Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:29.06\00:00:31.13 This is the program that brings you news, views, 00:00:31.16\00:00:34.43 discussion, insights, 00:00:34.46\00:00:36.50 and information you need to know on religious liberty. 00:00:36.53\00:00:39.67 My name is Lincoln Steed, editor of Liberty Magazine 00:00:39.70\00:00:43.34 and my guest on the program is Andy Im. 00:00:43.37\00:00:48.24 You're a communications man, 00:00:48.28\00:00:52.21 working with the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Michigan, 00:00:52.25\00:00:54.98 and youth leader with Campus Ministry. 00:00:55.02\00:00:57.92 That's right. Let's talk about our world. 00:00:57.95\00:01:01.72 Yes, let's do it. I originally from Australia. 00:01:01.76\00:01:05.99 Your forebear's from Korea. Mm-hmm. 00:01:06.03\00:01:10.03 You know, this is the world where people move to and fro 00:01:10.07\00:01:13.77 and we more and more see it as a single entity, don't we? 00:01:13.80\00:01:16.44 Mm-hmm. 00:01:16.47\00:01:17.81 And so it wasn't a natural thing recently 00:01:17.84\00:01:21.54 when the pope of Rome, itself a city far away, 00:01:21.58\00:01:25.11 used to be the centre of the world 00:01:25.15\00:01:26.88 once upon a time but not now. 00:01:26.92\00:01:28.68 But the pope of Rome came up 00:01:28.72\00:01:30.72 with an encyclical on the environment. 00:01:30.75\00:01:34.06 It made sense to a lot of people, 00:01:34.09\00:01:35.42 don't you think? 00:01:35.46\00:01:36.79 Because he spoke about something 00:01:36.83\00:01:38.83 that's concerning to all of us. 00:01:38.86\00:01:40.96 We're in a global village, 00:01:41.00\00:01:42.76 a little sphere in the middle of space. 00:01:42.80\00:01:45.07 Mm-hmm. 00:01:45.10\00:01:46.43 And yet it just seems to be running down on us 00:01:46.47\00:01:48.40 pretty quick. 00:01:48.44\00:01:50.21 The Bible says, earth wheeze out like a gum, 00:01:50.24\00:01:52.74 waxes all like a gum, isn't it? 00:01:52.77\00:01:55.08 It does, yes. 00:01:55.11\00:01:56.44 And another text that impresses me, it says, 00:01:56.48\00:02:00.32 God is coming to destroy those that destroy the earth. 00:02:00.35\00:02:03.52 Mm-hmm. 00:02:03.55\00:02:05.05 I don't think that would have been said 00:02:05.09\00:02:06.55 if it wasn't as we've seen now 00:02:06.59\00:02:11.19 that mankind literally is able to destroy the world. 00:02:11.23\00:02:14.53 Mm-hmm. 00:02:14.56\00:02:15.90 And beyond just degradation through bad habits, 00:02:15.93\00:02:19.77 what if we have a nuclear war? 00:02:19.80\00:02:21.94 You know, is what we fear all of our lives, 00:02:21.97\00:02:25.57 would it take place between Russia and the US 00:02:25.61\00:02:28.24 and they shot off, 00:02:28.28\00:02:29.88 let's just say 10 percent of their nuclear arsenal, 00:02:29.91\00:02:32.25 we'll have nuclear winter here. 00:02:32.28\00:02:34.38 The world would effectively be destroyed. 00:02:34.42\00:02:36.55 Yes. 00:02:36.58\00:02:37.92 I do think that the environment, you know, 00:02:37.95\00:02:40.02 it's the political hot topic and so it's very, you know... 00:02:40.06\00:02:45.93 There was no planning there, was it a global warming? 00:02:45.96\00:02:48.40 No, no. I didn't mean it that way. 00:02:48.43\00:02:52.13 But the Bible's very clear that, you know, 00:02:52.17\00:02:54.70 we were created to be stewards of this earth. 00:02:54.74\00:02:57.94 And to dress it, to keep it, to maintain it. 00:02:57.97\00:03:02.84 Like as Adam in the garden, 00:03:02.88\00:03:04.21 it was his job to take care of it. 00:03:04.25\00:03:05.58 That's right, the original plan for this earth 00:03:05.61\00:03:09.15 and so I do think 00:03:09.18\00:03:10.85 that protecting the environment is something that's biblical. 