Welcome to 'The Liberty Insider,' 00:00:23.55\00:00:25.55 this is a program bringing you a discussion, news, 00:00:25.59\00:00:27.92 updates and analysis of religious liberty events 00:00:27.96\00:00:30.86 and developments around the world 00:00:30.89\00:00:32.49 of course in the United States, where we're based. 00:00:32.53\00:00:35.73 My name is Lincoln Steed, editor Of Liberty magazine 00:00:35.76\00:00:39.13 and my guest is Ambassador, John Nay, 00:00:39.17\00:00:42.30 before his retirement, 00:00:42.34\00:00:43.67 you're last ambassador to Suriname, 00:00:43.71\00:00:45.94 but you had a lifetime of global experiences 00:00:45.97\00:00:50.25 working with the United States. 00:00:50.28\00:00:53.48 You're an Seventh Adventist. Yes. 00:00:53.52\00:00:54.85 We're talking about religious liberty. 00:00:54.88\00:00:56.55 Do you have any experiences of it or yourself 00:00:56.58\00:00:58.79 or your family where the religious liberty, 00:00:58.82\00:01:01.39 work or the department really made a difference? 00:01:01.42\00:01:04.76 Well, one issue that I remember a story, 00:01:04.79\00:01:08.96 I remember from when I was very small 00:01:09.00\00:01:10.70 was my grandmother explaining that her father 00:01:10.73\00:01:13.03 ah, no, I take it back, 00:01:13.07\00:01:15.40 her grandfather had been fired from his job 00:01:15.44\00:01:19.17 as a street conductor in Battle Creek 00:01:19.21\00:01:21.84 for not being willing to work on Sabbath." 00:01:21.88\00:01:24.88 In Battle Creek, which is sort of that... 00:01:24.91\00:01:26.25 Yes, but, but it was my grandmother's... 00:01:26.28\00:01:27.98 Ground-zero. 00:01:28.02\00:01:29.35 My grandmother's grandfather, 00:01:29.38\00:01:30.72 so it was back quite a long time ago 00:01:30.75\00:01:33.36 and I remember her telling me that when I was small. 00:01:33.39\00:01:36.29 And so there was no... 00:01:36.32\00:01:38.79 religious liberty department at that time, 00:01:38.83\00:01:40.40 I think he just lost his job 00:01:40.43\00:01:41.76 and had to go do something else. 00:01:41.80\00:01:43.30 Well, he might've been but they did to get evolved. 00:01:43.33\00:01:45.50 Now, uh, you know, as church's religious 00:01:45.53\00:01:47.04 liberty departments just started in the 1880s... 00:01:47.07\00:01:50.27 with 80 gents, there was a little bit of a... 00:01:50.31\00:01:53.84 down point from to around the trend of the century. 00:01:53.88\00:01:58.08 And then in 1906 00:01:58.58\00:02:00.35 Liberty Magazine recommends publication and all 00:02:00.38\00:02:03.42 I know it's a, the department's been active ever since, 00:02:03.45\00:02:06.99 but of course there's different crisis points 00:02:07.02\00:02:09.69 and during the wars 00:02:09.72\00:02:11.36 there's been a religious liberty issue with the military 00:02:11.39\00:02:13.66 and periodically, currently we don't have an official one. 00:02:13.70\00:02:17.63 Hmm. Okay But, we should. 00:02:17.67\00:02:19.63 I don't know if you have any knowledge of that. 00:02:19.67\00:02:22.64 No. You and I have some... 00:02:22.67\00:02:25.67 genetic memories I think of the Vietnam are you... 00:02:25.71\00:02:28.98 Yes. 00:02:29.01\00:02:30.35 And there were accommodations 00:02:30.38\00:02:32.35 not just for Seventh Day Adventists, 00:02:32.38\00:02:33.72 but for people with religious differences and Adventist... 00:02:34.22\00:02:39.19 could go into the, to the economy-- 00:02:39.22\00:02:42.96 I'm trying to think what they called it-- 00:02:42.99\00:02:44.83 Brother wears the white coats Medics. 00:02:44.86\00:02:46.19 Well, I was a medic. 00:02:46.23\00:02:47.56 And that I was fishing for the medics. 00:02:47.60\00:02:49.83 Where they would not bare arms, didn't have to bare arms 00:02:49.86\00:02:52.87 or there was the alternative going in it as the white coats, 00:02:52.90\00:02:55.40 which was the experimental, we don't want to know to much 00:02:55.44\00:02:58.34 about what they were doing but I had a friend 00:02:58.37\00:03:00.41 and that would go in once a day and be injected 00:03:00.44\00:03:02.91 with something or the other 00:03:02.94\00:03:04.28 and then been tested afterwards. 