Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:05.17\00:00:06.80 Before the break, we were about to enter into a big discussion 00:00:06.84\00:00:10.04 about the threat to religious liberty 00:00:10.07\00:00:12.61 in the United States from secularism, right? 00:00:12.64\00:00:14.94 Oh, yeah! 00:00:14.98\00:00:16.31 I was curious on your opinion on where it was coming from, 00:00:16.34\00:00:18.51 where you really saw the greatest threat? 00:00:18.55\00:00:20.28 I mean, the cycle of religious right 00:00:20.32\00:00:22.32 though they're politically active... 00:00:22.35\00:00:24.35 uh, religious groups. 00:00:24.39\00:00:27.46 I was hesitating with this, I was gonna say protestants, 00:00:27.49\00:00:30.43 but it's really a coalition of Catholic and Protestant. 00:00:30.46\00:00:32.89 But they are inclined to rail against 00:00:32.93\00:00:34.30 secularism and Pope Benedict, 00:00:34.33\00:00:38.00 in one of his pivotal speeches made secularism 00:00:38.03\00:00:41.57 the epitome of the threat facing. 00:00:41.60\00:00:43.24 I don't think so. 00:00:43.27\00:00:44.61 Secularism has always been there. 00:00:44.64\00:00:46.04 Yeah. 00:00:46.07\00:00:47.41 And actually Christianity found 00:00:47.44\00:00:48.94 that it could defeat secularism. 00:00:48.98\00:00:50.61 You know, the pagan or secularist Roman Empire 00:00:50.65\00:00:54.32 fell to Christianity. 00:00:54.35\00:00:56.48 Truths can overcome it, 00:00:56.52\00:00:57.85 but paganism really is directly antagonistic. 00:00:57.89\00:01:03.32 What, what we have seen in the United States, 00:01:03.36\00:01:06.29 and they are often throwing up a sort of the-- 00:01:06.33\00:01:09.06 is the Americans... 00:01:09.10\00:01:10.97 No, not Americans United. 00:01:11.00\00:01:12.70 The... 00:01:12.73\00:01:14.44 What's the group, Freedom from Religion Foundation. 00:01:14.47\00:01:16.94 Yes. 00:01:16.97\00:01:19.61 Which has acted in a spoiling row with the cases 00:01:19.64\00:01:22.01 that brought up to the Supreme Court. 00:01:22.04\00:01:23.65 They have made against the pledge of allegiance. 00:01:23.68\00:01:25.71 Right. 00:01:25.75\00:01:27.32 And probably think of some of the other aspects, 00:01:27.35\00:01:29.92 but thy just don't like any-- 00:01:29.95\00:01:31.29 I think like statues and stuff, that amount to images-- 00:01:31.32\00:01:32.65 Oh, yeah, they think of Muhammad statues, 00:01:32.69\00:01:34.29 they don't want religion in the public space at all. 00:01:34.32\00:01:36.62 Right. 00:01:36.66\00:01:37.99 The constitution guarantees that, 00:01:38.03\00:01:39.36 so they pretty much gonna fail, 00:01:39.39\00:01:41.03 but they are not a large movement. 00:01:41.06\00:01:42.50 Right. 00:01:42.53\00:01:43.87 It's just a few people 00:01:43.90\00:01:45.23 who are well funded that are pushing. 00:01:45.27\00:01:46.60 Right. 00:01:46.63\00:01:47.97 And secularism in the sense of indifference 00:01:48.00\00:01:49.64 is always the enemy of religion, 00:01:49.67\00:01:52.11 but I don't think that's the enemy of religious liberty. 00:01:52.14\00:01:54.81 Right. The legal structure remains. 00:01:54.84\00:01:58.25 No, I think the enemy of religious liberty 00:01:58.28\00:02:00.72 is what it always has been its religious people. 00:02:00.75\00:02:05.79 The enemy of the Protestantism was radical Catholicism. 00:02:05.82\00:02:09.72 The enemy of the Christians 00:02:09.76\00:02:12.29 in the holy land was radical Islam. 