Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:07.30\00:00:09.40 Before the break 00:00:09.44\00:00:10.77 with Associate Editor of Liberty, Melissa Reid, 00:00:10.81\00:00:13.54 we were discussing something really big for liberty, right? 00:00:13.58\00:00:16.78 The campaign's report. Yes. 00:00:16.81\00:00:18.68 But the effort to make sure that all the good stuff we do 00:00:18.71\00:00:22.42 is enabled with donations, commitments, 00:00:22.45\00:00:25.55 even paid subscriptions 00:00:25.59\00:00:26.92 from a wider range of array of supporters, 00:00:26.96\00:00:31.06 not just Seventh-day Adventists who are our base 00:00:31.09\00:00:33.36 but anybody that believes in religious liberty. 00:00:33.40\00:00:35.30 Right. 00:00:35.33\00:00:36.67 I was thinking during break 00:00:36.70\00:00:38.03 we're actually a lot like this network 00:00:38.07\00:00:39.40 but lot like 3ABN. 00:00:39.43\00:00:40.77 Sure. 00:00:40.80\00:00:42.14 And that we've been so blessed by the favor of our supporters, 00:00:42.17\00:00:45.14 by our donors and just really have been able to be 00:00:45.17\00:00:49.74 a consistent presence 00:00:49.78\00:00:51.38 because of the generosity of our donors. 00:00:51.41\00:00:54.78 And so, just like this network I know that, 00:00:54.82\00:00:57.59 you know, we are incredibly grateful. 00:00:57.62\00:00:59.45 Liberty is now, since 1906 we've existed. 00:00:59.49\00:01:03.29 So over 100 years. 00:01:03.32\00:01:05.26 That's under its present name. Yes. 00:01:05.29\00:01:07.86 The Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:01:07.90\00:01:09.23 had actually began publishing a Religious Liberty Magazine 00:01:09.26\00:01:12.40 back in the about 1880. 00:01:12.43\00:01:14.90 Yeah. Yeah. 00:01:14.94\00:01:16.27 And there was a little bit of break 00:01:16.30\00:01:17.64 and then it restarted under the name Liberty. 00:01:17.67\00:01:20.18 But to have that continued presence 00:01:20.21\00:01:22.81 advocating for religious freedom, 00:01:22.84\00:01:24.68 it's just incredible. 00:01:24.71\00:01:26.05 And so I know you and I are both very grateful 00:01:26.08\00:01:28.82 that it's continued in that way. 00:01:28.85\00:01:30.29 Well, it reminds me of, I think I've ever seen the whole movie 00:01:30.32\00:01:34.26 but "Gone with the Wind" there is a line about 00:01:34.29\00:01:35.92 "I've always been dependent 00:01:35.96\00:01:37.29 on the kindnesses of strangers." 00:01:37.33\00:01:38.66 Kindness of strangers, that's exactly right. 00:01:38.69\00:01:40.66 But really that's not true about liberty 00:01:40.70\00:01:43.16 because all of our supporters are not strangers. 00:01:43.20\00:01:45.47 They are people of a common viewpoint. 00:01:45.50\00:01:48.40 Anybody that supports liberty shows that they think like us, 00:01:48.44\00:01:51.64 that they see the great importance of religious liberty 00:01:51.67\00:01:55.08 from every angle. 00:01:55.11\00:01:56.44 Yeah, absolutely. 00:01:56.48\00:01:57.81 What do we send out this year in our "pack?" 00:02:00.32\00:02:03.15 What are the types of materials that we think are necessary 00:02:03.18\00:02:06.72 for someone to really adequately support what we do? 00:02:06.76\00:02:09.82 Well, we try to really give people 00:02:09.86\00:02:11.89 anything that they feel like they could make use of 00:02:11.93\00:02:15.03 and support or promote in different ways 00:02:15.06\00:02:17.60 whatever ways they are comfortable. 00:02:17.63\00:02:18.97 For example this year we have a religious liberty camp. 00:02:19.00\00:02:22.57 We have a sermon. 