Welcome back to 'The Liberty Insider,' 00:00:06.17\00:00:07.84 before the break with guest Ambassador John Nay, 00:00:07.87\00:00:11.74 we've gone through a little bit of your career 00:00:11.77\00:00:13.84 and philosophy as an ambassador 00:00:13.88\00:00:15.74 and we'd ended up on the environment 00:00:15.78\00:00:17.45 which while there were threats there, 00:00:17.48\00:00:19.88 it was actually very pleasant in Suriname. 00:00:19.91\00:00:24.29 But you said that you made that somewhat of a focus 00:00:24.32\00:00:28.22 or a theme of your tenure there. 00:00:28.26\00:00:31.06 I did. 00:00:31.09\00:00:32.86 You know, ambassadors are able to chose the art 00:00:32.89\00:00:36.56 that goes on the walls in the ambassadorial residence 00:00:36.60\00:00:39.37 and in the public areas 00:00:39.40\00:00:40.87 where you'll be having receptions. 00:00:40.90\00:00:42.87 And so for example, my academy art teacher 00:00:42.90\00:00:47.61 who's now have been teaching art 00:00:47.64\00:00:49.61 at Union College James McClelland. 00:00:49.64\00:00:52.05 We were lucky enough to have 00:00:52.08\00:00:54.48 and he was kind enough 00:00:54.52\00:00:55.98 to loan us two of his paintings. 00:00:56.02\00:00:58.12 We had those on the walls 00:00:58.15\00:01:00.19 and we had others by one of the art teachers 00:01:00.22\00:01:04.79 at Andrews University and a number of others. 00:01:04.83\00:01:08.66 And again, they would often 00:01:08.70\00:01:10.27 would wind up being something of a focus of conversation 00:01:10.30\00:01:13.30 when we were having receptions. 00:01:13.34\00:01:14.94 Now you were telling me what I always understood 00:01:14.97\00:01:17.51 that an ambassador's residence in many ways 00:01:17.54\00:01:22.31 is sort of a little island 00:01:22.34\00:01:25.15 in another place of his own country, 00:01:25.18\00:01:26.95 right, to represent them? 00:01:26.98\00:01:28.32 In a sense, yeah. It would be. 00:01:28.35\00:01:30.29 But I can remember years ago going to an ambassador 00:01:30.32\00:01:35.66 to the Vatican residence. 00:01:35.69\00:01:39.39 And I was startled. 00:01:39.43\00:01:40.96 Everything in the house was to do with the Vatican City. 00:01:41.00\00:01:46.43 I don't think it was forbidden but it was interesting. 00:01:46.47\00:01:50.31 That it turned the things on their side 00:01:50.34\00:01:52.34 because a few others that I've gone to. 00:01:52.37\00:01:54.71 Yeah, they are little island in this case of America. 00:01:54.74\00:01:58.98 I was trying to highlight Michigan artists, 00:01:59.01\00:02:01.38 from Michigan and yeah, very much so. 00:02:01.42\00:02:05.15 I definitely saw myself as a representative 00:02:05.19\00:02:08.92 of the United States and was trying to do 00:02:08.96\00:02:11.76 what I could to represent the U.S. well. 00:02:11.79\00:02:14.46 Yeah, now I'm sure very responsible relationship. 00:02:14.50\00:02:18.70 And I'm sure very rewarding too. 00:02:18.73\00:02:20.94 I'm originally an Australian 00:02:20.97\00:02:22.77 and in a little, little way I understand that 00:02:22.80\00:02:25.87 and in fact, I tried to relate 00:02:25.91\00:02:27.31 that to the Christians role in the world. 00:02:27.34\00:02:30.58 You know, as an Australian, no matter how long 00:02:30.61\00:02:32.48 I stay my accent betrays me 00:02:32.51\00:02:34.18 and people make judgments on my country 00:02:34.22\00:02:36.55 no matter how I behave 00:02:36.58\00:02:37.92 and what I tell them about the country. 