Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:23.15\00:00:25.22 This is the program bringing you up-to-date news, views, 00:00:25.25\00:00:27.96 discussion, analysis and information 00:00:27.99\00:00:31.23 that you may not know on religious liberty concerns. 00:00:31.26\00:00:34.93 My name is Lincoln Steed, Editor of Liberty Magazine 00:00:34.96\00:00:38.20 and my guest on the program is Dr. Ganoune Diop. 00:00:38.23\00:00:41.57 Welcome, Ganoune. Thank you. 00:00:41.60\00:00:43.04 You are the Director of Public Affairs in Religious Liberty 00:00:43.07\00:00:47.21 for the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:00:47.24\00:00:49.51 also Secretary 00:00:49.54\00:00:51.11 of the Christian-willed communions. 00:00:51.15\00:00:53.78 And-- Secretary-- 00:00:53.82\00:00:55.68 I know you've got the International-- 00:00:55.72\00:00:57.09 Secretary General 00:00:57.12\00:00:58.45 of the International Religious Liberty Association. 00:00:58.49\00:00:59.82 Religious Liberty Association. Yes. 00:00:59.85\00:01:01.19 One of the oldest religious liberty organizations 00:01:01.22\00:01:05.03 charted in 1893, you know. 00:01:05.06\00:01:07.53 So the Adventist Church 00:01:07.56\00:01:09.73 initially supported this organization 00:01:09.76\00:01:12.50 but then it became an interdenominational, 00:01:12.53\00:01:15.20 international organization and even... 00:01:15.24\00:01:17.24 Had some wonderful activities. 00:01:17.27\00:01:20.64 You and I have been to some recent events. 00:01:20.68\00:01:23.95 I remember the one in Punta Cana. 00:01:23.98\00:01:26.31 That was the-- The Dominican Republic. 00:01:26.35\00:01:28.48 The Seventh World-- Were they, 800 people there? 00:01:28.52\00:01:30.92 Yes, 800 people. From all over the world. 00:01:30.95\00:01:33.32 Seventh World Congress 00:01:33.36\00:01:35.49 and actually there's one coming. 00:01:35.52\00:01:36.86 I was going to ask you. Where is the next one? 00:01:36.89\00:01:40.30 Well, the next one would be in Hollywood, Florida. 00:01:40.33\00:01:44.60 Actually in... That's really Fort Lauderdale. 00:01:44.63\00:01:46.90 I was just down. Yeah, Fort Lauderdale. 00:01:46.94\00:01:49.60 I mean, area and this will be in August 2017. 00:01:49.64\00:01:56.28 Yeah, we are working on it 00:01:56.31\00:01:58.15 and we'll have a lot of people coming from all over the world 00:01:58.18\00:02:01.58 precisely to look into religious freedom issue. 00:02:01.62\00:02:05.19 You know, this organization, 00:02:05.22\00:02:09.62 the International Religious Liberty Association 00:02:09.66\00:02:13.80 is involved in several activities, several functions, 00:02:13.83\00:02:18.03 again, for the promotion of religious liberty. 00:02:18.07\00:02:21.44 You mentioned the congresses 00:02:21.47\00:02:23.07 but there are festivals all over the world. 00:02:23.10\00:02:25.41 Do you have any festivals coming up? 00:02:25.44\00:02:27.81 I know you are predecessor to Dr. John Graz.. 00:02:27.84\00:02:29.91 Well, yes. 00:02:29.94\00:02:31.35 So why he is full of excitement and that the latest festival 00:02:31.38\00:02:33.92 were there were bigger and bigger crowd. 00:02:33.95\00:02:35.75 The largest, well, I think was about 80,000, wasn't it? 00:02:35.78\00:02:38.25 Yes. I know that was 10, 20, 30. 00:02:38.29\00:02:40.72 In Angola. Yes. 00:02:40.76\00:02:42.09 And but-- It's in Africa so-- 00:02:42.12\00:02:44.03 Mozambique, right there. 00:02:44.06\00:02:45.39 But there is one coming in Mexico City, 00:02:45.43\00:02:48.56 in January for example, 00:02:48.60\00:02:50.47 and there are others all over the world. 00:02:50.50\00:02:52.30 But there are also symposiums and interestingly 00:02:52.33\00:02:56.47 what it's called also meeting of experts. 00:02:56.50\00:02:57.91 Why? 00:02:57.94\00:02:59.27 Because the International Religious Liberty Association 00:02:59.31\00:03:01.51 would like to develop a culture of freedom of religion. 00:03:01.54\00:03:06.21 And it'd be a catalyst 00:03:06.25\00:03:07.58 for a religious liberty discussion and action. 00:03:07.62\00:03:10.02 And given what we said in one of the program 00:03:10.05\00:03:13.15 that religious liberty is really central 00:03:13.19\00:03:15.76 to all other freedom. 