00:02:22.60\00:02:23.94 Well, each year we have a new sermon composed. 00:02:23.97\00:02:25.54 That's true. I remember that sermon well. 00:02:25.57\00:02:26.91 Yes. I think you should. 00:02:26.94\00:02:28.71 Lincoln Steed is actually the individual 00:02:28.74\00:02:30.55 that wrote and preaches the sermon, so... 00:02:30.58\00:02:33.28 Which is not the norm. 00:02:33.31\00:02:34.65 We have rotating assignments 00:02:34.68\00:02:36.89 and we've had some very powerful sermons 00:02:36.92\00:02:40.46 done by different guest sermonizers. 00:02:40.49\00:02:43.39 Right. 00:02:43.43\00:02:44.76 Well, this is a great one this year 00:02:44.79\00:02:46.13 and again we make it available in print. 00:02:46.16\00:02:48.53 You can find it on our website to download either as a PDF. 00:02:48.56\00:02:53.60 You can just sort of preach it as it is 00:02:53.64\00:02:55.74 or you can, there's like a support version 00:02:55.77\00:02:59.67 where you can sort of make it your own as well. 00:02:59.71\00:03:01.88 Or we have a video version. 00:03:01.91\00:03:04.51 You've actually preached it and made it available 00:03:04.55\00:03:07.85 to download there online so you can show it, 00:03:07.88\00:03:10.19 you know, either during church, 00:03:10.22\00:03:12.82 you know, on the weekend or you can show it 00:03:12.85\00:03:15.22 at your midweek service in anticipation 00:03:15.26\00:03:18.26 but it's a really great resource. 00:03:18.29\00:03:20.56 Another thing that we have, I mentioned earlier, 00:03:20.60\00:03:22.96 we always try to highlight 00:03:23.00\00:03:24.33 a particular religious liberty case. 00:03:24.37\00:03:26.10 You know, really sort of show how religious discrimination 00:03:26.13\00:03:31.34 can affect individuals personally. 00:03:31.37\00:03:33.94 You know, what it does to an individual's life 00:03:33.98\00:03:36.75 and to their family's life. 00:03:36.78\00:03:38.11 And so we do that this year with a lady in Texas 00:03:38.15\00:03:41.98 who was working for an organization. 00:03:42.02\00:03:43.79 She actually was working at a kind of a call center. 00:03:43.82\00:03:46.59 So people living in the United States 00:03:46.62\00:03:49.16 have difficulty getting religious accommodation? 00:03:49.19\00:03:51.63 I thought this was the land of the free 00:03:51.66\00:03:53.60 and the brave and the, 00:03:53.63\00:03:56.16 you know, total religious liberty. 00:03:56.20\00:03:58.43 Right. Well-- 00:03:58.47\00:03:59.80 I'm being sarcastic but-- 00:03:59.83\00:04:01.17 I know. Yes. 00:04:01.20\00:04:02.54 But people need to realize that, 00:04:02.57\00:04:03.91 even though the constitution specifies that, 00:04:03.94\00:04:09.71 you know, no government involvement in religion 00:04:09.74\00:04:12.65 and then beyond that 00:04:12.68\00:04:14.02 the Civil Rights Legislation Act Title VII 00:04:14.05\00:04:16.58 says that you can't be discriminated 00:04:16.62\00:04:18.39 against on the basis of religion. 00:04:18.42\00:04:20.16 People are all the time. All the time. 00:04:20.19\00:04:22.26 And so we put up these examples, don't we, 00:04:22.29\00:04:24.86 usually during the campaign. 00:04:24.89\00:04:26.23 Right. 00:04:26.26\00:04:27.60 You know, we talk a lot about religious discrimination. 00:04:27.63\00:04:29.76 First of all as Americans, you know, 00:04:29.80\00:04:31.37 we are blessed with the laws and the freedoms that, 00:04:31.40\00:04:34.24 you know, that we enjoy and we certainly, you know, 00:04:34.27\00:04:36.97 look to other countries and we are seeing, 00:04:37.01\00:04:38.61 you know, religious persecution. 