00:03:10.89\00:03:14.59 And we as Christians should do our utmost 00:03:14.62\00:03:17.96 in protecting and so forth. 00:03:17.99\00:03:21.23 I'm also happy, for example, 00:03:21.26\00:03:24.47 and I'm not endorsing any political party here 00:03:24.50\00:03:27.07 but, you know, President Obama 00:03:27.10\00:03:28.54 is expanding the national parks. 00:03:28.57\00:03:32.01 And I'm one that appreciates the parks that we do have. 00:03:32.04\00:03:35.28 I just got back from the Grand Canyon 00:03:35.31\00:03:37.81 not too long ago 00:03:37.85\00:03:39.18 and what a beautiful, beautiful place, 00:03:39.21\00:03:41.48 and certainly I appreciate it because it's God, 00:03:41.52\00:03:45.42 of course that's result of the flood and so forth. 00:03:45.45\00:03:48.59 But at the same time and something so destructive, 00:03:48.62\00:03:52.53 there's also a beauty there. 00:03:52.56\00:03:54.43 You see there, the grandeur, the power of God as well. 00:03:54.46\00:03:58.20 It's almost beyond imagining how big that is. 00:03:58.23\00:04:00.90 It is. 00:04:00.94\00:04:02.27 That like gully to use a little word is through the... 00:04:02.30\00:04:05.91 It is. 00:04:05.94\00:04:08.54 May be it's something I should say, 00:04:08.58\00:04:11.15 for me the Grand Canyon has two moments. 00:04:11.18\00:04:14.08 When we first came from Australia, 00:04:14.12\00:04:15.52 my father board a car 00:04:15.55\00:04:17.52 and we drove across the US from west to east. 00:04:17.55\00:04:21.09 And we stopped at the Grand Canyon. 00:04:21.12\00:04:23.43 It was in November at a motel, we knew it was quite close. 00:04:23.46\00:04:30.17 We didn't realize till the next morning 00:04:30.20\00:04:31.80 when we woke up 00:04:31.83\00:04:33.17 and it has snowed the night before, 00:04:33.20\00:04:34.67 the edge of the Grand Canyon 00:04:34.70\00:04:36.04 was just behind our car we parked there. 00:04:36.07\00:04:40.31 And there's a little fence like 18 inches high back then 00:04:40.34\00:04:43.28 and here it dropped the way straight into the Grand Canyon. 00:04:43.31\00:04:45.41 Ain't that's something? 00:04:45.45\00:04:46.78 But for me the image that I'll never forget 00:04:46.82\00:04:49.75 is before 9/11 flying in a United wide-body plane, 00:04:49.78\00:04:55.66 it was a clear day 00:04:55.69\00:04:57.53 and the president was actually visiting the Grand Canyon. 00:04:57.56\00:05:00.96 And so the pilot told us about it 00:05:01.00\00:05:02.93 and pointed out the lodge on the rim, 00:05:02.96\00:05:06.77 that's in Grand Canyon where the president was. 00:05:06.80\00:05:09.17 And he says we're bit early, 00:05:09.20\00:05:10.54 we'll take a tour around the Grand Canyon. 00:05:10.57\00:05:13.31 And this plane just went on a big circle 00:05:13.34\00:05:16.68 around the Grand Canyon. 00:05:16.71\00:05:18.21 Wow! Nice. Quite low. 00:05:18.25\00:05:19.95 And it was a dream on that crystal clear day 00:05:19.98\00:05:22.75 with the cars there, with the president's entourage, 00:05:22.78\00:05:25.55 then president. 00:05:25.59\00:05:27.12 I forget who was to be honest. 00:05:27.16\00:05:31.26 And is something spectacular, a creation of God 00:05:31.29\00:05:37.67 as part of the punishment I guess of the earth 00:05:37.70\00:05:39.93 but still wonderful landmark that reminds us 00:05:39.97\00:05:42.80 of the grandeur in the size of God's creation. 00:05:42.84\00:05:45.44 That's right. 00:05:45.47\00:05:46.81 And, but yet all of that is at risk, 00:05:46.84\00:05:48.78 even the Grand Canyon. 