00:02:12.33\00:02:14.80 It could be that in the little Podunk town 00:02:14.83\00:02:17.03 with lot of prejudice. 00:02:17.07\00:02:18.40 The enemy of the Muslim shopkeeper is bigoted... 00:02:18.43\00:02:23.57 Baptist from the, you know, the corner store 00:02:23.61\00:02:25.67 where they get themselves ripped up. 00:02:25.71\00:02:27.04 Certainly there was a Baptist down south 00:02:27.08\00:02:28.54 wanted to burn the Quran just to show that he is free. 00:02:28.58\00:02:31.11 Yes. Well, that's a provocation. 00:02:31.15\00:02:32.48 Yes. 00:02:32.51\00:02:33.85 Ah, so now I don't think 00:02:33.88\00:02:35.22 secularism is the threat at all. 00:02:35.25\00:02:36.69 It's a challenge, but it's not an existential threat. 00:02:36.72\00:02:39.99 Right. 00:02:40.02\00:02:41.36 Its religion run amok with the sense of entitlement 00:02:41.39\00:02:43.86 which we mentioned elsewhere. 00:02:43.89\00:02:45.59 I see in the United States the more and more of the cases 00:02:45.63\00:02:49.06 that are being brought into public sphere 00:02:49.10\00:02:50.67 and even some up to the Supreme Court. 00:02:50.70\00:02:53.10 These are people with the strong religious view point 00:02:53.13\00:02:55.54 that they want to establish a narrow entitlement for it... 00:02:55.57\00:02:58.57 Right. 00:02:58.61\00:02:59.94 And to be empowered to do that 00:02:59.97\00:03:01.31 regardless of the fall out 00:03:01.34\00:03:02.68 not just on society but on other faiths. 00:03:02.71\00:03:04.28 Right. 00:03:04.31\00:03:05.65 I would agree with you on that and then I would add 00:03:05.68\00:03:08.08 a sort of religious indifference 00:03:08.12\00:03:10.79 by believers, "believers". 00:03:10.82\00:03:13.46 And so, you are allowing, you are seeing, you know, 00:03:13.49\00:03:15.69 this one individual that's having the entitlement 00:03:15.72\00:03:17.89 and others who maybe don't have that... 00:03:17.93\00:03:20.30 you know that strong personal relationship with Christ. 00:03:20.33\00:03:22.63 They may identify as religious believers, 00:03:22.66\00:03:24.80 but they don't have that, you know personal commitment 00:03:24.83\00:03:27.24 and so they're sort of indifferent 00:03:27.27\00:03:30.81 to whatever is happening around us. 00:03:30.84\00:03:32.17 Well, I'm back to the model that I have used a lot. 00:03:32.21\00:03:33.88 There's too much religion, and this religion run amok, 00:03:33.91\00:03:36.31 not enough spirituality. 00:03:36.34\00:03:37.68 Exactly. 00:03:37.71\00:03:39.05 Without spirituality, you know 00:03:39.08\00:03:41.18 things are can deteriorate rapidly 00:03:41.22\00:03:43.69 and Jesus wondering out loud 00:03:43.72\00:03:46.49 whether he was prophesying in these man, 00:03:46.52\00:03:49.32 God manifestation, but he wondered out loud 00:03:49.36\00:03:52.03 and He says when the Son of Mancomes, 00:03:52.06\00:03:53.50 will He find faith in the earth. 00:03:53.53\00:03:54.86 Ah, yes. 00:03:54.90\00:03:56.23 But if you can guarantee, you'll find lot of religion. 00:03:56.26\00:03:57.77 Right. 00:03:57.80\00:03:59.13 I mean people are superstitious till the last bit. 00:03:59.17\00:04:03.74 And what's interesting after 9/11 00:04:03.77\00:04:05.91 and so after the '80s 00:04:05.94\00:04:07.41 when the computerization of our society came 00:04:07.44\00:04:09.78 and the discoveries of the outer reaches of space, 00:04:09.81\00:04:13.42 at least we think we're reaching for them, 00:04:13.45\00:04:15.98 but with greater knowledge 00:04:16.02\00:04:17.82 curiously has come greater superstition. 