Welcome back, before the break, with Ambassador John Nay, 00:00:05.97\00:00:09.00 we were talking about moral power. 00:00:09.04\00:00:11.74 Self power and how the U.S. can project that 00:00:11.77\00:00:16.01 but how the principle of religious liberty 00:00:16.04\00:00:18.68 can be communicated internationally 00:00:18.71\00:00:21.92 and I think the United States 00:00:21.95\00:00:23.55 or its different invoice ambassadors and so on. 00:00:23.59\00:00:26.05 I think it's done certainly an admirable job, 00:00:26.09\00:00:28.32 not a perfect job 00:00:28.36\00:00:29.69 but an admirable job with doing that. 00:00:29.72\00:00:31.06 More than most of the countries. 00:00:31.09\00:00:32.76 Ah, we're not prefect, we are human 00:00:32.79\00:00:34.93 and so certainly we make mistakes 00:00:34.96\00:00:37.23 but it was an issue and outreached 00:00:37.27\00:00:39.87 to other religious communities was an issue 00:00:39.90\00:00:41.94 that I certainly was happy to engage in. 00:00:41.97\00:00:46.21 In Toronto when I was there, I was active 00:00:46.24\00:00:49.48 in reaching out to the Muslim community. 00:00:49.51\00:00:52.05 In Suriname, where there is a significant Muslim community 00:00:52.08\00:00:55.92 and the Hindu community and so on. 00:00:55.95\00:00:58.89 I found it a real privilege to have meetings with them 00:00:58.92\00:01:02.82 to visit their places of worship, 00:01:02.86\00:01:05.26 talk to them, learn more about them. 00:01:05.29\00:01:07.93 Uh, at the end of Ramadan, 00:01:07.96\00:01:09.83 going to the mosque with Muslims 00:01:09.86\00:01:13.90 to two or three different mosques. 00:01:13.94\00:01:16.84 Did you find Muslims, individual Muslims 00:01:16.87\00:01:20.41 in your different postings, did you find them anymore 00:01:20.44\00:01:23.98 informed about their faith than the average Christian is? 00:01:24.01\00:01:28.75 Well, of course... I that on a non-confrontational way. 00:01:28.78\00:01:30.12 Yeah, I was gonna say, how does that implies 00:01:30.15\00:01:32.29 that the average Christian is 00:01:32.32\00:01:34.42 or is not knowledgeable about Christianity? 00:01:34.46\00:01:36.46 It's a loaded question that want you have picked up 00:01:36.49\00:01:38.19 at it instantly but-- I think that, uh..-- 00:01:38.23\00:01:41.33 I don't think that the average Christian anymore in the west 00:01:41.36\00:01:43.43 is very informed, uh on basic talk shows 00:01:43.47\00:01:46.03 I see the questions, you know, 00:01:46.07\00:01:47.40 who was that swallowed by a whale? 00:01:47.44\00:01:48.97 You know, this sort of question, uh-- 00:01:49.00\00:01:50.64 Yeah, but they, they may not really be 00:01:50.67\00:01:52.94 active Christians, so-- 00:01:52.97\00:01:54.31 Well, but I... There are active Christians 00:01:54.34\00:01:56.61 but our culture is becoming not very knowledgeable 00:01:56.64\00:02:01.68 on the basics of the faith that we, 00:02:01.72\00:02:04.25 as the Muslims will says 00:02:04.29\00:02:05.62 that "this is the Christian west." 00:02:05.65\00:02:06.99 Mm, mm. 00:02:07.02\00:02:08.36 But, perhaps that's just nominal 00:02:08.39\00:02:09.72 and not born out of any practice. 00:02:09.76\00:02:11.09 So my question is, did you find that 00:02:11.13\00:02:13.36 that's the same as we really... 00:02:13.40\00:02:14.73 I think with most Muslims that I knew, 00:02:14.76\00:02:18.47 they really are focused on the five basic rulers, 00:02:18.50\00:02:24.57 the pillars. 