Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:28.52\00:00:30.83 This is a program bringing you some discussion, 00:00:30.86\00:00:33.60 news, information analysis on religious liberty events 00:00:33.63\00:00:38.50 in the United States and around the world. 00:00:38.53\00:00:40.27 My name is Lincoln Steed, Editor of Liberty Magazine 00:00:40.30\00:00:44.27 and my guest on this program is Andy Im. 00:00:44.31\00:00:49.48 Communication Director 00:00:49.51\00:00:50.85 for the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:00:50.88\00:00:52.48 in the Michigan area. 00:00:52.51\00:00:53.92 Beyond that I think they're telling me, 00:00:53.95\00:00:56.55 you're taking a leading role in campus ministries 00:00:56.58\00:00:59.35 for young people. 00:00:59.39\00:01:02.02 And like many of us, 00:01:02.06\00:01:03.93 you've been studying the world 00:01:03.96\00:01:06.33 and the growing conflict 00:01:06.36\00:01:07.80 apparently between Christianity and Islam. 00:01:07.83\00:01:10.67 And I want to talk a little bit about that with you. 00:01:10.70\00:01:13.94 But first I want to show some footage 00:01:13.97\00:01:17.21 of another interview that I did recently 00:01:17.24\00:01:19.47 with an Egyptian Christian, 00:01:19.51\00:01:23.48 a Seventh-day Adventist leader who was visiting from Egypt, 00:01:23.51\00:01:27.62 in the United States 00:01:27.65\00:01:28.98 and we reviewed a little bit about 00:01:29.02\00:01:30.72 what had happened there recently. 00:01:30.75\00:01:32.85 Let's watch this. 00:01:32.89\00:01:34.22 Well Sobhi Hanna, 00:01:34.82\00:01:36.79 I hope the pronunciation is correct. 00:01:36.83\00:01:40.30 I'd like to welcome you to Liberty Insider. 00:01:40.33\00:01:43.13 This is a regular program that we record at 3ABN 00:01:43.16\00:01:45.97 but this is an irregular moment and a great privilege for me. 00:01:46.00\00:01:49.97 You're from Egypt... Yes, I am. 00:01:50.01\00:01:51.84 An evangelism coordinator there, 00:01:51.87\00:01:53.78 working with the Seventh-day Adventist Church... 00:01:53.81\00:01:55.18 Yes. 00:01:55.21\00:01:56.54 And I'd like to discuss with you for a few minutes, 00:01:56.58\00:01:59.78 not just your job but what is the situation 00:01:59.81\00:02:02.42 for people of faith 00:02:02.45\00:02:03.85 and the religious interactions in Egypt 00:02:03.89\00:02:06.55 since the so called Arab Spring. 00:02:06.59\00:02:10.69 It hasn't been business as usual, has it? 00:02:10.73\00:02:13.80 I'm very happy to be here 00:02:13.83\00:02:15.30 and I'm very thankful for this interview. 00:02:15.33\00:02:19.47 The situation in Egypt is improving little bit. 00:02:19.50\00:02:22.57 We have more security 00:02:22.60\00:02:23.94 than we had at the time of Mursi. 00:02:23.97\00:02:27.51 President El-Sisi is doing very fine as far as security 00:02:27.54\00:02:31.55 almost all over Egypt. 00:02:31.58\00:02:34.32 We praise God for this security achievement 00:02:34.35\00:02:37.89 and progress and improvement in Egypt. 00:02:37.92\00:02:40.62 I live in Egypt, I live in a low place, 00:02:40.66\00:02:43.79 I was born in Upper Egypt but now I live in Cairo, 00:02:43.83\00:02:48.06 and I'm happy to be a member 00:02:48.10\00:02:50.10 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:02:50.13\00:02:52.03 Not all of our viewers may be quite aware 00:02:52.07\00:02:54.50 but the Arab Spring created an upheaval 00:02:54.54\00:02:57.17 in Egypt that overthrew... 