00:04:17.85\00:04:21.22 Yes. 00:04:21.26\00:04:22.59 So at least religion in the general sense 00:04:22.62\00:04:24.99 or the reactionary sense of sort of the mysticism, 00:04:25.03\00:04:29.56 it's on the rise. 00:04:29.60\00:04:30.93 Yeah. But not spirituality. 00:04:30.97\00:04:32.60 But not spirituality. 00:04:32.63\00:04:33.97 And the way a part of spirituality 00:04:34.00\00:04:35.37 that I think is most important for our discussion, 00:04:35.40\00:04:38.11 public discussion is a spirituality 00:04:38.14\00:04:41.38 that moderates my human reaction 00:04:41.41\00:04:43.31 or human interactions 00:04:43.35\00:04:44.78 where I treat someone with dignity. 00:04:44.81\00:04:46.58 Yes. 00:04:46.61\00:04:47.95 And as the US Constitution even alludes to. 00:04:47.98\00:04:50.32 We should treat people as our fellow creatures 00:04:50.35\00:04:53.02 from the Creator God. 00:04:53.05\00:04:54.56 I mean that's automatically, if you think that through, 00:04:54.59\00:04:56.69 that should give great respect for all people. 00:04:56.73\00:04:59.36 Yeah. 00:04:59.39\00:05:00.73 Because I'm not inherently 00:05:00.76\00:05:02.10 of a different order than someone else, 00:05:02.13\00:05:03.80 I came from the same potter. 00:05:03.83\00:05:05.63 Absolutely. 00:05:05.67\00:05:07.47 Same clay, I shouldn't have any more rights 00:05:07.50\00:05:10.11 than anyone else. 00:05:10.14\00:05:11.47 Right. Not less either. 00:05:11.51\00:05:12.84 Not less, not more. So it gives dignity. 00:05:12.87\00:05:14.58 Yeah, and we shouldn't use others 00:05:14.61\00:05:16.75 to advantage ourselves, 00:05:16.78\00:05:18.78 you know, we should feel compassion for individuals 00:05:18.81\00:05:21.82 who haven't had the same opportunities that we have. 00:05:21.85\00:05:24.75 Absolutely. Like... 00:05:24.79\00:05:26.65 In the USA, I'm gonna, 00:05:26.69\00:05:28.52 when we talk about religious liberty 00:05:28.56\00:05:29.92 after we slapped down the US on certain fronts. 00:05:29.96\00:05:32.96 When you make a high stand, 00:05:32.99\00:05:34.33 you're more subject to criticism. 00:05:34.36\00:05:35.70 Yeah. 00:05:35.73\00:05:37.07 So it's not that the US is the worst country by any means, 00:05:37.10\00:05:38.47 but one of the worst things 00:05:38.50\00:05:39.83 that happened in the war on terror after 9/11, 00:05:39.87\00:05:43.94 and it's not really been publicly repudiated 00:05:43.97\00:05:47.91 was in Guantanamo 00:05:47.94\00:05:49.64 and at detention camp in Bagram. 00:05:49.68\00:05:53.21 They were to get at some of the detainees, 00:05:53.25\00:05:57.35 they were ripping up the Qurans, 00:05:57.39\00:05:59.12 flushing them down the toilets, spitting on and kicking it. 00:05:59.15\00:06:02.09 I mean, that is an incredible comment of grose, 00:06:02.12\00:06:06.29 not just inhumanity, 00:06:06.33\00:06:07.66 intolerance of another religious view point. 00:06:07.70\00:06:11.13 You can understand the emotion 00:06:11.17\00:06:12.97 which was perhaps misdirected in 00:06:13.00\00:06:14.37 because they didn't know that the person was guilty. 00:06:14.40\00:06:16.54 But let's just say, they blame that other religion 00:06:16.57\00:06:18.67 for something. 00:06:18.71\00:06:20.04 But then do what you would never want anyone 00:06:20.08\00:06:23.08 to do to your friend. 00:06:23.11\00:06:24.45 I mean, there is a total forgetfulness 00:06:24.48\00:06:26.35 of the religious dynamic. 