00:02:24.61\00:02:25.94 Do I have the number wrong? That's what I'm thinking. 00:02:25.97\00:02:27.31 But, you know, Mohammed was the last... 00:02:27.34\00:02:28.68 I'm scared of getting a mixed up with the uh-- 00:02:28.71\00:02:31.21 Six? No, Lawrence of Arabia's books. 00:02:31.25\00:02:34.42 Isn't that the five pillars of wisdom? 00:02:34.45\00:02:36.12 I-- okay but... He caught a-- 00:02:36.15\00:02:39.02 Uh, anyway you know, Mohammed is the last prophet, 00:02:39.05\00:02:42.09 prayed five times a day, avoid pork and alcohol 00:02:42.12\00:02:46.96 and so on and that's really their focus was 00:02:47.00\00:02:52.77 live according to what Allah wanted or wants 00:02:52.80\00:02:56.94 and you know, follows the rules 00:02:56.97\00:03:01.41 and be respectful of God. 00:03:01.44\00:03:04.71 So I wouldn't say 00:03:04.75\00:03:06.45 that we talked deep theological issues, 00:03:06.48\00:03:09.82 what we were talking about really was 00:03:09.85\00:03:12.32 people in human relationships and in that respect, 00:03:12.35\00:03:16.99 I found that whether I was speaking with Turks 00:03:17.03\00:03:21.03 in Toronto where we had friends 00:03:21.06\00:03:23.57 with people from South-Asia, South-Asian background, 00:03:23.60\00:03:29.00 people from the Middle-East, Syrians and so on. 00:03:29.04\00:03:32.14 That I was speaking with other people 00:03:32.17\00:03:35.54 who had as I said in another program 00:03:35.58\00:03:38.71 the same family aspirations, 00:03:38.75\00:03:40.55 the same love for their children, 00:03:40.58\00:03:42.28 the same desire 00:03:42.32\00:03:43.79 for a good relationship with God. 00:03:43.82\00:03:45.79 And that, that's worth remembering 00:03:45.82\00:03:47.16 because, human beings 00:03:47.19\00:03:48.59 regardless of what they profess spiritually 00:03:48.62\00:03:50.76 or even if nothing, we cut from the same flesh. 00:03:50.79\00:03:54.86 And God made us all of us of a muchness 00:03:54.90\00:03:57.73 and it's only when something's really aberrant 00:03:57.77\00:04:01.47 in someone's life experience 00:04:01.50\00:04:02.84 that they deviate from that, so yeah. 00:04:02.87\00:04:05.64 I could imagine that you'd find that 00:04:05.67\00:04:07.14 but I just wanted to get your take on that 00:04:07.18\00:04:10.55 but we do need to. 00:04:10.58\00:04:12.21 I mean, that religious liberty 00:04:12.25\00:04:14.38 and may be I haven't discussed that much on this program, 00:04:14.42\00:04:16.62 our church, the Seventh Day Adventist church... 00:04:16.65\00:04:19.02 You're a member too, 00:04:19.05\00:04:20.46 as I think had a very good track record 00:04:20.49\00:04:22.49 on promoting religious liberty 00:04:22.52\00:04:23.86 But there's really two aspects on them, 00:04:23.89\00:04:25.93 was actually more than two, but as our own department is, 00:04:25.96\00:04:30.03 it's the department of public affairs, 00:04:30.07\00:04:35.64 I was really going to say to the wrong order. 00:04:35.67\00:04:37.41 Public affairs and religious liberty. 00:04:37.44\00:04:39.11 Yes. 00:04:39.14\00:04:40.48 Religious liberty is arguing for the rights 00:04:40.51\00:04:43.81 and freedom of all people to believe and practice 00:04:43.85\00:04:46.88 or disbelieve anything they want. 00:04:46.92\00:04:49.22 I mean, it's the total liberal concept, 00:04:49.25\00:04:51.69 in the best sense. 00:04:51.72\00:04:53.82 Uh, but public affairs, 00:04:53.86\00:04:56.89 is closely allied I think to mission. 