00:02:57.21\00:02:59.94 Mubarak. 00:02:59.97\00:03:01.31 Mubarak, Hosni Mubarak. Yes. 00:03:01.34\00:03:03.55 Then there were elections, and through popular elections, 00:03:03.58\00:03:07.45 a leader of the Muslim brotherhood... 00:03:07.48\00:03:10.39 Yes... 00:03:10.42\00:03:11.75 Mursi was elected 00:03:11.79\00:03:13.39 and then instability followed... 00:03:13.42\00:03:14.76 Yes. 00:03:14.79\00:03:16.12 There was some military coup 00:03:16.16\00:03:17.49 and General Sisi... 00:03:17.53\00:03:18.86 El-Sisi. 00:03:18.89\00:03:20.23 Has rule but now the dynamic 00:03:20.26\00:03:21.83 trouble of many people around the world 00:03:21.86\00:03:23.50 because it was not a democratic principle, 00:03:23.53\00:03:25.47 but as you say, I think it's obvious by now 00:03:25.50\00:03:28.77 that General Mursi has brought stability. 00:03:28.80\00:03:31.64 He seems... 00:03:31.67\00:03:33.01 General Sisi. 00:03:33.04\00:03:34.38 Sisi... Yes. 00:03:34.41\00:03:35.74 He seems very... 00:03:35.78\00:03:37.88 More direct. 00:03:37.91\00:03:39.25 Open to create freedoms for all people 00:03:39.28\00:03:40.98 and this is what we need to talk about. 00:03:41.02\00:03:44.52 Now, Egypt is a majority Muslim society, 00:03:44.55\00:03:47.96 so there's not really a problem 00:03:47.99\00:03:49.99 for religious practice of Muslims. 00:03:50.03\00:03:52.46 But the minorities like Christians... 00:03:52.49\00:03:53.83 Yes... 00:03:53.86\00:03:55.20 How are things going for Christians? 00:03:55.23\00:03:58.63 I know there's many Copts 00:03:58.67\00:04:00.00 who were the original Christians in Egypt. 00:04:00.04\00:04:01.87 Yes, the Copt, the Orthodox 00:04:01.90\00:04:06.88 represents the majority of the Christians. 00:04:06.91\00:04:09.28 We as the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:04:09.31\00:04:10.65 is very small in Egypt, 00:04:10.68\00:04:12.01 but we have been there for maybe 150 years now. 00:04:12.05\00:04:15.68 In fact, I'm the fourth generation Adventist. 00:04:15.72\00:04:18.49 Now, we should tell our viewers, you know, 00:04:18.52\00:04:20.39 you and I are Seventh-day Adventists. 00:04:20.42\00:04:22.32 The world leader of our Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:04:22.36\00:04:26.06 is a contemporary of mine. 00:04:26.09\00:04:27.43 I was in an academy with him, but he was born... 00:04:27.46\00:04:29.46 In Egypt. 00:04:29.50\00:04:30.83 And raised for a number of years in Egypt... 00:04:30.87\00:04:32.20 Eight years. 00:04:32.23\00:04:33.57 His parents were missionaries there... 00:04:33.60\00:04:34.94 Eight years and he speaks Arabic. 00:04:34.97\00:04:36.30 He speaks my language too. 00:04:36.34\00:04:37.67 Yeah, so our church has close familial relationships with... 00:04:37.71\00:04:40.68 I do believe 00:04:40.71\00:04:42.24 when General El-Sisi ousted Mursi, 00:04:42.28\00:04:46.01 it was the divine plan. 00:04:46.05\00:04:47.72 Of course Mursi, 00:04:47.75\00:04:49.08 it was impossible for him to continue in power. 00:04:49.12\00:04:51.95 Was very radical man and his supporters 00:04:51.99\00:04:54.96 were taking over in a very suppressive 00:04:54.99\00:04:57.13 and aggressive way. 00:04:57.16\00:04:59.09 In fact, I have three examples. 