\00:01:04.49 Mm-hmm. 00:01:04.53\00:01:05.86 But with that accomplished, there's so much at stake 00:01:05.89\00:01:08.23 because the likelihood is that 00:01:08.26\00:01:10.57 they will be some global initiative 00:01:10.60\00:01:12.87 to follow through on this 00:01:12.90\00:01:14.44 and require this global rest 00:01:14.47\00:01:17.21 as a matter of sort of a daylight 00:01:17.24\00:01:21.48 saving of energy and resources. 00:01:21.51\00:01:24.88 Mm-hmm. 00:01:24.91\00:01:26.25 And so religious liberty I think is relevant here 00:01:26.28\00:01:28.98 because you're looking at some compulsion 00:01:29.02\00:01:33.49 for people on a particular religious viewpoint. 00:01:33.52\00:01:36.06 Mm-hmm. 00:01:36.09\00:01:37.86 Yeah, and I think he's bringing together 00:01:37.89\00:01:41.23 many groups of people that perhaps 00:01:41.26\00:01:44.27 you wouldn't typically identify as being religious, 00:01:44.30\00:01:47.84 for example the environment, anti materialism, 00:01:47.87\00:01:52.31 capitalism what have you, those, 00:01:52.34\00:01:54.44 those sentiments are typically associated with the Left, 00:01:54.48\00:01:58.48 and so he really is bringing together ideologies 00:01:58.51\00:02:03.95 that are very broad in their scope and reach, 00:02:03.99\00:02:09.26 and bringing them together 00:02:09.29\00:02:10.69 and unifying them under a religious garb. 00:02:10.73\00:02:13.53 Yeah. 00:02:13.56\00:02:15.76 I don't even fully understand it but historically 00:02:15.80\00:02:18.70 there has been a connection 00:02:18.73\00:02:20.07 between Roman Catholicism and leftist tendencies... 00:02:20.10\00:02:25.47 Mm-hmm. 00:02:25.51\00:02:27.31 Even in Italy itself, 00:02:27.34\00:02:32.11 their constitutional government had a constant flirtation 00:02:32.15\00:02:35.85 with the left wing politics, 00:02:35.88\00:02:38.72 so it seems to me 00:02:38.75\00:02:40.09 and I don't even know quite why 00:02:40.12\00:02:41.82 the Catholic theology and structure, 00:02:41.86\00:02:43.83 and governance breeds leftism 00:02:43.86\00:02:47.86 and indeed even communism... 00:02:47.90\00:02:49.70 Mm-hmm. 00:02:49.73\00:02:51.07 If you look at the world map, 00:02:51.10\00:02:54.50 communism sprung up in a lot of, 00:02:54.54\00:02:57.11 not Russia, of course a big exception 00:02:57.14\00:02:59.31 but in a lot of the communist, the Catholic areas. 00:02:59.34\00:03:05.01 Even Vietnam, 00:03:05.05\00:03:06.38 that was a communist regime there 00:03:06.41\00:03:08.68 with the French Catholic influence. 00:03:08.72\00:03:11.02 That's right. 00:03:11.05\00:03:12.42 And Rome doesn't like it. 00:03:12.45\00:03:14.26 So I'm not... 00:03:14.29\00:03:17.79 inappropriately identifying it. 00:03:17.83\00:03:19.89 Rome has fought against it 00:03:19.93\00:03:21.26 but there seems to be yin and yang effect there, 00:03:21.30\00:03:26.80 but do Christians do 00:03:26.84\00:03:29.24 as world citizens need to be environmentally concerned. 00:03:29.27\00:03:33.61 Seems to me we should. Yes. 00:03:33.64\00:03:35.78 The Bible calls us toward it. 00:03:35.81\00:03:37.85 And I've always thought so but 00:03:37.88\00:03:40.35 many of our fellow Adventists 00:03:40.38\00:03:41.75 don't see keeping the Sabbath is more than 00:03:41.78\00:03:44.19 just a sort of religious observance. 00:03:44.22\00:03:46.92 But it was intended to be in the cycle of work, and rest, 00:03:46.96\00:03:53.33 and through the Jubilee principle to be part of this 00:03:53.36\00:04:00.34 natural fellow period that precedes 00:04:00.37\00:04:02.84 the continuing fertility. 