Welcome back to the "Liberty Insider." 00:00:05.97\00:00:07.70 Before the break with guest Paul Anderson, 00:00:07.74\00:00:10.57 you made a really heavy statement about 00:00:10.61\00:00:13.71 where we are headed and the importance 00:00:13.74\00:00:15.08 of religious freedom. 00:00:15.11\00:00:16.58 And so let's continue this discussion. 00:00:16.61\00:00:20.62 When I first started with religious liberty 00:00:20.65\00:00:22.35 I used to quote what are my 00:00:22.38\00:00:23.85 then favorite pieces of writing, 00:00:23.89\00:00:27.66 "Tale of Two Cities," you know, 00:00:27.69\00:00:29.02 because it's the best of times and the worst of times. 00:00:29.06\00:00:31.63 And I still think with it, you know, 00:00:31.66\00:00:33.66 we are well along on the war on terror that scares 00:00:33.70\00:00:37.27 most of us silly from time to time 00:00:37.30\00:00:39.50 but yet at the same time 00:00:39.53\00:00:41.44 things have never been better on many levels. 00:00:41.47\00:00:44.24 So, you know, don't you agree? 00:00:44.27\00:00:45.84 I think it's irresponsible to say we've lost everything. 00:00:45.87\00:00:48.24 Yeah. I think-- 00:00:48.28\00:00:49.61 Nobody is knocking on my door yet, 00:00:49.64\00:00:51.38 nobody has told me I can't practice my faith 00:00:51.41\00:00:54.62 or indeed they restrict me a little bit of civil liberties 00:00:54.65\00:00:58.39 but not greatly. 00:00:58.42\00:01:01.09 But yet I can see evidence 00:01:01.12\00:01:02.82 that the understandings have changed in radical ways, 00:01:02.86\00:01:06.19 even some laws certainly relating 00:01:06.23\00:01:08.30 to how this war on terror has been fought. 00:01:08.33\00:01:10.50 I can see that it's a big net 00:01:10.53\00:01:14.04 that could catch many beyond the real targets. 00:01:14.07\00:01:19.14 I think that technology has made our lives wonderful 00:01:19.17\00:01:25.38 but I learned that in our cars 00:01:25.41\00:01:29.08 the car manufacturers have the capacity 00:01:29.12\00:01:32.15 and certainly the insurance agencies to monitor everything 00:01:32.19\00:01:36.69 we are doing in our cars. 00:01:36.73\00:01:39.19 The speed you drive, when you braked, all of those things 00:01:39.23\00:01:42.80 can be monitored especially with the new cars. 00:01:42.83\00:01:44.90 I like the Tesla, don't have one yet, but that car 00:01:44.93\00:01:48.57 is eternally connected to the Tesla manufacturer. 00:01:48.60\00:01:50.97 Are church salaries 00:01:51.01\00:01:52.34 ever gonna rise to want you to get a Tesla? 00:01:52.37\00:01:53.71 No, I don't think so 00:01:53.74\00:01:55.08 but if there's a benevolent benefactor 00:01:55.11\00:01:58.08 who wants to donate one, I'd take it. 00:01:58.11\00:02:00.32 But also when you go to the stores 00:02:00.35\00:02:03.45 and you use your loyalty card, 00:02:03.49\00:02:05.95 that creates a record of everything you bought. 00:02:05.99\00:02:07.62 Oh, absolutely. 00:02:07.66\00:02:08.99 So there could be 00:02:09.02\00:02:10.36 and I don't want to sound like chicken little 00:02:10.39\00:02:11.93 but there could be mechanisms around 00:02:11.96\00:02:14.36 to tell whether or not by diet or by your budget 00:02:14.40\00:02:18.27 you are compliant with your doctor's 00:02:18.30\00:02:21.97 recommendations and prescriptions. 00:02:22.00\00:02:23.47 Oh, it's all implicit in the information. 