00:04:59.13\00:05:02.06 If you go to public or what we call here 00:05:02.10\00:05:04.67 state hospital in Upper Egypt, 00:05:04.70\00:05:08.20 the manager of that hospital was a Muslim brotherhood. 00:05:08.24\00:05:12.17 The Quran was there 24 hours and the patients couldn't sleep 00:05:12.21\00:05:16.64 and no one can talk one word, no one can protest, 00:05:16.68\00:05:20.32 was the president if he's think like him. 00:05:20.35\00:05:25.12 I've another example, 00:05:25.15\00:05:26.49 and another in the bank called National Bank of Egypt, 00:05:26.52\00:05:29.92 the Quran was there the whole day, 00:05:29.96\00:05:31.99 nobody can listen. 00:05:32.03\00:05:34.20 And then we have the third example, 00:05:34.23\00:05:35.96 called Syndicate of Applicants, 00:05:36.00\00:05:38.20 in the state called El Faiyum, 00:05:38.23\00:05:41.00 the Quran was there all the time. 00:05:41.04\00:05:43.54 I think it's very very unacceptable 00:05:43.57\00:05:45.77 when people are doing their work, 00:05:45.81\00:05:48.31 the noise is going on. 00:05:48.34\00:05:49.81 I think there's some evidence at least looking in 00:05:49.84\00:05:52.15 that the Muslim Brotherhood agenda was a little extreme 00:05:52.25\00:05:55.65 for even some Muslims because it's the most extreme, 00:05:55.68\00:05:58.65 it's really the ideology behind 00:05:58.69\00:06:01.36 radical Islamic movements all over the world, 00:06:01.39\00:06:03.53 including ISIS and Al-Qaeda, isn't it? 00:06:03.56\00:06:06.26 Yes. 00:06:06.29\00:06:07.63 It's the ideological beginnings of all of them. 00:06:07.66\00:06:10.97 So, me as a just national of Egypt, 00:06:11.00\00:06:14.27 I'm very happy for what El-Sisi did. 00:06:14.30\00:06:17.11 I support him, I love him, 00:06:17.14\00:06:19.84 and what he did is a divine plan 00:06:19.87\00:06:21.98 for it was impossible for Mursi to continue. 00:06:22.01\00:06:25.05 Well certainly, God can work through civil leaders... 00:06:25.08\00:06:27.32 Civil leaders, yes. 00:06:27.35\00:06:28.68 So, how has the present regime brought about 00:06:28.72\00:06:32.99 increased freedom for people of diverse faiths? 00:06:33.02\00:06:36.62 Being a moderate, 00:06:36.66\00:06:37.99 El-Sisi being a moderate person, 00:06:38.03\00:06:39.39 not a radical, this supports everything. 00:06:39.43\00:06:42.36 Now to get a permission to build a church 00:06:42.40\00:06:45.37 is much easier 00:06:45.40\00:06:46.74 than it was at the time of Mursi. 00:06:46.77\00:06:48.84 It is quicker. 00:06:48.87\00:06:50.67 In fact I have an example in my mind. 00:06:50.71\00:06:53.81 Someone wanted to build a church. 00:06:53.84\00:06:55.61 He waited for 25 years to have a permission to build, 00:06:55.64\00:06:59.11 25 years. 00:06:59.15\00:07:01.05 Another example, someone waited 8 years, 00:07:01.08\00:07:03.59 someone waited 7 years. 00:07:03.62\00:07:04.95 I know what it is in Egypt. 00:07:04.99\00:07:06.32 And when it's that long, 00:07:06.35\00:07:07.69 basically they're intending to stop it. 00:07:07.72\00:07:09.49 Yeah. 00:07:09.52\00:07:10.86 So what I'm saying now, 00:07:10.89\00:07:12.99 permission to build a church is... 00:07:13.03\00:07:14.96 Quick. 00:07:15.00\00:07:16.33 Quicker, is achieved. 00:07:16.36\00:07:18.47 And we do have more stability, 00:07:18.50\00:07:22.10 almost all over, just in one spot in Egypt 00:07:22.14\00:07:24.94 where there is no safety, that is North Sinai. 