00:03:04.31\00:03:06.75 So it's not a direct issue then, 00:03:06.78\00:03:08.85 there were accommodations, 00:03:08.88\00:03:10.22 but now, with the volunteer army 00:03:10.25\00:03:13.82 there's not the same rights, they've given away... 00:03:13.86\00:03:16.89 more completely, and curiously we don't have calls from people 00:03:16.93\00:03:20.76 even though there's no way you can go into the military 00:03:20.80\00:03:23.53 and say I'm not bearing arms 00:03:23.57\00:03:25.60 and there's no way you can go in and say 00:03:25.63\00:03:27.20 "I must have Sabbath accommodations." 00:03:27.24\00:03:30.21 Might get it in particular instance 00:03:30.24\00:03:32.44 but it's all most certain that most Adventist 00:03:32.47\00:03:36.08 and other people of faith are in a compromise situation, 00:03:36.11\00:03:39.18 so it's quite sad, but it's not a, 00:03:39.21\00:03:41.82 it's not a dynamic issue with us today. 00:03:41.85\00:03:43.99 It would be ah, it would be difficult. 00:03:44.02\00:03:46.19 Yeah. 00:03:46.22\00:03:47.76 But what you say of that you're... 00:03:47.79\00:03:49.86 They were so... You're is? 00:03:49.89\00:03:51.23 My great, great grandfather 00:03:51.26\00:03:52.59 and actually would have been in the 1870s 00:03:52.63\00:03:56.10 that he had this happen. 00:03:56.13\00:03:58.43 Wow, that's good he him till the-- 00:03:58.47\00:04:00.37 My great grandfather his son had been born in 1877 00:04:00.40\00:04:03.71 so it was a-- 00:04:03.74\00:04:05.07 So, what generation Seventh Day Adventist are you? 00:04:05.11\00:04:06.91 Well, where would that be uh, you know, one, two, 00:04:06.94\00:04:09.14 three, four, five at least fifth, yeah. 00:04:09.18\00:04:11.01 Yeah, I think it's fifth? 00:04:11.05\00:04:14.02 I think I'm first Yeah. 00:04:14.05\00:04:16.25 Can't get it back much further than that. 00:04:16.28\00:04:17.99 you're another, well, religious economy. 00:04:18.02\00:04:21.02 Certainly, I have uh, had interaction in contact 00:04:21.06\00:04:24.73 with various officials of the church 00:04:24.76\00:04:27.46 during the course of my career 00:04:27.50\00:04:29.16 and I remember the general conference president 00:04:29.20\00:04:31.67 coming to visit India when I was there 00:04:31.70\00:04:34.60 that was a you know, Elder Paulsen, 00:04:34.64\00:04:37.31 and so, you know meeting him 00:04:37.34\00:04:40.08 as he had a chance to visit New Delhi-- 00:04:40.11\00:04:44.21 And you were in New Delhi? I was. 00:04:44.25\00:04:45.81 I was at the embassy in New Delhi. 00:04:45.85\00:04:47.22 Yeah. 00:04:47.25\00:04:49.68 You know, so I can't say that I had direct interaction 00:04:49.72\00:04:55.02 with religious liberty officials 00:04:55.06\00:04:58.49 in terms of being involved in trying to-- 00:04:58.53\00:05:01.90 you know, people maintain their religious freedom. 00:05:01.93\00:05:04.80 But, did, did you... I mean obviously on a personal level 00:05:04.83\00:05:09.94 I'm sure you had many contacts with Adventist-- 00:05:09.97\00:05:12.47 Oh! fellow Adventist? All the time. 00:05:12.51\00:05:14.04 But was the church particularly aware 00:05:14.08\00:05:17.55 that you are holding these different positions? 00:05:17.58\00:05:19.45 Oh! Absolutely. In fact-- 00:05:19.48\00:05:21.68 'Cause I'm asking that for a reason, but continue. 