00:04:38.64\00:04:39.97 Oh, you're not to be equated. Yeah, absolutely. 00:04:40.01\00:04:41.48 I mean, there's not too many beheadings for apostasy 00:04:41.51\00:04:44.05 in the US, it's not at the moment. 00:04:44.08\00:04:45.41 Absolutely. Yeah. 00:04:45.45\00:04:46.78 And so, you know, we're grateful for what exist. 00:04:46.82\00:04:48.65 However as you are saying there are situations 00:04:48.68\00:04:51.59 where a person's religious beliefs or their faith 00:04:51.62\00:04:54.12 are not respected in the manner that they should be. 00:04:54.16\00:04:56.46 And so you talked a little bit about, you know, 00:04:56.49\00:04:58.43 the Civil Rights Legislation that occurred 00:04:58.46\00:05:01.10 and I think we just celebrated the 50 year anniversary of that 00:05:01.13\00:05:04.07 just recently. 00:05:04.10\00:05:05.70 But even under that law there are situations 00:05:05.73\00:05:09.54 that occur and actually 00:05:09.57\00:05:11.37 so the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission 00:05:11.41\00:05:14.61 which is sort of set up to monitor 00:05:14.64\00:05:16.81 those sorts of situations, 00:05:16.85\00:05:18.68 whether it's discriminations in the workplace, 00:05:18.71\00:05:20.78 whether it's based on gender or ethnicity 00:05:20.82\00:05:24.09 or race or religion. 00:05:24.12\00:05:26.59 Disability is another one. Disability is another one. 00:05:26.62\00:05:29.06 So we have noticed over the last few years 00:05:29.09\00:05:32.89 that while they are-- 00:05:32.93\00:05:35.10 that religious discrimination has been the category 00:05:35.13\00:05:38.40 of all of those sort of protective classes 00:05:38.43\00:05:40.27 that has really grown or skyrocketed 00:05:40.30\00:05:42.94 in the number of cases of people saying 00:05:42.97\00:05:46.78 this is happening to me in the workplace 00:05:46.81\00:05:48.64 which is really unfortunate. 00:05:48.68\00:05:50.38 We see this both in workday people are wanting to have 00:05:50.41\00:05:55.18 either, you know, the Sabbath or the Sunday off 00:05:55.22\00:05:57.65 to be able to attend church and to keep their Sabbath holy. 00:05:57.69\00:06:01.82 We also see this in the way that people dress. 00:06:01.86\00:06:04.76 Whether they wear, you know, particular outfit or, you know, 00:06:04.79\00:06:08.63 or grooming we talk about, 00:06:08.66\00:06:10.00 you know, they have particular-- 00:06:10.03\00:06:11.97 And that in the prisons. Yes. Absolutely. 00:06:12.00\00:06:15.10 So there are situations where, you know, 00:06:15.14\00:06:18.37 where people's conscience, you know, 00:06:18.41\00:06:21.64 are not respected in the way that they should. 00:06:21.68\00:06:24.18 And so in this particular situation 00:06:24.21\00:06:26.72 as I mention a lady was working in a call center 00:06:26.75\00:06:29.42 and I had worked there for many years 00:06:29.45\00:06:31.49 and had had her Sabbath. 00:06:31.52\00:06:34.49 She was a Seventh-day Adventist Church member. 00:06:34.52\00:06:36.06 She attended church on Saturday. 00:06:36.09\00:06:38.29 She had that respected, 00:06:38.33\00:06:39.66 it actually been a five day work week 00:06:39.69\00:06:41.43 and what happens that they actually became 00:06:41.46\00:06:43.20 a 24 hour call center. 