Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:05.27\00:00:07.04 Before the break 00:00:07.07\00:00:08.40 with NARLA executive director Melissa Reid, 00:00:08.44\00:00:12.41 and shame on you if you don't know 00:00:12.44\00:00:14.38 what NARLA was because it means you wasn't, 00:00:14.41\00:00:15.74 weren't watching-- 00:00:15.78\00:00:17.11 Didn't watch the first half of the show. 00:00:17.15\00:00:18.48 But NARLA is the North American Religious Liberty Association. 00:00:18.51\00:00:20.68 Yes. 00:00:20.72\00:00:22.05 And Melissa Reid is executive director. 00:00:22.08\00:00:23.72 We were talking generally about NARLA 00:00:23.75\00:00:26.55 and getting more particular about the need 00:00:26.59\00:00:28.69 to involve young people on college campuses. 00:00:28.72\00:00:31.43 Absolutely. 00:00:31.46\00:00:32.93 Well, you know, I'm really impressed about 00:00:32.96\00:00:37.47 when I see young people get involved. 00:00:37.50\00:00:39.40 We talked a little bit about their enthusiasm 00:00:39.43\00:00:41.34 and their passion but they also have 00:00:41.37\00:00:42.77 really great ideas that, 00:00:42.80\00:00:44.94 you know, and ways to sort of share the message 00:00:44.97\00:00:48.04 or grow the movement in way 00:00:48.08\00:00:49.84 that I really would never have though of or identified. 00:00:49.88\00:00:53.38 And so they're are great resource too. 00:00:53.42\00:00:56.12 And so, I don't think I shared the website before which is 00:00:56.15\00:00:59.65 www.ReligiousLiberty.info. 00:00:59.69\00:01:02.72 Not .com .info. So ReligiousLiberty.info. 00:01:02.76\00:01:06.53 And so, if you would like to become involved 00:01:06.56\00:01:09.33 or even establish a religious liberty chapter 00:01:09.36\00:01:12.77 in your community or on your campus, 00:01:12.80\00:01:15.30 please do contact us. 00:01:15.34\00:01:17.21 Another way for individuals-- 00:01:17.24\00:01:18.67 Please, that's a request. Yes. 00:01:18.71\00:01:21.11 We want the million of people out there 00:01:21.14\00:01:23.85 that potentially can watch this program 00:01:23.88\00:01:26.01 for them to respond and, you know, you could have 00:01:26.05\00:01:28.45 tens of thousands of little local groups 00:01:28.48\00:01:33.92 doing something practically and taken together, you know. 00:01:33.96\00:01:36.69 We hear about cells all the time 00:01:36.73\00:01:38.43 in the negative sense Al-Qaeda and all the rest of it. 00:01:38.46\00:01:41.20 They're destroying the world. 00:01:41.23\00:01:42.80 And there's not many people really 00:01:42.83\00:01:44.70 but their cell system increases their power. 00:01:44.73\00:01:47.84 Why not for something very good 00:01:47.87\00:01:49.87 literally have this ground root cell linkage 00:01:49.90\00:01:54.41 where just a few people here and a few people here 00:01:54.44\00:01:56.88 but together they can move legislative mountains 00:01:56.91\00:02:00.88 and change public attitudes for the good. 00:02:00.92\00:02:02.48 Absolutely. 00:02:02.52\00:02:03.85 It's just like our little organized church plants 00:02:03.89\00:02:05.42 that we are, you know, 00:02:05.45\00:02:06.79 we are doing across the United States. 00:02:06.82\00:02:10.13 And the other thing is, 00:02:10.16\00:02:12.36 you know, some people do not live in areas 00:02:12.39\00:02:15.20 where there are lot of other like minded believers, 00:02:15.23\00:02:17.63 they're in, you know, sort of more of an isolated situation 00:02:17.67\00:02:20.34 or, you know, they just even if, you know, 00:02:20.37\00:02:23.14 they want to connect with other communities, 00:02:23.17\00:02:25.87 with other outside individuals. 