00:05:21.72\00:05:23.75 You know, everybody knew where we worked 00:05:23.79\00:05:26.15 you know, if you were a foreigner 00:05:26.19\00:05:28.56 and you showed up at church, 00:05:28.59\00:05:31.53 you were either some more missionaries 00:05:31.56\00:05:33.03 there were a few business people, 00:05:33.06\00:05:34.90 and then they were, you know, myself with the government 00:05:34.93\00:05:38.93 and there are at least three other Adventists that I know 00:05:38.97\00:05:41.97 in the foreign service at present, maybe four. 00:05:42.00\00:05:46.47 Depending on whether one person I know is retired yet or not. 00:05:46.51\00:05:49.91 But... certainly, and we were always very, 00:05:49.94\00:05:53.88 very warmly welcomed, 00:05:53.92\00:05:55.98 when were in Suriname, we really loved the church, 00:05:56.02\00:05:59.42 we were members out there and they were very welcoming 00:05:59.45\00:06:03.09 included us... 00:06:03.12\00:06:04.56 and although there was one English speaking church 00:06:04.59\00:06:06.63 because it's a Dutch speaking country, 00:06:06.66\00:06:08.93 we chose to go to Dutch speaking church. 00:06:08.96\00:06:13.23 And you know, during the course of time 00:06:13.27\00:06:16.47 our Dutch got better and we could understand 00:06:16.50\00:06:20.18 the sermons and so on, 00:06:20.21\00:06:21.71 but very much appreciated the people. 00:06:21.74\00:06:23.24 'Cause you'd be then in South Africa, 00:06:23.28\00:06:26.28 are you must have picked a little out their 00:06:26.31\00:06:27.88 Africans is not that different, is it? 00:06:27.92\00:06:29.88 Very similar, Africans-- Yeah, it was originally... 00:06:29.92\00:06:32.55 But... was that settlers. Yeah. 00:06:32.59\00:06:35.46 Now, the reason I'm asking the question on... 00:06:35.49\00:06:40.50 that, you know, if it was known. 00:06:40.53\00:06:43.23 We know in principle 00:06:43.26\00:06:45.40 that there are many Seventh Day Adventists 00:06:45.43\00:06:47.14 in the United States in particular 00:06:47.17\00:06:48.50 in government service and positions, 00:06:48.54\00:06:51.34 various positions. 00:06:51.37\00:06:52.71 We, came across them quite regularly, 00:06:52.74\00:06:54.94 but there is no master list 00:06:54.98\00:06:56.58 or any particularly coordinated way 00:06:56.61\00:07:00.35 of connecting with them. 00:07:00.38\00:07:02.25 And then, it'd be nicer if they were 00:07:02.28\00:07:03.89 and just from a familial point of view, 00:07:03.92\00:07:06.32 not that they are church, 00:07:06.35\00:07:09.06 thankfully has never really tried to use people 00:07:09.09\00:07:11.86 to further the aims of the church that could easily 00:07:11.89\00:07:14.13 get into an inappropriate relationship. 00:07:14.16\00:07:17.33 But just as members of a common Christian family 00:07:17.37\00:07:20.14 it's very good to know who they are 00:07:20.17\00:07:21.50 as soon as we have had meeting of some of the staff 00:07:21.54\00:07:25.31 in Washington in sort of an insiders club, 00:07:25.34\00:07:28.48 But, it's not-- it's amazed me how poorly coordinated it is. 00:07:28.51\00:07:33.68 And again we have, Barry Black, Chaplain Barry Black-- 00:07:34.08\00:07:36.35 Yes. 00:07:36.38\00:07:37.72 And chaplain of the U.S. senate, 00:07:37.75\00:07:39.15 he's very high profiled person, 00:07:39.19\00:07:40.66 but there's many, many, many others. 00:07:40.69\00:07:43.09 But, nearly by using the term poorly coordinated 00:07:43.12\00:07:45.69 you imply-- that implies that you think-- 00:07:45.73\00:07:47.73 That was probably the wrong word, 00:07:47.76\00:07:49.36 what I mean is poorly identified, 00:07:49.40\00:07:51.73 we don't really know, 00:07:51.77\00:07:53.10 we're always stumbling on someone in the position 00:07:53.13\00:07:55.07 and oh, it's Seventh Day Adventist 00:07:55.10\00:07:56.44 I mean I suppose you could... 00:07:56.47\00:07:57.81 you could ask people to sort of voluntarily sign up. 00:07:57.84\00:08:02.34 But, but it would raise those questions about well, 00:08:02.38\00:08:05.65 you know, how are you going to use my name? And-- 00:08:05.68\00:08:08.38 And that's probably why it hasn't happened, 00:08:08.42\00:08:10.05 we, we're reticent to-- Sure. 00:08:10.09\00:08:12.69 You know, to use it inappropriately, 00:08:12.72\00:08:15.39 but I think it would be nice if they had known 00:08:15.42\00:08:17.63 rather than just sort of appear at magical moments. 