Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:05.77\00:00:08.30 Before the break with Doctor-- 00:00:08.34\00:00:10.67 I nearly said John Graz, you're a predecessor. 00:00:10.71\00:00:13.01 I'm so used to him. 00:00:13.04\00:00:14.38 But this is Ganoune Diop, my good friend 00:00:14.41\00:00:16.18 and director of Public Affairs and Religious Liberty 00:00:16.21\00:00:19.31 for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:00:19.35\00:00:20.68 And before the break we'd been talking about 00:00:20.72\00:00:22.32 the Adventist imperative 00:00:22.35\00:00:24.02 and charter for religious liberty 00:00:24.05\00:00:26.19 which is integrally tied with our history. 00:00:26.22\00:00:30.03 We're a product of the mid 1800s in the United States 00:00:30.06\00:00:33.66 of the Millerite Movement, and then self consciously 00:00:33.70\00:00:37.07 the inheritors of the reformation. 00:00:37.10\00:00:39.33 You mean, 1900, right you mean? 00:00:39.37\00:00:40.97 Eighteen-- No, the 1818, mid 1800s 00:00:41.00\00:00:45.27 is when the Seventh-day Adventist Church began. 00:00:45.31\00:00:47.98 And we inherit the reformation charter, if you like. 00:00:50.81\00:00:56.15 Well, I've got to tell you, 00:00:56.18\00:00:57.52 and I want to just brain storm a little bit on this. 00:00:57.55\00:01:01.06 I thought a lot more of the reformation of light 00:01:01.09\00:01:03.53 because not too many weeks and ago now, 00:01:03.56\00:01:08.33 the all of Washington was, all the twitter, 00:01:08.36\00:01:12.37 about a state visit from Pope Francis 00:01:12.40\00:01:16.91 from the Roman Catholic Church, coming on-- 00:01:16.94\00:01:20.58 I think an Alitalia airline into Andrews Air Force Base 00:01:20.61\00:01:23.78 and the adulation is just overwhelming 00:01:23.81\00:01:27.85 and that's wonderful, on a PR sense. 00:01:27.88\00:01:31.22 I'm happy for he and his organization 00:01:31.25\00:01:34.56 and the legislators are so happy 00:01:34.59\00:01:37.93 to have a foreign leader speak. 00:01:37.96\00:01:39.29 The last it happened 00:01:39.33\00:01:40.66 remember, with Prime Minister Netanyahu, 00:01:40.70\00:01:43.00 there was a quite a bitter taste... 00:01:43.03\00:01:44.83 Correct. 00:01:44.87\00:01:47.07 But looking at this form the point of prophecy 00:01:47.10\00:01:50.24 as an Adventist and as an inheritor of the reformation 00:01:50.27\00:01:56.08 I'm struck at how things have changed 00:01:56.11\00:01:58.35 because the United States once defined itself 00:01:58.38\00:02:01.55 as Protestant society, never a Protestant government. 00:02:01.58\00:02:06.22 It had cautions against 00:02:06.25\00:02:08.52 the old mother Church to give its own term. 00:02:11.79\00:02:16.16 And so what has changed? 00:02:16.20\00:02:17.90 That's what I'd like to discuss. 00:02:17.93\00:02:19.77 What's going on here? 00:02:19.80\00:02:21.14 because there's something remarkable 00:02:21.17\00:02:23.47 from a point of history 00:02:23.51\00:02:24.87 and of course, religious history. 00:02:24.91\00:02:26.47 Yeah, well, what has happened, 00:02:26.51\00:02:29.51 probably one of the biggest change 00:02:29.54\00:02:31.31 as far as America is concerned for us from that prospective 00:02:31.35\00:02:34.85 and then I will share other things, 00:02:34.88\00:02:38.22 is that the time, when Roman Catholics 00:02:38.25\00:02:42.02 or Catholics who were prosecuted in this country-- 00:02:42.06\00:02:44.96 Yes, and I'm glad you brought that up. 00:02:44.99\00:02:46.33 This is been a great prejudice in the past. 00:02:46.36\00:02:50.03 People forgot that part but I think 00:02:50.07\00:02:54.20 it was the election of Kennedy that started turning you know, 00:02:54.24\00:02:57.64 turning the tide and so far and so on. 00:02:57.67\00:02:59.71 But the Catholic had historically 00:02:59.74\00:03:01.94 a very hard time in America, 00:03:01.98\00:03:04.18 not being able to hold office in, 00:03:04.21\00:03:06.01 you know, etcetera, etcetera. 