Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:26.02\00:00:27.76 This is a program bringing you discussion, 00:00:27.79\00:00:29.99 news, up-to-date information 00:00:30.03\00:00:31.46 and analysis of religious liberty events 00:00:31.49\00:00:34.33 mostly in the United States but around the whole world. 00:00:34.36\00:00:37.73 My name is Lincoln Steed, Editor of Liberty Magazine 00:00:37.77\00:00:40.94 and my guest on the program is Melissa Reid, 00:00:40.97\00:00:44.27 Associate Editor of Liberty Magazine. 00:00:44.31\00:00:46.84 So this is sort of an inside talk program. 00:00:46.88\00:00:50.68 And welcome, Melissa. Thank you. 00:00:50.71\00:00:53.42 It's a pleasure to be here. 00:00:53.45\00:00:56.08 Liberty Magazine is rather important for me 00:00:56.12\00:00:58.62 and I hope for you. 00:00:58.65\00:00:59.99 Absolutely. And a New Year is important. 00:01:00.02\00:01:03.56 As we're recording this, we're just beginning 2016 00:01:03.59\00:01:06.59 and for a lot of people the New Year means many things, 00:01:06.63\00:01:10.57 resolutions and so on. 00:01:10.60\00:01:11.97 But for Liberty, what does it mean? 00:01:12.00\00:01:14.44 The beginning of the year. Yeah. 00:01:14.47\00:01:15.80 Well, the beginning of the year 00:01:15.84\00:01:17.17 is always an exciting time for us 00:01:17.21\00:01:19.11 because it's a time where we are able to reach 00:01:19.14\00:01:23.35 church members with the message of religious freedom 00:01:23.38\00:01:26.72 and really sort of start off a campaign season 00:01:26.75\00:01:30.72 that we like to think of 00:01:30.75\00:01:32.09 really involving local churches in our message 00:01:32.12\00:01:35.66 doing some fund raising 00:01:35.69\00:01:37.49 so that we can share our magazine and our message 00:01:37.53\00:01:40.33 with thought leaders across the United States. 00:01:40.36\00:01:41.76 And how does this differ from the public television 00:01:41.80\00:01:44.53 appeals which... 00:01:44.57\00:01:46.60 Well-- 00:01:46.63\00:01:47.97 I love public television but I must admit 00:01:48.00\00:01:49.70 their appeals seem endless. 00:01:49.74\00:01:51.07 Right. 00:01:51.11\00:01:52.44 And I sometime wonder because they are getting funding 00:01:52.47\00:01:53.81 from many sources. 00:01:53.84\00:01:55.18 How does it differ with Liberty Magazine? 00:01:55.21\00:01:56.54 Well, that's probably a biggest one right there. 00:01:56.58\00:01:58.05 The clue of it-- 00:01:58.08\00:01:59.61 Yeah, the funding for many sources 00:01:59.65\00:02:01.55 is not true for Liberty. 00:02:01.58\00:02:03.08 The campaign is really our one shot 00:02:03.12\00:02:06.76 at fundraising for the year and it really determines, 00:02:06.79\00:02:10.33 you know, how effective we can be in the work that we do 00:02:10.36\00:02:13.03 because, you know, however much money means 00:02:13.06\00:02:16.26 however many magazines that we can send out. 00:02:16.30\00:02:19.23 And, you know, this program is connected 00:02:19.27\00:02:22.24 by my continuing presence, 00:02:22.27\00:02:24.31 and mentioned at Liberty Magazine 00:02:24.34\00:02:25.91 to what we're doing with the magazine. 00:02:25.94\00:02:28.51 So it's not just print, there this television, 00:02:28.54\00:02:31.38 there's radio program, there's the internet 00:02:31.41\00:02:34.68 but at the center of it is the magazine 00:02:34.72\00:02:36.62 and we only have the single source of funding. 00:02:36.65\00:02:39.99 The money that comes in during this time period 00:02:40.02\00:02:42.39 when we are promoting it 00:02:42.42\00:02:43.76 and as you mentioned church members 00:02:43.79\00:02:45.13 but this is a TV program that goes out to everybody. 