00:02:37.95\00:02:39.29 So I'm sort of projecting 00:02:39.32\00:02:41.82 that as Christians our home is heaven 00:02:41.86\00:02:44.69 but that doesn't let us off the hook. 00:02:44.73\00:02:46.76 We have to really let people around us know 00:02:46.80\00:02:51.30 what the citizen of heaven is like 00:02:51.33\00:02:53.44 and how good a citizen of any country that'd be. 00:02:53.47\00:02:56.60 Yeah, well, I mean, the term ambassador 00:02:56.64\00:02:58.51 is actually used in the Bible. 00:02:58.54\00:03:00.58 Yeah, I had forgotten that. Yes. 00:03:00.61\00:03:02.81 You know, when my father died about eight years ago, 00:03:02.84\00:03:06.68 after a very short illness and he actually died 00:03:06.72\00:03:09.52 after final surgery. 00:03:09.55\00:03:11.05 As they wheeled him away to the surgery 00:03:11.09\00:03:12.75 they not even been told a couple of minutes earlier 00:03:12.79\00:03:14.56 that he had to have, we knew this was the end of it. 00:03:14.59\00:03:19.13 But he said to the, he says. 00:03:19.16\00:03:21.63 "Do you know I'm an ambassador? 00:03:21.66\00:03:23.63 He looked at him. 00:03:23.67\00:03:25.00 You know, what he's talking about. 00:03:25.03\00:03:26.37 He says, "I am an ambassador for heaven." 00:03:26.40\00:03:27.90 Okay. 00:03:27.94\00:03:29.27 So that they brought him to me 00:03:29.30\00:03:31.24 that this relationship as a Christian 00:03:31.27\00:03:33.38 and how we represent another world. 00:03:33.41\00:03:36.85 But yeah, they said the environment 00:03:36.88\00:03:39.28 you really saw as an issue. 00:03:39.31\00:03:45.29 Well, when you presenting America it's just a sign that 00:03:45.32\00:03:48.72 this is a responsible nation on the environment. 00:03:48.76\00:03:50.76 It's a common concern of all human kind. 00:03:50.79\00:03:53.19 Exactly and this is something we care about. 00:03:53.23\00:03:55.96 Something that we hope other countries 00:03:56.00\00:03:57.47 will care about and without overdoing it, 00:03:57.50\00:04:02.97 without getting into a bullying mode or anything. 00:04:03.00\00:04:05.57 But simply please keep these concerns in mind 00:04:05.61\00:04:08.84 because they are part of you preserving the beauty 00:04:08.88\00:04:12.98 and resources of your own country. 00:04:13.01\00:04:17.65 So-- 00:04:17.69\00:04:19.12 Do you see well, in a way I know the answer to it, 00:04:19.15\00:04:25.19 on the environment there is potential 00:04:25.23\00:04:27.30 for disagreement among nations obviously? 00:04:27.33\00:04:29.73 Of course. 00:04:29.76\00:04:31.33 And so how do you think both as citizens 00:04:31.37\00:04:34.87 and in your case you are representative 00:04:34.90\00:04:36.67 of the government of a particular country 00:04:36.71\00:04:39.51 but as citizens and Christians 00:04:39.54\00:04:41.71 how can we influence mankind to take this seriously 00:04:41.74\00:04:44.25 because I do see it as a matter of stewardship 00:04:44.28\00:04:47.78 of creatures of a Creator God. 00:04:47.82\00:04:49.38 He made this for us as not just a matter of, 00:04:49.42\00:04:53.62 you know, making life better for us here. 00:04:53.66\00:04:55.42 It's got a moral component. 00:04:55.46\00:04:56.89 We owe it to the Creator to minimize pollution 00:04:56.93\00:05:03.06 and some of it comes with just living. 00:05:03.10\00:05:05.23 I would say we owe it to our fellowmen also. 00:05:05.27\00:05:07.74 Right. 