00:03:06.05\00:03:07.38 So that has completely changed. 00:03:07.42\00:03:08.78 Well, they were-- 00:03:08.82\00:03:10.15 Well, I need to stick up for the United States. 00:03:10.19\00:03:13.56 The constitution has that clause 00:03:13.59\00:03:15.76 that says, no religious test for public office. 00:03:15.79\00:03:17.96 So there was no legal prohibition 00:03:17.99\00:03:20.30 but there was a social frown 00:03:20.33\00:03:23.26 that the meant to was very difficult in way back, 00:03:23.30\00:03:25.90 not lately, in fact-- 00:03:25.93\00:03:27.27 No, no, no but this is what I said earlier, 00:03:27.30\00:03:28.70 remember, I made a distinction between 00:03:28.74\00:03:31.14 constitutional provisions and popular hostility 00:03:31.17\00:03:35.74 and there was-- I was stating the fact that-- 00:03:35.78\00:03:37.11 And even and I've stated on this program before 00:03:37.15\00:03:39.08 most people have forgotten the Ku Klux Klan, 00:03:39.11\00:03:41.35 the infamous and even to this day 00:03:41.38\00:03:44.72 from what it did before the civil rights moment, 00:03:44.75\00:03:48.02 of course, it was very racist 00:03:48.06\00:03:49.39 but its equal plank of its activities 00:03:49.42\00:03:51.63 was Anti-Catholicism. 00:03:51.66\00:03:53.06 It was wide Protestant America there. 00:03:53.09\00:03:55.86 So that's regrettable, not defensible 00:03:55.90\00:03:58.10 and that's changed, that's good. 00:03:58.13\00:03:59.80 And the only reason why I mention that is that I'm glad 00:03:59.83\00:04:03.24 the Catholics have benefited from religious liberty. 00:04:03.27\00:04:06.54 Yes, absolutely. Good, I like that. 00:04:06.57\00:04:08.54 Because that's, that's, you know, 00:04:08.58\00:04:10.91 so the Catholic in this country 00:04:10.95\00:04:13.01 and the arrival of their leaders 00:04:13.05\00:04:16.79 shows clearly that there is a complete, you know, 00:04:16.82\00:04:19.72 reversal of those obscured times, you know, 00:04:19.75\00:04:23.09 when their religious freedom wouldn't have expect that. 00:04:23.12\00:04:25.76 Well, let me ask you the big question 00:04:25.79\00:04:27.46 and I suspect something along these lines. 00:04:27.50\00:04:31.73 Is it because we've re-thought those problems 00:04:31.77\00:04:35.67 which shouldn't been 00:04:35.70\00:04:37.04 and had a change of heart in the United States? 00:04:37.07\00:04:39.81 Or is-- it also because and to what degree 00:04:39.84\00:04:43.85 the understandings that formed the Protestants sensibility 00:04:45.05\00:04:48.72 have sort of drifted away? 00:04:48.75\00:04:51.42 Well, you know, I would not venture 00:04:51.45\00:04:53.39 to judge Protestantism personally, 00:04:53.42\00:04:55.56 all I'm saying though that is, which is clear. 00:04:55.59\00:04:58.03 Well, we need to. We are the public commentators. 00:04:58.06\00:04:59.86 Remember Senator Santorum, a Roman Catholic Senator, 00:04:59.89\00:05:04.93 who then ran for U.S. President. 00:05:04.97\00:05:06.80 He ventured to make a public statement. 00:05:06.84\00:05:08.47 He said, "Protestantism is absent in America today." 00:05:08.50\00:05:11.07 Well, I didn't know, I think it's more complex than that-- 00:05:11.11\00:05:14.68 Well, of course it is very complex 00:05:14.71\00:05:16.04 and we need to discuss it. 00:05:16.08\00:05:17.65 Yes, so precisely this is where I think 00:05:17.68\00:05:20.52 we have to be very specific and discipline about, 00:05:20.55\00:05:23.25 you know, the kind of-- 00:05:23.28\00:05:25.25 Something is changed. 00:05:25.29\00:05:26.62 Yes, exactly, so but what and why? 00:05:26.65\00:05:29.22 So I would venture though, to say, 00:05:29.26\00:05:31.53 probably both in a sense that it's clear 00:05:31.56\00:05:35.50 that on the one hand, America has changed, 00:05:35.53\00:05:38.30 I mean, I'm talking about the popular hostility. 