00:02:45.16\00:02:47.56 Sure. 00:02:47.60\00:02:48.93 And I wish that we could spread the good news 00:02:48.96\00:02:52.63 that anybody can help 00:02:52.67\00:02:55.20 what we are doing with Liberty Magazine. 00:02:55.24\00:02:56.91 Right. Well, it's really easy. 00:02:56.94\00:02:59.17 Individuals seem to do is just visit our website 00:02:59.21\00:03:02.31 and they can participate in the campaign as well. 00:03:02.34\00:03:04.65 That's LibertyMagazine.org is where our website is located 00:03:04.68\00:03:09.65 and there is just, you know, a button there that says, 00:03:09.68\00:03:13.19 you know, donate or participate in various ways. 00:03:13.22\00:03:15.76 You can also see... 00:03:15.79\00:03:17.19 I think we will probably get to it a little bit later, 00:03:17.23\00:03:19.26 but you can also see the story that we are highlighting 00:03:19.29\00:03:22.43 in this year's campaign message. 00:03:22.46\00:03:24.97 We send a packet of promotional material 00:03:25.00\00:03:26.90 to all of our local churches and we usually feature 00:03:26.94\00:03:29.44 a particular story of religious discrimination. 00:03:29.47\00:03:33.17 And so you can if you are not attending a local church 00:03:33.21\00:03:37.61 or they have chosen not to participate for some reason, 00:03:37.65\00:03:40.55 then you can see that material 00:03:40.58\00:03:42.85 and hear that story online as well. 00:03:42.88\00:03:44.82 Well, we could send that to any church 00:03:44.85\00:03:48.66 or civic organization or any club 00:03:48.69\00:03:51.49 that wants to promote it. 00:03:51.53\00:03:52.86 Absolutely. Right. 00:03:52.89\00:03:54.23 And its, actually they can just download it from the website. 00:03:54.26\00:03:55.90 Right. 00:03:55.93\00:03:57.53 They're all at one or they have to get each bit separately, 00:03:57.57\00:03:59.93 don't they, from the website? 00:03:59.97\00:04:01.30 We don't have it as a packet. Correct. Not as a packet. Yes. 00:04:01.34\00:04:03.00 So they could do that or if that seems too complicated, 00:04:03.04\00:04:06.78 we would be happy to mail them the pack. 00:04:06.81\00:04:09.18 Yeah. 00:04:09.21\00:04:10.55 But they can get, you can get the address 00:04:10.58\00:04:11.98 from Liberty Magazine. 00:04:12.01\00:04:13.98 Liberty Magazine. 00:04:14.02\00:04:15.35 For a second I thought, we put magazine, 00:04:15.38\00:04:16.72 LibertyMagazine.org. 00:04:16.75\00:04:18.19 Right. Yes. 00:04:18.22\00:04:19.55 Just under the campaign resources tab 00:04:19.59\00:04:21.49 or the contact us and just give us a call 00:04:21.52\00:04:23.66 and we will walk you through the whole process. 00:04:23.69\00:04:25.19 Now we do this a lot but I would like you to outline 00:04:25.23\00:04:29.60 who do we send Liberty Magazine to? 00:04:29.63\00:04:31.60 Right. Well, I use the term-- 00:04:31.63\00:04:32.97 Who are the targets? Yeah. 00:04:33.00\00:04:34.34 I use the term thought leaders 00:04:34.37\00:04:35.70 and that's one that we usually use. 00:04:35.74\00:04:37.07 But what we mean by that is individuals 00:04:37.11\00:04:38.94 that are making decisions about our personal freedoms, 00:04:38.97\00:04:42.24 about our liberties on the federal government 00:04:42.28\00:04:45.15 and the state government, even in your local community. 00:04:45.18\00:04:47.72 A lot of times, you know, we always have people asking, 00:04:47.75\00:04:50.85 "Oh, you know, you're sending one to the president, 00:04:50.89\00:04:52.62 are you sending one to this member of Congress?" 