00:03:15.79\00:03:17.89 When you touch religious liberty, 00:03:17.93\00:03:19.49 it's so core that you touch other freedoms also. 00:03:19.53\00:03:23.93 So in the large, in a global perspective 00:03:23.97\00:03:27.70 that is like contributing 00:03:27.74\00:03:29.57 to develop a culture of human rights, you know. 00:03:29.60\00:03:33.01 So this is why and we have meeting of experts every year. 00:03:33.04\00:03:37.65 Once a year we have thinkers, 00:03:37.68\00:03:40.32 scholars from all over the world 00:03:40.35\00:03:43.08 gathering together and we have journals 00:03:43.12\00:03:46.89 like Fides et Libertas. 00:03:46.92\00:03:49.22 And Liberty had evolved more at that too. 00:03:49.26\00:03:51.46 Exactly. 00:03:51.49\00:03:52.89 Then we have also what we call The World Report. 00:03:52.93\00:03:55.93 Now The World Report is also an important function 00:03:55.96\00:03:58.83 in a sense, it look at every nation of the world, 00:03:58.87\00:04:02.24 I mean, every nation of the world. 00:04:02.27\00:04:04.24 Look at the geopolitical situation, one. 00:04:04.27\00:04:07.64 Then look at what the constitution of that nation 00:04:07.68\00:04:10.41 in particular says about religious liberty, 00:04:10.45\00:04:13.72 then how the government is complying to its constitution 00:04:13.75\00:04:17.89 and then another section of that world report would be 00:04:17.92\00:04:21.02 how the popular, you know, consciousness is reacting-- 00:04:21.06\00:04:24.53 It's a fabulous report. 00:04:24.56\00:04:25.89 In fact, I think only the US State Department 00:04:25.93\00:04:27.83 puts out anything comparable. 00:04:27.86\00:04:29.26 Yeah, and even though ours is more focused on Christians 00:04:29.30\00:04:33.60 and in particular, Seventh-day Adventist is like. 00:04:33.64\00:04:36.67 You can look at any nation in the world and see that, 00:04:36.71\00:04:41.18 "Ah, this is what the constitution say, 00:04:41.21\00:04:45.18 this is how the government is behaving, this is--" 00:04:45.21\00:04:49.22 Because sometimes you have government restrictions 00:04:49.25\00:04:51.85 but you also have popular hostility. 00:04:51.89\00:04:55.66 And so sometimes of course, 00:04:55.69\00:04:57.03 the combination of both and so forth, 00:04:57.06\00:04:59.19 so this really help us to better understand our world 00:04:59.23\00:05:03.06 and what people would like to do during this quinquennium. 00:05:03.10\00:05:07.84 Clearly this-- Five years. 00:05:07.87\00:05:10.01 Is to really allow every of course-- 00:05:10.04\00:05:13.91 Now and then plenty of it is important to you and even to me 00:05:13.94\00:05:17.18 because every five years our church re-elects the leaders. 00:05:17.21\00:05:21.18 Absolutely and since I was just elected so I can, 00:05:21.22\00:05:24.69 you know, speak about our vision 00:05:24.72\00:05:26.86 and mission statement and so forth 00:05:26.89\00:05:28.76 for the next five years 00:05:28.79\00:05:30.46 and one of which would be to empower, to enable every, 00:05:30.49\00:05:34.36 of course, Adventist but beyond the, 00:05:34.40\00:05:36.40 you know, beyond the church every person of good will, 00:05:36.43\00:05:40.34 who'd like to know more about religious freedom 00:05:40.37\00:05:43.24 and who'd like to join us actually 00:05:43.27\00:05:45.74 in promoting a culture of human rights, 00:05:45.77\00:05:48.58 in particular, scented on religious liberty 00:05:48.61\00:05:51.78 because it is a compound freedom, 00:05:51.81\00:05:53.98 it is central freedom, it is of course, as you know, 00:05:54.02\00:05:56.92 a constitutional provision and so forth and so on. 00:05:56.95\00:05:59.42 Particularly in the United States 00:05:59.45\00:06:00.86 where the constitution is not just giving a nod to what it is 00:06:00.89\00:06:04.46 as we said in another program. 00:06:04.49\00:06:06.06 Every constitution by and large in around the world, 00:06:06.09\00:06:10.13 even repressive countries gives a nod toward it. 00:06:10.17\00:06:12.63 But the United States is the one 00:06:12.67\00:06:14.00 I think is a very enabling constitution. 