00:02:25.91\00:02:27.24 I remember as a young person being very interested 00:02:27.28\00:02:29.34 and I grew up in a small town 00:02:29.38\00:02:30.85 and I wanted to know what else was out there, 00:02:30.88\00:02:32.41 what else was out there. 00:02:32.45\00:02:33.78 And if there were other people 00:02:33.82\00:02:35.15 who were, you know, sort of seeing the world 00:02:35.18\00:02:37.35 or thinking the same things that I wasn't. 00:02:37.39\00:02:39.02 So we actually have hired on a social media coordinator, 00:02:39.05\00:02:42.59 someone who is actually working with Liberty 00:02:42.62\00:02:44.36 as well as with NARLA, 00:02:44.39\00:02:45.73 and again coordinating that message 00:02:45.76\00:02:47.40 in the sort of partnership. 00:02:47.43\00:02:49.73 And so, Facebook is a great way to be involved 00:02:49.76\00:02:53.60 in the NARLA community without, you know, 00:02:53.64\00:02:57.74 if you don't have a particular chapter 00:02:57.77\00:03:00.68 or it's just sort of, you know-- 00:03:00.71\00:03:02.04 Share information. Sharing information. 00:03:02.08\00:03:03.55 Dynamic Facebook work. Absolutely. 00:03:03.58\00:03:05.51 So, if you go to Facebook, facebook.com/narlafreedom, 00:03:05.55\00:03:11.55 so narlafreedom, facebook.com or you can just look up, 00:03:11.59\00:03:14.26 North America Religious Liberty Association 00:03:14.29\00:03:16.36 on Facebook and you can do the same, 00:03:16.39\00:03:18.76 you can find Liberty Magazine on the same 00:03:18.79\00:03:21.20 and sort of find a community of readers there as well. 00:03:21.23\00:03:23.93 But, so that's a real way, you know to-- 00:03:23.97\00:03:27.57 Let me ask you an interesting question. 00:03:27.60\00:03:28.97 I don't even know how you will answer this. 00:03:29.00\00:03:30.61 Okay. 00:03:30.64\00:03:31.97 NARLA began in the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:03:32.01\00:03:35.18 structurally we know that. 00:03:35.21\00:03:37.81 Is it designed to be self-limiting 00:03:37.85\00:03:40.08 or is it open for anyone? 00:03:40.12\00:03:42.55 Well, the way that it's designed 00:03:42.58\00:03:44.45 is that we adhere to the principles 00:03:44.49\00:03:45.99 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:03:46.02\00:03:47.36 and we take positions that are consistent 00:03:47.39\00:03:49.22 with the Seventh-day Adventist Church's positions. 00:03:49.26\00:03:51.46 On religious liberty related? On religious liberty. 00:03:51.49\00:03:53.56 Not on, it's not a-- 00:03:53.60\00:03:55.20 It's not a theological organization. 00:03:55.23\00:03:56.97 Theological other than there is an underlying 00:03:57.00\00:03:59.03 biblical theology of religious liberty of course. 00:03:59.07\00:04:01.50 Yes, absolutely. 00:04:01.54\00:04:02.87 So, it's not sectarian or it's not denominational? 00:04:02.90\00:04:06.01 Exactly. 00:04:06.04\00:04:07.38 And so we look to the church's position on particular, 00:04:07.41\00:04:11.88 you know, social issues 00:04:11.91\00:04:13.25 or religious liberty related issues 00:04:13.28\00:04:15.82 and then, you know, advocate in consistent manner. 00:04:15.85\00:04:18.85 So conceivably 00:04:18.89\00:04:20.22 someone not even connected with any particular church, 00:04:20.26\00:04:24.76 just interested in religious freedom 00:04:24.79\00:04:26.96 and the constitutional norms 00:04:27.00\00:04:29.06 that make United States special in its claims. 