00:08:17.66\00:08:20.96 And I knew a couple of Adventist's chaplains 00:08:21.00\00:08:23.93 who served in the military-- 00:08:23.97\00:08:26.23 Now, they're more well known because they have a-- 00:08:26.27\00:08:28.77 They have a church in pre-mature-- 00:08:28.80\00:08:30.67 System, we have someone in charge of the Chaplaincy 00:08:30.71\00:08:33.38 the power of them. 00:08:33.41\00:08:35.58 And some military, one guy I knew 00:08:35.61\00:08:39.88 who was an Adventist, who worked for NASA. 00:08:39.91\00:08:43.55 So I mean you do come across somebody in homeland security, 00:08:43.59\00:08:47.26 and you come across some. 00:08:47.29\00:08:48.76 And as Barry Black says very publicly, 00:08:48.79\00:08:51.16 he sees himself as a Daniel in a court there. 00:08:51.19\00:08:54.56 And I think in there are-- why of these people are there, 00:08:54.60\00:08:58.73 it's a privilege for them to represent not just a country 00:08:58.77\00:09:02.04 but their faith comes with them, 00:09:02.07\00:09:03.94 you know, this-- it's a misunderstanding 00:09:03.97\00:09:06.78 in the separation in the church and state argument 00:09:06.81\00:09:08.91 in the United States that a person of faith 00:09:08.94\00:09:10.95 leaves their faith behind. 00:09:10.98\00:09:12.31 Oh! Right. 00:09:12.35\00:09:13.68 That absolutely should, 00:09:13.72\00:09:15.05 should help describe their character, 00:09:15.08\00:09:17.12 I mean, it's a centralism. 00:09:17.15\00:09:19.09 There's a huge difference between that 00:09:19.12\00:09:20.62 and trying to use their position of authority 00:09:20.66\00:09:23.83 to, you know, to funnel their faith 00:09:23.86\00:09:26.33 were used to other people or into lowers and so on. 00:09:26.36\00:09:29.36 But it can't be separated from the person. 00:09:29.40\00:09:32.13 No, no more than you would expect 00:09:32.17\00:09:34.57 someone who is of one ethnic background 00:09:34.60\00:09:37.41 to somehow pretend that they're not. 00:09:37.44\00:09:39.47 Yeah? Which has happened lately. 00:09:39.51\00:09:42.04 Well. I don't know. 00:09:42.08\00:09:43.78 That news out there was a woman 00:09:43.81\00:09:45.75 that was leading out of the end of the NAACP. 00:09:45.78\00:09:48.75 Who wished she were Evi Manardi but same as that she wasn't 00:09:48.78\00:09:53.99 but she did a good job, there in her defense. 00:09:54.02\00:09:56.73 But you're right, I mean, you're what you are 00:09:56.76\00:09:59.26 and you can't... 00:09:59.29\00:10:02.03 you shouldn't move away from that. 00:10:02.06\00:10:03.47 You just need to make sure that you're priority however 00:10:03.50\00:10:06.37 is... if you're working for the government 00:10:06.40\00:10:09.90 and representing the United States, 00:10:09.94\00:10:13.21 then you have to make that a priority. 00:10:13.24\00:10:16.11 But at the same time, yeah, it was very visible who I was 00:10:16.14\00:10:21.18 and of course in Suriname it's a fairly small country 00:10:21.22\00:10:24.59 in terms of the population and I... 00:10:24.62\00:10:30.56 sometimes my security officer would be concerned about me 00:10:30.59\00:10:33.73 because on the weekends I drove myself 00:10:33.76\00:10:38.33 I was entitled to a driver at all times 00:10:38.37\00:10:40.64 but I was reluctant to drag this poor guy in 00:10:40.67\00:10:44.34 and then to have him, drive us to church and then sit outside 00:10:44.37\00:10:48.34 because he would have sat outside 00:10:48.38\00:10:50.98 even if we'd invited him in 00:10:51.01\00:10:52.35 and he would had to have been working 00:10:52.38\00:10:54.62 and he just didn't seem, I prefer the independence 00:10:54.65\00:10:58.32 to being able to drive myself and in some countries 00:10:58.35\00:11:01.12 that would not have been possible 00:11:01.16\00:11:02.59 in Suriname it was, although like I said 00:11:02.62\00:11:05.49 my security officer was a little concerned at times. 00:11:05.53\00:11:08.20 You're getting close to a what to this day 00:11:08.23\00:11:12.63 many Americans don't understand about Australia. 