00:04:02.87\00:04:05.34 Mm-hmm. 00:04:05.37\00:04:07.44 Yeah, I think, you know, 00:04:07.48\00:04:11.31 it's the environment so politically charged 00:04:11.35\00:04:14.72 simply because, you know, 00:04:14.75\00:04:16.08 you have a lot of interest that 00:04:16.12\00:04:18.95 want to run their businesses 00:04:18.99\00:04:21.82 even at the expense of the environment. 00:04:21.86\00:04:24.89 And I think it's very fascinating to me 00:04:24.93\00:04:27.66 because a lot of what 00:04:27.70\00:04:29.66 the pope is stating is not necessarily 00:04:29.70\00:04:36.10 in agreement with traditional American values. 00:04:36.14\00:04:41.38 And, you know, 00:04:41.41\00:04:42.74 and specifically some on the right. 00:04:42.78\00:04:46.25 For example, issues like pro-business, 00:04:46.28\00:04:50.15 pro-natural fuel corporations and so forth. 00:04:50.19\00:04:56.76 And so there is... 00:04:56.79\00:04:59.83 You have the pope speaking out 00:04:59.86\00:05:03.10 in the ways that are in some ways 00:05:03.13\00:05:06.57 antagonistic to some of the American ideals 00:05:06.60\00:05:09.40 and it's very interesting to see 00:05:09.44\00:05:11.54 what's going to transpire in the months ahead. 00:05:11.57\00:05:15.14 Well, there's a huge shift taking place 00:05:15.18\00:05:19.48 and goodness knows the west and America is the epitome 00:05:19.51\00:05:24.55 that the west is in need of spiritual rejuvenation. 00:05:24.59\00:05:27.92 Mm-hmm. 00:05:27.96\00:05:29.69 But structurally it troubles me 00:05:29.72\00:05:31.83 because I love history. 00:05:31.86\00:05:33.19 Mm-hmm. 00:05:33.23\00:05:34.56 And the commerce and the cap, 00:05:34.60\00:05:39.73 "capitalism" in its best sense 00:05:39.77\00:05:42.97 mercantile dynamic mercantile interest, 00:05:43.00\00:05:47.68 that all flourished, and expanded, 00:05:47.71\00:05:50.21 and blossomed in a way hitherto unimagined 00:05:50.25\00:05:53.21 under the Protestant Reformation. 00:05:53.25\00:05:56.18 It was a byproduct of it, right? 00:05:56.22\00:05:58.89 And Rome was opposed to it, 00:05:58.92\00:06:01.42 and the United States in its early days as it, 00:06:01.46\00:06:04.76 as it exemplified these Protestant 00:06:04.79\00:06:06.76 tendencies and tinges 00:06:06.80\00:06:09.90 but it was never a Protestant government. 00:06:09.93\00:06:14.44 It also had a deep seed of suspicion of popery 00:06:14.47\00:06:18.57 as they called it, papism. 00:06:18.61\00:06:21.44 And they saw and I think with some good cause, 00:06:21.48\00:06:26.18 the papal system was really the antithesis 00:06:26.21\00:06:29.78 of what they were developing here. 00:06:29.82\00:06:32.95 And during the civil war when America is, 00:06:32.99\00:06:38.73 modern America as we know was emerging 00:06:38.76\00:06:40.76 in the battle between north and south. 00:06:40.80\00:06:43.53 The pope of Rome took a very antagonistic 00:06:43.57\00:06:46.47 cause to the north. 00:06:46.50\00:06:50.71 Did you notice if you've studied this speech, 00:06:50.74\00:06:52.71 he gives a three way sign to... 00:06:52.74\00:06:54.84 And in reality 00:07:01.65\00:07:06.09 it seems that Rome has noticed 00:07:06.12\00:07:09.09 that the Protestant nature now of America's disappeared 00:07:09.12\00:07:12.76 as Senator Santorum said recently, 00:07:12.79\00:07:15.96 Protestantism is absent in America. 00:07:16.00\00:07:18.90 Catholicism has the right to exist, 00:07:18.93\00:07:21.44 you and I know that, 00:07:21.47\00:07:22.84 but historically anti-Catholicism 00:07:22.87\00:07:26.34 would have free reign in America 00:07:26.37\00:07:28.31 which correctly at the time so it is the antithesis 00:07:28.34\00:07:32.18 of this new social and economical, 00:07:32.21\00:07:35.05 political experiment. 