00:04:29.10\00:04:32.13 They can do that. Absolutely. Absolutely. 00:04:32.17\00:04:34.27 Yes, we'd love to have, 00:04:34.30\00:04:35.90 you know, those individuals involved. 00:04:35.94\00:04:37.61 You know, one of the things that I really enjoy 00:04:37.64\00:04:39.47 about the work that we do is that very often 00:04:39.51\00:04:42.81 we are involved in religious freedom coalitions. 00:04:42.84\00:04:45.41 Meaning that we work with other faith groups 00:04:45.45\00:04:47.78 who have completely different beliefs, 00:04:47.82\00:04:50.99 spiritual beliefs than we do, 00:04:51.02\00:04:52.92 but recognize the need to be respectful 00:04:52.95\00:04:55.72 of general religious freedom and freedom of conscience. 00:04:55.76\00:04:58.19 There not just so much respectful, 00:04:58.23\00:04:59.76 I mean, that goes with it 00:04:59.79\00:05:01.23 but we have common cause on certain issues. 00:05:01.26\00:05:03.23 Common cause on certain issues-- 00:05:03.26\00:05:04.60 So, you don't have to really have an opinion 00:05:04.63\00:05:06.43 say on Buddhism, or Hinduism-- 00:05:06.47\00:05:09.00 Yes. 00:05:09.04\00:05:10.37 To meet with the representative of that religion 00:05:10.41\00:05:12.57 in common cause 00:05:12.61\00:05:13.94 say for continued workplace accommodation for faith. 00:05:13.98\00:05:17.08 Absolutely. That's absolutely is. 00:05:17.11\00:05:19.05 And a lot of our own members misunderstand that. 00:05:19.08\00:05:21.05 They're very often suspicious 00:05:21.08\00:05:23.45 of a syncretistic accommodating sort of approach 00:05:23.49\00:05:27.06 between religions which we are not involved with. 00:05:27.09\00:05:30.49 But religious liberty historically, 00:05:30.53\00:05:32.09 it's been socially and in an advocacy sense 00:05:32.13\00:05:37.40 involved with all sorts of religious 00:05:37.43\00:05:39.50 and even irreligious group, so antireligious. 00:05:39.53\00:05:41.60 Some of them antireligious. Yeah. 00:05:41.64\00:05:43.51 And the thing is, you know, it's a reflection, 00:05:43.54\00:05:45.94 I like this about, you know, the work that we do 00:05:45.97\00:05:48.98 and the organizations that we're promoting 00:05:49.01\00:05:50.91 is that we recognize, 00:05:50.95\00:05:53.58 I mean, we just sort of marrying Christ example. 00:05:53.62\00:05:57.02 Right, God's example. 00:05:57.05\00:05:58.39 You know, this is our Creator who allows us to choose 00:05:58.42\00:06:01.92 whether to server Him or not, you know, 00:06:01.96\00:06:03.73 and so for us not to be mutually, you know, 00:06:03.76\00:06:07.40 respecting of other's individual beliefs. 00:06:07.43\00:06:10.23 You know, it would be inconsistent with our faith. 00:06:10.27\00:06:13.60 I've told people usually, privately and they look at me 00:06:13.64\00:06:17.24 with little bit of scan what I've said. 00:06:17.27\00:06:19.11 You know, I don't have to believe 00:06:19.14\00:06:20.98 your religion has any mirror whatsoever. 00:06:21.01\00:06:22.78 I can find it principally purer. 00:06:22.81\00:06:24.61 Right. 00:06:24.65\00:06:25.98 Not you as an human being 00:06:26.01\00:06:27.65 but I will defend your right to believe it to the death. 00:06:27.68\00:06:31.59 I mean, that's got to be 00:06:31.62\00:06:32.95 the principle of religious liberty. 