Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:23.99\00:00:26.02 This is the program bringing you news, views, 00:00:26.05\00:00:28.16 discussion, up to date information, 00:00:28.19\00:00:29.82 analysis, all of religious liberty. 00:00:29.86\00:00:33.73 My name is Lincoln Steed, editor of Liberty magazine, 00:00:33.76\00:00:37.23 and my guest on the program is Dr. Ganoune Diop. 00:00:37.27\00:00:40.40 Welcome, Ganoune. Thank you, Thank you. 00:00:40.44\00:00:43.00 You're Director of Public Affairs and Religious Liberty 00:00:43.04\00:00:46.07 for the Seventh Day Adventist Church? 00:00:46.11\00:00:47.74 Correct. 00:00:47.78\00:00:49.11 And also a, a close workmate of mine 00:00:49.14\00:00:52.21 because we're just across the hall from each other 00:00:52.25\00:00:53.92 at our world headquarters. 00:00:53.95\00:00:55.28 I want to talk a little bit about Seventh-day Adventism 00:00:57.09\00:01:00.42 and religious liberty. 00:01:00.46\00:01:02.86 The two things are joined at the hip. 00:01:02.89\00:01:07.16 For me when I think of religious liberty in my church, 00:01:07.20\00:01:11.07 I think of prophecy, or prophetic awareness. 00:01:11.10\00:01:14.47 That's true, our religious liberty concern 00:01:14.50\00:01:16.34 has a sociological historic connection as well. 00:01:16.37\00:01:19.81 But what we read, as a people from Revelation and Daniel, 00:01:19.84\00:01:25.95 I think gives compulsion 00:01:25.98\00:01:29.22 to the religious liberty proclamation. 00:01:29.25\00:01:33.76 I know Daniel is every important here. 00:01:33.79\00:01:36.29 How would you link Daniel 00:01:36.32\00:01:37.76 to what we say on religious liberty? 00:01:37.79\00:01:39.79 Well, before may be the name itself, Seventh-day Adventist-- 00:01:39.83\00:01:45.37 I was, as I was speaking I thought of the comment-- 00:01:45.40\00:01:47.67 You thought about that-- 00:01:47.70\00:01:49.04 That their name is a sermon in itself, isn't it? 00:01:49.07\00:01:51.07 Yes, well, yes. 00:01:51.11\00:01:53.07 Actually, every name of-- 00:01:53.11\00:01:54.68 even of every denomination is meaningful, 00:01:54.71\00:01:56.91 is connected to something, 00:01:56.95\00:01:58.61 but I think exploring the name Seventh-day Adventist, 00:01:58.65\00:02:02.72 we have two components here, the first one, seventh day, 00:02:02.75\00:02:05.82 of course, referring to the seventh, 00:02:05.85\00:02:08.49 I mean, the seventh day Sabbath of creation. 00:02:08.52\00:02:11.56 Which the Pope Francis acknowledged this 00:02:11.59\00:02:15.16 in his encyclical on the environment. 00:02:15.20\00:02:18.20 He tries to confine it just to the Jews, remember, 00:02:18.23\00:02:20.94 but it's a very Biblical concept. 00:02:20.97\00:02:22.87 But, yeah, so the name Seventh-day Adventist, 00:02:22.90\00:02:25.27 the first part is connected to creation, 00:02:25.31\00:02:29.58 and when I think about creation, 00:02:29.61\00:02:32.01 and this is one aspect 00:02:32.05\00:02:33.45 that people usually don't think about but, 00:02:33.48\00:02:37.82 the reason why Adventists value creation 00:02:37.85\00:02:41.72 is because it affirms several key principles 00:02:41.76\00:02:44.83 about human being, human nature. 