00:11:12.67\00:11:15.37 I don't know if you remember, years ago 00:11:15.40\00:11:16.74 an Australian PrimeMinister was lost swimming. 00:11:16.77\00:11:19.94 Drowning. Yeah. 00:11:19.97\00:11:21.31 And people can't figure how come he was alone 00:11:21.34\00:11:23.21 well, he didn't have any guard at that time 00:11:23.24\00:11:25.98 he just that was seen no need. 00:11:26.01\00:11:28.12 Well, I remembered that one time 00:11:28.15\00:11:29.48 I went to the supermarket on the Sunday evening, 00:11:29.52\00:11:32.65 wearing a t-shirt, shorts and I had a baseball cap on 00:11:32.69\00:11:35.82 and I was buying ice-cream... 00:11:35.86\00:11:38.03 And I, you know, paid for it in the counter 00:11:38.06\00:11:41.53 and the bag boy, put it in the bag, 00:11:41.56\00:11:44.80 handed it to me and said 00:11:44.83\00:11:46.17 "Have a good evening Mr. Ambassador." 00:11:46.20\00:11:48.37 And I thought I was blown 00:11:48.40\00:11:50.54 you know, it goes to show how visible one was and-- 00:11:50.57\00:11:55.84 But that actually was good for job. 00:11:55.88\00:11:57.35 That meant you were really doing, in my view 00:11:57.38\00:11:59.35 that was an affirmation not that a potential threat. 00:11:59.38\00:12:02.28 Oh, it wasn't granting, but it was definitely 00:12:02.32\00:12:06.32 a case of being visible and recognizing 00:12:06.35\00:12:10.06 that you are actually being pretty public 00:12:10.09\00:12:11.96 which was a good thing but it also makes you 00:12:11.99\00:12:14.53 very conscious of the importance 00:12:14.56\00:12:16.87 of being a good representative. 00:12:16.90\00:12:18.83 Right, I was about to lead it in that. 00:12:18.87\00:12:20.20 If you are-- 00:12:20.24\00:12:21.57 And as we can even relate to being a Christian. 00:12:21.60\00:12:23.67 Absolutely. 00:12:23.71\00:12:25.04 Eventually, it's known one way or the other 00:12:25.07\00:12:26.41 especially those of which working in religious liberty. 00:12:26.44\00:12:29.64 I sometimes think we don't announce 00:12:29.68\00:12:31.61 our connection often enough but the word gets around 00:12:31.65\00:12:34.32 and then they're looking at you. 00:12:34.35\00:12:36.18 I can remember years ago 00:12:36.22\00:12:38.62 there was an unfortunate incident 00:12:38.65\00:12:39.99 where an Adventist college was hoping to get some 00:12:40.02\00:12:43.39 government grant money and to get it 00:12:43.43\00:12:45.23 they challenged the churches, 00:12:45.26\00:12:47.60 the states' view on separation of the churches 00:12:47.63\00:12:49.30 that would turn the world on its head. 00:12:49.33\00:12:51.23 I got many, many calls from other religious liberty 00:12:51.27\00:12:54.44 and other church groups 00:12:54.47\00:12:55.84 you know, "What is that with you Adventist? 00:12:55.87\00:12:57.21 This is, your position, your head,' you know, 'explain it.'" 00:12:57.24\00:12:59.14 So they've been watching. 00:12:59.17\00:13:00.51 They knew our position and actually we're ready 00:13:00.54\00:13:03.04 to pull us back on to our course. 00:13:03.08\00:13:06.18 So we're stand for something, or once you stand for something 00:13:06.21\00:13:10.72 you need to be consistent with it 00:13:10.75\00:13:12.45 'cause people are watching. 00:13:12.49\00:13:14.02 And you clearly were, 00:13:14.06\00:13:16.02 I think representing your country in the best way 00:13:16.06\00:13:18.83 they about being with the people and then formal, 00:13:18.86\00:13:21.50 I don't think it's a good to witnessed 00:13:21.53\00:13:22.93 to be cruising around in the limousine. 00:13:22.96\00:13:26.30 Which might be necessary for security in some places. 00:13:26.33\00:13:29.00 Certainly in some places. 00:13:29.04\00:13:30.61 Well, I can see we're at the break point 00:13:30.64\00:13:32.47 so, stay with us we'll be back 00:13:32.51\00:13:33.88 for this very interesting discussion 00:13:33.91\00:13:35.78 with the Ambassador. 00:13:35.81\00:13:38.25