00:06:32.99\00:06:34.32 It's tied up to respect for a fellow human being 00:06:34.36\00:06:36.12 but it doesn't in any sense mean 00:06:36.16\00:06:38.26 that you find their beliefs and you got to be 00:06:38.29\00:06:42.60 and I'm hope I'm right on this 00:06:42.63\00:06:43.97 because if you need to feel warm and fuzzy 00:06:44.00\00:06:46.63 that means you won't defend 00:06:46.67\00:06:48.84 as Liberty Magazine did once at an article 00:06:48.87\00:06:50.81 where they attacked the editor on 00:06:50.84\00:06:52.17 but they're defending the right of the Santeria occult 00:06:52.21\00:06:54.51 there in Miami 00:06:54.54\00:06:56.04 to sacrifice chickens in their backyard. 00:06:56.08\00:07:00.32 Well, you know, that's pretty animistic 00:07:00.35\00:07:04.72 out of the social mainline, but the same principle applies 00:07:04.75\00:07:08.89 even though I find it sort of bizarre. 00:07:08.92\00:07:12.36 So I shouldn't have to have a spectrum. 00:07:12.39\00:07:15.36 Well, I like this religion, so I could work with them 00:07:15.40\00:07:17.50 even though I wouldn't endorse it. 00:07:17.53\00:07:19.33 It's all the same to me. 00:07:19.37\00:07:21.54 Obviously, you want to work with groups and people 00:07:21.57\00:07:23.67 that on a human dynamic will cooperate 00:07:23.71\00:07:27.14 and have the common course. 00:07:27.18\00:07:28.98 But it's not necessary that we accept or endorse 00:07:29.01\00:07:32.45 whatever these people believe. 00:07:32.48\00:07:34.25 And we have wonderful coalitions. 00:07:34.28\00:07:36.18 I know the different coalitions that our church 00:07:36.22\00:07:39.22 and religious liberty department 00:07:39.25\00:07:40.66 and now NARLA is working with, 00:07:40.69\00:07:42.49 that whole spectrum 00:07:42.52\00:07:43.86 they are not just people of faith. 00:07:43.89\00:07:45.36 Some of the organizations are calculatedly secular 00:07:45.39\00:07:50.10 and in parts of what they are doing 00:07:50.13\00:07:51.73 and may even be against some religious expression. 00:07:51.77\00:07:56.14 This is the great irony 00:07:56.17\00:07:57.51 and I've talked to you privately. 00:07:57.54\00:07:59.61 We got to be a little bit careful 00:07:59.64\00:08:00.98 because on some issues, 00:08:01.01\00:08:03.31 we might find a fellow travelers 00:08:03.35\00:08:05.71 or the seculars who really want religion 00:08:05.75\00:08:07.65 out of the public's fear 00:08:07.68\00:08:09.38 but they will defend as we do, 00:08:09.42\00:08:11.92 the separation of church and state. 00:08:11.95\00:08:13.49 So, in that issue we might find 00:08:13.52\00:08:15.92 that we are in perfect agreement. 00:08:15.96\00:08:17.43 Yeah. 00:08:17.46\00:08:18.79 And I really like that, you know, 00:08:18.83\00:08:21.13 again we can be in a coalition with someone 00:08:21.16\00:08:24.53 or some organization on one issue 00:08:24.57\00:08:27.54 and not in others. 00:08:27.57\00:08:29.00 You know, we are seeing it differently at another issue 00:08:29.04\00:08:31.44 and yet we are still, you know, work together. 00:08:31.47\00:08:34.84 Absolutely. 00:08:34.88\00:08:36.21 And I'll throw the example in that 00:08:36.24\00:08:37.58 some of our own church members forget. 00:08:37.61\00:08:39.61 One of our main pioneers Ellen White 00:08:39.65\00:08:42.52 had almost a prophetic role in the church. 00:08:42.55\00:08:45.82 She was a great activist for temperance. 