00:06:43.23\00:06:45.00 And so things changed for her and, you know, it really, 00:06:45.03\00:06:50.91 one thing I love about telling these stories 00:06:50.94\00:06:52.94 and interacting with these individuals 00:06:52.97\00:06:54.54 is to see and hear from them 00:06:54.58\00:06:58.21 how the situation strengthened their faith. 00:06:58.25\00:07:01.48 You know, she said of course that there was very scary times 00:07:01.52\00:07:03.72 as they went through this process 00:07:03.75\00:07:05.09 working with, you know, with her employer 00:07:05.12\00:07:07.56 trying to get this accommodation. 00:07:07.59\00:07:09.66 You know, she, she said that, you know, 00:07:09.69\00:07:11.66 there was certainly times where she was a bit discouraged 00:07:11.69\00:07:14.00 but she said anytime she was discouraged 00:07:14.03\00:07:16.63 or anxious about the situation 00:07:16.67\00:07:19.37 something in her life where there was an individual, 00:07:19.40\00:07:21.90 not even I remember her telling me, 00:07:21.94\00:07:23.51 it wasn't even a close friend. 00:07:23.54\00:07:24.87 I met this leady and she is a very upbeat enthusiastic woman. 00:07:24.91\00:07:27.58 Oh, yes. You just see Christ radiating from her. 00:07:27.61\00:07:30.61 You know, she is, and-- 00:07:30.65\00:07:32.05 But this doesn't seem to have been 00:07:32.08\00:07:33.82 at least looking back on us, it's not a hardship. 00:07:33.85\00:07:36.12 She is so excited about this, in fact, 00:07:36.15\00:07:38.15 in her view things improve because of it. 00:07:38.19\00:07:40.89 The end result was not status quo, it was much better. 00:07:40.92\00:07:44.33 It was a situation where she actually, you know, 00:07:44.36\00:07:46.76 went through this whole warning process of losing her job 00:07:46.80\00:07:49.86 and actually eventually lost her job 00:07:49.90\00:07:51.93 but with working with the legal team 00:07:51.97\00:07:55.04 that was provided by our church, 00:07:55.07\00:07:58.31 she actually was reinstated to a better position. 00:07:58.34\00:08:03.55 And so it's incredible sort of the way that God loved her 00:08:03.58\00:08:08.98 and protected her throughout the process 00:08:09.02\00:08:10.82 and it was, she absolutely relied on Him and. 00:08:10.85\00:08:13.46 So that's why we call, before I call. 00:08:13.49\00:08:15.19 Yes. Yes. A little bit of a pen. 00:08:15.22\00:08:16.89 In fact the Bible does say, 00:08:16.93\00:08:18.26 "Before they call, I will answer." 00:08:18.29\00:08:19.63 Absolutely. 00:08:19.66\00:08:21.00 So, she received an assurance that God had 00:08:21.03\00:08:22.36 and it was a divine providence working towards it. 00:08:22.40\00:08:24.07 Yes. Yes. 00:08:24.10\00:08:25.43 And I believe a big part of this 00:08:25.47\00:08:27.57 is not whether or not 00:08:27.60\00:08:28.94 you will win the legal case, we would like to win, 00:08:28.97\00:08:32.24 it's given that constitution backs it up. 00:08:32.27\00:08:34.24 But this is a wonderful opportunity 00:08:34.28\00:08:35.98 to explain your faith perspective. 00:08:36.01\00:08:38.85 Absolutely. 00:08:38.88\00:08:40.22 From a matter of personal conviction. 00:08:40.25\00:08:42.22 Now before the law, it's not important to prove 00:08:42.25\00:08:45.09 that you're a good Adventist or that your church 00:08:45.12\00:08:48.76 or your priest or whoever is going to vouch for you. 00:08:48.79\00:08:52.63 You can be, you know, just a majority of one. 00:08:52.66\00:08:55.80 If you are personally under conviction 00:08:55.83\00:08:58.00 and so it proves your own personal conviction, 00:08:58.03\00:09:01.00 your own faith. 00:09:01.04\00:09:02.37 And before the Lord, I think 00:09:02.40\00:09:03.74 it's a spiritually growing experience. 