00:06:26.38\00:06:27.72 Yeah, yeah. 00:06:27.75\00:06:29.08 Now it's a... 00:06:29.12\00:06:30.45 I like your phrase, it's religious entitlement, 00:06:30.49\00:06:33.96 I think that's absolutely important 00:06:33.99\00:06:35.89 because you know we are so, 00:06:35.92\00:06:38.46 it seems like we are holding on it so tight 00:06:38.49\00:06:40.13 and we want our own beliefs to be so protected 00:06:40.16\00:06:42.83 and yet we for some reason 00:06:42.86\00:06:44.97 there is this television that we are not seeing 00:06:45.00\00:06:48.77 or if we are ignoring the rights of other individuals 00:06:48.80\00:06:54.94 and we actually are justifying. 00:06:54.98\00:06:57.81 We're moving the rights from those individuals. 00:06:57.85\00:06:59.51 Well, it easily happens when, 00:06:59.55\00:07:01.35 if people don't have full spirituality 00:07:01.38\00:07:03.59 or true understanding of their faith. 00:07:03.62\00:07:05.85 They believe... and intermittently 00:07:05.89\00:07:07.92 if she is not gonna watch this program, 00:07:07.96\00:07:09.29 my wife invokes this often. 00:07:09.32\00:07:11.76 We have a difference, God's on my side. 00:07:11.79\00:07:13.93 You are damned 00:07:13.96\00:07:15.80 or you will have to answer before the judgment. 00:07:15.83\00:07:19.40 We need to fight that. 00:07:19.43\00:07:20.77 You can believe that in yourself 00:07:20.80\00:07:22.14 but the other person may think that too, 00:07:22.17\00:07:24.47 if they, you know, 00:07:24.51\00:07:25.84 if they have any commitment to their religion 00:07:25.87\00:07:28.94 and we should worry 00:07:28.98\00:07:31.65 that we are doing what God wants, 00:07:31.68\00:07:33.62 but not have the sense of entitlement 00:07:33.65\00:07:35.48 that I am God's instrument of justice, vengeance, 00:07:35.52\00:07:40.16 payback or whatever. 00:07:40.19\00:07:41.52 Yes. 00:07:41.56\00:07:42.89 That's a very dangerous attitude, 00:07:42.92\00:07:44.26 but religion through the ages 00:07:44.29\00:07:45.73 and some of it in the present day 00:07:45.76\00:07:48.26 follows true on that. 00:07:48.30\00:07:49.63 Yeah, I know...you know, we mentioned many times 00:07:49.66\00:07:51.83 this phrase of individual conscience 00:07:51.87\00:07:53.60 and that's exactly what it is. 00:07:53.64\00:07:55.24 How has the spirit motivated you? 00:07:55.27\00:07:57.21 Like I'll share something that, I'm sure you know about. 00:07:57.24\00:08:00.08 But most of our viewers don't. 00:08:00.11\00:08:02.08 Some of the Right Wing religious, political activist, 00:08:02.11\00:08:08.75 long description in the United States, 00:08:08.78\00:08:11.39 have been little frustrated of late, 00:08:11.42\00:08:13.82 getting legislative action 00:08:13.86\00:08:15.19 so they have taken, they're going to Africa 00:08:15.22\00:08:16.83 and feeding philosophies there to the different politicians. 00:08:16.86\00:08:19.93 And few years ago there was a spate 00:08:19.96\00:08:22.53 of newly empowered administrations 00:08:22.56\00:08:26.77 who would have been intuited by these people 00:08:26.80\00:08:28.60 and the track is very plain. 00:08:28.64\00:08:31.27 And so, they immediately enacted legislation 00:08:31.31\00:08:33.91 and in particular death penalty for unrepentant gays. 00:08:33.94\00:08:38.98 No, I am not pro gay by any stretch 00:08:39.01\00:08:41.85 as far as my religious sensibility 00:08:41.88\00:08:43.72 and what the Bible says. 00:08:43.75\00:08:45.22 But I mean what person of faith 00:08:45.25\00:08:47.76 is ever entitled to suggest that is a solution. 