00:08:45.85\00:08:48.92 Was an in demand speaker 00:08:48.96\00:08:50.73 not just for her own church group 00:08:50.76\00:08:52.46 but the Millerites and then the Seventh-day Adventist 00:08:52.49\00:08:55.76 but the Women's Christian Temperance Union 00:08:55.80\00:08:57.97 and other church groups she went around talking. 00:08:58.00\00:09:00.17 Well, the WCTU were actually at the same time 00:09:00.20\00:09:04.24 fighting for a Sunday law. 00:09:04.27\00:09:05.97 She was adamantly opposed to. 00:09:06.01\00:09:08.24 But she didn't see any problem 00:09:08.28\00:09:09.64 in uniting with them 00:09:09.68\00:09:11.01 on what amounted to the prohibition circuit. 00:09:11.05\00:09:14.12 Right, and I remember her actually saying 00:09:14.15\00:09:16.58 in a letter to an individual 00:09:16.62\00:09:18.65 that it was important, you know, 00:09:18.69\00:09:20.76 that this was an opportunity to witness also. 00:09:20.79\00:09:23.73 You know, our continued involvement 00:09:23.76\00:09:25.56 in these sort of coalitions, 00:09:25.59\00:09:26.93 never had compromised our beliefs in anyway 00:09:26.96\00:09:29.16 but having that relationship and, you know, 00:09:29.20\00:09:31.50 perhaps the Holy Spirit will move individuals in that way 00:09:31.53\00:09:34.50 but again going back to the college campuses, 00:09:34.54\00:09:37.04 you know, we talked about this is sort of the time where, 00:09:37.07\00:09:39.84 where individuals are really developing 00:09:39.87\00:09:41.74 their social conscience, 00:09:41.78\00:09:43.11 but again the guidance is so important 00:09:43.14\00:09:45.01 and we talked about religious freedom 00:09:45.05\00:09:46.55 is part of our, you know, our social sphere right now, 00:09:46.58\00:09:50.39 it's in the news every day, but a lot of times 00:09:50.42\00:09:54.26 what I hear described as religious freedom 00:09:54.29\00:09:55.99 and religious liberty is on the news. 00:09:56.02\00:09:58.39 It's not really what I determine-- 00:09:58.43\00:09:59.79 Well, how I characterize it. 00:09:59.83\00:10:01.20 We've entered the phase when people, 00:10:01.23\00:10:03.30 many in this country they talk about religious entitlement. 00:10:03.33\00:10:05.97 Yes, and so-- 00:10:06.00\00:10:07.34 And that can be bad for those that don't share their view. 00:10:07.37\00:10:10.37 They want their religious views empowered 00:10:10.41\00:10:13.38 and perhaps even as we saw in high profile case, 00:10:13.41\00:10:16.58 I'm so empowered that I can actually stop you 00:10:16.61\00:10:18.91 exercising your religious views. 00:10:18.95\00:10:20.35 Yes. Yes. 00:10:20.38\00:10:21.72 One of our colleagues Brent Walker, 00:10:21.75\00:10:23.08 who works for the Baptist Joint Committee. 00:10:23.12\00:10:24.52 Again, one of the partners that we worked with for years. 00:10:24.55\00:10:27.19 He actually said, 00:10:27.22\00:10:29.46 he uses the phrase religious liberty for me 00:10:29.49\00:10:32.03 but not for thee. 00:10:32.06\00:10:33.80 You know, and it's the same sort of thing. 00:10:33.83\00:10:35.93 Yeah, and so I felt like, again these local chapters 00:10:35.96\00:10:39.93 and becoming involved in our social media community 00:10:39.97\00:10:42.94 is really a way of understanding 00:10:42.97\00:10:46.07 that this is something for everyone 00:10:46.11\00:10:47.94 and sometimes, you know, that can make us uncomfortable 00:10:47.98\00:10:50.85 but it's God's, it's the way that He has designed us. 00:10:50.88\00:10:54.32 But I do think as you work with young people in particular 00:10:54.35\00:10:57.19 and NARLA is not aids limited, you made that very clear. 