00:09:03.77\00:09:05.14 Yeah. 00:09:05.17\00:09:06.51 As I worked with these individuals 00:09:06.54\00:09:07.88 when we tell their stories throughout the air, 00:09:07.91\00:09:09.24 I've heard very consistently 00:09:09.28\00:09:10.68 and I heard with this lady as well. 00:09:10.71\00:09:12.58 She said, you know, there were people 00:09:12.61\00:09:14.68 that she was working with 00:09:14.72\00:09:16.05 and actually one of them was a supervisor 00:09:16.08\00:09:17.69 in a supervisory law 00:09:17.72\00:09:19.25 and who came to Pattie and said to her, 00:09:19.29\00:09:22.46 "Don't let this, don't let them win. 00:09:22.49\00:09:24.93 Stand up for your rights. 00:09:24.96\00:09:26.29 You deserve this. This is something, you know." 00:09:26.33\00:09:28.43 And so people are watching whether you are, it's you know, 00:09:28.46\00:09:31.90 your fellow, your coworkers, whether it's, you know, 00:09:31.93\00:09:34.60 the administrators, whether it's your church members 00:09:34.64\00:09:37.54 or your family, people are observing, 00:09:37.57\00:09:40.14 you know, the way that that you handle this. 00:09:40.18\00:09:42.14 And again it's not about winning a case or, you know, 00:09:42.18\00:09:45.45 God certainly bless in the situation 00:09:45.48\00:09:47.12 and blessed in a way that she didn't even imagine, 00:09:47.15\00:09:49.92 you know, would happen. 00:09:49.95\00:09:51.29 That was a very inspiring story which is why we chose it. 00:09:51.32\00:09:53.72 But it's a privilege and a pleasure to put that out 00:09:53.76\00:09:56.09 before our many supporters 00:09:56.12\00:09:57.73 and some are supporters in waiting 00:09:57.76\00:10:00.63 but this hopefully will convince them 00:10:00.66\00:10:03.47 that there is something very good in this. 00:10:03.50\00:10:05.13 Now, it's a great story. 00:10:05.17\00:10:06.50 I definitely go to our website which is LibertyMagazine.org 00:10:06.53\00:10:09.14 and watch the story. 00:10:09.17\00:10:10.51 It's just like a three to five minute. 00:10:10.54\00:10:11.87 And on our website as I remember 00:10:11.91\00:10:13.24 we also have some of the stories 00:10:13.27\00:10:14.61 from previous years, right? 00:10:14.64\00:10:15.98 Absolutely. Yes. 00:10:16.01\00:10:17.35 They were always interesting. Yeah. 00:10:17.38\00:10:19.01 They are not always a total victory, 00:10:19.05\00:10:22.48 there's usually a lesson to be learned in it. 00:10:22.52\00:10:24.62 And unfortunately many go the full legal route 00:10:24.65\00:10:28.32 don't turn out as favorable. 00:10:28.36\00:10:30.26 And in my view even those ones with this a cash payout 00:10:30.29\00:10:35.56 that's not a total victory 00:10:35.60\00:10:36.93 because the person may have gone 00:10:36.97\00:10:38.30 on to another job, lost that job. 00:10:38.33\00:10:40.00 But the point is really good witness. 00:10:40.04\00:10:41.50 Well, and most of the time they have been out of, 00:10:41.54\00:10:42.87 they have been out of work for a period of time 00:10:42.90\00:10:44.51 not making any money and without any sort of benefits 00:10:44.54\00:10:47.08 whether it's health insurance or things like that. 00:10:47.11\00:10:48.74 So this is not a situation of people's victories. 00:10:48.78\00:10:50.85 So a victory where there is money involved is, 00:10:50.88\00:10:53.05 it's not an unqualified victory. 00:10:53.08\00:10:55.78 The best sort of element to the victory 00:10:55.82\00:10:57.92 is what Pattie was talking about. 