00:08:47.79\00:08:51.29 And, you know, 00:08:51.33\00:08:55.43 the track was run right back to the US, 00:08:55.46\00:08:57.27 which tells me that 00:08:57.30\00:08:58.87 if they had a similar track in the United States, 00:08:58.90\00:09:02.00 they would use legislation to-- 00:09:02.04\00:09:04.01 maybe not the death penalty 00:09:04.04\00:09:05.44 but to support probably very anti-Christian actions 00:09:05.47\00:09:10.25 toward non-believers 00:09:10.28\00:09:12.05 or people of the different morals. 00:09:12.08\00:09:14.22 Well, we've talked about, 00:09:14.25\00:09:15.58 when we were doing a show 00:09:15.62\00:09:17.32 on international religious freedom, 00:09:17.35\00:09:18.72 we talked about, 00:09:18.75\00:09:20.26 you know, different strains of other faiths 00:09:20.29\00:09:22.42 and within a faith one strain, 00:09:22.46\00:09:25.59 the more dominant and the one in power 00:09:25.63\00:09:27.73 not recognizing the rights of the individuals 00:09:27.76\00:09:31.47 within their own religious beliefs 00:09:31.50\00:09:33.34 and I think that's where we're sort of talking about here is, 00:09:33.37\00:09:36.00 you know, as you said we're all human beings, 00:09:36.04\00:09:38.07 we're all creations of God and yet not recognizing, 00:09:38.11\00:09:42.24 you know, sort of saying that 00:09:42.28\00:09:43.61 this person is a lesser individual 00:09:43.65\00:09:45.25 that they do not have the rights. 00:09:45.28\00:09:46.92 It happens easy, I'll pick on the group 00:09:46.95\00:09:51.22 that are begging to be picked out lately. 00:09:51.25\00:09:53.49 You know, Islam, but I'm making a trivial, 00:09:53.52\00:09:55.29 not a trivial point, but a point on a triviality. 00:09:55.32\00:09:57.93 There is a huge split within the Islamic world, 00:09:57.96\00:10:00.26 not the only one but the big overall split 00:10:00.30\00:10:02.43 is between Shia and Sunni 00:10:02.46\00:10:05.33 and they kill each other 00:10:05.37\00:10:06.70 different times quiet frequently. 00:10:06.74\00:10:09.04 What is the difference. It's not doctrinal. 00:10:09.07\00:10:12.11 It's purely over who was the next Khalif after Muhammad. 00:10:12.14\00:10:17.35 To an outside observer this is almost nothing. 00:10:17.45\00:10:20.25 I mean it's not of no consequence 00:10:20.28\00:10:23.75 but it doesn't seem like killing offense, 00:10:23.79\00:10:25.59 it doesn't seem that it should divide whole communities 00:10:25.62\00:10:28.42 but it just shows in this case of one religion, 00:10:28.46\00:10:31.06 but you can apply to any. 00:10:31.09\00:10:32.43 How very small things when you kick in the attitude of... 00:10:32.46\00:10:35.96 I've got God on my side, you are now an apostate 00:10:36.00\00:10:38.37 and this is what you would do. 00:10:38.40\00:10:40.70 And we need to guard against them 00:10:40.74\00:10:42.20 because it creeps into all faiths 00:10:42.24\00:10:44.37 and at the best of times, 00:10:44.41\00:10:46.78 but it will turn toxic when you allow the state 00:10:46.81\00:10:50.55 to follow through on the inclinations 00:10:50.58\00:10:53.95 of these people of faith. 00:10:53.98\00:10:55.35 Now Islam, it happens quick, more quickly, 00:10:55.38\00:10:57.85 it goes to critical mass more quickly 00:10:57.89\00:10:59.75 because they don't quiet... 