00:05:07.77\00:05:09.40 Well, as far as how do you influence, 00:05:09.44\00:05:10.87 I mean, by example is probably the best way 00:05:10.91\00:05:14.98 and of course our example hasn't always been good. 00:05:15.01\00:05:18.28 When we speak to some countries like Brazil and Suriname, 00:05:18.31\00:05:22.85 we can make our best case and they always listened 00:05:22.88\00:05:26.76 I always felt like the Suriname officials listened. 00:05:26.79\00:05:30.53 On the other hand, Brazil 00:05:30.56\00:05:33.16 and some of the other countries will point out that 00:05:33.19\00:05:35.66 our own history isn't exactly perfect on these issues. 00:05:35.70\00:05:39.73 We had forests that covered America 00:05:39.77\00:05:42.30 and they mostly, mostly got cut down. 00:05:42.34\00:05:45.74 It's always been an amazement to me, 00:05:45.77\00:05:47.31 how quickly that was done. 00:05:47.34\00:05:48.68 Yes. 00:05:48.71\00:05:50.05 And even in Australia which is as big as the U.S. 00:05:50.08\00:05:51.41 with only 25 million people today. 00:05:51.45\00:05:53.25 This is just huge, of countryside 00:05:53.28\00:05:56.15 that has been transformed. 00:05:56.18\00:05:57.52 That must've been done within a generation. 00:05:57.55\00:05:59.42 Within a few generations anyway 00:05:59.45\00:06:01.89 and so we have to be a little bit mindful 00:06:01.92\00:06:04.69 that we can make our best case 00:06:04.73\00:06:07.16 and other countries may well, say, 00:06:07.20\00:06:09.80 "But we want to develop 00:06:09.83\00:06:12.03 and make life better for our people." 00:06:12.07\00:06:15.64 So they aren't always going to agree 00:06:15.67\00:06:17.77 and at some point we have to respect their choice. 00:06:17.81\00:06:21.84 And I'm sure that the, not the ambassadors 00:06:21.88\00:06:24.61 but the U.S. Military are thinking about this too 00:06:24.65\00:06:27.52 and I read many articles where they realized 00:06:27.55\00:06:29.62 that famines and other natural calamities 00:06:29.65\00:06:33.02 have military implications for conflict 00:06:33.05\00:06:36.89 and I think the environment 00:06:36.93\00:06:38.36 is bringing us to a flash point between different countries 00:06:38.39\00:06:43.37 and aims and the disruptions that are causing so. 00:06:43.40\00:06:46.74 Well, I mean you look-- 00:06:46.77\00:06:48.10 You look how instability within the country. 00:06:48.14\00:06:49.54 Not just against another country. 00:06:49.57\00:06:50.91 Exactly. 00:06:50.94\00:06:52.27 I mean, you can get civil disorder 00:06:52.31\00:06:53.81 when people are starving you can expect that 00:06:53.84\00:06:56.14 they are going to search for a place 00:06:56.18\00:06:58.88 that they can go to that's better. 00:06:58.91\00:07:00.72 You will wind up with refugee flows 00:07:00.75\00:07:02.62 and it has all sorts of implications. 00:07:02.65\00:07:05.65 Now as a Christian, as a Seventh Day Adventist, 00:07:05.69\00:07:07.79 I felt that while the church needs 00:07:07.82\00:07:09.42 to avoid getting into a social gospel 00:07:09.46\00:07:11.99 that substitutes for spirituality 00:07:12.03\00:07:14.50 and in the case of our church 00:07:14.53\00:07:17.30 preparing for the Lord's soon return. 