00:07:24.97\00:07:28.34 But from Alexandria to Aswan, all over Egypt, 00:07:28.38\00:07:31.61 that is 1,000 kilometer from Alexandria to Aswan, 00:07:31.65\00:07:34.88 everything is safe, 00:07:34.92\00:07:36.25 the police took over and everything is fine. 00:07:36.28\00:07:39.12 Now the Arab Spring began with some radical 00:07:39.15\00:07:43.02 Islamic groups bombing Christian churches, 00:07:43.06\00:07:45.23 I remember in Alexandria and a few other places... 00:07:45.26\00:07:47.83 Sixty six churches were badly burned. 00:07:47.86\00:07:51.20 Now these weren't necessarily government actions. 00:07:51.23\00:07:54.27 Now, you've explained 00:07:54.30\00:07:55.64 how Sisi is signaling an openness. 00:07:55.67\00:08:00.58 Do you feel this in the community 00:08:00.61\00:08:02.94 that the community attitudes have changed? 00:08:02.98\00:08:05.88 There's less harassment 00:08:05.91\00:08:08.92 directly to Christians by the community, 00:08:08.95\00:08:11.39 not by law, but just by neighbors 00:08:11.42\00:08:13.76 and attitudes of radical Muslim? 00:08:13.79\00:08:15.12 Yes, I do feel it very well 'cause the police took over, 00:08:15.16\00:08:19.19 the police is helping in everything. 00:08:19.23\00:08:21.70 We do believe it, 00:08:21.73\00:08:23.06 we only have a problem with inflation. 00:08:23.10\00:08:26.60 Our pound is losing much of its value. 00:08:26.63\00:08:29.54 This is the only sad thing in Egypt. 00:08:29.57\00:08:32.27 But as far as freedom, 00:08:32.31\00:08:34.71 as far as supporting the minorities, 00:08:34.74\00:08:36.61 there is much improvement and I'm happy with it. 00:08:36.64\00:08:41.65 Now Sisi made a very brave and bold statement 00:08:41.68\00:08:45.45 before I think some religious leaders. 00:08:45.49\00:08:48.42 He called for a reformation in Islam. 00:08:48.46\00:08:51.23 Yes, he did. 00:08:51.26\00:08:52.59 Do you think this is possible? 00:08:52.63\00:08:54.23 Do you see signs of a theological 00:08:54.26\00:08:59.70 and a social change in the dominant religion, 00:08:59.73\00:09:02.94 because any dominant religion has a sense of power 00:09:02.97\00:09:06.54 that can sometimes 00:09:06.57\00:09:07.91 be working against true religious freedom? 00:09:07.94\00:09:11.51 Exactly, I hope he achieves this very quickly 00:09:11.55\00:09:15.38 because people have religious blindness. 00:09:15.42\00:09:19.22 Religious drought, religious ignorance, 00:09:19.25\00:09:23.76 you see and this causing a problem. 00:09:23.79\00:09:25.73 Someone screams early in the morning 00:09:25.76\00:09:27.50 and says he's praying, 00:09:27.53\00:09:28.90 and that makes everybody not to sleep. 00:09:28.93\00:09:32.10 I do believe, I hope he would succeed. 00:09:32.13\00:09:35.60 The parliament would be with him, 00:09:35.64\00:09:38.91 the army would be with him, 00:09:38.94\00:09:40.71 but the majority of the masses are not with him, 00:09:40.74\00:09:43.31 who are radical Muslims yet and they really hate him. 00:09:43.35\00:09:47.65 I hope he achieves reformation 00:09:47.68\00:09:49.98 and makes the Muslims a quiet religion, 00:09:50.02\00:09:52.75 not a religion of screaming five times a day. 00:09:52.79\00:09:56.32 Yeah. 00:09:56.36\00:09:57.69 I hope the improvement continues 00:09:57.73\00:09:59.49 because when you think about it, 00:09:59.53\00:10:00.86 Egypt well before Islamic days 00:10:00.90\00:10:03.87 was sort of a refuge for political 00:10:03.90\00:10:06.17 and religious people that were persecuted, 00:10:06.20\00:10:09.27 they would go there. 