00:10:59.79\00:11:01.56 Because of the Quran and Muhammad's injunctions, 00:11:01.59\00:11:04.03 they don't really understand separation of church and state, 00:11:04.06\00:11:06.19 so we have a wonderful protective mechanism 00:11:06.23\00:11:09.10 in the west and back to, you know, 00:11:09.13\00:11:11.83 exhibit A for Liberty Magazine and religious liberty. 00:11:11.87\00:11:14.47 Keep the wall high. Yeah. 00:11:14.50\00:11:16.57 Keep the separation strong. 00:11:16.60\00:11:18.07 Yeah, no, I completely agree with you. 00:11:18.11\00:11:19.77 I think going back to the beginning of our conversation 00:11:19.81\00:11:22.74 and going back to beginning of our country, 00:11:22.78\00:11:24.88 you know, the mechanisms that were put in place 00:11:24.91\00:11:28.12 by our founding fathers here in the United States 00:11:28.15\00:11:30.52 were so incredibly appropriate and something that, you know, 00:11:30.55\00:11:36.02 I'm so glad have state firm, we stay true to 00:11:36.06\00:11:39.03 because I think that those mechanisms, 00:11:39.06\00:11:40.76 those legal mechanisms of separations 00:11:40.80\00:11:42.73 of church in state 00:11:42.76\00:11:44.10 but also the recognition of religious freedom 00:11:44.13\00:11:46.43 for our individual citizens, 00:11:46.47\00:11:48.60 I think that is what is keeping us from, 00:11:48.64\00:11:52.34 you know, when we have these situations, 00:11:52.37\00:11:54.01 these emotional situations of conflict 00:11:54.04\00:11:56.08 between religions or between religion, 00:11:56.11\00:11:58.31 religious people and so I'm incredibly grateful for those. 00:11:58.35\00:12:03.28 When the president gives his state of the nation address, 00:12:03.32\00:12:06.69 of course there is a positive spin on everything 00:12:06.72\00:12:09.66 and we would think no less of him. 00:12:09.69\00:12:11.53 It needs to be as positive and as optimistic as possible. 00:12:11.56\00:12:15.56 And of course religious liberty, 00:12:15.60\00:12:17.40 when we speak of that, 00:12:17.43\00:12:18.77 we can be positive and optimistic 00:12:18.80\00:12:20.70 that in the United States particularly, 00:12:20.74\00:12:23.10 religious freedom is still guaranteed, 00:12:23.14\00:12:25.61 no matter what social dislocations 00:12:25.64\00:12:27.91 or local prejudices may exist. 00:12:27.94\00:12:30.41 But there is another side and I'm reminded 00:12:30.45\00:12:32.95 of what Ellen White once wrote 00:12:32.98\00:12:34.68 to the Seventh-day Adventist membership 00:12:34.72\00:12:36.89 in their early day, she said, you know, 00:12:36.92\00:12:39.15 if we could say it's not as bad as it appears, 00:12:39.19\00:12:42.06 that would be okay. 00:12:42.09\00:12:43.43 But she says, it's much, much worse 00:12:43.46\00:12:45.06 and on one level that is so with religious liberty 00:12:45.09\00:12:48.46 in the United States, 00:12:48.50\00:12:49.83 not because we are restricted 00:12:49.86\00:12:51.70 but because the concept of religious freedom 00:12:51.73\00:12:54.50 is rapidly changing to one of religious entitlement 00:12:54.54\00:12:58.91 and that is being fed by a sense of fear 00:12:58.94\00:13:02.14 at conflicts between religious faiths globally 00:13:02.18\00:13:05.35 that are migrating to the United States. 00:13:05.38\00:13:07.72 We must make sure that we cherish, 00:13:07.75\00:13:11.22 proclaim and advance religious liberty at any cost. 00:13:11.25\00:13:17.03 For liberty insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:13:17.06\00:13:20.86