00:04:56.93\00:05:00.36 It's projecting our particular identity 00:05:00.40\00:05:05.03 and our mission to other people. 00:05:05.07\00:05:07.40 And seeking to explain it. 00:05:07.44\00:05:08.77 Yeah, often it's very protocol oriented 00:05:08.80\00:05:10.74 but it goes beyond that. 00:05:10.77\00:05:12.11 You know, protocol just dignitary 00:05:12.14\00:05:13.88 dealing with dignitaries and so 00:05:13.91\00:05:15.24 but I think public affairs really covers 00:05:15.28\00:05:17.65 all of our evangelization on our viewpoint 00:05:17.68\00:05:21.35 because at the end of the day, 00:05:21.38\00:05:23.42 you know, Adventist believe 00:05:23.45\00:05:24.79 we have a special charter, don't we? 00:05:24.82\00:05:26.62 For these times 00:05:26.65\00:05:29.56 but you know, we have to follow through on that 00:05:29.59\00:05:32.03 and that we recognize Muslims or any ones. 00:05:32.06\00:05:34.60 They have their agenda, it's not improper 00:05:34.63\00:05:37.93 but it's not our agenda, so ours needs to be promoted. 00:05:37.97\00:05:41.14 Well, and that's what the Adventist church does 00:05:41.17\00:05:43.81 and active outreaching Adventist 00:05:43.84\00:05:49.11 but I absolutely agree and I also think 00:05:49.14\00:05:51.11 the Adventist church has done an excellent job 00:05:51.15\00:05:53.45 of promoting religious liberty, 00:05:53.48\00:05:55.75 now and that it is not just a self serving agenda. 00:05:55.78\00:06:00.36 No! 00:06:00.39\00:06:01.72 Because as a small, smaller church, 00:06:01.76\00:06:05.06 especially originally at the beginnings, 00:06:05.09\00:06:08.06 there was a real concern about being-- 00:06:08.10\00:06:11.00 There was a concern about but as I read the history 00:06:11.03\00:06:12.67 and you're an historian too, maybe more than me, 00:06:12.70\00:06:16.84 I will give you the credit. 00:06:16.87\00:06:18.21 But it seems to me, 00:06:18.24\00:06:19.74 while there was this low level persecution 00:06:19.77\00:06:23.04 in the United States 00:06:23.08\00:06:24.41 that the real origin of religious liberty concern 00:06:24.45\00:06:29.28 was more tied up to prophecy and then the expectation 00:06:29.32\00:06:31.79 of what would happen as we moved into the end times. 00:06:31.82\00:06:34.59 So it's always been tied up to, you know the larger context, 00:06:34.62\00:06:38.96 not immediately solving our problem. 00:06:38.99\00:06:40.90 In fact, even to this day, the some of our members 00:06:41.43\00:06:44.60 that I think have a similar view than back then 00:06:44.63\00:06:47.30 whether this was sort of a necessary conflict 00:06:47.34\00:06:50.51 and you grin and bear it and thank the lord. 00:06:50.54\00:06:53.78 So our proclamation of religious liberty 00:06:53.81\00:06:56.18 is more tied up to proclaiming a great truth 00:06:56.21\00:07:00.32 as creatures of a Creator God that we all have the dignity 00:07:00.35\00:07:04.35 and the rights to chose our way, to chose God, 00:07:04.39\00:07:07.96 or chose whatever. You know. 00:07:07.99\00:07:09.82 And that's what I was also agreeing with-- 00:07:09.86\00:07:12.13 It wasn't just so that Adventist 00:07:12.29\00:07:14.70 could avoid getting fired 00:07:14.73\00:07:16.73 for not wanting to work on Sabbath or something. 