00:05:48.81\00:05:50.25 You can read some dark articles about the rates of erosion 00:05:50.28\00:05:55.72 and the water changes 00:05:55.75\00:05:57.09 because of dams and all the rest. 00:05:57.12\00:05:58.59 Mm-hmm. 00:05:58.62\00:05:59.99 And of course these plants for mining near the rim 00:06:00.02\00:06:04.03 that could despoil it. 00:06:04.06\00:06:05.39 Mm-hmm. 00:06:05.43\00:06:06.76 So it's not inappropriate for people 00:06:06.80\00:06:08.13 to have an environmental concern, is it? 00:06:08.16\00:06:11.17 No, absolutely not. 00:06:11.20\00:06:12.53 And I think I took you a little bit off track 00:06:12.57\00:06:14.44 so I don't know maybe... 00:06:14.47\00:06:17.01 Well, no, I'm heading for the earth is at threat 00:06:17.04\00:06:21.91 and efforts that have been made to save it 00:06:21.94\00:06:26.28 and in particular in that vein, 00:06:26.31\00:06:28.55 a document the pope of Rome issued last year in 19... 00:06:28.58\00:06:34.69 sorry, 2006, 00:06:34.72\00:06:40.56 no when, no, sorry early in 2016. 00:06:40.60\00:06:43.00 Mm-hmm. Yes. I'm already thinking ahead. 00:06:43.03\00:06:45.47 For 17, Laudato si' it's called, 00:06:45.50\00:06:51.17 they're always in Latin. 00:06:51.21\00:06:52.87 But praise be to thee. I think it means literally. 00:06:52.91\00:06:56.14 But he addresses this issue and, you know, 00:06:56.18\00:06:58.48 I have to commend them on one level. 00:06:58.51\00:07:00.82 Mm-hmm. 00:07:00.85\00:07:02.18 Wonderful. Mm-hmm. 00:07:02.22\00:07:03.82 This is not inappropriate 00:07:03.85\00:07:05.19 for people of faith to speak of things 00:07:05.22\00:07:08.99 that concern the whole of humanity, 00:07:09.02\00:07:11.06 degradation of the earth. 00:07:11.09\00:07:13.29 And he threw in some good practical advice 00:07:13.33\00:07:16.63 as well as theological narrative. 00:07:16.67\00:07:19.77 But you've read the document, what did you see? 00:07:19.80\00:07:22.97 I wouldn't say that I read... 00:07:23.00\00:07:24.34 But you looked at it. 00:07:24.37\00:07:25.71 What jumped out of you from that document? 00:07:25.74\00:07:27.84 Well, it's, what struck out at me... 00:07:27.88\00:07:31.21 It's a long document for our viewers. 00:07:31.25\00:07:33.35 You can get a long one, 00:07:33.38\00:07:34.72 it's about 120 pages about their paging system, 00:07:34.75\00:07:38.19 a little book sized document. 00:07:38.22\00:07:40.72 I only read some sections of it 00:07:40.76\00:07:43.39 and certainly he is making attempt to unify the world. 00:07:43.43\00:07:49.16 It's directed to all people. 00:07:49.20\00:07:50.53 It's not just Catholics, not just Christians, 00:07:50.57\00:07:52.33 all peoples. 00:07:52.37\00:07:53.70 Yes, and I think 00:07:53.74\00:07:55.07 you're gonna have to refresh my memory a little bit 00:07:55.10\00:07:56.87 'cause it was some months ago that I read that document. 00:07:56.91\00:07:59.97 Oh, what caught my attention 00:08:00.01\00:08:01.74 because first of all I'm a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:08:01.78\00:08:04.98 This Seventh-day Sabbath is vital to me. 00:08:05.01\00:08:08.68 When you read the Bible literally, 00:08:08.72\00:08:11.32 and remember the history 00:08:11.35\00:08:13.05 of God's dealings with the Jews, 00:08:13.09\00:08:14.82 the Sabbath was central. 00:08:14.86\00:08:16.86 And the Sabbath as part of the Ten Commandments, 00:08:16.89\00:08:19.39 there's just no textual reason for it to be changed 00:08:19.43\00:08:25.53 even given to the Jews, 00:08:25.57\00:08:27.24 it said, remember, it wasn't, you know, 00:08:27.27\00:08:29.14 the Sabbath day is now a day I give to you. 00:08:29.17\00:08:31.81 It was the day that in the Genesis account, 00:08:31.84\00:08:35.81 God sanctified it. 00:08:35.84\00:08:37.18 They weren't Jewish back in... 00:08:37.21\00:08:39.31 Creation. Adam and Eve were not Jews. 00:08:39.35\00:08:42.48 That's right. 00:08:42.52\00:08:43.85 So it's... 00:08:43.89\00:08:45.22 Even though it's been done, 00:08:45.25\00:08:46.59 and even the pope of Rome has done it recently. 