00:07:17.33\00:07:19.63 But I think that we need to embrace 00:07:19.67\00:07:21.60 as an imperative concern for the environment 00:07:21.64\00:07:25.17 just as certain things like the anti-abortion and so on. 00:07:25.21\00:07:28.58 We know why that sort of out of kilter 00:07:28.61\00:07:30.55 perhaps in the U.S. 00:07:30.58\00:07:31.91 But it's still something that should have 00:07:31.95\00:07:33.75 a moral resonance with any follower of the Bible 00:07:33.78\00:07:36.72 and the environment I think, on an individual basis 00:07:36.75\00:07:40.52 or perhaps even as the church entity, 00:07:40.56\00:07:42.32 I think we should speak more strongly 00:07:42.36\00:07:44.13 to this as the Catholic churches done. 00:07:44.16\00:07:46.03 And you know, there're certain things going on there. 00:07:46.06\00:07:48.70 There's a Protestant perhaps not comfortable with. 00:07:48.73\00:07:51.10 But it's not a bad cause to espouse. 00:07:51.13\00:07:53.90 I completely agree. 00:07:53.94\00:07:55.77 I think that, in fact, 00:07:55.80\00:07:57.57 when you used the term social gospel, 00:07:57.61\00:07:59.57 there have been times 00:07:59.61\00:08:00.94 when I've talked to fellow Christians 00:08:00.98\00:08:03.65 and made the case that 00:08:03.68\00:08:06.15 we should be doing more for the poor and every now 00:08:06.18\00:08:11.65 and then unfortunately you'll wind up having 00:08:11.69\00:08:13.72 people be a bit dismissive. 00:08:13.76\00:08:15.42 "Oh, that's the social gospel. We don't do that." 00:08:15.46\00:08:18.49 And you know, it doesn't do much good 00:08:18.53\00:08:23.20 to preach to people if they're hungry. 00:08:23.23\00:08:26.43 And when you look at the kind of good 00:08:26.47\00:08:29.37 that the Salvation Army has done over the years 00:08:29.40\00:08:32.11 and when you go to a Salvation Army 00:08:32.14\00:08:35.31 soup kitchen and volunteer 00:08:35.34\00:08:37.25 and see the people who are getting help there, 00:08:37.28\00:08:40.92 I think it's something where we need 00:08:40.95\00:08:42.28 to keep it very much in mind and that is not to say that 00:08:42.32\00:08:45.79 the Adventist Church doesn't do a lot because it does. 00:08:45.82\00:08:49.86 But I do think it makes me uncomfortable 00:08:49.89\00:08:52.39 when people are dismissive of the term social gospel 00:08:52.43\00:08:54.93 because it sometimes seems like they're making an excuse. 00:08:54.96\00:08:59.67 Yeah, now I think we're in agreement. 00:08:59.70\00:09:02.10 I think it's a matter of balance 00:09:02.14\00:09:05.61 even bit of emphasis. 00:09:05.64\00:09:07.18 That's not why we are here as Christians 00:09:07.21\00:09:10.15 just to fix this world here. 00:09:10.18\00:09:12.95 But as Christians we should be concerned 00:09:12.98\00:09:14.85 to fix whatever we can 00:09:14.88\00:09:16.82 on our way to the heavenly kingdom. 00:09:16.85\00:09:19.25 And I'm certain that the things like 00:09:19.29\00:09:21.76 maybe the environment in particular is going to be 00:09:21.79\00:09:24.16 the central point in the years ahead 00:09:24.19\00:09:27.36 and we can't afford to be 00:09:27.40\00:09:28.73 left out of this discussion or this concern. 00:09:28.76\00:09:30.97 Well, and economically it's got, 00:09:31.00\00:09:33.64 it has huge implications for us too. 00:09:33.67\00:09:36.27 I mean, everything from people's health to-- 00:09:36.30\00:09:41.14 Even survival. 00:09:41.18\00:09:42.51 I can remember as a young kid being 00:09:42.54\00:09:47.08 amazed to read that in Japan at that point 00:09:47.12\00:09:49.48 'cause it was rapidly industrialized. 