00:05:38.33\00:05:40.70 Some for the good. 00:05:40.74\00:05:42.07 Absolutely, this was for the good 00:05:42.10\00:05:44.31 to allow Roman Catholics to be able to be accepted 00:05:44.34\00:05:48.04 as an integral part of American society, 00:05:48.08\00:05:51.85 I mean, that is very good. 00:05:51.88\00:05:53.58 On the other side, you have the Roman Catholic Church 00:05:53.62\00:05:56.58 also has changed many, I mean, before even. 00:05:56.62\00:06:02.32 But then-- now, you have to-- 00:06:02.36\00:06:04.16 we have to be fair to the Roman Catholic 00:06:04.19\00:06:06.13 as I was trying to do for Muslims, you know, 00:06:06.16\00:06:09.26 not to put everything into. 00:06:09.30\00:06:11.27 Catholics, the Catholic Church through out these two million 00:06:11.30\00:06:14.60 and so forth of their claim 00:06:14.64\00:06:16.40 have had many reformers before Martin Luther. 00:06:16.44\00:06:20.34 You know, who tried to-- Although, I've noticed. 00:06:20.38\00:06:22.11 I've-- just on Friday, I was at a Catholic All Day Seminar 00:06:22.14\00:06:26.41 and I've noticed again for the latest time 00:06:26.45\00:06:28.38 they are owning the reformers now. 00:06:28.42\00:06:30.35 Well-- 00:06:30.39\00:06:31.72 And it is true they came from the Roman Catholic Church, 00:06:31.75\00:06:33.59 but they don't see them as other, 00:06:33.62\00:06:35.79 their outer form is in-- and they're accepting, 00:06:35.82\00:06:38.56 we've moved in the direction that they pushed. 00:06:38.59\00:06:40.53 And I think that is part of the Catholic ethos to be-- 00:06:40.56\00:06:44.77 to be encompassing. 00:06:44.80\00:06:47.60 I mean, Catholic means universal, 00:06:47.64\00:06:49.20 so they and-- and it's true historically 00:06:49.24\00:06:52.17 that Martin Luther did not set out 00:06:52.21\00:06:55.64 to leave the Catholic Church, right so, okay. 00:06:55.68\00:06:58.28 But I think it is important to notice, 00:06:58.31\00:07:02.75 yes, you have inside Catholics tradition attempts 00:07:02.78\00:07:07.56 at reforming the Church there were several, right? 00:07:07.59\00:07:10.19 And before Martin Luther and then after. 00:07:10.23\00:07:13.60 And you even have a counter reformation 00:07:13.63\00:07:16.33 because the Catholic wanted also to review 00:07:16.36\00:07:19.60 and since Pope Francis-- 00:07:19.63\00:07:20.97 And it's worth mentioning, the counter reformation 00:07:21.00\00:07:22.90 gave rise to the Jesuits and may have the Jesuit Popes. 00:07:22.94\00:07:26.68 And it's not immaterial. 00:07:26.71\00:07:28.04 No, no, yeah, but when Pope Francis came 00:07:28.08\00:07:30.85 and you know, now, everybody is talking about 00:07:30.88\00:07:33.35 his attempt to reform the Catholic Church. 00:07:33.38\00:07:35.25 Again, he is seen as a new reformer 00:07:35.28\00:07:38.05 who is about themselves. 00:07:38.09\00:07:39.42 Now, but-- 00:07:39.45\00:07:40.99 Which is very refreshing, 00:07:41.02\00:07:42.36 as an observer looking at their organization. 00:07:42.39\00:07:44.63 Absolutely, now something has to be said 00:07:44.66\00:07:47.70 about the Catholic engagement 00:07:47.73\00:07:50.37 and Catholics have done a lot of good. 00:07:50.40\00:07:52.57 I mean, when you think about the hospital they've created, 00:07:52.60\00:07:55.50 their charitable work around the world it's remarkable 00:07:55.54\00:07:58.34 and I think we should, you know, 00:07:58.37\00:08:00.71 some people just throw everything and no. 00:08:00.74\00:08:03.71 Catholics have and are doing lot of good around the world. 00:08:03.75\00:08:08.45 And if the current Pope particularly has engage the-- 00:08:08.48\00:08:13.09 I mean, current global concerns like climate change, 00:08:13.12\00:08:18.99 inequality because the-- you know, 00:08:19.03\00:08:21.56 as you know the latest encyclical and-- 00:08:21.60\00:08:25.80 On the environment. On the environment. 