00:08:46.62\00:08:49.76 You say well, it's a Jewish Sabbath, 00:08:49.79\00:08:51.39 it's not really biblically true. 00:08:51.43\00:08:53.50 Mm-hmm. 00:08:53.53\00:08:54.86 It's just become true in these latter days 00:08:54.90\00:08:58.40 where Christians to differentiate 00:08:58.43\00:09:00.44 have gone to Sunday. 00:09:00.47\00:09:01.94 And so in this document 00:09:01.97\00:09:04.34 the pope seizes upon something very apt biblically. 00:09:04.37\00:09:09.04 He said this earth is wearing out, 00:09:09.08\00:09:12.01 we're despoiling this worth. 00:09:12.05\00:09:14.75 He says, it may collapse on us. 00:09:14.78\00:09:17.39 And he says, God, when He created man 00:09:17.42\00:09:20.99 understood that the earth needs to rest, 00:09:21.02\00:09:23.93 animals need to rest, 00:09:23.96\00:09:25.79 there's a rest cycle, and man needs to rest. 00:09:25.83\00:09:28.03 And then he recites the Seventh-day Sabbath 00:09:28.06\00:09:32.00 as part of this rest cycle. 00:09:32.03\00:09:33.80 And he applies it to the animals, 00:09:33.84\00:09:36.07 to the earth. 00:09:36.10\00:09:38.01 And several times in the text 00:09:38.04\00:09:39.87 and these may be had been sections that you saw. 00:09:39.91\00:09:42.41 He come backs to this biblical injunction, 00:09:42.44\00:09:45.91 the principle of rest even the Jew believe rest, 00:09:45.95\00:09:48.62 which just goes multiplying on the seven principle. 00:09:48.65\00:09:53.15 And it's all wonderful 00:09:53.19\00:09:54.52 and as the Seventh-day Adventist I thought great, 00:09:54.56\00:09:56.12 he has put it in there. 00:09:56.16\00:09:57.49 He's picked up the model. 00:09:57.53\00:09:59.69 The unfortunate thing is that then at the end, 00:09:59.73\00:10:04.67 the pope sort of moves that logic 00:10:04.70\00:10:07.04 of the seventh day Old Testament 00:10:07.07\00:10:10.01 quote Jewish Sabbath. 00:10:10.04\00:10:11.37 He moves and applies it to the Eucharistic Sunday. 00:10:11.41\00:10:16.58 Mm-hmm. 00:10:16.61\00:10:18.55 Well, he can do that as the figure of speech 00:10:18.58\00:10:20.55 but it's not really possible as the matter of theology. 00:10:20.58\00:10:24.29 And then, I think to myself this is not good 00:10:24.32\00:10:28.12 because here is a religious leader 00:10:28.16\00:10:30.76 moving into a secular area giving a solution, 00:10:30.79\00:10:36.16 more than a solution and imperative 00:10:36.20\00:10:38.33 that without which we will all die. 00:10:38.37\00:10:40.34 Mm-hmm. 00:10:40.37\00:10:41.70 And he's saying, we need to obey 00:10:41.74\00:10:43.44 the principle of the seventh, but he applies it to Sunday. 00:10:43.47\00:10:47.91 Mm-hmm. 00:10:47.94\00:10:49.28 And in a previous document 00:10:49.31\00:10:52.45 by his predecessor, 00:10:52.48\00:10:57.55 I'm trying to think what it was called, 00:10:57.59\00:11:01.49 that was given, that Benedict gave 00:11:01.52\00:11:03.76 to actually President Obama in 2008. 00:11:03.79\00:11:08.36 It was a document that addressed 00:11:08.40\00:11:09.90 all the world's problems and it said there, 00:11:09.93\00:11:12.93 was problems of economics and of capital, 00:11:12.97\00:11:15.97 labor and of national autonomy and so on. 00:11:16.00\00:11:19.17 And it said there 00:11:19.21\00:11:21.18 that there's a need for a global authority 00:11:21.21\00:11:24.55 with the power to act and to enforce. 00:11:24.58\00:11:27.88 So I don't have to guess up where they're coming from. 00:11:27.92\00:11:30.89 So here on the environment, when they lay it all out 00:11:30.92\00:11:34.46 and it's fulfilled and us obeying the rest cycle 00:11:34.49\00:11:39.13 that ends with Sunday, not the biblical Sabbath. 00:11:39.16\00:11:42.90 That's bad on the religious liberty level. 00:11:42.93\00:11:45.87 He can have whatever theology he likes. 