00:02:23.51\00:02:25.37 Which is not any sinister intent 00:02:25.41\00:02:27.51 as you said, but the technology 00:02:27.54\00:02:30.05 has pretty much mapped out our lives 00:02:30.08\00:02:32.41 and everything can be recorded, 00:02:32.45\00:02:35.28 analyzed and perhaps, 00:02:35.32\00:02:38.75 perhaps accurately given out what we are doing. 00:02:38.79\00:02:41.79 A Seventh-day Adventist 00:02:41.82\00:02:43.16 that works in a government computer center in Washington 00:02:43.19\00:02:45.49 came to my office once and he said 00:02:45.53\00:02:47.03 pretty much the same. 00:02:47.06\00:02:48.40 He says, "You have no idea what's going on." 00:02:48.43\00:02:49.76 He says, since all this is being gathered he says, 00:02:49.80\00:02:53.03 they can tell a Seventh-day Adventist 00:02:53.07\00:02:54.94 and I thought about it. 00:02:54.97\00:02:56.30 You know, your travel, 00:02:56.34\00:02:57.67 your buying habits, your telephone habits. 00:02:57.71\00:02:59.64 He says, there will be huge hole 00:02:59.67\00:03:01.24 around the Sabbath when everything is grided. 00:03:01.28\00:03:05.01 Interesting. 00:03:05.05\00:03:06.38 Because obviously we are not on our phones in church 00:03:06.41\00:03:08.72 unless we're texting and tweeting 00:03:08.75\00:03:10.45 about the sermon, right? 00:03:10.49\00:03:11.82 Yeah, but and that in itself is not wrong 00:03:11.85\00:03:14.22 but if someone was wanting to isolate you, 00:03:14.26\00:03:17.66 very easy to do. 00:03:17.69\00:03:19.19 So we tend to think, well, 00:03:19.23\00:03:20.56 they would look at the church books, he is a member. 00:03:20.60\00:03:22.06 But now that isn't really the way. 00:03:22.10\00:03:23.43 Yeah. 00:03:23.47\00:03:24.80 And by you signing the contracts for the cell phones 00:03:24.83\00:03:27.97 or whatever media that we are using, 00:03:28.00\00:03:30.57 our internet provider, 00:03:30.61\00:03:34.14 we give right to that information to be collected. 00:03:34.18\00:03:37.81 And what I found troubling 00:03:37.85\00:03:39.21 and I keep telling my kids to be careful, 00:03:39.25\00:03:41.28 Facebook is bad enough but you don't know 00:03:41.32\00:03:44.62 what other people are posting your picture 00:03:44.65\00:03:47.02 and things about you on Facebook 00:03:47.06\00:03:48.82 and then again that's all gathered. 00:03:48.86\00:03:50.19 It isn't just what you would put there. 00:03:50.23\00:03:52.29 Everything can be interconnected. 00:03:52.33\00:03:53.93 Yeah. Yeah. 00:03:53.96\00:03:55.30 And even if that were accurate, that's fine, 00:03:55.33\00:03:57.30 but inferences can be drawn 00:03:57.33\00:03:58.67 that might not be just because 00:03:58.70\00:04:02.10 I know somebody doesn't mean 00:04:02.14\00:04:04.21 that I'm party to what they do. 00:04:04.24\00:04:06.21 That's true. 00:04:06.24\00:04:07.58 And I guess what it does boil down to 00:04:07.61\00:04:09.74 is the responsibility of the believer 00:04:09.78\00:04:13.38 to practice integrity at all times. 00:04:13.42\00:04:15.62 Yeah, I mean, just I made a illusion to Daniel over here 00:04:15.65\00:04:19.99 but I think it's a lesson we should take. 00:04:20.02\00:04:22.66 We live before God regardless of what is thought about it. 00:04:22.69\00:04:26.86 Pray at that window even if, you know, 00:04:26.90\00:04:30.10 it's being recorded on account of our machine. 00:04:30.13\00:04:33.97 Do you remember that term? 00:04:34.00\00:04:35.34 Yes. Yes. 00:04:35.37\00:04:36.71 It was a bad PR name 00:04:36.74\00:04:38.07 and so they've changed it to something else. 00:04:38.11\00:04:39.44 And, you know, I'm as spooked 00:04:39.47\00:04:41.14 as anyone by what's happening 00:04:41.18\00:04:42.58 but I generally don't think it's a bad intent, 00:04:42.61\00:04:46.72 but I think it's heading toward a bad conclusion for all of us. 00:04:46.75\00:04:50.55 Not just Adventists, not just Christians, 00:04:50.59\00:04:52.52 not just people of faith. 