00:02:44.86\00:02:48.26 You know, first of all, creation in God's image, 00:02:48.30\00:02:50.87 that human beings are not just the result of a chance, 00:02:50.90\00:02:54.84 that we are willed by God who loves us-- 00:02:54.87\00:02:58.57 Created for a purpose. Absolutely. 00:02:58.61\00:03:00.34 And I think that is important to-- 00:03:00.38\00:03:02.14 Intentional. 00:03:02.18\00:03:03.51 So, Adventists value life precisely, 00:03:03.55\00:03:06.51 and the sanctity of life and of conscience, 00:03:06.55\00:03:09.52 in that sense, as we were talking 00:03:09.55\00:03:11.35 because our very name says something about that. 00:03:11.39\00:03:15.26 Okay, so creation, 00:03:15.29\00:03:17.33 and also the names Seventh-Day referring to creation, 00:03:17.36\00:03:24.30 it's also a commemoration of other things. 00:03:24.33\00:03:27.54 It is interesting to mention this right away, 00:03:27.57\00:03:32.11 Adventists take the seventh day as important 00:03:32.14\00:03:37.08 because it was not just the commemoration of creation, 00:03:37.11\00:03:40.42 when you read Exodus 20, The Ten Commandments, 00:03:40.45\00:03:44.42 the God says that-- 00:03:44.45\00:03:47.76 Deliverance, the Celebration of deliverance. 00:03:47.79\00:03:49.12 Exactly, that He gave Israel, in Deuteronomy 5, for example, 00:03:49.16\00:03:53.83 He gave Israel the Sabbath 00:03:53.86\00:03:55.40 because it was commemoration of liberation. 00:03:55.43\00:03:58.37 So, these two components of the first aspect 00:03:58.40\00:04:01.64 of the Seventh-day Adventist name 00:04:01.67\00:04:03.24 I think is very important-- 00:04:03.27\00:04:05.31 But it's worth remembering, that in Genesis when it says 00:04:05.34\00:04:09.14 God sanctified the day and made it holy. 00:04:09.18\00:04:11.05 That predated any Jewish or-- Jewish nation. 00:04:11.08\00:04:14.62 Yeah, but in the context of the teaching 00:04:14.65\00:04:17.52 of the whole Bible though, 00:04:17.55\00:04:18.89 very clearly it is connected to creation and to liberation. 00:04:18.92\00:04:22.19 So, that is the first part of the name. 00:04:22.22\00:04:24.79 And the second part of the name Adventist is, 00:04:24.83\00:04:27.73 is a word of hope 00:04:27.76\00:04:29.36 because Adventists are actively waiting 00:04:29.40\00:04:32.50 for the coming of Jesus Christ. 00:04:32.53\00:04:34.74 The Second Advent because He came once before. 00:04:34.77\00:04:36.67 Yes. 00:04:36.71\00:04:38.04 But, this coming is decisive 00:04:38.07\00:04:40.28 because He's coming to bring justice, harmony, 00:04:40.31\00:04:45.38 peace, and complete freedom, 00:04:45.41\00:04:48.85 and including freedom from death 00:04:48.88\00:04:50.92 which is part of our hope. 00:04:50.95\00:04:53.12 So the name itself actually is a statement creation, 00:04:53.15\00:04:58.09 redemption, and completion of the history of Salvation. 00:04:58.13\00:05:00.76 It does pretty much, 00:05:00.80\00:05:03.23 it's been said by ourselves before. 00:05:03.26\00:05:04.60 It sums up pretty much everything that we hold. 00:05:04.63\00:05:06.23 It is good news, it is good news 00:05:06.27\00:05:08.34 that, Lincoln, you are important to God. 00:05:08.37\00:05:11.31 It is good news that God has set up a plan to liberate you. 00:05:11.34\00:05:15.48 It is good news that God is going to come to liberate 00:05:15.51\00:05:18.05 not only you but the whole universe. 