00:04:52.65\00:04:54.36 Which we are, we have a list that we refer to as, 00:04:54.39\00:04:58.23 you know, our priority list and we keep that updated 00:04:58.26\00:05:01.40 so that as individuals go through, 00:05:01.43\00:05:04.00 you know, office positions or serve different terms 00:05:04.03\00:05:07.27 that, you know, we keep those positions active 00:05:07.30\00:05:09.37 and the subscriptions current. 00:05:09.40\00:05:11.41 But a lot of times, 00:05:11.44\00:05:12.77 when we look to our church members 00:05:12.81\00:05:14.54 and our local readers to really let us know 00:05:14.58\00:05:17.81 who in the community is sort of the decision makers, 00:05:17.85\00:05:21.15 who are the influential people? 00:05:21.18\00:05:22.82 You know, is it their city council member, 00:05:22.85\00:05:25.89 is it their, you know, somebody that sits on the school board 00:05:25.92\00:05:29.92 or things like that. 00:05:29.96\00:05:31.29 You all are able to identify those individuals much better 00:05:31.33\00:05:35.46 than we are and a lot of times, they are making decisions 00:05:35.50\00:05:37.87 that affect us more than, 00:05:37.90\00:05:40.34 you know, what's happening in Washington DC. 00:05:40.37\00:05:42.00 Absolutely, the local government, 00:05:42.04\00:05:43.74 for all, you know, the presidential election 00:05:43.77\00:05:46.31 is rising up in front of the whole nation 00:05:46.34\00:05:48.04 and that's important but day-to-day 00:05:48.08\00:05:50.31 its really local government that makes 00:05:50.35\00:05:51.71 more of a difference in someone's day-to-day life. 00:05:51.75\00:05:54.15 Absolutely. Absolutely. And those-- 00:05:54.18\00:05:55.75 We want those people to know these principles. 00:05:55.78\00:05:57.12 Absolutely. 00:05:57.15\00:05:58.49 And what I actually encourage a lot of people to do 00:05:58.52\00:06:00.32 is to sort of, you know, you can give us a call 00:06:00.36\00:06:03.32 and we can send you some magazines 00:06:03.36\00:06:04.86 and if you are sponsoring a subscription 00:06:04.89\00:06:06.70 for like your local, you know, city council member 00:06:06.73\00:06:10.13 or something like that, 00:06:10.17\00:06:11.50 actually take an issue into their office 00:06:11.53\00:06:14.34 and explain to them, we sponsored... 00:06:14.37\00:06:16.24 Our local church, the local Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:06:16.27\00:06:18.31 has sponsored this subscription for you 00:06:18.34\00:06:20.31 and so you are gonna be getting that for this next year. 00:06:20.34\00:06:22.28 Because lot of times the subscriptions 00:06:22.31\00:06:23.91 will just start and they are not sure, 00:06:23.95\00:06:25.71 of course, they are getting the information 00:06:25.75\00:06:27.15 but they are a bit curious about, 00:06:27.18\00:06:28.65 you know, how that came about 00:06:28.68\00:06:30.02 and so it's a way to really start a relationship. 00:06:30.05\00:06:32.15 Right. 00:06:32.19\00:06:33.52 Most people don't understand how relatively easy it is 00:06:33.56\00:06:35.79 to connect with their local or state 00:06:35.82\00:06:39.46 or even federal officials. 00:06:39.49\00:06:40.83 Absolutely. Even in Washington. 00:06:40.86\00:06:42.90 Once you get past the metal detectors 00:06:42.93\00:06:45.03 and all that stuff and though you can wander 00:06:45.07\00:06:46.90 the hallways of power 00:06:46.94\00:06:48.70 and go into a Congressman or Senator's office 00:06:48.74\00:06:51.67 and talk to their, to their assistants 00:06:51.71\00:06:54.61 and perhaps the Congressman 00:06:54.64\00:06:57.25 might even be in the foyer. 