00:10:57.95\00:11:00.02 Absolutely. 00:11:00.06\00:11:01.39 She's been encouraged and inspired and other people see 00:11:01.42\00:11:03.73 the Lord working through this. 00:11:03.76\00:11:05.09 Absolutely. 00:11:05.13\00:11:06.46 So what's your prognosis for the campaign this year? 00:11:06.49\00:11:10.63 You think this is gonna be the best year yet? 00:11:10.67\00:11:12.27 I certainly-- 00:11:12.30\00:11:13.64 I know you and some others have teased me 00:11:13.67\00:11:15.20 when I get the latest issue of Liberty Magazine. 00:11:15.24\00:11:17.51 I'll say this is the best magazine yet. 00:11:17.54\00:11:19.51 Yes, the best issue yet. 00:11:19.54\00:11:21.11 I mean, I certainly hope so. 00:11:21.14\00:11:23.55 I know that we tell encouraging inspiring story 00:11:23.58\00:11:28.28 and I know that I think it really illustrates 00:11:28.32\00:11:30.69 sort of the need for participation for individuals, 00:11:30.72\00:11:35.92 you know, to donate and to share 00:11:35.96\00:11:40.70 in sort of this in this ministry that we do 00:11:40.73\00:11:44.17 but I felt like it's just, I don't know, 00:11:44.20\00:11:47.20 we put, we try to do the best work that we can 00:11:47.24\00:11:50.21 and then we put it in God's hands from there. 00:11:50.24\00:11:52.14 And so I certainly hope that it will be 00:11:52.17\00:11:54.14 as far as the campaign. 00:11:56.44\00:11:57.88 But it's, you know, we just leave it up to God 00:11:57.91\00:12:01.12 and how He impresses the hearts of our donors. 00:12:01.15\00:12:05.82 A few weeks ago, I was privileged to sit close by 00:12:05.85\00:12:08.89 actually in an adjoining room 00:12:08.92\00:12:10.99 looking through the wide opening 00:12:11.03\00:12:13.09 between dining and a lounge room 00:12:13.13\00:12:15.40 and watch as a Seventh-day Adventist woman 00:12:15.43\00:12:19.17 spoke committedly and at great lengths 00:12:19.20\00:12:24.21 with television reporters from a national studio 00:12:24.24\00:12:28.14 from a national network. 00:12:28.18\00:12:29.98 She was telling them 00:12:30.01\00:12:31.41 why she should have accommodation 00:12:31.45\00:12:34.02 for her deeply held Sabbath beliefs. 00:12:34.05\00:12:36.45 It was inspiring and it's the sort of thing 00:12:36.48\00:12:38.89 that we always share each year during our campaign. 00:12:38.92\00:12:42.56 We have another similar story that we are making available 00:12:42.59\00:12:45.59 with our campaign materials this year. 00:12:45.63\00:12:47.70 But what it tells me is that 00:12:47.73\00:12:49.73 there is a great reservoir of enthusiasm 00:12:49.76\00:12:53.74 that with Liberty Magazine going out to the legislators, 00:12:53.77\00:12:56.97 whether being read by laypeople 00:12:57.01\00:12:59.11 and being funded by your dollars 00:12:59.14\00:13:02.31 we can make a difference. 00:13:02.34\00:13:04.01 We can not only be on national television networks, 00:13:04.05\00:13:07.32 we can, and what we do and the effect of our work 00:13:07.35\00:13:10.45 can be read every day in newspapers, 00:13:10.49\00:13:13.25 it can be studied in colleges, 00:13:13.29\00:13:15.59 it can make a difference in the community. 00:13:15.62\00:13:18.59 But you need to respond 00:13:18.63\00:13:20.40 and this annual appeal for liberty is make or break. 00:13:20.43\00:13:25.13 We can't do anything without the money 00:13:25.17\00:13:27.47 and you really can't do anything 00:13:27.50\00:13:29.20 without the involvement. 00:13:29.24\00:13:31.41 For Liberty Insider, I'm Lincoln Steed. 00:13:31.44\00:13:35.08