00:04:52.55\00:04:54.39 I think such a net is being drawn 00:04:54.42\00:04:56.86 that the framers of the Constitution's idea of privacy 00:04:56.89\00:05:00.63 and the autonomy and rights of the individual, 00:05:00.66\00:05:03.50 it just automatically dissipates. 00:05:03.53\00:05:06.20 Technology tends to change the contemporary dynamics 00:05:06.23\00:05:10.27 on the principles that we've held dear, 00:05:10.31\00:05:13.68 privacy and autonomy, 00:05:13.71\00:05:15.04 those things are kind of sacrificed 00:05:15.08\00:05:17.15 when you're on shared networks. 00:05:17.18\00:05:18.65 Yeah. 00:05:18.68\00:05:20.72 You know, I'm a bit of a lud. 00:05:20.75\00:05:22.62 You know, I think it's best to personally stay away 00:05:22.65\00:05:25.15 but the new generation, they don't have that thought. 00:05:25.19\00:05:27.99 So the best to say to them is "Live your life consistently." 00:05:28.02\00:05:32.19 You know, there is a problem with younger people. 00:05:32.23\00:05:34.16 Well, all younger people had it 00:05:34.20\00:05:35.53 but it's worse I think currently. 00:05:35.56\00:05:37.53 You know, they will act a certain way in church 00:05:37.57\00:05:40.14 but they can party with the hearty of the terms 00:05:40.17\00:05:42.54 and they might somehow in their mind 00:05:42.57\00:05:44.84 they reconcile it 00:05:44.87\00:05:46.21 but it's not reconcilable by surveillance. 00:05:46.24\00:05:48.71 Yeah. 00:05:48.74\00:05:50.08 It would undercut you horribly. 00:05:50.11\00:05:51.91 You know, it's going to challenge us as a church 00:05:51.95\00:05:55.52 on how to communicate and maintain relationships 00:05:55.55\00:05:59.82 with our younger children. 00:05:59.85\00:06:01.72 I have grandchildren, the eldest is three and they, 00:06:01.76\00:06:05.13 neither of them can read but they can navigate YouTube. 00:06:05.16\00:06:08.40 Yeah. Yeah. 00:06:08.43\00:06:12.13 I know Apple computer and this is not an ad for them 00:06:12.17\00:06:14.50 but I am a pro Apple person. 00:06:14.54\00:06:16.60 You know, they developed 00:06:16.64\00:06:17.97 what they said was an intuitive interface 00:06:18.01\00:06:20.64 whether it truly is we don't know 00:06:20.68\00:06:22.34 but I've got to admit 00:06:22.38\00:06:23.95 looking at some of these kids I wonder, 00:06:23.98\00:06:25.65 are they almost built in with the aptitude for it 00:06:25.68\00:06:29.75 or is it just a well designed intuitive interface. 00:06:29.78\00:06:32.09 But these kids are, they seem to know it 00:06:32.12\00:06:35.62 before they can talk or walk. 00:06:35.66\00:06:37.09 They absorb technology. 00:06:37.13\00:06:39.26 Little children are able to manage multiple systems 00:06:39.29\00:06:43.43 in order to look at a DVD. 00:06:43.47\00:06:45.23 They can figure out 00:06:45.27\00:06:46.60 how to turn this thing, this thing, 00:06:46.63\00:06:48.24 that thing on and get to watch 00:06:48.27\00:06:50.51 the DVD they are interested in. 00:06:50.54\00:06:51.87 But maybe all of these mechanisms are like 00:06:51.91\00:06:54.31 the fruit on a forbidden tree that we are eating 00:06:54.34\00:06:59.45 that dulls their sense of what is right or wrong 00:06:59.48\00:07:01.68 or in religious liberty, 00:07:01.72\00:07:03.59 dulls our sense of what duty holds for us. 00:07:03.62\00:07:06.29 But I think technology is amoral 00:07:06.32\00:07:10.99 but how we utilize it 00:07:11.03\00:07:13.03 is dependent upon our sense of values. 