00:07:35.08\00:07:36.45 Mm-hmm. 00:07:36.48\00:07:37.82 So and lot is at play 00:07:37.85\00:07:40.99 when the present pope of Rome sort of comes 00:07:41.02\00:07:45.36 and criticizes America and so on. 00:07:45.39\00:07:48.13 It's his right to criticize 00:07:48.16\00:07:49.50 but there's a huge historical shift in America, 00:07:49.53\00:07:53.23 Protestant America should be on its guard, 00:07:53.27\00:07:56.24 not to restrict the pope 00:07:56.27\00:07:57.77 but to restrict its own responses 00:07:57.81\00:08:00.44 and attitudes in certain areas, 00:08:00.48\00:08:02.34 because we're vulnerable to many things 00:08:02.38\00:08:05.45 including the poison pill that Rome long ago embraced 00:08:05.48\00:08:09.72 that it's okay to force religious activity. 00:08:09.75\00:08:13.29 Mm-hmm. 00:08:13.32\00:08:15.76 That's what I think it play 00:08:15.79\00:08:17.13 in this whole discussion of the environment. 00:08:17.16\00:08:19.56 We should be environmentalist, 00:08:19.59\00:08:21.33 I think the Three Angles' Messages is that 00:08:21.36\00:08:23.73 Seventh-day Adventist, 00:08:23.77\00:08:25.10 you and I speak about and exemplify 00:08:25.13\00:08:27.60 and proclaim all the time. 00:08:27.64\00:08:30.21 That's a wonderful message of soon coming Christ 00:08:30.24\00:08:32.37 but it's a call to one of the creative god 00:08:32.41\00:08:34.98 implicit in that should be a concern for the environment. 00:08:35.01\00:08:38.15 That's right. That's right. 00:08:38.18\00:08:40.75 But it should be on those terms 00:08:40.78\00:08:42.62 not on a gender to control and to bring us 00:08:42.65\00:08:48.22 a conformity to another religious viewpoint. 00:08:48.26\00:08:50.53 Mm-hmm. 00:08:50.56\00:08:51.99 Well, and what's also interesting is 00:08:52.03\00:08:55.36 how this conformity, the incentive, 00:08:55.40\00:08:59.20 I might touch upon this earlier is financial. 00:08:59.23\00:09:03.34 And when we look at Revelation Chapter 13, 00:09:03.37\00:09:06.98 the issue of worship revolves around buying or selling. 00:09:07.01\00:09:12.61 And so you're seeing, you know, 00:09:12.65\00:09:17.49 movements taking place today 00:09:17.52\00:09:20.82 where if the government doesn't like what you're doing, 00:09:20.86\00:09:24.93 they'll use economic sanctions on other countries 00:09:24.96\00:09:28.73 as well as upon our own American institutions. 00:09:28.76\00:09:31.70 Well, he just said, he held up the coin, 00:09:31.73\00:09:33.07 his face is on this... 00:09:33.10\00:09:34.44 That's right. 00:09:34.47\00:09:35.80 This is a Rome's currency and this is not Rome 00:09:35.84\00:09:39.07 but in the United States the money is only money 00:09:39.11\00:09:41.18 because the government says it. 00:09:41.21\00:09:42.68 You're playing 00:09:42.71\00:09:44.05 in the government's neighborhood. 00:09:44.08\00:09:46.28 There is no value in that money. 00:09:46.31\00:09:47.88 It's only money because the government 00:09:47.92\00:09:49.92 authorizes that you use on interchange 00:09:49.95\00:09:52.29 and if the government withholds that authorization, 00:09:52.32\00:09:55.16 you can't buy or sell. 00:09:55.19\00:09:56.52 That's right. 00:09:56.56\00:09:57.89 It's very plain and apart from prophecy 00:09:57.93\00:10:01.00 we're clearly coming to a dynamic. 00:10:01.03\00:10:03.60 And it's well known 00:10:03.63\00:10:04.97 by many magazines, and articles, 00:10:05.00\00:10:06.57 and commentators have looked at it. 00:10:06.60\00:10:08.10 We're coming to a cashless society 00:10:08.14\00:10:10.34 sooner or rather than later, 00:10:10.37\00:10:12.51 we're coming to embedded chips 00:10:12.54\00:10:15.34 where you don't even have a credit card, 00:10:15.38\00:10:17.48 you just scan... 00:10:17.51\00:10:19.45 And if your DNA is de-authorized, 00:10:19.48\00:10:25.89 you don't get that grain of rice 00:10:25.92\00:10:29.92 either embedded or to eat. 00:10:29.96\00:10:31.76 That's right. That's right. 