00:06:14.04\00:06:15.77 And not only that, concretely even, you know, 00:06:15.80\00:06:19.97 Congress has also, I mean, nominated commission 00:06:20.01\00:06:24.75 that looks more clearly, more intentionally 00:06:24.78\00:06:29.72 I must say about religious liberty which is good 00:06:29.75\00:06:33.25 and I wish that every country will have this kind of, 00:06:33.29\00:06:36.73 you know, commission that will help promote-- 00:06:36.76\00:06:39.86 And the US commission that was primarily concerned 00:06:39.89\00:06:42.03 with other the countries-- 00:06:42.06\00:06:43.40 Yes, but we know that this is-- 00:06:43.43\00:06:45.47 They don't self criticize very much so-- 00:06:45.50\00:06:47.04 But you know, this is a global phenomenon. 00:06:47.07\00:06:48.50 There's no country that has an absolute clean record 00:06:48.54\00:06:52.64 in terms of religious freedom. 00:06:52.67\00:06:54.48 But again, this is why and I come back to that 00:06:54.51\00:06:58.98 when you don't wait until things are perfect 00:06:59.01\00:07:01.78 in order to work for the good, you know, 00:07:01.82\00:07:04.55 this is extremely important. 00:07:04.59\00:07:06.02 And this is a good chance for me to interject a comment 00:07:06.05\00:07:08.66 that occurred to me when we were 00:07:08.69\00:07:10.03 talking about the festivals of religious freedom. 00:07:10.06\00:07:13.56 A numbers of those were held in countries 00:07:13.60\00:07:15.13 that were not sort of perfect on granting it, 00:07:15.16\00:07:18.53 but that's not the point. 00:07:18.57\00:07:20.00 It's to raise their awareness and to thank them 00:07:20.04\00:07:23.20 for what considerations the government has applied 00:07:23.24\00:07:27.01 and to encourage them to be more, 00:07:27.04\00:07:30.45 I'm trying to think not liberal, but more open 00:07:30.48\00:07:32.61 and accurate in administering religious practice. 00:07:32.65\00:07:36.08 And this is why some criticism against the UN 00:07:36.12\00:07:39.35 are unfounded to a lot degree, again, 00:07:39.39\00:07:42.02 I represent the Seventh-day church, 00:07:42.06\00:07:43.73 I'm not representing the UN, right? 00:07:43.76\00:07:46.03 But when it comes to truth telling, 00:07:46.06\00:07:48.20 I think this is something that 00:07:48.23\00:07:50.23 we should share with all and it is important. 00:07:50.27\00:07:53.13 There are nations at the UN with some functions 00:07:53.17\00:07:55.80 that seem to contradict their national record. 00:07:55.84\00:07:59.21 So shall we shame and blame and say, 00:07:59.24\00:08:01.54 "See, you know, how can you be a part of this commission. 00:08:01.58\00:08:04.71 Look at your record in your nation." 00:08:04.75\00:08:07.02 But actually there's a synergy, a dynamic at the UN. 00:08:07.05\00:08:11.82 These ought to be allowed so that by mingling with others 00:08:11.85\00:08:15.96 those same country 00:08:15.99\00:08:17.33 violating other people's rights and so forth, 00:08:17.36\00:08:19.53 may join the human family and learn, you know-- 00:08:19.56\00:08:23.00 It's true and I'll tell you one area 00:08:23.03\00:08:25.07 that I have noticed this at work. 00:08:25.10\00:08:26.60 You know, every year for the last was it 14 years 00:08:26.63\00:08:29.30 we had our Liberty dinner in Washington 00:08:29.34\00:08:31.81 and we, Liberty Magazine 00:08:31.84\00:08:33.88 and one of your predecessor's associate-- 00:08:33.91\00:08:36.51 I think you founded it-- 00:08:36.54\00:08:37.88 I was with Liberty mainly 00:08:37.91\00:08:39.25 but working with the General Conference liaison. 00:08:39.28\00:08:41.92 We started this Liberty dinner. 00:08:41.95\00:08:44.55 And we wish more came but we've got 00:08:44.59\00:08:47.46 reasonable representation from Congressmen and Senators 00:08:47.49\00:08:50.89 and the from the Diplomatic community. 00:08:50.93\00:08:53.43 And I've noticed every year we have a good sprinkling 00:08:53.46\00:08:56.73 of either ambassadors or top officials 00:08:56.77\00:09:00.04 from the different embassies from precisely the countries 00:09:00.07\00:09:03.27 that you and I would think of "where the worst problem is?" 00:09:03.30\00:09:06.21 And yet they are attracted to come along-- 00:09:06.24\00:09:07.68 No question. 00:09:07.71\00:09:09.04 To find out more about religious liberty 00:09:09.08\00:09:10.98 and to show by their presence 00:09:11.01\00:09:12.48 that they are interested, that they want it. 00:09:12.51\00:09:14.72 So we shouldn't describe 00:09:14.75\00:09:16.72 the worst of motives to these countries. 