00:05:18.08\00:05:20.62 This is why creation, the nature is awaiting 00:05:20.65\00:05:24.55 for this second coming of Jesus Christ, to come, 00:05:24.59\00:05:28.52 to bring finally what the world is looking for. 00:05:28.56\00:05:31.79 Remember earlier, I mentioned, 00:05:31.83\00:05:33.76 I mean, in another program 00:05:33.80\00:05:35.73 I mentioned what the world wants. 00:05:35.76\00:05:38.07 The UN, you know, they want peace and security, 00:05:38.10\00:05:40.04 while Jesus is going to bring peace and security. 00:05:40.07\00:05:42.30 Yeah, and what it says in Revelation, 00:05:42.34\00:05:44.34 when they say peace and security, 00:05:44.37\00:05:45.84 sudden destruction, so if it's on man's own, 00:05:45.87\00:05:48.31 if it's alone, it's destined to fail. 00:05:48.34\00:05:49.94 Yeah, but God wants not the destruction of people, 00:05:49.98\00:05:52.88 He wants their salvation. 00:05:52.91\00:05:55.25 Well, it says "He's not willing that any should perish." 00:05:55.28\00:05:57.39 "Perish, but that all should have access to salvation." 00:05:57.42\00:06:01.49 You know because, sometimes some people 00:06:01.52\00:06:04.69 may tend to think about God as a sadistic person, 00:06:04.73\00:06:08.83 just waiting to punish everybody, 00:06:08.86\00:06:10.60 whereas He died himself on the Cross 00:06:10.63\00:06:14.04 in order to tell people that He would rather have them leave 00:06:14.07\00:06:18.14 you know, this is, I mean, absolute love also, 00:06:18.17\00:06:21.38 and that is part of God's nature. 00:06:21.41\00:06:23.04 Now when we come, so this is about the name, 00:06:23.08\00:06:26.78 you know, talking about creation, 00:06:26.82\00:06:28.72 liberation, and consummation, 00:06:28.75\00:06:31.19 redemption, complete atonement, complete reconciliation. 00:06:31.22\00:06:34.99 Bring Daniel in. It's beautiful. 00:06:35.02\00:06:37.53 When you come to Book of Daniel, 00:06:37.56\00:06:39.69 like, actually any Biblical book, 00:06:39.73\00:06:41.43 we could take here any, especially the prophetic books. 00:06:41.46\00:06:45.83 They are gospels in prophecy, meaning, okay, 00:06:45.87\00:06:50.01 the Book of Daniel has about, 00:06:50.04\00:06:52.34 well, has actually specifically 12 chapters. 00:06:52.37\00:06:55.84 But every, what is called prophetic chapters, 00:06:55.88\00:06:59.01 is actually aspect of the good news. 00:06:59.05\00:07:01.08 Now imagine, imagine this, 00:07:01.12\00:07:05.99 we are talking about 605 B.C. 00:07:06.02\00:07:10.63 the prophet Daniel was exiled Babylon, 00:07:10.66\00:07:15.06 and while he was there, 586, the temple destroyed. 00:07:15.10\00:07:21.04 Israel has lost several things. 00:07:21.07\00:07:22.94 Really was the end of the true integrated Jewish State 00:07:22.97\00:07:29.41 or beyond then. 00:07:29.44\00:07:31.55 Well, it was a follow on story really. 00:07:31.58\00:07:34.12 It's the dispersion. 00:07:34.15\00:07:36.18 True, but you had a first dispersion earlier, 00:07:36.22\00:07:41.32 there are two tragic dates in the history of Israel, 00:07:41.36\00:07:44.83 722 B.C. and then 586 B.C. 00:07:44.86\00:07:49.36 And in a way there's a third 00:07:49.40\00:07:50.73 when Titus destroyed Jerusalem irrevocably for-- 00:07:50.77\00:07:53.87 Absolutely. 00:07:53.90\00:07:55.24 But, I am talking about now, the kingship dynasty. 00:07:55.27\00:07:59.77 The Samaria was taken by the Assyrians in 722. 