00:08:25.83\00:08:27.64 But the one that I've thought you're going to refer to 00:08:27.67\00:08:29.40 is Caritas et Veritas. 00:08:29.44\00:08:31.24 No, no. 00:08:31.27\00:08:32.61 Veritate because it looks at everything. 00:08:32.64\00:08:34.54 Correct. 00:08:34.58\00:08:35.91 Sovereignty, labor relations, ecology and so on. 00:08:35.94\00:08:39.61 But this one though is very focus in-- 00:08:39.65\00:08:43.75 with issues that resonate with the global world. 00:08:43.79\00:08:46.55 And when you think about currently, 00:08:46.59\00:08:48.22 most of the meetings about climate justice, 00:08:48.26\00:08:51.16 about inequality, to an extreme and poverty and hunger. 00:08:51.19\00:08:55.46 These are wonderful points that he's raised. 00:08:55.50\00:08:57.63 And then actually taking the-- 00:08:57.67\00:08:59.07 both the millennium development goal 00:08:59.10\00:09:01.37 and the sustainable development goal 00:09:01.40\00:09:03.04 are the goals at the U.N. 00:09:03.07\00:09:05.01 So the-- I mean, Catholic Pope is definitely leaving his time, 00:09:05.04\00:09:10.45 wanting to be part of the change agents 00:09:10.48\00:09:13.11 around the world. 00:09:13.15\00:09:14.62 Now, the problem that would see is-- 00:09:14.65\00:09:19.02 I mean, if I say the problem it is the right-- 00:09:19.05\00:09:21.42 The complication. The complication, well-- 00:09:21.46\00:09:24.16 That's what I would say 00:09:24.19\00:09:25.53 but I don't want to put words in your mouth. 00:09:25.56\00:09:27.66 It is that people ought to know that also 00:09:27.70\00:09:30.67 that the Catholic are promoting their world view 00:09:30.70\00:09:33.40 but they have the right to do so. 00:09:33.44\00:09:34.77 Absolutely. 00:09:34.80\00:09:36.14 For example, in that same encyclical 00:09:36.17\00:09:38.71 where the pope, you know, 00:09:38.74\00:09:40.08 talk about environment and so forth, 00:09:40.11\00:09:41.71 he also gives suggestions about the understanding of Eucharist, 00:09:41.74\00:09:46.78 the role of Mary, the chain of Sunday-- 00:09:46.82\00:09:50.75 Sunday worship. 00:09:50.79\00:09:52.12 I mean, the importance of Sunday for the common good 00:09:52.15\00:09:54.09 etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. 00:09:54.12\00:09:55.46 So of course the world can enjoy, can appreciate, 00:09:55.49\00:10:01.33 can affirm, what the Catholic are doing without-- 00:10:01.36\00:10:05.43 And you're right, I'm glad 00:10:05.47\00:10:06.80 you're giving this balancing act 00:10:06.84\00:10:08.17 because if we were talking doctrine say-- 00:10:08.20\00:10:14.74 Baptist to Catholics or Adventist to Catholics, 00:10:14.78\00:10:17.58 then we can dissect it, 00:10:17.61\00:10:18.95 and can take it on a different level. 00:10:18.98\00:10:20.35 We're talking religious liberty in the international events. 00:10:20.38\00:10:22.88 We can't hold anyone accountable 00:10:22.92\00:10:25.65 for holding deeply held views that we may not share. 00:10:25.69\00:10:29.42 Religious freedom allows that. 00:10:29.46\00:10:30.83 Absolutely. Catholics have the right. 00:10:30.86\00:10:32.46 Where I have some apprehensions is-- 00:10:32.49\00:10:36.77 in the United States with its separation of church and state 00:10:36.80\00:10:39.90 we sort of blind sided when a head of state 00:10:39.93\00:10:42.67 who happens to be the head of a church comes in, 00:10:42.70\00:10:44.74 so you sort of it's a mix thing. 00:10:44.77\00:10:46.34 You're not sure one moment 00:10:46.37\00:10:48.08 these are very valid civil concepts 00:10:48.11\00:10:51.01 and then another moment the Sunday is introduced. 00:10:51.05\00:10:53.68 And I just think people are not quite protected. 00:10:53.72\00:10:56.85 The document Caritas et Veritate, 00:10:56.89\00:10:59.55 which is a great document. 