00:09:16.75\00:09:18.62 Sometimes they sort of reflexly act the way they do 00:09:18.65\00:09:21.36 because of their political ideology or their societies, 00:09:21.39\00:09:26.33 say, if it's a Buddhist society, 00:09:26.36\00:09:27.70 it's not open immediate to another religion 00:09:27.73\00:09:30.70 but they want to change 00:09:30.73\00:09:32.07 and I think the United Nations has done a lot to creating-- 00:09:32.10\00:09:35.50 No question and I-- 00:09:35.54\00:09:36.87 This liberalizing human rights approach. 00:09:36.91\00:09:41.24 And a space had to be created where no paternalism exist 00:09:41.28\00:09:48.12 because sometimes, some nations think that, 00:09:48.15\00:09:49.95 "Okay, the others are less advanced on this and that." 00:09:49.98\00:09:52.65 That is totally unacceptable. 00:09:52.69\00:09:54.49 I think equality should be the basis of an interaction. 00:09:54.52\00:09:59.49 Speaking together, respecting other people's value 00:09:59.53\00:10:03.00 and dignities and of course, talking. 00:10:03.03\00:10:05.23 That is the foundation for democracy 00:10:05.27\00:10:07.67 where people can speak up and out and you know, 00:10:07.70\00:10:11.07 sharing their values without coercion, you know, 00:10:11.11\00:10:14.44 without patronizing or being paternalistic or the you know-- 00:10:14.48\00:10:17.88 Right. 00:10:17.91\00:10:19.25 And even a lot of the events that you hold and isn't there-- 00:10:19.28\00:10:21.98 next year you have a dialogue, one day dialogue 00:10:23.99\00:10:27.49 at the museum in Washington, DC. 00:10:27.52\00:10:29.89 Correct, correct. 00:10:29.92\00:10:31.26 And this I believe what we characterize 00:10:31.29\00:10:32.69 what you just said, where we bring in together 00:10:32.73\00:10:34.36 a bunch of experts in different views on religion liberty, 00:10:34.40\00:10:37.97 all of them won't to exemplify what you and I directly hold 00:10:38.00\00:10:41.50 but there will be encouraged toward our view. 00:10:41.54\00:10:44.24 It will give us a vehicle to present how we see it. 00:10:44.27\00:10:47.88 And people may-- 00:10:47.91\00:10:49.24 Moving people in the right direction. 00:10:49.28\00:10:50.61 Absolutely and people may not even have 00:10:50.65\00:10:52.05 the same moral foundations 00:10:52.08\00:10:55.68 about the same values that they defend. 00:10:55.72\00:10:58.05 But this is where by talking to each other 00:10:58.09\00:11:01.66 on some things you would differ 00:11:01.69\00:11:03.22 but some others they are intersection 00:11:03.26\00:11:05.09 so you work on that, this is like bridge building. 00:11:05.13\00:11:08.66 It is important that people start 00:11:08.70\00:11:10.67 where they have some common values in order, 00:11:10.70\00:11:14.24 again, the goal is to make this world a better place for many. 00:11:14.27\00:11:17.87 Even though we Adventists are people of hope, 00:11:17.91\00:11:20.34 we are waiting for a better world, you know, 00:11:20.38\00:11:22.58 and this is why we-- 00:11:22.61\00:11:25.05 Even Jesus said, "Occupy till I come." 00:11:25.08\00:11:28.28 In the meantime we shouldn't throw up our hands and say, 00:11:28.32\00:11:30.89 "The world is hopeless, there's nothing we can do." 00:11:30.92\00:11:32.75 And there's a beautiful-- 00:11:32.79\00:11:34.12 We need to work for the knowledge of God 00:11:34.16\00:11:35.49 and free values that honor God by their very existence. 00:11:35.52\00:11:40.66 There's a beautiful statement of a Rabbi who say that, 00:11:40.70\00:11:43.37 "If he knew the world would end tomorrow he would build, 00:11:43.40\00:11:46.57 he would plant a tree today." 00:11:46.60\00:11:49.07 You see, so that means that 00:11:49.10\00:11:50.71 you do good for the sake of doing good. 00:11:50.74\00:11:53.71 Regardless of, you know, 00:11:53.74\00:11:55.78 what tomorrow could bring and so forth. 00:11:55.81\00:11:58.25 Let's take a break now and come back after the break. 00:11:58.28\00:12:01.75 I want to move the discussion 00:12:01.78\00:12:04.15 to something quite contemporary. 00:12:04.19\00:12:06.35 Stay with us. 00:12:06.39\00:12:07.72