00:07:16.77\00:07:18.90 Now that's a very important function of that church-- 00:07:18.93\00:07:21.07 But I don't see that and I must admit that 00:07:21.10\00:07:22.54 I'm set sound as a variance 00:07:22.57\00:07:24.34 with other religions liberty people on that, 00:07:24.37\00:07:26.81 not that I differ but my focus, 00:07:26.84\00:07:29.08 I don't see that as the main thing we do 00:07:29.11\00:07:31.31 or the most important thing. 00:07:31.35\00:07:33.01 Day to day it might be a very practical thing 00:07:33.05\00:07:36.38 but we would be negligent 00:07:36.42\00:07:38.59 if we didn't pay attention to it 00:07:38.62\00:07:39.99 but it's not our main religious liberty message. 00:07:40.02\00:07:43.69 But we do want to help all, 00:07:43.73\00:07:45.56 including our own members who have difficulties 00:07:45.59\00:07:48.10 but you know you've lived in some countries. 00:07:48.13\00:07:51.60 Even some nominally free ones. 00:07:51.63\00:07:55.00 Singapore, which is a great country 00:07:55.04\00:07:56.84 but there was at least under previous administration, 00:07:56.87\00:08:00.48 it was pretty inflexible on certain things 00:08:00.51\00:08:02.54 I have imagined you could easily get fined 00:08:02.58\00:08:05.28 there for certain Christian activity. 00:08:05.31\00:08:08.05 Well, proselytisation is allowed 00:08:08.08\00:08:12.75 but they also are very aware 00:08:12.79\00:08:16.39 of the importance of civil order 00:08:16.42\00:08:18.89 and they are very aware of past times when they were 00:08:18.93\00:08:22.56 what they've called 'communal riots' 00:08:22.60\00:08:25.50 including when they were part of Malaysia 00:08:25.53\00:08:28.40 and then since they got independence. 00:08:28.44\00:08:31.24 They're very aware that Malaysia and Indonesia 00:08:31.27\00:08:33.54 on either side of them are far-far larger 00:08:33.58\00:08:37.45 and that their population, Muslim population in Singapore 00:08:37.48\00:08:42.12 is 15-20%. 00:08:42.15\00:08:44.42 So although proselytisation is allowed, 00:08:44.45\00:08:46.96 they want you to do it in a very careful way-- 00:08:46.99\00:08:49.62 That's right, so you could easily-- 00:08:49.66\00:08:51.99 And you might not tread on-- some of the regulations there, 00:08:52.03\00:08:54.40 even though it's not a repressive state 00:08:54.43\00:08:56.20 and in any classic sense... 00:08:56.23\00:08:57.70 But you may not get your visa renewed 00:08:57.73\00:08:59.63 if you upset the social order. 00:08:59.67\00:09:02.20 Yeah, Yeah. 00:09:02.24\00:09:03.57 But that the way obvious that it is Singapore 00:09:03.61\00:09:05.31 many times that I love it. 00:09:05.34\00:09:07.64 It's amazing to me, 00:09:07.68\00:09:09.31 you'd probably know the statistics 00:09:09.34\00:09:10.71 but you know, the population density, very high. 00:09:10.75\00:09:12.81 For that little island nation state. 00:09:13.42\00:09:16.02 But yet you could go out of the city 00:09:16.05\00:09:18.12 and you are like in the open country. 00:09:18.15\00:09:19.85 Like the zoo... Yes. 00:09:19.89\00:09:21.22 For example, it's like the middle of, 00:09:21.26\00:09:23.63 like it could be anywhere but like Borneo jungles. 00:09:23.66\00:09:27.36 Well, our daughter was born there 00:09:27.40\00:09:28.76 and then when we went back some years later 00:09:28.80\00:09:31.27 we were happy to take her to the zoo 00:09:31.30\00:09:32.83 and have a chance to actually 00:09:32.87\00:09:35.00 have a breakfast with the orangutan with a-- 00:09:35.04\00:09:37.47 And this is an ad for the zoo almost 00:09:37.51\00:09:40.44 because I've been to a lot of zoos 00:09:40.48\00:09:42.01 but that one is quite unique 00:09:42.04\00:09:43.38 because there's no real sense of fences. 