00:10:57.22\00:10:59.15 Very clear, yes. 00:10:59.19\00:11:00.52 But with activating a whole new generation of young people, 00:11:00.56\00:11:03.16 that's very hopeful initiative I think. 00:11:03.19\00:11:07.03 Only good can come from that little payoff more and more 00:11:07.06\00:11:10.17 as those young people move into the mainstream. 00:11:10.20\00:11:12.07 Right. 00:11:12.10\00:11:13.44 Well, you know, if people are listening to the show today 00:11:13.47\00:11:15.47 and are at all interested, I certainly do encourage them 00:11:15.50\00:11:18.51 to visit our website, to visit the Facebook page. 00:11:18.54\00:11:21.51 And what can they do as a follower? 00:11:21.54\00:11:23.51 Yes. You know, recruit. 00:11:23.55\00:11:26.98 Well, what I'd love to see is for them 00:11:27.02\00:11:29.12 to actually come and attend one of our events. 00:11:29.15\00:11:31.89 You know, I talked a little bit 00:11:31.92\00:11:33.25 about our annual religious liberty summit that we have, 00:11:33.29\00:11:35.46 that we're holding in Washington DC every year. 00:11:35.49\00:11:38.53 That's gonna be happening this May 00:11:38.56\00:11:40.20 and I would encourage individuals 00:11:40.23\00:11:42.70 to come and join us and sort of, you know, 00:11:42.73\00:11:45.77 interact with fellow religious liberty advocates. 00:11:45.80\00:11:48.87 Hopefully learn a little bit. 00:11:48.90\00:11:50.24 Hopefully be inspired spiritually a little bit, 00:11:50.27\00:11:54.21 but I just really encourage you, you know, 00:11:54.24\00:11:56.85 pray about it and see if this is something 00:11:56.88\00:11:58.61 that you can make happen in your own life. 00:11:58.65\00:12:01.38 So, www.ReligiousLiberty.info, 00:12:01.42\00:12:05.25 info or on Facebook look for us as well. 00:12:05.29\00:12:10.19 I will remember Dr. Adrian Westney 00:12:10.23\00:12:13.09 in the many different meetings that he and I attended 00:12:13.13\00:12:16.06 invariably saying, 00:12:16.10\00:12:17.50 what about the North American Religious Liberty Association? 00:12:17.53\00:12:20.60 When can we really get behind to make it work? 00:12:20.64\00:12:23.71 Well, Dr. Adrian Westney is long dead now 00:12:23.74\00:12:26.78 which is a sad passage of a great pioneer. 00:12:26.81\00:12:30.31 But his dream is alive 00:12:30.35\00:12:33.01 and I want to tell Seventh-day Adventists that are watching, 00:12:33.05\00:12:35.72 that your church is now ready to mobilize you 00:12:35.75\00:12:39.19 for religious liberty. 00:12:39.22\00:12:40.56 I want to tell anyone of any faith, 00:12:40.59\00:12:42.89 as long as you are committed to upholding religious liberty, 00:12:42.92\00:12:47.16 the North American Religious Liberty Association 00:12:47.20\00:12:49.83 is your organization. 00:12:49.86\00:12:51.73 Join with it. 00:12:51.77\00:12:53.10 Make this a mighty army in a spiritual sense 00:12:53.13\00:12:56.00 that will proclaim liberty, 00:12:56.04\00:12:58.61 freedom from the housetops as far and as broad as we can 00:12:58.64\00:13:03.61 and be true activist to defend it. 00:13:03.65\00:13:06.68 Just speaking well of something is not always enough. 00:13:06.72\00:13:10.35 We need to do and to dare and to witness 00:13:10.39\00:13:13.32 and to write letters 00:13:13.36\00:13:14.69 and do whatever it takes to defend religious liberty. 00:13:14.72\00:13:18.66 For Liberty Insider, I'm Lincoln Steed. 00:13:18.69\00:13:21.86