00:11:01.72\00:11:03.06 It was actually reviewed by Hoppers -- 00:11:03.09\00:11:05.16 by New Republic as a civil document 00:11:05.19\00:11:09.13 and they said it's a wonderful out line of the problems. 00:11:09.16\00:11:12.43 But then it said the problem is, 00:11:12.47\00:11:13.97 you accept this document the Pope comes with it. 00:11:14.00\00:11:16.64 Well, that might even be fine, 00:11:16.67\00:11:18.34 but I was troubled there in that document, 00:11:18.37\00:11:20.81 his predecessor Benedict mentioned-- 00:11:20.84\00:11:24.21 he said, there is a need for a global authority, 00:11:24.25\00:11:27.38 a global-- 00:11:27.42\00:11:29.22 I think it was authority to deal with these issues, 00:11:29.25\00:11:32.29 with the power to act and the power to enforce. 00:11:32.32\00:11:34.76 I don't like it, and we're on religious liberty 00:11:34.79\00:11:36.96 we've already said you don't force. 00:11:36.99\00:11:38.79 So this is what-- So that's where I cautioned. 00:11:38.83\00:11:42.76 It's crossing a line that makes me uncomfortable. 00:11:42.80\00:11:45.87 Yeah, this is the reason why more than ever before 00:11:45.90\00:11:50.11 religious liberty should be put-- 00:11:50.14\00:11:52.47 Absolutely, front and center. 00:11:52.51\00:11:54.21 Yes, because it is again, a compound freedom 00:11:54.24\00:11:57.01 and it will keep us alert 00:11:57.05\00:11:59.21 that the domains will not be confused. 00:11:59.25\00:12:01.62 And for the United States, the constitution is important. 00:12:01.65\00:12:04.29 But I think this is the moment to remind ourselves 00:12:04.32\00:12:06.62 the reformation had real reasons 00:12:06.65\00:12:09.26 and we shouldn't have the religious wars 00:12:09.29\00:12:12.63 that followed it again. 00:12:12.66\00:12:14.46 But we should remind ourselves there are distinct differences 00:12:14.50\00:12:17.17 and when we hear a voice judge it on those parameters. 00:12:17.20\00:12:19.57 But again, I insist on the fact that 00:12:19.60\00:12:22.60 Jews have the right to believe 00:12:22.64\00:12:24.64 that they are the chosen people of God. 00:12:24.67\00:12:27.01 Muslim have the right to believe and to proclaim 00:12:27.04\00:12:30.51 that they have the perfect religion, they have that right. 00:12:30.55\00:12:35.95 Catholics have the right to believe that, you know, 00:12:35.98\00:12:39.05 that they are the only legitimate church 00:12:39.09\00:12:43.36 and the orthodox Christians get, 00:12:43.39\00:12:45.79 every religious denomination can claim. 00:12:45.83\00:12:50.20 Religious liberty allows that. 00:12:50.23\00:12:52.17 However, we should go deeper though 00:12:52.20\00:12:55.27 in sharing truth with each one. 00:12:55.30\00:12:57.81 And discussing and dialoging 00:12:57.84\00:13:00.74 for the betterment of the human family. 00:13:00.78\00:13:02.94 A few years ago a Country and Western Singer 00:13:05.85\00:13:09.02 of some fame recorded a music video with these words, 00:13:09.05\00:13:14.56 "Jesus spoke about it, the prophets wrote about it, 00:13:14.59\00:13:18.89 and it's going by the book." 00:13:18.93\00:13:21.43 when I see some of the events of recent days, 00:13:21.46\00:13:24.73 most particularly, the much ballyhooed people 00:13:24.77\00:13:28.50 visit to Washington D.C. 00:13:28.54\00:13:30.97 as well as some of the disasters, 00:13:31.01\00:13:33.84 the fires, the earth quacks, 00:13:33.88\00:13:35.71 the convolutions in one nation after another, 00:13:35.74\00:13:38.55 I'm reminded that it is indeed going by the book. 00:13:38.58\00:13:44.15 And as a religious liberty activist, 00:13:44.19\00:13:47.49 I'm reminded also that we need to speak freedom, 00:13:47.52\00:13:50.83 we need to speak of the liberty that's obtainable in Christ 00:13:50.86\00:13:54.76 while we can, because "the night cometh," 00:13:54.80\00:13:57.47 as Jesus said, "when no man can teach." 00:13:57.50\00:14:00.80 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln steed. 00:14:00.84\00:14:05.94