00:07:59.81\00:08:03.78 That was the end of the northern kingdom, 00:08:03.81\00:08:05.88 the ten tribes, 00:08:05.91\00:08:08.15 and then you have the southern kingdom, 586, 00:08:08.18\00:08:11.05 the temple destroyed. 00:08:11.09\00:08:12.42 But here is my point though, 00:08:12.45\00:08:14.62 the Book of Daniel is a magnificent display 00:08:14.66\00:08:17.29 of the good news, how so? 00:08:17.33\00:08:21.13 Israel has lost several things. 00:08:21.16\00:08:22.96 One, they have lost their kingdom. 00:08:23.00\00:08:26.43 They have lost their king actually, you know, 00:08:26.47\00:08:28.57 and if you read the second book of Chronicles, 00:08:28.60\00:08:32.57 it, you know, Chapter 36, the last verses explains 00:08:32.61\00:08:37.48 that God sent several prophets time and again, 00:08:37.51\00:08:40.65 but Israel did not listen. 00:08:40.68\00:08:42.28 So they lost their kingdom, they lost their king, 00:08:42.32\00:08:45.55 they lost their temple, destroyed 00:08:45.59\00:08:47.76 and if the temple is destroyed 00:08:47.79\00:08:49.32 that means that the priests cannot function, 00:08:49.36\00:08:52.03 the priest cannot function, sacrifice has to stop. 00:08:52.06\00:08:55.40 Really religious life had seized. 00:08:55.43\00:08:57.13 Absolutely. Or an entity. 00:08:57.17\00:08:58.77 So what is the Book of Daniel simply stated? 00:08:58.80\00:09:01.34 The Book of Daniel is God's response. 00:09:01.37\00:09:03.47 In fact, that Psalm, isn't it? 00:09:03.51\00:09:06.78 "By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down and we wept." 00:09:06.81\00:09:09.14 Correct. But-- 00:09:09.18\00:09:10.51 There was a desolation that had come up on them. 00:09:10.55\00:09:11.88 Yes, absolutely, and this is, 00:09:11.91\00:09:14.75 as I mentioned a multi faceted desolation. 00:09:14.78\00:09:17.69 However, what could be interesting 00:09:17.72\00:09:21.32 for our viewers here is to realize 00:09:21.36\00:09:24.76 that they had local problems, they had temporal problems. 00:09:24.79\00:09:31.67 One, the temple, I mentioned the kingdom lost, 00:09:31.70\00:09:37.31 the king exiled, the temple destroyed, 00:09:37.34\00:09:41.44 sacrifice, no longer, 00:09:41.48\00:09:43.31 the priest cannot function therefore. 00:09:43.35\00:09:45.28 Okay, the Book of Daniel. 00:09:45.31\00:09:47.02 So imagine Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego asking God, 00:09:47.05\00:09:50.69 God, restore our kingdom. 00:09:50.72\00:09:54.22 And this is where the prophecies 00:09:54.26\00:09:55.79 of the Book of Daniel come into the picture. 00:09:55.82\00:09:59.16 God, so to speak, telling these Hebrew young men, 00:09:59.19\00:10:05.97 I am not interested in a local, in a temporal kingdom. 00:10:06.00\00:10:10.51 Daniel 2, there's an everlasting kingdom. 00:10:10.54\00:10:13.51 Yeah, it's true. 00:10:13.54\00:10:14.88 Universal and everlasting that is coming, 00:10:14.91\00:10:16.85 that is God's answer, good news of the kingdom. 00:10:16.88\00:10:19.88 By the way in the New Testament, 00:10:19.91\00:10:21.85 Jesus preached the kingdom of God, 00:10:21.88\00:10:24.19 that kingdom prophesied in Daniel. 00:10:24.22\00:10:26.29 Second, the next prophetic chapter, 00:10:26.32\00:10:29.59 beside Chapter 2 then is Chapter 7. 00:10:29.62\00:10:32.03 What is in Daniel 7? 