00:09:49.52\00:09:51.42 People can buy a sniff of oxygen on street machine, 00:09:51.45\00:09:54.72 wending machines. 00:09:54.76\00:09:56.09 That's moved to china now. Yes. 00:09:56.12\00:09:58.93 It so immediately hazardous 00:09:58.96\00:10:01.36 to people's lives in these bigger cities 00:10:01.40\00:10:03.06 that they have to have a little uptake 00:10:03.10\00:10:05.33 of real oxygen just to make it through. 00:10:05.37\00:10:07.80 So we're on the edge. 00:10:07.84\00:10:09.17 The environment is just slowly destroying 00:10:09.20\00:10:11.07 what we have. 00:10:11.11\00:10:12.44 It's imminent threat to life in them. 00:10:12.47\00:10:14.48 In some places it certainly is. 00:10:14.51\00:10:15.84 And back to the Seventh-Day Adventist system 00:10:15.88\00:10:19.71 of reaching out to other people unless there's a clear mind 00:10:19.75\00:10:23.52 people can't understand spiritual things. 00:10:23.55\00:10:25.92 I agree. 00:10:25.95\00:10:27.29 So, yeah, I think your environmental 00:10:27.32\00:10:30.99 concern was well placed. 00:10:31.03\00:10:34.23 As both as a representative of the country 00:10:34.26\00:10:36.63 and as a Seventh-Day Adventist Christian. 00:10:36.67\00:10:38.67 Okay. 00:10:38.70\00:10:40.30 So what was your take away though for Suriname 00:10:40.34\00:10:42.37 and the environment and what you are putting 00:10:42.40\00:10:45.17 into this as a responsible steward? 00:10:45.21\00:10:49.94 Well, it was a great opportunity, 00:10:49.98\00:10:52.71 it was a great job and it was a wonderful chance 00:10:52.75\00:10:56.65 to get to know a very diverse community in a country 00:10:56.69\00:11:01.22 that maybe many of us don't know 00:11:01.26\00:11:02.92 but which I think has examples that they can show us. 00:11:02.96\00:11:08.86 So I look forward to going back and seeing them again. 00:11:08.90\00:11:14.24 When you look at recent history 00:11:14.27\00:11:15.84 there are not many examples of leaders 00:11:15.87\00:11:19.57 who put their ambitions aside and stepped aside. 00:11:19.61\00:11:25.98 I remember Nelson Mandela 00:11:26.01\00:11:28.38 who was actually been a revolutionary 00:11:28.42\00:11:30.45 in his pre-imprisonment days 00:11:30.49\00:11:32.92 but after serving only a short time stepped aside 00:11:32.95\00:11:36.59 for the good of his country. 00:11:36.62\00:11:38.29 Of course in the United States 00:11:38.33\00:11:39.69 that's still quite a memory of George Washington, 00:11:39.73\00:11:42.80 the father of the Nation, 00:11:42.83\00:11:45.17 saying farewell to the presidency 00:11:45.20\00:11:47.34 and going back to his farm. 00:11:47.37\00:11:49.60 These examples I think will give a little window 00:11:49.64\00:11:53.07 into the mind set of some one who is not a ruler to rule 00:11:53.11\00:11:56.44 but a leader to lead 00:11:56.48\00:11:58.55 because of an inner moral compass. 00:11:58.58\00:12:02.22 The Christian serving the state, the civil interest, 00:12:02.25\00:12:07.02 I think is a stronger ruler, a stronger steward 00:12:07.06\00:12:10.69 because of this moral compass 00:12:10.73\00:12:13.06 and I do believe that in our world, 00:12:13.09\00:12:15.06 we need more people who can walk away 00:12:15.10\00:12:18.27 if need be, if there's a moral conflict 00:12:18.30\00:12:20.90 within office can exemplify moral power. 00:12:20.94\00:12:26.31 For Liberty Insider this is Lincoln Steed. 00:12:26.34\00:12:30.15