00:07:13.06\00:07:15.96 Absolutely. Some is not. 00:07:16.00\00:07:18.30 Yeah, that's true. 00:07:18.33\00:07:19.67 I'm not anti TV but I got to admit 00:07:19.70\00:07:21.57 and we could have a whole program on it 00:07:21.60\00:07:23.47 that some of the carry away 00:07:23.51\00:07:24.84 and things that are going on are positively harmful 00:07:24.87\00:07:27.78 and mesmerizing, the whole mechanism. 00:07:27.81\00:07:30.48 Like, I can remember few years ago 00:07:30.51\00:07:32.55 there was a spate in Japan of TV programs 00:07:32.58\00:07:35.68 that had strobing lights 00:07:35.72\00:07:37.89 and thousands of kids went into seizures. 00:07:37.92\00:07:39.75 So it's not just how your mind processes it, 00:07:39.79\00:07:44.06 it just affects the human mechanism 00:07:44.09\00:07:46.06 in a subliminal way. 00:07:46.09\00:07:47.43 Right. 00:07:47.46\00:07:48.80 But there's no question, isn't it, 00:07:48.83\00:07:50.17 that religious liberty is a threat or at least 00:07:50.20\00:07:54.24 endangered by these sort of dynamics 00:07:54.27\00:07:56.44 and we need to be on our guard. 00:07:56.47\00:07:57.81 Absolutely. 00:07:57.84\00:07:59.17 On our guard and able to process and provide 00:07:59.21\00:08:04.05 what we need without giving too much of our liberty away 00:08:04.08\00:08:08.95 to facilitate other things. 00:08:08.98\00:08:11.12 And if we are living in harmony 00:08:11.15\00:08:13.32 with what's right, best and proper 00:08:13.36\00:08:16.46 we will be okay. 00:08:16.49\00:08:18.23 If you ever want to spend a sleepless night 00:08:18.26\00:08:21.53 then just spend an hour or two cruising the internet, 00:08:21.56\00:08:24.70 YouTube included, and look at some of the postings 00:08:24.73\00:08:28.94 having to do with martial law, internment camps, 00:08:28.97\00:08:32.94 even guillotines and the whole thing 00:08:32.97\00:08:35.01 and of course don't forget to end up with space aliens 00:08:35.04\00:08:38.35 and all sorts of nether creations perhaps like 00:08:38.38\00:08:41.82 Atlanteans live under the crust 00:08:41.85\00:08:44.72 or the surface of the ocean. 00:08:44.75\00:08:46.55 All of these things are floating around 00:08:46.59\00:08:48.59 and you will be sleepless for a long time. 00:08:48.62\00:08:50.63 But I want to tell you all of that aside 00:08:50.66\00:08:53.56 which may contain small kernels of truth. 00:08:53.60\00:08:56.23 All of that aside, religious freedom, 00:08:56.26\00:08:58.77 civil liberty is indeed under threat. 00:08:58.80\00:09:01.30 A lot of it is being sacrificed 00:09:01.34\00:09:03.57 in the battle against terrorism which is a very real war. 00:09:03.61\00:09:08.08 All of it is being sacrificed in the culture war 00:09:08.11\00:09:10.85 that has put up hedonism and self-fulfillment 00:09:10.88\00:09:14.25 ahead of religious commitment and morality 00:09:14.28\00:09:17.09 or moral godly living. 00:09:17.12\00:09:19.82 The threat is real and we should not be misled 00:09:19.85\00:09:23.46 by the sitzkrieg if you like in this war 00:09:23.49\00:09:26.49 where things appear unchanged 00:09:26.53\00:09:28.60 but beneath the surface real changes, 00:09:28.63\00:09:31.40 real threats are rapidly emerging 00:09:31.43\00:09:34.14 and will soon reveal themselves full blown. 00:09:34.17\00:09:37.64 This is Lincoln Steed for Liberty Insider. 00:09:37.67\00:09:40.18