00:09:43.41\00:09:46.05 Remember, there's a ditch in front of the animal 00:09:46.08\00:09:48.65 but you look them in the eye often. 00:09:48.68\00:09:50.85 Yeah, they were very nice. 00:09:50.89\00:09:52.22 Beautiful zoo but yeah, 00:09:52.25\00:09:56.99 as we were agreeing you know it's interesting 00:09:57.03\00:09:59.26 sociological and cultural challenge is to projecting, 00:09:59.29\00:10:03.16 not just Adventist beliefs 00:10:03.20\00:10:04.53 but religious liberty in general 00:10:04.57\00:10:06.94 and yet it must be done. 00:10:06.97\00:10:08.30 It is being done, 00:10:08.34\00:10:09.67 the United States is doing a good job of it 00:10:09.70\00:10:11.27 and our church is trying consistently 00:10:11.31\00:10:15.88 and we congratulate ourselves a lot, 00:10:15.91\00:10:17.55 we are not as often as well known as we could be 00:10:17.58\00:10:20.25 but I think like the United States, 00:10:20.28\00:10:22.18 the Seventh Day Adventist church has a long track record 00:10:22.22\00:10:25.29 and it's generally, it's in the right direction. 00:10:25.32\00:10:28.52 I agree, I think that we are doing a good work, 00:10:28.56\00:10:32.39 we are working with other churches 00:10:32.43\00:10:34.33 and we are doing it in a way that is advancing 00:10:34.36\00:10:38.47 the cause of religious liberty and I think that as we do that 00:10:38.50\00:10:42.60 we are uh, contributing to a cause 00:10:42.64\00:10:46.51 greater than ourselves 00:10:46.54\00:10:48.54 and it's an issue that will continue 00:10:48.58\00:10:51.45 and that as we continue to work through issues 00:10:51.48\00:10:54.88 in our society I'm sure, we'll stay active. 00:10:54.92\00:11:00.02 When I was quite a bit younger, 00:11:00.06\00:11:01.86 I remember staying up late to watch on television, 00:11:01.89\00:11:05.26 the fuzzy black and white image of the lunar landing. 00:11:05.29\00:11:09.06 The U.S. exercising its... 00:11:09.10\00:11:12.30 very obvious technological prowess 00:11:12.33\00:11:14.97 and quite power and putting a man on the moon 00:11:15.00\00:11:20.28 but in reality the power of the United States 00:11:20.31\00:11:23.31 is not primarily technological, certainly not military power, 00:11:23.35\00:11:28.42 even thought that is unquestioned 00:11:28.45\00:11:31.05 in the modern world. 00:11:31.09\00:11:32.42 The real power of any country 00:11:32.45\00:11:34.62 and I think the real power of the United States 00:11:34.66\00:11:36.76 is its moral persuasion 00:11:36.79\00:11:39.26 and it is a rather unique thing that in the modern world, 00:11:39.29\00:11:42.76 the United States acting on its constitutional principles 00:11:42.80\00:11:46.33 and in particular the principle of religious liberty 00:11:46.37\00:11:49.14 has been able to, often very effectively project 00:11:49.17\00:11:53.38 that to a world that at times is ready to kill and restrict 00:11:53.41\00:11:59.61 in the name of their own principles 00:11:59.65\00:12:02.75 but not religious liberty. 00:12:02.78\00:12:04.55 Moral Power, it's important for countries, 00:12:04.59\00:12:08.82 it's vital for individual human beings, 00:12:08.86\00:12:11.83 for individual Christians as the witness for their Lord. 00:12:11.86\00:12:16.26 For Liberty Insider 00:12:16.30\00:12:17.63 this is Lincoln Steed. 00:12:17.67\00:12:19.50