00:10:09.30\00:10:10.64 Remember, Jesus Himself with His parents 00:10:10.67\00:10:12.61 escaped from Herod to Egypt for a time of safety. 00:10:12.64\00:10:16.88 Yes, I do believe, yes. 00:10:16.91\00:10:18.25 So Egypt has a great tradition well before the present time 00:10:18.28\00:10:22.82 of sheltering people of diverse beliefs so... 00:10:22.85\00:10:25.49 Exactly, yes I agree with you. 00:10:25.52\00:10:26.86 So what you're saying is at least a glimmer of hope 00:10:26.89\00:10:29.22 in a very troubled time 00:10:29.26\00:10:30.73 in a particularly troubled part of the world 00:10:30.76\00:10:33.83 because, of course, next door, 00:10:33.86\00:10:36.77 Libya is not getting better... 00:10:36.80\00:10:39.43 And Syria. Yes. 00:10:39.47\00:10:41.30 And there are... You're in a bad neighborhood. 00:10:41.34\00:10:43.20 Yes. 00:10:43.24\00:10:44.57 Libya, Syria and Iraq. 00:10:44.61\00:10:46.27 In fact to have half a million Syrians refugees now in Egypt. 00:10:46.31\00:10:50.11 Half a million, have a lot of Libyans, 00:10:50.15\00:10:52.48 in fact they have two families living in the court where I am. 00:10:52.51\00:10:55.68 The building where I live... 00:10:55.72\00:10:57.75 These are stressful times, 00:10:57.79\00:10:59.22 I wish we could take several programs 00:10:59.25\00:11:01.99 to talk about this with you, 00:11:02.02\00:11:03.36 but I thought it was of some value 00:11:03.39\00:11:04.96 to include this on a regular Liberty Insider, 00:11:04.99\00:11:08.96 I'll be introducing this separately 00:11:09.00\00:11:10.97 and surrounding it with discussion. 00:11:11.00\00:11:12.63 But I want to thank you very much... 00:11:12.67\00:11:15.10 I do believe... Sobhi... 00:11:15.14\00:11:16.67 Yeah, Sobhi Hanna. 00:11:16.71\00:11:18.04 It's not a name I'm used to saying, 00:11:18.07\00:11:19.57 but I'll remember you for a long, long time... 00:11:19.61\00:11:21.28 Yes. 00:11:21.31\00:11:22.64 And I know our viewers will be praying 00:11:22.68\00:11:24.35 for your country 00:11:24.38\00:11:25.71 and not just for Christians but for all people of faith 00:11:25.75\00:11:28.68 that they will be able to follow their conscience 00:11:28.72\00:11:31.15 and worship their God in a way that is respectful. 00:11:31.19\00:11:35.32 Thank you for this conversation and shortened review. 00:11:35.36\00:11:38.76 Again I repeat my stance. 00:11:38.79\00:11:40.13 I support El-Sisi, I love Sisi, 00:11:40.16\00:11:42.76 I believe what he did is in harmony with heaven. 00:11:42.80\00:11:46.20 That's good to... 00:11:46.23\00:11:47.57 I love Sisi. To support just rulers. 00:11:47.60\00:11:49.14 If a ruler is upholding the principles of heaven, 00:11:49.17\00:11:52.67 God will bless him. 00:11:52.71\00:11:54.04 Thank you very much, God bless you. 00:11:54.08\00:11:56.11 Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:11:56.14\00:11:58.18 Before the break you were watching 00:11:58.21\00:12:02.02 a very interesting interview that I conducted 00:12:02.05\00:12:04.69 with a church leader from Egypt. 