00:10:32.06\00:10:35.06 Daniel 7, you have the son of man coming, being enthroned, 00:10:35.10\00:10:39.43 and we are told all people will worship Him. 00:10:39.47\00:10:43.00 So that is the everlasting-- 00:10:43.04\00:10:44.37 On a cosmic level, it's not a nation or regional-- 00:10:44.41\00:10:47.14 Absolutely, not just national problems. 00:10:47.18\00:10:49.98 Now God's responses are on a cosmic and eternal. 00:10:50.01\00:10:54.82 Okay, then the temple destroyed. 00:10:54.85\00:10:58.15 So what about the temple? 00:10:58.19\00:10:59.95 God said, "I have a temple in heaven." 00:10:59.99\00:11:02.02 Okay. And then how about the priest? 00:11:02.06\00:11:05.03 Again, a priest in heaven this is where? 00:11:05.06\00:11:08.23 And that is Chapter 8, interestingly. 00:11:08.26\00:11:11.03 Okay, so imagine, Shadrach, Meshach, 00:11:11.07\00:11:12.97 Abednego again asking God, 00:11:13.00\00:11:14.77 but what about, what about the sacrifices? 00:11:14.80\00:11:19.31 Daniel 9, come and say that 00:11:19.34\00:11:21.94 He will cause sacrifices to seize, 00:11:21.98\00:11:24.61 one sacrifice, once ends for all. 00:11:24.65\00:11:28.45 So we have- 00:11:28.48\00:11:30.29 It's interesting way of looking at it, 00:11:30.32\00:11:31.65 and in an accurate way, yeah. 00:11:31.69\00:11:34.89 And simple way, you know. And then-- 00:11:34.92\00:11:37.59 And of course, this is all against the historic background 00:11:37.63\00:11:39.49 of events through several kingdoms. 00:11:39.53\00:11:41.80 But this is the core Gospel. 00:11:41.83\00:11:43.16 Actually I would even say a comprehensive gospel, 00:11:43.20\00:11:46.74 in a sense that we are told that the Messiah, 00:11:46.77\00:11:50.01 this is the 70 weeks' prophecy. 00:11:50.04\00:11:52.74 The Messiah, you know, at the end of the last week 00:11:52.77\00:11:56.85 will cause the sacrifice to seize, 00:11:56.88\00:11:58.21 and He will bring everlasting righteousness again. 00:11:58.25\00:12:01.72 But then, Chapter 10 to 12, 00:12:01.75\00:12:03.72 the Archangel is sent to tell Daniel 00:12:07.92\00:12:12.39 about is going to happen to his people. 00:12:12.43\00:12:14.86 It's when Daniel was struck. 00:12:14.90\00:12:16.80 And that's wonderful because Chapter 12 begins 00:12:16.83\00:12:20.67 with the Michael standing. 00:12:20.70\00:12:23.71 Why standing? 00:12:23.74\00:12:25.17 The priest standing for God's people to defend them 00:12:25.21\00:12:29.21 the priest protection, and then finally, 00:12:29.24\00:12:32.08 God told Daniel, Daniel, you will sleep. 00:12:32.11\00:12:34.78 Notice, there is no immortality of the soul here. 00:12:34.82\00:12:37.05 You will sleep, there will be a resurrection. 00:12:37.09\00:12:39.65 The book begins with a, I mean, tragedy, you know, 00:12:39.69\00:12:44.99 as you were mentioning earlier, desolation, exile, 00:12:45.03\00:12:49.96 and it ends with life, and resurrection. 00:12:50.00\00:12:53.10 It's a wonderful, wonderful book, 00:12:53.13\00:12:54.47 and of course, Daniel on Revelation 00:12:54.50\00:12:56.37 are essential to an Adventist understanding. 00:12:56.40\00:12:58.71 We'll be back after a short break. 00:12:58.74\00:13:00.34 Stay with us. 00:13:00.38\00:13:01.71 Interesting discussion from the Book of Daniel 00:13:01.74\00:13:04.01 and I think Revelation too, right? 00:13:04.05\00:13:06.01