00:10:31.79\00:10:34.20 Interesting times that we're living in 00:10:34.23\00:10:36.46 but the environment is very important. 00:10:36.50\00:10:39.67 God created it. 00:10:39.70\00:10:41.04 We are to be custodians I'm thinking. 00:10:41.07\00:10:44.11 And true, good religious practice 00:10:44.14\00:10:46.88 on old true faith not, 00:10:46.91\00:10:48.61 you know, you and I can see 00:10:48.64\00:10:50.65 the Bible as the locus of truth 00:10:50.68\00:10:55.52 and focus for Jesus Christ. 00:10:55.55\00:10:58.65 But I think whether it's Buddhism, 00:10:58.69\00:11:00.12 Hinduism or even Islam in its most benign form 00:11:00.16\00:11:05.93 a true religion, it should respect his fellows 00:11:05.96\00:11:09.26 and protect the common environment that we live in. 00:11:09.30\00:11:12.97 That should be inherent in good religion 00:11:13.00\00:11:16.17 and without interference from other religions 00:11:16.20\00:11:19.51 or from faith leaders that compel us. 00:11:19.54\00:11:22.64 That's right. 00:11:22.68\00:11:24.05 You know, Matthew Chapter 24 speaks that 00:11:24.08\00:11:27.95 or it states that even the very elect 00:11:27.98\00:11:31.29 there's the potential for deception. 00:11:31.32\00:11:33.89 And even though 00:11:33.92\00:11:35.32 the pope and church leaders are endorsing 00:11:35.36\00:11:38.19 things that we as Christians agreed on like the environment, 00:11:38.23\00:11:42.26 anti-materialistic values, 00:11:42.30\00:11:44.23 we need to remember 00:11:44.27\00:11:45.83 that deception is very real 00:11:45.87\00:11:48.27 and we need to stand on the word of God. 00:11:48.30\00:11:51.57 There was an old spiritual 00:11:51.61\00:11:52.94 that used to go something like this, 00:11:52.97\00:11:54.74 there's a man going around taking names. 00:11:54.78\00:11:58.58 Now you might think in our current context 00:11:58.61\00:12:01.52 that someone for registration 00:12:01.55\00:12:03.49 but I think the old song was talking about 00:12:03.52\00:12:06.25 something more like Revelation where it says, 00:12:06.29\00:12:09.32 "The books in heaven were opened 00:12:09.36\00:12:11.33 and people's lives were examined." 00:12:11.36\00:12:14.00 Of course in the great scheme of things 00:12:14.03\00:12:17.53 what we do and every action 00:12:17.57\00:12:19.93 and every development of human history is registered 00:12:19.97\00:12:23.77 and is knowable. 00:12:23.81\00:12:25.21 Unfortunately for us with the computer era 00:12:25.24\00:12:29.04 and explosion of "knowledge" 00:12:29.08\00:12:32.01 but in reality just an explosion of information 00:12:32.05\00:12:35.35 slash disinformation is becoming harder and harder 00:12:35.38\00:12:39.55 for any one to really arrive at truth. 00:12:39.59\00:12:42.89 But it is imperative 00:12:42.92\00:12:45.33 that each of us in seeking truth 00:12:45.36\00:12:48.23 and from a religious liberty perspective 00:12:48.26\00:12:50.43 knowing what is true religious liberty, 00:12:50.47\00:12:53.30 what is a challenge to it 00:12:53.34\00:12:55.37 and how we maintain our religious liberty. 00:12:55.40\00:12:58.51 We need to adhere to the facts, 00:12:58.54\00:13:00.64 seek out the facts, 00:13:00.68\00:13:02.51 look for knowledge, true knowledge, 00:13:02.54\00:13:05.35 and apply it in a way that will guarantee our freedom 00:13:05.38\00:13:09.85 and the freedom of those around us. 00:13:09.88\00:13:12.05