00:11:45.90\00:11:47.77 Yeah. 00:11:47.80\00:11:49.14 On this program we can't restrict the Muslim, 00:11:49.17\00:11:51.57 or Hindu or variations of Christianity 00:11:51.61\00:11:55.01 for the different doctrines. 00:11:55.04\00:11:58.15 They have the right to be wrong 00:11:58.18\00:11:59.71 or I have the right to be wrong depending on your viewpoint. 00:11:59.75\00:12:02.18 That's right. 00:12:02.22\00:12:03.55 But you don't have the right to force it on people 00:12:03.59\00:12:06.35 and this is the grand scheme 00:12:06.39\00:12:09.22 to make it a matter of human survival 00:12:09.26\00:12:13.19 to do what he says. 00:12:13.23\00:12:14.80 So he doesn't need to say the next step 00:12:14.83\00:12:17.50 that if this is adopted and you don't go along with it, 00:12:17.53\00:12:20.00 you're an enemy of mankind. 00:12:20.04\00:12:21.67 Mm-hmm. 00:12:21.70\00:12:23.04 You know... The stakes are very high. 00:12:23.07\00:12:24.54 What's very interesting is that the logic 00:12:24.57\00:12:27.68 that is utilized is our good values 00:12:27.71\00:12:30.51 that the broad Christian community agrees with, 00:12:30.55\00:12:33.75 you know, we do need to rest. 00:12:33.78\00:12:35.12 Another thing that he's stating the pope 00:12:35.15\00:12:39.75 is how we need to move from a materialistic mentality 00:12:39.79\00:12:45.09 that the American dream has caused us 00:12:45.13\00:12:47.20 to focus too much on material wealth 00:12:47.23\00:12:51.27 and that kind of thing. 00:12:51.30\00:12:52.63 And we need to, we need to focus on the spiritual 00:12:52.67\00:12:55.94 and that's something that we as Christians... 00:12:55.97\00:12:57.74 Oh, this was very good. 00:12:57.77\00:12:59.11 He mostly mentioned in that, in his speech... 00:12:59.14\00:13:01.08 It followed from the document which picked up on the things 00:13:01.11\00:13:04.31 but that's when he became very direct in his speech 00:13:04.35\00:13:09.02 to Congress. 00:13:09.05\00:13:10.39 Yeah. 00:13:10.42\00:13:11.75 That did flow out of what he said 00:13:11.79\00:13:13.29 on the environment but he didn't say that much 00:13:13.32\00:13:16.66 on the materialism or he didn't, 00:13:16.69\00:13:18.03 at least didn't take direct swipes 00:13:18.06\00:13:20.53 at capitalism in modern life in the document. 00:13:20.56\00:13:27.20 No, not in that document but I... 00:13:27.24\00:13:28.64 In his speech in to Congress, absolutely. 00:13:28.67\00:13:30.41 And he certainly, you know, and I believe we as Christians, 00:13:30.44\00:13:34.18 you know, I preached a sermon not too long ago 00:13:34.21\00:13:37.05 about the American dream. 00:13:37.08\00:13:38.91 And we've kind of adopted that as a Christian goal 00:13:38.95\00:13:43.22 or end for all of humanity and especially us as Americans, 00:13:43.25\00:13:47.62 but I really think that we need to think hard 00:13:47.66\00:13:52.19 about some f these values 00:13:52.23\00:13:53.90 that are espoused by our culture. 00:13:53.93\00:13:58.50 And the pope is rightly pointing out 00:13:58.53\00:14:01.34 that we all have become too materialistic, 00:14:01.37\00:14:03.94 too, you know, driven by the accumulation of wealth 00:14:03.97\00:14:08.94 and that's the end in all of life. 00:14:08.98\00:14:12.58 And those are not values that the Bible endorses for example, 00:14:12.61\00:14:17.59 and so he is utilizing Christian principles 00:14:17.62\00:14:22.76 using these things 00:14:22.79\00:14:25.63 that we would all agree with for his own end. 00:14:25.66\00:14:31.63 We need to take a break on that, very good point. 00:14:31.67\00:14:34.10 We'll be back after short break. 00:14:34.14\00:14:35.70 Come back and we'll keep discussing 00:14:35.74\00:14:37.41 this view of the environment 00:14:37.44\00:14:39.67 and religious liberty implications. 00:14:39.71\00:14:44.18 Stay with us. 00:14:44.21\00:14:45.55