00:12:04.72\00:12:09.49 Now, Andy, you didn't see the video, 00:12:09.52\00:12:14.10 but you and I and indeed the whole world 00:12:14.13\00:12:17.47 are watching with increasing dismay, 00:12:17.50\00:12:20.74 what appears to be a conflict 00:12:20.77\00:12:22.50 between Islam and Christianity, 00:12:22.54\00:12:24.27 but what is clearly a cultural conflict 00:12:24.31\00:12:29.68 between Muslims usually from other countries 00:12:29.71\00:12:33.18 in the western society and they just don't see things 00:12:33.21\00:12:37.72 the same way and I know you've been troubled 00:12:37.75\00:12:42.22 to read about in France... 00:12:42.26\00:12:48.53 France. 00:12:48.56\00:12:49.90 The ban on the bikini... That's right... 00:12:49.93\00:12:53.47 Where they previously banned head coverings in schools 00:12:53.50\00:12:57.54 and now they've banned the bikini, 00:12:57.57\00:12:59.21 which doesn't look too bad. 00:12:59.24\00:13:01.38 So what's the problem? 00:13:01.41\00:13:02.74 Well, I think, yeah, and I know they have still, 00:13:02.78\00:13:06.68 they're banning the head coverings 00:13:06.72\00:13:08.88 in any Federal or State building, 00:13:08.92\00:13:13.32 but the bikini is essentially a full body swimsuit. 00:13:13.36\00:13:17.83 It's sort of like a 100 years ago 00:13:17.86\00:13:19.93 when they were the little carriages 00:13:19.96\00:13:22.63 that you'd wheel down to the beach 00:13:22.66\00:13:24.93 and then the women with this western bikini 00:13:24.97\00:13:27.94 would then step demurely into the water very much... 00:13:27.97\00:13:30.71 That's right. 00:13:30.74\00:13:32.57 And the justification for it 00:13:32.61\00:13:35.38 from the French government side is that, 00:13:35.41\00:13:40.58 it's the assumption that this is an imposition 00:13:40.62\00:13:43.25 on the freedoms of women, 00:13:43.28\00:13:45.79 which I don't necessarily disagree with. 00:13:45.82\00:13:48.56 Having said that I do believe 00:13:48.59\00:13:51.56 that there are many sincere Muslim women 00:13:51.59\00:13:53.96 who are conscientiously wanting to carry out 00:13:54.00\00:13:59.20 their religious conviction in wearing the burkini 00:13:59.23\00:14:04.11 because it's more modest and so forth. 00:14:04.14\00:14:07.24 It's very interesting, 00:14:07.28\00:14:08.61 I was reading a article 00:14:08.64\00:14:09.98 where it showed a group of nuns on the beach 00:14:10.01\00:14:15.02 and they were fully covered as well. 00:14:15.05\00:14:18.75 And so what I'm a little bit uncomfortable 00:14:18.79\00:14:21.29 with is the singling out 00:14:21.32\00:14:24.83 component of that law 00:14:24.86\00:14:26.96 because it is singling out Islam 00:14:27.00\00:14:29.76 or adherence of the Muslim religion 00:14:29.80\00:14:33.47 and not so much other religions 00:14:33.50\00:14:36.10 that may be wearing something similar. 00:14:36.14\00:14:38.54 And we don't want that as a matter of policy 00:14:38.57\00:14:41.41 from any government where they pick on a religion 00:14:41.44\00:14:43.85 or favor a particular religion... 00:14:43.88\00:14:45.41 That's right. 00:14:45.45\00:14:46.78 We need to take a break here, 00:14:46.82\00:14:48.15 I know it was already broken up by the video, 00:14:48.18\00:14:50.92 but let's take a short break 00:14:50.95\00:14:52.29 and we'll be back to continue this discussion. 00:14:52.32\00:14:54.42 Stay with us. 00:14:54.46\00:14:55.79