00:06:57.28\00:06:58.61 I see that happens a lot they are in the hallway. 00:06:58.65\00:07:00.72 Yeah. More times than you would expect. 00:07:00.75\00:07:02.42 You can stop them and say appreciate what you're doing, 00:07:02.45\00:07:04.12 give them the Liberty Magazine. 00:07:04.15\00:07:05.55 Sure. 00:07:05.59\00:07:07.16 It's another tool to make that contact as you are saying. 00:07:07.19\00:07:09.82 Right. Right. Absolutely. 00:07:09.86\00:07:11.79 And, you know, I know that you hear these stories 00:07:11.83\00:07:14.20 just like I do because a lot of times 00:07:14.23\00:07:16.03 people at the church level will sponsor a subscription. 00:07:16.06\00:07:19.20 Again, you can do that online if you are not attending 00:07:19.23\00:07:21.50 a local Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:07:21.54\00:07:23.14 Just go to the website and say that you want to do 00:07:23.17\00:07:26.17 a gift subscription, but the... 00:07:26.21\00:07:31.85 A lot of times people are, you know, sort of wondering 00:07:31.88\00:07:33.75 well, do you ever hear back from the individuals 00:07:33.78\00:07:36.65 that we're sponsoring the subscriptions for? 00:07:36.69\00:07:38.25 Oh, yeah. I've gotten wonderful letters. 00:07:38.29\00:07:40.12 Wonderful letters. 00:07:40.16\00:07:41.49 Very appreciative, people are very appreciative. 00:07:41.52\00:07:43.06 They are always curious. 00:07:43.09\00:07:44.43 And then, you know, how they got on this list, 00:07:44.46\00:07:46.80 but then very appreciative... 00:07:46.83\00:07:48.16 We had lots of situations where individuals are retiring 00:07:48.20\00:07:51.90 from their position. 00:07:51.93\00:07:53.40 I think about the judges, we've had that happen 00:07:53.44\00:07:55.60 several times where they are saying, 00:07:55.64\00:07:56.97 "Can I get this at home now? 00:07:57.01\00:07:58.34 You know, I've been getting it for decades 00:07:58.37\00:07:59.97 while I'm sitting there and serving this in the position." 00:08:00.01\00:08:01.98 Every few months I get a letter like that. 00:08:02.01\00:08:03.68 Yeah. 00:08:03.71\00:08:05.05 And I think you've even had situations 00:08:05.08\00:08:07.58 or people have talked about specific issues 00:08:07.62\00:08:09.65 they have been dealing with in their work 00:08:09.68\00:08:11.72 and Liberty has sort of been a real guide force for them. 00:08:11.75\00:08:14.99 You know, I was told by one of the legislators 00:08:15.02\00:08:17.36 in New England which... 00:08:17.39\00:08:21.60 Trying to remember the state, but anyhow, 00:08:21.63\00:08:23.77 it's a New England state and they said... 00:08:23.80\00:08:26.33 And I don't want to give too many particulars 00:08:26.37\00:08:27.94 because it's very complicated. 00:08:27.97\00:08:29.30 But they said that it was because of reading Liberty 00:08:29.34\00:08:31.94 that they took this position on it 00:08:31.97\00:08:33.98 and they said it was Liberty Magazine 00:08:34.01\00:08:35.78 that was really the guiding light. 00:08:35.81\00:08:38.21 Yeah. Yeah. 00:08:38.25\00:08:39.58 But even if they don't follow liberty, 00:08:39.61\00:08:41.05 that's their choice to make. 00:08:41.08\00:08:42.42 We want them to be informed on the principles 00:08:42.45\00:08:45.49 that historically and biblically 00:08:45.52\00:08:48.56 underscore religious freedom 00:08:48.59\00:08:50.56 and then they can go from there. 00:08:50.59\00:08:52.76 We can't force or direct anyone. 00:08:52.79\00:08:55.30 Liberty is not, you know, one track thing, 00:08:55.33\00:08:57.30 its information reform. 00:08:57.33\00:08:58.73 It's a resource.
